In a night filled with the warm glow of red paper lanterns on the night of a festival, a small boat bobs up and down in the river. The lanterns are not the only red thing this night. The mayor, carried on a carved palanquin, is slumped over. Servants and revelers and priests are rushing to-and-fro in panic. Mere moments before, you watched the blood spray from this man from behind the crosshairs of your riflescope. He got up, twirled around as though struck with a hammer, and collapsed. Mission accomplished.

However, your sixth sense tells you that not all is right – and you put a great deal of trust in it when ninja are afoot. Indeed, you are in a precarious situation, wedged between two slick rocks with the sling of your rifle tensioned up for firm support and resting the forend on a foam bag between your knees. You look above you and see a young girl, perhaps thirteen or fourteen, looking down at you. You are pretty sure that she hasn't made the mental connection between the events that transpired on the bridge of the town of Sekigai.

You might be able to reason with her. You could also shoot her, though your heart recoils in disgust. However, you might just ignore your discovery and sail back to the opposite bank and leave.

[A] Try to reason with the girl

This is essentially a reboot from the last thread. I spent some more time streamlining my presentation, so it is my hope that this should be much more satisfying to any readers

Guys you do realize this is a setting where children can be assassins and bodyguards and such. Being lenient to somebody just because of their age isn't exactly recommended for long term survival.

Besides, you're an assassin, when did you grow a conscience?

You smile and wave, and put your equipment back into your little purloined sampan. The girl curiously waves back as you untie the boat and start paddling to the other bank. Keeping your head on a swivel, you watch the rooftops for the first sign of movement. Nothing.

You pack up your rifle and make a run to your room in a local inn. There, you grab your duffel and, rather than check out, head to the upstairs fire escape. Hitting the crowd, which has gathered in consternation, you choose to follow it rather than go opposite way. For any rooftop observers, you would rather be lost in the crowd rather than stick out like a sore thumb. With your cello case and duffel, you must be a funny sight, but nobody seems to notice so far. Then, you notice a commotion and the crowd parting like waves before a shark. And it's coming in your direction. Looking behind you, you see a clear path an alley way. On the other hand, you might be able to stand your ground or simply move with the crowd.

Stick with the crowd. If anybody is suspicious they can't act on it as long as you're in there.

Not sure if the stuff's been provided or if we can afford to lose it. If the latter, dump everything but what's needed to protect ourselves.

It's just street clothes, unlike the festive kimono the sniper is currently wearing. The cello case contains the rifle and suppressor

You push into the crowd and hook your thumb on the carrying strap of the duffel bag, to throw it away if necessary. Your other hand goes to the folding knife in your pocket. It won't be much against a trained ninja, but you might get lucky and be able to pull off a prison yard rush. However, you hear shouting. You would laugh at the fact that the boy yelling had his voice crack in the middle of it.

“That's the man! The one with the bag! Get away from him!”

Which implies that the gig is up and one of the genin has found you. You drop your duffel and start to run. However, some sort of confrontation is coming. You know it, and it will take everything you have to get out alive. The stock of your rifle is one of your own design and built to fit your body, which shoulders and points as well as the finest fowling pieces. However, working the bolt takes time and you might need to sling it if you want to climb or do any sort of acrobatics. On the other hand, the knife is faster and keeps a hand free, but you aren't nearly as good with it. And certainly not better than a ninja.

The gig is up. Time to fight your way out. Quickly, you open your cello case and grab a belt of cartridges, which you snap around your waist. Then comes the gun, held in your right hand in a trail carry. The immediate question is whether to run or to take this first shot and hopefully put one down. The danger of staying in place is that you know that genin operate in four-man cells.

Forgot pic, just something to give a visual idea of what trail carry looks like. It's honestly pretty comfy, especially if you have to run. However, my favorite carry position has to be African Carry, where the rifle is slung over your shoulder muzzle down.

