Your name is Thomas Cairn, and you were finally starting to get your life figured out. That is, until you managed to blow it all up. You're dad left you a legacy as the Red Rider, and you carry it as the Red Knight, a hero for a modern age. You had your own company, a suit of power armor, an AI assistant, even a girlfriend. You had a great life. Then an unlucky invention put an end to that. It was just supposed to even out some pressure systems, you didn't know it would end up blowing up like Independence Day.

In a flash of blue light, your life was stripped from you, leaving you in a plain room with an intercom blaring. The headaches don't help, and you're pretty sure you're off your meds, meaning this could all be in your head. Were you thrown out of time into another era? Is this some messed up dreamscape deal? Did aliens save you?

The white light burns your eyes as you lean up from what appears to be a hospital bed, though there is an odd quality to the sheets that you can't pinpoint. You stand up and are immediately hit by a splitting migraine as a voice assaults you.

"Mr. Cairn, please take it slow. You have been in a medically-induced coma for approximately 30 months as your body healed." What the fuck happenned!? Who are these guys? Are they lying? Why aren't you dead? There was a flash and you just...

"Why did you put me in a coma!?" You blurted out something again, but you just can't stand it. Something is very wrong. This is setting off alarms in your head, like a smoke detector attached to a room of speakers. The voice over the speaker coughs a bit while hesitating.

"Following a rather large... accident, you were found unconcious and near death at ground zero. There was evidence of other survivors, but we weren't able to extract them. There will be time to discuss this later, now you need rest."

There is way too much happening, you were at Grandpa's, you tried to stop a Supervillain with a device an- What about Jeana!? You were supposedly out for almost two and a half years! She must think you died! Oh fuck, is Grandpa still alive!? Mom must be devestated! Is the comppany okay!? Did RON keep it running, did Fibin!?

"What was the accident and on a scale of one to ten, how on fire is everything?" Last time this happened you could have nuked the city, so it's probably a good idea to get a gauge on how messed up this was.

"Well... it's not on fire, that might have been preferable. Tell you what, lay down and I'll go over what happened, it's kind of a long story." You get back in the hospital bed and prop your head up. "You were at the epicenter of what is officially regarded as a freak case of ball lightning, but was actually a large explosion. The odd thing was, it only actually destroyed a small are around the center. Could have been uneventful if there weren't... side effects." The voice clears it's throat and goes on.

"A trend started to emerge, Comet City and all areas within about a day's drive had an uptick in Supers, a massive increase. The current ratio of Supers to normal people is 1:10, don't ask how we got that info. As you can imagine, this took a toll on much of the infrastructure as many new vigilantes and criminals roamed the streets. Of course, this led to the mandate that established the FSA. FSA stands for Federal Super Acquisitions, basically we keep the peace when normal law doesn't. This all seems to point towards whatever happened with you causing this." This is a lot to take in. Maybe this is a lie, but it's all you have to go on.

"But there is good news. Cairn Industries and your little pet project of outfitting Superheroes managed to help those who wanted to help, and Dr. Acci kept your seat warm. Heck, there's a statue of you in the Business District. But enough on that, get some sleep, you have to start therapy soon." The voice seems to be avoiding something and clearing it's throat a lot.

"What about Jeana? What about my family!? I WANT A LINE OPENED UP TO RON RIGHT NOW!" This guy is withholding information! Something could've happened to Mom!

"Mr. Cairn, calm down. I can't let you call y-"

"FUCK YOU! TELL ME WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM!" The light above your head starts flickering a bit.

The voice sighs and you can hear a pause as he begins reciting a case file. "Name: Jeana Graham, Sex: Female, Cause of Death: Stab wound to chest, no evidence found, cameras show no killer, just his shadow. I'm... I'm sorry Mr. Cairn." You can hear him start to choke up.

Another person you loved lost to your ghost. First your dad, now Jeana. You remember the road trip where you sung together in the car, when she helped calm you down after you stopped a mugger. You feel the tears in your eyes running down your face, they aren't tears of sadness. This isn't a healthy mental state. You don't feel anything other than rage at one singular entity. Menace. Maybe he thought this would draw you out, like you were in hiding or something. Now he needs to pay. He has been a constant shadow over your life for too long.

