Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you joined an ancient artificial hivemind and came across an old friend.

It is currently the 26th of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH.

It occurs to you that you never really did get around to finding that red gem Sadik wanted. You never even made a vague attempt. You'd forgotten about it for the most part. How long has it been since you took that job? It feels like months. “Sadik! Where have you been these last few months? I've been wondering when next our paths would cross!”

He dismounts his overburdened cart with some difficulty as servants unharness his camels and lead them off to be attended to. “I have been traveling Elven lands, and I figured so long as I was on the mainland I may as well catch up with a friend I happen to know in Aleamond.” He confesses as you draw near. “But tell me Mikhael, where have you been? I was surprised when I never ran across you amongst the elves.”

You suppose you were expecting this question, though it's not one you were looking forward to. However, before you can answer your draconic son comes to settle next to you, drawing a curious look from Sadik. “Wherever you've been I see you've made the most of your time there. I can barely remember the last time I saw a dragon, and that was deep underground not walking about in broad daylight. You know they're really quite friendly when you ply them properly. Gifts and flattery can take you far.”

Zahak's neck scales flare out, their loud rattling disturbing the stillness of the courtyard. {I'm not just here because Papa gave me stuff! Papa saved me from the other dragons.} He announces, a vague sense of irritation emanating from his thoughts. {They abandoned me, but Papa brought me out from underground and kept me warm until I hatched!}

The traveling merchant smiles broadly, bowing apologetically. “How foolish of me, of course.” He rights himself, one hand diving into the disorganized junk piled atop his cart and extracting a large fruit. It's shaped like a teardrop, the bulb of the fruit bright red with lengths of green sprouting off of it at various points. The outside is fleshy, and the entire thing is nearly as large as your head. “Allow me to offer you this as recompense, from the jungles of Elaudia.”

Zahak leans forward, sniffing it suspiciously. In the end he takes it in his mouth and lays down next to you, starting to gnaw lightly at the fleshy exterior. He seems quite happy even though he's not actually eating it, just chewing. Between Zahak's sharp teeth and powerful jaws it doesn't take long for the outer cover to split open, and almost immediately you're assaulted by the scents of rotten meat and sulphur.

Rather than being put off, as you are, your son seems quite pleased by this turn of events. He splits the fruit in half and starts to eagerly lap up the yellow, semi-gelatinous pulp within. {Papa, you should try this! It's really, really good!}

Considering how foul it smells, you can't say you're eager to try it yourself. {I think I'll let you have this one, Zahak. Maybe next time I'll try a bite.}

You're distracted from your own discomfort by Sadik clearing his throat, watching you expectantly. Right, you suppose he asked you a question.

You sigh, running a hand through your hair. Gods above, it's getting long. “I apologize Sadik, in Anthus I stayed for a time at the Academy and got drawn into the city's politics. After that I had to flee south, back to Pidjata, for reasons best left unsaid.”

Sadik quirks an eyebrow. “Certainly nothing to do with the death of Lord Spiros? I seem to recall he died shortly after our last meeting.”

Was it really that long ago? You suppose it was. “Of course not!” You lie through your teeth. “Suffice to say I made some enemies at the academy, some powerful enemies I wasn't prepared to face at the time. They've since been dealt with, but they sufficiently interrupted my plans that I never quite seemed able to get to Chiron and go through with our plan.”

Sadik leans against his cart, gesturing dismissively. “It's fine, I understand that the trials we face in this life can often prove overwhelming. Regardless, you'll be pleased to know that I've set someone else to the task and they're making good progress. When last we spoke she'd placed herself amongst the Warlord's inner circle. Soon the jewel will be mine, as it is by right.”

You know, he never actually told you what the jewel does, or why he wants it. Part of you wants to ask, but the other is staring at the immense pile of junk sitting atop his cart and wondering what wonders it holds within. You think you can see the head of a golem body poking out near the base, and worn wooden scroll tube capped with gold on either side likewise draws your eye.

Soma, Chrys did her GM meditation with every helpful artifact available, but Mik had to do his without any. Is Mik's GM "better" than Chrys's or are both of the same quality? Frosty and Sculptor both give a total of +8, so I assume the latter?

You draw yourself away from the cart, forcing your attention back to Sadik. “Would you mind if I called some of my companions down here to take a look at your wares? I feel they could benefit from looking through what you have on offer, and Gods know they have the money to spend.”

