"Did anyone from Gallete see you with her, coming in?" Gougere seems concerned.
"Yeah. Axel." You reply, crossing your arms.

She's silent for a minute, and then snaps up to your vision.
"I'm afraid you may have to leave with her, tonight. For Bruschetta."
"No! Gougere don't scare her!" Aligot jumps, seemingly surprised that she would say that.

"What are we supposed to do? Kill Axel!?"
"No! No one is dying tonight!" Aligot grabs her hand.

Sorry Aligot, someone may have to die tonight if you don't start hearing the things you want.

You are Yuuki Kuchinashi, and so far there is no guarantee that you won't kill someone by the end of the night.
Earlier, you found out that a 'princess' of another kingdom may have been trapped in their own dungeon for reasons that no one can seem to provide any adequate answer to. This 'Gougere' person, who is Gallete's archmage, seemed overly emotional upon hearing of her rescue from Gallete's dungeon. She also didn't seem to give a very good explanation as to where she came from, or why she was inside their dungeon.

There was some sob story about having to take care of her and how the King can't keep it in his pants and blah, blah, blah. You don't care about that right now. You want some answers, and some way for her to live without being buried in a dungeon.

"I just don't think she's safe here! Not now!" Gougere seems insistent. "Please! Take her and flee!"

"Biscotti has some of the best security in the world." Aligot presses her. "There is no reason for anyone to be leaving tonight, furthermore the dark roads in the dead of night aren't safe, anyway."

"Then what do we do? Just leave her here in a castle swarming with Gallete generals?!"

"Yes! I'll leave her in Alicot's room, and no one will be the wiser. She can dress her up as a maid so no one is suspicious."

>Stop.
>I like the 'fleeing tonight' idea.
>I like the hiding idea.
>Both of these ideas are dumb.
>She's staying in my room tonight.
>Let's ask her.

You sigh, this has been one of the most annoying things to ever happen.
She's just a kid! Why would anyone seriously fear or be suspicious of a kid? It makes no sense, it's not like she's wearing head-to-toe armor while dragging a sword behind her.

"Does anybody even know who she is?" You ask, staring directly at Gougere.

"I don't know, that's what is so terrifying about it." Gougere kneads her coat in her hands. "I have no idea who is going to see her or recognize her. It could be a guard, could be a chef, or no one here might even know who she is."

"Do YOU know who she is, then? Why a king's illegitimate kid is the most valued secret in Gallete?"
After all, you were under the assumption that kings and emperors made bastard children left and right.

"No, I really don't. I didn't think it was a problem at the time, and I still don't now."
"Do you know if your king has any more children?"

"I'm pretty sure he doesn't. There hasn't been another mating season for quite a long time."

Quite a long time?

"What will it be, Yuuki? If you want to leave I'll have an escort of only the most trusted knights ready in a few minutes. They're on-call." Aligot leans against the table.

"First off, Gougere; you're free to go."
"Huh?"
"I'll deal with everything from here on. Just leave it to me."
"You WILL!?"

She wraps her arms around you once more.
"THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU, PLEASE JUST-"
"It's fine. I'll take care of her, just try to get some rest."

She bows several times before slinking out of the room. Aligot securely fastens the door behind her.
"I want to put her at the shrine with Jack." You sit in her seat. "He's good at defending girls, right?"

Aligot sighs. "I'll get Bennet and-"

"No no, we're not going tonight. You're right about the dark roads." You wave him off. "We'll go in the morning. Tonight she sleeps in my room."

Aligot nods as he shows you out of this secure room in Biscotti's library. You step outside to see a strange sight.

Gougere is grasping Kayda's shoulders. There are tears at the cusp of Gougere's eyes, and Kayda seems really annoyed.

"What? Louise was just complaining and I wanted to know what happened-"
"(Stop! Stop! I get it!)"

Her head snaps toward you. "(Yuuki! We got a big problem!)"
"No we don't..." Kayda pouts. "The grown-ups fixed everything in Gallete, right? What's the big deal?"

