Your name is Thomas Cairn, and you were finally starting to get your life figured out. That is, until you managed to blow it all up. You're dad left you a legacy as the Red Rider, and you carry it as the Red Knight, a hero for a modern age. You had your own company, a suit of power armor, an AI assistant, even a girlfriend. You had a great life. Then an unlucky invention put an end to that. It was just supposed to even out some pressure systems, you didn't know it would end up blowing up like Independence Day.

In a flash of blue light, your life was stripped from you, leaving you in a plain room with an intercom blaring. One thing lead to another, and now you are sitting in a lab, your element, apparently saved from certain death by a federal organization. After repairing your formerly maimed legs, you apparently increased your reaction speed massively, the world slowing down in front of you. Maybe you improved on nerves, or maybe you altered your genetics, all you know is that strange things are happening.

You try tossing a few pencils in the air and note that everything seems to be in slow motion, even yourself. Your mind is racing and guiding your hands slowly to each pencil. Of course you catch each one, but the world doesn't speed up afterwards. Your hands seem to start shaking and they feel like they're on fire, while your eyes feel like they've been run through a washing machine. A trickle of blood runs down your nose and a small drop falls from your right eye. Suddenly, the world speeds into a blur of motion and color and whirls around your mind like a top. Then everything goes black.

You don't wake to an intercom like last time though, instead a small shock erupts through your brain and you shoot bolt upright, immediately on the attack. Before you realize what you're doing, you are already on your feet in a judo stance. Instead of seeing anything threatening, you are greeted by a very old man in an eyepatch holding a broken vial.

"Thank the heavens you're awake! I came as quickly as I could." His voice is rough and weathered by age, but holds a sort of vigor that betrays a man of action. Gazing into his one good eye reveals an anticipation, as if expecting something to be said, as if he already knows what he wants to hear.

>A new mechanic has been added in the form of "Reflex", which allows you to initiate your Enhanced Reflexes. It can be trained over time to increase the cap, but it only regenerates at the beginning of an arc, so spend it wisely. The effect of your Enhanced Reflexes allows you to make two actions during combat or tense situations instead of one.

"Who are you?"

"Well, my codename is Odin, my real name is technically classified. Sorry that I couldn't exactly bring the medical staff, they're having a debrief and I'm on watch duty. For a second you looked like someone else, Mr. Cairn, or should I call you Red Knight? Which do you prefer?" He speaks to you in a tone that most people only keep for close friends, and his voice never once dips into a threat.

"How do you know that?!" How could anyone know that you're Red Knight?! You took special care to never get involved with causes that might incriminate you, you even supported fronts for the mafia when you were taking them down!

He smiles and whispers, his voice dripping with conspiracy. "Another classified bit, that's what I do here. I used to go by a different name long ago, but that was another time. I can see everything, like your muscle mass that doesn't match the shape of a millionaire, or the suit in your HQ right now, even the lack of scars across your back. Now, you could simply say that I'm just reciting already obtained data and I looked over you while you were unconcious, but you know that there are stranger things out there." He puts a finger up to his lips to indicate that you shouldn't let on that he told you this.

Odin doesn't seem to have a specific reason to lie to you, maybe it's posturing? Yet in the back of your brain, he seems familiar, and you know that he's telling the truth. Maybe they brainwashed you, or you're under the control of a psychic right now! Pushing away those thoughts, you clear your mind.

"How long was I out?"

"About a half hour."

"How did you get these supposed powers? Magic? Science? Nature?"

"I honestly don't know specifically, forgive my memory." He actually does look confused, but maybe this is an act. He furrows his brow and seems to be grasping for something.

"If you see everything, who's Menace? Where is he? Why haven't you killed him yet?!" He could have saved Jeana! Probably some bullshit about not having a warrant, disobeying orders. You don't care!

"Thomas, you are aware of what Menace can do right? I could see him, but then I'd immediately forget I did. I don't have a clue where he is, who he is, and I don't know. Maybe somebody already has killed him, he's a non-person. I may be able to see everything, but I'm not some sort of omniscient god, despite my codename." He shrugs his shoulders and shakes his head dismissively. That makes a shocking amount of sense.

"Sorry. Who should I talk to about getting out of here, you already know that I've made a full recovery."