Sadik laughs, slapping his rotund gut. “Why of course! What else am I here for, if not to sell my wares to wealthy clients such as you and your companions? I was actually hoping you might have something to offer me as well.”

You could probably stand to sell off some of the artifacts you have stored in your cloak. You have three sets of armor and nearly a dozen weapons, most of which you don't even use at this point. Still, that can wait until later. “First Sadik I was wondering, you know you never actually told me what that jewel was. Now that it will soon be in your grasp, what would be the harm in telling me?”

Trying to multitask, you reach through the brooches while carrying on your conversation with Sadik. It's difficult to split your attention but after a moment's effort you're treated to the familiar feeling your thoughts muddling with those of your companions. {Sadik is in the courtyard, if any of you wish to see about purchasing new artifacts. Personally I recommend you at least take a look, I've never been disappointed by an artifact I've bought from him.}

Chryssa is still asleep, but from the rest of your companions you get affirmations and promises that they'll be down soon. Profectus seems to have woken himself fully, but he wants to eat something first. As for Mortia you don't really think she knows what she agreed to.
(1/3)
>>
Sadik wags a finger at you scoldingly. “The harm is you might run off and do something stupid if you find out what the jewel does. This is not an indictment of your personally, I can't claim to know whether or not you'd find the jewel useful. I'm merely familiar with adventurers, having been one myself for many years. If I were in your position, and I learned about the power of the gem, I would certainly run off to the north trying to steal it regardless of the trials I might face.”

If his goal was to deter you, he's failed. “Oh come now, Sadik. I've more important things to do than running off in search of some jewel that will most likely be gone by the time I maneuver myself into a position there I'd be able to take it without getting my head lopped off.” You focus, conjuring images of a vast jungle dotted with tall pyramidal ruins. “I'm headed for Elaudia, where I fully intend to spend the next few months delving ruins and doing my best not to get myself or my friends killed.”

The merchant sighs, reluctantly giving in. “Fine, if you must know it's a phylactery. I'd hired a man I once knew to retrieve it from an old Rhynian facility in the eastern mountain range. A tribe of elves had been worshiping it as the embodiment of their patron god, getting it wasn't easy. Anyway, once he got the phylactery he vanished, and I've been trying to get it back ever since.”

You don't see why you'd go running off after a phylactery. A valuable artifact certainly, but not something worth dropping everything to go find. Then it occurs to you that he never actually told you who's phylactery it was. “So why do you want this specific phylactery so badly? You must have been hunting this thing for years.”

(2/3)
>>
He nods. “I have, and for good reason. It contains the soul of a very, very powerful Vatis. From a time before recorded history. The knowledge he has would be invaluable, and I fear that it's this knowledge which has led largely to the success of the warlord currently occupying much of the eastern mainland. On his own, I doubt he would have been capable of assembling an army, let alone leading one.”

You get the impression that Sadik knows the warlord on a more personal level than he initially let on, but more than that you think he's holding something back. Focusing, you let your thoughts brush against his. Though you can't pick up anything regarding his thoughts, you do confirm your suspicions that he's worried, that he doesn't want you to ask any more about the topic, and that he's trying very hard to keep a straight face. “Come on, Sadik. Just who exactly did the phylactery once belong to?”

He throws his hands up into the air, obviously frustrated. “Fine! Fine, it's the First Emperor. The founder of Rhynia is sitting inside a fist sized ruby trapped by his own flawed spell. I'd be willing to bet my life that it's the Emperor who's really pulling the strings, that the warlord is just a pawn. I want the gem for my own purposes.”

>Just what would his own purposes entail?
>He's told you what you wanted to know. Best not to irritate him. Excuse yourself and go take that walk.
>You know maybe he was right after all. The soul of the first Rhynian Emperor might be worth a detour...

I don't think it's ever actually been stated. He's fat, which would be pretty irregular for Samjan, and he's not particularly tall. However, nor is he short. He's at least six feet tall, which is huge by the standards of contemporary humans. You've never seen his ears, since he keeps them under wraps, but he's usually dressed in a manner you'd typically associate with Samjan. He's also really dark skinned for a human, but light skinned for a Samjan.

