Become The Vampire 30

You spend the next hour goofing off with Meliora, Andrea and Athena, playing video games and having tickle fights. Sammy sits on the sidelines with Jennifer, and occasionally you catch them whispering things back and forth to each other. It doesn't bug you too much, since it seems like Sammy is calming down, but you note it anyway. As you wrap up the second part of your tournament Sammy and Jennifer move closer and sit with you, and the tournament quickly turns into a six-way, all out brawl.

You manage to emerge victorious, but your victory is cut short when Athena begins to cry. She sniffles and sulks, hiding under a blanket, and when you go to comfort her she shies away from you. Jennifer gently pushes you aside and slips under the blanket with Athena, and you sit back a bit, listening.

“Are you mad that your daddy beat you at the game?”

“Yes...”

“Aww. Well, I'm sure he didn't do it to be mean. I bet you really wanted to win though, didn't you.”

“Uh-huh...”

“Well, if you come back out and play again, maybe we can beat him together. What do you think? Should we team up? It'll be you and me against your daddy, and then everyone else can pick teams too.”

“Okay...”

Jennifer emerges from under the blanket with Athena, who gives you a determined smile, wiping her eyes. Jennifer crosses her arms in front of her chest.

“We challenge you, Oliver. We're going to take you down.”

Athena grins.

“Yeah!”

Athena points her finger at you, before grabbing her controller. Jennifer giggles and picks up hers, sitting beside Athena.

>Rules
Same system as Become The Dragon Quest. If you don't know what that is, it's best of three d20 rolls. I name a stat that sums up what you're trying to do, and if I don't name a relevant skill, you try to fill in the blank based on what you're trying to accomplish. “Break open the door” might be Strength based, but if you've been playing baseball after school and there's a lead pipe nearby, you could apply your Baseball skill to the roll. A 20 on the die is a crit threat, and if either of the other two rolls is 20 or higher after mods, it's a critical. A crit fail is when you have two or more 1s. So far this system has worked out well enough. We'll get into combat rules as needed, but in basic terms you have wounds, not HP, and the worse the wounds, the more penalties you accrue while doing other things.

Most Important Rule:
Have fun.

Yes, but your suggesting the Jennifer route of parenting, which is too strict. We need a balance. She needs to be daddy's princess, and also stronger & tougher than daddy ever was.

You send Meliora over to their team and try to fight alongside Sammy and Andrea. It turns out that you don't need to pretend to throw the match at all, and that fighting against Meliora and Jennifer at the same time was the worst possible plan. You try not to completely lose your cool and manage to succeed, taking your defeat with grace and style. Athena does a victory lap around the room and hugs Jennifer before tackling Meliora, who just lays there looking at you as if unsure what to do. She slowly hugs back, and Athena snuggles against her. Andrea stands up smiles.

“Well, that was fun, but we should head out. There wasn't a track practice because we were late getting here, but a few people want to go for a run in a bit.”

Sammy nods slightly and reaches into her pocket, and a moment later your phone buzzes. She gets up and follows Andrea to the door. You discretely check your phone while everyone else exchanges idle chatter, reading what Sammy sent you.

“Can we talk? During or after the run is fine.”

You look at Athena and Meliora and smile softly, getting to your feet.

“I'm part of the track team, so I should probably come with you guys, right? I'll join you guys in a little bit.”

Andrea nods and salutes, smirking and ducking out of the room, and Sammy smiles softly as she walks out. Jennifer moves next to Meliora.

“So you'll be out tonight as well then? I suppose the pair of us will be taking care of Athena in your absence?”

You nod and hang your head.

“Sorry. Spinning plates, you know how it is.”

Jennifer pats Athena on the head gently.

“I do indeed. Enjoy your run, you could probably do with some physical activity of some sort. You certainly didn't get much earlier.”

She chuckles softly, and Meliora gives her a confused stare for a few moments.

“I don't really want to know, but at the same time...”

Athena giggles softly and pokes the corners of Meliora's mouth, pushing them into a smile. Jennifer stands up.

“Stay safe, and be wary. We'll hold down the fort for you.”

I take it you weren't part of the thread that swore we'd be a better father than our father was.

Don't be irresponsible, it's not how we've been playing oliver.
>>
You nod and walk over to Athena, giving her a hug. She turns and hugs back, clinging to you as you try to stand up and smiling.

“Daddy's coming back soon, right?”

You nod and pat her gently, and she slowly releases her hold, beaming at you before going back over to Meliora and poking her nose. Jennifer hugs you from behind.

“See you soon.”

She releases you, and you head off to the lockers to get changed. You find it a little odd that you've adjusted so rapidly to this, but then again you're not entirely sure you've adjusted properly to everything else that's happened. For all you know you're full of inner turmoil waiting to burst to the surface and ruin everything. You really hope that doesn't happen.

