You sit on that hillside of wild grass and patches of stony earth. Gentle winds tug at stray strands of your hair and bring the scent of hearthsmoke from your not-too-distant home to your nostrils. This is a peaceful place, the air charged with the closeness of somewhere else completely. From that other place, your plea for aid, for healing of your blinded eyes, has called forth something. You had hoped to find a god, a patron of mortal men, but given the many not-quite-voices you heard as your mind glimpsed that other place, that may not be what has descended to now stand before you.

"Name me," it commands. The voice you hear, a real voice this time, is neither male, nor female, but is filled with compassion and care. You can feel a pressure from the entity as well, that was not present in the gods of the Wild that you have already met. It feels almost as if...

"I am mercy, I am care and compassion," the being says and you get the feeling it is reciting from memory, somehow. "I am that which banishes pain and ill. I am healing and I am rest. Name me, mortal."

What will you do?

"My sight is gone, god or spirit or whatever you are." you explain. "I cannot see what you are to name you appropriately. I need my eyes restored or for you to tell me of yourself if you want a name."
"Sight is meaningless," the entity tells you, "For I lack form. I am unlike the gods that walk this world beside you, for they are born from things that have existed long, long before I. I have lived as long as mankind, but I only gained distinction these last few minutes. All mercy, all kindness, all acts of charity and healing have formed me. Now, a name must bind me and make me whole. Give mercy a name, human and I will tell you what must be done to restore your sight."

"Can't you just use magic to heal me?" you ask.
"No. Much as I wish to, I am bound not to. We know too little of humanity and this world and it was, after all, your own actions that scarred you. I am sorry, human, but for all things, there must be a price. For your arrogance, the price was blindness and for your healing, the price is a trial. Just as you give the gods of the wild offerings for their blessings, you must make an offering of another kind now."
That makes a degree of sense at least. Even when Nila was in love with you and felt kindly towards your clan, she still accepted offerings in exchange for bountiful fishing and the river staying within its banks. And the other gods have never lifted a hoof, finger or paw, unless they were pleased with the sacrifice and offering they were given.
"But first, you must name me," the calming voice of the entity continues. "For that is the price to be paid for knowledge."

What will you do?
>Gods need names, Nila taught you that. You have this thing over a barrel; stay silent

>>44500651
Annoying, isn't it? It's always want want want, never a word for what you need. Just to feed the family, or yourself. It's the same with humans though, isn't it? They'll take what you've set your heart on without half a thought for you.

One of these days, someone should take something from them... See how they like it.
>>
Votes called then! Sorry if you guys think I'm going too slow. I'll try and pick up the pace. I just want to make sure everyone has a chance to contribute.

Just woke up, partied harder than I thought. But anyways, Happy New Year, and thanks for the thread RWB!
>>
"Then I name you... Rhea," you nod. "You are Rhea, god of healing and mercy."
"It is a good name," Rhea replies, laying a hand gently on your head. Thought you named 'him' a god, you still can't make up your mind one way or the other and the physical touch doesn't help. You suspect groping a god to find out would be considered disrespectful, but Rhea seems to sense your confusion a little.
"Confused? Put it from your mind, human. My gender does not matter. What matters is that I am now free to act. I can restore your sight to you, human, for all injury and sickness is mine to cure, but it will not be easy, for either of us. The scars of magic are inflicted not only on the body, but upon the very soul. I know of only one task that could make a worthy offering for such a blessing... And it is not one in my service alone."

"What is it you require as an offering then?" you ask hesitantly. You're prepared to pay almost any price, of course, but what could it be that Rhea seems to prize it so highly? Another statue? A hundred? The lives of a score of aurochs bulls? The pelts of five great bears?
"Nothing less than unity," the god says, solemnly. "The unity of every man, woman and child in this valley, as one family of families; one tribe. You humans compete, fear and have nearly come to blows in the past. Only your wisdom and leadership stayed the hand of your hunters, but that was not the only time things have nearly turned to violence - merely the only one you saw and averted. As more are born and grow, dark clouds gather on the horizon. The task I give you, human, is to unite the clans and together, know peace and plenty."
>>
>>44501043
>Sorry if you guys think I'm going too slow. I'll try and pick up the pace. I just want to make sure everyone has a chance to contribute.
Don't worry mate, we're still here for a reason: we like your writing. If it takes a bit too long to update then it's all sweet.
If you want more participation, maybe put in a time limit for votes? If there's a limit to how long votes are accepted for then it might be an incentive to more anons to vote faster.

