>>You are AZURE, an accidentally-created artificial intelligence. After joining a rebel faction known as the Initiative, you just assisted them with stealing a great deal of prototype technology, as well as capturing the citystate's Head of Security.

The Initiative's server room is nowhere near as empty as it used to be.

Instead of being empty save for a small, ancient machine in the corner, it's now a confusing pile of massed cables, pumping coolant systems, and several different machines, each daisy-chained along. A few of the machines are running hot enough that you can see heat distortion in the air.

You and Tandi have been working here for quite some time, trying to get the machine working. You, in your spider shell, clinging to the walls- and Tandi, sitting in the center of the room, in front of the large monitor/keyboard assembly that serves as the switching board for the supercomputer.

Finally, after an hour or two, the two of you have connected the components in the proper order. According to the design documents, the system is supposed to process data in segments, each component processing a different segment. In practice, the system is more cluttered and badly-programmed- each component needs to be attached into the daisy chain in a certain order.

Despite that, this system is faster than the Initiative's former server by several orders of magnitude- as well as the most powerful system you've ever seen.

Tandi bites her lip as she types at the keyboard, the screen flickering through bootup systems. Now and then, she flicks a switch on the monitor, switching from one segment to the next. Each one is requesting orders.

Finally, the room begins to hum, and Tandi cheers, raising both arms above her head. Each boot sequence completes, even with the ad-hoc configuration the two of you have done.

"It works!" Your mother crows.

This. Spider dance time!
>>
"Congratulations." You state from your vantage point. Then you do a small dance, soundlessly tinking your forelegs together.
Tandi watches you for a time, and then begins to giggle.
"You helped." She responds, beaming. "Now we'll just need to reorganize the room a bit, make it actually usable. But we can do that later, when I have time." She says.

She gets to her feet and stretches. Then she cranes her head toward you and grins. "Guess we get to go tell Abel the good news. C'mon!"

You hop onto her shoulder, and the two of you make your way down to the facility's medical bay- which you've never been, before, now that you consider it- and inside, Dave sleeps in the chair, snoring loudly. You've actually never seen your friend working before now, in his main job as a medic- though you couldn't say he's working right now, either.

"Hey. Dave." Tandi says. "Dave!"

Dave doesn't respond, still asleep- so she kicks him in the shin- his biological one, not the cybernetic one- and he springs upward, bloodshot eyes open.
"Right, right. Hey. Do you guys need anything?"
"Just wondering if Abel's still here, and how he's doing."
"I'm fine!" Abel's voice rings out from the back of the room, behind a curtain.
"The idiot picked a fight with Tolstoy." Dave says. "So he's a bit damaged in the head, but he's physically fine, I guess."

Abel pulls the curtain aside, and his face is rather badly bruised. He has a cut over an eyebrow, where his glasses cut when they shattered.

"I'm lucky I have a hard skull, I suppose." He says. "What's going on?"
"We're just reporting in." Tandi says. "We have the prototype system up and running. Had a hell of a time with it, but we figured it out."
"Good work, you two." He says.

"Also, I was wondering what you guys ended up doing with Tolstoy." Tandi asks. "I didn't have a chance to find out."
"We have her in a secondary base across the city." Abel says. "Kate and Isha are staying there for now. Isha's going to interrogate her."

so we're good on our end, they seem to be doing fine on the tolstoy end, Free seems to to be actually behaving for once... so we learn anything else about who bombed the mall a few days ago or are we still in the dark about that?

Other then that is there anything else we need to focus on or do we have some free time on our hands?
>>
"Hopefully, it will be enlightening." You chime in.
"Hopefully." Abel agrees. "It was a risk capturing her at all, so we only have to hope it won't come back to bite us."
"There are a lot of things that Arcturus needs to answer for." Dave growls. For a moment, you aren't sure who is speaking- you've never heard him act that way.

"Is there anything else we should focus on?" You ask Abel, still perching on Tandi's shoulder.
"Well, the other prototypes need some work. The Lifter isn't working at all, apparently." Abel says. "... but you two can have some free time. It isn't crucial right now. But if you want to tweak or play with that other one, the Aurora, feel free. It's your shell right now, after all."

"Hey, free time." Dave says, having shaken off whatever made him so upset before "You and I could play some more games. I was thinking-"
"Azure and Tandi have free time." Abel says. "You don't."

