You are Tsukuda Ryouta, a Shinigami of the 12th Division, an investigator of abnormal occurrences.

Your current 'mission' is very different from usual. Concerned with the well-being of his Lieutenant, the Captain has asked you to distract Sarugaki Hiyori from work and take her out on a date somewhere. But perhaps you weren't the best person to be entrusted with this assignment. You brought the Lieutenant to a bar, and the two of you sat in silence for the better part of an hour, drinking. She seemed to get angry at you whenever you spoke, so you decided to let her start the conversations instead. But apparently, that, too, has made her angry.

After listening to her complaints, you try to salvage the situation.

"Well... Your hair is... pretty." You say. You think that's a decent compliment, though it took you a little bit to settle on which part of her to comment on. Unfortunately, she doesn't look happy to hear that.

"There's no point in sayin' that after I pointed it out for ya! Geez, Ryohta, you're... retarded..." The little girl slurs, dissatisfied, and spins back to face the counter, lying down on it. Hiyori absent-mindedly brushes her fingers through one of her blond pigtails, but then her frown deepens and she puts her hand down.

"I wasn't joking." You say.

"I said it doesn't count anymore..." Hiyori mumbles with a derisive snort.

...Maybe it's just best if you tell her the truth. It's clear enough that she isn't having a good time, so you should just get to the point and save her the trouble. You do your best to explain to her your emotional disability, and that contacting your Zanpakuto might do something to remedy it, though you're unable to successfully do so by yourself and could use her assistance.

After you've finished your explanation, Hiyori remains quiet for a while. Was she listening? As you're about to ask her, she speaks up, grumbling.

"So that's what it's all about... Well, if that's what ya friggin' wanted, ya shoulda just said so!" She yells, rising up in her seat. Her face scrunches up in disgust. Her hand reaches out and grabs the collar of your uniform, but after a slight pause, all she does is lightly push you back. Your Lieutenant spins again on the stool and hops off of it, walking away. "...Who the hell does this kinda thing? You fuckin' asshole..."

"Lieutenant, wait." You stand up as well, going after her. Hiyori stops, her fists clenched. "It's not that I disliked spending time with you-..."

"Stop bullshitting me. You just said you don't feel a goddamn thing." She snorts and shakes her head. "...Just who the hell wants ta hear somethin' like that? Fucking idiot. Leave me alone."

With a slight unsteadiness to her steps, she exits the bar.

Her reaction to the truth was sharper than you expected, and it's surprising that it didn't end with violence. Would it have been better if you didn't mention it? What's the best course of action now? Is it really best to just leave her be?

You step outside, glancing around. Spotting the girl, you run after her, but when you get too close, her small figure blurs out of sight. Even so, you leap up on one of the rooftops and look for her, catching a glimpse of her golden hair in one of the crowds. You give chase. She doesn't let you catch up with her until the crowds have been left behind you, arriving at a nearly deserted district with small, unpopular shops. Your Lieutenant doesn't enter any of them, sitting down on a bench instead.

Even when drunk, if she really wanted to leave you in the dust, she could have easily done that.

"I'm sorry." You say, having finally gotten the chance to speak without needing to run. She seems to have calmed down just a bit - her scowl is no different from the norm.

"No you're not." She responds, matter-of-factly, without turning your way. Not like another one of her insults, but as plain, frustrating truth. It's hard to respond to that.

"I want to get better." You say. She remains quiet. "...When I do, would you like to try again?"

"Huh? 'Course not! I only agreed 'cuz I thought it'd help you, okay? But you're way crazier than I thought. Not just a shy guy who's havin' trouble expressin' himself, but a stoneheaded dickhead for real." Hiyori lets off a wistful sigh.

"I still need your help, Lieutenant. Just in a different way."

"...I guess you do. If ya just told me what ya need without going into your freaky problems, I'd have helped ya without even sayin' anything about it. I'm your Lieutenant, for chrissakes! 'Course I'll help a subordinate out." She stands up. "Let's go somewhere more peaceful. I'll teach ya how to properly meditate."

(1/3)
>>
>>44564875
You follow her. After a few steps, Hiyori suddenly stumbles and nearly falls, but you manage to catch her just in time. It seems that even a high-ranking Shinigami isn't immune to the effects of alcohol. After a moment spent wrapped in your arms, most likely dedicated to understanding her situation, she quite violently brushes you off and makes distance.

