As you ride, watching the people outside the foggy bus windows go about their morning, your mind wanders. It has been one month since your long time partner, Joshua Ferris, was killed in a firefight by some two bit pushers. You can’t help but wonder if you’d stayed a good little Club Host like you were programmed to be, never thinking beyond the next client to entertain, the next closet mechaphile to satisfy, might this hollow feeling in your subroutines never have bothered you?

This is only in the states, in northern europe Officers are trained to aim for non-lethal points if firing at civilians who aren't an immediate threat. (if they have close combat weapons for example).

I would suggest .40s with hollow points then. .40 strike a good balance between power and penetration. They have the stopping power to stop a perp in their tracks, but don't have the excess penetration to go through a target and hit anyone behind them. Those are still very lethal rounds though. Stun rounds are by definition designed to impart blunt force trauma to work without so much as breaking the skin, unless you're talking about those taser rounds that have prods. Hollow points are even more ded killy, as they are designed to expand inside the target and cause massive internal flesh wounds. Interestingly, they are used frequently by police forces for their increased stopping power and because they are more likely to remain in the target's body, and not exit the other side and hit someone else/ricochet.

As an American built construct, your parts are highly durable and masculine. They're also inefficient in terms of power consumption. When I said stun rounds I meant the taser ones. But if you combine the .40 hollows with European training it could work.

Alternatively, instead of actual bullets you could use .40 caliber simmuntion. Instead of paint though it could have quick expansion hardening foam. Can't garuntee it won't kill due to the foam capable of crushing bones through flesh and such, but more nonlethal than straight up bullets.

You don't shoot someone in the shoulder expecting them to be nonfatally incapacitated.

You shoot them in the shoulder and there's a moderate chance they'll end up dead. You shoot them ANYWHERE and there's a moderate chance they'll end up dead, or you miss entirely.

At which point considering it's harder to hit someone in the shoulder deliberately, you might as well aim for the centre of mass, because the only time you want to shoot at someone and potentially killing them is to stop them from killing you or someone else, and their life is forfeit.

You fill in the sheet, then pass it to Davis. He reads it over, stamps it, signs it, and then tucks it away in a filing cabinet beneath the counter as he goes through the storage room with a duffel bag. He dumps the whole thing into a chute, which feeds out on your end. Inside, you find a chest radio, a telescoping baton, a small and quite heavy bowling bag, and a set of car keys with an electronic tracking tag. You sling it over your shoulder and head for the garage.

You hit the pager until you find your car. A blue sedan with some unseen modifications for police use. Most people wouldn't know it was a cop car unless they really looked at something like the run-flat tires or the reinforced body.

You hop in and start it up. There's something odd about a machine running a machine. You ponder this as you roll up the ramp and out of the garage. The pick-up location is about three blocks away. As it happens, it's the local library, a four story beast of a long gone age filled with dusty records and out of date computers. You roll up to the sidewalk and step out of the car, looking around for your mark. You spot her at the top of the steps, and wave her over.

Catherine Russo is a proud, well fed and watered woman, with auburn hair and a wandering eye. She dresses somewhat conservatively, in jeans and a polo shirt beneath a faux-leather jacket. Her sneakers speak of long walks, and her luxurious hair pulled into a tail lets you know that she tries not to look like she wants to impress you. She notices you sizing her up, and smiles.

“Hello sir, it’s good to meet you. I’ve heard a lot about you from people around the station. I’m looking forward to working with you.” She extends a hand ending in nails freshly buffed. You shake.

You explain to Russo how these types of cases usually go. She listens attentively. She seems to understand, but you can tell she's getting nervous as you come closer and closer to your destination. You point it out to her and she coughs.

You try to reassure her, but the effect isn't very potent. At any rate, you arrive outside the apartment building just around 8:00. As you turn off the car and step out, Russo comments on the crowd of rubberneckers gathered outside, barely held at bay by the street cops at the perimeter. It's likely they're only letting residents in, and that the lookey loos are trying to pose as them in order to get a peek at the crime scene. The two of you cross the street and flash your badges. You're escorted right to the third floor, where you see another officer standing outside an open door.

Inside the studio, you see a husky man in a dress shirt and tie, as well as white gloves. He is kneeling beside a chalk outline and a dried blood stain. You approach him.