When you get out to the track there's a much smaller group. It's you, Sammy, Andrea and a handful of other people. The course is set for another outdoor run, and after warming up Sammy leads the charge into the forest. The group thins out a lot more this time, and Andrea sticks with the other students, who seem to be giving you and Sammy some space. You're not sure whose idea it was, but it seems like everyone else is trying to nudge you into chatting with Sammy.

I dunno, she's got a photocopy of our soul. I doubt if it feels too odd at all. It might seem odd from the outside, though.
>>
You focus on the running, keeping your mind clear, and try to run off your stress. You're pent up from the last few days without any kind of release, you're emotionally conflicted because of the reasons you're pent up, and now you're trying to assume the role of father figure for a golem just because you can. By the time you finish running you're drained but strangely satisfied, like some part of you snapped back into place. The run didn't fix anything, but you feel like it helped you sort some things out.

As you walk around the track to ease your heart back into a normal rhythm Sammy moves to your side, walking with you and staying close. She doesn't say anything, and neither do you. It's not that you don't want to talk to her, but you're not really sure what to say. Finally, as though it's taking her a lot of effort, Sammy starts to speak.

“I'm... I'm sorry. About what I said, and what I... tried to demand you to do. I know you better than that, I just... It's still pretty close to the full moon, and I'm a little on edge. I don't want things to be over, but I just... I need to know what's going on with us. Are we... still a thing?”

You shrug a bit.

“I can't give a definite yes to that one. Yesterday was pretty rough, and I thought maybe you were done with me. I'm not saying that it's a no, but I can't just say yes without considering what was said and the intent behind it.”

Sammy nods slightly.

“I... I get that. I said a lot of things I didn't really mean because I was jealous and worried. Guys have always been more interested in her than in me at home. Maybe it's because she's the mate of the alpha or because I'm a runt, but... It hits a certain nerve, especially since you claimed me. So what are we going to do? I don't want to just give up.”

Sammy nods slightly.

“I guess... we just do what comes naturally and hope that it doesn't ruin everything?”

You nod slightly.

“That sounds like what's bound to happen anyway. But hopefully there's a little more forethought involved to minimize headaches and heartache.”

Sammy smiles softly.

“Well... Alright... That's better than what I was expecting... I thought you were just going to tell me no.”

You shake your head and slow to a stop.

“I couldn't just do that. We're in too deep at this point for it to be that easy. Besides, I don't want to hurt you. I'll make sense of it somehow.”

Sammy hugs you tightly before turning and walking off towards the locker room.

“I know you will.”

She jogs off, and you take a moment to look. You hate to see her leave, but watching her go is... You turn and make a beeline for the boy's locker room before that train of thought goes much further and your lovely relaxed frame of mind goes up in smoke.

You shower, change and head back to your room, head full of thoughts on what you're going to do tonight. Stories for Athena, a nice snuggle pile on your bed, and a peaceful night of rest where you can talk to Angie about all your questions. What you weren't anticipating was coming back to find Fenright in the hallway outside your room with two droids, Athena hugging his leg and Meliora shouting at him.

“You can't just take her, Oliver is going to have a fit.”

Fenright sighs.

“We've lost two people already because the patrols were missing a unit, and I don't have any more spares. At the very least I need her trained and armed so that people can be protected, unless you want full-time guard duty again. Either way, her core is still mine, and whether he tampered with her or not is irrelevant. The school needs protecting.”

Meliora looks your way.

>>
>>44781781
>Wasn't Mel half-melted and missing an arm like two hours ago?
Yeah and she ahs to get a spare body, there likely aren't that many combat capable frames for replacement given they're fighting supernatural shit constantly.

As for Crit doing something bad? Taking their core out is the fastest way to take them down. Oliver instead of being rational and talking, charged into RIP N TEAR mode from onset.

>>44781801
Only if it was hyper charged like Athena's was.
>>
>>44781829
>there likely aren't that many combat capable frames for replacement given they're fighting supernatural shit constantly.
That actually sounds like a very good reason for them to have a large number of redundant combat frames.

>Taking their core out is the fastest way to take them down.
Or kill us all, since that might still be a pretty big explosion, just not tac-nuke levels.
>>

>>
>>44781827

Implying they care, we snubbed their authority, ruined their shit, and got a bunch of humans killed which they can't cover up. This is a private school, if we fuck up enough, we're out, and we have no recourse.

As for where he got the cores from? They knew he got them from her, her sins are irrelevant on the joint school security to keep thing from not cocking up.

>>44781859
>That actually sounds like a very good reason for them to have a large number of redundant combat frames.