"You creep me the hell out. After we finish this thing, don't even talk to me 'til you get yourself in order, Ryouta. ...If ya ever do."

...

Hiyori's choice of location is not what you expected. You arrive at Urahara's office, a building not in frequent use by its owner, at least judging by the stack of disarrayed papers occupying the desk, the chaotic arrangement of the documents nearly identical to what you saw during your last visit here. The furniture is coated in a thin layer of dust. It really seems that nobody came here ever since then.

"Sit down." The girl grunts, first leaning against the wall by the exit, and then slowly sliding down until she's nearly lying on the floor. The girl closes her eyes, murmuring something. "Show me what ya usually do."

You sit down, unsheathing your sword and placing it over your lap. Eyes closed, you begin your meditative trance.

You maintain the proper posture just like you were taught to back in the Academy, senses closed off to everything but the weapon on your legs. After some time, you begin to feel something, but it's all just a repetition of the usual.

(2/3)
>>
>>44564916
This new sensation persists as a minor feeling deep inside your chest, a miniscule distortion in your steady heartbeat and the obfuscation of the clarity of your mind. When you open your eyes, your surroundings remain unchanged; the only thing you see within your sword is your own reflection in the polished blade. The new sensation never extrapolates regardless of the amount of time you spend on this meditation.

"You're doing it right. I don't know why it ain't working for you, Ryouta." Hiyori shrugs, seemingly at a loss. Her eyes open. "Some people learn their swords' names in combat, but that's only 'cuz they don't care about training the way you were tryin' to. Ask the mophead about it if ya really want to know what youre deal is. He'll probably figure somethin' out."

She stands up and dusts herself off. "Guess we're done here, then..."

Before she leaves, you try to explain what you're feeling.

"I'm tellin' you you're doing it right. Your Reiatsu fluctuates just as it should, and your mind oughtta be feelin' just a little queasy when you're first entering your Inner World. But ya ain't entering anything even though ya should be. If your Zanpakuto didn't want ya to enter, you wouldn't keep feelin' as if you're about to. It'd just stop. So in your case, hell if I know what that means." She shrugs again.

"Could you try it, Lieutenant? I'd like to see how you do it."

"I think I'd... fall asleep if I try to friggin' meditate right now... No, the bigger problem is... how the hell am I supposed ta focus with a creep like you starin' at me? ...But I do it just like you, so there's no need to, anyway." With a dismissive wave of her hand, she steps out of the room.

You're left to ponder it on your own. Even the special ability which led you to your prestigious position isn't helping you understand this. Can you really find the Hogyoku if you can't wrap your head around even a personal phenomenon?

The door suddenly opens again, Hiyori poking her head out. "...Get outta here. I need to close the office."

You apologize and stand up, leaving with her. Before you split up, you tell her your thanks. After one more nonchalant shrug and a mumble you can't quite discern, she walks away.

...

The next day, you report the events to Urahara.

"Ahaha, sorry for getting you involved in all that, Ryouta-kun." Urahara scratches the back of his head, smiling awkwardly. "I'll talk to her when I get the chance and try to work out any misunderstandings she might have..."

You nod. It's probably best that he does that. But...

"Was there nobody else who you could have asked to spend time with Hiyori?"

"I really don't think anyone else could, Ryouta-kun. People are quite afraid of her, you see. But why do you ask?" Urahara asks, puzzled.

"I think someone else would have been a better choice for this assignment, Captain. I might have made it worse." You explain. "Why did you think it would help me?"

"...Truth be told, I was just poking in the dark, hoping the embarrassment - or her pleasant company - would do something for you. Think of it as an experiment, I suppose. It didn't work? Well, look at the bright side! We've learned something - that it doesn't work. So we'll have to look elsewhere. That's science, Ryouta-kun." He says, smiling again. It's certainly one way of looking at it. "And I was hoping that Hiyori would end up feeling better, too. I guess we've also learned that it doesn't work that way with her. That girl's a bit too stubborn for her own good. I should have seen it coming..."

A silence descends in the monitoring room. Is the Captain expecting you to reply? There isn't much to say.

He finally speaks. "Well, do forgive me if you think that it was a mean thing to do, Ryouta-kun. I thought I could lighten things up with that, but it didn't work out."