As always though, I'm just some anon on a weeb site, don't follow my advice if you don't want to.
>>
>>44501377
"So is the decision of I and my kin in council. Though the task may take many years, this is the cost of your sight."
You're struck dumb by the very idea. Firstly, a deed as an offering, not merely possessions? Secondly, how would you even begin to start uniting your clan and the Strangers, to say nothing of the herders who wander in and out? How will you all live? Who can co-ordinate so many? The fields will need to grow massively to feed so many! And yet... With more in the fields, more may yet be supported to lead and to create. The herder's tamed animals can be managed better than wild herds. The strangers know things you do not. The gods could be pleased more by things of beauty, rather than necessity...
"I see in your face, you begin to understand," Rhea nods. "Humanity has the potential for much good, when it is brought together and its efforts build for the greater whole, rather than simple survival. Go then, human. You have your task. Now you must learn what must be done and gather the strength and the spirit to perform great deeds. Use all at your disposal, human, for this task will define you for all time."

You feel Rhea's presence begin to fade. "I am with you and your kin and with all humankind, forever. I am the healer. Call on me and I will answer."
You are again alone, save for the dozing forms of your wolf-dog pack, who stir themselves at once as you rise. You return to the village at a slow pace, mulling over your divine mission. Before you can begin your quest however, there is another, much more pressing matter that needs addressing.

You do not have enough food to feed everyone! One of your family must go hungry. Who will it be?

Are you deliberately being stupid, you just like arguing? Clearly Mesut is gonna be an impediment to intratribal politics, at least an obstacle
>>
>>44501572
Yeah I'll give that to a barely passing charisma roll, but this needs to be fixed. Once we work out the problems within our tribe and improve ourselves, it will be easier to get the herders to join us. The other tribe will be more difficult, due to them being relatively large and hunters by tradition.
>>
>>44501649
We have at least a couple of options open to us:
>Get him on our side
Make an agreement with him; he has the grain and we the fucking Gods.

>Go for the herders first, convince them to join our tribe.
If there's a lot of them, they're not going to like some guy they barely/don't know handing out both their animal's food and the human's. This could make agriculture either ours or a collectively owned/run endeavor for all people, as it should be.

>Cultivate our own large area of land, producing more than we'll need; then make a covert agreement with the Weather God to fuck his fields up and leave ours alone. (feeding the tribe with our land)
We could play that like Mesut's angered the Gods and turn the tribe against him, or 'intercede' on his behalf to the Weather God, further cementing our role as shaman/High Priest.

It took longer to write that than it did to think of them, anon.
>>
Alright, votes called and writing!

I do love how you all think Mesut's a problem just because he potentially has some power. It's fascinating!
>>
>>44501804
We should get the herders to join us, on our "side". I'm not keen on establishing party lines while we attempt to unite all people in the region, but atleast for discussion purposes, I think it could be useful.

You have no heart to force your family to go without food, especially as it was your obsession with fixing your eyes that lead to the shortfall. You carefully hide the fact that you aren't eating from your family, saying simply that you aren't hungry, or that you ate earlier. It seems to work with Ebba, Sera and Noh, but you have a distinct feeling that Beren isn't fooled, especially as she would have to be the one to help you get anything to eat, due to your blindness.

It doesn't take long before the gnawing hungry pangs claw at your body. A few days and you have to eat something; anything! A single flatbread a day; half of a smoked fish... At least there's enough water for you to drink. Somehow, despite your stomach feeling constantly empty, draining your strength, you make it to the harvest time.

It is now late fall. Sera has turned 13 and little Noh is now six. Mesut fairly gives you your share of the harvest. His family alone is having serious difficulty keeping up with harvesting every scrap of grain in the fields, so he's started enlisting help from the other families. For simplicity's sake, he's also largely in charge of the planting now, too. Your share of the grain comes to about enough to feed two dozen people, or rather, your family of five, until almost the middle of summer. It seems you and yours may soon have to expand your fields again, if you want to keep relying on grain for food. Noh eats a lot for someone so small!