"Well, that would be the Commander. He's in a briefing now, but he's normally pretty good about meeting people. I'll send it up to him, don't know why it didn't get to him sooner. Oh wait, Whiteout you weasel. It's practical and is helpful, but fuck you for keeping it from him. Pardon me, just talking to myself before going to beat some sense into a stoneless suit." He seems a bit annoyed, but not angry as he dashes out of the room.

You build a Psy Jammer, maybe Odin can use it to help find Menace. It comes together well enough and fits neatly into another eyepatch you tailored, just because you care about fashion. You could give this to him when he comes back. While you wait, you decide to mess with the idea of Gene Therapy.

You take a sample of your blood, eyes wandering to the ooze that has affectionately been given the nickname "Kludge" by the guards. It looks at you hungrily, despite its lack of eyes, and you walk over to observe. It seems to be shrinking away from the window of the pod as you approach holding a pad of paper. You jot down a note and look back up at the goo. It rockets forward in the pod, startling you into dropping your paper. You jump away as the world goes slow again and explosions rock the corner of the lab as the landmines trigger and the thermite on the pod ignites. You managed to dive away from the blast behind a table and the blaze is too bright to see anything beyond it. Disquieting gurgling noises come from the corner as you see what looks like a flaming sludge mash its way into the floor grates with the petri dish you were testing Gene Therapy on empty atop the same grate.

An alarm starts up and you get a flash of something from someone else. The world explodes into scintillating starbursts of cerulean light as you feel a distant memory pull you back into your mind.

>48 years previous...

You finish writing the note on the thick parchment, a seemingly full recovery of genetic stability. The subject still reports feeling sick, but that's what viruses are supposed to do, It's going to get worse before it gets better. You hook antibiotics into the slurry of chemicals draining into the subjects water and disconnect a malignant green bag from the mix.

You stare into the one-way mirror and see the teen sitting in the corner reading a book. His hair seems to be turning white, but that was always a possible side effect, and the advantages far outweigh the risks. The kid reads one of your old copies of "The Great Gatsby" from the war and you can't help but remember the first time you read it. Your buddy across the pond sent it back and said you had to read it, and you always envied Jay Gatz in a way. Daring to reach for the red light, going beyond who he is to become who he wants to be. The kid probably doesn't realize how appropriate it is considering his situation. You giggle a bit at the irony but the small chuckle rings out like a cacophonous hyena laugh.

You go back to a bank of wires and feel them for slack, proud of the system you installed below the floor to cut the wires and alert you to intruders. The large radio near your desk roars to life with a burst of static.

"The meeting is set Doctor. We will meet at the designated coordinates tomorrow, the money will be there with a squad. Bring the boy." You skip over to the radio and place your finger on the button that activates the mic.

"One Supe in a can coming up!" You giggle into the mic, this is great. You just activated a Superhuman without traumatizing him, at least not obviously.

"Just don't let HIM find out about it."

"Already done, Major Monsterman." The sigh on the other end is like music to your ears. You laugh and the sound echoes around the room. You feel your ears ringing.

You start typing out your monologue for when the Caped Clown comes after you, the charade you put on to this point should be enough to keep him until the exchange is over. Then the museum should serve for the cover that you wanted to steal that shiny centrifuge they got in from the Manhattan Project for viewing. You spitball with Poindexter as you type and end up with a monologue that Poindexter insists harps on your mental superiority in every way to Captain Clueless and portrays you as the handsome genius you are. The clicks of the typewriter fade out as your vision flashes blue, showing a single glimpse of your freeze ray being knocked out of your hands and a large sword rising from a lake of green.

>#&$^*( $%^&#*( sequence over

Your eyes shoot open and a man in a pristine white suit with a badge stands over you. Your face hurts and you notice the man with a hand off to the side.

"Hey asshole, wake up. You've screwed the pooch again, and now we probably have more briefings to go through. Get the fuck up, I don't want a briefing about how not to lose an asset too. The Commander wants you right away." You are suddenly yanked up from the debris of the blast by a large black man in a white trenchcoat. When you say black, you mean skin the color of asphalt.

He looks at you behind sunglasses and grunts. The behemoth pulls you in the direction of the door with your hands behind your back.

