You are standing in a giant hall, made of pure white marble. There seems to be nobody here, or at least nobody that you can detect. Then again, you just died, so its surprising that you can see or feel anything at all.

You were killed by...by...you can't remember! As you try to think about anything from your old life, its all blank. In fact, you can't remember your own name. You only know you're a man by looking down.

As you look around the hall, you see three cubes protruding out of the ground. they're all about the same size, but they seem to be made out of different materials. One seems to be made out of a transparent crystal, one seems to be made out of plain old stone, and the final one looks almost...Gaseous?

Well, there it is.

While you walk around the room, you feel yourself walk over something. You look down, but there doesn't seem to be anything there. You reach down with your hands to feel for the object, and you find what feels to be another cube, around 1cm^3. As soon as you touch it with your hands, a voice sounds in your head.

"Do you wish to choose THE ORIGIN SEED"

Also, forgot to mention, the other three cubes are around 1m^3.

"Yeah sure, why not?"
Immediately, the whole world turns black, and you lose consciousness.

You wake up to what seems like a wooden roof. The flickering lights from what you assume are candles illuminate everything you see in a warm, yellow-orange glow. You hear what sounds like talking, but you can't discern the language, only that it seems to be two things talking. They sound...human? One voice seems to be lower than the other, so you guess that the lower one is your father and the higher one is your father, but because you can't seem to control your head, you can't turn to verify.

>What do?
>>
>>44498731
>because you can't seem to control your head
Try to covertly determine what we can control.
>>
>>44498765
You can feel two arms and two legs, and upon attempting to move your arms you notice that they can shift positions, albeit not too much. Its seems the same is for your legs; you can bend and shift them slightly, but not enough to get you to move anywhere. Thankfully, the two voices don't seemed to have changed tones despite your slight movements.

The surface you are lying on seems to be just a plain, hard surface. Your sense of touch doesn't seem to have developed far enough to feel patterns yet. Thankfully, your dulled sense also means that you don't feel as uncomfortable as you would feel if you retained full senses.

As you lie there, it suddenly occurs to you. You've been reborn as a child! The prospect is intriguing and scary at the same time; you've been given a second chance at life, but at the same time you wonder what has caused your reincarnation. Do other living things undergo this process? What race am I? All theses questions are running your head, but no answer seems to come to you. While you think, your mind drifts back to the origin seed, or whatever the voice called it. You can't seem to feel it with your hands, so you concentrate on your soul realm, something all sentient beings have. As you calm your mind, you start to feel a very small spark of energy in your lower dantian. Other than that, however, there is nothing to be sensed, either in your middle or upper dantian.

>1. Try to get the attention of the two voices. Although you haven't tried yet, crying seems like it would be a good way to do this.
>2. Write in.

>1. Try to get the attention of the two voices. Although you haven't tried yet, crying seems like it would be a good way to do this.
I see no reason not to do this.
>>
>>44499004
You decide to get the attention of the two voices. After all, whats the worst that could happen? Although you can't move very well, screaming comes easily, and you yell to the best of your ability.

The deeper voice says something, before picking you up. As you get a better look at him, you see a rather annoyed light-skinned middle-aged human man. He is wearing a plain shirt made of a poor quality fabric, but two tattoos stretch from his neck, along his jawline, and to his chin. He seems annoyed, and says something to you in what seems like a ticked-off tone. He then puts you back on the wooden surface, but not before you are able to catch a glimpse of what you assume to be your mother. She seems to be of a similar age to what looks like your father. She has a darker skin color and a different facial structure, but she has a similar pair of tattoos that run from her neck to her chin. Hers, however, look more curved, while the man's looks more jagged.

Amused at the man who you assume to be your father's annoyance, you laugh as hard as you can, while waving your hands in the air. You hear what sounds like a tick of annoyance, and he mutters something to the woman, who responds with something else. The man says something with resignation, before flipping you over and putting a book in front of you. You can't recognize any of the symbols on the front cover, but the book seems to be bound in a worn leather. Your father flips to the first page, before pointing at a word and saying a sound. You attempt to imitate the sound with your mouth, and after a few tries you seem to get an equivalent suitable enough to satisfy the man, because he goes onto the next word on the list. This goes on for 100 words, before he moves his finger back to the first word on the list. He doesn't say anything, however, and it seems this is your first test.

