In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium there is only war. Imperium of Man, once strong and proud, now is slowly crumbling, whole regions of space are lost to the horrors that lurk in the darkness of the void. Sector Deus is just one of the thousands of Imperial provinces that form the front line in the war to defend Humanity itself. Corruption from within and aggression from without threaten it. But the Emperor sends us hope. High Lords of Terra commissioned a Chapter of Adeptus Astartes, finest warriors Humanity has ever seen, to defend this region of space. They are the last line of defence that hold Age of Ruin at bay. They are the Ghosts of Retribution and this is their tale.

+Briefing+
Centuries ago, Belisarian Dynasty ruled Sector Deus. It was a time of peace and prosperity. However nothing good can last in this universe. Internal strife erupted, civil war and assassination ended once great Dynasty and plunged whole Sector into a dark period known as the Thirteen Rebellions. Eventually a dictatorial general stepped in to bring order and Ursus Dynasty appeared on top, controlling the seat of Capitolis Sectorum. Today, two centuries later, Chapter of the Ghosts of Retribution, have tracked down two young people whom they believe to be the rightful heirs of the Belisarian dynasty. Unfortunately, just as they arrived to the planet of Solstreim, siblings were kidnapped and departed the planet onboard Lacrimosa Serenima, tradeship bound for Tachion Primaris, the seat of Ursus family...

Hey Skargan! Nice to see you again bro.

Pretty excited for this thread. Been waiting weeks.

First roll in game. Let's see how long it takes

Glorious Suggestion pt1/2

Forces Available:

Revenants;

Sword-class frigate Strongback;

Crew of Strongback

1.Get Revenants back to Frigate ASAP

Goal: (Little Time loss)

2. Have Strongback fly alongside the Trader and wait for a quiet time-slot prior to departure if possible

Goal: (Want to create as little disturbance as possible)

2a Have crewmembers of Strongback intended for boarding on a slight sleep deprived schedule, so they appear weary.

Goal: (Make it look, like this is an ongoing operation)

3. Message Trader

"This is the Frigate Strongback from the Ghosts of Retribution, to the Heavy Trader Lacrimosa Serenima. Due to recent pirate activiy within the sector, we need to conduct a search of your vessel, and interrogate some officers and crewmen. We apologize for any disturbance this may cause. Please stop your engines and allow personnal to come aboard your ship."

Goal: (Get Access to ship)

3:1 They to not comply Message: "Warning, if you do not comply, we will be forced to stop you and have you registered as a renegade ship under suspicion of aiding pirate activity within sector Deus."

3.1.1 Still no comply. Fire warning shots.[Manually go from here as scenario becomes increasingly unlikely]
>>
>>44712816

Glorious plan 2/3

4. Board the ship and conduct search, using Strongback-crew. They are to inspect the cargo hold, check the actual cargo with freightlists and question some officers and crew using standard-questions for a search.(Rank/Position/time enlisted/noticed suspicious activity) More gentle with officers. Trusted crewmembers should be instructed to also be on the lookout for the children, but make this appear as one of several things to search for). Continue search until found. If lucky, they are listed as "cargo".

The best way to sneak them out, is to disguise them as chapter serfs and have them look at clipboards with a spreadsheet, so their faces remain relativly hidden and they just appear busy.

Goal: (Find the children; Make distraction appear more plausible)

4a. Use a senior officer of Strongback to talk with the commanding officer of the trader. Apart from smalltalk, he should drop hints that this is part to prevent a unsettling tradewar between Forgeworld Mandel and the Merchant League, who accuse each other of sabotage, and the situation continues to escalate. Make it seem to be important for the wellbeing of the ship and the organisation the ship is listed with. Furthermore advise him, that discretion about the wider operation is good, as this is a try to stop subsector dominus from shooting at itself. Furthermore, tell him, that due to the delicate nature as well as unfounded accusations of relations between naval assets and involved parties, a more neutral party (GoR) is part of the search.

Goal: (a captain wants more concrete reasons for the search, also make him trust us more)

secondary Goal: (Get his opinion on the trade war)

ADDITION
Once we have the children, use their DNA samples to create two flashcloned husks (like they do to make servitors). If questioned about the heirs disappearing while we conducted our investigation, riddle the husks with bolter fire and present them as evidence that they were two 'stowaways' found aboard our ship following the inspection, who tried to resist.

So this is the situation.
>Red-white
Is where the Lacrimosa Serenima is headed, to deliver the Heirs for termination

>yellow
where our forces are, and what distance they would have to make to catch them.