This just hasn't been a good trip for Yuuki has it? First she got stuck going through the same window twice, found a little girl trapped in a dungeon for her whole life, then the normally useful Jack is drunker than normal due to ANOTHER little girl being trapped in a dungeon.

You kneel down to Kayda's eye-height, and she suddenly seems nervous.
"Kayda, I need to know something and it's important. What was Louise complaining about, where was she complaining about it, and to how many people?"

Kayda seems confused by this line of questioning.
"Uh.. She was talking about how a bunch of people moved into her castle. Some brat in the basement, and a dragon."

A dragon? Isn't that what you went to defeat- OH RIGHT! You forgot to ask Gougere about the dragon-lady who was also imprisoned beneath Gallete.
She's with Akiko right now, but you can ask about that more in the morning.

"Let's walk."
"Okay?"

You stride down the hallway with Kayda. She's almost having to jog to keep up with your pace.

"She was being loud and went to Charlotte's room to complain. She made it sound like the trip went horribly, but everyone made it back safe, right? What is she complaining about?"
"Did anyone hear you two?"

"Just some people in the guest hallway, and I guess Charlotte."

That isn't good. You don't know who 'people in the hallway' refer to.
"Were they all maids?"
"Some were, what is this about?"

You got to get that kid out of the armory.
"C'mon Kayda. You're going to give me a hand!"

You knock on the armory door, and Fritelli opens up. You and Kayda slide inside the doorway.
Then you turn to Kayda.
"If Louise is still up there running around, I need you to go distract her. Go talk with her, and keep her from telling anyone else, got it? This is hero business now."

"Oh, okay." Kayda seems confused, rightfully so. "What do I talk about?"
"Anything except the trip we just took. Talk about getting clothes, or visting the town. Just don't talk about the trip, okay?"
"Fine, but if this is boring you owe me another trip into town."

She hops out of the doorway as Fritelli shuts it.

"What's the verdict?"

"I'm keeping her in my room tonight." You flop down on the bench. "Also, I hate Catland."

"I can see why after all this." Fritelli sits down next to you.
"Tonight has been just awful." You groan. "I didn't even get to ask about the dragon girl I found down there."

"Dragon.. girl?" Fritelli asks with curiosity.
"Right, I got so ahead of myself I forgot to mention her, too. There was a girl a little younger than I am down in Gallete's dungeon too. She was a dragon."

"A WHAT?"
"Dragon. She had the tail and everything. The big one was trying to get her out. Her story doesn't really add up, though."

"Dragon.." Fritelli says to herself. "I look into that while you deal with this. I know you have your hands full."
"Really? I'd really appreciate that!" You hug Fritelli tightly.

"Aww relax." She pats your head. "I'm just here to make your life easier."

She goes into the backroom and returns with the girl in tow. Esther seems to walk with a hesitant pace.

"C'mon, you're sleeping in my room tonight." You rub her scalp.
"But-" She sounds, a little scared? "Your room isn't mine. Shouldn't I sleep in my room?"

"No." You state, plainly. "Not tonight. Just stay with me tonight, and don't wander the hallways."
"Uh, okay?"

Fritelli wraps some kind of hood over Esther. Which only makes her look MORE suspicious, but no one can tell who she is anymore. She awkwardly follows behind you as you sneak out into the hallway.

You make a beeline straight for your room. The whole time grasping her hand with a death-grip and eying any and all passerbys you find in the hallway.

Fortunately, no one at this time of night except for Biscotti maids. You find the guest hallway without resistance. At the end, you can see Louise chatting at Kayda while Kayda looks like she wants to leave. Quickly, you hop into Annetta's bedroom.

"THERE YOU ARE!" A voice suddenly startles the young girl. "I have a few things to say to you Miss 'I'm just going to help Jack, I'll be back in a couple hours'!"

Tiny feet plod across the floor. Annetta, clad only in a towel, angry approaches. You can feel the girl reel back in your grasp.

Quickly you shut the door behind you.
"Well!?" Annetta huffs. "Are you going to explain what happened today!? Or maybe why you left your princess to worry about you while you went off to fight a DRAGON without TELLING HER!?"

