You are Laura Kinney, mutant vagrant.

Half the world vanishes as a shard of glass tears along one side of your skull. You feel the pressure of the expanding gases, Zhang Lei in his vaporous form, lift you off your feet and hurl you into the air, coating your skin with a hundred or more tiny speckles of broken window. Before you hit the ground, you’re already assessing the damage – feeling out your contours, dissecting the pain of the cuts and the bruises into guesses and estimates.

Minor injuries, save for your eye. You will heal quickly, and be back at peak performance in less than a minute.

The gas recedes, washing backwards over the lavish apartment as if the reverse recording of the earlier explosion, and soon enough Zhang is standing before you in human form, poised as if to move at a moment’s notice, his sunken eyes watching you carefully.

Just behind you, a trio of Laylas are crouching down beside Nico, who appears to have manifested some kind of shimmering barrier. She does not look combat ready – from her posture, you speculate that she has little if any proficiency in fighting, despite her apparent superhuman abilities.

You estimate that John will arrive in less than a minute.

I'm not sure how his gas form works, but a strong wind might disrupt him and force him to solidify to avoid damage. Purely speculating though.

I wonder how hard J can beat the air with his wings.

The Nico plan hinges on her having enough control to Susan Storm it and considering she's not combat ready I don't know if we should risk her
>>
If we kick our way to the kitchen and find a surprise suply of flour because Zhang likes to bake, we can spread it in the air and explode his gasseous ass with a carelessly lit match.
>>
>>44751141

Crusty, you might want to archive now before you get misarchived
>>
>>44751390
Yeah, I mean if we don't grab his attention Nico will be defenseless so we better make him keep his eyes on us

>>
>>44751407
my next idea would have been to activate the sprinkler system to 'wet' him down...because he might represent a selection of particles suspended in the air...

I've never heard of a gaseous enemy being particularly weak against electrical damage before...not saying is doesn't happen mind you...
>>
>>44751504
Now this is a slightly better plan then waving fans in the air or trying to suck him up with a hand vacuum

>(1/2)

You are confident that you should have little confidence in Nico’s abilities.

SNIKT.

A familiar, sharp pain stabs along your knuckles, dulled instantly by a rush of adrenaline. You push yourself to your feet, your wounds no longer mattering to you now that you’ve determined their paltry nature. Zhang steps back slightly, the shine of your claws sparking in his eyes, and you rush across the apartment toward him. You must keep him away from Layla, keep him away from Nico.

You slash at him, and note that, rather than dissipating, he leans away from your claws, a hiss escaping his throat as their edges just about fail to graze his skin. Turning your effort to retaining your momentum, you spring into an arcing kick, the blade set into your foot sliding free of its sheath, aiming to drive down through his shoulder, along his ribcage, and through his right lung.

He manages to dart aside, surprisingly quick for a man that appears so physically haggard, and you hear him mutter something in Cantonese, though his voice is too low for you to make it out. He has however, placed himself within easy reach of your arm, and you…

You see him tense, his stomach wrenching, as you move in for the final blow. You feel sick, and… you stop.

He explodes into a cloud of mist. Almost immediately, he reforms beside you, and you feet a boot slam into your midsection. The floor vanishes from beneath your feet, a clearly inhuman force behind the blow, and you sail across the room, striking the opposite wall hard.
>>
>(2/2)

Fractured ribs (three). Heavily bruised abdomen. Small amounts of internal organ damage.

Minor injuries.

What concerns you is that you stopped. You seized up, just as you had him cornered.

Something is happening to you.

As you pick yourself up off the floor, a huge, winged blur crashes through the remains of Zhang’s windows, sweeping the man off his feet. They tumble together across the room, before Zhang forsakes physical form.

John.

You think. You must secure the artifact you came for. John can incapacitate this threat.

Zhang’s storage space is located below his apartment, on a hidden floor that does not appear on the building’s schematics. You must get there, and you must get there quickly.

On the other side of the apartment, Zhang reforms, and is quickly pummeled through his couch by a beam of bright blue light. His silence is telling – he flails his arms, the force of the blast clearly dazing him, but he makes no sound. As John charges over the length of the room, he dissipates, his gaseous form rushing to meet his attacker.