Except at any given time most of the frames will be trashed and take time to repair, possibly lots of it.
>>
>>44781902
If they're keeping a sane number of redundant frames, two isn't going to break the bank. If they aren't, this would've happened anyway.
>>
You look at Fenright for a moment, then at Athena.

“I'm not letting you take her. I'm the one responsible for the way she is, and I have a duty to take care of her. And what if she can't protect herself like this? What if you force her into this and it just ends up with her suffering?”

You put on your suit and helmet, and the droids both drop into fighting stances.

“I'll fight if I need to, but I'm not going to stand here and let her go just like that.”

Fenright hangs his head.

“Either she comes with me or people are going to get killed. I'm going to do my job, as her creator and a member of faculty at this school. Take him out, but don't kill him.”

The droids both nod and charge at you. You take a deep breath and rush at them. You've had a chance to have a real fight, and despite their flawless coordination you manage to avoid getting your shit kicked in during their first few charges, winding up with a few minor bruises. When they change their tactics from hit-and-run to a proper fist fight you turn the tables on them, throwing them around like ragdolls and damaging the plating on their limbs.

It's only when one of them starts to spark and twitch when you punch her chest that you notice Athena's expression. She's utterly horrified by the sight of you and her sisters fighting, and she's crying as she watches you. You focus on defending yourself instead of hurting them further while you try to come up with a plan, but the moment you do it just makes things worse, and she begins to sob.

“Stop fighting!”
>>
>>44781859
>Or kill us all,
Well, it won't kill US. And Athena will probably be fine too.

>>44781902
>her sins are irrelevant on the joint school security
Not true, we have no information about that. You're just making assumptions, and we know at least PART of the school faculty opposed her methods.

I know you're just trying to be paranoid and bring up the worst case scenerios, but it's too late to cry now. The dice have been rolled.
>>
The droids continue their assault on you and you focus all your effort on keeping them from landing another hit on you, trying to disengage. When one of them lands a lucky hit on you, Athena's chest begins to glow bright blue, and after a moment so do her eyes.

“I said... stop... fighting!

She vanishes, and an instant later one of the droid's heads flies off. There's a blue flash and the one behind you falls to the ground. As you turn around, helmet disengaging, you see Athena. She looks a little older than you are, her suit ripped in places but quickly repairing itself to fit her new body. She's panting, wobbling slightly and falling to her knees.

“No more... fighting...”

She slumps forwards and stops glowing, and Fenright runs over.

“No... No! No no no! Please, don't burn out on me, don't you die!”

He skids to a halt next to Athena, clutching at his face and trembling.

“Come on, think, Steven, think! There has to be a way...”

You sit down, trying to figure out what to do. You did what you thought was right, and you were doing so well, but it turned out all wrong. You could have won and taken Athena by force, but now... And now her core might go out again. You take off your suit and move closer to her.

You rub your hands together.

“Tend to the others, I'll help Athena.”

Fenright just stands there, as though the droids will be fine on their own, and you rest your hands on Athena's back, trying to get her magic going again. You try to push a little magic into her, but you're swiftly reminded by a sudden aching sensation that you're running dry. You're just about to risk burning yourself out in the vague hope that it will be enough when you remember a fragment of knowledge from your dad's notebook.

“Frankenstein wasn't just a book.”

You turn to Fenright.

“We need lightning.”

Fenright looks at you for a moment like you're insane before he suddenly grins.

“Yes. Yes! Oliver, you're brilliant! Quick, get her legs, we need to hurry to my lab! Meliora, grab your sisters!”

You nod and take her ankles while Fenright grabs her shoulders, and you cart her off in the direction of the science wing, with Meliora following behind you hauling the droids and their parts. Fenright kicks open one of the supply closets and knocks over a bottle of floor wax, pressing a big red button hidden behind it. The back wall opens up, revealing a rather old-fashioned lab full of wooden furniture, flickering lights and strange bottles of liquids that bubble, hiss and change colors. Fenright helps you set Athena down on a work table.

“Oliver, I'm going to simulate a bolt of lightning and hit her with it, right in her core. She's designed to take much worse, I assure you, but I need you to do what you can to help her remain stable. We don't have time to analyze this before her core gives out completely.”

You nod and stand beside Athena as Fenright assembles what, from what you can tell, will be a lightning cannon of some sort. Athena is rapidly turning pale, and you brace yourself.

You take a deep breath, place your hands on Athena's shoulders, and brace for impact. You shut your eyes tightly and wait, and at the sound of the air around you exploding and the sensation of your hands feeling like they're about to catch fire you grit your teeth and focus. You redirect every burst of magical energy that pours out of Athena's core, drawing it into yourself and bouncing it right back. Every weak spot is reinforced, and when her core is venting normally again you ride it out, letting yourself recharge just a little bit from the excess and giving it one last check before opening your eyes.