Her expression softens and her long white ears sag when she notices the hooded girl who is trying to hide behind you.
"Who is that?"

"It's..." You suddenly lack the words to explain it.

She sighs, crossing her arms and adjusting her towel. "Yuuuukiii, were you off trying to adopt other people's children again? Who is it this time? You know that's really just kidnapping every time you do it, right?"

>It's not adopting!

You throw your arms up, and wrap them around the bunny princess.

"Aw Anna." She always feels so warm, and soft to hold!
"Yuuuki, You're not answering my question."

"Anna, I don' t want to talk about it now and I'm tired. It's been a long day." You let go of her slender figure. "Can we just go to bed and I'll explain it in the morning?"

"This is so like you." She huffs, weakly returning the hug. "Okay, I'll allow it this time. In the morning I expect you to tell me EVERYTHING. Okay? No leaving things out."
"I promise!" You let her go and stand up. "It's not adopting either! And I'm not kidnapping her!"

"Hmph." She walks over to the young girl. "So what is it? She looks kind of confused."
"It's.. complicated."

Esther slowly draws backwards as Annetta approaches.
"Hello sweetie, what's your name?" Anna puts her hand out.
"Esther." The girl doesn't return the handshake.

"Esther, huh?"
Before the girl can react, Annetta reaches over and hugs her.
"You can call me 'Anna'."

She squirms in Anna's grasp, before slowly melting into it.

"Now that's aside, why don't we go to bed? It's been a long day."
"Okay, I'll take the floor-"

"No, Esther. We're all sleeping in the bed. There's enough room." You pat her head.

Finally, some relief. Your shoes feel like iron weights after today. You take out a spare nightgown and help Esther change into it. Her clothes are filthy, and you wonder just how often she gets to shower as well.

Annetta helps Esther into bed as you duck out into the hallway momentarily. You signal to Kayda and give her the thumbs up. She sighs in relief as she quickly tries to wrap up her conversation with Louise.

You shut the door and untie yourself. Then you nearly throw off your kimono in frustration. It feels good to get out of your clothes. They were starting to feel like weights.
Without hesitating, you nearly faint into bed. You can barely make out Anna saying 'Good Night' before everything is dark.

Okay, this could be bad.
No, wait. It's probably fine. If it's enemies, whoever is attacking a castle full of heroes must be the dumbest people alive.

There isn't really any reason to panic.

Though, if they're attacking this room, there IS a reason to get Anna and Esther up.
You grab your kimono off the ground, and then start tying your Obi around your waist.

"Anna, Esther." You state, quietly and plainly.

"Hnng" Anna groggily sits up. "What's wrong, Yuuki?"

Thud thud THUD.

"Eek!"
"Shh!"

Thud thud thud.
There's some commotion in the hallway.

Thud.

"(Yuuki! What's that?)"
"(I don't know! Get Esther and hide! Do you have a good spot?)"
"(There's a cabinet with a fake wall behind it!)"
"(Quickly!)"

You pick up Esther. She barely responds to the stimulation of being carried as Anna slowly leads her into the other room.

You finish your hastily-tied knot and grab your naginata.
Quickly, you secure the window to make sure nothing can open it. If they're getting in, they have to break that window.

That's when you hear it.

There's a picking noise, in the door of your room.
You quietly peer through the lock just to see a tiny metal implement slip through. There's a light swear from the other side of the door.

>Slam the door open as hard as you can, it's time to party!

Wait.

You have a second thought. The door is your layer of protection right now. Opening it would be doing his work for him.
When you were young, your older sister would tell you of assassins who have feet which could stride across wind. They would jump on people's houses at night and lower poison-tipped threads into your mouth when you were sleeping. She did this to keep you up at night, and it worked really well, too.

This is different, though. This is actually happening. You hear a click in the door's lock, and you scramble to the darkness near the doorframe.

You raise your naginata to the ready, and the door hastily swings open.

Before you can even react, a small circular bomb is thrown in!
It explodes into a cloud of green gas! Gas which burns your eyes, really intensely!

