You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

"HEERMAN!" You scream as you watch your sister ship disappear in a cloud of fire and ocean spray.

She... she intercepted those torpedoes meant for you...

The world seems to slow down all around you. To your right, you could see Johnston pivoting, her fear and concern clear on her face as she twists her body to see what's happening. Kilo One and Two begin swooping low for attack runs, muzzle flashes from their rifles blazing. You could almost see the individual bullets whizzing down at the water.

But your eyes remain focused on Heerman's motionless body, lying facedown in the water, along with bits and pieces of what was left of her rigging, and a mixture of oil and blood swirling around her.

I will note that in real life, the destroyer Shaw had her forward magazines explode at Pearl Harbor, losing everything forward of the forward stack, including the bridge(!). She was salvaged, fitted with a "stub" temporary bow, sailed to San Francisco, repaired, and survived the rest of the war on combat duty. Shaw was a pre-war destroyer, smaller, lighter, and less damage-resistant than the Fletchers that make up our group. Four pictures of Shaw, showing the damage and the temporary repairs.

This post: "Starboard view of bow of SHAW in Floating Dry Dock, showing extent of damage to forward part of ship. Pearl Harbor, 12/8/41"

"U.S.S. SHAW (DD 373) - On Marine Railway. Looking aft. Pearl Harbor, 12/19/41"

There were other cases of destroyers hit by torpedoes in the extreme bow or stern losing part of the ship, but being salvaged and repaired during the war--the only real reliable way of killing a destroyer for good with a torpedo was hitting amidships, opening up the machinery spaces. There's a good chance that Heerman isn't necessarily DEAD, but she's in a VERY bad place--she's definitely dead in the water (not able to make any headway) and in the middle of enemy territory. My advice: Get EVERYONE in there to provide support, so that you can finish off the PT boat and their tender, and then tow Heerman's unconscious ass the hell out of Dodge. (I'd say tow her first, but that's not really an option under these conditions.)

"USS Shaw at Mare Island Navy Yard to receive a new bow, Feb. 1942." Good view of the stub bow that was added; from the abrupt change in the hull lines, you can see how much shorter it was.

Also, PT boats are little wooden boats that displace 100 tons, tops--usually closer to 50. GET THE ANTIAIRCRAFT GUNS INTO THE FIGHT. Your 20mms will tear them up really good. The 40mms will SHRED them. Your five-inchers are almost TOO powerful for the boats; use them at longer ranges. In close, the sheer rate of fire of the AA guns makes them much more effective, even without proper directors--you can just "walk" the shells onto the target, and they're murderously effective against hulls that are essentially racing speedboats.

The only ship I'd hold back from close-assaulting would be White--she's built on a tanker hull and can't really survive any torpedo damage, she's slow and unmaneuverable, and her flight deck is too easily torn up, while she doesn't have enough guns to be effective in a shootout, no matter what she did to Choukai with the Luckiest Five-Inch Burst Ever. Portland should concentrate her main battery on the tender, obviously, but her five-inch and AA batteries would be very helpful, and Sandy is almost ideally suited to this kind of fight, while the LCSes are as fast and nimble as the PTs, but with more size and more punch.

"U.S.S. SHAW (DD 373) Stern section in No. 1 Dry Dock after removal of temporary bow. Mare Island, California, Feb. 28, 1942." Note that the forward stack, left in place solely so that her forward boiler room could supply steam for the run to California, has been removed, as it was really no longer structurally sound. Really, Shaw was pretty much blown in half by the magazine explosion.

Damn right. And this isn't the *real* guro. Look up Cassin and Downes on Navsource sometime, to see what was left of them after bombs aimed at the Pennsylvania (in the same drydock) missed and hit them instead.

I'll give you a hint: the "repairs" that returned them to service consisted of taking off what few bits of equipment were still serviceable, then building entire new destroyers around that and giving them the same names and hull numbers.

Aaaaaaaaand I completely forgot to include the last paragraph of what I was writing. Here it is.

One last thing--during the Pacific war, US tank crews were bedeviled by Japanese infantry who would literally climb up onto the tank to try and pry open hatches and drop grenades down them. Their solution was something insane, but extremely effective. They would operate in small groups, and if one of them had infantry start climbing onto the tank, they'd radio the others to "scratch my back," at which point, the other tanks in the formation would hose them down with .30-06 coaxial machine gun fire, killing the infantry while not damaging the tank significantly. It might be time to bring that tactic up with the other destroyers--if we hosed each other down with 20mm fire, it'd certainly knock off the PT boats swarming onto us, but do "only a flesh wound"-level ignorable damage to us. (We'd certainly need to heal up when we got back to base, but 20mm isn't going to do any serious damage except MAYBE to our radar.)