“Oh.”

Your hands are blackened and numb, and you can't quite move your fingers. You try to force blood into them to move them, or even get them to twitch, but they won't budge. A side effect of touching something being struck by lightning, no doubt. Fenright runs over with a jar of something and smears it onto your hands, and you howl in pain as it soaks into your skin, slowly returning it to normal, and as you flex your fingers the pain subsides. Fenright caps the jar and slaps you.

“You're an imbecile. Clever in a pinch, but what were you expecting? At her heart, Athena lives to protect people. She wants to save lives. Were you really going to demand that she give up the thing that makes her who she is? You're a worse father than I am, and that's saying something.”

Meliora sighs.

“It's kinda true. It really is saying something.”

Fenright hangs his head.

So when Athena wakes up, neither of us get to decide who she is at her core. She does. I'm not going to let you just snatch her away for your own purposes. If she wants to protect people, then... then I'll figure it out from there. But I'm going to protect my family. Alright?”

Fenright claps slowly.

“Well put. Now we just need her to wake up. Fortunately, it won't take too long. Unfortunately, you're standing in my lab, using my technology, and trying to get in the way of my job. I'm going to ask you once, just once, to leave. When she wakes up, I'll have Meliora escort you here, and Meliora can stick around to help me repair her sisters and keep an eye on Athena. You're being emotional and unbalanced, and the last thing I need is for her to wake up and give up on who she really is as a person just because you won't stop crying about her.”

>Fine then. I'll leave. For now. But I'm coming back in a little while to double check.

You shake your head.

“I'm staying right here, as long as it takes. I'm not going to let you manipulate her or anything else. If you're going to stay here with her, so am I.”

Fenright sighs softly.

“Oliver? I like you. You're a decent student, you're friends with Meliora, and you're smart sometimes. But you're also an emotional mess. You're a kid trying to play at being a father when you're not ready. You're like a younger version of me, except you bumbled into being a dad instead of slowly figuring it out one step at a time as you worked your way towards it. And so, it's with a heavy heart that I have to do this.”

He points at the door.

“Get out of my lab. Last warning. If you continue being impudent then I'm going to have to remove you myself. We both know that the moment she wakes up you're going to try to persuade her to stay with you. Meliora will keep me honest about this. If I do anything out of line, you'll know. So leave, before you force me to get you out of here.”

Fenright sighs and waves his hand dismissively.

“Fine then. Do what you like.”

He heads over to another worktable and stands on repairing one of the droids, taking his time with it, and Meliora works on the other. You head for the doorway and stand there for a few moments. There's a soft beeping down, and the door suddenly slams shut in your face, knocking you back a few steps. The button on the wall has dimmed, and your nose is sore. You sit there for a moment staring at the door.

“That son of a...”

The door opens back up and Fenright looks at you warily.

“Automated door lock. Sorry about that. It kinda slipped my mind when you went off on me.”

He turns around and heads back over to the droid, and you sit there on the floor trying to figure out what to do next.

You sit down on the floor and assess yourself. Your magic reserves didn't fill up, but you're not about to burn yourself out. You spend your time working on your control over your magic, trying to get a better handle on it. It's still a fairly vague process, but you're slowly pinning it down one step at a time. The tricky part, by and large, is mastering the subtle visualizations associated with it until you can just exert your will directly. Each brand of magic has a unique flow, as you've experienced with elemental magic, blood magic and now rune magic, and even controlling raw magical energy has components unique to it.

You're disturbed from your meditations be the sound of Athena gasping and sitting up. Her body immediately falls apart into a mess of blood, tissue and dissolving bones, her core hovering in the air as little flecks of blood hover around her, slowly growing into a new body. She's younger than you are again, and she sits on the edge of the table as Fenright runs over to her. You charge in, meeting him beside her, both of you hugging her tightly. Athena yelps a bit and you both release her, and after a few moments the parts of her that you squished return to normal. Athena pouts.

“Bad daddy... hurt my sisters...”

She turns to Fenright.

“And you... hurt other daddy... I saw it...”

She frowns at you both.

“Get along. Now.”

“Athena, you can't just order people to get along, it doesn't work like that.”

You turn to Fenright and take a moment to gather your thoughts.

“You're the one in charge of people keeping people safe around here. I respect that. But I don't respect that you tried to take Athena without even talking to me. I'm willing to work this out though.”

Fenright looks surprised and a little hurt.

“Pardon? You swiped a golem core from me, opened a security breach and painted a target on the back of one of my daughters by turning her into a homunculus. Not to mention you've only known her for a few hours. You should be apologizing to me for-”

Athena clears her throat, and Fenright rolls his eyes.