EXCEPT for the Strongback and it's crew which is at Solstreim at this moment.
>>
>>44712457
In any case, get a heavily encrypted soulword to Eliam Belisarius on Templos, something in the likes of:

>These ghosts have found living whispers of your long bygone past. Whispers in danger of being silenced shortly.

After we confirm his identity, we can pass along the name of the ship they're on, so that if we fail to intercept it, at the very least he can still try to intercede. Also gives us some degree of plausible deniability when he acts in force, we can claim he was calling in a favour we owed in and he instructed us to halt that particular ship.
>>
>>44712876
I assume the trader has not yet left the Solstreim system, and we can radio them, since we are in the same system
>>
>>44712911
Templos is at a good distance to attempt interception too, and the warproute passes right by Nestorium, should all else fail. Though I doubt they'll be jumping on the idea of interfering that much in sector nobility business.

Welcome, brother, if that's your first roll, I'll take it over Dieter's. It will take 5 days for the soulword to reach Chapter Master.

Meanwhile, please roll d3, it will determine how quickly "Lacrimosa Serenima" is travelling to Tachion Primaris:
1. In a hurry, few long jumps (10+d10 days)
2. Usual, medium jumps (20+d20 days, single planetary visit)
3. Slow, a lot of very short, safe jumps (40 + d30 days, multiple planetary visits along the way)

Then roll accordingly how many days will it take for them to reach Tachion Primaris.

Can the Strongback determine the direction of the Lacrimosa, or is it too far gone?
>>
>>44713584
Nestorium is a likely bet, with it being right in the middle of their route and having a lot of tradeable commodities. Firstly, send a safe soulword to Regon that the ship by name of Lacrimosa Serenima could stop by their planet, and that it should be halted immediately when it does so, and not be allowed to disembark or leave until we arrive to check the ship in person, without overly alarming them, making it seem like a routine security measure without mentioning our chapter's name. Give as a reason that they likely have goods onboard that do not belong to them, and that we'll give a more profound reason after we've searched the ship.

Yes, great. Their journey will take over a month, your autocogitators estimate a total of 36 days. In the meantime they are likely to make a stop somewhere. Potential stops:
Draloa [5%]
Karn Dereg [5%]
Templos [5%]
Inaria [5%]
Nestorium [30%]
Sarris V [25%]
Prothera [20%]
Unpredictable, unforeseen outcome [5%]
+++
What are your orders? If you will order Strongback to track Lacrimosa Serenima, Geron will need to do one of the two following options:
>Tail Lacrimosa's traces of warp travel (roll Navigation [-10])
>Anticipate and jump to one of the planets where Lacrimosa should stop [tell me what planet you jump to, I'll then roll]

>Templos [5%]
This is where Eliam Blisar, who would also want to find the heirs, lives. If we are really desperate we can ask him to friendlyly detain the ship (Flood them with bueraucratic paperwork)

>Inaria [5%]
Our firend Glabius Zarikoff is there, we can rely on him.

Bad news. They are very strict.
>Prothera [20%]

no one is there

Skargan, how good are our chances for navigation?

Geron has intelligence 45, divided by two (no Navigation skill) that's 23, -10 (for not having Space Navigation experience), +0 (for a slow merchant ship) = 13% chance of success.

Let's stick to the alibi of piratehunt, it's too dangerous to openly talk about it.
>Send a message to Prothera, saying we need a ship to be detained for investigation against pirates
remind them of Arron Settel's attack we thwarted a few years ago.
>send a message to templos
Give the ships name, estimated time of arrival, and "thats all we ask" I hope Eliam bites, and this will be enough

They should be well aware that Lacrimosa Serenima are needed for QUESTIONING about piracy. ie they may have interacted with the pirates, they may have common employer etc.
They are not definitive pirates themselves. Everyone should know that before drunken Inarians or zealous cogbrains go blasting them out of the sky for no good reason.

You receive an urgent soulword from Regon:
>My ally, the situation became a lot more complicated than we imagined. We have detained the ship, however one of the nobles aboard brandished Lord Ursus' personal Seal of Authority. He is demanding for the ship to be released and there's nothing we can legally do. We can detain them for another few days pretending that we are checking the credibility of the Seal, but that will only buy enough time to receive a reply from you. If we will use force against a ship protected by the Seal of Authority, it would be the same as if we would slap Larion Ursus himself on the face. And you know about our situation with the proceedings on Mars... If these people are truly pirates and you are 99.5% certain that their detainment will not hurt Nestorium, we will trust you and proceed to force them to surrender. We will do as you ask, but you must understand the consequences of this. What's your response?
>>
>>44715874
Don't tell Nestorium to use force.
Head to Tachion primaris, head them off in outskirts of that system.
Would've been worst thing to do initially but now it's the only option left.