And there's no translatable form of shipgirl anesthetic to knock them out and spare them the ever living pain of every piece of torn and bent metal, every burst pipe, every single piece of metal being welded together, every single square inch of stress and structures on the verge of failure translated into the pain and agonies of a human body.

"Johnston! Cover me!" You shriek. The blast from the torpedoes managed to shake up the gang of PT boats that had been bogging you down, allowing you to break free of their disabling grips. A quick sweep of your gun blasts them apart as you make full steam towards the fallen Heerman.

"Got it!" Johnston scowls, a seemingly red aura glowing around her as she speeds at the remaining PT boats, dropping 5 inch shells into them. Kilo One and Two provide what assistance they can as well, swooping low and picking off more PT boats trying to get around Johnston.

You finally reach Heerman. Up close, the damage didn't look AS bad. Heerman's body was fairly intact, despite all of the cuts, bruises, and burns. Her Rig, however, was a different story. Most of it looked as if it was shredded off like paper, thick black smoke flowing out of the breaches.

And then you see it. Her fairies. Easily a dozen of the little things immediately start crawling out of hidden cavities in Heerman's Rig, carrying tools and fire hoses and all sorts of miniature damage control gear, desperately putting out fires and sealing up breaches. Another group of fairies lifts Heerman's head out of the water so she can still breathe, while one hops onto the highest point of her Rig, furiously waving a pair of signal flags at you.

"I know it's an SOS! I'm right here!" You hiss. "I she alive?"

(cont)
>>
>>44657149
The fairy immediately begins waving the flags even more frantically. Boilers intact but flooded. Massive structural damage. No contact from the bridge, which you assumed they were referring to Heerman herself. Thankfully, though, it seemed the flooding and fires were under control, so she wasn't in immediate danger of sinking. At least not yet.

"Captain! Captain!" You yell in your radio. "H-Heerman is down! We need immediate assistance!"

"Kilo One already reported it. The Tarawa is already scrambling a CASEVAC bird." The Captain responds. "It should be there in three minutes, but we recommend you get her clear to a safer area first."

You look up to see that there was still a sizable number of PT boats, not to mention the Mothership, which was still producing more and was still glaring at you in a murderous rage.

"Johnston! Get back here!" You wave your sister ship over.

"What do you need?" Johnston pants as she circles back, letting the Kilos handle the PT boats for the moment.

"Get Heerman clear to a safe landing zone!" You say as you pick up Heerman's limp body and shove her into Johnston's arms. "Just pick a direction and go! I'll keep the PT boats off you!"

"But what about-"

"I'll be fine!" You bark. "Just go!"

Johnston gives you a worried look before hauling Heerman over her shoulder and speeding away at full steam.

You turn around back to the Mothership, still cranking out PT boats. You see the Mothership's pale face and enraged red eyes meet yours. She sees Johnston retreating with Heerman, and realizing that you're alone, gives an evil and smug smile.

Yeah bitch, keep thinking you have the advantage.

Ohhhhh, that bitch was gonna pay. You were gonna fucking DESTROY her.

"Kilo One, Two, I'm heading straight for the big fish! Can you cover me?" You ask.

"Ya got it, little miss!" Kilo One chortles. You see the two helicopters circle around for another pass, flying criminally low as their crews fire their assault rifles with wild precision at the PT boats below as you steam forward. Heavy .50 caliber beowulf rounds tear through the relatively unarmored creatures like butter, leaving flailing and twitching corpses as the only obstacles to your path.

The Mothership herself didn't look heavily armed or armored, but it was still an Abyssal, and you weren't totally sure of its capabilities. However, it quickly shows one when it starts expelling fresh torpedoes from orifices in its bloated main body, picking them up with its multiple skeletal service arms and just tossing them at you like spears.

This was gonna require some damn precise maneuvering or marksmanship...

>FATE POINT USED
>You currently have no more fate points.