Truly, attempting to convince them of our (righteous, benevolent, superior) POV is not going to get us away from these thugs. Action will. And once we've escaped, we can set things right on our own terms.

"If you didn't want there to be an explosion, maybe you shouldn't have placed military-grade explosives everywhere!" You just yell at the room in general as you are led to an elevator with some smooth jazz playing. The man(?) taps his foot to the beat and hums along a bit. The elevator eventually dings as it reaches a floor that has a large mahogany desk with a small woman behind it. There are chairs in it, and it is almost like a waiting room. The woman jots down something behind the desk.

The big guy walks you to a comfy chair and sits you down, then sits down next to you. He taps his foot as he sits, probably just waiting for your turn for whatever. There appears to be an argument going on behind a door, and you recognize the cadence of two of the voices, while a third is unfamiliar. One you pin out as Joe, and he seems to be yelling at the third voice, almost in a way that sounds like a question. Another you recognize as Odin, not asking something angrily, but stating something with the force of will only experience can grant someone. The third voice is definitely male, but it seems to be coupled with a lot of tapping on something metal.

You sit in the chair and listen to the door as the conversation goes on. Eventually, the third voice sighs and the other two continue talking on and off in a calm and an angry tone. It seems that the anger in Joe's voice fades away and the tapping on something metal gets a bit quieter. After some time, you hear what sounds like another door opening and the tapping stops. A sigh emits from the room again and some keyboard noises go on for quite some time, then a ding from behind the desk catches your attention.

"The Commander will see you two now, good luck Blackout." The receptionist presses a button and you hear the door unlock. Blackout nods at the woman and guides you to the door and into the room. The first thing that strikes you is the absurd amounts of military accolades on the walls of the office, and the second is the attire of the man in the chair. He wears a spoof on a general's outfit and has a moustache that seems older than he is. Blackout places you in a black leather chair across from him, pushing you against the glass desk.

"Hello Mr. Cairn. I am the Commander, and you are here because in the admittedly small time that you were here, an abomination has been created and subsequently misplaced. That isn't exactly your fault, as the guards made some huge mistakes in containment, but you must understand how discouraging this is in terms of safety."

"I want to speak to my mother." He looks down at a folder and seems to be contemplating something.

"Mr. Cairn, I am going to warn you that if you aren't prepared for this, you may be further detained for your already egregious crimes involving reckless endangerment. The only thing stopping this now is my trust in you and a thin veneer of operational secrecy involving those offenses. Should you lash out now, I couldn't possibly stop an indictment." He holds out the folder and you notice the tab on it. "The Helios Incident and subsequent events"

"What did I do to engender such... trust?"

"Honestly, I don't give two shits either way, Crack and Odin do. All I know is that you are a threat to mission security when placed anywhere near a lab, and it would do to have you out in the real world instead of here. At least there other organizations can help deal with your messes." That isn't exactly inspiring, but you have no doubts that it's true.

You open up the folder and are immediately greeted by the date that you were at Grandpa's, May 15 2018, with a picture of three blast shadows on the ground with one circled in red labelled "Thomas". The next picture is of you, albeit badly burned and a seperate pile of chunks you assume to be your legs and spine. You flip forward to another picture and see your burned body with what looks like a crude mockery of your original legs stapled on, this one labelled "Post-op, May 20 2018". The next page seems to be a write-up of a small interview with a company you've never heard of called Gray Inc. and references a device known as "The Icebox" as well as a patient who will certainly die in the hands of modern technology. It then goes into detail on the procedure and the end result of what they refer to as "putting him on ice" dated June 13 2018.

Then the papers are spaced out, each page containing the summary of a year of cryogenic stasis. 2018 shows very few medical advances, and each year shows new techniques and technology that are categorized by utility to operation. The pages go onward to 2020, then curiously they continue. 2021 (organ transplants now extremely viable), 2022 (Cardiovascular circulation operation viable), 2023 (Anticoagulant proved ineffective), all the way to 2033 where the single page says "Operation completed December 25 2033, Merry Christmas to Frosty the Snowman."

A single footnote is afforded in the back of the folder, a letter.

