>Last time, on Digimang Quest.

Dash and co. beat up a giant squid demon, after it tried to grab his friend, leading to Dash getting his ass quite thoroughly handed to him by a flailing tentacle.

After a lack of appreciation from the slimy ship captain, they were shoved into a town full of sentient turds, with clues to find more humans, whom they quickly found near starved to death in a nearby bar.

After exchanging some pleasantries and unpleasantries, the group decided to track down a giant spider in hopes of gaining more favour with their ally, but first stopped on their way to acquire a faster means of travel.

With their new jeep fixed, the group are ready to hit the road!
>>
Only one problem still plagues the group. Only one of you know’s how to drive stick, and she’s in a rather unhelpful mood without any breakfast.

“Why didn’t any of you chumps learn stick?” Eva demands from the back seat, her foot incessantly kicking into the back of your seat.

“Well... it’s hard.” Jeff gives as a rather self conscious defence.

“I haven’t even had my first lesson.” You shrug, “My parents don’t drive anymore, they went full eco friendly a while back.”

Casey stays silent on the issue, but shakes her head, popping the clutch and wiggling the stick around randomly.

The blonde in the back seat rolls her eyes, her usual aggression returned now that last night’s storm has passed. “I see how it is, you’re expecting me to carry all of you, aren’t you?” She tosses her hair over her shoulders, “I don’t even want to go see this stupid spider in the first place! It nearly killed us!”

You shrug, “Fine then, I’ll do it myself. Can’t be too hard.”

Eva harrumphs in the back seat, an annoyed sound, despite all her complaining, while Casey slips around the car, letting you take the drivers’ seat. “You want to push the clutch in and-”

You cut her off, already smoothly shifting to second gear, as the jeep picks up speed, winding down the narrow dirt path that leads towards the mountain. “What was that sis?” You hear Jeff chuckle in the back seat, while the Digimon struggle to keep their footing in the flat bed.

Casey peers closer at the map Arukenimon had sent, “There’s not really much in the way of roads.” She traces a finger along a few lines, “But these paths are all leading towards the mountain.”

You pull the car around, taking a wide berth around the foul smelling Brandom. The woods start about halfway up the mountain, and if you squint, you can just make out a few buildings set above them, on a plateau.

“Don’t rev the engine too much!” Eva warns, “You’ll… um… flood the engine?”

Her brother shushes her, peering into the trees, as the car quickly rolls up the path. “If I were a giant evil spider, where would I hide?”

“I don’t think they’re evil.” Casey shrugs, “They just got kicked out of their home. Probably crazy from hunger is all.” She nods to you, “Dash and I found this crazy yeti thing on the first day we got here, and he attacked us, turns out he just had heat stroke.”

The twins grunt in unison, before peering out into the woods again.

You peer into the woods for a long moment, “You know what, let’s go ask up in town, see if they know anything.” The twins seem grateful to be heading out of the woods, as you punch the accelerator down, pulling the jeep further up the mountain.

Casey meanwhile, is silently fiddling with the radio, nothing but unending static across every station so far, barring one that’s just a man’s voice, slowly and calmly reading random numbers out loud, before it goes back to static.

The silence over the group is cut by two things, first you hear what sounds like Elecmon groaning in the back, before Eva screams, jabbing at the treeline.

You swerve at the last second, as a yellow bolt blasts towards the car, aiming for the front tire. The jeep rocks on it’s axles, as a second blast slams into the ground in front of the car, smoke pouring in through the windows as you drive through the wreckage.

Casey grabs at the wheel, and you feel a hand slapping at your shoulder, Jeff muttering “Stop!” over and over again, as you brake hard, the car skidding to a stop, as you look around at the small crowd surrounding you.

A bunch of blue dinosaurs surround you, dressed to the nines in what looks like riot cop gear, assault rifles gleaming in their hands, all trained on you, while what looks like… a man, who’s face is a giant revolver struts forwards, wearing a cowboy hat.

“Scuse me sir.” He greets in a friendly voice, tipping his hat back and leaning on the windowsill. “Did you know you were doing over eighty in a place where drivers licenses do not exist?” A smooth laugh drawls out of him, "And, well, we don't take to kindly to rule breakers round here."

You give an apologetic grimace, “Sorry, we’re… new around here.” The gun-man nods in acknowledgement, “Say, uh, have you guys seen a Dokugumon around here?”