>>
Sadik is the one that created the chimera.
>>
>>44472006
Supposedly there are artifacts that the state possesses which determine that sort of thing, but Mik's never actually seen one. Usually known half-breeds are born to human mothers, because it's pretty obvious when a kid born to a human isn't entirely human. If it's a kid born to a Samjan mother, then it's a bit harder to determine. Maybe the kid just has something wrong with him, maybe they're just light skinned, they could grow into their ears. That sort of thing. Usually they have to be accused or caught fraternizing with humans. Often merely being on too friendly terms with a human male is cause for suspicion.

Most commonly, Samjan women who have halfie kids are prostitutes or street walkers. Most self-respecting institutions won't even let humans or elves onto the premises, which is why Prof got thrown out of that whorehouse he tried to go to. However, the stereotype of streetwalkers (and the reason they're reviled) is because they're known for taking anyone with cash. Human merchants tend to have a lot of cash.
>>
>>44472117
>or anyone who cared about that law enough tk want to do so
While few civilians are likely to try taking the law into their own hands, half breeds are pretty universally hated by Samjams. Filthy degenerates.

>Oh, is that what you're fighting over? Yeah, spirits are totally weak to physical attacks. I mean, weaker than they are to non-physical attacks. Nonphysical attacks like a blast of flame or trying to rot their 'flesh' will do less than nothing, more likely to make them stronger than kill them.

>But stabbing them in their core with a broken pencil will kill them in one hit.

And for dragons, enchanted ammo with something like "Large Blood Transmute to Iron" would put them down hard. It'd put anything down that's biological.

Yeah, I mean. They're basically the same thing. They're born as more or less the same entity (a larva). It's just that spirits are corrupted by mortal nonsense.

I mean, in a way they're matter and antimatter. A lot of the same physical laws apply but if you bring them into direct contact shit blows up.

Actually there are void entities that have two cores instead of one. They're impossible to oneshot.

That literally doesn't change anything. That just means there's no citadel in their shell, in maritime speak. Immense physical trauma will do the job just fine, and for large, heavily armored spirits to lighter, evasive spirits, the superior ballistic characteristics of railguns shells to crossbows or magic will win the day. It's a portable siege weapon for god's sake.

>>44473400
I'd wager that the "large" in the enchantment would have great ability to do damage and would ground dragons, removing their mobility.

In both cases, railguns would give us the potential to do huge amounts of damage for very little Vys cost.

You must admit, Sadik was right to keep this under wraps. You can't think of a single person who wouldn't want to have a conversation with the founder of the Rhynian Empire. From what you understand he usurped the power of a city-state's ruling council and in the space of one human lifespan, an insignificant stretch of time by Samjan standards, conquered much of the known world and more than that established the necessary infrastructure and bureaucracy to support an empire of that size.

Most of the stories surrounding the First Emperor are shrouded in mystery and uncertainty, as he lived before writing was widespread and few records of that time survive. Those that do often offer conflicting accounts of the man, who he was and what he accomplish. Some claim the “First Emperor” never existed at all, but rather the process of turning Rhynia into an empire took place over the course of centuries.

Seeing the progress that the Elven warlord has made over the course of only a few months, uniting the elves under one banner and starting his conquest of Provincalis, you're inclined to believe the founder of Rhynia really was just one man. The warlord seems well on his way to recreating his accomplishments.

Still, you can't exactly drop everything to go north and deal with this, nor would you want to anger Sadik. Though you're not sure what he intends to use the phylactery for, you'd rather remain on his good side. “Well rest easy, I have no intention of running off to steal the orb.” The Paramatma is probably more knowledgeable anyway, what use do you have for the founder of Rhynia when you have access to the sum knowledge of all of Hiacia's greatest enchanters?

Sadik takes a deep breath, and with effort manages to relax. “Of course, I apologize. The theft of the jewel still infuriates me even now, decades after. Did you want to take a look at my wares?”

You don't see why not. That head poking out of the pile is really bugging you. Is the entire body shoved into the pile, or is it just the disembodied head? “Sure, but tell me if I'm seeing this right. Is that an golem shell?” You point out the metal globe, adorned as it is with a single glass eye and some strange metal protrusion jutting from its chin.