"Dear Thomas,
Honey, I can't help this anymore, first James, then Dad and you. I'm sorry. These men in black suits came to me today and asked if I wanted a chance to save my son, the one thing left in my life that I love. They showed you to me in that horrid fridge, and I immediately wondered if you got the quilt I sent you for Christmas the year before you went missing. They said that without me, you would die, medical technology went the way of transplants when you were out. I don't know why. They told me that at that moment you were having blood distributed through external tubes, and your veins were completely clogged. Apparently the blast did it, something to do with exotic matter and gluey bits, I was never good with science terms.

Son, know that even as an old woman, I love you. Please do not make my life be in vein. Sorry, just figured Grandpa would want me to make that joke. And hey, if the last thing I write would have made him happy, that's enough reason to do it for me.

Love,
Janice Cairn

P.S. Please thank Fibin for taking care of your company while you were gone, be polite, don't just do it because I told you."

Agreed, he has every reason to be emotionally unstable. Dead mom, dead gramps, everyone we know is now WAY older and culture/tech on the outside has gone on without us.

We can try and re-assimilate. Or we can hold the world hostage for a comically under-adjusted amount after inflation.
>>
>>44538584
Well, as much as I hate to give away the secret.

PN stood for Pocket Nuke, it was always there, and you didn't die because of it. The second I even hinted at the possibility of a new character for the quest, you all got upset so I decided against it. I offered Paperclips and Superglue as a perk for that purpose, and you decided not to take it. I didn't kill you when for all intents and purposes Thomas should be dead, so Jeana was always going to be the cost for it. I rolled real dice for this and my results were all critical. You got a new power and are now a respected business figure who revolutionized the world, but you also lost in family and medical tech was not conducive to recovery. When I give you good, I give you good. When I give you bad, sometimes I give you good too. I'm sorry this is out of left field, but I'm trying to put my foot down. Tom made a mistake, I didn't kill him, this is the price. Take the good with the bad or don't.

Anons got shafted by something that normally helps them in your quests (abnormally extreme luck). They're reacting to it negatively. It's just to be expected, and since they can't very well blame random chance, they're lashing out at whatever's there.

Don't take it personally.

That said, we're so inventing time travel and fuck what anyone else says.
>>
>>44543846
We critfailed thrice in a row, it was bound to happen.
I just hope we can't actually die as direct consequence of critfails but only of our actions...
Because the odds of critfails in this system are bigger than in a normal d20, so more than 5%
>>
So, new perk ideas.

>Nothing left to lose: Instability can be applied to innovation, but also extends the critfail range by an equal amount. Modifiers cannot save you from a critfail in this case.

>Stone Cold: Instability provides a bonus to combat. However, a crit on either end is more likely to leave behind a corpse.

>Freedom From Thought: Instability is given a permanent reduction at the cost of an equal amount of Innovation. Can be taken again to alter the amount of permanent innovation/instability lost.
Can also be that one can meditate to alter the amount of instability/innovation instead of wasting a plot point on it.

>Thoughts Like Stars, Flying Through Space: Convert a full set of reflex points into 2 plots points or an equal amount of tech points.
>>
>>44543985
>extends the critfail range
Just so you know it is >5% right now. If you go to say 10 as the new range you'll be looking at is higher than 10%.
So it'd be closer to say, rolling a d8 with crits.
>>
>>44544146
High risk, high reward.

It essentially make things 'You will eitther to magnificently, or fail so fucking hard oh my god'
>>
>>44544408
If you don't count the critsuccess cancelling the fail you'll see that with the 1-5 range the odds of a critfail are of slightly over 14% due to the IE principle.
>>
>>44544447
It said modifiers can't save you from a critfail. Not that crit successes wouldn't.
>>
>>44544486
I know, the odds for both critfail and critsuccess are the same.
But they don't cancel out perfectly, I'd need to calculate the intersection of them to tell how many times you'll roll both a critfail and a critsuccess.
I am just pointing out that with the current range and without counting cancelling you'll have odds already worse than a d8.
So it'e not heavy risk it's suicidal.
>>
>>44544587
>>44544486
Nevermind just did.
It could be wrong and I could be talking shit but it hit nearly the d8's prob at aprox 12.8%.
>>
>>44544587
Unless you also make it possible to crit success with modifiers in the same roll. Then instability essentially becomes the risk of crit failing verses the risk of crit successes.
>>
>>44542394

For either* meaning only 3/4 of the tests have normal results.
With the whole thing getting bizarre if you up the range to 1-10 because you'll have odds bordering d5.

