Last time on Military Magical Girl: You, Matsushita Miyako, "mage-soldier" of Transdimensional Imperial Magical Administration, was forced to join the 13th Magical Education Facility. You joined up with Squad 437 and recieved your mage rankings, putting you at a Rank VII mage. It wasn't soon after that your squad was called upon for a preliminary mock battle match against an enemy squad. You barely escaped with your life and had to spend the next couple days in the hospital before being released. It has been ten days since then.

Urewara-sensei was talking in the lecture hall, her black hair waving over her glasses as she paced the hall. "In 347 AE, the Seventh Magical Division of the URC began it's assault of the planet, Norata, beginning the long series of battles that would eventually become the First Mage War. Now can anyone tell me what the-" She was cut off by the bell ringing, signaling a sigh from the rest of the class as they stood up, collected their belongings, and filed out the door.
"Don't forget that the test on the Magic Theory will be on Monday! So do your best!" Urewara yelled, her voice obviously not heard over the rest of the student-soldiers.

School was hard for you, but at least you had regained some semblence of a daily life, a life that you had been forcefully removed from back on Earth. That had seemed so long ago.

"Matsushita-san." Said a voice. You turned around after packing up your bag to see Urewara-sensei standing over your desk.
"Yes sensei?" You ask.
"You always do well on the practicums and magic theory tests, but your historical skills are a bit lacking. I would suggest seeing a tutor sometime in the future. It doesn't hurt to seek help if you're struggling."

[]No thank you, I don't need help.

"Thank you, sensei. I'll be sure to send in a request soon." You say, packing up your books and papers. As bad as a situation you were in, you had come to accept it in the last couple weeks. If anything, you had to adapt instead of trying to push away people. If anything, that's what the fight last week had taught you.

As you headed out of the class room, you saw Kazue waving at you, her short hair barely visable against the vast amount of other black-haired people in the hallway. Not that you were much to talk though, your own hime-cut black hair was a style that made you blend into your old middle school. You sighed a little bit at the sight of Kazue and walked over to her.

"How was class?" She asked, pulling up her backpack from her shoulder.
"Fine I guess. Urewara-sensei said I'm having trouble with history so I'll have to get a tutor."
Kazue laughed. "I'm having the same trouble in my own history class. I hear Mio is pretty good at that sorta stuff, why don't you ask her? We can all study together?"
"Uh huh..." You reply. You weren't sure if studying together with Kazue was a good or bad thing, given her airheaded attitude. "Anyways. You going somewhere?"
Kazue nodded her head. "Yup. Karate practice is in a couple minutes so I gotta run."
"There's a karate club here?"
The girl smiled. "Yup. This place may be a military academy, but at least there's clubs to blow off some steam. I heard you were in the kendo club before you came here, you should join up."
You nodded, somewhat excited at the mention of a kendo club. "I'll check it out." Just another thing on your list of things to "check out" while you were here. Regardless, you waved goodbye to Kazue as she ran through the crowd of students, applogizing as she bumped into people. You made your way to your next class, which was

Your next class was Practical Magic and Device Application, taught by Harujika-sensei. He was a tall man with glasses and a receding hairline, a fact that he liked to joke about a lot in class. Contrary to his jokes however, he was a very strict teacher, something that took you back to your old middle school homeroom teacher, Tsuwano-sensei. She was a very strict person but everyone in the class loved her none the less. It was a tough-love situation.

When you entered the room you silently entered and sat down. Usually students were seated next to their squadmates, a luxury you didn't have in your previous class. However, you now sat next to Maiya. He had been uncharacteristically quiet since the prelim fight and had distanced himself from you. You hadn't confronted him on it, but he was obviously very distressed. You had decided to leave him be about the issue though.

You stretched, took out your papers and books, and began to set up for class. Harujika-sensei entered the room shortly afterwards and started to lecture.

