You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

Today was, rather different. Instead of sitting in the normal briefing room in Pearl Harbor, you were instead sitting in a much smaller briefing room aboard one of the Navy's amphibious assault ships. From what Portland had told you, it was the USS Tarawa, brought out of retirement at the start of hostilities and hastily refitted to become a mobile shipgirl carrier, it's hangar and transport facilities replaced with Rig storage and maintenance facilities. You kind of vaguely wondered what Tarawa herself felt about all this, but even as a shipgirl, you couldn't really communicate with "normal" ships.

"Hoel, are you paying attention?" The Captain snaps.

"U-uh yeah! I totally am!" You say quickly.

"I'm sure you were." The Captain nods, obviously not convinced. Johnston and Heerman snicker while Portland rolls her eyes. San Diego shakes her head and White Plains gives a sympathetic look. "All right, let's begin this from the top. The main fleet is making steady progress towards Kauo. However, new issues have come to light."

The Captain activates the portable projector and shows an overhead map the seas around Hawaii. There were a multitude of blue arrows pointing towards the small island of Kauo, signifying major fleet movements. However, a smaller blue arrow snaked down south, towards what looked to be a small atoll.

"Our main forces are attempting to completely encircle the Abyssal base at Kauo and cut it off from Midway, but all attempts to close the net have been hampered by these."

The Captain switches to the next slide, which shows a bunch of ugly little Abyssals, that looked like babies with oversized black skulls and lugging a pair of massive torpedo tubes. Something about them made you instinctively sick to your stomach, moreso than the fish and other humanoid versions of Abyssals.

"This new strain of Abyssal, some sort of equivalent to PT boats, has been appearing in large numbers, conducting hit and run torpedo attacks on our ships. We've already had several ships and shipgirls heavily damaged, and we cannot afford to have them hounding our flank. This is where you come in."

The slide then switches to a zoomed in view of the atoll, which looked to be a large cluster of small islands.

"Intel believes these Abysal PT boats are operating out of this atoll. Satellite scans don't show any fixed facilities, so there's a possibility that they're operating out of a mobile facility or vessel. It will be your job to find it and eliminate it."

"Wouldn't the Science Team want to bring the new strains in intact for study?" Portland asks.

"It's not a requirement, but Vahlen certainly would like additional research material." The Captain nods.

"I guess I'll keep that in mind." You nod somewhat reluctantly. "So, are we just going to be ranging out on our own?"

"No, you'll have some support on this mission." The Captain says. "It's rather limited, because the bulk of our resources being focused on encircling Kauo. No air cover, but with the sinking of that carrier group I don't expect you to run into any enemy air power."

"So we just have surface support?" Heerman asks. "What kind?"

"Two Littoral Combat Ships, the Freedom and Little Rock." The Captain says. "Considering the nature of the threat, we feel the LCSes will provide the most effective form of support for you."

"Anything helps, I guess." You shrug.

"And besides me, what kind of air support can we expect?" White Plains raises her hand.

"Both the Freedom and Little Rock have their own aviation facilities." The Captain explains. "You'll have two helicopters that can assist in reconnaissance and air support."

"So how do we approach the atoll then?" Portland asks, looking at the map. "Do we just sail right in guns blazing, or do we go in gradually from the edges and pick them off little by little?"

"Honestly, that is up to you." The Captain replies. "We don't believe these PT Boats are heavily armed or armored. In fact, we believe they're more fragile than the standard destroyers we have faced up until now."

"Hmmm." Portland frowns, obviously trying to come up with a deployment plan.

"How about we-" You start.

"Oh no, we're going to be doing this by the book." Portland grunts. "We're going to secure the perimeter and draw them out little by little."

"But I was about to say that!" You pout.

"Sure you were." Portland huffs, not convinced.

Ohhhhh ,you were gonna get back at her for that after this. You had to remember.

Suddenly, a loud siren blares for a few seconds, ringing throughout the bowels of the Tarawa. The Captain raises his head up briefly and looks at all of you again.

"It appears we've arrived at our deployment point." He announces. "Head down t the well deck and prepare to launch. Dismissed."

