Last time, on Star Dust Quest...

With Ley'ra's shiny new armour, you continued on your trek down floor AA, only to come across more of those stalker mutants. Things got a little hairy (with egg puns, courtesy of Sya'ra), but you managed to find the nest and remove a sizable portion of the stalker population. It seems like they tried to hit you with everything you got, even their supposed 'stalker mothers' who could spew acid.

Fortunately, Comet came to the rescue with a strange force-shield of sorts. Unfortunately, it seems Connell noticed the strange suit hiding under her cloaks.

“I can stand,” Comet mutters, groggily shaking her head while placing a hand on your shoulder to stand up.

“Are you sure?” Beth asks while holding her arm to help her stand. She looks over to Connell, who's resumed burning away the biomass. “I'm sure we can take it easy now... right?”

“I wouldn't count on that,” he answers, his body still focused forwards while his flamethrower does all the work. Ivan, Ley'ra, and Sya'ra are still standing nearby with their weapons ready. “I think we took care of most of them, but there's always stragglers. Always.”

“Fair enough,” you say, now standing beside Comet. She looks like she's recovered fine enough to walk. “Should we head back?”

“Soon,” Connell responds, walking slowly as he moves to burn more biomass. Several large eggs make a sickening squelching sound before exploding from the intense heat. “I'm almost done here, but we have to make sure the fire goes out safely before leaving. Last thing we want is to burn down Unfound.”

“Sounds like a good idea,” you comment, turning to Comet. “Why don't you sit while we wait? I think we can take care of any stragglers, and you look like you need the rest.”

“Okay,” she responds, nodding to Beth who helps her to the ground.

You shoulder your shotgun while scanning the room with your eyes for the next while, remaining vigilant while Comet rests near you. There doesn't appear to be any more of the low humming noise nor the scratching-inside-the-walls, indicating that you may have actually eradicated all the stalkers. However, you can hear the faint sounds of gunshots coming from below, dampened enough to indicate that the next floor down is quite far. You wonder just how far apart these floors are.

Twenty minutes later, Connell has finally burned away all the biomass and the fire has all died down. The room is practically covered in as and the air is smoky, but a lot of it seems to be funneling up somewhere.
>>
>>44693154
“Vents,” he explains, patting his flamethrower nozzle before fastening it to his side. “This facility has a sort of chimney system through all the floors. I suspect it was some sort of fire countermeasure to prevent smoke from choking everyone to death.”

“Neat,” you say, checking your shotgun while you prepare to go on the trek back to the floor elevator. “How's it going on the assault?”

“They're having fun, of course,” he chuckles, presumably listening in on the comms of his comrades. “Stay alert. Many fall victim to letting their guard down after a victory.”

“Blech, I just hope we killed them all,” Sya'ra comments, shaking her shoulders. “Almost getting face-fucked is going to be one of my worst memories. P-T-S-D for the next few weeks, I'm sure of it.”

“You say that every time,” Ley'ra pipes up.

“Hey, I've never fought a mutant before. Cut me some slack.”

“I agree,” Ivan calls out from the side. “I only wish to remove more of these hellbeasts.”

Connell laughs heartily. “Well, lucky for you guys, once we clear up these next few floors, the Unfound facility will be open for exploration once again.”

You turn to him. “What do you mean?”

“You're free to come back down into this facility to explore some floors, if you'd wish. We just ask that you detail us on any floor maps you find or any other interesting findings you come across, especially if they're related to the history of this facility.”

“Sweet, we'll keep that in mind,” you say, eyebrows raised.

“Hah, does that make us Dustkeepers, then?” Ivan laughs.

“Hmm.” Connell taps his chin. “I don't see why not. You're the type of person to fit around here anyways. Even if not, you're definitely a friend of ours.”

A girlish squeal startles you. Looking to your side, you're somewhat unsurprised to see Ivan dancing giddily.

“I have become Dustkeeper! Take that, Bolshtik!” he says, fist pumping into the air.
>>
>>44693175
“Who's Bolshtik?” Beth mutters.

“Anyways, I've sent out a message to my secretary to let you know your contract has been fulfilled,” Connell says, walking towards the exit of the smoldering room. “Also, if you decide to delve down into one of the floors to explore later on, just come to me and I'll sign you in.”

“There's a sign in process?” you ask, quirking an eyebrow.

“Of course. We need to know who's down there at all times.”

“Makes sense.”

>Sya'ra takes point. She's done an ample job of it so far, so there's no reason to switch it up.