Ain't it always.

>No, honored friend. Though we believe them to be carrying the belisarian heirs, we cannot ask you to detain the vessel

Unfortunately it would most likely be mistaken for a deception - anyone can claim that they've received soulword from someone, proving it is a lot harder. Also, technically Seal of Authority has very unclear relationship to you as vassals of the Sector Lord. It's your word against theirs.
>>44715957
You could try to hunt it down in the warp as well, but that's VERY dangerous to everyone involved.

Another option would be for Regon to try to order Skitarii to extract the heirs in secret... But that has lower chance of success than direct assault.

Someone pick your final actions and roll d =100

Screw it. I see no peaceful solution, no win-win situation, no road to victory.

Might as well

So any other forces/allies we can call upon or move in case things go tits up?

The favor we have from the high lords useful here?

Go to the Black Templar ship and ask for advice

Aslo send an explanation to Astrobelus Kest
Message should include
-Why Ursus let that Prison planet fall and made no attempt to get it back
-Why there is no support for loyal imp elements in Styrua
-Why no attack on styria has happened so far.

>>44717368
kest has no reaon to believe us or support us, and he'll probably use it to sieze more power for the ecclesiarchy.
So no, don't tell Kest shit.
>>
>>44717368
That might bea bit too much. First things first

Well, as there's no consensus at this point and discussion is still raging in the chat, maybe someone wants to make a secret d100 roll? It's completely optional.

It seems we are left without many options.
Confronting them in the sector capital's system seems complete suicide, the navy will glass us if we try to intercept them there. Intercepting them in warp seems as much of a deadly gamble.
Firstly, let's contact Nestorium. Play our hand with Regon, tell him everything we know and if he considers it not excessively risky to intervene. If the Lacrimosa is docked in Nestorium, it's likely they're there for a refuel and to pick up passengers and goods. The best option would be to hinder their flight for a few more weeks. Wrong fuel source, problems with the engine hydraulics, illegal cargo 'accidentally' loaded onto the ship, those things we can use. Ask Regon if it is manageable to pull this off, a seal from Ursus be damned, if they're found sneaking a STC outside of Nestorium or the like, they can pull their priviliege of independence and still detain it, Nestorium is beholden only to Mars in matters that concern them.
Regardless, we head there with our fastest ship immediately, and try to make as much speed as possible. If Regon fails to detain them, it'll be confronting them in the warp or nothing.

This is a more reasonable version of Hi_hi_hi's I am on it.

>>44718097
That's very interesting and GOOD for you. You don't know anything about it yet, though.

So, what are your next actions?

I am saying Venat's idea is the least suicidal. Anyone else for or against?

>>44718350

We could go with contacting Regon, and ask if it's plausible, and getting our fleet to move to Nestorium. We can resolve the rest next session?

By popular vote it was decided in the chat to end the session with a cliffhanger.

Also I have an announcement to make - as many of you have been contributing a lot to our wiki over the past few months of downtime and we have done a lot of minor, but really interesting things, it's LOOT time!

I want to make this interesting, so I'll give you a choice:

1. High Lords of Terra are sending you reinforcements a full brand new Company of 100 battle brothers will arrive from Luna, ready to wage war, you will only need to provide them with equipment.
2. One of the High Lords of Terra sees your struggles and sends out Callidus assassin to kill a single person/being in Sector Deus. Will it succeed? Who knows, but there's a very high chance of that thing dying a horrible death* [subject to terms and conditions]
3. High Lords of Terra are pleased with your performance. Gain 1 Favour.
4. Chapter Master learns new things, he gains +3 xp
5. Chapter Master turns attention to his soul and makes decisions that will influence his future - you can choose to either gain 10 Corruption or 10 Purity or reset everything to 0.

So, I think you deserve to pick 1 of these as a team and I'll also allow +1 additional because of the efforts by Luigi, Dieter, Tripmarine, igor94(is it Ions nickname?) and others to contribute to the wiki!

So think very well what you want and decide.

next session... Next monday? I'll see whether I could possibly do something earlier, but no promises

>>44719048
100 new men would be our best bet.