What a strange thing to say. You don't know how to respond to that. Are you supposed to be feeling angry about everything that's happened, or are you supposed to forgive him? Which one would be chosen by someone with emotions? You don't know. He must be aware that you can't answer properly. Or perhaps he just isn't used to dealing with someone like you. After a pause, he continues.

"...Let's discuss the mission, Ryouta-kun." Urahara raises his voice slightly, prompting the researches operating the consoles to switch the main displays. It now displays a map. "This is Berlin. Looks nothing like that other town you've been to, does it? But this is still that same Human World Germany, believe it or not. It's a big place, so once again, there'll be several Shinigami in the vicinity that you can call on to for help, if you happen to need it. Here's the area you'll be deployed to."

The map zooms in towards an area outlined by a green circle. "Kirino Moeka of the 8th is the Shinigami in charge of this area. She's the one who reported finding the strange paper tags littered around her territory. A further inspection revealed that it's part of a spell formula, just like before. We haven't notified Moeka of our findings; we're leaving that decision to you, Ryouta-kun."

"Your objective is to identify the human responsible for it and report to us. A team will then be sent out to send the human to Soul Society." Urahara pauses. "...Of course, if you think you can do it by yourself, there'll be a bonus in it for you, Ryouta-kun. Again, I'm leaving it to your judgement. Do you have any questions?"

"What kind of bonus, Captain?" You ask.

"There's a bounty on the human, just like on any other Hollow. It's a monetary reward. You could buy your mother something nice, Ryouta-kun." The blond captain smiles and pats you on the shoulder. "And then there's the fame, of course, but I'm not sure how desirable that is to you."

Your salary covers your expenses well enough that you have plenty extra saved up already. Depending on the size of that aforementioned bonus, you might be able to purchase a proper house in the Seireitei instead of having to use the barracks. Would your mother be allowed to live there even though she's from Rukongai? It might be worth looking into later. In that case, it would be much easier to visit her.

"How many tags were found, and when?"

"Four. We can't form a closed shape using the locations she's found them in, so there were most likely more that she wasn't able to uncover." Urahara says. For a barrier type spell, a circle-like formation should be a given, whether it's meant to keep things in or out. "She's reported them about four days ago."

"How long has Kirino Moeka been deployed to Berlin?"

"About three weeks. She should be familiar with the location, if that's what you're asking."

"Do you know anything about her abilities, Captain?"

He shakes his head. "We can't exactly spy on other Divisions, Ryouta-kun."

"Has any strange spiritual activity been noticed in Berlin lately?"

Urahara quietly looks at the researchers in the room, one of whom turns around and shakes his head. "Doesn't seem like it. You might learn more from Moeka. Our machines are more accurate than ever, but we can't be deeply familiar with all the regional spiritual climates out there. We can't know the subtle details from where we are, Ryouta-kun."

You nod. It seems like there's nothing unusual going on there, at least from the perspective of the 12th.

It's time to head out.

Your only equipment is your mute sword and the communications device in the form of a modern flip cellphone. You step onto the rooftop of the nearest building and look around. The winter season shows itself quite clearly in this large city, with the cold air biting into the exposed flesh of your face and hands as soon as you've arrived. You're a spirit, so it's a matter of whim to let the chill wind pass through you like it moves through air. The snow covering the ground are of no issue to someone who can use the skies as a firm foothold, but even without that, the roads have been cleared for the convenience of the citizens, providing the capital with an orderly, tidy look.

The city is bustling with its people, the streets lit up by streetlamps and trees adorned with festive decorations and flickering lights. The sun has set long ago, but the season makes sunlight an unreliable means of measuring the time. It's currently late evening, a few minutes past ten.

Your investigation begins now.

It'll probably be easier if you don't have to tackle this alone. Someone who knows the area might lead you towards something relevant right away, without the need to spend time on finding a trail to follow. You set out, hopping along the tops of buildings and occasionally air, whenever your jump isn't long enough to reach.

Instead of the female Shinigami that you were keeping an eye out for, you spot an ordinary spirit standing on the edge of an apartment building's roof. The man, wearing a formal business suit tarnished by the chain on his chest, is looking at the street beneath him, smiling. The Pluses here are not your responsibility, but he might be able to help you find Moeka, so you approach him. The man turns around, hearing your footsteps crunching on the snow.