>Take point yourself. Sure, your memory's been scarred even worse than Sya'ra's after almost being ripped apart by four stalkers, but you want to prove you're the leader of this troop.

>>44693192
“Ivan,” you call, the masked man looking to you through his circular one-way eye holes. “Want to take point? You seem like you've got some spunk in you.”

“Ah! You want Ivan to take point,” he says excitedly. “Of course, I'll do it! Ivan has no fear of these beasts from hell.”

“You remind me of a lot of Dustkeepers I know,” Connell comments.

“It is what I have been striving for, comrade,” he says, walking to the front of the group with his shotgun at the ready.

Ivan's approval: +1

Shaking your head in silent laughter, you walk up to stand behind him in the line. When a smaller gloved hand pats you on your shoulder, you look back to see Sya'ra.

“Tired of me already?” she says with a small mock frown.

“If I was, I don't think this helps,” you answer.

“Fine then.” She peeps over your shoulder. “Uh, you should go. Ivan took off.”

You look to the front to see him already walking. “Dammit, Ivan.”

“Sorry comrade, I am having the time of my life,” he says with a chuckle, slowing down to let you catch up.

“Eh, I don't really blame you.”
>>
>>44693714
He leads your group through the small hallway and around the first corner which had taken you into this room. Ivan stops after you come across the dreaded hole-filled hallway. The thin air is filled with silence, garnished by the occasional rumble from an explosion that happens below. They appear to be really duking it out down there. However, a familiar low, distant hum is reverberating through your body.

You feel a tap on your shoulder, causing you to look back to Sya'ra. She points her head backwards to Connell behind her, and he simply nods his head. There's stalkers about.

You look forward, seeing the hallway with the mangled corpses of the stalkers you had taken care of while making your way through here. Ivan peeps over his shoulder as if to ask what to do.

The first hole, the large one in the ceiling, is only a few meters ahead of your group.

>Continue forward cautiously, but don't linger on the holes. There shouldn't be any serious threats.

Letting out a moderately loud sigh, you pat your hand on Ivan's shoulder to let him know you're walking past him. When he sees your face, he gives you a cheeky salute, causing you to laugh.

You walk up to the hole in the ceiling, your shotgun pointed upwards. Glancing back, you see your team ready to fire upon anything that jumps down at you. However, Comet appears to be resting beside Beth instead, her Herald gun pointed down. You don't really blame her if she doesn't have the strength to aim.

Hell, you're already an expert at this. Not giving it any more thought, you step forward to directly under the hole, your finger itching on the trigger of your shotgun. A second passes by, and nothing jumps out to eat your face. Vigilantly, you wait another few seconds, but nothing meets your senses except for the distant, low hum.

Another few seconds tick by, and you realize that you're kind of frozen in place. Your heart is racing, but despite your cowardly appearance, you're just too afraid to move.

“Ahem,” Connell calls out from behind. “Uh, it's clear, Gavin.”

“Oh, right,” you almost squeak out. “Let's uh, go, then?”

“You stared into the upwards abyss, comrade,” Ivan comments, passing you by nonchalantly. “You are a strong man.”

“Mm, yes, strong indeed,” Sya'ra giggles, coming up to you.

“Shut up,” you mutter, turning around to follow Ivan.

Ivan leads you down the hall until coming up to the next hole, which is on the left.

“I will take care of this one,” Ivan loudly whispers, looking back to you while making an 'okay' sign with his fingers.

>Let him take care of it.
>Just walk past the hole, these stalkers aren't as dangerous as they were made out to be.

>>
>>44694065
You simply nod your head and let him continue.

Unlike you and Sya'ra however, he steps right in front of the hole immediately, his shotgun pointed towards it. That's when you see the two elongated limbs of a stalker extend forward to grab Ivan. However, before it could grab him, Ivan lets out a laugh.

“Gahahah!” He fires a burst of two shells at the stalker from his shotgun. “Die!” Another shot. “Die!”

The claws fail to reach him, but after the third shot, one of the claws manages to latch itself right into the side of the gun, preventing Ivan from firing further. To your horror, the limbs continue to move, albeit at a weaker fervor.

You almost elect to fire your own shotgun, but stop when Ivan pulls out his knife and immediately slices off the arm from the elbow and up. He grabs the mutilated limb and thrusts it back at the stalker in the hole, claw first.

“Grrah! Die, hell beast!” Violently, he jabs it into the hole several times, the stalker finally letting out painful shrieks. You've never heard the shriek of an ungodly mutant getting its eyes gouged out before.