You turn your attention away, and, taking the quickest available route to your destination, plunge your claws into the floor at your feet. All it takes for a small section of the floor to give way under your weight is a quick, semi-circular flourish. You drop down into an unlit expanse, the sound of your impact echoing loudly through the dark. Up above, you hear a crash.

All around you are various glass cases, each of them housing a dim, strange shape.

Something drops down beside you, and you immediately prepare to attack.

“Owwwww…” Layla – two Laylas, after striking the ground – rubs her head, nursing a slight bruise.

You realize that you are alone with her.

It is uncomfortable.

Layla is probably most "suitable" to handle dangerous objects. Since there is no original, as long as she has a clone that isn't affected by whatever is going on, she can just dispel the one that is.

>>
You are Layla Miller, mutant vagrant.

Upstairs, your heart beats fast. You feel it hammer against your chest, the world writhing around you, little making sense. You think you nearly died? JJ wrestles with the mist man, battering him across the room whenever he settles upon a solid shape, but… it kinda looks like, whenever he turns misty again, he comes back without a bruise on his body.

Nico shouts something. There’s a staff in her hand, with a large, golden circle on one end. “Suck it up?”

Downstairs, your hearts beat fast. You’ve hit your head.

You hear something like a huge, seriously massive vacuum switching on.

Laura looks down at you. Her eyes are wide, and silent, and strange, her brow furrowed slightly. She looks at you like you’re… in the way, or something. Maybe you are? Since everyone started fighting, you’ve kinda been too frightened to move.

“Do you remember what we are here for?” She says, bluntly, her voice flat and uninflected. She sounds different from when she talks to JJ.

You nod slowly, looking around the room. Tablet. Sandy looking tablet with writing all over it.

“We must find it.”

“R-right!”

Okay, you got this.

Stamping your foot down, you spread out. You feel a sudden rush of dizziness at the exertion, and your perspective doubles, triples, quadruples, more eyes and ears and feet and things to think and say and do suddenly exploding into your world. Twenty-three of you, plus the three upstairs.

You disperse. There’s so much stuff in here. Mr. Negative must be loaded beyond all belief to scrounge up all this crap. Most of it looks like old ass – bits of stone or wood or rusted sword that should be in a museum, somewhere. Some of it, though… some of it is pretty cool.

And you think you deserve to take something small home, at least.

Nobody’ll notice if you… just… yoink… this!

You pluck an old, dark red spearhead from its stand. Immediately, you’re surprised by how light it is, and how the blade shines like steel yet seems to have a consistency more like… like bone? There are strange, twisting patterns that run along its edge, and it is cruelly serrated on one side, with a set of barbs protruding from where the remains of the haft meet the blade.

In other words, it looks righteously badass.

Clutching it like a dagger, and feeling like some ye olde thief, you take in everything you can about the room. You’ve run around in circles upon circles upon circles, but there’s no trace of anything looking remotely like what you’re after.

“Uh, Laura…” One of you tugs on her jacket. She flinches when she looks down at you. “I don’t think that thing is even here…”

Ahahaha, YES! Gae Bolg get!
>>
>(2/2)

You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

You’re not entirely sure what just happened, but you’re glad it did.

Nico said something, and then… it was like a whirlwind just tore its way into the room, sucking up the mist guy and hurling him straight through the blasted window-panels that line one side of the apartment. He hasn’t come back, so you assume he’s had enough of being thrown around and punched silly for one night.

Nico clutches her staff (what? Where’d that come from?) tightly, a profoundly relieved look on her face. You can smell the adrenaline coursing through her, a thing equal in parts of fear and excitement.

“Wow.” You give her a thumbs up. Your bones ache little, but you’ll be fine. “Nice work.”

“…Thanks.” She says, her voice quavering.

A few feet away, where the couch once sat, the carpet bulges slightly, and a trapdoor opens in the floor. Laura emerges, her eyes surveying the scene in silence, at least a dozen Laylas surfacing behind her. You immediately notice the faint echo of a nasty gash along her face, a slight spark of anger lighting up in your chest.

“…You okay?”

Laura nods. Her stance is a little forlorn, though, like she’s trying to make herself marginally smaller.

“The item was not here.”

Oh.

Damn.

Well.

“No biggie.” You shrug. It is sort of a biggie – it means you came here for almost nothing, and now you have to tangle with the Bratva, too. You kinda get the impression Laura is taking it kinda hard, though, and you don’t really want that. “We’re okay, and that’s the important thing.”