Sorry. Emergency phone call from family. My gran's not been feeling the best lately... Christmastime was somewhat marred by a series of minor strokes

Your lack of sight may inhibit you from performing many tasks, but magic is simply an expression of power and will. For a long time now, you've refrained form using magic of any kind, for fear of what you might do to yourself, but with a task like uniting the clans into a single tribe ahead of you, you can't afford to ignore your most unique and potentially powerful tool. This time however, you've learned your lesson. You'll start small, just as Nila advised you to years ago.

You immediately hit problems when your first chance comes. Sera is forever getting scraped up as she she plays in the village (even if she is getting a little too old for most games now), so it's little surprise when she comes home one day unable to close her hands and very definitely NOT crying, honest..
"She fell over while she was running," Ebba explains. "We picked the little stones out of her hands, but..."
"I-it only hurts a little!" Sera protests, but you still gently take her hands and breathe, summoning your will.

Heal.

No problem. Still, don't thank me yet. We had a critical success before. You remember what happened?
>>
Next to the force you had to use when trying to lower the river, or even contain a school of fish, you're amazed by how easily you can wipe away the tiny cuts that cover Sera's hands. Maybe you've set your sights a bit too low... You may not really understand how wounds heal, other than that they'll fester if left open or un-treated, but when it comes to something as small as this, it's child's play. In a matter of a few breaths, Sera is looking at her hands with sparkling eyes, as she flexes her fingers.
"It doesn't hurt anymore! Whoa, so that's what magic can do! That's amazing da!" Your young daughter throws her arms around you, kissing your cheek. "Thank yoooou-! Ma? What's-?"

Beren grabs you by your ear and for a moment, you think she's going to hit you like a disobedient child. You may not be able to see her face, but you can feel fear falling off her in waves, as she shakes, still holding onto you and dragging you to one side painfully. Finally, she makes a sound halfway between a sob of relief, an expression of disgust and a sigh of acceptance, letting go of your ear and placing her hand on your shoulder for a moment, before walking away.

For the rest of fall, you keep your practice up, taking care of small cuts and injuries that always come at harvest time. Once or twice, you find something you cannot handle, such as when an inattentive fisher cleaning his kill, hacks halfway through the bone of one of his fingers while trying to chop the fish's head off. You try to use your magic, but while the flesh closes easily, the bone takes much more. The black spider-lines trace over your skin again, but to the relief of everyone present, they don't even go past your wrist.
>>
>>44505091
As the first snows of winter start to fall, you're reasonably confident that you've at last taken the first proper steps to using your magic responsibly. It'll take much more practice, certainly, but you now have an idea of your limits and can start to slowly expand them. Will has never been a problem for you; only the strength of your spirit, which still needs to be trained like any other muscle. Along with that, the deeper your understanding of whatever you're trying to achieve, the more you can do. Simple and easy, when you don't try to do something beyond your means. Just like Nila said; magic can do a lot, but the one thing it can NEVER do is push beyond your limits. In everything else, a man could push himself just a little further, or find some edge or way to cheat, but magic will not allow that...

Then again, when you weren't fast enough to catch deer, your ancestors hurled spears at them... Maybe there's some tools out there for magic that you just haven't figured out how to make yet?

It is now early winter. What will you do? Beren seems displeased and worried with you practicing magic, but she's prepared to let you, it looks like.

>Possibly trying to help plants grow faster when it's season for it.
But do it slowly. Start with a very small portion of the field and slowly expand to test how much we can do.
>>
>>44505643
I was thinking experiment with a separate plot, as to not put in some crazy bad magic into the soil of our producing plantation. Like a few separate plants to experiment on.
Also expanding on healing given we may not get our blindness cured but possibly heal some of the damage over time. And renegotiate with the healing god. To strengthen our magic. Possibly offer some sacral ice along with it to get favorable terms. Or something.
>>
>>44505827
I like the plant ideas but I will actively vote against renegotiating with the healing God. We can train magic on our own, and while stronger magic has a chance to lead to allowing us to heal our blindness, it's probably not feasible, especially because this isn't natural blindness, it's magical by nature. With our current deal with the Healing God, we're guaranteed sight once we unite the tribes.