The other arm of the stalker falls limp to the floor and the shrieks stop. His chest heaving, Ivan turns back to your team and throws his mutilated stalker limb into the air, waving.

“Comrades! I have taken care of the hole, we can continue!” he exclaims.

It takes several blinks to realize that your mouth is gaped open, the rest of your team notably silent. A whistle from Connell alerts you that they've been paying attention.

“That reminds me of my childhood,” he says.

“I don't think I'd like to hear about your childhood,” you comment, shaking yourself off before walking forward. To your dismay, Ivan fastens the claw against his right leg before shouldering his shotgun again.

“Hear that?” Connell says, looking around himself. “No more humming. I think we're in the clear.”

“Neat.”
>>
>>44694520
“Alright, next hole!” Ivan says, leading your still-shocked group to the next hole. Or, rather, holes. Ivan stops right before the next two holes, which are across from each other on each side of the wall. You remember this one.

>Let Ivan investigate one while you take the other.
>Investigate one with Sya'ra on the other hole... you're afraid of what Ivan will do and you don't really want to be close to him.

“Ivan,” you whisper, tapping him on the shoulder. He looks back to you. “Take the left, I've got the right.”

“Alright, comrade.” He immediately reaches for his amputated stalker claw, but you grab his harm before he grabs it, giving him a disapproving shake of your head. He shakes his head In annoyance and shoulders his shotgun.

You walk up to right before the right hole and pin yourself against the wall. However, to your horror, Ivan's already peering into his hole. Throwing yourself off the wall, you hop forwards and aim into your own hole with your shotgun. You almost fire at the ugly face you come across, but its caved in head reminds you that it's one of the holes you killed the stalkers in. The corpse fails to respond to your menacing figure.

“It is clear, comrade,” Ivan says from behind you. Looking towards him, you see him now with two amputated claws on his belt, the second one presumably coming from the dead corpse in his own hole.

“Ivan, I think you need to rethink your values a little,” you say, staring at the claws.

“What? I cannot have a trophy?”

Rolling your eyes, you nod your head to the right. “Let's go.”

The next hole quickly approaches, this one on the right wall. Sure enough, Ivan nods his head and tells you to wait there while he goes to investigate it.

You hang back and let Ivan investigate the hole himself, his shotgun at the ready. However, you're unsurprised to find that the hole is empty, and he simply gives you the okay to move. You glance back to your group to see how they're doing, and they all seem to be cautiously awaiting your orders. Comet appears to have recovered a lot, and is now holding her Herald sub machine gun up without a problem. She gives you a small nod to let you know that she's okay.

You continue forward to meet up with Ivan with your group close behind, noticing that there's now a third claw strapped to his belt, this one on his left side.

“I don't think that's how Dustkeepers do their practice,” you say, staring at the claws.

“I know, comrade. But I have to practice, don't I?” he rebuttals.

“Some Dustkeepers like to keep trophies, yes,” Connell comments. “But they're usually the more... weirder ones.”

“See?” Ivan says, looking to you.

“I don't believe that was meant to be a compliment, Ivan,” you retort, quirking an eyebrow.

Without another word, he leads you towards the final hole, which is on the right wall. Right next to it is the smoldering corpse of the first stalker you had killed in this hallway with an incendiary. You dislike the fact that it smells like burnt chicken; someone's stomach grumbles in the back.

“Ew,” Ley'ra pips.

“Don't judge me,” Beth whines, then you hear her audibly gulp after supposedly finally looking at the stalker corpse.

Ivan looks back to you with an expecting look.

“Alright, fine,” you whisper, rolling your eyes. His comically round eye holes make it hard to resist. “Don't let your guard down, though.”

Ivan gives you an okay with his fingers before walking forward. You watch him cautiously as he immediately walks in front of the hole with his shotgun pointed into it.

You're startled when two stalker claws fling out. Ivan immediately fires a shot, but it goes amiss. The claws latch onto his shotgun and throws it aside, and to your horror, reach out for his head. You try to aim your shotgun but get no clear shot, Ivan directly in your line of fire.

However, Ivan grabs the limbs and pulls the stalker towards him, its body still inside the hole and out of sight from you. One of the claws gets loose and arches upwards, but a single shot from behind you nicks the arm before it can come down. Another shot dismembers the claw off of the arm completely.

“Fuck you, hell beast!” Ivan takes out his knife and slices the other arm off, throwing the limb aside. “Graah!” He then jumps into the hole with his bare hands and knife, causing you to rush forward.