She doesn’t look reassured.

You’re about to make some kind of awkward bid at levity, when you notice something small, and red, and vaguely metallic in one of the Laylas’ hands, and your eyes narrow down at her.

“…What’s that?”

All eyes turn toward her. Including the eyes of several other Laylas.

“It, uh…” She looks to and fro, what you assume she assumes is an innocent grin on her face, and points accusingly at the Layla next to her. “It was her idea!”

“What!?” Squawks Layla, eyes widening with shock at the betrayal. “You did not just…”

And then you have about twenty tiny people all arguing with each other about some… dumb knife, or something.

You groan.

Its spear of death for medieval medicine.

Like seriously in what occasion we would actually use it? It probably can't stab the unstables,(magic users(/reality warpers), high regenerators, invincible people, people who can dodge shit(teleporters, speedsters), or anyone who cant be precived to be there) and it's not like we want to kill anyone that bad. And most people we might kill would make situation worse in their death.

No, they are fundamentally different.

The Rauoskinna doesn't have a will of its own to bring darkness to the world and cause death, it's pretty much a compendium of black magic that held such knowledge and power in it that you would be simply put, the best magician ever.

I think one of the selling points was you would get so gud at magic that you could control Satan himself.

So it's more a tool than the Necronomicon would be, and only cause problems in the way that people coming after it would provide.

But I forgot a lot about it, so I guess I'll go reread about it instead of spreading probable misinformation.

It stops when you lift the Layla with the… thing… up by her wrist, a unisoned gasp rising from the crowd. Carefully, you pluck the dagger – actually, on closer inspection, it looks more like the top of a spear – from her grip, giving it a long, hard look.

“Argh, for real?” She complains, squirming a little.

“We don’t know what it is.” You explain.

“Yeah.” Interjects a second Layla, with a knowing, superior expression on her face. She edges slightly closer to you, as though to solidify her stance. “It could be dangerous.”

Layla looks down at Layla, her eyes narrowing.

“…You and I are enemies now.”

You inspect the object, taking in its odd texture, the way it seems to hang almost weightlessly in your grasp. It smells… you think it smells a little like blood.

This definitely isn’t for Layla hands.

Your ears perk up at the sound of heavy footsteps pounding their way up the stairs below. Ten men, at least, most of them probably quite heavy-set.

“…You guys should probably stay here a sec.” You say, motioning to Nico and… Laylas.

…Eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen…

Laura notes the inflection in your voice, her nose twitching as she sniffs at the air. Her claws slide free with a sharp, metallic SNIKT.

Nico and Layla hang back while you take up position by the door with Laura, counting under your breath as the footsteps make their way closer.

…fifteen, sixteen…

Sixteen.

You smell the rush of adrenaline in their veins, the sweat on their palms, the cool metallic scents of their guns. You plant your feet securely against the floor, your shoulder against the door, and…

You slam your weight against it.

The force causes the hinges to snap, the full weight of the metallic door (minus the hole carved into it by Laura) teetering to one side. You hear confused shouting, a rush of panic and fear exploding through your senses, and the slab of metal goes skidding down the stairs outside, sweeping a number of men straight off their feet, very probably shattering their ankles on its way. The men behind them look up at you, fumbling with their weapons, and you take it has a cue to leap across onto the bannister running down the stairs, sliding down its length toward them. You propel yourself into an acrobatic flip when they re-align their weapons, landing in their midst, a quick backhand propelling a pair of them across the landing.
>>
>(2/2)

There is shouting, most of it in a language you don’t understand, and attempts are made to turn their weapons on you. You duck, causing them to pause, and feel a rush of metabolic fire flow through you as your wings explode from your back, their immense breadth and the force of their emergence sending those closest to you screaming through the air.

You turn, intent on clearing the landing, and hear a familiar weight hit the ground.

For a moment, you think your senses have failed you somehow.

You look back, and see two of Negative’s men standing over a fallen Laura. Even with her mask down over her face, you can sense he disbelief that radiates off of her.

A flash of sudden, white-hot rage bubbles in your veins.

