In a city steeped in history and blood, a single police detective works to fight back the constant and unyielding tide of crime and injustice. With gun in hand, he fights an endless war against the dark intentions of his fellow man, both mortal and immortal. Your goal, not to save this world of ever wrestling morality, but to bring justice to the victims, and save one life at a time. If you can make it another day, and if you can solve another case, you can sleep knowing you cleaned up one spot of filth, no matter how small.

The quest will begin when you have chosen your form.

Votes will decide most choices, and most choices will consist of some multiple choice and a write in option.

Human: The natural occupants of this world, and the most numerous. You will be afforded greater opportunity and financial advantage due to your perceived weakness when compared to the types of criminals you will be asked to take on. Humans have little supernatural affinity, but in rare cases have been known to perform feats that put them on par with more dangerous forms of life.

Construct: Once made from clay, stone, or wood, modern homunculi are usually wrought from steel. While nearly all of them are subservient machines, a small percentage achieve self-awareness, and are permitted civil rights by the government. You will be seen as a second class citizen, but your nearly indestructible body will make the pain easier to bare.

Dhampir: The result of a cross-breeding of human and a creature of the night. Feature a nearly human appearance, and the ability to subsist on blood as well as charm others. If you are discovered, many will ostracize you, but many will also praise your bravery.

Skeleton: Ancient beings created by magic long forgotten. Feared by some, skeletons are nonetheless brilliant sources of ancient knowledge and wisdom. Sadly, many mortal pleasure are lost to them.

Half-Breed: An unholy union of a demon or devil and a mortal. Though physically capable to the point of absurdity, they often have a hard time battling their baser instincts. Many have risen to prominence, but almost none have done so without violence.

The sun manages to send a few errant trickles of light down through the smog and brick terrain of the city, reaching your single window. You turn to watch the dust motes dance in the rays before reaching back and disconnecting the charging cable from your neck, setting it down in the cradle beside your power station. It’s 6:30, and time to get ready for work. Unlike most of your kind, you have managed to work your way up the ranks thanks to a radical software bug, allowing you to perform the highly revered actions of deductive, inductive, and abductive reasoning. Not something a human would write home about, but an extremely rare ability for a Construct, and a great way to earn yourself a shiny green card from the state, indicating your sentience and right to live as a “resident” of the country.

After pulling on some shoes, jeans, and even a vest just for shits and giggles, you pull over a t-shirt from your favorite synth-noise group, “Serial No. 90210”. Before leaving your studio apartment, with a grand total of four pieces of furniture including your power station, you grab your bus pass. Hooray for the anti-construct property laws.

As you ride, watching the people outside the foggy bus windows go about their morning, your mind wanders. It has been one month since your long time partner, Joshua Ferris, was killed in a firefight by some two bit pushers. You can’t help but wonder if you’d stayed a good little Club Host like you were programmed to be, never thinking beyond the next client to entertain, the next closet mechaphile to satisfy, might this hollow feeling in your subroutines never have bothered you?

You take the direct line to Evergreen, two blocks up from your neighborhood of Blue March, or as the locals call it, Lowtown. Evergreen is considered middle class by most residents, made up of primarily homes, schools, and shopping centers. The people here are a bit more judgmental of your appearance, but they're as good natured as any schmuck in Lowtown. Just around the corner from the precinct, you stop at Duncan's Donuts, a small shop that makes what many believe to be the best bearclaws in the county. Not that you've ever tasted one.

When you enter the precinct, you are greeted by the desk attendant. Sally Sutherland. She wears her uniform well, and smiles at just about everyone who walks through these revolving doors.

"Good morning, Detective. The Chief wanted to see you, and there's a message for you on your desk phone."

You set the donuts down on the desk and tell her to have at them. She comments on her diet forbidding such sugary foods, but takes an eclair with her coffee anyway. You shrug and head upstairs to see the chief.

As usual, Chief O'Brian's desk is cluttered and her phone is constantly blaring with a call incoming light. She sits in her high backed chair, smoking a cigarette as she flips through a file folder. When she sees you enter, she taps some of the ash from her smoke and speaks up.

"It's about damn time, you hunk of scrap. You're fifteen minutes late."

You can fill out a form for more equipment with the armory officer, but taking out more than you need will get you written up if the higher ups notice. The standard issue piece is a normal 10mm with the ability to load in special ammunition, and is intended mostly as a means to stop runners from getting away.

They're custom made by a swiss armory for police in countries affiliated with Dimensional Peace Union. The velocity is low enough that they rarely kill, but you're still advised by protocol to try to use nonlethal methods. That is to say, you can request a stun gun, but in this town having to pull your gun usually means needing to pull your gun. So long as you don't use excessive force, the city can almost always get you off with a slap on the wrist for tagging a perp in the leg or shoulder.

thats not how firearms work though mate. Even a .22, one of the smallest calibers, can kill a person if it hits in just the right place. And officers will never aim for legs. Officers are trained to aim for cenetr of bodymass, because if your shooting someone, its to kill, because they are a lethal threat to you and one point.

