The moment you visited the Medicae Bay to check on how the autopsies were going you felt completely sick and fell unconscious, at the same time from their corpses several Necron constructs emerged and started to devour everything on their wake, be it organic or artificial and dead or. Why did you suddenly fell was something that both puzzled and worried you; was it really because spending so much time so deep underground was starting to take a toll on you or maybe because you were somehow connected to the Necrons and that activation affected you somehow?

To defeat all those invading scarabs you needed to create two traps, an explosive one with some grenades and another that was basically a stockpile of flammable gases and liquids that ended creating a massive thermal deflragration once you managed to attract the remaining creatures towards its core and detonated it by using a handmade Molotov. Still, alien machinery and inhuman circuits made those devourers be able to even survive such inferno, not even being in the center of a massive bonfire was enough to kill the entirety of them; to completely finish them off you also had to discharge several shots of your acidic plasma on them until all the charred husk that became the remains of the explosions ended turning into a small melted mound to completely assure that they were destroyed.

You had saved as many people as you could but most of the nurses, medics and patients had perished in that encounter, the outcome of that attack wasn’t completely negative thought, you had managed to discover a secret of the Necron possessed humans that you didn’t knew before. They each have had a canoptek scarab inside of them that activates a few days after their death, if that scarab is destroyed then the body won’t be able to create more copies of the necron construct and it will simply be a normal corpse, there was also the very faint hope of a possible scarab subtraction procedure that might and only might return those humans to their former selves.

You walked with all the survivors towards the main entrance door and with a quick movement you pressed the activation runes that awakened the disruptor field of your falcata shaped power sword shortly before using it to cleave an exit from the debris and scrap metal sealed door. The survivors, mostly medics and individuals with little to no combat experienced that just happened to be there, helped you by removing the pieces that managed to cut. After little more than five minutes the first rays of electrical light started to make their way onto your side, you had finally managed to open a breach.

“Stand back!” You say at them, who immediately complied.

You grab your Meltaser Pistol and aim at the door; you have wanted to use this beautiful piece of technology since a long time and finally you will honour its machine spirit with a great task according to its purpose and creation. With a flash of thermal and electrical energy you see how from its red hot muzzle an invisible ray of agitating air and ionizing beams discharges over the remnants of the door. Instantly it starts to melt and become electrified; the slag turning metal getting a orange hue and then completely red hot while several white sparks form from its core and start flying in all directions until the door is no more and the only thing that remains is a small melted aperture.

“The wounded ones first, go go!” You were pretty sure that all the scarabs had been killed but as a caution measure you would be the last one to leave the hospital.

When they were all out you finally left the cursed hospital and grabbed several pieces of scrap around to melt them with your Meltaser pistol and once again seal the entrance. Thankfully you noticed that there were several people around willing to help you and that they were gladly throwing pieces of debris and scrap to help you with your task.

This was nothing but a small victory in a sea of defeats. Your resources were running pretty low, especially medicines now due to most of them becoming devoured or destroyed by the Scarabs. In the faces of the small group of survivors that you had managed to gather there wasn’t only fear and hunger now but also a glimpse of hope in their eyes. Sooner or later the Imperium would notice this invasion and would do something about it; you had the promise of the Inquisitor about this…the Omnissiah and the Emperor protects you all but in the meantime you’ll have to protect them by acting as their pawn and agent.

Before you could even notice a pair of weeks passed after that. During that time you became completely focused on enduring as a species and worked hard to turn your small surviving settlement into a fully defensive base with even a modicum of commodities. Some of your men managed to find and underground river that connected with the sewers and managed to create some aqueducts that were the base to forming a small hydroponic garden of cyan bioluminescent mushrooms and specie of edible moss of white coloration and sour taste.

Along with that also came the fully awakening of the local Manufactorum and proper blessing to make it into a holy Sacro-Manufactorum worthy of any Forge-world. From its cog and piston filled belly several items started to pour and once everybody was well equipped with armor and weapons we all were able to create novelty items that made our lives somewhat more peaceful, among them there was a temperature and humidity controller that turned that humid and cold place into a dry and warm one and several low powered lights that illuminated the constant darkness that used to surround the village. All those items were pretty commonplace in peace times but now they were a luxury that most of them didn’t believed that would ever experience again. There was still fear of course, but with your help and the help of the rest you managed to create a small faint hope on their souls and sprouted a sense of community and esprit that was really needed in such despair filled days.

With people more armed the runs towards the metropolis above to get resources became more and more successful, the city was now full of wandering and windswept Possessed ones that were in a constant state of life and death thanks to the abominable Necron constructions that tainted their bodies but still they seemed to have an animal like mind and were easy to avoid and hide from if you didn’t let the stress and panic overtake you, thanks to all those travels your group managed to plenty of resources and even a small group of working vehicles.