"Picking up from where we left off last time," He began, adjusting his glasses, "we established that magic is indeed the binding and building block of the universe. It exists in every living and nonliving thing and through it life is able to exist throughout the universe. Now, in the past mages were able to project their consciousness into the very fabric of space-time, imposing their will upon the magic that permiated the material world. This proved too taxing for those of weak resolve however, creating a very high lethality rate among mages. This would alll change with the advent of the device in 1782 AE, which was the creation of..." He turns to you. "Who created the Metaphysical Magical Stablization Device, or Magical Device, Fujimura-san?"

Opps just noticed now that I put Maiya's last name instead of our own. My bad.

"Takenaka Toji." You answer, hopeing that your guess is somehow the correct answer.
"Very good, Matsushita-san." Says Harujika-sensei. You let out a sigh of relief and sit down as he continues on with the lesson.

"Takenaka Toji created the MMSD, allowing mages across the galaxy to have access to magic. However, this would permanently change the way in which magic was cast. Can anyone tell me what changed?"
A student in your class, Shimuda Misuzu you think it was, holds up her hand.
"Yes, Shimuda-san?"
"Instead of imposing one's internal will upon the space-time fabric of the material reality, a MMSD-assisted mage inserts their mana into the device which then translates said magic into a program stored within the device and exports it as a spell through the language of physics and mathmatics."

"Very good." Replied Harujika-sensei. "With the advent of mathmatics-based magic systems and the wide-spread use of devices across the universe, it wasn't long before devices, as well as the magesmiths, had to evolve their techniques. This led to the invention of Yonemitsu Haruta System, a version of the MMSD that allows for storage of quick-execution programs that speed up the casting process even further. Before called "spells" in the past, these new programs would beecome the building block for the new age of mages that would spread throughout the universe. It wasn't long after this event that the very nature of magic would change, leading to large scale wars and conflicts between nations. Now to recap, can anyone answer what the difference is between Old Age magic casting and New Age magic casting?"

[]One uses devices and one doesn't
[]Old Age magic imposes one's will and New Age magic transfers mana into math and physics
[]Old Age has a higher death rate but is more powerful while New Age is uses less mana and is quicker to cast but is less powerful

"Old Age magic imposes one's will and New Age magic transfers mana into math and physics." You say.
"Very good, Matsushita-san." Replies Harujika-sensei. "Well, that's all for today. Remember to do the reading in 'The Theory of Magic: Now and Before' by the end of the week. There will be a test on it on Friday!"

You stand up and pack your bags up. Magic theory always came somewhat easy to you. Math was an easy subject so all the talk about physics and math wasn't as hard to deal with as history was. Still, that needed to be addressed at some point. You probablly had to talk to Mio about it. Regardless, as you packed up your bags, you caught Maiya out of the corner of your eye trying to get out of the room. You call out to him.
"Maiya!" You yelled, quickly picking up your bag and rushing over to him.
He turned around somewhat slow and looked at you with a dull gaze. "What is it?" He asked.
"Uh...uh....do you want to have lunch together?" You asked. It was about lunch time so you didn't have any other reason to talk to him. Besides, it was one of the only ways you knew to try and get through some sort of wall between friends. It was cliched as hell though and you cursed yourself in your head for actually saying it out loud.
Maiya looked back at you with that same gaze of his, as if he was looking behind you instead of at you. "Um..." He said, as if he was in thought. "Sure I guess. Let's get something from the cafeteria and head to a place to eat. Do you know any place in paticular?"
Your stomach twisted. This wasn't turning out the way you wanted it to. "Uhhhhhh....I don't know. We'll figure it out later."
"Ok." He said. It was obvious at this point he was just going with you out of kindness more than anything else.

You stood in line in the cafeteria with him, silence envolping the two of you. You desperately needed to start a conversation.