The trader's characteristic grin returns as he grips the metal head, drawing the rest of the golem. It's not like the Rhynian models you've seen. It's far more feminine, for one. The upper body seems to be made of metal, and metal seems to reinforce the shell throughout, but most of it seems made of... well, some sort of polished gemstone. Perhaps saphire, but if that were the case you would expect it to be translucent. It could be lapis, though you can't imagine lapis would be an ideal material to craft a golem body from.

The hatch where one would place a core is at the top of the head, and currently open. As expected, there's nothing inside. The head itself is only bound to the body by a few thin strands of metal. You wonder if it's made of Elaudian Steel? Could it be the Elaudians were experimenting with golems in much the same way as the Rhynians were? “Where did you find this?”

Sadik shrugs. “A friend retrieved it from a ruined facility in the mountains, locked away in a pod. He sold it to me when I came across him, since he didn't want to keep lugging it around.”

You make a note to point it out to Fulvia later, and then help him lug it back onto the pile before diving back in for that scroll tube you saw earlier. As you grasp it, Sadik frowns. “I'm afraid I cannot let you open that, friend. To do so would be bad for both of us. Perhaps if we had not met in a place so-” He glances around the courtyard. “-populated, it would not be such a cause for concern. Know that should you place a scroll inside detailing a magical technique or spell, the tube will read those directions and carry them out once opened.”
>>
>>44473677
Chryssa aims the railgun using her Deathmask. Fulvia or Mik uses metal magic and feeds projectile after projectile through the tube. The Railgun has no need for reloads and can spew out as many shells as Fulvia has the vys capacity to make. Considering how she can literally send waves of spikes, anything on the business end will die very shortly.
>>
You glance down at the scroll again. Seems like it would be useful to test the accuracy of written directions, but also seems fairly short sighted. What if you open it and it creates a portal to the void, or some sort of all-consuming torrent of fire? “So what scroll is inside it currently?”

Sadik shakes his head. “I'm not sure, but when I last opened it I turned a half mile of desert into an immense hole in the ground.”

Definitely not something you want to open then, you set it back gently and turn your attention to the pile...

I've got a query for you boss. All this talk about the Railgun has made me realize it could potentially be an extraordinarily powerful weapon; could it be too powerful? You mentioned before a year ago, when we were discussing magitec flight, that you'd put in place artificial research obstacles to limit potentially destabilizing magical research or techniques. However, from what we know, the Elaudia has swallowed up multiple element GMs. Would the railgun be suitable for our task at hand and a reasonable precaution for the foes in it? Or have you expected us to come up with more?

File: Strange Ball.jpg (153 KB, 1280x720)

153 KB JPG
You dig through the pile, feeling your hand alight upon something which feels like wood. As you wrap your hand around it a surge of power runs up your arm. You jerk your hand back on reflex, finding in your grasp a solid lump of carved and polished ebony. The fragments of the outermost layer of wood, lighter in tone than the rest, have been carved into patterns of vast complexity, thin lines connecting each blossoming collection of patterns.

At the top of the orb is a slight divot from which originates a bright blue glow, though you see no obvious source for it. Light seems to stream from this central point in the cardinal directions, dividing the orb into four quadrants. You press your finger into the divot and find it's the perfect size for your thumb to fit inside, and pressing down you find that the wood has a significant amount of give.

Holding the ball of wood up so Sadik can see it, you pose a question. “Just what is this?” You honestly couldn't even begin to guess, and you don't want to press down on the top and have it burst into a field of harmful magical energy.

Sadik grabs the wooden ball, dragging it closer to him, and presses down on the top. Black seems to pour from the ball, forming a puddle of ink on the floor of the courtyard which drags itself up into a vaguely masculine figure. It is entirely featureless and roughly a foot shorter than you, but staring at it for more than a few seconds makes your eyes hurt. Sadik releases the ball and clears his throat. “Fetch myself and Mikhael cups of wine.”
(1/2)
>>
The figure seems to vanish, fading into Sadik's shadow, and reappears a moment later with two cups filled to the brim with red wine. You take yours, nodding your head in thanks, and the figure just sort of dissolves away into thin air. Sadik loudly slurps his wine and then smacks his lips, sighing. “Useful little device, the creatures it creates are exceedingly efficient at resolving simple task. I've heard you're not supposed to assign them anything too complex though.”

Two more artifacts to go. Probably going to do them together since they'll both be short.
>>
>>44474733

Enchantments with repel X don't cause the enchanted object to move when exposed to X, so one can infer that a railgun created with consecutive rings of repel iron would not move when exposed to iron. That is, it would have no recoil.

