You are a Construct, an autonomous creature built from steel, and given life by ancient magic and modern ingenuity. Unlike most, you have mistakenly achieved sentience, and have received civil rights. You are also a detective with the city police.

You come out of low-power mode right on time, and dress yourself in your usual fashion, from simple jeans to cheap t-shirt. You take the bus to work, same as anyday, and arrive ten minutes late, as usual. Before entering the precinct, the only thing out of the ordinary about the day is the lack of a homeless person taking up the sidewalk beside the stone steps at work. But when you enter the precinct and greet Officer Sutherland at the front desk, only to hear her say the worst two words you can hear working this job, you have to hang your metal head. It's time for a morning meeting.

You drag yourself into the conference room. Seated there, each at a folding chair and almost all holding a hot cup of something, are the other detectives on your shift. Hanson, O'Donavan, Madden, Perez, McQueen, Durst, and way in the corner, by her lonesome, Russo. She seems to be uncomfortable rubbing elbows with the senior detectives, all of which have been on the job at least five years before her arrival. You wonder if she'll ever quit with the baby deer act.

She's still on the training ropes. After the meeting tell her she needs to sit by actual humans in further meetings, like we do.

>Sit by Russo

You walk over to Russo's reservation, and plant yourself in the chair beside hers. Rather, in the two chairs beside hers, as one might not hold you. Sometimes they do, but nobody needs to see a Con fall on his shiny metal ass today. Russo smiles at you, waving meekly as she tries to sip her coffee out of a paper cup. You shrug back, lacking the hardware for a real smile. A few minutes go by, and eventually the Chief graces the conference room with her presence. She marches up to the podium at the front, and takes a mental headcount. You see her sour face go full on lemon when she notices who's missing.

"Anyone seen Samson or Pedroni?" One of the others, probably Madden, mentions them being in the break room at the pinball table just a minute ago. You hope Pedroni hasn't busted the damn thing again. you managed to get Tomcat this time, and it's not cheap.

Luckily, the door to the conference room swings open, and before you is a five-foot-nine skeleton, dressed in a three-piece, pin striped suit complete with Bally brand shoes and a hat that came right out of Vegas in the 40s. He waves his hand, gesturing to the room in his flamboyant way, before speaking.

"I... have arrived."

You greet Samson kindly. He tips his hat, and proceeds to a seat across from you. Nobody ever had the hear to tell him a gentleman removes his hat indoors.

Just after Samson plants himself in a folding chair, the door swings open again. A punk, or the spitting image of one, enters the room with hunched shoulders and a glare that could skin a snake from ten yards. His eyes pass over the room, and settle on you. He stands six feet, has black hair dyed oil slick red, wears jeans under a letterman jacket from the local community college, and carries his piece in a cavalry holster. He gives a grim smile before speaking.

Dean laughs, and pats you on the shoulder before taking a seat beside Samson. With that, the meeting begins, albeit not without a few dirty looks from the Chief.

"As you all know, people are increasingly anti-police as of late, what with the popular media portraying us as corrupt. Now I haven't busted my ass for twenty years to see a cop take cash under the table, or let a perp slip for a favor. That's why we've started a new ad campaign, to stop some of the tide of hate mail I have to sift through everyday. Posters will be going up all over town, depicting the force as honest, trustworthy figures. I know some of you are rolling your eyes, at least those of you who can, but this is what our PR man says is best. So, I want suggestions from everyone on who goes up on these things."

The room begins murmuring. Samson proposes a piece of classic art, but the Chief shoots him down, saying it won't associate with the force enough. Dead recommends some pin-ups, but he is outright ignored.

The chief seems to like your idea. The rest of the meeting is just monotonous monologue from the Chief while you and the others steal glances at the clock. At about 7:30, you're finally released, and shuffle out of the conference room in a line. You meet Russo outside, and notice she seems a bit worn down, even for someone just getting out of one of those snoozefests.

"Sorry Sir, I just felt really nervous in there. Being around all those people, I started thinking about how all of them worked so hard to get where they are, and I got to skip the legwork just on recommendation. Made me feel kind of bad being in there with them."

>"Don't worry, Dean's never worked hard a day in his life."

Russo seems comforted, up until Sutherland runs over to you, looking like someone just told her the place was on fire.

"Detectives! Th-there's a gun! I mean a shooting! Someone's shooting at the museum! In the museum!" You ask her to calm down, and she tries, bless her. "They're asking for backup at the museum in Evergreen! They requested you, Pedroni and Samson by name!" You step back. If they asked for heavy hitters like the three of you, things must already be going south. You ask about SWAT's involvement. "They're on the scene, but they want you three to join the perimeter. Sir, please hurry!"