The dinosaurs bristle at that, muttering among themselves, while the leader nods, “Yessir, we caught that nogoodnik just yesterday.”

“Caught?” Casey repeats, “What for? What’d you do with it?”

The gun’s eyes shut, crinkling in happiness, “Yes sir again. That no good spider was terrorising people that was trying to get between here and Brandom, and we can’t go having that now can we? On top of that, one of my boys caught him stealing food from our store! Can you believe that?” He suddenly rounds on one of the dinosaurs, berating it for 'lack of trigger discipline'.

“I can.” Eva grumbles from the back seat.

“Point being, we blasted that sucker til he shrunk back to a teeny tiny Kunemon and threw him square in jail! Any by the rule of Deputymon, he’s staying in there for a whole month to think about what he did!”

You lean closer to the window, trying to lay on the old Dash charms, “Hey man, look, is there anything we could do to get him out of prison early?” You ask.

Deputymon considers you for a moment, “Only thing that lets a prisoner end their incarceration early in my town, is another taking their place in jail, boy! So unless you want to be taking his spot, you’d best quit asking me dumb questions.”

Before you can respond, Casey’s grabbed your arm, “You’re not going to jail Dash.” She insists flatly.

“Hey, uh, Mr Deputymon?” Jeff pipes up from behind you, as Eva’s digimon flaps up onto the hood of the car, the other Digimon moving up to stretch their legs finally. “You haven’t seen any other humans around, have you? Or heard of any?”

He shakes his head, consulting his little group, but comes back with a resounding “Nope, can’t help you sir.” He shrugs apologetically, “Though one boy says there’s a digimon who’s been flapping around with something on their back that ain’t another Digimon. Last heard from out east, by a little place called Threekamz. Can’t tell you what it was, but it was riding on a Devidramon, with a little flower beside it.” He shrugs, “That’s all we got. Anything else?”

“Can we at least see him?” You ask.

Deputymon shakes his head, “Highest security only little man, that means me and only me is allowed in.”

Damn, this guy’s a prick though. “Alright, can you at least give him a message from us?” The gun nose nods, “Just tell him that Web Forest is back in Arukenimon’s hands, and it’s cool for him to go home.”

“I’ll make sure to pass that on, little partner.” The gun winks at you, “Now what say you mosey on back down the mountain? My boys get uneasy around strangers.”

To emphasise his point, one of the dinos aims his gun at the jeep, a shot pinging off the front bumper.

Okay, leaving now.

You slam the car into reverse, quickly flooring it backwards down the mountain, as DemiDevimon flutters to catch up. You throw it in neutral, letting the jeep drift, fighting the wheel for control as the car about faces, giving the bat time to re-enter, before making a break for the bottom of the mountain.

Eva demands to be let out at the bottom of the hill, back on the outskirts of Brandom, fanning her face and breathing heavily again, while Jeff and Casey take the chance to check the car. Other than a few scratches, there’s no lasting damage to the vehicle.

“Those guys really jumped the gun.” Elecmon sighs, “All we wanted to do was talk to them.” You shoot him a look over the pun, but he doesn’t even seem to realise he made it. “What?”

You smirk a little, tussling the fur between his ears, “Nothing buddy. Car treating you alright?”

He shrugs, “Could be better. It’s not easy on four legs and all. But, if it makes life easier for everyone else, I can bear it.”

“You hear that Casey?” Jeff remarks snidely.
>>
“Oh shut it, you tub of lard!” She snaps back, Jeff’s face falling as he slinks around the jeep again.

“These two really don’t get along well.” Casey sighs, watching the twins before turning to you. “I was thinking, before we left the area, we should probably actually try to ask the people in Brandom if they know anything…. And if we do it in of two humans and two digimon, we’ll cover more ground.”

“Alright, I’ll go with Eva, probably best to give them some time to breathe.” You suggest.

Casey just raises her eyebrows, “Manwhore.” She mutters, a hint of a laugh on her breath, as she swivels around the jeep to take Jeff along.

You make sure to pluck the keys from the jeep, before approaching the blonde, “Yo, Case reckons we should ask around for more clues, in case we’re off on a wild goose chase.”

She sighs, eyes rolling, “Whatever. Lead the way, grunt.”