However many torpedoes the Mothership was tossing at you, the fact of the matter was that it was not tossing them very accurately. You strafe to starboard quickly to avoid a pair of torpedoes as they nosedive right into the water next to you, exploding when you're already far beyond their effective blast radius. You shoot back to port to avoid another trio of torpedoes, and duck as one lands ahead of you at an odd angle, tumbling and skipping through the water and narrowly avoiding the top of your smokestack by a handful of feet as it cartwheels over you.

And you find your moment, a brief window where all of the Mothership's arms have expended their ammunition, leaving it open to retaliation for a few critical seconds.

Your thigh mounted torpedo launcher swivels into place as it takes aim. Against a target this big and slow, and at this range, there was no way you could miss. The Mothership, apparently realizing what's about to happen, gives one last shriek at you, her red eyes spitting nothing but rage and hate at you.

"Have fun at the bottom of the sea, bitch." You grunt as you give the signal.

With a loud WHUMP, your torpedo launchers eject their payloads, dropping four torpedoes into the water as they snake towards the Mothership. You pull a sharp starboard turn away from the Mothership. The massive Abyssal shrieks impotently as the torpedoes impact, causing a massive explosion that sends fire billowing out in a black and orange cloud.

"YEEEEHAAAAW!" Kilo One hollers. "You nailed that varmint good!"

And just like that, all of the PT boats scream and wail as they rush back to the burning corpse of the Mothership. The main body had been blown open like a ripe fruit, and of the smaller humanoid half, you saw nothing. Most likely incinerated in the blast. The stench of the smoke was rancid, smelling something like burning oil and sewage. The surviving PT boats huddle around the burning hulk, whimpering like wounded animals.

You get the feeling that without the Mothership, these tiny Abyssals weren't going to survive long on their own.

You decide that you might as well put all these little fuckers out of their misery. Even if they weren't a threat now, didn't mean they couldn't be one in the future. Your onboard fairies quickly load fresh torpedoes into your launcher, which you quickly fire again at the Mothership's corpse, engulfing all of the surviving PT boats and silencing their wails forever.

That's when you hear the sounds of multiple helicopter rotors. You crane your head up to see a fleet of Ospreys and Seahawks flying in, dropping troops and scientists donning biohazard gear as they move to recover what's left of the Mothership and her "children". One Osprey touches down near you, and you see the Captain himself standing on the ramp.

"Hoel." He says simply. "Good job."

He doesn't show any overt happiness or joy, no doubt because he still was keeping the current situation in mind.

Speaking of, why the fuck hasn't Nazibitch developed (or even apparently attempted to develop) an Abyssal tranquilizer? It'd make live captures a lot easier and reduce the amount of resources needed for restraining the captured Abyssals while she goes all Unit 731 on them.

>>

I didn't intend to say that she should have told us about every research project. A tranquilizer is very much in our and her interests to have, and I was expressing my confusion at the fact that she hasn't developed one yet, nor does there exist any evidence (such as through our talks with both her and others on the base) that she has even attempted to do so. That isn't to say she HASN'T, merely that we have no information that she HAS. (Notice my use of "apparently" in >>44659650, anon.)

>>44659912

When the fuck did I say we should accuse her of anything?
>>
>>44659916
No, I'm saying that it's stupid to expect someone to tell you about every single project they've got running and the ones that failed, when you're not even part of their staff and they're just showing you around the place as a favor.
We didn't ask if a tranquilizer or reliable method of stunning Abyssals has been found or is being worked on, so her not mentioning it is normal.

"Take me to Heerman. Now." You say simply.

"I thought you would say that." The Captain nods without missing a beat. "She's been taken back to the Tarawa for immediate treatment."

The Osprey makes for full speed back to the Tarawa. On the way, you hear news of how the rest of the battle went. The rest of the task force managed to eliminate the main force of PT boats, though the LCSes had basically exhausted all of their ammunition. White Plains and San Diego remained unscathed, but Portland received moderate damage from several torpedo hits. Otherwise, everybody else was fine.

You don't even wait for the Osprey to land, and leap out of the back ramp while it's still a few meters in the air. Your reinforced legs absorb the impact as you hit the Tarawa's flight deck, and you immediately sprint for the repair dock. You're led to a special secluded section of it, the Drydocks, where the most heavily damaged of shipgirls were taken. There, you see Heerman suspended in a bed filled with repair fluid, her eyes closed and mouth covered by a respirator. Numerous probes and sensors were stuck all over her body as well to monitor her vitals, as well.

"Heerman!" You yelp when you're suddenly held back by a pair of very strong arms.