“Fine. We'll figure this out as a team. Now then... Athena, without either of us giving you any input, what do you want to do? Perform the task you were designed and built for, or live the life your new daddy wants to provide you with?”

Athena huffs.

“Both. I want to fight for people, and be with my family, every single person.”

Fenright glances at her, then back to you.

“I'm fine with that. It means people won't die. What about you?”

You nod.

“I don't want to see you getting hurt, Athena. I want to be part of your training, or at least see it. If you're going to do this, it's going to be done right.”

Athena blinks, then smiles.

“Daddy, you're silly.”

Fenright smirks at you.

“Athena? Show him what you can do. First, stabilize your core. Protocol three-three-five. You went a little overboard, so you'll need to reconfigure your buffer if you plan on fighting like that again. Oh, and protocol nine-two-eight.”

Athena's eyes glow and you can fear a faint sizzling noise, followed by the scent of burning meat. Her body turns black and starts to smoke before bursting into flames, and moments later her body reforms. There's no sizzling sound, and she's giggling.

“Tickles...”

Fenright nods, walking over to a computer and typing away.

“Now engage Meliora. Limit set to seven for both of you.”

Meliora hangs her head.

“Seven? Really? Why can't we just leave it at two?”

Fenright looks at you.

“Someone wants to know his daughter will be alright.”

Meliora's eyes glow bright pink, and Athena's turn bright blue. You're about to open your mouth to speak when they both vanish, and the room is filled with the sounds of a fight you can't quite see. They're both moving way too fast for you to keep track of properly, moving around the room and bouncing off the walls as they spar. Fenright smirks at you.

“Athena might actually be stronger than Meliora by a few notches with this body. Metal doesn't harden the same way that flesh does when exposed to certain spells. Athena will be fine.”

Fenright is all about logic and rationalization. In his eyes, you're the one who kidnapped HIS daughter and then made her vulnerable to angelic attacks and a whole slew of other problems. To him, you're the one being difficult and causing problems when he already knows the answers to the situation.
>>
>>44784649

We'll just have to do the cute kiddy stuff with her when she's not patrolling, kill all the dickass monsters first and comfort her when she was nightmares, and if she winds up wanting out, obviously she can get out, even if we have to do something mean to allow it.

The problem with geniuses is, they always have an answer.
Problem is, it's not always the right one, especially when it comes to emotions. The man's inspiration for a daughter's healthy mindset was a bipolar Japanese cartoon cliche.
Fenright's a shitty dad, but a brilliant scientist.
We're, by din't of having no Smarts bonus, not a genius, but we're desperate to be a better dad than our's was and to lend some stability to her unstable life.
>>
You lean forward and pat her on the head, kissing her forehead.

“Be safe, don't be out too late, and do what you feel you need to. I'd be lying if I said that I've never taken any risks, but keep them small, alright? Small and manageable. And listen to your sister.”

You look to Meliora, who is slowly getting to her feet.

“Mel, you're in charge. And if she does anything adorable, add it to the album.”

Meliora gives you a shaky thumbs up and hobbles her way over to the droids to continue the repairs. You give Fenright a look, and he just nods. He knows what you're going to say, and you know he knows. That's all that's necessary. You give Athena a hug and back away slowly, giving her one last lingering look before turning around and walking away. You take a deep breath as the door slides closed.

His answer is to just let her do what she wants to do, because he assumes that her core programming is still a key component of her personality. You head back to your room and find Jennifer tidying up a bit, back to wearing just her bathrobe again. She frowns when she notices your expression and walks over.

“Tell me what you need.”

You head for the couch.

“I need to talk. Serious talk. Athena is strong enough to handle herself in a fight, which is great, but Fenright wants to get her back on monster patrol, and I'm freaking out.”

Jennifer sits down next to you and nods.

“I understand that you're worried, but you also have to consider that you've only known her for a few hours. You don't know what she's really capable of. She might end up being the one protecting you, have you considered that? I know I shouldn't really be one to be giving parenting advice here, but you're taking the exact opposite stance that I did. If you smother her, you'll deny her who she is. Part of being a parent is trusting that the person they're turning into is someone who can stand on their own.”

You nod slightly. Part of you, the bitter, hurting part of you, wants to go to town on her for how she raised Sammy, but it won't help. You close your eyes.

“I'm gonna work on my magic for a bit. You're welcome to join me if you like.”

Jennifer puts her hand on your shoulder.

“Gladly.”

