You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!

"You never fail to surprise me." Sawyer sighs.

Currently, you were back at the Tilean army's forward HQ, just outside Reikland's capital. Things were start to get very hectic, with a massive buildup of forces and vehicles, getting ready for the final push. You could also see the Bretons rallying together their available forces as well. However, you had to deal with a completely different problem.

Namely, how exactly to deal with Hess, who was not sitting in Sawyer's command tent, handcuffed and just sitting casually on a chair, swinging her legs back and forth like an impatient child.

"You bring her back as a prisoner, but you don't want to hand her over to Command." Sawyer shakes his head. "What are you aiming at here?"

Behind you, the rest of your platoon shifts nervously, but you know Sawyer's questions were focused on you.

Bretons are going to try and have her executed and it's an important tactical asset to have her here.

"To tell the truth, sir." You shift nervously. "I believe she'd be better use to us here. She knows how the Tiger works better than anybody here."

"Mhm." Sawyer nods absentmindedly, giving you a suspicious eye, as if expecting more.

"And uh, I don't believe she'd be treated fairly if we transferred her, to either Command or the Bretons." You finish.

"Hmph, I suppose that's sound reasoning. Command is satisfied enough that an intact Tiger's been recovered. Reports from their performance at the Iron Foundry has got them shitting their pants."

"Mmmmm, yes, the finest in our country's engineering!" Hess chimes in.

"Pipe down, you. We haven't figured out what to do with you just yet." Sawyer snaps before turning back to you. "If it were up to me, I'd toss her in the brig the first chance I get. But, she's got valuable knowledge and skills that would be wasted in a cell."

"I think she'd do the best with Egan's team. They could really use her insight on the Tiger analysis." You suggest.

"Hmmmm." Sawyer gives Hess a suspicious look. Hess just responds with a cheerful smile, probably in an attempt to disarm him.

It doesn't work.

"All right, I'll allow it, but I'm putting a guard detail on her 24/7. She tries anything fun, and they shoot to kill. Is that clear?"

"Yes sir." You nod.

"Jawohl!" Hess tries to salute but remembers she's still handcuffed.

"What about her identity? Couldn't that be a problem?" Tarin speaks up calmly.

"We've already considered that." Sawyer nods. "With Parker's help, we've already created temporary papers to grant her a false identity. At least until this war is over."

"Thank you, sir." You nod.

"Vhat?! But my name from a long and proud line of-" Hess starts, but is immediately silenced by a glare from Sawyer. "O-okay..."

"Anyways." Sawyer coughs. "Still plenty to do. We're going to start the final push soon, so you better get prepared."

"It's been a hectic mission, sir. We'd just like to return to barracks and get some rest." You say.

"Fair enough. You earned it." Sawyer nods. "I'll have some guards escort Hess to the lab, then. All of you are dismissed."

You and the rest of the platoon file out of the command tent and make your way back to the barracks, which were some re-purposed apartments. Most of the original inhabitants had already fled, so there wasn't much use leaving such buildings empty.

"Sooooooo." Rock slides in next to you and nudges you in the side with his elbow. "Makin' some moves on that Hess, eh?"

"What?" You blink. "No!"

"Really?" The knowing smirk on Rock's face grows wider. "You're going through an awful lot of trouble to make sure she's okay!"

"Yeah, that's kinda suspicious." Axel frowns as he takes up a position on your opposite side. "What's your angle here?"

"There is no angle!" You insist.

"L-leave him alone, Axel!" Alfie whimpers as she tugs at her brother's arm.

All the while, you could feel Tarin's eyes boring into the back of your head.

"Tarin! Smokescreen!" You yelp loudly.

"Roger." Tarin says as she unclips a smoke grenade. Normally stored in Clementine to mark visually mark targets, Tarin had always had the habit of carrying at least one around at all times. For situations like this. Well, maybe not EXACTLY like this, but similar!

The grenade explodes with a soft WHUMP, shrouding the surrounding area in a thick cloud of smoke. With your platoon momentarily distracted by the blinding explosion, you duck down and scramble away from the commotion. You manage to find refuge in a nearby alleyway, with Tarin close behind.

"You know, you could have actually TALKED to them." Tarin points out as you lean against the wall to catch your breath.

"Heh, and where would the fun be in that?" You grin. "Let 'em stew."

"It's your reputation on the line." Tarin rolls her eyes.