>(1/2)

You feel the blood rush to your head, scratching at your veins, scrabbling, pushing for release. Clouds of aching, bloody red close in on your vision, and you’re the bones in your hands suddenly feel like they’re on fire, like something is burning its way out of you, searing you up from the inside out. You see yourself in that instant as a man in a pillar of fire, the flames blazing carelessly around him, turning everything he sees and touches and smells and love to little more than ash.

You have to release this. It has to go somewhere.

You… you…

You swipe at one of the men charging up the stairs toward you – with the hand holding the spearhead, though not intentionally. The blade slides effortlessly through his hand, sending his fingers and much of his knuckles arcing through the air. He screams, and the smell of blood roars around you… and… and you think you can feel things clearly, for a second.

You leap upon the men standing over Laura, hurling them back across the landing toward their fellows. Every action a labor against your inner fire, every move made cautiously, so as not to send to into a red from which there is no return, you leap into their midst, elbows and fists and knees and feet lashing out in all directions, sending men spinning and twisting through the air, putting them to the ground with shattered bones and twisted limbs.
>>
>>44756099
Oh we've run out of it plenty of times.

>>
>>44756099
We have just enough, generally and spend our points as we need to.
>>
>(2/2)

When nobody remains on their feet, you merely stand there, surveying the carnage.

Nobody is dead, you tell yourself.

Nobody is gone forever.

The red continues to pulse in the fore of your skull, demanding blood. Carefully, you trudge your way between the groaning forms that litter the ground, crouching down beside Laura. Her eyes stare at you from behind her mask, huge, green, bright. Your brain is so full of fire that you can barely comprehend their expression. Slowly, tentatively, she brings her hand to your chest, and you feel the red begin to drain away.

You breathe out a long, haggard sigh of relief.

“You alright?”

You don’t recognize the sound of your voice. It sounds like you, but you don’t recognize it, somehow. You feel like an impostor in your own body. A meek, tiny, frail impostor, squatting in a body of pure fire. You don’t know why, but you think you should sound… grander. Brighter. Not a bonfire, or a pyrefire, or a forest-fire, but a sun-fire, burning forever in the terrible, ancient silence of outer space.

Laura nods slowly, accepting your help in standing, but you don’t see much truth behind the motion. You want to push further, but… just… being careful with her, just restraining yourself from gripping her tightly and working out the rest of your energy on her, it takes all your energy.

Despite your strength, you feel weak.

“One of them may still be able to talk.” Says Laura, her voice cutting through the beating of your heart, reminding you of why you’re even here.

“Yeah…”

The stench of blood curdles in your brain, twisting, churning…

Reminds me of a few ideas:

1) redwood trees with the power to turn to steel when struck with any appreciatable force (basically collossus's power, but reactionary).
Plant one, harvest the seeds, put all over the scar and you can turn it into a forrest thats nigh on impenitrable by sentinals, provided the trees are thick enough.
Also useful for mutants to use to craft and sell items for cash.
2) X-gene pollen mold: Stick it on the underside of street drains and let it belt out otherwise normal pollen. Which with a none-affective X gene in it triggers the scanners. Get that round new york and if the sentinals ever get called in, they'll basically go on a rampage.

He can keep mutating seeds till he finds one he wants then go from there, the others can easily be disposed of. Itd be very trial and error (made significantly easier by molecular vision if we got it).

As for obtaining the seeds: Not a clue, but considering he regularly gets paid a fair chunk from these jobs, putting in an order with someone might work out. Seeds are not very expensive.

>>44756653
So long as it means they dont bring in kill bots, thats a bonus. The inconvenience means we gain protection from further methods.

Eventually, she locates one whose leg you’ve merely broken, heaving him up so that he’s sitting up against the wall. A tall, spry creature with a clean shaven head and a brow full of metal, he regards you with utter terror.

It’s not hard to get him to talk. He speaks better Cantonese than English, and Laura speaks better Cantonese than you, so… Laura talks to him.

It goes on longer than you thought it would. They babble back and forth, the noise plucking and picking at your brain, and, from nowhere, imaginings of what he’s saying begin to bubble up in your mind. He’s calling you stupid, he’s calling you a failure, he’s calling Laura a slut, he’s telling you Creeper knows where you live and who you live with and he’s going to make you pay…

You tell yourself it’s all in your head.

Eventually, Laura stands, apparently done.

“He says that the Triads have hired members of the Sinister Six before, but not as a group.” Her brow furrows slightly. “Unless, he says, we mean the five guys pretending to be the Sinister Six. I don’t believe we mean them.”