Oh, you’re a grunt now, are you? You let it slide for the moment, heading down the main street, the docks you arrived on in plain view, as DemiDevimon and Elecmon tag along in your wake.

Thinking for a moment, you ask the bat Digimon to fly to the highest point in town, a weather vane atop the saloon you spent the night in, to get a better lookout for any humans you might have missed.

There are still a few puddles lining the street after the rain last night, an electrical charge spreading through one when Elecmon steps in one, a sight which quickly sets Eva yelping and jumping back.

You and Elecmon both stare at her, before she regains composure, brushing past both of you into a store. “Welcome to the Brandom joke shop!” A Sukamon greets her loudly, “May I interest you in this doll? It’s a baby with aids. LOL!”

Eva quickly exits again, shaking her head, nose wrinkled in disgust. “Stupid town, stupid people, stupid turd…. people!” She mutters under her breath. “Wish I was at home. Wish I was at work! Hell, I wish I was at school right about now.”

Well, if she doesn’t want to talk then… You wave the bat down holding an arm out for her to purchase on.

“Yo, what’s up?” She asks, and BOY do those claws look sharp.

You shrug, “Just thought I’d get to know you. Don’t think we’ve said a word to each other.”

She wriggles her wings a little, smiling up at you. “Oh. Well then, guess my job’s done for now.” She spins on your arm, before collapsing backwards, resting her round body against your chest.

You catch Eva glancing at you over her shoulder, sniffing when you catch her and whipping her head back around. “So, you and Gotsumon are from this area right? How long do you reckon it’ll take to reach this Threekamz place?”

She hums in consideration, “With the jeep? Maybe a day and a half, if we don’t stop for sleep and drive in shifts. Two if we all make camp.” She gestures with a wing. “It’s on another island, but don’t worry, there’s a bridge that connects them together, and it’s not even out of our way from here.”

Yeesh, further than you’d have thought. “And hey…” You glance down at the bat, as she lowers her voice. “I know Eva’s a bit of a pain to deal with… but thanks for giving her a chance. You didn’t have to share your bed last night. I’m sure if you keep trying to get her to lower her walls, she’s a big softie underneath.”

Before you can respond, the bat rolls out of your grip and flaps back over to Eva, resting atop her now falling apart beehive hairdo and chatting with the girl.

“Human females are so complicated.” Elecmon mutters to you. “I don’t get it, talking with Hagurumon is so straightforward.”

“Tell me about it.” You sigh, checking the time on your phone, nearly noon by now, before you remember the remaining money, sitting in your pocket, below your phone.

You shake your head, clearing your thoughts. Plenty of time to play nice AFTER you’ve gotten some info. The bruises on your stomach flare with pain for a moment as you pocket your phone again, peering into a random store front, camping supplies lining the walls inside.

“Could have been people through here.” Elecmon agrees, “If they didn’t know about the jeep, it seems an obvious choice.”

The Sukamon behind the counter greets you with a wide grin. “Makuramon tongue my anus!” It cackles loudly, by way of greeting.

“Charming place.” You hear Eva mutter, having followed you inside.

“Hey- uhhh... asshole, I bet you’re so dumb… that if you heard about any humans, you’d want to not tell us.” You bark out suddenly.

It scratches it’s head. “But… I’m not dumb.” He mutters slowly. “I-I’ll prove it! I heard from a buddy of mine, that there was some red lady in the Web forest that looked like a human.”

Well… damn it. You pinch the bridge of your nose. “Anything else?” You sigh.

It pauses… pauses… pauses…

“Oh! There’s also supposed to be some weirdo that no one recognises, up near Coded Village, they’re teaching all the baby digimon how to write in some weirdo language too.” He pulls out a chalkboard, scribbled on in an alien alphabet… one that matches the symbols on your phone.

“Teaching?” Eva cuts in. “Dash, you don’t think.. Could it be Mrs Kelli?” She turns to the bat, “How far is Coded Village Demi?”

The bat grimaces, “Two days, in the opposite direction from Threekamz.”

She sends your digimon friend a dirty glare, “He started it.” She snaps. “He just can’t take as good as he dishes out. You saw how he talked to me!”

DemiDevimon flaps up beside her head, “Eva? Can we just drop it for now? I know you’re cranky, and the storm kept you awake most of the night, but can’t we try to get along?”