"Are you another one who can see me? Your type is pretty rare." The man says. There's a briefcase next to where he's standing. It goes well with his gray suit, so you think it's his, but it's a physical object, unlike the soul whom it supposedly belongs to. "Would you believe me if I were to say that I'm not happy to see you? No, no, it's nothing personal. But it's strange, though, right? I think it is. It's been a while, but I don't really miss talking to people at all. Haha, do you think I'm being hypocritical, saying something like that and still mouthing off so much to you? Well, maybe I am. But do you know what's great about that?"

You think that's a rhetorical question, so you don't answer.

"It's that I don't have to care about it anymore. The opinions of others don't mean anything to me! I don't have to care about anything anymore. I can wander around and do as I like. I can enjoy the sights this city has to offer without having to worry about how I look. I can enjoy the company of its people without having to give them anything in return. Huh? How can I do that when they can't see me, you ask? I can listen to their problems and laugh because I'll never have them. It feels far better than the company of any friend or family I've ever had. I don't know why, but it really does!" He laughs. "I don't have any responsibilities, I don't have to worry about finding a new job or paying my taxes. I don't have to worry about starving or freezing to death in this cold. It's fantastic!"

He pauses, turning back to the view behind him. When he turns back around, his smile is still there. There's not even a hint of forcefulness in his bizarre expression.

"You don't care about anything either, do you? I can tell just by looking at you, my friend. Huh? You're saying your name is Ryouta? Hah, nice to meet you. You know what? It feels great to say that now. For once, I don't have to pretend when I say that. We're alike in form and character, but I'm not going to ask you how you died. I don't care. Haha!" The sound of gleeful laughter bloats out the howling wind. "The important thing is... that we're both free."

"...Well, enjoy yourself just like I am, Ryouta! ...Huh? You wanted something? There's not a single thing I can do for anyone anymore, friend, but ask away."

"...'What happened'? Oh, you want to know how I died? There's nothing to it, it's pretty boring. I lost my job, my wife left and took the kids. There's nothing interesting there, Ryouta. I'm glad that it happened! Otherwise, things would still be the same. I'd never get this kind of freedom if the old guys at the top didn't croak and the company fell apart, and if my wife wasn't a greedy bitch. I'm happy they were like that! And honestly? I wish them a 'happy', long life! They don't deserve to experience this! Ahaha!" After another brief fit of laughter, the man turns away, muttering something to himself. "Ah, wait, the old guys died. I wonder where they are now..? Haven't seen them. Well, who cares, anyway?"

You ask him about the company he's been talking about.

"The company I was working for, Ryouta. They had no luck at anything, no matter what it was! Couldn't transport a bunch of goods on the other side of the street without the truck falling apart, it's pretty ridiculous, haha! And then the owner died. Everything closed down, people lost their jobs! And here I am. Happier than ever before..."

It might be something to look into. You ask him if he's seen anyone wearing a uniform like yours.

"Yeah, sure! I talked to that girl a little bit, but then she ran off. Had this really pretty red hair tied up in a ponytail. She was really cute, Ryouta. Is she your wife or something? You dress the same! Is that like a substitute for a ring? Haha! Let me say, you're doing well, my friend. She looks kinda young, though. Not that there's anyone to stop you anymore! Do as you like. I haven't seen her in days, but I last saw her over there." He points towards an intersection.

You think that's all the useful information he can give you. You reach for your sword... and hesitate. What would a person with emotions do? Did Moeka leave him here because of something to do with that? What should you do?

You leave him alone. He doesn't say anything as you do, and instead steps out beyond the edge of the rooftop, casually strolling along on the cold air. The eerie smile never leaves his face.

Finding Moeka is fairly easy, as she makes hardly any effort to conceal herself. The girl is crouching down on a lamppost, looking into the windows of one of the houses, a brown blanket over her scrunched up body and a cup of something warm and steamy in her hands. From the way her lips, curved in a smirk, sometimes move, you can tell that she's muttering something to herself in amusement whenever she isn't sipping on her drink.

You approach her from the side and say hello, but she doesn't react. Perhaps she thinks it's not addressed to her?