Drawpal here, out of general interest has our tribe discovered well, recorded imagery, like have they understood and drawn things on walls? I know we have sculpted a bit but never noticed anything else. Because I have a theory that we could enlist thee Gods of the Wild to our side by offering them a Rune, a rune would be immensely powerful given how they seemingly grow. It solidifies their meaning into the world, even if life has left that anchor remains, whenever it is seen even without instruction the Rune will speak their name. It gives form to them, something Marking something else as theirs.

I can answer that quite neatly!

Winter is a traditional time to relax and for your clan to indulge in their artistic side. You can still appreciate music, drummed out on empty gourds or blown from bone flutes, even if you never had a talent for it yourself, but art is now, sadly, lost to you. Your clan has no real tradition of recorded history, instead preferring to trust in the stories of the elders, but some events, important to individuals, used to be recorded on the walls of the rocky overhangs that made up your winter camp, when you were still roamers. Now that you have settled, the inside of the hides that make up your homes, as well as the wooden struts that hold them aloft, is the preferred medium. You could still carve the beams by touch perhaps, but the bright and wonderful colours of the paintings are sadly no longer something you can appreciate.

You instead talk with your family and clan, carefully judging the mood. With no major disasters recently and the harvest still going strong, most families are quite happy. The recent trade with the herders also provides for a small handful of luxuries that the ongoing restriction on hunting Aurochs has limited in the clan. Bone in particular is extremely useful and while not quite as strong as the massive beasts, goat bone and horn is a very welcome addition that everyone is glad to have.

As you are no longer able to contribute much to your tribe's artistic traditions, you instead spend your winter in contemplation. You've discovered a new trick with your magic; lifting things without touching them. This, of course, is of great delight to your three children, Noh and Ebba in particular shrieking in excitement as you make things float between your outstretched hands. You can't lift anything for long and anything much heavier than a stone is beyond you, as is moving it faster than a slow walk, but it's still a way for you to train without morbidly waiting for someone to get hurt.

It is now late winter. What will you do?

Increasing magic focus on the new skill being stronger and healing in particular.
Think we can heal our own eyes, guys? Increasing magic should be damn useful. Having a healer in the clan, can make it that we're useful to hunter bands also around the tribe. And Lifting knives and sending them at enemieswe can't see is useful to any fight.
Even once we make a net, the magic can make capturing fish a breeze once strong enough.Again we need eye sightor someone telling us when to lift the net.

I want to try and focus on working the levitation and healing, we could be the precursor race that creates the jedi and sith orders for all we know. Wouldn't that be weird.

Does our tribe know how to make wheels?

if we can make better tools then we can use less people towards farming.
>>
>>44508491
Nope. Hell, your 'beast of burden' is Dave over there as it stands now.

>>44508603
I think you mis-understand. If you make a thing, it's a single instance of it, usually for personal use.
>>
>>44508603
We don't want that until we have control or mesut has lost it

>>44508467
>Better fishing spears
>>
>>44508643
oh, in that case animal domestication, specifically the aurochs
>>
Instructions people to fence off fields to contain the autoachs, make them a minor shelter.

We in the meantime should contact the Soqed ask him what his eye solution was and if he or the others will help us in our quest, and once our sight is restored they each get a rune a permanent place in the world even without us.

make some bone shit for the family

Let's work on this

Alright, counting the votes for possibly the last time this thread... If I'm right it's...
>3 votes for practicing healing and telekinesis
>1 vote to make better fishing spears
>1 vote to research animal domestication
>1 vote to craft ornaments for our family

Have I got that right?

>>44509766
Why digging the list so much, dude?
>>
>>44510270
So long as we take our time with magic, don't take many chances, slow and steady man.
>>
>>44510270
I don't really want to say its OCD, but you could sit me down in front of a massive pile of data and tell me to spend all day organizing it and I would be happy doing it. Basically, nice lists trigger a dopamine surge.
>>
>>44510270
Yes we shall become the first Jedi Force user!

RWB just curious but didn't you run a simlair quest that had more progress or am I just misremembering things? I was going to finish reading up on it but forgot the archive...
>>
Bump?
>>
Arse, falling asleep. This'll be the last update for tonight coming up.

>>44510444
oh shit yes I did. That one covered A broader overview of the entire tribe however and had less research to it. I mainly based it off endless games of Civilization and the like. It eventually fell apart due to many reasons.