You sit down with Jennifer and go over the blood magic tome again, with Jennifer translating and providing you with information as you play around with your telekinesis spell. Mostly you're just getting the hang of it and trying to fine tune it a bit more, but without recasting the spell you can't make it more precise. Lacking a more advanced version to toy around with at the moment, you turn your attention to finding more kinds of spells to make use of. Loyalty, reinforcing allies and the like all seem like valid paths, and Jennifer starts transcribing bits and pieces of a couple of spells for you.

The first spell makes you think of the dryad. It's a spell that lets you sacrifice your own magical energy to empower someone else, or that lets someone else make a one-time sacrifice to bolster you. The spell drains you the same amount either way, but you can control how much gets transferred so long as the target is willing to give up the designated amount. Once you build up your reserves some more it could be a very handy tool, especially for natural magic like werewolf healing.

The second spell is one that requires the target to give up their free will to you, of their own volition. In return you can command them, even if they attempt to betray you at a later date. The power of the spell's ability to compel them is tied to how willing they are to commit the act in question, and forcing them to do things that they don't want to do will eventually weaken and end the spell. It warns of dire consequences if the spell is broken in this way.
>>
>>44785281
This isn't "pushing limits" it's literally "pick the most stupid option imaginable with the least chance of success that won't be useful even if it's successful because we don't have the runes to make a stable version of the suggested power or perform the power in the first place and that's how rune magic works."

This is the first time I've even been pessimistic about an option tonight.
>>
The third spell is, you assume, taken from Dracula's contributions in the field of blood magic, the “bloody familiar” spell. It binds another living creature to you, turning them into blood and allowing them to reside within you. It can only be used on a single target at a time, and has the same requirement as the compulsion spell, so it can only be used on an utterly devoted individual. You don't see much point to the spell beyond sneaking a buddy around until Jennifer gets to the second portion, which is that a familiar and master are linked, sharing magical energy, as well as physical might when joined.

>Practice with the energy transfer spell

We're pushing our limits NOW. Rune Magic is notoriously dangerous, and it was a minor miracle we didn't blow up with Athena's core. Taking stupid overly complicated risks for some nebulous benefit in the unlikely event we succeed is foolhardy.

You take the book from Jennifer and work with her for a bit, practicing the spell. With the book guiding you it's easy, but you try to replicate it without the book and the attempt is less than perfect. It makes you wonder at the fundamental principles of blood magic, and why the runes and chants are what they are. Still, you manage to pass energy back and forth with Jennifer for a little while, though by the end of it she seems worn out. She's no mage, that's for sure, and her reserve is even smaller than your own.

“Rest a bit, alright? I'm gonna keep working on this on my own.”

Jennifer nods and heads for your bed, stripping off her robe as she climbs under the sheets. Once again she's sleeping naked in your bed. You're not really sure how to react to this situation. She did say that being naked doesn't really affect her at all, but she knows how it affects you. Maybe she's just too tired to realize it?

You push those thoughts from your mind and focus on the spell, this time trying to send the energy back to Jennifer, at least in part. Just a little trickle of it, enough to know you can control the flow properly. You cast the spell and focus on returning a small quantity of Jennifer's energy to her, but you feel something slip and you end up dumping energy into the spell instead. You almost hit burnout and manage to keep from exhausting yourself, but you can feel yourself grow a little tired as the spell finishes.

You sigh softly and look at the clock. If you don't sleep now you'll be late for class, but you also want to be awake when Athena gets in. You resolve instead to sleep on the couch, right in her line of sight the moment she walks in the door. You text Meliora to let her know to wake you up and make yourself comfortable. It's kinda funny, it's your room but you keep giving up your bed to Jennifer night after night. You glance over at her. She's looking at you silently.

“You alright?”

Jennifer nods.

“I am. Just thinking.”

She turns away from you again and you sigh softly, closing your eyes, trying to relax and rest. You attempt to remain alert though, in case Athena comes home.

You awaken to the sound of your phone alarm going off. It's morning, and you slept clean through the night without a visit from Angie. Maybe she was busy with her brother or something. You sigh softly and adjust your position on the bed, but it's strange and a little mushy. You poke at it and stop short. This is a dream. You're dreaming lucidly on your own.

You take some time trying to sift through your mind for more runes. The spells you used before were formed from pure will, sculpted using whatever felt natural, making up the rules of magic as you went. The results weren't perfect, not by a long shot, and Fenright manually corrected a few things in Athena's core to compensate for whatever your second spell did to her.

You piece together a few runes based on what Jennifer told you, ideas about energy and how it moves. You find the rune that designates a location, but not the ones that define where it is in space, as well as the rune for quantity, but nothing to tell what the units it's measured in. When you come up empty for anything else you imagine Angie, who appears from under your sheets with a yawn. She looks around briefly and smirks at you.