“Holy shit, Ivan, what the fuck are you doing?!” you scream, running forward to pull him out. But before you can reach him, he pulls out the stalker and throws it onto the ground in front of him, its dismembered limbs flailing about. It tries to snap at him with its vertical jaws, but he jams one of the claws that was strapped to his belt into its mouth. He takes out the other two and begins to savagely beat at its head, claws first.

“I! Will! Protect! My! Comrades!” he yells between each strike. The stalker has since gone limp, but he continues to smash its head with his now broken trophies. With one last swing, the claw gets stuck in the stalker's skull. “Hahah! Hahahah!” he laughs evilly at the ceiling, throwing the claws aside and presuming to beat his chest. “Do not fuck with Ivan, comrade! Aaah!”
>>
>>44695848
“Ivan! Relax, holy shit!” you say, grabbing him by the shoulders and pulling him off of the stalker.

“Hahah! I am sorry, comrade, but I am just finally happy I can become one with the universe!” he exclaims, standing up off of the floor. Beth behind you has her hand over her mouth in disgust while Comet looks on curiously.

“I don't know what that means, but you're starting to scare me,” you say, dusting yourself off. Ivan coughs, looking at the dead stalker in front of him with its skull crushed in.

“Perhaps I have gone a bit far, comrade,” he admits, looking to you with a finger tapping his mask where his mouth would be.

“Ivan, you're one crazy motherfucker,” Sya'ra laughs.

“Fine. I was just trying to have a little fun,” he huffs, moving back to the front of the line.

“That's a little sadistic for fun, if you ask me,” Sya'ra comments.

“Like my mother always said, we all have a little bit of a sadist in each of us,” Ivan explains, beginning to move forward. Cautiously, you step over the mutilated body of the stalker as you walk past it.

“I don't think I'd like to meet your mother,” Sya'ra responds.

“I think you might have liked her. She was a lot like you.”

“Hell, maybe I am her.”

“I am older than you, comrade.”

“Science has come a long way, Ivan.”

“Outsiders are weird,” Connell says.

“They're my crew, I have to deal with them every day,” you tell him.

“He even got married to one by accident,” Beth snorts from behind.

“Almost married, that's a big difference,” you snap.

“Can we talk about something else?” Ley'ra suggests through her intercom.

The trek back to the elevator was underwhelming. No more stalkers were around, and the rooms had been cleared of anything interesting. Overall, the floor was a relatively small one, according to Connell.

When you make it back to the elevator, you're relieved to see the door open with the elevator still there waiting for you. You assume floor D was cut off from access while the assault was underway, and your elevator wasn't used by anyone else. Judging from the sounds of battle vibrating through the floors beneath you, the assault was still going on.

Several minutes later, you find yourself close to the surface, the elevator display showing that you had just passed floor E. Most of you were exhausted, and half your team spent the elevator ride sitting on the floor. Thankfully, Ivan had left behind his... trophies.

“Bleh, I need a shower,” Ley'ra complains, holding her helmet beneath her right arm. Her hair is slightly matted from sweat. “It was hot down there, and these suits have a bit too much insulating.”

“At least they're cozy,” Sya'ra adds in. “Was warm enough to stand in out in the winter without any problems.”

“True enough,” you say, examining the distinct helmet of her Erinyes armour. “Let's recuperate before heading out to our next contract. Remember, we're going out into the city.”

“Mhm,” both Sya'ra and Ley'ra respond. True soldiers.

“First... we've got some explaining to do,” you say, taking note of Connell's gaze on you and the resting Comet beside you.

“When you've got time, stop by my office, alright?” he says as the elevator grinds to a halt, the door opening. There are several Dustkeepers milling about on floor D, but there are much less of them than before you left. Those large flamethrower-wielding men are now gone, and you presume that they're being put to good use down there.

“Will do,” you answer, giving a nod to Comet who you help up to her feet. Connell exits and is joined by two Dustkeepers who walk with him to the stairwell.

“Phew, okay. I think most of you can head back to the ship to rest for now, but I'll let you know what our next plan is, soon,” you say after turning to regard your whole team. They all nod.

>Bring Comet with you to Connell's office. You promised to explain to him of her situation, and this is the main reason you came to Unfound.
>Go find your next contact, Faulka LaCroix.
>Head back to your ship to rest, you've had a long day.

>Tease Ley'ra about joining her for a shower.
>>
>>44696539
“Keep the shower hot for me, honey,” you tease as Ley'ra walks past you. You receive a rather hard punch to the shoulder, but your armour thankfully absorbs most of the impact. “Ow.”