Gee whillickers, I wonder where the heat from Maximillien's beam attacks came from. I wonder where the light and energy from Rhynian lanterns came from and their entropic effect on the balance of energy and matter in the universe. I wonder how Rhynian generators continue to produce constant megawatts of energy by converting void materials.

Physics gets raped everyday in Mundus.

>Incredibly simple
There's no bullet rune anon, bullets are a fairly complex thing that would probably not be easily created through enchanting. That said, it would be very valuable to have such an enchantment. Simple channel a negligible amount of vys and the gun will never run out of ammo or even need to be reloaded. The only downside is that to create such an enchantment we would have to enchant something, which is never going to happen.

You set the ball of ebony wood to the side, where you can easily reach it. The ability to create as many servants as you need to for any number of task seems useful, though if they can't speak that could limit their usefulness. Did they just steal this wine?

Well, regardless it's pretty good wine. Not the watered down swill you'd usually expect them to serve in the mornings. Delving back into the pile of junk you feel around, constantly paranoid that you're about to stab yourself in the hand on some poisonous blade. You don't, and instead feel your fingers brush across something cold and hard. Dragging it out of Sadik's cart you find yourself holding a large glass vial reinforced with gold and dotted with enormous sapphires. The glass itself has a slightly blue coloration, leading you to wonder if it is itself made of the precious gem.

You carefully remove the glass stopper, but it's devoid of contents. Channeling vys into the vial doesn't seem to do anything at all, so instead you try drawing water from the air and pouring it into the flask. A soft hum seems to fill the air but nothing is remarkably different about the philter or the water it's now filled with. Sadik's voice draws your attention away from studying your reflection in the largest sapphire's many facets. “Drink it, then you'll understand.”

Drinking from random, obviously magical containers doesn't seem like a good idea at first shake, but you've done worse. Raising it to your lips you tip back the vial and are surprised when from the cool glass pours a substance which burns like fire. It slides down your throat with agonizing slowness, you almost feel like you should be chewing it.
>>
>>44475558
Suffice to say, Skullkid's schedule is booked and he's running a backlog. We can make better shit that doesn't need a supply chain with just one or two meditations.
>>
>>44475545
For a weapon that just flings large volumes of metal, in any shape, where they could be cylinders, blocks or anything like that, with only structural integrity and density mattering, it wouldn't even need to be a fucking bullet. Just some runes that create condensed iron.
>>
When finally you get it down, strength floods your limbs. It's a strange sensation, as though with a gesture you could hurl Sadik's cart to the opposite end of the courtyard. Gripping it by its wooden edge, you try to just tilt it a little. It doesn't move, much to your disappointment, but you definitely feel stronger than you were before.

“Bought it off of a bhataki billing it as a love potion.” Sadik shrugs. “Doesn't seem to inspire any feelings of fondness, but it does transmute whatever one pours inside into some sort of portion of strength. The more you drink, the more pronounced the effect. Unfortunately it has some pretty severe drawbacks as well. The amount of strength you gain corresponds directly to how tired you are afterwards, and the more you drink the shorter it last.”

You suppose that's sort of useful, but if you ever need an immense amount of force applied to something you can just call on Chryssa to take care of it for you. She's supernaturally strong all on her own merit. You set the sapphire bottle aside and shove your hand back into the cart, this time coming away with something else almost immediately.

>>
>>44475589
Ok, but what about the correct shape and gunpowder? We're talking about the namek guns here not the railgun. The railgun would be easy to create ammo for, but requires that we enchant a railgun. We already have the namek guns, and the suggestion was that we create an enchanted magazine that supplies unlimited bullets.
>>
>>44475612

Clutched in your palm is a delicately carved scarab inlaid with what you think is emerald, or perhaps jade. At the center, where its head joins its abdomen is a gold plate carved with a depiction of the sun, leading you to believe it might be carved in honor of Surya, but the jade seems to be carved in floral patterns leading you to believe there might be some tie to Nature magic.

You flip it over and find on the bottom a long, sharp needle carved from the same material that's inlaid along the scarab's surface. It's at least six inches long. Perhaps some sort of stabbing weapon? The needle certainly looks sharp enough to puncture a skull or two, though it would seem awfully fragile.