“Not bad. Managed to figure it out then?”

You shake your head.

“I think I lucked out on this one. But a lucid dream is a lucid dream.”

I will protect her with our soul.
>>
“Let's start with Zeke. Tell me a little more about him?”

Angie nods and sits on the couch beside you.

“Everyone has family, and you love some of them, and you... tolerate others. Well, my brother Zeke is my twin. Two sides of the same coin. When it comes to things that go against the natural order, I take care of the humans and he takes care of the rest. Except I'm part of this deal down here, and he was excluded from it, on purpose. He's overzealous. I'm always tired, and he's always on his highest setting.”

You nod a little.

“So basically... he's the opposite of you? Some kind of divine reaper of unnatural souls?”

Angie smirks.

“Kinda, yeah. I think he takes delight in destroying what he considers pale imitations of proper souls.”

You look down.

“I see... Alright then. And what about that shield that protected me from your scythe?”

Angie shrugs a bit.

“We're still working on that, though it might relate to that invitation you got. Long ago Dracula managed to enthrall a reaper, and made him into the perfect necromancer. It was that reaper that helped him become the first vampire, the culmination of their combined efforts with necromancy and blood magic.”

You shudder a bit at the implication. A reaper who culls and raises the dead, sending souls to hell or heaven and then dragging them back as he sees fit.

“So is that reaper keeping Dracula alive or something?”

Angie shakes her head.

“Worse than that. He made Dracula impossible to reap. His soul was made into a physical substance, and then fused permanently with his physical form. That's why vampires turn to dust, their bodies are held together by their souls and the souls of their victims. But Dracula's body is made from his blood, and as long as even a drop remains, so does his soul and his will.”

You lean back on the couch and make it recline for you, looking up at the ceiling.

“I want to protect Athena from Zeke. How do I go about doing that? If I make her my familiar, would that save her?”

Angie shakes her head.

“She's only being protected by the pact that covers the town. The moment she steps outside of it, she isn't safe. If she goes anywhere else, she'll be hunted. There's nothing you can do, aside from finding a way to do the impossible. You'd need to grant her a mortal soul somehow, but the only way to create one is getting down and dirty. You'd literally be making a life, then stealing its soul to make Athena truly alive. You'd be damned to the deepest pits of hell for all time for that.”

You nod slightly.

“...something to consider. Mind helping me with the rune magic while you're here? I mean, you did offer, right?”

Angie sighs and smirks.

“Sure, why not. I won't give you the cheat sheet, but I'll point you in the right direction.”

She spends a little while explaining the rules of rune magic in simple terms. It's not just “make shit up as you go”, and more “the rules are what feel natural to you”. In effect, rune magic is the art of shaping spells according to what naturally feels like the best possible use of the magic, and your own instincts are the best measure for that. She coaches you a little on how most people discover runes, using simple trial and error spells without much risk.

“Just keep pushing pennies around on a table or something. Something low energy, low risk and isolated in space. Rune magic is about discovery and exploration, developing your instincts and your natural sense of magic. Looks like time is running short though, you're about to wake up. And you won't like it. See you later.”

You frown and give her a wave, bracing yourself for whatever comes next.

You wake up on the couch. It's morning, and your alarm is blaring. Athena didn't come back last night.

Oh. That's what Angie meant.

You grab your phone and kill the alarm, sitting up and dialing Meliora's number. Jennifer shifts on the bed, curling up and pulling the blanket over her head. You wait for Meliora to pick up and spring to your feet the moment you hear her voice.

“Where is she?”

There's a pause.

“Mel, where is she?”

“She's safe. Dad is patching her up right now. We ran a training exercise to make sure that everything was fine. Your spells punched a hole in part of her core and she was leaking energy this whole time into a delicate part of herself. Dad's countermeasures slowed the damage, but we didn't realize how deep the wound was until she fell apart again. We're going to take her to see a specialist the moment she can walk around to try to get her core repaired. I didn't want you to feel bad about it, so I didn't let you know. She's going to be fine, I promise.”

The line goes dead. You look at your phone for a moment, staring at the screen. Guilt. Worry. Fear. Relief. Anxiety. You're not sure what to feel, but you're sick to your stomach.

>>
You pocket your phone.

“Jennifer? I'll be back later. If anyone asks, I'm sick today.”

You run out of the room and sprint down the hall. You set your alarm a little early, so there's still time to make a run and check on her before classes, but you don't think you'll be at school today. The halls are empty at the moment, or at least, they seem to be. You're in too much of a rush to really pay it much mind. You hurry to the closet, slam the button on the wall and run into the lab.