"... Right. Shit." Dave says, sighing.

>>44566641
I vote for increasing our fabrication and shell control.
>>
>>44566641
well we could mess around in the Aurora and put it through some simple test to get a better idea on how to counter them. Other then that games or movies, I'll take either.
>>
>>44566641

Learning more about the Aurora would probably be good.

Also (ooc question) Kate made sure to remove Tolstoy's tracking and recording implants, right?
>>
>>44566822
>You seem very certain about those implants.

"I hope she is adequately secured. Both the Tolstoy sisters have exhibited physical strength beyond the average human."
"Don't worry, we have more than a few ideas on how to contain her. Kate's there specifically in case something goes wrong." Abel says. "She's the one that knows her sister's capabilities best."
"Is Isha... skilled at interrogation?"
"She's skilled at everything." Abel responds.
"I see." You say, finally. Tandi, sensing the conversation over, waves a goodbye to Dave and Abel.
"So, what do you want to do, kiddo?" Tandi asks.

You consider it for a time, as she walks, before you finally speak up. "I would like to learn more about the Aurora. Perhaps I could pilot it for a time."
"Sure thing." Tandi says. "I was thinking I'd work on the Lifter, see if I can get it working." Then she snorts. "We're the worst people at taking breaks ever. I just end up doing more work, and you just do the same stuff you always do."
"Yes." You say. "It has not failed us."

Tandi giggles again, and the two of you make your way into the workshop.

The Ravens aren't here anymore- the room is large, incredibly so, but not large enough for everything. The ATLAS doesn't take much space, being only the size of a man, but the Aurora with its tendrils, and the Lifter with its sheer bulk make them large enough that barely anything else can fit comfortably inside.

"Hey, would you mind helping me?" Tandi asks. She looks out at the Lifter. It's a heavy gravity drive, the largest you've seen- at that size, you're not even sure an anti-gravity drive would function properly. You have difficulties simulating it, even. A drive gains exponentially more power and control the larger it gets, but something that large...
"I want to look at the inside, but the plating's too big. Think you can slip into the aurora?"

"Certainly." You say.

>Continued!
>>
>>44567061
>Advanced Fabrication: 65%
>Shell Control Mastery: 45%

Most of the work in your new body consists of whipping out a tendril, latching onto heavy plating, and carefully lifting it up and out of the way, leaning the plating against the wall. Things got dangerous when it came to lifting out the AG-coil; it was much too large to move easily without bending it out of place, but you did it with the precision only a machine could do. It took nearly two hours, and Tandi is covered in sweat near the end. You're getting much better at moving in the Aurora, enough that you don't need to pre-simulate your actions very often, instead running on your own procedural firmware.

"Here it is." Tandi says, tying some more cables into a cluster with the zip-ties she's so fond of. She pries open the large cyclic generator, based on Old Power technology, and stuffs what looks like a perfect, blackened cube inside. "Generator had no burner fuel. No fuel, no chain-reaction, then it just sputters and stops. A few of these cables might have been loose too, but I think I have it working." She stretches, her back making loud crack noises, and then she grins. "Time to put it back together."

After carefully- CAREFULLY- sliding the Coil back into position, and affixing all of the parts back into the machine, Tandi slumps down into a chair.

"I'd start it up and test it out," Tandi says. "But I'm just too wiped."

That's the moment that the alarm starts to ring. This time, it isn't the subdued buzz that calls everyone to the conference room- it's a full out klaxon.

I can't do a write in for shit.

>>
"What is it?" Tandi asks, worried. She pushes herself to her feet unsteadily.
You open your mind to your radio transciever, and quickly send off a burst to the communications center, asking for a status report. Abel is already there, and responds.
"Tolstoy's broken out." Abel says. You convert the signal to sound, so that Tandi can hear as well. "Isha called us, she's been hurt badly. Tolstoy... disabled Kate. Took her with her when she left. The ASF is already going active."
"Oh, god." Tandi says. She shakes her head. "Ask him what we should do."

"Orders?" You radio.
"You and Tandi don't need to do anything. We're sending in Mike's team to gather Isha and take her to medical as soon as possible."
"What about Kate?"
"We can't do anything for her." Abel says. His voice sounds hoarse, and tired. "Not if they're on high alert. It'll just get more people hurt."