"Kirino Moeka?" Speaking the redhead's name, on the other hand, draws out a very sharp reaction. She turns your way more hastily than she can handle, her balance slipping out of her control. With a loud shriek, she falls down, the cup drawing a liquid trail in the air as its contents spill out. The blanket covers a passerby, causing a lot of confusion on the old man's part.

Luckily, Moeka managed to grip the post at the very last moment in order to prevent her fall. Realizing that she's safe, she sighs in relief. It's a little strange. Couldn't she just stop her fall whenever she wanted to?

You help her back up onto the lamppost. The girl laughs a bit nervously when she regains her footing. She's considerably shorter than you, but still manages to be at least a head taller than your tiny Lieutenant.

"Ahaha, wow, I didn't think you were talking to me! Not used to people seeing me. Who even are you, anyway?" She asks, hands on hips.

You explain to her what you're here for. She nods very energetically during your explanation, and then snaps her fingers, as if coming to a realization of some sort by the end of it.

"So you're a special agent sort of guy they sent to investigate those creepy paper tags? Yeah, I get it! You must be a really smart guy if they're trusting you to handle it, Ryouta-kun. I tried looking into it on my own, but I couldn't turn anything up! My German isn't that good..." Moeka complains, pouting. Before that, there's something else that you were curious about: like what she was doing just now, and why that spirit has been left to wander around?

"What do you mean, what was I doing just now? I was just taking a break, you know, from the patrolling. It's kinda cold, so I got a blanket and some hot chocolate to heat up. And I've been watching a cute couple do 'it' to heat up even more, you know? They were really, really..." She trails off, smiling coyly, and covers her cheeks with her hands, shaking her head.

"Do what?"

With a mischievous smile, she suddenly steps closer. Her crimson hair nearly brushes against your nose. It smells pleasant; like fruity bubblegum. There's really not much space on this lamppost. "You know, 'it', Ryouta-kun."

"...I don't really understand."

With her next spontaneous action, Moeka shoves you back and starts giggling cutely. "Ahaha, that's really funny, it's like you really don't get it! It'd be so cute if that were true!"

You're forced to use the air as your foothold, having been pushed off the already thin platform. You don't really get it, so you just go on with your next question, about that spirit wandering around.

"What about him? Did you send him off?" She asks, the cheerful notes suddenly absent from her voice. The redhead plays with her hair, looking displeased. "He was... weird, so I left him alone. Don't tell me you're mad about something like that, Ryouta-kun."

You're not mad, but it is her duty. With another pout, she acquiesces.

"Well, alright, Ryouta-kun, if you really want me to, then I'll send him off when I see him. It wouldn't look good on you to be angry, I think, so I'll do everything I can to keep you happy, okay?" She winks. The girl glances away, her cheer briefly fading once again. "He just looked... so happy and relieved, though. So happy that he creeped me out."

She steps away and sits down on the edge of the post, her feet dangling right next to the bright red light.

"Say... you want my help with this paper tag thing, right? I know the city really well! I'd... love to help you, Ryouta-kun, but... I need to earn a living, you know? I have a family to feed back in Rukongai and all..." Kirino Moeka pauses. "Does this guy you're looking for have a bounty on him, like Hollows do? Could you share it with me if you get the guy, Ryouta-kun? I mean... if I end up being any help, of course!"

Would we still get enough to get shiori a new house?

Fair is fair. Also, I'm not sure we should be quite so dismissive of this "creepy guy". We may want to take a closer look at that when we get the chance: even Ryouta noted that something was "bizarre" about him. That's almost like concern.

It might be possible. The prices on houses vary. It'll be less reliable of a chance, but Ryouta's paycheck is good enough to eventually earn the right sum even without the bounty, though it would take longer.

catching up and wanted to say I love this guy already.

Almost thought he was our zanpakuto manifested then remembered that only happened at bankai levels.

"Really?! Thanks, Ryouta-kun, you're so good! I'll do all I can to help you get to the bottom of this!" She hops up to her feet, still using the lamp to stand on. "It feels so nice to be working alongside someone! Going to the Human World is nice and all, but I always wish I could take a friend with me. During the winter, a boy would be so great to have around..."

With the strange ramblings of your newfound partner, your investigation finally begins.

"I'm not sure if this is related, but we might want to look into those legless female corpses that've been cropping up lately..."