You and the rest of your task force members instinctively stand up and salute the Captain before marching out. Fortunately, Portland had made sure you all knew how to get to the well deck, probably so you wouldn't embarrass yourselves in front of the crew. She always did seem like a stickler for appearances. Launching from the well deck was simple enough. It wasn't much different than from just summoning your rigs and stepping onto the water. The Tarawa's forward movement did the rest and soon enough you were out in the open air, the sun shining in your face. Behind you, you could see the stern of the Tarawa and that of its sole escort, the O'Kane. Trailing behind the Tarawa were the two LCS ships, Freedom and Little Rock. Somehow, they looked even smaller in real life than in the picture.

"Is that... a 57mm cannon?" Johnston frowns in obvious disgust.

"Looks like it." Heerman shrugs.

"Hey now, cannons aren't everything." White Plains adds in.

"Says the carrier that oneshotted a goddamn cruiser with one!" Johnston rolls her eyes.

"Please, the LCS has a very specific role and it's armed as such." Portland grumbles as she catches up with you. "Especially when they're equipped with the surface warfare package."

"Taffy 3, this is Freedom." One of the LCSes radios in. "Your Captain has given us the mission details We'll be taking up positions on the outer edge of the islands. Who will be drawing out the hostiles?"

"Heh, we can do it." You tell Portland. "Us destroyers are smaller and faster. Better able to dodge torpedoes."

"That's true, but..." Portland frowns. "The PT Boats have traditionally only targeted larger capital ships. I think we can guarantee to draw more of them out if I went out there. They wouldn't be able to resist a heavy cruiser."

"That's crazy. No way you'll be agile enough to avoid a mass torpedo attack!" San Diego says with concern.

"Heh, I'm no stranger to surviving torpedo attacks." Portland points out.

"What about the LCSes?" White Plains suggests. "I heard they can hit 40 knots, and their radars and detection capabilities are for sure better than ours."

"Well, that sounds like a great plan and all, Sweet Pea, but..." You suddenly shove Portland and fire up your boilers, shooting off towards the atoll. Johnston and Heerman, correctly predicting your course of action, follow close behind. "If there's anybody that's gonna get shot at, it's gonna be us!"

"You goddamn glory hogs-!" Portland seethes, but it's already too late for her to stop you.

"Woooo! You showed her!" Johnston whoops as ocean spray splashes all over you three.

"Honestly, a heavy cruiser acting as bait? That's just crazy," Heerman shakes her head.

"Heh, I think she just wants to prove something to the Admiral~." You say teasingly.

"YOU'RE STILL TRANSMITTING." Portland growls over the radio.

"I know, Sweet Pea." You cackle playfully. A quick pulse of your radar shows the the rest of the task force, as well as Freedom and Little Rock, holding position behind you. You don't see any indication of enemies yet.

"Do you need air cover?" White Plains asks. "They can really help out."

"We could use an extra set of eyes..." Heerman starts.

You focus your radar on the atoll. Normally, on the open seas, it wouldn't be much of a problem since everything was flat and easy to see. However, with the atoll, the numerous small islands served as obstacles, directly blocking your radar from getting a good read of the situation.

Suddenly, you can sense a... blob. A big blip on your radar heading out of the atoll and into open water, and moving FAST.

"Hey, I'm picking up a large contact coming out of the atoll." You radio. "Anybody have eyes on it?"

"I see it!" White Plains responds. "Looks like, ten PT boats, fully loaded and heading out at full speed!"

"That's not a lot..." Portland mumbles.

"Maybe it's just a probing force?" San Diego suggests.

"Hoel, can you and your sisters engage that group on your own?" Portland asks reluctantly. "I don't want to give away the full extent of our firepower if we can help it."

"Of course we can!" You say confidently. "Just watch!"

You, Johnston, and Heerman blaze forward, guns raised and ready to fire. You quickly get a better view of the PT boats, and decide that they're much more unnerving and ugly in motion than in the picture. They don't really skate as much as dance and waddle over the water, as if they really were newborns. However, before you can get an accurate firing solution, the PT boats appear to see you approach and fire off their torpedoes in a wide spread. You scowl. The PT boats were already turning around to flee back into the relative safety of the atoll. If you maneuvered to dodge the spread, you were certain to lose them. Then again, with their torpedoes expended, it would certainly take them out of the fight until they could be reloaded...