You kind of get the feeling Tarin was annoyed over something.

"Yes, let's." Tarin grumbles.

Okay, it looks like Tarin is in need of a major mood lightener, and you couldn't exactly go to the barracks, where you'd have to face the rest of the platoon again. You'd have to go somewhere else.

"Come on, let's go see how Clementine's doing." You say.

"Hmmm, okay." Tarin nods.

The two of you head over to the motor pool, where Clementine was being serviced. Even though she didn't suffer any significant damage from the battle with Hess, your VT did have to push its engine rather hard, putting a lot of extra stress on it. You note that the mechanics are slowly and carefully removing the engine block to swap it out with a fresh one.

"Geez, we really went all out, didn't we?" You frown.

"Yeah, that engine could only take so much." Tarin sighs. "It'll take a while to get fully fixed.

However, something that seemed to catch your eye was a large tarp hung across one end of the garage, completely obscuring the area from sight. You raise an eyebrow. It couldn't possibly be the Tiger, since it had been transported to the lab. What could they possibly be doing there?

"Come on, let's check if the interior is fine." You say to Tarin.

"Right." Tarin nods.

The two of you climb up to the hatch and drop in. None of the mechanics bat an eye, though. Considering you're the crew, they don't really see any reason to bother you, and they're pretty busy themselves. You slide in and settle in the commander's chair, while Tarin takes position in the driver's seat.

"Well, everything looks fine." Tarin says as she visually checks all of the controls.

That's when you decide to make your move.

"So do you see anything on your end-mmph!" Tarin's eyes widen in surprise when you lean forward and kiss her.

"Still jealous?" You grin.

That's when Tarin pushes you against the back of your seat, a look in her eyes that you've never seen before.

"Not anymore." She says simply.

"Hey, leave it to me, don't worry about it." You chuckle as you pat Axel on the back. "I know pretty much all the Breton guys, so it'll be simple for me to track her down."

"Thanks man, I knew I could count on you." Axel smiles as he returns the favor and slaps you on the back.

You quickly wolf down your breakfast and prepare to leave for the Breton section of the camp. You're quickly joined by Tarin, who slides into her regular position behind you, almost completely unseen.

"I'm surprised you can still walk normally." You grin to her.

"I should say the same thing to you." Tarin calmly retorts.

"Hah, I guess you've got a point there." You chuckle as you subtly hold her hand.

The moment is sweet, but short, as you quickly enter the Breton side of the camp and you quickly let go in order to avoid giving yourself away.

"So what are we doing here?" Tarin asks.

"Oh, we need to find Alfie. I think she's been meeting Willem on the down low." You remark.

"Ah, I see." Tarin says simply.

"Anyways, keep close eye out." You instruct, scanning the crowds of knights and squires. "She can be anywhere-"

Alfie doesn't even notice you and Tarin tailing her. You follow her winding path as she heads for a cluster of tents, their allegiance clear when you see the royal crest of Artois' family emblazoned everywhere.

Yep, pretty obvious where she was headed.

Alfie nervously walks over to one of the smaller tents, the ones that were used for squires and other lower class members of royal households. She pauses for a second, looking side to side suspiciously before finally lifting the flap and ducking inside.

"Lost visual." Tarin frowns. "Should we go in?"

You silently motion for Tarin to follow you as you carefully take position at the back of the tent, leaning your ear in as close to the tent wall as possible. You can just barely hear what Alfie and Willem are saying to each other.

"Y-you're okay, right?" You hear Alfie whimper.

"Of course I am, it was just a simple scouting mission!" Willem chuckles. "We were just probing their defenses."

"I heard you just stood in front of them and challenged them to a duel!" Alfie whines.

"Well, we had to see what kind of champions they would send! To test their mettle!" Willem responds happily. "The cowards didn't even send anybody out! Just fired a few of their pitifully weak artillery shells!"

"Idiot!" You hear fists weakly pounding against as chest. "W-what happens if they hit you? O-or if they really did send somebody out that you couldn't handle?"

"Well then, I'd die fighting valia-"

"IDIOT!" You hear Alfie's punches grow louder and more constant. "D-d-d-o you think that's what I want?!"

"Well-"

At this point, you noticed you were getting some suspicious looks from Artois' camp guards.