The letter begins fading out of focus, then the tears start. First Jeana, now Mom, what did you do to deserve this?! You weep and close the folder, the hot tears streaming down your face like the rain at Dad's funeral. You have nothing, there's no people who you knew who wouldn't have changed after 15 years. You can't go back to the world now, you're obsolete. Just like a 15 year old computer, you've most likely outlived your utility.

"I'm sorry I have to be the one to give this to you Thomas, mostly because I'm bad at that whole... sympathy thing. Here, there's another file, this one will probably make you feel a bit better. A lot happened while you were out." The Commander holds out another folder.

You finish crying for now, and your vision is greeted by the tab "Cairn Industries and the history surrounding it's creator". It's crammed onto there in a miniscule script, but you can make it out. There is a stamp on the face of the folder that says "MISSION CRITICAL". A picture on the front of the folder shows a statue of you, arms outstretched as if presenting the world, surrounded by cars, models of chemicals, a generator, and the poles that broadcast power. Your face looks... proud.

"Why? Why bother bringing me back? Why kill my mother to save me? I'm obsolete. Why bother?"

He looks puzzled for a second, then speaks. "If you could bring Albert Einstein back from the dead, would you? You are what actively pushed technology ahead 10 years at least. Believe me, from a financial point of view killing your mother was the worst possible outcome, we spent a lot of money keeping her as safe from Menace as we could. But you aren't obsolete, you're a founder. There's no doubt in my mind that out there you will continue to accomplish great things, which is why we brought you back." He shrugs a bit, obviously running the risks of this action led him to believe it was necessary.

You open the folder and are greeted by a news article titled "Thomas Cairn, the man from the future?". Apparently your disappearance made many a conspiracy theory (your favorite is the classic frozen head one), but flipping forward you see that eventually your technology was used to rebuild communities after Supers created by the blast destroyed them. At the helm of it all was Fibin, using your fortune to help others, it makes you proud. The statue on the folder apparently stands in Mercury Projects, where a high school is being dedicated in your name next summer. Wireless power ended up revolutionizing electricity, as did Cairnsium. The world is now made of plastic from the abundance of oil, and all the normal fuels are being used in China, a useful alternative to coal.

You find another folder in this one labelled "Effects on Super community". Apparently RON continued running the Super Shop while you were gone, selling the gadgets that you permitted him to, as well as newly made ones from other contributors. Seems you aren't the only millionaire with a habit for supplying vigilantes, as the operation isn't for profit anymore. The lower price range and custom suit tailoring services earned the shop the nickname "The Supe Kitchen", a stupid name, but not a bad thing.

A logbook falls out of the folder as well. You open it up and see that Cairn Industries is now in the Fortune 500 and its total net worth exceeds a trillion dollars, though you can only guess at inflation. Then you see that the amount in stocks that RON has earned exceeds that same number. You would have undoubtably been the richest person on Earth in 2018.

"How can I leave if they think I'm dead?"

"Well, tell the truth. You were visiting your Grandpa when the blast hit, it near-fatally wounded you, you were frozen until science could save you. Not the whole truth mind you, but no need to lie outright. Besides, it's no crazier than people thinking you went back to the future."

"Did nobody connect the dots about my alterego?"

"Superheroes go missing all the time, the fact that twelve went missing at around the same time you did helped."

"Does Menace seem to think I'm dead? If he does, then it might be best if I keep everyone thinking that. Work from behind the scenes, as nefarious as that might sound."

"That's the thing, Menace may actually be dead, or retired, or something. We haven't heard a lick about him in 3 years. Of course, that may mean he's simply waiting, but I have a hunch that he's given up on you. I also get the feeling that you can handle yourself well enough."

"I want a drink. Something strong enough to make me forget I died. Then I'm gonna drunk dial RON. Or Fibin. Whoever. Any objections?"

He sighs and pulls what looks like a bottle made of near transparent glass out of his desk. Some whiskey sloshes around in it. "Here, standard issue for Psy Ops."