"Do you like school?" You ask, trying to break the tension in the air.
Maiya shrugged. "I don't hate it, I don't like it either. It is what it is."
"I guess..."
"What about you Miyako? Do you like school?"
You find yourself smiling a little bit. "Reminds me of my old school in some ways."
"Back on Earth?" Maiya asks, raising his eyebrow.
"Yeah. What about your homeworld? What was life back there?"
"I don't remember."
Your eyes widen. "What do you mean you don't remember?"
"When the Alliance picked me up, they wiped my memories of stuff like my homeland and stuff like that. Helps keep the majority of the students loyal."
"Why didn't they do that for me?"
"They stopped a year ago when some systems found out and took the case to court. They won."
"So Mio and Chikako don't remember their planets either?"
Maiya shook her head. "We remember some small details, but not much else. All we remember with clarity is our time here at the 13th."
"Oh..." You looked down. You couldn't imagine what it might be like to not remember where you came from. Your father, your mother, Kouta, your friends at school. All gone.
"Think of it this way." Maiya said as he moved up in the food-line, "You don't have to worry about what they're doing now."
"Uh huh."

You got your food soon afterwards. Maiya turned to you. "So, where do you want to eat?"
"Uh...why not the classroom?"
Maiya chuckled a little bit. It was the first time in a while you had seen him lighten up towards you. But the dull look he had on his face shortly returned. "Yeah sure. Lead the way."

When you returned to the classroom, it was empty except for a couple students either talking amongst each other or generally just keeping to themselves. You couldn't think of something to talk about with Maiya so you kept quiet.
"Hey, Miyako." Maiya said, as he finished eating some rice.
"What?"
"Your device is a sword right?"
"A jian, yeah. What about it?"
"Does it have a name?"
"A name? I've never thought about it."

Just to give context, Yukiko means "Snow Child" in Japanese and Yukie "Outstanding Snow". I don't know what Byakushi means without the kanji but Byakushiki (depending on if you say it as one words or two) can either mean White Form or White Expression. Byakushiki is from Gundam and Infinate Stratos (which stole the name from Gundam)

You head over to class 24A, where Tsuwano-sensei taught Modern Military Tactics and Strategy. She was a very dull teacher, maybe one of the dullest in the 13th. But that didn't make her bad, even if strategy was one of your weaker suits. One on one combat you were fine with, as well as strategy in that area of expertise, but large strategy and tactics elluded you. The right decisions when looking at a large map of several thousand soldiers was just so confusing, especially when having to take into account the magic types and ranks of each mage. You sighed mentally but still got seated. At least Mio and Kazue were there. Mio was one of the smartest in the class, which came as no suprise to Kazue or yourself seeing as she was a military history whiz.

The classroom was several large war tables with boxes on the sides filled with miniatures that would stand for varying sizes of military groups, from divisions, companies, brigades, battalions, and even squads. Near these tables were the desks that the students, including yourself, sat at. Tsuwano stood at the front of the class and announced in her small voice.
"We won't be conducting a war game today but instead having a quiz. Everyone take out your pens. I will be handing out the quiz now."

The first couple questions appeared before you.

1. Ranking is determined by a combination of physical and mental capabilities of a mage. In combat, is it possible for a Rank IV mage to defeat a Rank II mage?
-True
-False
2. Company A is circling a mountain while Company B marches through a narrow mountain pass. An enemy force attacks from the passes above. What is the correct course of action for Company A
-Fall back and provide support
-Head towards the enemy base
-Call in for reinforcements
3.You are in enemy territory and are caught under fire. The first course of action is to:
-Surrender
-Fight until evac
-Prepare for an assault and defend accordingly
-Kill yourself to give the enemy no intel

realy... if that does not work then we can just do >-Kill yourself to give the enemy no intel..

At this point.. It's what ever you wan't it to be QM because I am not shure either... Neither about the scream nor about Esdesu...

oh, oh dear. ehh...

>True
But highly difficult/under certain circumstances.

>Call in reinforcements
I'm assuming this allows for a continued march while Company B will acquire support, eventually. It is important that the mission is successful, but one should allow themselves to be cut off from the rest of the forces.

>Fight until evac

>Leave the POWs and flee
If my assumption "larger force" is correct, it's not worth throwing away the lives of soldiers for a small chance of recovering a few POWs.