The first thing you notice is the smell. It's the pungent odor of rot and death, and it fills the entire room. In the center of the lab is a large room made from clear plastic, and the interior resembles an operating theater. Athena is in the center, her eyes lifeless and her chest open, her core exposed. Fenright is working feverishly with several glowing tools, adjusting and poking at different locations, tracing shapes on the surface of her core, which has now turned into a dull mass that looks like solid metal. Meliora is beside him, holding a tray of instruments for him. Neither of them seem to have noticed you.

How so? It doesn't seem that odd for someone in Oliver's position to want to cling to any semblance of family he can find. He's been an orphan for 3 months, that's just long enough for the loss to settle bone deep.

That's kind of my point. For someone in Kilgrave's position, it's perfectly natural and normal behavior when he controls people and does whatever he wants. It's behavior that only seems fine to the person performing the action. Or at least, that's the vibe I've been getting from the responses.

No, I'm pretty sure we're behaving as literally any other father would in the same circumstance.
>>

>>44786651
I'm talking the entire time we've known her. Not just this. BTQM was beating over the head about not controlling her every move interaction and thought and anons STILL wouldn't let her go.
>>
>>44786666
I guess I'm just drawing a parallel that might be in my own mind. Kilgrave abuses his powers for personal gain and then latches onto Jessica when she becomes the first person to resist him, fulfilling a void in his life he didn't know was there and plunging him into obsession. Athena filled a void in Oliver's life, and it's making him obsess as well. But again, it could just be my perceptions, at 3 AM, that are making me think that.
>>
>>44786648
QM, if you're trying to get us to abandon this character due to it not being planned, you're gonna have to just kill her, and then prep for the unreasonable backlash. We built Oliver as someone who's obsessed about a) helping others, and b) his family. She hits both.
>>
>>44786682
>I'm talking the entire time we've known her. Not just this.
So you're using anything that talks about the daughteru in any way as an excuse to continue to be butthurt over shit that's already done with because you're a salty faggot?

Noted.

You sit on the nearest table and wait. The moments drag on and turn into minutes, and the minutes drag on into what feels like hours. You watch them poke and prod at her core. Occasionally her body jolts, and twice her core emits jets of blue mist for several seconds. As you start to lose your patience and your nerve her chest closes itself back up and Athena stirs a bit. Fenright smiles and pats her on the head, walking out with Meliora.

“Well, I think that was a complete success. What do you think, an hour tops?”

Meliora points at you.

“I think we have company and I'm pretty sure you should grit your teeth for when he decks you.”

Fenright looks over at you for a moment.

“Are you going to deck me?”

“You're doing what you can to save her, right? So why would I punch you? It's not like Meliora lied to me over the phone, right?”

You get up and walk towards then, and Fenright smiles a bit.

“Yeah... I'm sorry about her waking you up last night, I just thought you should know about it. But she's going to be alright.”

Meliora looks away, avoiding your gaze. You can't blame her fully, she wanted to protect you from the knowledge that you'd hurt Athena, but it still stings. Well, either that or she feels guilty about lying to you for Fenright's sake. One or the other.

“That's great news. Anything I can do to help out? I want to do whatever I can. It's my fault after all, and I'm sorry about it. I mean that. I want to make it up to you and to her.”

Fenright shakes his head.

“Accidents happen, Oliver. You tried to help out, it didn't go as planned. She's safe and that's all that matters to me. Give her an hour or so to pull herself together and she'll be ready to head to the Bizarre to see a man about a repair spell. Aside from escorting her, there's not much else to do right now. You should really be in class right now though.”

You nod slightly.

“Family emergency, what can I say?”

Fenright laughs.

“Fair enough. She'll be ready to see visitors in a few minutes time. Want something to eat? You could probably do with some soup or something. Do you like noodles?”

You pause for a moment to consider potential poison plots, but you dismiss the notion.

“Ramen sounds fine to me. I haven't had breakfast yet.”

Fenright walks off towards a cabinet and pulls out two cups of noodles, putting both into a contraption that looks like a microwave, except that when he turns it on there's a sudden tearing sound and the door swings open again. He carries them over to you and offers you one, and you take it along with a pair of chopsticks. You'd swear that they were rigged, because they're unwieldy and hard to manage, and eventually you resort to asking for a fork to eat with.

“So Oliver, Meliora tells me that you've been helping her out a lot. We've hit a rough patch, but I want you to know that I'm really happy that my trust in you wasn't misplaced. Your heart is in the right place, at the very least.”

He gestures with his chopsticks towards Athena.

“And once we get her core patched up properly, even this little hiccup will be smoothed over, and Athena will be right as rain again, except, you know... significantly better in every conceivable fashion. So yeah. Cheers.”

He gently taps his cup of noodles against yours and takes a sip of the broth. You do the same to humor him.