I would suggest .40s with hollow points then. .40 strike a good balance between power and penetration. They have the stopping power to stop a perp in their tracks, but don't have the excess penetration to go through a target and hit anyone behind them. The hollow points allow the round to shatter causing additional damage, but also take away any excess penetration too, though controversial on human targets and banned in warfare

Thing is, we're likely going to be shooting nonhumans too.

Speaking of which, how durable are we? As a construct needing electricity, we can probably survive limbs blown off, but do we have a central power supply that will kill us if it goes dead, a processor or magic brain thing?

Taser is also good for other reasons other than taking people down nonlethally.

Those are still very lethal rounds though. Stun rounds are by definition designed to impart blunt force trauma to work without so much as breaking the skin, unless you're talking about those taser rounds that have prods. Hollow points are even more ded killy, as they are designed to expand inside the target and cause massive internal flesh wounds. Interestingly, they are used frequently by police forces for their increased stopping power and because they are more likely to remain in the target's body, and not exit the other side and hit someone else/ricochet.

>>
>>44718283
As an American built construct, your parts are highly durable and masculine. They're also inefficient in terms of power consumption. Like most models, your memory and cognative functions are stored in the head, where they're the hardest to hit and the best armored. Your chest contains the majority of your parts, and if damaged too heavily you'll be forced into low power to preserve your memories. That said, you can be repaired with new parts and even upgraded, but the cost is so steep you'd need a loan to even begin.

Hands and feet? Enjoy missing because the natural bodily responses to danger make shooting in a real world situation a lot less precise than when you're punching holes in paper. And then that round goes ripping down the street, goes through some thin plaster wall, and kills kindly old Grandma Jenkins.

When I said stun rounds I meant the taser ones. But if you combine the .40 hollows with European training it could work.

Alternatively, instead of actual bullets you could use .40 caliber simmuntion. Instead of paint though it could have quick expansion hardening foam. Can't garuntee it won't kill due to the foam capable of crushing bones through flesh and such, but more nonlethal than straight up bullets.

I don't think you get it.
You don't shoot someone in the shoulder expecting them to be nonfatally incapacitated.

You shoot them in the shoulder and there's a moderate chance they'll end up dead. You shoot them ANYWHERE and there's a moderate chance they'll end up dead, or you miss entirely.

At which point considering it's harder to hit someone in the shoulder deliberately, you might as well aim for the centre of mass, because the only time you want to shoot at someone and potentially killing them is to stop them from killing you or someone else, and their life is forfeit.

If they survive, they're lucky, but if you shoot someone with bullets you don't do so expecting to "just wound them". You treat every shot like a killshot.

It's not about always. It's about it happening a not insignificant percentage of the time.
People DO survive gunshot wounds, yes.
People also die from catching one in the shoulder. Happens all the god damn time in combat zones.
There is no such thing as "shooting to wound" except in delusional feel good fantasies.
Literally any part of the human body that one can reliably hit without sending rounds just zipping freely down the street because they tried some lone ranger bullshit about shooting at the object they were holding has the potential to kill the person being shot. If you shoot someone, it's an application of deadly force, no matter where on their body you aim.
It's why cops carry tasers and sticks.

You fill in the sheet, then pass it to Davis. He reads it over, stamps it, signs it, and then tucks it away in a filing cabinet beneath the counter as he goes through the storage room with a duffel bag. He dumps the whole thing into a chute, which feeds out on your end. Inside, you find a chest radio, a telescoping baton, a small and quite heavy bowling bag, and a set of car keys with an electronic tracking tag. You sling it over your shoulder and head for the garage.

You hit the pager until you find your car. A blue sedan with some unseen modifications for police use. Most people wouldn't know it was a cop car unless they really looked at something like the run-flat tires or the reinforced body.

You hop in and start it up. There's something odd about a machine running a machine. You ponder this as you roll up the ramp and out of the garage. The pick-up location is about three blocks away. As it happens, it's the local library, a four story beast of a long gone age filled with dusty records and out of date computers. You roll up to the sidewalk and step out of the car, looking around for your mark. You spot her at the top of the steps, and wave her over.

Catherine Russo is a proud, well fed and watered woman, with auburn hair and a wandering eye. She dresses somewhat conservatively, in jeans and a polo shirt beneath a faux-leather jacket. Her sneakers speak of long walks, and her luxurious hair pulled into a tail lets you know that she tries not to look like she wants to impress you. She notices you sizing her up, and smiles.

“Hello sir, it’s good to meet you. I’ve heard a lot about you from people around the station. I’m looking forward to working with you.” She extends a hand ending in nails freshly buffed. You shake.