3 rolls of 3d6 for suggested actions.

You set a DC we should beat and rolls above the DC carry over to the next roll.

I'll do that system, but d6 seems a bit easy? I'll do 3d20, and each roll above the DC after the first successful roll will count for quarter of a "point". Once a full point is gathered, you can force a successful roll, and with two/three (depends on circumstance) you can get an EXTRAORDINARY SUCCESS. Any suggestions/critique are welcome though.

Throughout the test, you get right around half of the words right. With each wrong word comes a not-too-light slap on the head, followed by the correct pronounciation. Guess your father cares a lot about either your education or these words. After the test, your mother says something, but your father responds with insistence about something. He then goes to test you again, and within four repetitions of the word list you're able to pronounce all of the words on the list. Then, he goes onto the next page, before having another test. After what seems like eternity, he goes through twenty pages, before giving an exasperated sigh and leaves with the woman. He leaves the book in front of you, and keeps the light on, perhaps in hope that you will review the book in your sleep. You might just do that, actually, as your head hurts quite a bit from all of the slaps. You count the pages in the book, and count 1386 pages.

>What do

Also, if you/you all haven't already, might want to get a little bit of background knowledge on xianxia for the quest. Not necessary, but will make it a fair bit easier to progress. Or maybe not.

>>44499459
That doesn't actually change anything except crit rates, if we're even using crits.
>>
>>44499491
Crit's with a the 3d20 would take forever to get.
With 3d10 it's at least easier to say ah this one rolled 27 or above and that's a crit instead of rolling 54 and above.
>>
>>44499490
The father, evidently.
Power level system as in
1,2,3,saint,deity,etc
or like gaining power?
>>
>>44499512
My point is that using d20s instead of d10s doesn't change anything EXCEPT crit rates. Contrarily, it lets OP set more precise DCs to better represent challenges. Besides, you could just take the crit range you want on a d10, double it, and achieve exactly the same result on a d20.

That said, we could still be using increasingly large dice pools instead of single dice.
>>
>>44499518
Gaining power in stages with varied attribute affinity would be best.

The system from ISSTH is also good.

Gathering Qi -> Forming a core -> Strenghtening the spirit -> Gaining enlightenment->Gaining Immortality

You use suitable magic/combat techniques learned at certain levels to expend a Ki pool and Mana pool or something.

Hurt is bad. Study makes hurt less.

Those seem to be the rules of life, at least right now. You go through the 20 pages, reciting each word and attempting to recall the ones you forgot. The room doesn't seem to have any windows, so as a result there is no sense of time, but even after you go over the twenty pages and made sure you've remembered everything, the man and woman remain out.

The written language seems to be made of symbols (like Chinese). Further inspection of the books leads you to find out that the words seem to be ordered like a dictionary, and you start finding that some "primary" words are used in the "definitions" of other words.

>1. Count up the frequency of the words used. Even if a dictionary isn't similar to regular speech, some words should be used more than others.

>>
>>44499599
Separate it the same way Coiling dragon did.

Spiritual power grants you the ability to form a core used for magic while physical power allows you to form a ki core for physical stuff.

Both get strengthened by absorbing essence particles tied to the attribute you have a connection with.

Both use techniques to execute skills but the range of the physical techniques is limited to close quarters combat but has higher offensive power and defense in that range.

Spiritual techniques let you attack your opponents soul at a certain level and form a soul defense as well as using your elements power.

Think of it this way:
You have 2 main stats Constitution and Spirit.
From them you get your other stats.
From constitution it's Hp, Strenght, Agility and Ki-pool.
From Spirit it's Perception, Inteligence and Mana pool.

You start to count the frequency of the words you know the sounds of in the definitions of the words, and start tallying the frequency of certain words by putting a small mark of blood next to the word. It is a long, arduous process, and you only manage to get to page 15 before the man comes into the room. The man notices you ruining his book with blood, and is about to be very angry before he realizes what your doing, and for a very brief moment you catch what seems to be a smile.