"I suggest you keep your voice down." Vita advises as she gives you a slight but encouraging smile. "She's resting."

"Is... is Heerman going to be okay?" You ask.

"Well, she's stable, but the damage was severe." Vita sighs. "Her Rig is in ruins and her human body suffered quite a few broken bones and internal injuries, not counting all of the cuts and burns. I think it will take quite a while for her to recover."

"And where's Johnston?" You ask, looking around for your other sister.

"She was a bit... too excited." Vita says diplomatically. "I had to 'calm her down.' She's in the next room over, recovering from her fatigue. You should head for the repair dock and rest, too."

"Yeah... yeah, I think I'll do that." You nod as you suddenly feel extremely tired. You did a lot of extreme maneuvering during that mission, which had put a lot of stress on both your body and your Rig.

"Don't you worry, dear. I'll be here keeping an eye on your sister 24/7!" Vita says cheerfully.

"Yeah, okay." You sigh.

You head over to the Tarawa's repair bay. It wasn't nearly as roomy as the one at Pearl Harbor, and lacked some of the amenities. The biggest differences were that it was in a relatively cramped and enclosed chamber that used to be hangar space. The second was that there was only one communal pool. You quickly strip off your beaten and battered clothes, handing them off to the locker room fairies who gladly take them and rush away. You enter the repair bay and slowly lower yourself into the pool, a brief ecstasy rolling over you as the warm water contacts you skin. Inside, you see Johnston as well, though she looks completely out of it, her eyes half lidded and a somewhat blank expression on her face. A needle mark on her arm immediately let you know what Vita meant by 'calming her down.'"

You hear dull splashing as somebody else enters the pool. You turn to see Portland, in a rare moment without her signature red rimmed glasses. She glances back at you, and both of you just kind of stare at each other awkwardly.

Yes, appeared to have attempted but not actually done so.
"Why hasn't Vahlen done this thing, or at least made an attempt".

The sentence in it's entirety asks why Vahlen hasn't made a thing or put up appearances that she has tried to make such a thing.
But saying "apparently" doesn't mean that you are saying that you do not have enough information to determine if she has developed a tranquilizer.

As you posted, the word "apparently" is an adverb that modifies "attempted", so that "apparently attempted" with the "not" earlier in the sentence, makes it "has not made appearances to attempt".

This isn't water though, it's some kind of repair fluid.
Can we even drown in this stuff? Is it super-oxygenated? Does it have repair nanites or something that would make it impossible for us to drown in it?

I'd trust the medical shipgirl knows what she's doing, especially if it's not her first after-battle medical triage.

"So it looks like you took a few hits yourself." You note as you examine Portland's body.

"Well, with the number of torpedoes being thrown around, it was inevitable, really." Portland shakes her head. "Thankfully, my armor absorbed most of the damage, and if you remember, I do have something of the Devil's Luck when it comes to torpedoes."

"Heh, yeah. I never knew you could take three inside you at once." You grin.

"Well I didn't either- oh, ohhhhhh, don't you even go there." Portland glares at you with disapproval.

"Sorry, I couldn't resist." You chuckle weakly.

"All right, what do you REALLY want to talk about?" Portland asks suspiciously.

"You blame me for what what happened, don't you?" You sigh as you slip deeper into the healing waters.

"Well, partly." Portland sighs herself as she settles down next to you. "But as the task force leader, the fault lies with me. I shouldn't have let you three go out by yourselves."

"Hey, don't you take the blame for this!" You growl. "It was my fault for pushing ahead so quickly and getting bogged down by the PT boats!"

"It was my fault because it was my call!" Portland retorts.

"It's my fault!" You proclaim as you stand up from the water.

"It's mine!" Portland stands up to match you, as the both of you glare intensely at each other.

"You two should just kiss already." Johnston yawns, the waters already working to flush the drugs out of her system. "Then again Anna probably wouldn't appreciate you cheating on her."

"S-shutup, Johnston!" You wail.

"That's totally silly." Portland huffs.

"Yeah, she'd rather be jumping the Admiral's bones than me." You joke.

"Th-that's not true!" Portland pouts, her cheeks going red.

"Then why do you practically worship him?" You ask. "I mean, honest question. I'm not trying to insult you or anything."

Portland looks at you, and then back at Johnston, and back at you before sighing.

"Well, it's kind of a long story..."

"Sweet Pea, right now, we've got nothing BUT time." You point out.