>"Let's get this show on the road, we're burning daylight."

You try to reassure her, but the effect isn't very potent. At any rate, you arrive outside the apartment building just around 8:00. As you turn off the car and step out, Russo comments on the crowd of rubberneckers gathered outside, barely held at bay by the street cops at the perimeter. It's likely they're only letting residents in, and that the lookey loos are trying to pose as them in order to get a peek at the crime scene. The two of you cross the street and flash your badges. You're escorted right to the third floor, where you see another officer standing outside an open door.

Inside the studio, you see a husky man in a dress shirt and tie, as well as white gloves. He is kneeling beside a chalk outline and a dried blood stain. You approach him.

"Morning detective and...detective, I presume. We just got done with the inspection. All clues are tagged, and the body is on its way to the morgue. I can tell you now, it ain't no mystery what killed him. Had his throat ripped out."

"A dog attacked him?" Russo asks.

"More like a wolf. The Shifters, most likely, they operate in this part of town. Eyewitnesses say they saw the victim arguing with one of their known thugs just outside last night. No gunshots heard, so it's pretty safe to say it was a fight that got out of hand. I've a carbon copy of my notes here, all yours."

"Nothing too strange. Shifters usually go for the throat when they brawl. Usually it makes 'em hard to track, since they don't have accurate dental records, but this time someone saw his face. If I had to say anything was odd, it'd be that the guy robbed him right after. That is, turned his drawers and shelves out. Can't be sure if anything was taken, but there's no loose money or anything like that laying around, so it's safe to assume." You thank the coroner and dismiss him, then order Russo to speak to the witnesses again, for safety's sake.

You go through the apartment carefully, noting the clues marked around the place. There isn't much. A body, blood, and some messy storage space. You do notice something odd though. A bloody stain on the bedsheets, just about the same age as the floor samples. Nothing else about the bed seems odd.

Russo returns and reconfirms the report. Witnesses saw the two arguing, and hid inside. Things got quiet, and the victim wasn't seen for three days, until the landlord came knocking and asking for rent.

You tell one of the officers at the scene to request an analysis of the bedsheet blood. He nods and radios it in.

You and Russo get back in the car and make for the suspects usual haunt. You spy it as you roll down the filthy streets of the slums, a dingy apartment building with boarded and barred windows and an overflowing dumpster. Outside, on the railing of the stoop, sits a large man without a shirt. He has full sleeve tribal tattoos, all signalling his allegiance to the Shifters. When you exit the car, he stands and sets down the bottle of malt liquor he was nursing.

"Mornin' joe, how's it go? Something wrong with your car there, or are you just lookin' to block my view of the street?" The way he walks toward you, it's clear the bottle isn't his first today.

What is the legality of entering a building without a warrant if a resident has attacked you (a cop)
How easy/legal would it be to to verbally goad this guy to violence.
>>
>>44720655

Time for a little rough stuff

A drunk lookout isn't stopping us.

Give him a punch to the head. Try not to kill him.

We have no grounds for a warrant. And were not leaving. So....

*bamp* time.
>>
>>44720655
Shifters are a bunch of goons playing gang in the slums. Often they're hired by more professional outfits as muscle. They let their increased physical capability over normal humans go to their heads. Practically, a werewolf is about three times more powerful as a normal person, and even stronger when shifted into their bestial form. Like a normal person, they can get tougher with experience and training, but they don't have the natural capabilities of a half-breed. If you were to go toe-to-toe with one, odds are on you, but if they got a good shot it, you might be waving goodbye to a limb.

If someone attacks any cop, they're allowed to accelerate to lethal force, especially with the crooked lawyers you have on your side. That won't help excuse other codes you might break.

He's a drunk thug, likely hiding something from you. It would take a little less than calling his mother a bitch to get him to punch you, if history has anything to say about it.

The thug laughs to himself as you and Russo get back into the car. You turn around, and see him run into the building as you pull away.

"Sir, I'm not sure we should have left. He might alert the suspect." You explain that breaking a few noses and pulling a punk kicking and screaming out of a building would only get you both in hot water, and the perp let loose the next morning. She nods. "I see. Sorry sir, I shouldn't have questioned you."

The two of you arrive at the precinct and head straight for the clerk's desk. She gets you an arrest within 45 minutes, which isn't totally unreasonable. With it, you are permitted to do anything short of cold-blooded murder to bring in your mark.

An officer approaches you as you exit the building.

"Detective, the lab turned over the tests. The blood on the bed was a match to the victim's. We did find traces of saliva, but without a comparison the test could take days." You thank him and send him on his way.

In less than an hour, you're back at the dingy building. This time there's nobody outside.

As far as you can tell, they're discussing payment for something, but the conversation ends before you can gather what it is, and the participants suddenly fall quiet.