All those transports that they had managed to rescue were mundane and designed for a civil and working purpose but in this situation they were one of the most useful assets that you could count with, none of the Possessed seemed to have a vehicle with itself and the only exception to this rule was the pilot of the Necron Knight.

Not everything was perfect thought, the old hospital continued sealed with melted scrap metal. Not a single sound has come from its interior since you all left it but the fear of encountering those scarabs once again has made them not want to try to pry it open. A small warehouse has been created instead and while not the most ideal place to conduct operations or heal people it was the best you had to offer.

Even if everything seemed to have turned better there was still plenty of work to do; the project with the construction of the Radio to contact with the people on Orbit is about 90% done and should be finished at any day now. The Tank isn’t ended and will still require some hard work to be complete but the project is advancing at pretty striding steps. The moment it is built we all plan to arm ourselves and ascend towards the city to hijack the Space Elevator and ascend into the skies, hopefully once we meet again with the rest of the Imperium they will be able to counter-attack.
>>
>>44750299

Today is another day, maybe mundane, maybe horrific. Only the Emperor knows. After you wake up and clean yourself you proceed to read all the memos about people that wanted to contact you for one reason or another. The first message was a vox-data archive between two people, one with a rough voice and the second with an imbecile like speech problem and one of the deepest voices that you heard, they were talking something about Petra, the psyker leader of the Nox Vox but since the deeper idiotic voice kept interrupting you didn’t quite get what was it about, the second message was a formal appointment by the techpriest that you contacted several days ago to ask him to make a list of all the people that were under your command, according to his message he had ended his sacred task and was asking for a date to lend it to you, the third and fourth message were personal request to gather the final objects for the Radio and Tank respectively.

>Go check the full list of your armed forces.

You contact with the same Logis techpriest that has been working hard and gathering data and ask him to come by the room that you have assigned to yourself. While he comes you should have more than enough time to eat. As you sit down and grab a glass of artificially created milk and some glowing shroom bread you ponder on your thoughts...back in the day you used to share some good meals with your daughter Alaria and right now you are eating all along this tasteless piece of dairy... Even your recently brought psyber eagle has gone missing when all the chaos and confusion invaded the city. You were now surrounded by people that were under your command and honored you yet you felt alone.

The sound of some metallic knuckles hitting against the soft wood of your door got you out of your pessimistic train of thoughts and made you return to reality. You didn't knew how long had it passed but the there was nothing of the breakfast left, only some spare crumbs and white-ish droplets.

He continued calling until you opened the door and received him, before speaking a word he bent down as if you were some form of royalty icon and gave you the scroll he had worked hard on. You grabbed and read it and it wasn't until you were over that he stopped being bent:

>Go check what the Nox Vox warriors want.
After reading it all you thanked the techpriest and honored his hard work with some praising words that while apathetic sounding in your robotic voice were more than enough to make him feel completely proud. He didn't had a mouth anymore but you were pretty sure that if he did he would be smiling right now and so would he continue for some days to come.

You got the scroll for yourself and keep it somewhere safe in your room before heading out to meet with the members of the Nox Vox. Those group of warriors weren't part of the martian cult and kind of felt like stranger to some degree. While most of the survivors that confronted your group didn't knew each other at the start they had already established some strong bonds among themselves and that is why they had some trouble to integrate with your group and the rest.

Those miners hard their own culture and set of beliefs and while religious clashes had happened between their strange superstitions and the martian dogma none of them has even reached to violence. As time passed thought those allies for convenience managed to create some friendships and even a romance or two among the other two allying factions, the Telemathans and your own men. Even then those cases were exceptional and they still lived somewhat separated from the rest.
>>
>>44751850

When you got close to where all the Nox Vox members lived you were suddenly struck by a image of despair and sadness that contrasted hard with the small yet strong hope that was growing among the rest of the survivors. Inmediately you were taken towards Petra used to reside, unlike the rest of the Nox Vox she wasn't a warrior but a seer, she had been guiding their family and friends towards prosperity all her life and now all she could do was wait. It seemed that either being unable to save them from the apocalypse or some obscure visions made her slowly plunge into a depression that at the end...managed to finish her off.

As you entered inside you found a bathtub full of foul smelling blood that bubbled heavily and from whose bubbles small bursts of smoke came. She had both cut her wrists and used a toaster to electrocute herself. The result was a bath full of water that became electrified and made her spasm heavily and quickly bleed to death. Neither the electrons flooding and burning her flesh nor the vital sanguine leaving her body were enough to finish her off immediately and with her last breath of blood she ended writing a name on the wall: "Heracor"

The moment you saw that image you felt your two hearts clenching at the same time and pressing against your chest like a Bolter round. Several stutters came out of your mouth and sounded like a somewhat annoying electronic chirping. Holding to yourself you slowly managed to speak and mutter some words.