I don't think the at Coded Village is Sensei. If they're teaching the symbols on the digivice, it's probably Genai or an equivalent.

The flyer is our only lead concerning Sensei. We should try to follow it, I say.
>>
>>44607004
How is it the only one concerning the teach?
>>
We should ask the Sukamons if one of them want to go to jail for a month.

Knowing them, a few would like to increase their "street creed", look cool and tough, or just use it to flirt with women by playing up the "bad guy" part.
>>

>>
>>44607021

Because teaching about digivice symbols is probably not one of Sensei's skills, and the Sukamon was able to tell what an human is AND scribble what the symbols looked like (implying that he saw them), but not if the one teaching was an human.

You step forward, slinging an arm around her shoulders, “Aww, does someone need a hug?” You ask with a grin.

She huffs and pouts, punching you in shoulder, but much softer than the last time you touched her. “Don’t touch me.”

You pull off her, massaging the tender bruise on your chest that she’d struck. “Alright, how’s about this then. If I pay for your lunch, will you lighten up before we hit the road?”

The corner of her mouth quirks, as she stares dead ahead across the road, before finally muttering, “It could help.”

She doesn’t seem to object to the first sushi place you find, though her nose does wrinkle when she notices the Sukamon aren’t using gloves. Doesn’t stop her wolfing it down all the same.

While she eats, you relieve yourself in the bathroom, almost jumping out of your skin when you turn the faucet, only for a spider to crawl out, a piece of paper attached to it’s tiny body. Seems to be a series of numbers, along with the scrawled instructions of “Enter into digivice.”

At a guess that’s your phone, which… now that you check it, has lost the usual phone app, your contact list deleted. Without any idea what to do, you press the paper to your screen, only for it to absorb into the screen, a spider icon popping up down the bottom of the screen, with a purple lipstick mark painted on it’s back, next to a dollar sign.

With a tap, the phone starts ringing on speakerphone, before a holographic projection shoots up out of the screen, projecting Arukenimon’s more human face in the air above your phone. “Ah, you got my note boy. Good to see. Casey should be getting her copy some time soon as well. I just wanted you to know, that I’ve set up a bank account for you two to share, with a… minor donation inside of it. This device can function as a card, as long as the account has money, simply press the screen to their register and the money should transfer.” She leans forward, adjusting her sunglasses with a coy smile. “Are calling me from a bathroom? And alone no less? My, but you are forward.”

You give her a smile, “You’re too kind Aru, thanks. And may I just say, you’re looking lovely as always?”

She smirks to herself, “Flattery will get you everywhere boy. That and reclaiming my home, of course.” An angry howl roars dully in the distance. “Apemon says hello too.” She laughs.

“Speaking of your home, I think I found one of your lovelies over here. He’s been beaten up and thrown in jail in a place called Khoman Doe, by a crazy Deputymon.” She frowns at that, but you elaborate. “If it helps it’s only for thirty days? Unless someone is willing to take his place.”

She purses her lips, “I’ve heard of this village, even with help getting a Kunemon out of there by force would be… difficult, more than dealing with Apemon and his thugs.” A coy smile plays across her lips, “Hang on, are you still in Brandom?” You nod, “Well then, I’m sure you’re familiar with the locals. I’m sure one would be easy to trick…” She leans closer to the camera, licking her lips, “To a boy of your talents, of course.”

You rub your chin, thinking…. “What if… I trick thirty Sukamon, and each of them serve a day of the sentence? That’ll show Deputymon, and his stupid system.”

She laughs, “I like the way you think boy. Once Dokugumon makes his way home, I may even have to find a way to reward you beyond simple finances. Though if you continue to please me, I may just keep the funds flowing. Making a living off silk is rather easy when you produce it naturally. Doubly so when my lovelies are around to help.” The screen shifts closer and she puckers her lips, “In the meantime, I have things to do. Make sure to call me sometime, it gets lonely up in this spire by myself. Kisses. ” With that, she hands up, the holographic screen disappearing.

“Dash?” You startle, jumping away and looking for the source of the voice, Elecmon standing by your shins. “Tricking thirty Sukamon into going to jail… seems time consuming. Are you sure about this?”

You shoot him a nervous grin, making sure you think… calming thoughts after that conversation. “Maybe I can get them all in one place, before making a speech to the whole town?”