>Establish a base of operations and reorganize the troops
Order must be maintained on the battlefield, lest the ambush succeeds.

>Report the CO to a higher officer
Standard military stuff, I think?

>Weakening
Enemy morale more likely to drop, causing a them to flee.

>Wait out the siege and halt enemy supply lines

>Wait for an ambush opportunity
If what our fight taught us anything.

Are we playing Matsushita-chan here, or just Esdeath with the numbers filed off?

"Time's up!" Says Tsuwano-sensei, just as you finish. You sigh and turn over the paper and pass it up until it reaches his desk. Hopefully you got a good score on the quiz. He then goes on for the rest of the class like he usually does, lecturing in his same dull voice about strategy on the battlefield...

At the end of class he hands you back your quiz.
1. (True) Wrong: A Rank II has more mana as well as physical capabilities than a Rank IV and therefore will win every time
2. (Fall back and provide support) Correct: A military group should always prioritize the value of their comrades over everything else
3. (Fight until evac) Correct: Before giving up on the situation, a squad should take the neccessary steps to ensure survival
4. (Fight the enemy off and await for evac) Wrong: The life of the squad is more important than POWs. Do not risk other lives where you could be saved
5. (Establish a base of operations and reorganize the troops) Correct: Order is a neccessity on the battlefield
6. (Call for back up) Correct: Resistance is the best course of action
7. Report CO to a higher officer) Correct: Always follow standard procedure
8. (Weakening) Correct: A weakening magic user will always break a shield given enough time
9. (Call for multiple orbital bombardments) Wrong: Killing innocents is not the job of a soldier
10. (Wait for an ambush opprotunity) Correct: Wait for the moment to strike then attack, this is the strategy when one is outgunned.

You put away the paper and head back to your room.

Once you open the door, you take off your shoes and say hello to everyone.
Everyone is quiet.
You notice a paper in Maiya's hand.
"What's that?" You ask.
"He gives the paper to you.
It reads:

"Squad 437, Second Repeat has been chosen for their Second Preliminary Mock Battle against Squad 891, Third Repeat. The match will take place in three days. All students must attend. Signed, Fourty Seventh Head of Thirteenth Magical Education Facility, Hisako Kenji."

And that's where we'll end for today. Next session will be tomorrow at the same time (2 PM PST).

What the point of the quiz?
>>
>>44656945
>The life of the squad is more important than POWs. Do not risk other lives where you could be saved
>Killing innocents is not the job of a soldier

I am going to have a little "talk" with that teacher about what a soldier is suposed to do and not....

Alsow the alliance seemes prety damn nice for what you originaly depicted it... Like they are semi bad but not as bad as TIMA is what I originaly though. These rules seem a bit underwhelming but oh well....

Other than that this thread was scertanly enjoyable... Well except that the part where you completely ignored my BEAUTIFULY writen conversation sugestion, yeah I understand that it would not have realy been in character for how you try to picture her but... Comone! It would have brought at least a little humor!

1. To introduce some sort of worldbuilding
2. To have an insight to how school/the Alliance works
3. To have conflict in other forms than combat
>>44657109
To be honest most countries in the modern world don't want innocents to be killed. Especially when you are a superpower. And sorry about the earlier part but I also had to take into account what Matsushita's past was. She wasn't always a pyschopath. Remember, she was a normal Japanese middle schooler before all of this. Sorry if I'm not doing a good of a job though, like I said, this is my first quest. Thanks for sticking with it though. I would be more than willing to take any suggestions you might have.
>>
>>44657109
>tell a military instructor his military's policies are wrong
>be a press ganged soldier of said military
Yeah, go ahead and make a fool of yourself.
>>
>>44657208
>but I also had to take into account what Matsushita's past was.
I think that's fine. We're supposed to be playing our own character here, not some fanfic-tier copy of an anime character.
>>
>>44657208
Nah QM i meant that comment in a joking way its okay.. I will try to press a somewhat sadistic personality especialy a dominating one. this might be a bit abstract but, myabe she developed a superiority/domination complex after nearly getting captured forcefully and not being able to do anything with it.. Neither being able to have a choise in joining the alliance either.. This is just an abstract concept that I was playing with in my mind since part 2 though. Again Did not meant to drive over you QM I am still on board with this quest!

