Good evening gentlemen. For your entertainment, a quest thread. I would prefer if a more interesting race than humans, dwarves, or elves was chosen.

First race to three, and first place to three.

Locked in for Undead in the Reef. We'll be operating on a 1D100 system, taking into account the first three rolls. 1 is a critical failure, 100 is a critical success. I will ask for rolls. Posting.
>>
The waves crash gently against the shore. The moon is full and high over a shimmering reef. Palm trees wave in the light wind. A dead ship drifts silently to shore, spilling its foul contents into the water of the bay, polluting it. One of the waves picks up a black coffin, while another catches hold of dark wooden chest. Both are wrapped in cold iron chains, which are corroded to their breaking point. Which makes it to shore first?

The chest collides with a rock as it finishes its approach the the sandy black beaches, shattering the remains of the chains surrounding it. A foul black energy begins to spill forth, shattering the vessel to reveal a black diamond. Flesh begins to build around it, decrepit though it is. Memories begin to swirl, more than a little confused at the moment.

First to three, as with every vote.

Your eyes are the first thing to reform entirely. Of course. How could you have forgotten the mysteries which those two luminescent orbs have witnessed over the long years. The lich rises slowly from the sand, black robes concealing the strained flesh, held together only by the secrets which you have learned.

Yorik Darkemind walks the earth again.

Your aura extends over the calm bay, to the reef below, and to the ship a few meters down the shore. Three coffins are slowly being brought in by the tide. They are as damned as you are, though not nearly as powerful. The ship itself contains a large supply of... materials for your work. Decaying bodies, victims of some unknown plague.

Darkemind considers the caskets idly.

Darkemind deigns to allow the first of the three coffins to drift to shore. A flick of his wrist removes the cold iron bonds of the casket. He can sense unlife inside, though it seems to be relatively... fresh. Now that they are closer, Darkemind can sense that one of the two occupants still at sea is similar, and one is older. Much older. The lid of the coffin he just opened slowly creaks open. A rather feral looking vampire bares its fangs at him.

It is certainly about to attack, but only out of instinct. This creature is weak-willed, and he might be able to dominate it.

Yorik stretches out a hand, and musters full force of his will to dominate the feral vampire.

This appears to have mixed results. The vampire certainly isn't attacking him, but he can feel it isn't responding to his will either. It leaps out of the coffin, and lands on its haunches, scenting the air. It bolts into the jungle.

The next pair of coffins washes to shore.

Darkemind, for the first command to the first member of his new legion of the damned, begins to dig a pit with clawed hands. It doesn't take long to bury the black coffin in the sand. Soon, even the frustrated scratching from within is silenced. The dominated feral enters a light crouch, and sniffs the night air, waiting for his next directive.

Darkemind glances around. There isn't much shelter to be had here, besides the rotten timbers of the nearby plague ship.

The beach spans to both the east and west, while the dense jungle lies foreboding to the north. To the south is the bulk of the reef, impossible for any living person to explore, but not so with you or your companion.

Yorik's knee joints crunch as he takes his first few tentative steps through the cold sand. Everything seems functional, which is all that he's ever asked for. Death, functionally conquered.

He strides along to the rotting hull, it reminds him a little of himself. How it managed to remain afloat for so long is suspicious to say the least. He enters through the gaping hole where the hull finally has rotted away on contact with the air, a large section having collapsed onto the beach.

On the bottom level, he is able to further examine what he saw earlier - about two dozen corpses in various stages of decay. The sea-weather has not treated them well, but there may be some he can work with.

Not much appears to be intact, any perishable goods have long since melted away, but he locates a small armory with some rusted poleaxes, swords, and a few breech-loading muskets. The powder is wet, and useless.

The captain's cabin yields nothing of note, there are a few books, but the pages crumble when you touch them. There's also a small pouch of gold and silver coins.

All said and done, there's not a lot to work with here. Most of the contents of the ship appear to have spilled into the bay, two of the three holds in the bottom of the ship. Assuming one contained the chest with his phylactery, and the three coffins, one containing the corpses lying before him, that leaves a further hold unaccounted for. A mystery to be solved, perhaps.

Yorik begins preparations for raising a few simple servants from the soggy masses in the hold below. He allows mana to trickle out of his fingers, and into the corpses which are heaped like so many stacks of wood. The results are... mixed.

It appears his system is still attempting to make sense of this new flesh. Two of the bodies slowly get to their feet, and stand at attention. One stands, but begins to wander around, jaw snapping as it searches for flesh, completely unbound to your will. The rest merely flop, the magic destroying three of them beyond usefulness, leaving only ten left that you can work with.

Darkemind elects to send the vampire - by far the better tracker - to see what can be seen. Though it's smarter than a dog, it's certainly not bright enough to communicate verbally.

It returns several hours later, with a scrap of clothing, which it shows Yorik. It is some sort of cotton weave, crudely made, covered in bright red human blood. It also clutches an arrow, broken, its head a rough stone tip. This is covered in the black congealed blood of a vampire. It doesn't seem to have sustained any damage. The sun is starting to come up over the ocean, no further work can be done with your vampire.

Yorik tunes down the amount of mana his consciousness requires to function, for a time at least. The zombies are herded into the hold along with the vampire, who hangs by a rafter for the day.

The "morning" comes swift and sure as the sun sinks below the horizon. Yorik feels much recovered from the events of yesterday.

A strange sight upon waking, there are many footprints in the sand, and a simplistic, almost tribal, magic circle has been erected in the rocks. A laughable ward against evil, and it's directed at the ship. None of the footprints come within a hundred meters of the washed-up vessel, however.

Yorik snorts at their rather pitiful attempt. With a few minutes of work, a little vampire blood, and a few bones from the damned in the hull that would have been otherwise unusable, the circle is quickly perverted. Its intentions are clear, to try and keep evil contained, but the "evil" is so non-specific it would probably only have worked on the weakest of ghosts or thralls.

Anyone entering the beach will feel increasing unease as they approach the ship or the circle now, ending in terror that should drive them away. This effects most of the beach.

Deciding it would be best to attempt to track down the feral vampire that escaped last night, Yorik begins down the path, leaving one of his zombies behind to guard the boat, and leading with his vampire as a bloodhound...

Embarrassingly, he almost immediately is caught by a net-trap which springs up around the tracks, hoisting him twenty feet off the ground. The natives must have placed it that day in the hope of catching whomever or whatever was antagonizing them.

There is a great whooping war-cry, as a few natives burst from the bush, lead by what looks to be a shaman. He carries a staff which seems to be at least partially negating the effects of the circle. Yorik can't see where they've gone on the beach, but three more natives with long spears, pointed with stone appear below you, killing one of his zombies. The vampire you have dominated snaps down to his haunches, bearing his fangs and hissing, while the zombie stupidly stumbles forward, jaw gaping.

Furious, Darkemind summons a wave of heatless, black flame, shrouding himself with it. He thunders down with authority at the shaking natives, while the feral vampire bares its fangs.

"How dare you attempt to impede Yorik Darkemind! You will suffer the consequences of your pathetic efforts!"

One of them drops a spear and legs it, and though the other two appear to be terrified, they hold their spears tightly, ready to give battle to the remaining zombie and vampire.