You could count almost 20 torpedo wakes headed towards you. Fortunately, they were spread out enough to try and ensure a hit, but the good thing about being a shipgirl was that you were a MUCH smaller target than you used to be, so it would be much easier to slip through the gaps in the torpedoes. However, the problem was that it was still pretty dangerous, especially if said torpedoes had magnetic detonators...

>FATE POINT gained!
>You now have 1 point!

Sailing through the gap was easy as pie. The two torpedoes on either side of you hiss loudly as they pass by harmlessly, thankfully not exploding right under you. That would have REALLY sucked. With the immediate danger gone, you sight in on the PT boat pack with your 5 inch guns and fire away. Similar booms from your flanks indicate that Johnston and Heerman have also begun firing, and the effect is immediate and brutal.

One of the PT boats explodes in a cloud of oilblood when it eats a direct hit, showing black goo and gore all over the water. A second and third are quickly blown in half from just grazing hits, shorn off limbs flying in all directions with their only armored part, their giant, oversized heads, dropping uselessly into the water. You take out a fourth with another direct hit, punching its big black head clear off and leaving the body thrashing and twitching wildly on the water's surface. Johnston scores another hit, landing a shell right under the trailing PT boat and blasting its legs off, leaving it rolling and thrashing in the water as well.

The remaining five pick up their speed and continue to make a run for the safety of the atoll.

"You should break off!" White Plains warns. "There's some low cloud cover over the islands so my planes can't get a good visual!"

"All right, let's recover that damaged Abyssal and regroup with the others!" You say. "Hey, Sweet Pea, and luck on finding their base?"

"Not yet. The recon helicopters are still combing the area." Portland responds.

"At low altitude?" White Plains gasps. "Isn't that dangerous?"

"The pilots didn't seem to think so." Portland responds. "I don't really have a say in it, anyways."

Both you and Johnston move in to recover the damaged PT boat while Heerman provides security, her 5 inch cannons drawn and ready for any potential ambush. Up close, your instinctive revulsion for the PT boat just increases. It was barely even half your size, with a tiny pale body and the typical black armored bits grafted to it like all other Abyssals. What REALLY unnerved you was the sounds it was making. It sounded like.. like..

Like it was crying.

The shrieking and sobbing were unmistakable, loud and high pitched. It sounded EXACTLY like a crying baby.

"Oh jesus, can we shut this thing up?" Johnston wrinkles her nose in disgust.

"Just bear with it." You sigh as you grab the PT boat bit its oversized skull and drag it through the water behind you.

As the three of you transport the wounded Abyssal back to the main fleet, the PT boat gets even more agitated, its thrashing becoming more violent and unpredictable.

Suddenly, the PT boat lets out a scream even louder than any you've heard before, penetrating to your very bones and even causing your rig to vibrate.

"AGH!" Johnston cries as she uselessly tries to protect her ears. "What's it doing!?"

"Damnit, shoot it!" Heerman urges.

"Wait, it's sending out a radio signal!" The Freedom interjects. "Let it keep broadcasting! We might be able to trace the signal back to its base!"

"But the Abyssals will know where WE are!" Portland responds.

"This is Kilo one," One of the recon helicopters calls out, "we're picking up movement around the islands! Looks like lots of the little bastards are getting riled up!"

>>
>>44516851

I'm not actually assuming we do it here (if I'm reading it right, we blew the fucking thing's legs off, doubt that's endeared it much to us), but I'll repeat what I've said before: having the Abyssals be mindless generic doomsday enemies would be incredibly boring, disappointing and lazy writing on Merc's part, and I have too much confidence in him as a QM and a writer to believe he'll go down that path.

Which means the Abyssals WILL eventually be proven intelligent.

Which means Vahlen WILL eventually be proven wrong.

Which means that we, as an emotionally mature and calm shipgirl, will absolutely remind her of the fact that she claimed they were mindless beasts and that she was well within her rights to torture and experiment on them (incidentally the same track as fucking Mengele, though her claims of her victims being dangerous are actually valid).
>>
>>44516999
As much as I want to prove Chibs and his ilk wrong, we have a mission to accomplish here, which can directly lead to the saving or losing of lives in the future.
>>
>>44517016

"Argh, fine!" Portland groans. "Just leave it with us! We'll handle the PT boats while you head in and take out their base! You're the only ones fast and maneuverable enough to do it!"