You shake your head. No, that Electro was definitely the real deal.

Leaving the man to bawl about his broken leg, you fetch Nico and Layla. The two of them tread carefully through the sea of battered bodies on their way down, Nico looking more put-out than anything, while Layla averts her eyes from some of the more disturbing injuries.

You make your way out into the chill of night, the cool breeze doing wonders for you.

Nico sighs heavily, checking the bottom of her outfit for hints of blood.

“Well, that was a waste of time.” She glances up at you, and shrugs. “You want to head back to the office? We could plan our approach with the Russians.”

We seriously need to get our head looked at, this sort of thought pattern is not normal for JJ.

I think we still have a bit of demonic squatter syndrome.
>>
>>44756714
While technically possible, what you're talking about is so boring and time-intensive that I seriously hope we don't bother.

Besides, I think there are a lot of factors that you're missing out on, such as how you seem to think disposing of these plants is gonna be remotely easy.

First of all, they will almost certainly defend themselves, making it difficult to eradicate this shit.

Second, considering we can talk to plants, it might be emotionally scarring to murder all these plants like they're as low-tier as Jews.

So basically, the equivalent of what you're asking for may as well be activating the X-genes of shitloads of plants and letting them run rampant unless we go through a huge pain in the ass to contain it, which we would likely fail at either way.

Besides, I GUARANTEE you as soon as ANYONE finds out we can activate x-genes Sentinels will be deployed in EXTREME force.

This isn't a power to go using willy-nilly for amusing effects.

You just pour a bit of blood into a bag of a few thousand seeds, shake it about for 5minutes and then wait for 10. Then its pick out the one you want with the vision powers and get rid of the rest. If there just seeds with genetic changes, it should not be hard to use a fire, and the fire resistant ones can just be crushed. Not to mention JJ can tell them to die with his powers.

Dont do it near other plants? i.e. underground where nothing else grows?

Your blowing this a little out of proportion, though the concerns can be valid without being careful.

That sounds as wise as hitting a grenade with a fucking hammer to see what happens.

Maybe I'm being a little too cautious, but what you want to do is so flagrantly irresponsible and dangerous that it's unreal.

The changes take time to manifest and seeds are dormant by nature, so unlikely to have any power manifestations without actually growing the plant, aspecially if we tell them "Stay asleep".

Just kidding muggas.

JJ has gained INNER RADIANCE.

JJ may now choose to, instead of channeling sunlight into one of his powers or attributes, spend charges for a less pronounced power boost to all his natural and unnatural abilities. And, it sort of feels like there's this slight... presence... around him, like... some kind of field that extends his reach slightly, almost like... some kind of telekinesis.

>>44758104

Good to see I ain't the only one who thought it was shit.

When your story's darker than Worm and more autistically complex than Homestuck, you have a goddamn problem.

The ending was good, though.
>>

JJ already has the Solar panels, check the Pastebin.
>>
>>44758209
I thought the setting is pretty great, but the plot was all kinds of stupid/convoluted and the writing got really dull at places. I still need to finish it one of these days. And pick up where I left off with Twig.
>>
>>44758209
Is the ending worth it? I got to the 12th arc and couldn't be assed to finish it. Blake just kept getting fucked and it wasn't enjoyable
>>
>>44758104
>>44758209
I stopped reading Pact around section 12-13.

I really liked up until Blake became a Boogeyman really.

The problem with it is that there was never any downtime between intense shit happening, it wore me down, and when Blake essentially lost all his friends it really lost whatever comf still remained.

By the time I got tired and skipped to the end I felt like a worn out husk. Maybe that was the point.

I never finished Worm either, I read it nonstop for fucking DAYS, and eventually I was decided to take a break and never came back.

Twig is the best one yet though. Sy is bae.
>>
>>44758273

Depends on what you mean by 'worth it'. It's a happy ending in the same way Worm's was; everyone's shit got fucked, but the great evil's dead and there's a good deal of hope for the survivors.

Blake gets turned into a bird and flies off into the sunset with Evan (in an entirely platonic way because fuck you Evan's a kid). Given that the alternative was oblivion, and that as a bird he's finally free from all the bullshit that's been piled on him, it's actually a lot nicer than it might sound.