The bottle smells like a familiar friend, something that you can feel pulling you back to the events where you-

I don't see why odin doesn't just write down everything he sees while observing the menace, or telling a recorder or someone next to him. After all, the paper, recorder, or second person wouldnt be around the menace or observing him, so it should work just fine as a method. "How interesting, mind if I take a sample?"

"Blood, urine, or semen?" He chuckles a bit. This is getting too annoying

"Commander, get him out of here before I start building WMDs on purpose."

"That's a wonderful idea! Maybe you'd end up making an ice cream machine!" The man begins laughing hysterically, then a few more clones of him flash in and start laughing too, huddling together and holding their faces. The Commander presses a button on his desk and Blackout bursts through the door, points his finger at the men, and shoots a ball of what looks like absolute darkness. The ball hits them and shatters, causing the clones to disappear while the original passes out.

"Sorry about 21, he never was right in the head. Takes a joke too far." Commander talks to you as Blackout hefts 21 over his shoulder and walks out of the room.

You look at the sigil and immediately recognize it from two places. It is the same one as the mark on the ground when Boombox was taken from the expo. This makes you strongly suspect there's an alliance of some kind between Menace, Boombox, and this magician. The symbol is looking very similar to something else, a certain rune that signifies something that escapes you. But the magic going on is most likely linked to a specific person.

Then it clicks, the sigil is a cross between the runes for "Fire", "Death", and "Retribution". There is one magician that you know with the MO of Fire and Death. The Mortician. Somehow he must've come back. This makes your job much harder. Odin gets up and blinks a bit.

"Well, guess this leaves me no choice." Odin pops out his eye, obviously glass at a glance, then takes his eyepatch and moves it to the other eye, revealing a large crystal filling his eye socket. It seems to have a pupil in it, which moves around slowly. "That was the my favorite glass eye. I'm not going to try that again, but thanks for the nifty new patch." He walks out of the office and you hear a gasp from the receptionist. You pick up the eye and pocket it for later. The Commander looks at you.

"Now that that's over, we are going to put you back into the world outside of the base with all your posessions. The base is near Cosmoppolis, feel free to return and ask if you need help. The world is best experienced on one's own, trust me, I know. We will back up your story if need be." "Thank you for helping me."

"You're welcome. Blackout will show you to the exit." The door opens and blackout hands you a bag filled with your wallet, keys, and the various bits and pieces you keep with you often. After changing into something more appropriate than a labcoat and goggles, you fill your pockets with your stuff and follow Blackout to the elevator again. The jazz fills the lift with the sounds of a saxophone and eventually a ding signals a stop.

Blackout leads you through a white hallway to a cargo elevator, then stops. He hands you a small notebook, then he opens his mouth to reveal black teeth.

"Here's everything Whiteout and I found on Menace. MO, build, all we could get from analysis of his footprints. Beat the shit out of him when you find him." He smiles at you.

"Thank you." He nods and hits the button to send the elevator up. You raise up the dark shaft until you reach the top, then it opens up a hatch above you and a ladder falls down. You climb into the light and shut your eyes so as to adjust to the sun. Around you is what looks like a field of corn, but you hear a highway in the distance, which you walk to. A large asphalt highway greets you next to a large wooden sign.

"Welcome to Cosmopolis"

while i'm against you fucking off i just want say we don't have a 1/8 chance of blowing a city off because as much the dice decide things, ultimately the QM is the only one to interpret the meaning of the roll, he is the one who determines what means critfail.
So yes we should be careful, but no we shouldn't be paranoid and stop taking chances.
The lack of a success or a critical success can be as devastating as a critical failure given the right circumstances.
Every situation we roll in isn't born equal otherwise this would just be an overly complicated dice game with fluff.

Yeah over and over because the crits will still be wasted on silly shit if people don't realize that what happened last sessions wasn't bad luck, it was basic math.
Tom's power is great, but also dangerous. So wasting one of the shots at saving lives on what is already a success on a seemingly non-critically important roll is kinda silly.

This is true, but I think coming up with an invention on the run while dealing with a real problem like the one that got us into the future is more worthy of attention than the one we wasted on.
What I'm saying is, we should keep at least one saved until we get into a dire situation instead of just using them willy nilly, specially when your odds are worse/better than in D&D (somehow).