Already, White Plains begins launching more attack planes. Both the Freedom and Little Rock begin to turn away, no doubt to gain more distance between themselves and the quickly approaching Abyssals. Portland and San Diego both interpose themselves between the atoll and the rest of the battlegroup.

Your 'subversion' of the accepted mindlessly evil enemy is so cliche by now that it's just as boring and disappointing as a cookie-cutter plot.

Say the Abyssals are proven intelligent.
Then they have intentionally and with no warning gone after civilian targets with no intention of leaving survivors. They, when captured, would rather starve to death than provide any cooperation. They CHOSE to do everything they have done so far.
What makes you think that they would choose differently when they made a conscious decision to refuse all attempts at dialogue?

It'd be a refreshing change of pace if the merciful protagonist were to be proven wrong and the ruthless characters be proven right.

But WHY are they doing it?

A prelude to an alien or Lovecraftian invasion?

An instinctive hatred of or revulsion towards humanity?

A belief that they're saving the Earth by killing the things that are constantly killing it?

Can we introduce effective communication with them? Can they be reasoned with? Can we bring this war to a peaceful end without the genocide of either side?

None of these questions, questions that encourage discussion and interest in the characters and story, exist if they're just generic mindless doomsday enemies like you and your ilk seem to want them to be.

>>44517130

See my response above, plus the bit below regarding the "conscious choice" to ignore communications.

How do we know they're CHOOSING to not communicate? They could just be incapable of recognizing our communiques, just as we're largely incapable of recognizing theirs. Do you know how hard it is for a deaf-mute man and a blind man to communicate without outside assistance?

Who's to say they haven't broadcast warnings that "We are going to destroy X in Y hours, anyone there will be considered an enemy combatant" or "Cease your blasphemic raping of the shorelines" or whateverthefuck REASON they have for attacking us, and we just haven't been able to comprehend it?

If they can recognize our communications and HAVE ignored them, then we get to ask WHY, as above.

The 'subversion' might be as cliche as the accepted mindless enemy, but it opens up a fuckton more possible story options.

"Sure thing." You nod.

"Tracking the signal..." Freedom updates you. "Almost there!"

Suddenly, a new sound joins the the cacophony. A louder wail emanates from the atoll, but unlike the high pitched shrieking of the PT boat, this wail is much more feminine and more consistent. Another Abyssal maybe?

"Got it! Transmitting coordinates to you!" Freedom says somewhat happily. You receive a picture over the radio, appearing over your eyes as a map that marks a spot in the center of the atoll.

"Go!" Portland yells.

Up ahead, you could see more PT boats arriving as a thin black line over the horizon. There had to be sixty, at least, each lugging two torpedoes...

"We have to go!" Heerman hisses.

That's why Shipgirls exist. Between Humanity and the Abyssals, they are the links that bridge the two. Either be a puppet to the bigwigs of humanity, or attempt to reach out and explore the connection they have with the Abyssals at the cost of being forsaken by humanity. That's the dilemma that the shipgirls face. There is a connection between abyssals and shipgirls, its just that the higher-ups/leaders of humanity want to exploit the shipgirls as a convenient tool. Haven't you seen the treatment humans gave to Hoel and the other shipgirls as soon as things weren't going their way? Implied threats of scuttling, abuse of the chain of authority, and gun barrels pointed to their head.

When we called out Vahlen for the experiments conducted on the Wo-class. One of the human guards gave us a rough shove treatment with his rifle when kicking us out. Also San Fran warned us that the bigwigs in the US took notice of our capture of the Wo-class implying that they might know something from the data gathered by Vahlen's team that they don't want us to know. Hence the rough treatment.
>>
>>44517401

T'be fair to the guard, he apparently lost his family to the Abyssals and was somewhat pissed at our defending them. Still doesn't excuse his abuse of us, though.

And there is certainly some shady shit going on.

>"The kind eyes that would like to put you in situations that will get you killed." San Fran sighs as she finishes off her second pancakes. "There's the Abyssals, too. The fact that they're intelligent at all proves Vahlen at least partly wrong.