Oh, god. You're crying. You can feel the tears streaming down your face as you struggle to keep your eyes focused on the doorway. You hear a whisper from the other side as two men enter the room.

Before they can even react, your blade pushes straight through them! With a puff of purifying smoke, they explode into animal balls.

There's a light whistle, and the sound of footsteps. You jump out into the hallway with your naginata at the ready. Just to be met with men, dressed in black, hastily running away from you! They stream from the rooms they were invading as they head for the end of the hall. The whole way they step over animal balls and naked guards.

>Pursue them!
>Damage is done, close the door and wait until the guards clear out the remainder.
>You need to defend your princess. Wait here at the doorway.

The burning in your eyes subsides, but the burning in your heart remains.

You want to kill every single one of them, and you feel like you must kill them right now.
"ARCTIC, BLADE." You shout, from a deep and dark part of your soul.

Blue rushes out in a bolt across the floor. Ice sticks to the carpets, the doorframes, even the lighting on the walls.

It slams into the retreating soldiers, some of them turning to animal balls, others seeming to shrug off the icy mantle they've just been coated with.
Either ways, now that you've adequately expressed your anger, something else edges at your mind.
"The children!" You shout to no one, "PROTECT THE CHILDREN!"

You hop behind the door and slam it shut. Then you throw another bolt of ice straight at the frame. It freezes into a brick.
You survey the room; nope, there's definitely no one in here.

That's comforting.

You pick up one of the animal balls and walk toward the back room. You tap your foot on the cabinet.
"Are you two okay?"

"(W-whats happening out there?!)"
"(I heard an explosion!)"

"It's fine, everything is fine now."

At least, until they show back up again.

You sit in front of the cabinet, keeping close guard to the children. The animal ball squeezes gently in your hand. It's almost therapeutic.

This animal is definitely a cat. It has pointed ears, and a long, lanky tail.
I hate Catland so much, and I will personally turn Charlotte into a catball if I even get a HINT that they were behind this.

You hear commotion in the hallway. Some gasps, and some yelling.
"Hey!" You hear a voice at the door, and some banging. "Yuuki! Are you all-right?"

>Don't answer.

"If this is a cat then I'M GONNA KICK YOUR ASS!" You yell at the iced doorway.

"What? No! It's Dorje!"

Oh! The white-haired kid!
Wait.

"There aren't any CATS out there, is there? You're not speaking at the end of a knife, are you?"
"No! I'm a little roughed up, but I'll be fine!"

That's not good enough.
"I HATE CATLAND SO MUCH!" You yell, "I'm going to PERSONALLY turn Charlotte into a catball."
"No! No, don't do that! Why do you think this is Gallete's fault?"

"Listen!" You yell at the door. "You weren't with me at all today, but all I've learned today is that CATLAND SUCKS! Everything about it is bad and everyone there could be rotten! The only person who I know isn't rotten is Louise, and she ain't a cat!"

"What's with the yelling?" You hear another voice.
"I'm just talking with Yuuki, she won't open the door and she's angry about cats."
"Cats?" The voice pauses for a minute. "Yuuki, it's Bennet. The cats are gone, the hallway is safe."

"So what? Want me to open the door?!"
"No, I want you to keep it shut. We have this under control."

"Well, good!" You're glad to hear that Biscotti's knights are at least a little competent.

"Wait in there and we'll scan the floor, okay?"
"Yeah! I'm gonna go check Louise's room because it looks like it's been ransacked." Dorje exclaims.

>Wait, Louise's room was ransacked?

Wait, something about this doesn't add up.
"LOUISE's room was ransacked?!"

"Yeah, there are linens and clothes dragged out into the hallway."

There's a deep feeling in the pit of your stomach.
"Is she okay!?"

"I don't know, let me check."

Dorje runs off, and Bennet seems to speak up.
"Listen, we'll take it from here. Louise is a hero, and she'll be fine. We'll call Jack if we need any more assistance. Have a nice night, Yuuki."

"Thanks. You too. Come get me if you want someone to exterminate any cats."