"Morning detective and...detective, I presume. We just got done with the inspection. All clues are tagged, and the body is on its way to the morgue. I can tell you now, it ain't no mystery what killed him. Had his throat ripped out."

"A dog attacked him?" Russo asks.

"More like a wolf. The Shifters, most likely, they operate in this part of town. Eyewitnesses say they saw the victim arguing with one of their known thugs just outside last night. No gunshots heard, so it's pretty safe to say it was a fight that got out of hand. I've a carbon copy of my notes here, all yours."

You go through the apartment carefully, noting the clues marked around the place. There isn't much. A body, blood, and some messy storage space. You do notice something odd though. A bloody stain on the bedsheets, just about the same age as the floor samples. Nothing else about the bed seems odd.

Russo returns and reconfirms the report. Witnesses saw the two arguing, and hid inside. Things got quiet, and the victim wasn't seen for three days, until the landlord came knocking and asking for rent.

You tell one of the officers at the scene to request an analysis of the bedsheet blood. He nods and radios it in.

You and Russo get back in the car and make for the suspects usual haunt. You spy it as you roll down the filthy streets of the slums, a dingy apartment building with boarded and barred windows and an overflowing dumpster. Outside, on the railing of the stoop, sits a large man without a shirt. He has full sleeve tribal tattoos, all signalling his allegiance to the Shifters. When you exit the car, he stands and sets down the bottle of malt liquor he was nursing.

"Mornin' joe, how's it go? Something wrong with your car there, or are you just lookin' to block my view of the street?" The way he walks toward you, it's clear the bottle isn't his first today.

Shifters are a bunch of goons playing gang in the slums. Often they're hired by more professional outfits as muscle. They let their increased physical capability over normal humans go to their heads. Practically, a werewolf is about three times more powerful as a normal person, and even stronger when shifted into their bestial form. Like a normal person, they can get tougher with experience and training, but they don't have the natural capabilities of a half-breed. If you were to go toe-to-toe with one, odds are on you, but if they got a good shot it, you might be waving goodbye to a limb.

If someone attacks any cop, they're allowed to accelerate to lethal force, especially with the crooked lawyers you have on your side. That won't help excuse other codes you might break.

He's a drunk thug, likely hiding something from you. It would take a little less than calling his mother a bitch to get him to punch you, if history has anything to say about it.

The thug laughs to himself as you and Russo get back into the car. You turn around, and see him run into the building as you pull away.

"Sir, I'm not sure we should have left. He might alert the suspect." You explain that breaking a few noses and pulling a punk kicking and screaming out of a building would only get you both in hot water, and the perp let loose the next morning. She nods. "I see. Sorry sir, I shouldn't have questioned you."

The two of you arrive at the precinct and head straight for the clerk's desk. She gets you an arrest within 45 minutes, which isn't totally unreasonable. With it, you are permitted to do anything short of cold-blooded murder to bring in your mark.

An officer approaches you as you exit the building.

"Detective, the lab turned over the tests. The blood on the bed was a match to the victim's. We did find traces of saliva, but without a comparison the test could take days." You thank him and send him on his way.

In less than an hour, you're back at the dingy building. This time there's nobody outside.

You enter the back door. The building inside is filthy, covered in food wrappers and random garbage.The walls are covered in graffiti made with markers and paint, all spelling curse words or made to look like crude scenes of depravity. As you move around the ground floor, you spy a staircase. You approach, and hear voices coming from above. As far as you can tell, they're discussing payment for something, but the conversation ends before you can gather what it is, and the participants suddenly fall quiet.

"He's here. I'll take my leave." This is followed by footsteps, and then nothing. You wait a little while longer, and hear a crash of breaking glass. Outside a window, you see a man hit the ground, and run into the street.

You run to the front door and kick it open. Russo is already out of the car, shouting at the runner to freeze. He doesn't respond, and she opens fire. You watch as her gun nearly jumps out of her hands three times in a row. You shout for her to get an ID, and after being stunned with surprise for a moment, she gets in the car and starts rolling.

You head back up the stairs to find the room where you suspect the conversation had just taken place. As you enter, you feel something impact with your head, sending you reeling. When you right yourself, three Shifter thugs are standing around the corner from the door, holding a pipe, and two machine pistols respectively.