“Smooth,” Sya'ra giggles, walking past you.

“That sucked,” Beth says, giving you a cringed glance.

“Comet,” you say, getting her attention. She stops before you while the rest of your crew bids brief farewells before walking off into the base. “Come with me. Let's go to Connell's office, alright?”

“Alright,” she says with a nervous nod. She slings her gun over her back.

“Let's go, I'm curious to see what he thinks.”

“Me, too,” she says, her voice slightly shaky. The two of you walk away from the elevator and towards the stairwell, navigating to floor C.

With each step, you can't really believe you're back on the surface. Being down in the depths of the Unfound facility held such a different feeling in your gut; you truly felt alone there. Rather, that you were detached from reality and thrown into a place not meant for man. Or, reality. You don't know how to explain it. Maybe this is the rush that the Dustkeepers love. Exploring the unknown.

Well, you're a Dustkeeper now, technically. At least, an honourary one.
>>
>>44696991
The halls of floor C are emptier than before, but that's to be expected if most of the base is taking part in the assault. Without getting lost this time, you manage to make it to Connell's office in one piece. The two Dustkeepers who had accompanied him before exit his door, leaving it open for you to enter.

After walking inside with Comet behind you, you see Connell standing behind his desk with a map in front of him. Actually, two maps. One is of floor AB and the other is AC. Red markings and ccircles are scattered throughout the page, detailing the assault process and tactics currently underway.

She is cute and came with smut of her previous job in a pastebin.

Beth is the bullied intern and Comet is experiment found on an abandoned research station. Sya'ra is Ley'ra's friend from previous occupation and only joined like three or four threads ago.

“So, where should I start?” you ask, Comet standing beside you while you both regard Connell who's leaning against his desk.

“You tell me,” he suggests, tilting his head. You glance to Comet who simply shrugs. You guess you'll give the full explanation.

“Okay. It was actually right after we formed out crew. Everyone you see now aside from Comet, Sya'ra and Pete, but I don't think you've seen him yet.” He nods his head and you continue. “Our first contract was at Freeport, so our route was from Star Dust to Freeport. Somewhere along the route, we got an emergency ping of some previously unknown location. Long story short, we came across a top secret Federation space research facility that was completely abandoned, and the insides were trashed. Only thing we found was an automated turret that almost killed us and, well, Comet.”

“Interesting. A research facility? Don't see many of those,” he comments, nodding his head with his fingers on his chin. “Never actually been in one, but that sounds like a gold mine.”

“Unfortunately we didn't stay for long. Things didn't feel right, and we wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible.”

“Why?”

“Well... we came across a pretty damn cryptic message. Something about a Harbinger awakening, and that the Legion is coming.”

“Huh,” Connell says, leaning back and falling onto his sofa chair. He stares up at you blankly, but his brows are furrowed in intense thought.

“That's about all we know so far, other than that Comet was experimented on for mana energy research.” You look towards her, but she looks as stout as ever. “She can control energy, apparently. Something about feeling it move.”

Connell remains silent.

“You mentinoed that you've seen a suit like hers before?” you ask, looking at him curiously. For some reason, you think you lost him, but his curious eyes tell you otherwise. You think he looks concerned.
>>
>>44698126
Sya'ra seems more the type to insert herself in to your relationship, like a deadbeat sibling that needs a place to stay, except instead of being a deadbeat she's doing it for giggles. also it's only technically been like 3 days so... little soon for any of it.
>>
>>44698156
Not British, he's Irish.
>>
>>44698172
“Ah... I have,” he says, leaning forward on his chair, resting his elbows on the desk. “A long time ago, when I was just starting out as a Dustkeeper in Pulsar Incorporated's space.”

“Oh?”

“Passed by a curious sight in the Prion system inside one of their stations where some people in lab coats surrounded by Federation soldiers made a little scene. They where wheeling around a rack of those suits. My friends and I were curious, but they disappeared without another word. Came and went like nobody's business.”

“Huh.”

“And, just a few days later, the whole space station lost power. Went on the reserves for the next few days, but we left the station before any other developments happened.”

“When Comet first woke up, something similar happened. The lights in the facility we were in flickered, but it was only brief.”

“Hmm... ominous.” He leans back against his chair, resting his head on his knuckles. You sigh and sit on the sofa chair next to you, nodding to Comet to do the same. She reluctantly agrees.

“So... Harbinger. Legion. Do you have any idea what those mean?” you ask, leaning forward.