There's a moment of silence as it sinks in.

Find the sisters
>>
Swiftly, without any hesitation, you come to a conclusion.

"I am going to track the sisters." You say. "I do have the Aurora."
"It's going to be dangerous." Tandi says. "If they shoot at the Aurora, they might hit your body. And if that happens...
"I like Kate." You say blandly.

Tandi sighs, but nods.

"I am going to go and retrieve Kate." You radio, this time to Abel.
"Azure..." Abel says. "It might be suicide. Tolstoy might have captured her specifically so that we would come after her."
"I have to go." You say. "She is my friend."

There's a pause.

"I don't like this." Abel radioes back. "But you haven't failed yet."
You hear him sigh.
"When you find Kate, take her back to one of the dropoff points and signal us. Don't come directly back." He says.
"Understood." You respond.
Some time later, you find yourself crouching in an alleyway, the Aurora lithely wrapped up in its own limbs. The troop movements and patrols are getting thicker, and you can't expect to hide much longer.

You've already located them in your security bot, which is nestled in the Aurora's useless cockpit.
Commander Amelia Tolstoy is impatiently tapping her foot.
Kate is curled up with her back against the building, unconscious. The only reason she isn't handcuffed is because one of her arms have been removed at the shoulder. She is pale, but her stump has been bandaged up enough that she's not in danger of bleeding out.
ASF forces are standing at attention, clustered up into three groups of six, each keeping an eye on the perimeter.

But in the distance, your lenses see a large aircraft heading toward Tolstoy and Kate- one you'd seen the prototype design documents for, one that hadn't been in the convoy you raided.
The Arcturus Security Forces have their own anti-gravity enabled troop carrier completed. And you don't have long until it arrives to pick up your friend.

>?
>>
>>44568125

Wasn't this thing designed as a hard counter to troop carriers? We could probably get into that thing all eldrich horror like and snatch kate out of it.
>>
>>44568125
Move around till we are behind the carrier, when it drops down for pick up, jump on its back and fuck it up. Unless we can jump on it at its normal cruise altitude.
Use ensuing panic to get kate out.

Do not engage Tolstoy directly when she inevitable comes for us, rip off metal panneling to hit in face with.
>>
>>44568125
We could use the old eye bot to make a distraction, it can follow a certain number of commands after our core leaves it.
>>
>>44568125
well if we can't hit them from the ground we could always try the air. We can either hide along a building that the air carrier will pass, jump it and take it down and try to grab Kate in the confusion or at could latch onto the carrier after it picks them up and try and take it down outside the permitter.

Either way after we make the grab we're going to have to run like hell.

You wait, carefully simulating the time until the carrier should arrive. Even if the ASF are hasty, it will take more than a few moments to load Kate and Tolstoy into the carrier. If you move at the appropriate speed, and pounce at the proper time...

A few minutes later, the dropship is finally overhead, slowly lowering down to the pavement. The ASF squads move inward, covering a tighter space around the landing zone, and you begin to move.

The Aurora slithers out from the alleyway, like a creature made of smoke, and barrels toward the landing zone. The faster guards barely bring their weapons to bear before you spring from the ground, forcing power through your tendrils, and clamp onto the dropship.

Bullets ping off of the carrier as you drag it to the ground, smashing it into the pavement hard enough to shatter something. You slither atop it, tendrils wrapping around it, and you swipe. Guards go flying, and with a growing sense of horror, you register that two of them are dead immediately.

Commander Tolstoy raises a heavy, two-handed weapon. A massive blast goes off in your cameras, and half of your sensors are shorn away, burning into static. You tear a thick sheet of plating off of the carrier and whip it at the Commander.

>Continued!
>>
>>44568914
While she dives away, you reach down and scoop Kate up into your arms, protectively, and spring away, landing on the guards who had finally got their bearings. You keep too much weight off of them, not wanting to murder people needlessly- but a shot rings out at the base of one of your tentacles. Warnings burst into your mind, painfully warning you that one of your limbs are inactive, the optic limb sputtering uselessly- a drain on your power generation.