Before you answer, Dean and Samson are already dashing past you toward the front door. You see Russo chase after them.

You run after the others, and notice a few other officers heading the same way. You haul ass into the garage beneath the precinct, and Dean is off on his bike before you even catch up to Russo. He might have flipped you the bird, but you don't have time to puzzle it out.

You convince Samson to let you and Russo tag along in his Charger, occupying the entirety of the back seat by yourself and doing a pretty good number on his shocks along the way to the scene.

There, you clamber out and examine the building. The windows into the lobby have already been blown out by gunfire, and there's blood here and there around the perimeter. Officers are already down. You pull your piece and join the officers ducked down behind their armored cars. One of them briefs you on the situation.

Five men, three of them confirmed to be packing assault weapons and high-grade armor, and one suspected of being a psion. SWAT has already entered the building, but they haven't radioed in yet. Worst of all, there might still be patrons inside, alive or dead.

"Detective, we hate to ask this of you, but our boys have got their hands full in there. We'd like you, Samson and Pedroni to go in and see if you can't search the cleared floors for survivors." Dean agrees without hesitation, but Samson doesn't seem so eager. It isn't until Russo volunteers herself that he gets into gear, telling her to remain here with the others.

"What? No, it's fine I've got my vest! Sir, let me go in with you!" Russo looks to you as if you've got some final authority on the matter.

Russo seems both disappointed and relieved. And with that, the three of you remaining prepare to enter the building. The officers recommend taking more than the standard loadout, being that there are heavily armed and potentially trained gunmen inside. Samson only takes a few extra round of ammunition, but Dean grabs that and a stun baton, as well as a riot shotgun which he slings over his back with a strap.

You take one of the Mk4s from the officers outside, load it, and begin moving toward the building with Dean and Samson. As you approach, you begin to hear the scuffle going on inside. They must still be in a firefight somewhere in there, probably on the upper or lower floors.

Upon entering trough the shattered glass doors, the three of you search the immediate area for anyone. Nothing. you move toward the lobby, and come to the elevators. Dean is about to catch a lift up, but Samson stops him, reminding him he'll be a sitting duck if they notice him coming. You decide it's best to split up and cover more ground. Samson will take the basement, since he can see in the dark, and Dean will take the upper floors, since there are more likely to be hostiles.

You come to a sudden stop, and the doors slide open, revealing a large exhibit hall. Some of the pieces are missing, mostly paintings, and there are bullet casings on the floor in places.

"I can see that. Something about her sticks in my craw though." Dean follows you out, and the two of you begin scanning the area together, weapons ready. "Dunno what it is. Maybe it's the jacket. Feels like she's jacking my style." You tell Dean to stop dressing so much like a college girl, and the problem would be solved. He chuckles.

The floor seems to be clear, save for the three bodies of security officers you find. Poor guys. Just doing their nine to five. You confirm with Dean and get back in the lift. The next two floors go much the same, until you make it to the top floor, the crown jewel exhibit of the museum, where only the most rare and closely guarded exhibits stand on display. On the way up, Dean's eyes narrow.

You adjust your feet and form a wall in front of Dean. The elevator stops, and the doors slide open. Two men, both dressed in tactical gear, stand about twenty feet away, and open fire on you with assault rifles as soon as you appear. You raise your arm to protect your head just as the bullets begin colliding with your body, pushing you back. Dean's strength manages to hold you upright. After about one hundred and twenty some rounds of 5.56mm finish tenderizing you, the two men reach for extra magazines tucked into their vests, but are stopped when Dean reaches under your raised arm and pops both of them twice in the head with his service pistol. They crumble to the ground, twitching slightly, but otherwise pacified. Dean steps out from behind you and clicks his tongue.

"Shit. If we just nailed two, I don't have a lot of hope for whatever SWAT is up to. How you feeling, biggie?" You pluck a bullet out of your chest. You can already feel some of them rattling around inside you, but none of your critical systems seem to be offline.

Dean laughs. You've started to hate his laugh. He goes between the two men, snagging a rifle and a magazine, which he loads in and readies. You follow him forward, approaching a corner before you both hear a voice.

"What's going on over there? Number 4? Number 5?" Footsteps begin approaching, and Dean readies his weapon.

You signal to Dean to take it easy, and he shrugs. As the person approaching comes around the corner, you reach out an arm, and swing them around into the wall beside you. They fire off three rounds into your stomach before realizing what you are.