"She's right, you know." Johnston adds.

"Fine. Fine!" Portland groans. "You see, you three came back rather late. I was one of the earliest shipgirls to come back, part of what's commonly referred to as the 'second wave', those that manifested after the initial group that arrived during the Second Battle of Pearl Harbor."

"Uh huh." You nod. You vaguely remember kind of reading about that. It was early in the Human-Abyssal War, after the US Navy retreated back to Pearl Harbor in the wake of the massive surge of Abyssal assaults. As an innumerable wave of Abyssals bore down on them, the USN dug in and prepared for a last stand.

Until the first shipgirls manifested.

"You see." Portland continues, interrupting your train of thought. "When we first started appearing, the Navy, well... didn't exactly know how to treat us. The current Admiral isn't the first one we had."

"Really?" You blink. "But you all threat him as if he was your only Admiral?"

"He's the only one worth remembering." Portland clarifies. "The early ones... well... I'll be frank. They were either cruel, incompetent, or a mix of both. The Admiral was the first one that treated us like... girls. Women. People."

Ah, now things were starting to make sense.

"Well... well..." Portland's face goes redder by the second, like a boiler about to explode.

"Come ooooooon." You say, pinching Portland's cheek.

"The truth will set you freeeeee." Johnston grins evilly as she pinches the other one.

"Fine, fine!" Portland groans as she gives in. "T-the truth is... the Admiral said he reminds me a lot about his daughter. And that really meant a lot to me."

"Oooooooooooh." Both you and Johnston tease.

"I bet glasses are his fetish." You nod.

"That little ponytail also adds a bit of charm." Johnston agrees.

"S-shut up!" Portland wails as she pushes the both of yo away lightly. "All right, it's my turn! Those rumors about you and Annapolis, are they true?"

"What... what kind of rumors?" You frown as you try to maintain your cool.

"Oh, well, I think it's better to show you." Portland grins and gives a whistle.

Almost immediately, a small trouble of fairies, all of them wearing similar spectacles as Portland, trot in carrying a small bag. Portland dries off her hand before reaching inside, showing you what looks to be a comic book of sorts.

And you eyes widen when you see what's on the cover.

What you see is a very artistic depiction of yourself, taking a very imposing stance over a very small and intimidated looking Anna. You notice the predatory smile on your face, as well as where the pupils on your doppelganger's eyes were focused on...

"It certainly is something when people are writing fanfiction about it." Portland smiles smugly.

"Wow, that's some pretty good art." You say, nodding appreciatively. "Whoever drew this really knew what they were doing. Mind if I borrow this?"

"Um, sure."

Portland gives you a rather quizzical look, as if she was trying to figure out whether you were being sincere or lying or something. You're not quite sure why.

Before either of you can say something else, you hear the door to the bay open and see White Plains and San Diego settle into the pool.

"Oh, Hoel! How's Heerman doing?" White Plains asks when she catches sight of you. "We heard she took a pretty bad hit."

"The Doc say she's fine, but it'll take a while for her to recover." You explain. "So we're just kinda waiting in here until then."

"Ah, I see." White Plains nods as she gently enters the pool and exhales in pleasure. "Aaaaaaaah, nothing like a good soak."

"Mmmm, yes." San Diego nods as a pair of fairies massage her shoulders, or at least do their best to. "You all missed a rather exciting recovery effort, towing Abyssal wreckage to the recovery ship."

"You mean convincing those poor sailors to do it for you." White Plains clarifies.

"What can I say? Delegation is rather tiring." San Diego smiles innocently. "Isn't that right, Portland?"

"There's a difference between delegation and... whatever it is you do." Portland rolls her eyes.

San Diego just smiles and shrugs wordlessly.

"Of course you won't get it."

"Don't get what?" You look around, hopelessly confused.

"Is this all of it?"

"I'm sorry Doctor, we couldn't recover much. The torpedoes destroyed most of the salvageable material, and the fire incinerated the rest."

"No matter. We just need one intact example. Now we just need to find a proper candidate."

"What about that destroyer that was heavily damaged?"

"Hmmmm, I've already gone over both Heerman's physical and psychological profiles. I don't believe she's a proper fit."

"The DoD is going to want results soon. They've already invested a lot in this program."

"And they will not be disappointed. We're dealing with a completely new field of science. We will give them the practical applications they are looking for. Do not worry."

"I hope so, Doctor."