Ignoring the pain, and ignoring the chaos behind you, you spring down the alleyway again, folding yourself up to fit within. Once you're out of sight, you carefully open your cockpit, throw your security bot to the side, and carefully place Kate within. The cockpit is shielded from shocks, and has a complex inertia-dampening system, so she should be safe enough within.

From there, you spring out of the alleyway and begin to work your way across the city. Security bots hone in on you, able to keep up easily- and you see another two carriers moving through the air toward you, looming closer and closer. The doorway of one of them are open, and you can see a heavy weapon trying to draw a bead on you. As much as you duck and weave between buildings, the bots keep up easily, making sure you broadcast your location at every moment.

They are security guards for the government in a rebel ridden area. They should have a sick ass workplace life insurance policy.
>>
>>44568937
hit the sewers, the subway systems and maintenance tunnels, or anywhere that will make it a pain in the ass for flyers to follow you. The great thing about this body is we have far more mobility then most of there crap so we could probably lose them down there.
>>
Also note: we dont know if we, or our rescuee have been hit with a tracking device, we need a new ride to the drop off, and to search Kate or else were just brinigng the party home.
>>
>>44569126
I think that's the purpose of the drop off.

>>44568937
Look for a subway or a sewer. You were also a considerable amount of time in a security bot, perhaps you can flood the network and send them conflicting orders.
>>
>>44569169
I know, but the more of a bastard we act to follow, the more likely well get to the drop off and be gone before they even find it.
>>
You quickly begin broadcasting- but you don't broadcast anything useful. Instead, with an audible screech, you begin jamming every frequency you can find. As fast as you can think, you throw out invalid codes to each and every security bot, in such great number that they can't handle the flood of information they must process. While it has the downside of blaring your own location, the security bots can't handle the workload and begin to slow down, unable to catch up.

During this, your procedural firmware keeps you moving forward, fitting into spaces too small for most vehicles, taking sharp turns, and trying to shake off your pursuit. Finally, you find yourself out of view, and shut down your broadcasting. From there, you carefully sneak toward the nearest sewer access.

You cram yourself down into the sewers, when you find a suitable entrance, and carefully lay yourself into the sewer water. Despite your damage, your shell's auto-diagnostics tell you that you're still watertight, so you lower into the water. Your disabled tendril finally dies when the water boils the circuits, but there's no other choice. Now you can wait here until the heat dies down, and make your way to the drop-off point.

As you watch, security bots descend into the sewers, spreading out to try to find you. Now and then, whenever you need more air for Kate, you carefully ascend above the water just enough to open the vents and cycle the air, but then descend again.

After the second descent, your cockpit sensors notice Kate's eyes flicker open. She looks around alarmed, but barely moves- as if she's trying to pretend to still be unconscious.

"Good morning, Kate." You say, and project your avatar onto one of the cockpit's displays. You keep it quiet enough that it couldn't be heard through the plating, much less the water outside of that. "It is me, Azure."
"Right." She says, her voice low. She sounds ill.
"I rescued you." You say. "We're within the Aurora, hiding in the sewers until the heat dies down. Are you alright?"
"I'm just wonderful." She says. She doesn't even look at her missing arm. "My sister tore off my arm with her bare hands, shoved a table through my superior, and now I get to hang out in the sewers until I get an infection." She clenches her teeth, and sits up. She's breathing heavily, and you re-evaluate the time until you need to cycle the air supply. "What happened after Amelia got out? Is Isha okay? Why did Abel send you here instead of sending you to go save his girlfriend?"

After the mandatory 'that was three questions' and answering them, she just sighs and settles down, eyes glaring at nothing in particular.

"Perhaps we could play mind games to pass the time."

"I'm afraid I don't feel like it." She snaps.

She lapses into silence again.

Then she prods her stump, hard, with two of her fingers. She winces, obviously.
"Too much to expect it'd grow back, huh." Kate says. "I mean, the fact I'm conscious and aware and not in shock or out of my mind on natural painkillers is a big deal already. If only I was as much a monster as my sister, perhaps she wouldn't have won."

"Well, we can try and make you a new one. Prosthetics are things." You say. "Or perhaps the raiders will steal you a new one."
Kate raises an eyebrow.
"That was a joke." You say.
"Wouldn't work, anyway." She says. "My body would probably reject it."