A short man with a shaven head is pressed up against the museum wall. He is wearing the same gear as the others, but his only firearm is a .45 that he holds in one shaking hand. You begin questioning him about his friends, but he can only hyperventilate and mumble. Dean grows impatient.

"Start talking, punk! They won't question another body in here!" He points the assault rifle at the perp's head, causing him to scream and flail around. You shout for Dean to cool it, when suddenly the look on his face turns from annoyed to distant. You ask what's wrong, then come to a dreadful realization. You turn to the perp, and see that his eyes are rolled back in his head. You let go of him just in time to receive a full-force punch in the head from Dean, which sends you flying across the room until you slide on the ground, knocking over a pedestal and the potentially ancient vase on top of it.

Dean stumbles toward you, twitching erratically. He never was bright, but to think he would let a psion crack his head open.

You bring your leg back and extend it forward with all the strength you have. Dean is sent up and back a good ten feet before colliding with the wall and falling on his face. You have enough time to stand before he figures out what elbows are and recovers as well. Seems like despite being taken over, Dean's bad attitude still makes him a hard dog to walk, seeing as how most of his movements look like struggles. You look over to the psion on the ground, clutching his head as he tries to order Dean on you again. Killing him is illegal. Psions are protected. But Dean was right. What do we know about psions? How many people can they control? Can they control people out of their line of sight? How do we know it's this guy who's the psion and not just some pawn?
>>
>>44781029
Psions are people, usually human or part human, who have some insight into the deep dark, the ether, or any of the other names for where scary things come from. It's unclear how they obtain it, but it's thought they're born with it. It allows them to do things normal people can't, from moving objects to reading minds, to controlling people's actions. A person's abilities can usually be amplified with practice.

Most controllers can hold a single person, but with a lot of practice they've been known to reach up to a dozen without hurting themselves.

They can only attach to someone they're aware of, but they can often hold the connection at long distances

Because I'm not that good at tricking people
>>

You level your gun with the psion's body and squeeze the trigger. A loud bang is accompanied by a spray of blood, then the sound of the shell clattering on the ground as you load the next one. Dean collapses on the ground, groaning and writhing. You check up on him, and deduce that he seems alright, but he'll be out of commission for a few days after getting lassoed and then cut loose so suddenly.

You check the remainder of the floor. No signs of other hostiles, but you do find one of the boys from SWAT, spread eagle on the ground in a pool of his own blood and shit. Lucky for you you can't actually smell. You close his eyes and finish checking the floor before scooping up Dean and lugging him downstairs.

On the ground floor, you run into Samson and a team of officers and medics who've just rushed the building. Seems like the hostages were all corralled into the basement, where Samson freed them, including the two boys from SWAT who survived. Poor bastards got their heads scrambled too, and most likely would have to be retired from the force after this. Samson himself took a few shots to the chest, but otherwise seemed fine. Everything looked like it was gonna be alright until you left the building and asked about Russo.

"Detective Russo? She was transported to Saint Juno's a few minutes ago. They think she might have had some kind of seizure. I-is that Detective Pedroni?" You look over to Dean, still dangling off your shoulder. The medics instruct you to place him on a stretcher, and you do. He doesn't seem to be responding to stimuli.

You leave Dean with the professionals and hitch a ride with Samson down to the hospital. His drab music only irritates you slightly as you speed down the highway. When you step out, he tips his hat, and is off like a shot across the parking lot.

Inside the main building, it takes you a full hour to make it through security, what with the ordinance still stuck on your torso, not to mention the need for a very thorough cavity search. When at last you're declared clean, you're given a wristband and directions to Russo's room on the second floor. You take the lift up, ignoring the stares of the nurses beside you.

You arrive at the room written on your wristband and enter as quietly as a man made of metal can. The sterile hospital room is decorated primarily with monitoring devices, and some wallpaper as old as Samson. Russo has no roommate, which makes it a little less tense for you. You approach her bed, across the room near the window, and take a look at her.

Her face is a little dirty. There's a dab of blood under her nose, which you suspect the nurses missed while they were wiping her off. She has an IV dripping pain meds into her arm, and nothing on but a paper gown, at least above the waist. Her legs are covered by a blanket, and she seems to be asleep. You look at the clock. Visiting hours are over at 6 for non-family members, meaning you've got plenty of time to hang around.

You find a tissue box by the bed, and drip a little water from the pitcher next to it onto a sheet. You carefully dab away the blood and dirt from Russo's face. She stirs a little, but doesn't wake up. After tossing the tissue, you plant yourself in the rocking chair nearby and stare at the wall.