Today's word cycle seems to be much longer than the last, and you get to roughly page 100 before a test. This time, you manage to remember more than last time, but due to the sheer volume of words you are slapped many, many times. Today's word cycle seems to be much longer than last times, but eventually the man leaves.

In the meantime, you crawl around the inside of your prison cell, and it is not long before you are tired out. You drag yourself to your book, and start reviewing the ~100 pages of words. The volume means that tonight you didn't have enough time to tally the words before the man comes in again. Today, another 100 pages. In your mind, you have this nagging feeling that successfully memorizing 100 pages of words a day is not normal for a human being, but to hell with feelings. Again, your success rate goes up, and your head hurts slightly less.

>>44499827
In your review of words, you start incorporating pronunciation, making yourself familiar with how to say the words. This lengthens the practice time, but you still have some time leftover, so you use it to tire yourself out rolling about in the wooden cage.

Once you finally finish the book in a span of 14 study-cycles, the man pulls out another book, this time full of words, and simply points at the page, indicating for you to read the book. You say the words in order, and much to his satisfaction read the whole book correctly. The language of this book is slightly different from the dictionary, but some of the most frequently used words in the dictionary are also very frequently used in this book. You'll be sure to mark those in the dictionary later.

Time goes by, and in the room you also learn how to write through dictation. The cycles fly by, filled with nothing but reading and writing. You figure that now that the material that he gives you is more about practicing and fluency, you lessen the academic practice during the down-time and instead focus more on physical training.

Also because of general consensus (3v1)

You start rolling around the cage during the downtime, first slowly but after a few cycles crawling becomes easier so you do that instead. You first crawl with both your arms and your legs, but soon you are able to do it with only legs. The crawling becomes easier, and one night...Finally, you are able to stand (with the help of the bars). From then, it is only a matter of time before you start walking. Meanwhile, the man has been replaced by a woman, who brings a few items with her. She then begins to say the word for each item, and leaves all of the items in your cage.

You start drawing on the cloth with a needle. Surprisingly, this art piece comes easily to you, despite having no prior knowledge. For a brief moment, you have a spark of inspiration: your family. It is impossible to describe, but it feels as though the art is already there, and you are simply a medium for the art to flow through onto your cloth. Although your finger mobility skills are not yet up to scratch, you attempt to channel the inspiration into your art, and the downtime flies by. As you add the finishing touches to the woman who you assume to be your mother, you suddenly have a strange conviction to draw her with extra large breasts. How odd, considering the fact that in reality she is as flat as it gets. Perhaps this will make her feel better, you chuckle to yourself.

You feel your fine motor skills improve with the drawing, and when you finish you are suddenly aware of the existence of a small, black pebble in your middle dantian. How strange.

>>
>>44500401
It appears that you still have some time, so you lay the drawing to one side, and sit down to meditate. You don't feel sleepy, strangely enough, despite the fact that you haven't slept since you were born. You try to nudge either the pebble or the spark, but they seem to be impervious to your efforts. This first meditations was not in vain, however, as the spark seems to have grown a small bit during the duration of the meditation.
>>44500408
Eventually, the woman walks back in, and you stare at her with wide eyes before giving her the drawing. She looks at it, and seems impressed until her eyes fall on what you assume to be the drawing of herself, where she snorts and puts it in a pocket.

You attempt to give her either the needle or the cup, but she denies both. Instead, she brings out a book that upon opening know is math book. It is very trivial book, first saying what the symbols are for numbers, and going on to addition and subtraction. This is not all, however, and just as you finish flipping through the book she brings out what seems like 20 books, all of which you quickly skim and identify as math books. She then indicates with gestures that you are meant to finish all of the books by the next time she comes in the room, before leaving.

You do the first half of the pile with relative ease, as its all fairly easy. Multiplication, systems of equations, Matricies, linear transformations and the like. It is only after you get to the middle of book 17, where they introduced bivariate distribution that the language barrier, combined with a lack of mathematical knowledge stop your progress.

Exasperated, you continue your efforts to walk, and you are able to walk from one end of the crib to the other without any assitance. Satisfied with your progress, you pick up the knife.