You next head over to the lab to see if Egan's learned anything new from Hess and the captured Tiger. Both you and Tarin enter the secure warehouse that has been converted into an impromptu research lab. Inside, you immediately see Hess' Tiger, or at least what's left of it. The poor Vertical Tank has literally been taken completely apart, each individual piece laid down on the floor in an exact pattern.

"Mein gott, my poor VT!" Hess sighs as she looks on, now clad in a lab coat, similar to Egan.

"Oh, hey there, Hess." You greet her.

"Hi." Tarin gives a little wave.

Hess' eye brightens at the sight of you, but then narrows as it darts back and forth between you and Tarin, as if she senses a change in your relationship. Whether she figured it our or not, you don't know, as she quickly shakes it off.

"Roy, it iz good to see you here!" Hess hugs you. You see Tarin flinch slightly, but she otherwise does nothing else.

"Oh, Roy, Tarin, good to see you." Egan walks in with at typically bored looking expression on her face. "Just in time."

"In time for what?" You ask curiously.

"Well, from analyzing this Tiger," Egan points to the disassembled vehicle, "and from your new addition's input, we've been able to put the finishing touches on our own heavy VT."

"Our own heavy VT?" You gasp.

"That's right." Egan nods. "Actually, we had it in development for years, but never made any serious progress because we felt there was no need for it. The introduction of the Panther and the Tiger changed that, though."

Ah, maybe that's what you say in the motor pool, then.

"The Badger is the pinnacle of our Vertical Tank technology." Egan continues. "Heavy armor, advanced propulsion, and topped off by a 90mm cannon, even more powerful than the 88mm on the Tiger."

"Hmph. I'd like to see that." You hear Hess harumph.

"So can we give it a test drive?" Tarin asks.

"You two were the first that came to mind." Egan says. "Sawyer signed off on it, too."

"I dunno..." You bite you lip. "I'm kinda used to Clementine..."

"How about one test drive?" Egan asks. "It couldn't hurt."

"Sure, let's test drive it." You say. "Put it through it's paces! I'm sure you want to give it a try, right Tarin?"

"Never drove a heavy VT before." Tarin nods.

"Excellent, let's get it started right away." Egan says as she pulls a curtain aside, revealing a massive, green armored beast.

The Badger was just about as tall as the Wolverine, but of course, it was much, much wider, at least twice the length. Like the Tiger, it was a quadruped, with thick armor stacked over the four legs and the main body. Nestled on top was a angular turret with a massive 90mm cannon protruding from it.

"Hot damn." You gasp.

"It's certainly big." Tarin nods.

"Hmph, not as big as the Tiger." Hess huffs.

You and Tarin shimmy into the hatches. You settle into the commander seat and Tarin into the driver seat as always. However, you notice an extra seat in the compartment.

"Hey, Egan, why's there a third seat?" You ask curiously.

"Ah, well, we weren't quite sure of the minimum crew requirement for a heavy VT, so we provided space for a third crewman just in case." Egan explains. "Completely optional."

"I see." You nod. "Tarin, you got it?"

"Yeah." Tarin nods. "I think I can do this."

"We specifically kept the controls as close to that of the Wolverine as possible, for ease of use, of course." Egan adds.

"All right, let's take her for a spin, Tarin." You say. "Let's go!"

Tarin turns on the engine, and the Badger roars to life, its engine giving a much deeper and louder growl than the Wolverine. The Badger stomps forward, and you can already tell that its much heavier and slower than a Wolverine. The Badger wouldn't be able to sprint or fit into tight spaces, but you were sure the 90mm cannon would be able to knock out anything the Reiks could throw at you.

"So how do you feel about it?" You ask Tarin.

"Big. Slow. Feels like driving a rock." Tarin remarks. "I'm sure protection will be a lot better, though."

"Is she a keeper?"

"That's up to you." Tarin shrugs. "You're the commander."

"Yeah, I'm getting that feeling too." Tarin nods. "This Badger will give us a serious leg up on the Reiks."

"You hear that, Egan? We'll keep it." You announce to her.

"Good to hear." Egan nods. "Me and my team will make the final touchups. I'll let Sawyer know, too. He'll want to talk to you."

You look at Tarin curiously. What could Sawyer possibly want from you?