Few people realize that without going into low-power, Cons experience time and space almost identically to organic creatures. That is to say, every moment of silent uncertainty is just as painful and agonizing to a Con as it is to a human. Though a Con may not know what a human feels, and vice versa, the substitutes in place, and therefore the reactions, are much the same. As you sit quietly beside Russo, you can't help but think. Somehow, you'd grown attached to the kid. She was a bit odd, but who among your rank wasn't? Samson was always spending his paycheck on suits and books by his friends from childoooh. Dean was either eating, cursing, or scribbling into some notebook while he blasted music loud enough to wake the dead right into his ears. And you, you were a man made of steel and butterfly farts. You look down at your chest, and see the dents made by the rifle ammo. They give you an odd mix of pride and anger.

Russo begins to stir again after a while. You watch as her eyes open, and peer around the room. Eventually they settle on you, and are filled with surprise.

"Sir?" Her voice is a little harsh. "Where am I? Weren't we at the museum?"

>Tell her everything
>"You fainted. They brought you here, and I came to check on you."
>"Don't worry about it, just rest."

"It's okay, rookie. You're in the hospital. You mind telling me what went on outside while I was busy getting lead detailing?"

Russo rests her head on the pillow and stares at the ceiling. You try not to stare, but something about her gaze is off.

"Sorry to trouble you, Sir. This is probably the last thing you wanted to do after going through the wringer like you did." You tell Russo it's no trouble. She doesn't seem convinced. "I, uh, heard there was a psion in there. Did you happen to run into him?"

>"Yeah."
>"Nah."

Happen to? I don't believe in coincidence kid. (leave it at that)

"He was there. He got the drop on Dean and did something to his head; controlled him. Tried to take him down, but..."

Russo seems unsatisfied, but accepts your answer. Before too long, a nurse shows up to check on her. According to her, Russo will be alright, but they want to keep her for observation. After the nurse leaves, Russo turns to you again.

"Sorry, Sir, I probably won't make it to the office tomorrow. You can go ahead and go, I don't mind being here alone." You ask about Russo's family, and when they might show up. "Ah, they live a pretty long way away. They wouldn't come all the way out here just for a little fainting spell. Anyway, they probably miss you at the precinct."

>"They can keep on missing me."
>"Alright. Get some rest, kid."
>"You sure you don't want me to stick around?"

There's gonna be hell to pay back at the museum, and the Cap will be wanting a debrief on the whole matter.

>Run a hand over the dented chassis

"Probably couldn't hurt to get these buffed out as well."

Call if you need anything.

Gotta get to the debrief and start that paperwork.

You give Russo a soft knuckle to the cheek, at least relatively, and tell her to get better soon. As you leave the room, you try to keep quiet, and stay fairly silent until you're back out on the street. You call for a cab to bring you back to the precinct, and while you wait, you absentmindedly run your hand over the dents in your body. It's the second time in a couple of weeks you've gotten a perfectly good outfit ruined. You'll have to send Dean the bill.

The can arrives ten minutes late, and drops you off fifteen minutes too slow for your wallet's taste. You make your way into the precinct and are greeted by the officers and detectives, who congratulate you on coming back alive. Sutherland stands on her tip-toes to plant a kiss on your cheek, leaving a smear of lipstick on your head. Even the Chief seems to be in a good mood, considering. You and the others on the scene report in, and attend a debriefing.

"I want to thank everyone who participated in the operation this morning. We accrued some damages, and some museum property was badly damaged, but thanks to the efforts of the police force, there were no civilian fatalities." The room claps. "Those of you with cases or beats to work, get back to them. Dismissed."

You wander out of the conference room and into the lockers for a change of clothes. After pulling off your shirt and tossing it in the garbage, you notice you're being watched. You turn to see Samson. His empty, glowing eye sockets are aimed at you like a pair of headlights. You feel uneasy, and ask him what the matter it.

"I spoke to Dean's doctor. They say he's lucky for his constitution, or he might not have survived the events today. Getting invaded by a psion is rough. Getting invaded by two at once? Now that's a way to go." You look at Samson a while longer before he about faces and makes his way out of the locker room again. You're left holding a black T-shirt that reads the name "Psychic Surgery"

That'll be it for today, and like I said I'm gonna try to keep this arc going until tomorrow, then back to my original thread, and then I'll take the weekend to think of new cases for this thread and bring it back on Monday.

Thanks to everyone who came by, and I hope you had a good time. I also hope the archives get sorted out, for everyone's sake.

Hope to see you again in the next thread!