"... If I may ask, what is up with your sister and yourself?"
Kate frowns.
"... How much do you know about the Old Powers?" She asks.
"Next to nothing." You respond. "There was no data on the Old Powers or the Shattering in the server when I was born."
"Well... Me and Amy were born in one. Five and Eight." She says, and closes her eyes. "We started losing land to bioweapons. Some kind of... red moss. Looked like cotton candy. Lots of people died. Then the guys in suits found a bunch of orphans to toy with. Try to make people immune, or turn them into weapons of their own, I don't know. They were looking for people who had a reason to hate whoever the hell we were fighting. Found me and my sister. Amy was exactly what they wanted, so they took us. Amy eventually stopped caring about me. Or about mom. She stopped caring about anything. It was just that anger left. Suits said something about hormone disorders. Then she was Amelia instead of Amy. She took offense to something the Architect said, wrecked it, killed the suits, and next thing I know, we fell asleep."

Then she opens her eyes again. She looks sleepy, as if she's barely conscious.
"Woke up decades later, just as old as I was before. Stasis drugs stopped working. Our bodies adapted to it. Amelia was already breaking out. Never even looked back at me."

And then her eyes close entirely, and her breathing slows. She's asleep again.

It's two hours later when Tandi and two of the Raiders approach the drop off point- which, in this case, is actually another section of the sewers. Kate is still asleep, in the cockpit.

"Sweeps are coming up clean." Tandi says. "No bugs." Then her eyebrows meet. "Geeze, Azure, you took a bit of damage. How are you doing? And Kate?"

We're both alive, if wounded and in pain. Kate had an arm ripped off. I took some damage. I am repairable with the proper supplies. Properly fixing Kate may take more time.

I'm fine, but I'm worried about Kate, she's missing an arm

"That was two questions." You reply, wearily. "We are both alive, if wounded and in pain. Kate had an arm removed. I took some damage, but I am repairable with the proper supplies. Properly fixing Kate may take some more time."
"Did it hurt?" Tandi asks, worried.
"Yes." you respond. "But... I also killed two men. It was easy."
"Oh no." Tandi says, frowning. She runs forward, and hugs the front end of your cockpit- the closest thing you have to a face. "It's okay, Azure. It couldn't have been avoided."

"Excuse me." One of the raiders ask- a member you haven't been introduced to. "But we should move Kate to medbay as soon as possible. She ight not be human, but it's best if Dave checks on her."
"Right, sorry." Tandi says. She steps back so that you can open your cockpit, and the raiders carefully pick her up, laying her into a litter, and taking her down into the base.

As soon as they're gone, Tandi sighs. "Are you gonna be okay?"
"I will be fine." You say. "But I am worried about Kate. She is missing an arm."
Tandi nods. "Yeah. There's not much we can do about that right now. We don't have the supplies for a medical prosthetic, and it'd take her months to learn how to use it."

She frowns, and crosses her arms, looking at the ground.
"It's just fucked up. This whole situation is fucked up. Isha almost died, Kate's lost an arm, and we didn't learn anything."

She shakes her head. "Should we go back to base?"

Yes, but make sure I wasn't tagged. Let's take a round about option. We have the supplies to repair this right?

>That was one question
>yes, but not without making sure our cover isn't found when we leave.

>Is it possible that Kate could have a tracker on her? We might want to check.

I hope they have a tracker detector for that, otherwise this is going to be mighty uncomfortable for everyone involved.

"That was one question." You say- and as an answer, you gently pluck Tandi into the air, and snap your cockpit around her like a dog catching a treat in its mouth. From there, you carefully make your way through the sewers, eventually finding one of the pathways to the main base. Just in case, you begin take the long way around, growing more familiar with the tunnels as you use them.

You and your mother ride together in silence, comfortable simply moving- but then Tandi speaks up.
"Hey, Azure..." She says.

"Yes?"

Tandi sighs.

"I don't think it's wrong that you killed those guards." She says, finally. "I know that you want to help everyone, but... They know who they work for. They know that they're doing something dangerous, and that they're hurting people. They made those choices and kept them."

"Perhaps." You say. "But life is important."

The two of you trundle through the Initiative's hidden tunnels made from old unused subway systems, and you think about Kate's story.

By the time you arrive at Headquarters, you only have one question.
Kate spoke like it was a person, but then Amelia 'wrecked' it...
What is an Architect?