And Vahlen's research will NEVER be completely justified. Or are you one of those chucklefucks who supports Unit 731?

After all, the intelligent beings they experimented on didn't want peace either.
>>
>>44517450
You're also ignoring the part about the big wigs in DC. "the kind of eyes that would like to put you in situations that will get you killed" implies that the Big wigs in DC would also love to see any non-obedient/not-useful-to-their-cause shipgirls dead. They would find any shipgirl that either knows to much or too dangerous and send them off on suicide missions in order to get rid of them. Why because we're girls made from warship. We're literally weapons of war made to kill stuff and die for it. but the problem here is that now those scuttled weapons of war are back from the dead and now have sentience.

"Come on girls, let's get around them!" You yell, "Put those boilers to max!"

Meanwhile, behind you, the main battlegroup does what it can to try and thin out the numbers of PT boats before they can get into range. White Plains' aircraft buzz overhead, dropping bombs and diving down to perform strafing runs in the mass of PT boats. Bright flares of light lance through the sky as Freedom and Little Rock begin disgorging missiles. Like before, these missiles maneuvered and twisted through the air as if they had a mind of their own, relentlessly hunting down the PT boats no matter how many maneuvers they tried, and explosions rippled across the entire line.

However, the moment they get in to Portland and San Diego's gun range, they're already disappearing from sight as you gain distance from the main mass of Abyssals.

"I think it's safe to start going into the atoll now." Heerman advises.

"Yeah! Let's go!" Johnston whoops.

Overhead, you can see a pair of helicopters circling in the sky above.

"Hoel, this is Kilo One, we and Kilo Two have visual on the target and will provide whatever support we can!"

"Thanks, Kilo." You nod as you look around. Even though a ton of PT boats were drawn out, you couldn't be totally sure ALL of them were drawn out.

No one in command wants a rebel that could decide to defect at the wrong time and lead to the death of an entire battlegroup.
Same with all of the sailors that have to fight alongside the shipgirls; they don't want to be next to a ship that might turn their guns on them in the middle of a fight.
If they can't trust a ship to not go rogue in the middle of a battle, then what should be done with that ship? Just have it rust in port?

The races took enjoyment in their fight against Earth, and would have done it on their own, though.

The Sectoids because they're a cruel and vicious race that enjoy tormenting those less developed than them because of their own weakness and frail bodies.

The Mutons because they've got a warrior culture and they want to fight.

The Chryssalids are pure animals that want to hunt and lay eggs.

They wanted a young race that had both strength of body and psi strength (the Gift) on par with their own that they could then use to finish ascending. Their original attempt had failed, leaving them in bodies that required feeding on the weaker Gifts of lower races.

"Watch out, PT boats spotted!" Heerman warns. "Starboard side!"

Indeed, just seconds later your radar pings with a large blob of contacts coming in from the left. You turn to see almost twenty more PT boats speed towards you, trying to get an attack in on your flank. You seethe. These bastards were going to delay you-

"YEEEEEEEHAAAAAAW!" You radio blares in your ear as you hear the roar of helicopter engines. "Looks like a good ol' fashioned turkey shoot!"

At that moment, a helicopter screeches over your head, barely a hundred feet in the air. Even more egregious, you notice, is that it looked as if the copilot was leaning out of the door, held in place only by a single bungee cord as he fires his assault rifle on full auto, the bullets forming a small curtain of water across the front of the PT boat formation and forcing them to turn away, breaking up their formation.

Then, Kilo Two roars past overhead, even lower at fifty feet this time. And not only was its copilot hanging out of the door, the PILOT was also leaning out, his assault rifle held in one hand as they both unload streams of bullets into scatter PT boats, knocking down more than a couple.

"We got these lil bastards!" One of the Kilos whoops. "You three keep going and take out that big nasty!"

"Jesus what are those guys?" Heerman looks on in bewilderment.

The sectoids are also mentioned as absolute cowards who had to be forced to come to Earth.

The mutons don't have a warrior culture, they're incredible morons who have all of their tactical knowledge written into their brains by the Ethereals and who have been genetically designed and modified for combat.