Bennet walks off.
You want to wait and hear Dorje's report on Louise. You don't want some OTHER little kid getting dragged into this.

There are some footsteps, and another knock at the door.
"Louse is okay!" Dorje says, yet again. "Some bad men were trying to carry her out, but we got her back!"

"B-bad men?" You say through the door, shakily.
"Yeah! Some guys in black. They must have really beat her down, too!"

"Y-yeah. Should I go talk to Louise?"
"Louise is fine, just a little angry. She's being mobbed by Charlotte right now."

"R-right. Thank you Dorje."
"No problem! Thank Pomelo when you see her. She caught the guy!"

Pomelo, you remember her from the trip. She was another one of Biscotti's knights.

You return to the other room and tap on the cabinet.
"All clear." You say, opening the cabinet door.
"Oh thank god." Anna emerges, Esther in tow. "I was SO WORRIED."
"It's fine, I'm not even sure it was targeted at us."

You try to think of the rationalization for why Charlotte's room was raided. This makes little sense to your perspective.
For a while, you thought Charlotte was BEHIND it all. Maybe keeping a more worthy heir away from the throne so she could take over.

Now? You're not so sure. It seems un-princess-y to order an attack on yourself.

You help Anna and Esther to bed, before laying down yourself. You don't even bother taking your clothes off.

Nothing today makes any sense.

"And that's why-!" Felice clasps her hands together, stars in her eyes. "Cody has been trying to run away!"

"Felice." Odelle pushes her friends hands off the table. "I'm pretty sure Cody is not seeing thirty different women."

"Come on! You heard what Jack said. Guys from his world are active ALL THE TIME! Think about how many JACK must be giving the-"

"Stop please." You take a drink from your rather small glass. "I don't want to think about these things on duty."

"You're not supposed to DRINK on-duty either, Pomelo." Bennet wearily raises his head from the table.

You are Pomelo Bellerose, incredible swordfighter! True protector of Biscotti! And all around blonde, handsome swordswoman.
All of those things are true! It's just no one recognizes you for your talents just yet.

But they will! Someday!

"Maybe you should try drinking someone that won't put you out in an hour; you're a lightweight drinker, Pomelo." Bennet sighs.
And HE'S one of those people. Pout.

"I can handle my own liquor!" You snap back at him.
Thud.
What was that sound?

"Remember strip poker last week?" Odelle smirks. "I didn't know it was possible to completely lose after four hands."
"Shut up, that was just bad luck."
"It was because you were drunk off your tail after a half a glass of beer."

THUD THUD.
Okay, you know you heard something that time.

"Noel isn't on duty today, Pomelo. She can't cover for you if you pass out."
"Okay, did you hear that?" You turn in your chair. Eying the top of the castle spire.

"See? You're doing it already." Bennet leans back. "Hearing things, and you've had only what. Two sips from that glass?"
"No, I'm pretty sure I heard something."

"You're just drunk."

"Hey, do you have carpenters on the roof?" Felice is squinting, staring at the spire. "At this time of night?"
"No, that's dumb-"

There's a horn, in the distance. It's one of the sentries' warning sirens.

The table flips over as Felice and Odelle bound from it. You, yourself try to consider the adequate trajectory you would need to get to the top of that castle in time.

You can jump from the fortifications, to the wall, and then up to the roof.
Guards and soldiers start scrambling, and like ants they descend from the guard houses and the barracks.

Unfortunately, being the daring hero that you are. You have no time to think about them!

With a leap, you make a hop from the ground all the way to the top of the barracks. You continue with your momentum, and you scurry up to the wall. Then up to the spire. Finally, you step off onto the roof.

If you were Jack, you could have done that in a single bound. Unfortunately, you are not Jack.

There's a faint whistle in the distance; followed by a crash.

You see... people, in the moonlight.
That's not as troubling as what you hear echoing behind them.

"LOUISE! NO!"
You're certain that was Charlotte's voice.

There, a silhouette in the moonlight, there's a figure carrying someone. It's not moving, or struggling in his grasp.