>>
>>44540494
No, the waifufags ruin just as much. Moreso, even - this is a Merc quest, after all. Look at what happened in the past.
>>
>>44540542
Waifufags have never ruined Merc's quests, no matter how much some waifufags who were angry at having lost their particular waifuwar will claim otherwise.
>>
>>44540592
This guy gets it. /tg/ is filled with people who get so asshurt over which animes in their quests they get to have someone else write for them exactly how they bump uglies, they troll a QM about it literally years after the fact.
>>
>>44540592
The fact that there even was a waifwar in the first place has arguably ruined many quests.

Go look at how waifuwars dragged Princess Guard into the shitter, for example.
>>
>>44540627
Somewhere in the world, someone is still mad about Falynn, and they are reading this thread right now despite repeatedly claiming they hate Merc and his quests for "pandering to waifufags".

Somewhere in the world, someone still believes in Trude Pride Worldwide.

Somewhere, somehow, someone is mad about not having the waifu they wanted in a quest, and they will post about it, alone.
>>
>>44540662
Princess Guard quest went to shit well before any waifuwars did serious harm.
>>
>>44540684
Confirmed for not having actually read PGQ

The Waifuwars were there pretty goddamn early on. They didn't just magically start when Luci showed up, despite what some like to pretend.
>>
>>44540696
Confirmed for angry waifufag. What really killed interest in that quest was a duel we were forced to lose after an extended period of time and our rival was essentially given hax just to be able to win even when he was being beaten handily in just about every way that matters.
>>
>>44540713
The waifuwars started *well* before the duel, you know. And were poisoning choices from damn near the moment there was more than one girl introduced.

Why would I be angry? The partner I voted for won.
>>
>>44540725
That you are complaining about people posting for waifus other than your own, and claiming that they "poisoned" a quest before the actual event that killed the most interest in it says a lot about how angry you are about this.
>>
>>44540738
...No, I'm complaining that the "war" was even a thing; that it became so toxic in the first place. I'm not angry in the slightest at the fact that there were romance choices or anything.

You, on the other hand, seem to be projecting a great deal about what went on.
>>
>>44540773
Honestly, haremfags probably made it more toxic than anything else. They like to claim it makes everyone happy when it does anything but.
>>
>>44540773
>You, on the other hand, seem to be projecting a great deal about what went on.
>*can only project their own opinions about what happened in that quest as fact, ignoring the actual event that really harmed the quest beyond what any waifuposting did*
>>
>>44540787
Apart from a theoretical Nico/Meido harem", which IIRC was shut down by choices before anyone knew it existed, there wasn't a harem option in the first place.

>>44540801
>*can only project their own opinions about what happened in that quest as fact
What an astonishingly accurate summary of your own posts. Impressive.
>>
>>44540814
Yes, waifuwars killed interest in PGC, not the duel that people raged about for months afterwards, in the actual threads themselves and in QTG.

In other news, you are an idiot.
>>
>>44540846
You'll note there was a sharper downturn in participation after the routelock, rather than the duel shitstorm.

Speaks volumes, really, about what the *actual* driving force was in that quest.
>>
>>44540846
Not to mention the actual harrassment Archelon endured for it. I would stop QMing in his shoes.
>>
>>44540870
Routelocks cause sharp downturns in pretty much every quest. Haremfags quit, because they don't get everyone, in addition to waifufags for simply not getting the girl they wanted.

Basically, it's best to routelock earlier rather than later, because no matter what happens you're going to lose a large chunk of "readers" no matter what, you may as well get it out of the way as quick as you can.
>>
>>44540896
SW89 gave folks the harrm end and basically lost most of its readership before the next session. The drop in participation was honestly depressing to see.
>>
>>44540896
Indeed.

On the *other* hand, there are QMs like planefag who actively harvest the waifwars for the salty, salty anon tears, so there's that too.
>>
>>44540916
And this is why haremfags are shittier than the average waifufag by far.
>>
>>44540919
>planefag

This hilarious because he's not only driving off readers, but his own writefags and drawfags. Did you see the shitstorm in his last thread? Entirely deserved.
>>
>>44540935
Not really? After the hullabaloo died down it came out that apart from the writefag who stormed off in the thread (which was seemingly caused by some set of trust issues/triggers from his military service), the only drawfag who'd actually left had done so months and months ago for entirely unrelated reasons. Noone had actually been driven off by PF's salt-mining.

Also, given he's still pumping through two threads a session and still getting astronomical post counts, I think the available evidence disagrees that he's somehow "driving off readers". Making then apoplectic with rage, perhaps, but they keep coming back for more by all indications anyway.