“Fire Legion, most definitely,” he explains, looking to the side at one of his shelves. You note a lot of red binders there. “And the Harbinger... not good news.”

“What do you mean?”

“Ever hear of the Heralds?”

“Of course,” you say, glancing to Comet's glowing gun.

“Yeah, I thought so. You own a weapon using their tech.” He sighs and rubs his face. “It's incredibly cryptic to us, too. But they weren't alone all that time ago, and apparently they had a thing against these Harbingers.”

“Ancient aliens. What else is new?”

“And these Harbingers are likely the cause of this Fire Legion menace,” he says, shaking his head. “Have you ever seen one up close?”

You blink. “No? We've fought some of them before, but aren't they just pirates?”

“They were,” he reveals. “Not anymore.”
>>
>>44698196
“And...?”

“Basically, they're not human anymore.” He sighs as he gets up from his chair, walking over to the shelf with red binders. He takes the very first one, which is filled to the brim with papers. “I'm afraid I don't have very many answers for you just yet, but we have a lot of research on this. Keep in contact with me, and I'll tell you what I can when I do a bit of reading.”

“Do you know a lot about this stuff? Harbingers and Heralds and whatnot?”

“A little. Most of this isn't really my expertise, but we've got a lot of people who do. All of these,” he says, gesturing to his binder and the rest of them on the shelf, “is the result of their research. Collecting data from all over the place.”

“Should we be concerned?” you say, glancing to Comet who meets your eyes with confusion.

“Yes, and no.” He flips through a few pages. “There's not much I can tell you until I consult the others.”

“You don't have to trouble yourself.”

“No, believe me, I do.” He lets out another sigh. “A Harbinger has been born...”

“...That's a bad thing, right?”

“Yes, very.”

“Can you tell me why?”

“Hrmn...” He stops flipping through the pages, stopping at a completely blank one. His fingers rest on the corner of the next paper, ready to flip it to reveal the contents of the next page. Ominously, he looks over to Comet while uttering his next sentence, “Has anything strange happened to you, lately?”

You look over to Comet again, who just gives you a blank stare. Taking in a deep breath, you decide to just let it all out.

“We met... someone weird while we were on the Jörmungandr helping out the Blackhawks. There were pirates there who were keeping a... I guess you can call it an alien, in captivity. Kind of.”

“Alien?” Connell blinks.

“Would you believe me if I said we met a space ghost?” You let out the breath you've been holding.

“...Huh.” He looks over to Comet again before looking down at his binder. “Yes, actually.” Connell flips the page, revealing a well-drawn sketch of something that looks similar to Elyon.

“Well, damn, here I was hoping I wouldn't sound like a lunatic,” you sigh.

“So, you've met one?” he asks.

“Yes. He went by the name of Elyon, and spoke as if he was inside of our heads.”

He lets out a loud breath as well, presumably as he's been holding one in like you. “I've never met one, but I have heard of them.”

“Do you know anything about them?” you ask, leaning forward again.

“Not much,” he says, disappointingly. You sigh. “But I do know that they're Heralds.”

Something sparks up in your memory. “Actually, he said he wasn't a Herald. He was... an If... If?”

“Ifraix?” Connell completes your word. “Not true. The Ifraix are Heralds.”

“So...”

“So, you met a Herald.”

“Well, then. That makes me special.”

“It does, actually,” he says, offering another sidelong glance at Comet. “The Ifraix are just one kind of Herald.”

“There's more?”

“There are, but... the Ifraix are the only ones to contact us.”

“You've met one, too?”

“Not me, personally, but several of us in the past.” He flips through more pages, but they're all scrawled out notes. “Has he said anything to you?”

“He had a cringey sense of humour, from what I remember,” you chuckle. “But he told me to protect... her.” You look over to Comet again.
>>
>>44698682
“Please stop glancing at me briefly,” she whines.

“Sorry, but you kind of are the subject at hand, here,” you apologize.

“No worries.”

“Also,” you continue, looking back to Connell, “we recovered a curious datachip from the same facility we stole Comet from. We've also got one of the best hackers in the galaxy... I think... who's working on decoding it. But he came across a whole lot of cryptic messages that don't really make much sense, as well as what he thinks is an AI contained within the chip.”

“Well, then,” Connell says, leaning back on his chair. It looks like he's had a lot of information to take in. “I'll admit, these are quite a new developments for us.” He nods his head and stands up. “Never thought there would be a link between those experimental mana suits and this Herald business.”

“I'm kind of still in the dark here, to be honest,” you admit.

“Tell you what,” he says, closing his binder. “You've got another contract, correct?”