"My condolences to Petra, she was a really great human being and a guide to all of us along with a marvelous leader. We today have lost one of the Emperor's priceless. 01010010 01100101 01110001 01110101 01101001 01100101 01110011 01100011 01100001 01110100 00100000 01101001 01101110 00100000 01110000 01100001 01100011 01100101..."

Some of the members with tears on their faces nodded and proceeded to hug your massive frame, such reactions and contact was something you weren't used to but as best as you could you complied and tried to hug them back without squishing their feeble organic flesh and bones.

"You were their people, even if she wasn't a mother and she was barely scratching the age of maternity I am sure that she considered all of you like her own sons. Why do you think that she was thinking or experiencing to do something like that?"
>>
>>44752870

The group that was closest to her got in a small circle around you, before they could speak you heard some distant screams and crying, it was from the Ogryn that was ordered to act as her bodyguard, her sudden loss and the grotesque body that she left behind had been completely devastating for someone with the mind of a child like him, at the end with the help of other Nox Vox they managed to move him away from the corpse before he ended doing anything more stupid than usual. After an awkward silence one of them proceeded to speak.

"She was our leader yes but I don't think that she truly liked to consider herself that back in life. She was born with a feeble body but a prodigious mind...she could find the ores and the rich minerals and we would extract them, she didn't liked to consider herself special but only part of us..."

Another proceeded to speak.

"Since her powers arose our small group lived a massive boon, not only in riches but also in number of personnel. She was the reason of why we were starting to grow and why we managed to survive so far. Maybe now that her visions twisted and started showing terrible things she silently suffered until she couldn't take it anymore."

"She suddenly woke up in the middle of the night screaming because of the nightmares. At first we didn't consider it much, we all did at some point, we are all humans and are terrified after all."

It was true, even you suddenly awakened some days covered in cold sweat and with your two hearts beating fast. The Necrons simply terrified everybody.
>>
>>44752892

"Still, her terrible nightmares continued increasing in number, to the point in which she decided that she wouldn't sleep anymore. She even contacted some shady Biologis techpriests to get drugs that would keep her awakened."

"I was once with her one time that she spent awake for three days and after she went to sleep she started screaming as if she were possessed by some devil, her nose started to bleed and her eyes were white and shiny...not sleeping only made it worse because she wasn't only tired and stressed but also the moment she went to sleep all the nightmares that she had been avoiding stroke at her at the same time."

"It was only a matter of time...."

They all agreed with this statement. Nobody asked why she wrote your name, maybe she still deeply considered you guilty of all what was happening, maybe she was something that she needed to tell you, perhaps it was just something without any true sense that a blood and sleep deprived mind wrote.
>>
>>44752915

The rest of the day went by as you attended the traditional funeral that they prepared for her. According to their traditions she had to be buried with the same shovel that dug the hole and the first jewel that she found. After being properly cleaned and covered with a silky white towel that surrounded her entire frame she was carefully placed in a hole that her Ogryn Bodyguard had done. The Jewel was a small ruby that was placed on her forehead, on her hands rested the shovel and when it was all ready everybody grabbed a small part of soil and threw it over her, the last person to do so was the Ogryn who had the honour of being the one who completely covered her, all while watering that same soil with his salty tears.

You couldn't do much the rest of the day.

Getting comms is the most important thing, afterwards we should really check out the Deathhands and make sure they're safe to operate with (i suspect that they might not be, seems to good to be true)
>>
>>44752944
>Accompany the group that will search for the last parts of the Radio Beacon.

As you sluggishly wake up you accept the request of aid of the team that wanted you to accompany them to take the last parts for the Radio. The Tank will be the vanguard of the attack that you will lead but you have first to know and tell about your situation down there. Who knows what is happening up there, there is even the possibility of them suffering the same fate that you did, maybe there isn't anymore alive up there and all that roams the corridors and halls of the Space Station are now Possessed ones.

You tried to shrug it off those thoughts and after eating some more stale bread you got all your weapons, ammo and energy reserves ready for action before heading towards the garage where all the vehicles were stored. Once you reached that place you saw that the other members where ready.

"Greetings, team. What vehicle should we take?"

Well that's the difficulty with 40K in general. I honestly like the flexibility of interpretation though. Some people prefer pulpy action-adventure and some like the soul crushing nature of the setting. I see room for both kinds of stories in it.

Though to be honest my absolute favorite sort is so grimdark it becomes comical in the moment, difficult to pull off at the best of times