Sadik once again offers an explanation for what the artifact is and what it does. “Dragged that one out of an old ruin in the Pa'vala, a tomb. I think it was a funerary pendant carved and enchanted for some forgotten Hiacian nobleman. You stab the needle into your flesh somewhere, usually the diaphragm, and it will constantly heal your wounds. Fairly rapidly too. Probably not much use for a Water vatis, but it could be the difference between life and death someone less skilled. I wore it for years, but these days I haven't had much use.”

Interesting, so this is something that Sadik himself dragged out of a ruin and apparently made extensive use of. Still, you'd typically associate healing with Water magic. You don't see anything which suggest water carved onto the scarab's surface.

Why don't we check the runes on the scarab before we buy it?
>>
Well, you're definitely not interested in the vial. To you it's pretty much useless. The ball and the scarab might be useful though. You could give the scarab to your sister to keep her from getting herself killed, or give it to Prof for the exact same reason. Actually, recalling Profectus laid out on the muddy ground of the battlefield with a hole torn open in his side and packed full of mud, he probably could get a lot of use out of the scarab.

You focus on the present, picking up both the carved wooden ball and the scarab. “So just what happens if I give one of these shadows a task too complicated for it to complete? Does it just dissolve into thin air, go on some sort of killing rampage? What should I expect?”

Sadik rubs his chin contemplatively. “Once I asked a shadow to get me an artifact, a sword, from an old crypt on the outskirts of what was once Rhynia, the city I mean. What I wasn't aware of is that to get to the burial chamber you needed to complete the missing portion of a runic array an activate it, task which neither I nor the shadow knew how to complete.”

Sadik leans against the side of his cart, folding his arms in front of his chest. “A couple days later I started to hear about children going missing in the village where we were staying, and the day after a few of the town drunks vanished. By the time I went to check up on the ruin and the shadow's progress, I found that it had called forth several of its kin without my knowledge and together they'd created some sort of sacrificial altar at the bottom of the ruin, just in front of the door into the burial chamber. There had been corpses everywhere, probably hundreds of them. To this day, I have no idea what they were trying to do.”
(1/2)
>>
If you had to guess they were probably hoping that killing enough people would weaken the veil enough that it would tear and thus tear a hole in the door, or otherwise somehow provide them access. That's just a guess though, and not even a particularly educated one at that. “How much are you asking for it?”

Sadik simply shrugs. “Forty gold, as I said it's useful for simple task but perhaps not worth the trouble in the end.”

A good deal, that's only six hundred silver. You could easily afford that. “What about for the scarab?”

The portly merchant stares at the carved stone beetle for a long while before finally naming his price. “Eighty, I think. More directly useful than the box I'd say. Maybe not for you, but for one of your companions certainly. Plus there's a certain sentimental value attached.”

You hold up the scarab. “Sell this hard to my companion, Profectus. He's the elf with the stone arm, I believe the two of you have met in the past. He needs something like this, and he has the money to afford it. I, on the other hand, have nearly pissed all my riches into the wind and need to practice something resembling care in how I a lot my funds.” Not exactly true, you haven't pissed your money away you've mostly invested it. You're really just exaggerating for effect.

Setting the spiked scarab back inside Sadik's cart and instead holding up the wooden orb. “This on the other hand seems useful, but the problem is I'm not sure it's useful enough to merit dropping six hundred silver on. I was thinking more in the neighborhood of two hundred, if that. I mean, what am I really going to do with it other than have the shadows fetch me food and drink, as well as perhaps play a few pranks on unsuspecting passer-by? If it's first solution to any and all problem it can't easily solve is ritual sacrifice on a mass scale it's not the most useful of artifacts.”

Sadik frowns deeply. “Ritual sacrifice isn't always what the shadows choose to do. Once when I was visiting Conwe, that's the Aleamondian capital, I asked them to find someone and take me to them. Well they found that someone, and they tried to take me to them, but the guards wouldn't permit me entry to the castle. The shadow vanished and I thought that was the end of it. Instead I woke up in the comte's bed with the man himself tied up in a corner and his wife nowhere to be found. Took days to find the poor woman, she'd been dragged off into the forest and left there.”
(1/3)
>>
Okay, that really doesn't make a lot of sense. Why would they get rid of the Comte's wife, and why would they tie the man up? Why would they put Sadik in his bed? Still, this helps your case. “You know, you're really not making these shadow servants sound any more appealing. Do you really think this hunk of wood is worth six hundred silver?”