>>44657212
Well.. I was not implying that Matsushita would do it, It was a joking statemenet realy.
>>
>>44657346
"I will STILL try to if I can" did not mean that to sound so forcefull again damn it.. I am just drunk in the chat right now.
>>
>>44657346
So her being press ganged led to her killing other press ganged soldiers? Dominating other kids in the same situation as her or worse?
>>
>>44657346
>I was not implying that Matsushita would do it
I mean you did put it as your vote/response though. I'm not trying to say you shouldn't put your votes forward, but just kinda do it in such a way that respects her past background and interactions with characters. It just makes it a huge departure from what her established personality is is all I'm saying.
>>
>>44657480
I belive I only mentioned it in the post AFTER I voted.. The whole what Esdeath would have though is just a thing that I used to guide me in it and had no real personality backing up the answers.
>>
>>44657552
>"Hey do you think school is fun?"(still you talking) "I think this school is fun! Especaily fights... The thrill cuting in to anothers flesh with your sword.. To freze a person in to a block of ice.. Defenceles.. watching me with a frozen horifed gaze as I can do everything to them while they can't stop me!.... Ow and I like the architecture! it seemes nice! <3"
That was in your response and later you wrote it was your write in response.
>>
>>44657584
Regardless, I'm not saying you shouldn't write those types of answers, just keep in mind that Miyako has her own backstory and it would seem kinda out of place for her character to talk like that which is why I wrote her response in a certain way as well as have the responses chosen a certain way. If that makes sense.
>>
>>44657584
Ohhh I thought you were refering to the Quiz.. Yeah that was a bit, unthoughtfull of the character, i will think this one trough.

>>44657445
Well she took it rather well emotionaly based of part 1, She only realy showed some sighns of panic during the little chat with the doctor. A scared person would probably develop a form of empaty of victims like that if she sees them. Person that wasn't scared has more of a chanse of instead swining the other way. To try and to not end up in it again, ofcourse now that I thought about it I think we should do thise more subtle... Try to fit it in to her already established personality. And maybe.. Well, show it based on the curent situation? "Not in the same flamboyant way I did just a few posts up"
>>
>>44657695
Oh no I realize that was just an offhand comment.
>>
>>44657109
>These rules seem a bit underwhelming but oh well....
Sorry for the late response but what did you mean by this?
>>
>>44658329
Um... Okayyy I don't realy know what you are saying sorry to me for..

I meant that I thought the military rules were.. A bit more cold hearted, The way you pictured some posts earlier.. Just gave me the ilusion that there is no real "good guy" rules in the factions in this Quest. I gues I might have missunderstod it.
>>
>>44658396
Oh sorry I am a bit tired so I read your sorry sentence a bit wrong... Ignore my first commen in my responce post.
>>
>>44658396
Ah I see. As for the part on light heartedness, there will be plenty of real combat situations where you will be able to see that morally grayness I was alluding to earlier. So you are right there is no "good guy" in the factions. You just won't be able to see it right now since you are still in training/at school.
>>
>>44658455
Makes sence.. So I gues there will be normal soldier alongside mages right? At least thats what I got from the quiz questions.

If so that means we are at a special Military school for mages/magical girl training. Will there be, other than the constant sqad vs sqad combats, anything else to set it apart from a regular military academy?
>>
>>44658516
This is just one of the many training facilities in the Alliance. So no nothing for this particular school, but these types of facilities are special due to the fact they train mages within the Alliance. But yes you will be fighting alongside other regular soldiers in the future, that is, after you graduate.
>>
>>44658556
Good to know. Again good run QM, will be comming for the one tomorow to!
>>
One wonders why an organisation that forces teenage girls to murder each other for training cares about collateral damage of orbital bombardment.
>>
>>44659137
Because....uh....reasons