The other shadows proceed to leap at the edge of the roof. This one continues to carry his prisoner to the same jump-off point.

That's when you hop in front of him, sword drawn.
"VILLAIN!" You shout, firm grip around your broadsword. "UNHAND THE LASS AT ONCE!"

There's no doubt about it now, the damsel this scum is carrying is no other than Louise! Gallete's hero!
She looks unconscious, and very naked. The man has her slung over his shoulder.

He reaches into his belt, immediately you grab your sword at its center and sway to the left! A bolt of some kind cracks past your ear as the man attempts to charge straight at you!

>Cont.

You don't want to admit it right now, as it would be completely un-hero-ly to do so.

But you're scared right now. You can tell he's been doing this a lot longer than you've been using a sword.
Maybe charging straight at you wouldn't be the best of ideas if you were doing it. His form is almost perfect.

Holding a firm grip on the hilt and blade of your sword, you move it upwards into a block. An unseen blade held in his hand clatters and scrapes against yours!

He pushes against your guard. Even with one of his hands taken up by Louise; his strength is still strong enough to almost overpower your guard!

It doesn't help that the man stands almost two heads higher than you!

Maybe this was a mistake!

No, you can't let him have Louise. You have to fight back! Find some way to fight against his guard.

Without missing a beat, he lets go of his blade, letting you rock forward as he reaches into his belt once more. He draws a dagger and aims it as you as you nearly fall into his chest!
You're in trouble, and it doesn't help that his form is almost impeccable! Edna never trained you for this!

There is only one thing this incredible assailant has seem to have overlooked!

Using your forward momentum to your advantage, you extend your right knee and focus the hilt of your sword forward, into his chest.

Your knee strikes true. The metallic kneepad seems to strike a soft patch of flesh on his person.
Right in his crotch.

You can practically feel the crunch beneath all that metal between it and your skin.

Immediately, the man drops Louise with a thud and falls to one knee.
The contents of his stomach empty onto the roof, and he poofs into a small orb of fuzz and digested food.

"Louise!" You bend down and scoop up the wounded hero. "Say something!"
"Uhgrhgh." She grasps around your neck.

You sigh in relief. At least she's okay.

You carry Louise toward the opened hole in the roof. You're just in time to see that white-haired boy poke his head out of the hole.

"Oh good! You got her!" He sighs, "Thank you so much.. erm."
"Pomelo." You say, flatly. "Please remember my name. Your mother-in-law is training me, after all."

"She's NOT my mother-in-law." Dorje pouts. "Get Louise back to Charlotte. She's a wreck right now. Her knights are having to hold her so she doesn't go running off."

You sigh, dropping through the roof. Louise squirms in your grasp, and then asks to be put down.
Her feet touch the ground just in time for a white blur to emerge from Charlotte's room and completely envelop the naked girl in a hug.
"LOUISE!" She screams, squeezing her so tight that Louise seems to squeak. "I WAS SO SCARED!"
"L-Let go, you're embarrassing me." Louise whispers.

You can only smile. The two Gallete knights poke their heads out from her room and sigh in relief.

You walk down the hallway and leave the hero with her princess. There's a presence which you quickly recognize.

"Holy shit, Pomelo." Bennet catches up, with his axe in hand. "I saw that, did Edna teach you to do that?"

"What? Knee someone in the balls?"

"That's what you did? It happened so quick I didn't even notice. You looked like a monster in that fight!"
"I didn't feel like one. I dodged a knife and was almost overpowered. How is that 'a monster', Bennet?"
"You don't even know? You dodged like, five knives. They hit someone behind you, who rolled off the roof. Then you blocked someone who moved faster than I could even see. I think you just kicked the ass of their boss!"

"Wha-" You turn around, the clean-up crew is gathering fuzzballs. He's among them. "What makes you think that?"
"Well for one, he had a magic sword."

"A WHAT?"
"Yeah, Magic sword. And you blocked it! Edna's gonna be proud. You should send her a letter!"

Your mouth is agape. Somehow, you've accidentally become a hero.