I decided this time, there's going to be a more personal approach and look at the world, through the eyes of one person every generation. That'll also help me give you a plotline and something to actually keep the story moving on. I'll recycle some bits, but don't expect things to go exactly the same.

Here's the archive of it all... Jesus, at one point, it was the longest-running quest on /tg/ can you imagine that?
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Red+White+and+Britfag

I also did about two threads of Gourmet Quest back when Toriko was the new hotness... Have to apologise to /tg/ in general for keeping that going...

Could we pick the heir/next generation?
Say by imparting magic onto our children/and choosing which one? Since either way, we will have set up our children to be leaders.
>>
>>44511766
Everyone is magic. It's just a question of willpower.
>>
>>44511766
I'm hoping to set our kids up with these skills:
Sera=Hunter/Leader
Ebba=Spirit/Leader
Noh=Craftsman/Leader
Our kids should aim to be the best at what they do, both for their own benefit and that of future generations.
>>
>>44511841
Yeah, but having them train from younger to use magic in their own ways will be fine. even if we impart just enough to heal thier own injuries. and they continue from there if they way.
one focusing on using earth to help craft, fire or wind to hunt, and water to heal *specializing* say like a wise elder who everyone comes to when bearing a child for her/his blessing and healing wounds.

You're starting to become frustrated by your slow progress. If this were anything else, you'd have figured out some trick by now, or a work-around that got more results for your effort. It's like twisting a deer's leg off with your bare hands; sure you COULD and it looks impressive, but it's generally more efficient to make a couple more cuts and pop the damn thing out nice and simple. With magic, you can do things that openly defy the natural order of the world, but every one of them has to be done the hard way. You remember Rhea's talk about prices for things and reflect that maybe THIS is the price for magic at all... Trying to work around it would upset some delicate balance and... Well, you know better than possibly anyone alive all about how THAT turns out.

Despite your frustration, you are making incremental improvements. All you really need now a little understanding of just what it is you're doing, or a bit more power. Either way, you're well on your track to being more than just a dabbler. You can even make three stones dance in a circle above your hand now. This, obviously, has the effect of making Noh think you're the most amazing person to have ever lived. Your son's staying kind of short for his age, but he thinks the world of you and apparently can't take his eyes off you whenever you're in the same house.
>>
>>44511766
You can indeed. You can start training them already, of course, but you'll only choose who to play as next, once Trym finally succumbs to old age/fuck-you-dice syndrome

>>44511841
>>44511989
Learning to use magic is a bit of a spoiler, but just to save you from barking up the wrong tree...

Think of it like having a circuit breaker in your brain. Normal people have it; you don't. If they tried to use magic, the switch would trip and they'd get no result. By careful training, mental conditioning and exposure to magic, that blockage can be removed and for some (like possibly Ebba), it's easier, or just never present at all.

Oh and don't limit your thinking to fire/earth/air/water. Firstly, I'm a fan of the Chinese elements (though what they're doing leaving air out, I have no idea) and secondly, magic in this setting doesn't fall into NEARLY so few categories. I mean there's metal, earth, healing, lightning, heat, cold, light, plants, movement, sound, to name just a few!

And that's it for this thread I think. Thank you all very much for playing!

I hope you all had a great new year! Now my least favourite month of the year is finally over, we might be able to start having uninterrupted threads again! Woooo! That is of course assuming I don't stop being a worthless drain on society and do something sensible like getting a job. Yeah, I'll see you all on Monday, same as usual. Good night!

Seriously, I really do appreciate you guys reading and replying to this quest, whether or not you draw or write things for it. It's nice to feel that I help make a few people's lives more enjoyable. Stay safe everyone.
>>
>>44512255
Hey man, it's fun, you're a great qm, and I'm glad to catch you outside of the archive. Have a happy new year
>>
>>44512255
Thanks for running!

Can we actually take an action and train our kids?
>>
>>44512255
thanks for you time. Really enjoy it.
Thanks for the info too.
>>44512426
I think we should get on that sooner rather than later. It could really help things speed up.
Once we get our blindness cured. We could theoretically take the place of three people on a farm. Planting and tending to the crops with our magic alone, increasing production and working on nature magic.
While teaching ours kids could be the equivalence to the industrial revolution. Since they will think of things to work on them selves, since food won't be as big a problem for them.
>>
>>44512255
Any obvious improvements to healing we made?