“The saloon last night, it had a capacity of nearly fifty people. It seems the obvious choice, though it does also mean waiting here until nightfall, while the other humans are doing who knows what and going who knows where?”

You give him a grin, “Oh… I think I know how to rope some suckers in alright.”

You explain the situation to Eva and she follows along, insulting the plan the entire way, as you gather sticks, string, a sign and a pen.

Marking off an area in the public square, you erect a sign, ‘Only Tuff Guiz allowed.’ You scrawl out, making sure these guys will understand it. “Let’s have a slogan too.” You add, scribbling underneath, ‘Be a big guy. 4u.’

Soon enough, you’ve got a sizeable crowd forming, curious to see your sign, and your tough guys only area, occupied exclusively by you, Eva and your digimon. “I’m a pretty tough guy! I’m basically the toughest in town!” One Sukamon announces, finally bouncing forward to propel himself into the area.

You catch sight of Casey and Jeff, approaching slowly, seeming bemused by your show, as you catch the Sukamon’s wrist.

“Hold on there champ. Only REAL tough guys are allowed in this place.” The Sukamon mutter among themselves, alarmed by your announcement. “You all want to know what it takes to be a REAL tough guy huh?” There’s a chorus of agreement, “Then listen, puny weaklings, to my story.”

You pause, hadn’t thought this far ahead. “‘Are you a wimp? I was, then I spent a night in jail. Now I’m a jerk and everyone loves me!” You flex your arms, ignoring the pain in your chest, as the Sukamon start to cheer. “In jail, I became HUGE. And not just HUGE. HUGE XXL.”

“Where can we find this jail?” Casey asks from the back, trying to hide her laughter.

You snap your fingers in her direction, “That’s a good question person I’ve never met before! The only way to get tough…. REAL tough, is to spend a night in the Khoman Doe prison, in another man’s place. Just up the mountain. And only the REALLY tough guys would swap places with a real badass like a Kunemon.”
>>
“I’m a badass! Watch me go!” A Sukamon announces, trying to sound heroic, while it’s voice cracks. That gets the crowd riled up, as they all hurriedly bounce their way towards the edge of town, eager to be the first ones in prison.

Casey and Jeff applaud your show in the now empty square, even Eva is doing her best to hide a smile. “Well that was easy.” Jeff laughs. “Should have conned a free dinner out of them too.”

“Well, I think we’ve emptied the town.” Casey points out. “We could… I mean, the restaurants are all empty… with huge amounts of food, unguarded…”

Elecmon shakes his head, “I don’t want to get involved in stealing. Tricking them to save an ally is one thing, but this…”

You nod, “I agree, let’s not go stealing from the mentally challenged. They’re already doing us a solid by going to jail.”

Casey holds her phone out, “I was gonna pay for it, jeez. Arukenimon wired some money to our bank account. Enough to feed us for a month, and then some.”

Oh. Probably should have checked the account first. “This is acceptable.” Elecmon nods, following Casey into a diner, while you and Jeff fetch the jeep, bringing it around in front, as the girls load food into the flatbed.

With enough to last a few days, Casey rings it up, pressing her phone to the register, she shoots a thumbs up. “All legal and above the board.” She nods, as Eva takes the passenger seat.

“What?” She demands, as Casey stares at her.

“I… wanted to sit in the front.” Casey mumbles, kicking her feet, as you let the engine purr to life.

“Too bad.” Eva sighs, “You sat in the front last time, you snooze you lose.”

shout "reload" then give the passenger seat to whoever says shotgun first. in the case of a draw give it to whoever makes it to the seat out of those who drew

I mean, I'm pretty sure that whoever is teaching strange digivice signs, it isn't Sensei, and I'd feel bad to leave her behind.

>>
>>44608829

>>44608771
I'm personally all for learning how to read in this world. Hell, we can't even read our phone.
>>
>>44608829
I highlt doubt the flyer is a one time deal. Funny thing about flying around on a large digimon, it's not exactly a sublte mode of travel.