The sniper is in the middle of a crowd in the New Town, which is downstream relative to the river. There is a genin who has noticed him and is calling for the crowd to disperse from around our guy. He has decided to get out his rifle and fight it out. Right now, he is debating whether or not to stand his ground and shoot the approaching ninja, which is possible because the gun shoulders and points very well. However, he is worried about the potential presence of a ninja on the roof or somewhere that he can be hit while his back is turned

You start backpedaling, pushing the crowd away with your elbows to avoid being jostled and have your aim thrown off. The rifle is held at a low ready. You have just one opportunity. Bring up the rifle and let your right eye see into the scope, and the glowing crosshair will transpose itself into your vision. But only for a moment. Now, the question is where the attack will come. With your back against the wall, quite literally, you've removed a few angles of attack.

In the chaos of the crowd, there is a moment of tranquility. For all of how things have gone terribly, terribly wrong, you are happy. The grip of your rifle is familiar and comforting. You don't even have to worry about shouldering it for more than a moment. It will be like hunting birds back in the mountains of your hometown.

High!

The young genin ninja leaps with superhuman strength over the last remnants of the crowd. Mechanically, you lift the rifle to your shoulder, where it becomes more of an extension of your body than a bulky implement. The bright red crosshairs superimpose themselves on the boy and you fire. His young face, sporting a few pimples is twisted in shock and agony as the open tipped precision bullet snaps apart within his body. From the looks of things, it seems as though you've perforated his guts and stomach. You've seen those wounds from a shot gone bad on a deer.

This boy could be your son. And you've just condemned him to die in terrible agony. You want to end the pain that makes this boy call out for his mother and grant him some final peace. But, genin operate in cells of four, and there's no telling how they might react.

You look back and top off your rifle's magazine on the run. It was one of the first skills your father taught you so that you could continue the family business. There is a twinge of regret. You try to avoid shooting kids. And even though you've had to do it on more than one occasion, each one weighs on your conscience.

“Stop that man!”

This time, it's the guards rather than the ninja. You look behind you again and see two other children holding the hand of their fallen comrade. The boy you just killed. Because of things like this, you have no respect for ninja. You look forward and approach a fence taller than you are, but this is no real impediment as you jump up and catch the edge. It's a bit precarious, but you have the strength to hall yourself over and hit the ground running.

Just when you think you are through, you can feel the hairs on the back of your neck tingling as if something is wrong. Looking around, there is nothing you can see in these back alleys, which only bothers you more.

You've heard about strange ninja tricks and you aren't about to take chances. You take out your pocket knife and cut into your forearm, enough to be painful. It is just in time to see a ninja, wearing a top hat and the flak vest of a jounin, rushing in to stab you with a kunai. You panic, but not so much that you can't act. You step out of the way and plunge your knife into the ninja's armpit, where the stabproof armor does not cover. Instead of bleeding out, the ninja disappears into a cloud of smoke. Another trick.

And then a forceful kick to the back launches you into the air. You can feel your ribs crack under the impact as you hit a tiled rooftop. As you lay on your back dazed, you realize you cannot give up now. If you were to do so, you will surely die or be captured.

You raise the rifle to your shoulder, where it will probably exacerbate your wounds more. But all you need is a shot and a hit. It will be an extremely difficult one, but you hope that the ninja will take a conventional approach where you can hit him.

Woops, dropped my trip. I last posted in the Orc Bartender thread and forgot to put it back on.

I will end the quest tonight on this cliffhanger. Hopefully, it was a pleasant experience. I'll hang around for a while longer before going to bed.

Right now, I'm trying to decide whether or not I want to continue tomorrow evening. This next weekend is rather hectic to the best of my knowledge, so I'm not sure about when to run next.

Do you think I would be getting into fatigue if I were to run again tomorrow. At least if I do that, I have the benefit of announcing in the Weekend thread.

Of course, I'll use this thread if it somehow still around tomorrow
>>
>>44682201
Well I don't know about your fatigue level but I would say try to run tomorrow but if you feel like you can't then just attempt on the weekend
>>
>>44682288
I mean reader fatigue. I'll be reasonably recharged.

I'm glad that some people seem to like this, since the title paints a picture of pure cringe, even if it is literal. I couldn't think of anything more clever.
>>
>>44682321
Well I like it because I've argued with friends that well trained men with guns could and would kill and ninja. Plus it's fun to play a anti-ninja assassin.

I would be able to join in tomorrow. What time would you start?
>>
>>44682419
I would like to start at 6pm Eastern or so
>>
>>44682619
Perfect timing then