The chryssalids are, like you said, mindless animals. I don't support torturing dangerous animals that can't be kept away from humanity, I support killing them as painlessly as possible.

That's not implied at all. Only that the Sectoids are a cruel race because of their frailty.

"Fucking CRAZY AWESOME, that's what!" You whoops as you wave happily to the circling helicopters. You see one of the pilots actually return the gesture with a thumbs up before circling around for another attack run. Either way, you didn't have to worry about those PT boats.

The three of you continue forward with no further encounters. You round the final island separating you from our target, and nearly screech to a halt.

Well, you found the base, all right.

On first sight, the base looked to be a Wa-class transport, though much, much larger. However, after some examination, you could tell it was very different. Its massive bloated body was a mass of arms, nozzles, and orifices. Huddled all around it was a mass of PT boats, like baby animals drawn to their mother. You could see bony, mechanical arms picking up PT boats and rocking them gently as more arms reloaded their spent torpedo tubes. Other PT boats used their oversized mouths to suckle the numerous hoses and nozzles dangling off the side like teats, while numerous orifices were continually ejecting new PT boats, wailing and screeching like newborns.

And at the end of that massive, horrendous body was a tiny, half humanoid shape. Just the upper body, head, and arms of a very pale woman. She was awake, and gazing off in the direction of the main battle. No doubt wondering how the battle was going.

And then the PT Mothership gazes in your direction and gives a loud, high pitched shriek. A shriek that all of her "children" mimic and they all glare at you.

"Uhhhh, I think it's time for a 'strategic withdrawal.'" You suggest as you gaze at the unworldly horror and all of its little hellspawn.

"You mean run away?" Johnston asks aghast.

"No, STRATEGIC WITHDRAWAL." You clarify. "We're not REALLY running away, okay?"

"How about stop talking and more shooting?!!" Heerman butts in, punctuating with blasts from her 5 inch cannon.

"Full reverse!" You bark. You consider firing off your torpedoes in addition to your cannons, as they'd definitely put a bigger dent in the Mothership, but with so many PT boats in the way, you're not sure if you'd have a clear shot.

Between the three of you, you and your sisters manage to take out quite a few PT boats. You yourself account for five of the little bastards, drilling 5 inch shells through them. Hell, most of them weren't even loaded with torpedoes, having returned to the Mothership specifically to rearm. However, what you didn't take into account was that with their tubes empty, they were MUCH lighter and therefore MUCH faster.

The little bastards rush forward towards you. Your sustained fire takes down another four, which ends when one of the PT boats lunges forward and latches itself to your shooting hand. Seconds later, more PT boats dogpile on you, grabbing onto your arms and legs and your Rig, severely restricting your movement and weighing down, slowing your speed to a crawl.

"Nnnnngh, bastards!" You grunt as you try unsuccessfully to shake them off. Then the sound of distant splashes lets you know that the armed PT boats have released their torpedoes. These little bastards were willing to sacrifice themselves for the mothership!

"Hoel!" Heerman shrieks.

"Get out of there!" Johnston calls.

Unfortunately, your sisters both have their own hands full trying to keep the PT boats away from them, and can't come to assist. Not that you would want them to. They might get caught in the torpedo blasts.

You try to shake off the PT boats, but they're stuck on too tight, stubborn holding on in their suicidal deathgrips. You manage to catch a glimpse of three torpedoes heading straight at you, and there was nothing you could do about it. Your only hope was that the mass of PT boats covering you would at least shield you from the worst effects of the blasts. You wince as you brace for impact.

An impact that never comes.

Your eyes snap open when one of the torpedoes explodes. You manage to glance to the side to see Heerman sailing furiously in, hellfire flashing in her eyes as thick black smoke billows from her stack, a sure sign she was redlining her boilers. She raises her 5 inch cannon and brackets the second torpedo with shell fire, causing it to explode prematurely as well. However, the third and last torpedo was practically on top of you. There was no way she could stop it-

The last thing you see is Heerman's mournful smile as she slides between you and the torpedo. And suddenly the world devolves into a storm of mist, fire, and smoke.

"HEEERMAAAAAAAN!" You hear yourself scream.

>And unfortunately we'll have to continue things next week! Don't forget Vertical Tanks on Saturday!