Besides, I don't want to go on a wild goose chase for the next who knows how many in-game days.
>>
>>44608866
Well I am guessing anon's reasoning that the signperson is less likely to move away than the dragonperson
>>
>>44608898
Yes, which in turn means that we're far more likely to actually be able to catch up with the signperson, whereas chasing after an airborne person is gonna require us to be both fast and spot on in our pick of direction. The fact that we're currently dicking around a bunch of seabound islands doesn't help matters either.
>>
>>44608898

Yep, that's my reasoning.
>>
>>44608939
Or you basically let this one chance slip and end up waiting a ton for another while the sign guy just stays there and would be accessible later.
You have zero way of knowing anon.
>>
>>44608939

Point is, giant flyer risks to get out of reach soon.

Though, a smart thing to do would be to ask Aru Aru if she can ask in Tube Town or to the forest's travelers if they saw/heard of an human. We kind of asked only a few persons, last time.
>>
>>44608994
Yes. And neither do you. And, as I stated, when it comes to the odds I think heading straight for the sign is better than chancing missing both on a wild goosechase.

You draw your hand down your face, breathe in… breathe out. “Alright girls, paper scissors rock. Winner gets shotgun.”

Eva scowls, “Why should I? It’s my seat, I’m in i-”

Casey starts chanting, “Paper, Scissors,-

“Rock!” Eva throws her fist out, losing to Casey’s paper. “Damn it!” She kicks the dashboard for a moment, before clambering through the front seats, hip brushing your shoulder as she flops into the back seat, her brother smirking to himself.

With seating arranged, you fill them in on the info you got, about Coded Village. “Eva thinks it’s our best chance of finding Ms Kelli.” You explain, the blonde too busy sulking as Casey claims shotgun.

“On the other hand, the flying person is more easy to lose.” Casey muses. “Being on a chain of islands, we’re at a disadvantage chasing someone in the air.”

“But whoever’s teaching these babies, even if they’re not Ms Kelli, has gotta be pretty smart, right?” Jeff asks, “Maybe they know a way home? And someone flying around with a person on their back isn't subtle. We can probably find more clues on them, even if we lose the fresh trail..."

The jeep rolls out of town, jostling everyone about as you almost run it right into a lamp post, before recovering smoothly, finding a straight path leading into the wastelands below the mountain, guided by directions from DemiDevimon, the Jeep chews up the miles beneath you, hours rolling by, as Casey finally gets the radio working, hooking it up through her phone, some loud jpop or kpop or something song blaring out through the speakers, before Casey hurriedly shuts her phone off, hiding her face and asking if anyone else wants to put something on.

Eva’s music is all angry punk rock, and Jeff’s refuses to let anyone touch his. Shrugging you fish your phone out, passing it over, Casey sifts through it, before finally settling on some Thin Lizzy… forgot you even had that on there.

Oh well, it eats up time, nothing but blasted desert rolling by as far as the eye can see, Demi assuring you that you’re going in the right direction.

Jeff breaks the complete lack of silence after a while. “Hey guys!” He calls over the roar of the engine. “You think are families are worried? Back home? It’s been like… five days. It should be the weekend by now.”

Oh shit… mum and dad are either gonna cry when they hear what you’ve been doing… or kill you. “What I want to know is.” Casey cuts in, smiling to herself for some reason, “If other kids who have disappeared from school also got sucked in.”

“Disappeared?” Eva asks, glancing around.

Which reminds me, Kinky Bat is also female and liable to digivolve into Ladydevimon and eventually Lilithmon or Beelstarrmon or something.
>>
Casey nods, “Yeah! You don’t remember that ‘Fang’ goth chick from last year? Everyone thought she killed herself over a bad grade, but her body was never found. Maybe she’s here somewhere as well? If we never make it home, we could all be urban legends too. The Ghost Summer Class!” She waves her fingers dramatically, laughing to herself, but glancing back, the twins are both hugging themselves tighter.

“I’m sure we can get home in no time.” You assure them. “If we want too, we can make it happen.”

You finally spot the blue of the ocean, squinting into the night, an enormous cable bridge spanning across it towards another island, easily a mile across. “Okay, we’re halfway there.” Gotsumon calls from the back of the car. “ Should we break for the night? Dash is looking kinda beat.”

>“You hear that Casey?” Jeff remarks snidely.
>“Oh shut it, you tub of lard!” She snaps back, Jeff’s face falling as he slinks around the jeep again.
>“These two really don’t get along well.” Casey sighs
Casey confirmed for split-personality disorder.