Our disagreements are the reasons we vote.
>What I'm saying is, we should keep at least one saved
i think this course of action is wise from a min-maxing stand point but what's the point of avoiding danger forever, saving crit points is a game breaking system if we use it maliciously to block all crit failures, eventually the QM will fix this holes in the rules to have a critfail if he want one, while you can battle against the odd you can't battle against the narrative of storytelling, we can't have a easy time all the time and I'd rather have it decided by the dice than by ourselves, this way it would be much more fun.

I'm not defending that, and I think some of them have to fly, I mean not even let. They will happen wanting to or not.

>you're still in a D&D mindset
I don't even play D&D, I used the example because crits on D&D are 1/20, or 5%, while our odds are over twice that. What I tried to point out is that while we get - a lot - of power we should try to avoid the more catastrophic failures (even if we can't avoid all) because they will happen very very often.

Immortality is pretty hard to beat, true.
>spoiler
I, what, damn ok that counts. Were you in that thread too?
>>
>>44551629
a higher degree of immortality is most likely invincibility/regeneration.
It could also be reincarnation.
Immortality is being unaffected by the status that is death and there are multiple ways of achieving that in fiction so we can qualify them as degrees i'm pretty sure.

max output no powers would mean not existing since you would literally have the least power over reality that one can reach, not being real.
>>
>>44551704
Reincarnation's shit unless you keep your memories each time.

Ide probably pick being the personification of a part of reality, like death, gravity manipulation, energy conversion, etc.

UNLIMITED POWER!!1!1
>>
>>44551723
it's still technically immortality if death is a status since you don't become dead, you simply become alive again.
Anyway whether reincarnation is immortality or not goes back to the question of whether death is a status or an event.
>>
>>44551758
What if you're so unpowered that you are actually anti-existence?
>>
>>44551758
>unlimited power
Dude, ide spend all day just tinkering and writing stuff down. Literally a career out of your powers, learn something no one else has ever known before and it probably lets you get around to places with little difficulty incase you need a vacation for a while.
>>
Honestly the best power is good luck.
It would be unlucky if it got boring, so it wont
>>
>>44551723
Also wondering about whether it's meaningless or not to reincarnate without keeping memories is a good question, what's the value of reincarnating if you don't stay yourself, it implies somehow it's still you but it's somebody else, it's kind of like the ship of theseus. But if death is merely a status it's technically immortallity since you don't become dead.
The only good point of this would be avoiding death endlessly because it won't be you in future lives, meh it's still a cool power albeit useless if you don't keep data after reincarnated,if you're unaware of it and if you can't tell apart who will be your reincarnation.
>>
>>44551871
You could tattoo an address in your body and if you reencarnate exactly the same, you'll probably go there.
Keep a logbook in there.
>>
>>44551871
>>44551800

It's a cool concept for a story, where the past lives could be somehow accessed, but in real life where it's a whole new brain and shit, it's a super useless power.
>>
>>44551903
>>44551927
but here's the big question , why would you assume you past yourself is helping you even from his grave?
Also why would you help your reincarnated self if he isn't you and hasn't got any of your past memories?
>>
>>44551948
To keep on my legacy? I dunno. Seems like a fun plot, if he keeps the same soul and personality even without memories.

Also
>best real life power
Would be BEING THE GODDAMN BATMAN
>>
>>44551948
It's a roundabout way of suicide. I would set traps for my future incarnations to see just how many of myself I could kill. Maybe I would one day be reincarnated as someone successful. Then they die to my traps. Like Saw where only myself dies.
>>
>>44551997
I'd watch it

>>44551997
I think we've entered a deep concept, in the end the only thing that would cause you to distrust your other selves would be difference in life experience and in the end it would be fun to see how each reincarnation would try to interact with their kind and themselves, but heres a bigger question.
What if reincarnation went through time, in the end it wouldn't matter right? if you started being A dude in 2016 if you don't get to keep memories and end up being a dude in the 90s in the next reincarnation. But what if multiple reincarnation exist in the same time frame?
even more crazy what if every or a lot of human are a reincarnation of yourself?

mistake one person for another and bam, you're doing someone's ass and they seem ok with it at first, but then they freak out when they realize you aren't who they thought you were either.
and you never speak of it again because of the crippling shame and the fact it'd ruin family gatherings