“We do, and it's with one of your Dustkeepers.” You bring up your smart-ring to browse through to your contracts to find the one you're looking for. “Faulka LaCroix?”

“Hmn, her. You're gonna have a little trouble tracking her down.”

“I'm sure we'll find her eventually.”

“You will.” He picks up the binder and walks over to the shelf again, putting it back in its place. “Go on your contract and by the time you get back here, hopefully I'll have more to tell you.”

“Sounds reasonable.”

“But,” he says, his finger raised. He turns around from the shelf, facing you. “I would like it if Comet could stay here while we investigate her a little.” At this, Comet's back straightens. “I promise we won't hurt her. We just need a little more information, and we have some questions to ask.”
>>
>>44698708
Concerned, you glance over to Comet, but she doesn't look like she's immediately objecting. She looks like she's considering it.

“Also,” Connell continues, “we would like to make contact with your... hacker. We could use any information he gives us.”

“Comet? What do you think?” you ask, causing her to turn to you.

“I think I can trust these guys. I don't know where else we'd turn,” she answers, almost immediately.

“What?” You sit back, shocked. “Can you read minds to?”

“What? I can?”

“No?”

“I don't think I can.”

“Damn. There goes that plan.”

“What plan?”

“Nevermind. I just thought that maybe you could tell me the best way to unmask Ivan.”

“What-why would I do that?”

“Don't ask.”

“I can read mind patterns, though.”

You blink. “Isn't that technically mind reading?”

“You tell me~” she giggles, turning back to Connell. Shit, does she know anything about you? “I don't mind staying here for awhile, Connell.”

He claps his hands together and nods his head. “Thank you, Comet and Gavin. I assure you she'll be safe.”

“I believe you,” you say with a nod, standing up from your chair. “Actually Comet, would you like it if one of us stays with you while the Dustkeepers examine you?”

Comet looks up to the ceiling for a bit, tapping her chin. Connell remains silent. When she's made up her mind, she looks to you with a smile. “Yes, actually. That would be alright.”

“That's fine with me,” Connell says.

“His mind signature is different than anyone else's. I can sort of tell.”

“Geeze, take it easy on him, will you?” you say, shaking your head. “Also, please try not to read my thoughts.”

“I try not to.”

“Blech, stop making me feel adolescent. I was a little too rapturous in my teen years.”

“We'll be going. Tell your person to meet us at room B-314,” Connell says, leaving the room and leaving the door open for Comet to follow him.

“Will do, I'll message him right now,” you say, bringing up your smart-ring as Comet leaves the room with him into a part deeper on floor B. You type out a brief message to Troy who immediately responds with a blunt “Affirmative.” Getting up from your seat, you leave his office and navigate back to the stairwell. You're getting familiar with this base already.

After emerging onto floor A, you're surprised to see more Dustkeepers about. You have no idea where they came from, but you doubt the assault has finished just yet. Maybe some were sent back after clearing certain objectives.

You decide to walk back to your ship, but you come across Nettie's gunshop. It's pointedly empty of stock. Looking around, you nobody but Nettie herself standing behind her counter, her head just high enough to peek over it. Preparing yourself for the worst, you walk up to her.

“We meet again, mister cold-hearted,” she says, looking up to you innocently.

“Cold hearted? Where'd you get that from?”

“Nowhere. Nothing, just like my cold, dead heart.”

“Uh, are you trying to be poetic?”

“No, this is just my reality in this harsh world.”

“I don't know where you're going with this, Nettie. What happened here?” You gesture to her empty shop.

“Do you want to sponsor a child?”

“What?”

“For only some food a day, you can get the coolest and most popular girl in Unfound to join your crew.”

“I don't get it,” you say, scratching your head.

We never turn down a crew member

>Let her join your crew.
I wanna see her and Sya'ra have a snark-off
>>

>Ask her what she'd offer.
>”What? Why would I let a little girl into my crew? We do dangerous space things, you know.”

get to know her first THEN we let her join.

You realize she sold or got rid of all of her stock while we were down below. She tied up all her lose ends and really wants to go with us
>>
so, we just picked up a little kid with minimal education, we should probably start a trust fund to get her in to school or some crap
>>
>>44699675
I mean abilities and stuff. Space is a dangerous place ya know

“Uh, sure. You can manage a shop, right?” you ask, meeting her green-eyed gaze.

“I've done it for all of two years and was top of the class back when my school wasn't in ruins. Do you want my resume?” she asks, fishing into her over-sized jacket for something.

“...You have a resume?”