He sighs. “Fine, fine. Four hundred. That's a fair offer and don't try and claim you can't afford it. I'm practically giving it away at that price.”

You channel vys, and catch a brief snatch of a number drifting through Sadik's thoughts. Three hundred. Is that as low as he's willing to go? Is it just his next offer? You can't be certain, but you think you can get him to go lower still. “Two hundred is really as much as I'm willing to spend. I'm sorry, you know I like you Sadik, but that's all I can justify for a glorified toy like this.”

Sadik stares at you for a few seconds before finally offering you his hand to shake. “Three hundred and you have a deal, twenty gold is a nice round sum.”

You shake his hand and the money changes hands. You find yourself suddenly in possession of a carved wooden ball which summons shadow figures from thin air to do your bidding. That out of the way you glance towards the foyer, surprised to see your companions still haven't come downstairs. Reaching out to them via the brooches you experimentally touch your thoughts to theirs. {Is everything alright up there?}

Mortia responds with uncharacteristic urgency, especially considering the time. {I didn't do anything! I swear! Mik you gotta tell them-}

Darzi abruptly cuts in, her irritation practically flooding your thoughts. {One of the slaves assigned to Mortia died last night and the other is trying to blame her for it, babbling about blood sacrifice and evil rituals. Don't worry about it, we'll be down soon.}

You seem to recall Mortia, stripped bare, standing above the kneeling form of a human slave with a gash across her chest caked in some strange salve. You never did figure out what that was about.

>Well if Darzi has it handled you'll leave her to it, you and Zahak still have a walk to go on.

You stare at the ball of carved ebony in your hand, your thumb hovering above the glowing blue center. All it would take to summon some shadowy monster given to kidnapping and ritual sacrifice is to press down. You could just tell it to take care of the issue and go about your merry way. However, somehow that feels like a bad idea. You feel like you might regret that later. With immense reluctance you tuck the ball of wood into your cloak and instead start to march towards the palace's foyer.

Your thoughts reach across the distance between you and your companions as you begin to ascend the stairs, your destination Zaahir's suite. {I'll handle the issue, just get rid of the slave and I'll have her reassigned to some other task, and a new slave put under Mortia's command.} It shouldn't require more than a brief conversation with your brother to accomplish that.

As you reach the top of the stairs and come to the door into your brother's suite, you recall that you haven't actually told him that it's safe to return to his rooms. You ask one of the guards stationed outside which room your brother is staying in and get directions, then wander the halls for nearly ten minutes searching for the room in this immense building. Even when you find the right room and rap your knuckles across the wood it's not your brother that opens the door, but his very pregnant wife dressed in a long gown.

Hasna informs you that Zaahir has gone out to the gardens to enjoy his morning, but when you get to the gardens you find them empty. A slave tells you that he's gone out to the courtyard to see Sadik, but then Sadik tells you that your brother wandered off only a moment ago to find his head slave, the man who manages all his finances evidently. You'd forgotten how tedious it could be to find someone in an estate this large. Eventually you find your brother in his solar, discussing the budget with the elf you recall meeting when you'd first arrived.
(1/2)
>>
He greets you warmly, throwing his arms around your shoulders. “Mikhael! I hear you've already met our friend in the courtyard. The man peddles some truly marvelous artifacts, doesn't he?”

You wave your brother off, impatient after the trials you faced finding him. “Yes, yes. Indeed he does. Anyway, I trust you're aware that one of the slaves assigned to Mortia died last night?”

Your brother nods. “Yes, well aware. We were discussing that earlier in fact. We'll likely assign someone else soon but we've had trouble picking a proper replacement. Why do you ask?”

You briefly explain what you know, which isn't much. “Well the other assigned slave erroneously thinks Mortia had a hand in the slave's death.” Sometimes you really wish you'd bothered to learn their names, but it just seemed like so much pointless effort. “I'd appreciate it if you'd reassign the other slave as well, just bring in two new slaves and be done with it.”

Your brother quirks an eyebrow and glances back at the head slave, the elf. “That's odd.” He turns his attention back to you. “She was found in a cell in the dungeon with her torso hollowed out and most of her organs missing.”