You grin back at the rock Digimon, “Let’s camp out. And thanks for watching out for me.” He shoots you a rocky smile, before slipping out the back of the car, everyone clambering out to stretch their legs under the bright moonlight.

Nothing but rocks, tiny waist high trees and sand in every direction. The Digimon prove their usefulness quickly, Hagurumon and Gotsumon bashing down some of the trees, DemiDevimon carting it back and Elecmon igniting it with a short burst of electricity, once again causing Eva to jump.

With a decent campfire going, you cook up some of the food you took from Brandom, ending up with a halfway decent steak, the others are all quickly yawning, the girls patting full stomachs, Jeff leaning against a tyre, eyelids drooping, before jerking upright. “We should set a watch!” He announces, slapping the back of his hand into his sisters gut. “Eva, your it.”

She grumbles and groans, but forces herself upright, slapping herself across the face, she shakes herself back to full consciousness and sitting on the hood of the car.

Just as you’re about to get some shut eye, you glance at your phone. Weird how the battery shows no sign of dying after this long. Back home the piece of shit could barely last a day.

You glance up at the blonde sister. “You took the watch without any fuss… Not to be rude, but colour me impressed.”

She glances your way, opens her mouth, then sighs. “Too tired too bitch.” She groans, rubbing at her eyes. “You, look away for a minute.” She orders, craning her arms behind her back, sighing with relief as she unbuckles something.

“So, if you don’t mind me prying, what exactly is this job of yours?” You ask.

She shoots a suspicious glare your way, before examining your face. “You… really don’t recognise me?”

You shrug, “I’ve said it before: Should I?”

Her glare softens. “Whatever.” she cups her chin in both palms, a sudden dazzling smile erasing her usual demeanour as she sits up straighter. “I’m TV’s favourite teen starlet!” She tells you, her voice pitching up, bubbly and lively. “Eva Powers as; Mindy Blanch! The YOLO Effect, only on Channel Nine.” She lets out a girlish giggle, before her face drops and she sags back against the windshield. “If that stupid show didn’t take up so much time, I wouldn’t even have to go to summer school!” She remarks bitterly.

“That’s rough.” You mutter, Elecmon twitching in his sleep by your side.

“I know.” She grouches, tracing her finger across the hood of the car. “You know what’s rougher? Getting chased by a ten foot tall spider.”

You snicker a little. “Is the show as terrible as I’m picturing in my head? It sounds rather… twee.”

She actually cracks a genuine smile over that. “Worse. Ten times over. But, apparently, it’s what I have to do to get my foot in the door. Because child actors always have such LONG and healthy careers.” She flicks her eyes down at her brother, “Our mother is a tad on the… ‘driven’ side.”

You nod, “And the… electricity thing?”

Her face slumps again, “Our dad died in a lightning storm in the backyard… One of us… I don’t remember which, had locked him out in the rain as a joke.” Her mouth twitches a little, neither up or down, just twitching, “We were…. just stupid kids. We didn’t know. He ran under a tree for shelter in the rain. We thought it was the funniest thing in the world, watching him through the door. Until the tree fell over.” She clears her throat, wiping at her eyes, “Whatever, I know it’s stupid. Jeff got over his fear like it was nothing, but here I am, just…” She trails off, dabbing at her eyes with her wrist again, silence flooding the area, save for the odd pop of the fire.

You wince, “Sorry, I asked without thinking.” You glance down at her brother, “But, that kind of stuff stays with you. I’m sure he copes in other ways.”

She grunts noncommittally. “Whatever.” The silence continues for a few moments, before she tilts her head, listening over the noise of the fire. “Do you hear that?” She asks.

You strain your ears, but…. nothing. “What was it.”

She shrugs, “Ah, nothing, just my ears playing tricks on me. Forget I asssssskud.” She trails off in a slur, head thumping back against the windshield, eyes shut, as a fuzzy feeling clouds over your mind.

“Too long, taking too long. Put them to sleep I will, get big pay we will, many digidollars, lining our wallets!” A loud cackle echoes around the camp, as a weird tapir looking thing floats into view. “And the car will go for a lot too, now it’s in working order.”

You struggle against it, but it’s like enormous weights have attached to your arms, leaving you unable to move as the creature rounds on you, “Sleeeeeeep.” It croons, and your eyes shut, metallic boots crunching forwards through the sands, before a dream takes hold of you.