“No, I was joking.” She pulls out a piece of mint candy and offers it to you. “But that's pretty much it.”

“Can you manage ship logistics?” you ask, taking the mint.

“Math was my strongest subject, biology and chemistry being my second.”

“Geeze, what are they teaching kids these days?”

“Once, I created a mustard bomb to melt the skin off of mutants that were grouping up around the apartment complex I hid in for a year.”

“I'm going to teach you table manners, young lady.”

“Wait... you'll accept me into your crew?” she asks, her eyes suddenly going wide.

“Yeah, why not? I've kind of given up on making sense of things after—oof!” You're cut off by the impact of the girl tackling you, throwing her arms around your waist and squeezing tightly. Shocked, you pat her head. “Er, you don't have rabies, right?”

“No.”

Several minutes pass and several passer-by's give you strange looks.

“So, what happened to your shop?” you ask again, causing her to unhug you. She doesn't show you her face as she looks back to her shop.

“I sold everything,” she states, throwing her arms in the air. “I made lots of credits, but I owed most of it to Robby. Last minute gear before the assault and all that.”

“Ah, Robby. Don't forget to tell him I said thanks.”

“I didn't, because you told me not to.”

“That's a good girl. Do you happen to know where Faulka LaCroix is?” you ask, scratching your cheek. “She's my next contact, but apparently she's hard to track down.”
>>
I just realized, we have now acquired a loli. (or is she a near-loli)

“Right behind you,” she says, pointing to a space behind you. You turn around to see a figure in the shadows, cloaked and all. Long, silvery hair droops down the woman's shoulders as she rests silently against the wall. “Yo, Faulka! This guy wants to talk to you!”

“Huh?” the woman says, looking up. Her eyes meet yours. “Oh, hello.”

“You're Faulka LaCroix?” you ask, walking up to her. You barely notice it, but Nettie follows you along your right.

“I am. I passed by you earlier at floor B, didn't I?” she says through her metal facemask, nodding her head.

“You did, and I asked for directions. Pleasure to meet you,” you say, offering a handshake which she accepts with her own hand.

“What do you need?” she asks, her voice slightly raspy.

“You posted the contract, right? I'm your guy,” you say.

“Oh, you're Gavin? I've been waiting for you.”

“You have?” You notice a few polished stalker claws attached to her belt on the right. “Oh, we've been helping out Connell with the assault.”

“Hm, Connell...” she mutters, shaking her head. “Ah well, how did you find the facility?”

“...Interesting. I don't know how else to describe it.”

“Not bad.” She steps forward a bit, throwing Nettie a brief glance. “If you can handle yourself down there, you'll be fine in the city. It shouldn't be as hectic, though.”

“That's reassuring to hear.”

“But, I'm sure you've heard, there's both mutants and rogue drones.”

“We've handled both.”

“It seems like I got the right guy, then.”

“Oooh,” Nettie drones from your right.

“Not now, Nettie,” you say, patting a hand on her head. You look back to Faulka who seems to have ignored her remark. “When do we head out? We kind of just went through hell. Kind of.”

“Hmm... what time is it?” She pulls up her metal gauntlet to check something. “We've got another seven hours until sundown. That's plenty of time to rest.”

“Huh, sundown?”

“Yup. We're going out at night.”

Sorry to cut it abruptly, but that's it for this thread. Thank you to everyone who's played!

Next thread will be next week, same time. Most likely.

Loli: Acquired.

Archive is here >>44693257

See you all next week. Hopefully Nettie can prove herself.

We hit nearly 8,000 words this thread. Not bad.

Thanks for running!
>>
>>44699861
I assure you, Nettie is not for sexual.

In fact, if you treat her right, she'll see lots of development.
>>
>>44699891
Of course not the sexual. She's either the daughteru or the sisterfu
>>
>>44699891
Thanks for the quest SDA
I like how looming and gloomy the quest have become. The precognition of shit going to hit the fan in the future
>>
>>44699982
Wait, did we call mom like we promised yet? Also, need to investigate what our relative did to get this ship and Tlon help
>>
>>44699891
Exactly how old is Nettie? She seems to give as good as she gets so she can't be all that young
>>
>>44700715
Actually guessing maybe 11 or 12. But I just realized something.

Netti's not just a dustkeeper, shes a native to this planet. She was born and raised here before it went to hell. She went to school here, and she's never been to space. She might know what happened to this planet and have some idea of what Unfound is built over.
>>
>>44701420
>implying there is anything under Unfound and it isnt the entire planet