Maybe you could bring her back. You remember Wo saying he died before, he looked alive when you saw him before. There may be hope for you to get her back yet.

You start crying, this is too much, you could have saved her, you should have saved her. You should have given her some protection, bodyguards, something. But thanks to you, she's dead. Menace needs to die, but this does provide insight on him. He can't be messing with time if he was still visible on film, so he must be psychic. You can work with that. Time to get to work.

She's under surveillance at all times by the FSA. My codename is Crack, but you can call me Joe. "And why is that Joe?" This reeks of bullshit, there has to be some reason they're barring you from leaving. But being angry isn't getting you closer to revenge, so you need answers.

"Uh... I don't think you want to know right no-"

"JOE!"

"FINE! I warned you. Don't say I didn't." A panel opens up in the wall and reveals a pane of mirrored glass, you sit up and walk towards it. It shines reflective light from the ceiling into your eyes, but you walk up to it and inspect yourself. The first thing you notice is a crisscross of stitches along your forehead, then you follow the line down. It wraps around your neck and down your back, then hits your waist and circles your midsection. You start to get the feeling that something is very wrong and you inspect your legs.

They appear to be covered in stitches and staples, enough to make you wonder if they were anymore than ground beef originally. You reflexively gasp.

"If it weren't for some of your own inventions, you would have never walked again."

"Mr. Cairn, I can't, that isn't my call. Even your nanobots could only help so much, this is the best modern medicine can do without outright prosthetics, and we didn't have your consent on that front at the time."

"Either I'll escape on my own terms, or you let me out." He coughs out something, then mulls it over a bit.

"Mr. Cairn, I'll do what I can, but let me get one thing straight. This is the regional base of one of the nation's strongest paramilitary organizations, if you think you could escape, then you're even crazier than the Psych Department tells me. Let me be clear, you were at the heart of the nation's biggest destructive event in over a century, I think some caution is due."

The intercom shuts off and the light dims to a dull glare as the mirror slides away. You are fuming, Menace needs to be stopped. Maybe you could dig up that Nano-limb schematic you made and put it to use. Your body failed you, if you didn't need medical help you could have been there for Jeana.

You take a seat with your legs crossed and start breathing, all this anger accomplishes nothing. You begin clearing your mind and focusing on one goal, one ambition, justice. You need to find a way to make sure this never happens again. You feel a weight lift from you, a fog clear, and are left with a single feeling of determination. A drive to stop this monster. The way to do that is to play nice and try to get this finished, then you can get your payback. You open your eyes.

The room is mostly unchanged, save for a desk acroos the room, a bookshelf filled with books to your right, and an end table to your left. On the end table is what looks like an alarm clock, and looking at the shelf reveals that it is filled with various books on academic subjects and some fiction. The desk holds something that fills you with joy, a tablet computer with what appears to be a program of your design open. On further inspection it is a new version, but definitely an upgrade, Fibin must have improved on your coding.

This must have been here, your eyes were shut for about ten minutes, no more. You need your meds the next time Joe is on.

You set to work on the tablet and checking the alarm clock, find that after about 4 hours you are done with designing a pair of Nano-legs for you, the cool thing is that the limb could even come to similarity in shape to normal legs. You could jump higher, kick harder, and run faster. Of course, there seems to be a rather large drawback involving other bodyparts below the waist, inluding designing in a new urinary tract. This probably isn't something to do lightly.

You stare over at the alarm clock and start to reflexively rub your hands together, you don't remember doing it before, but it feels natural. There are so many options for such a versatile machine, but you settle on a rather passive-aggressive use. You start fiddling with the wires to the speaker, and eventually find the right circuit to accomplish your goal. You finish up a white-noise generator, keeping the clock intact. This shoould fuck with any audio surveilance when activated, a big middle finger to Joe. He'd have to talk to you face to face.

You put down your makeshift tools and wipe your eyes, feeling very tired.

Yeah, but knowing the meaning of something and being able to use it are two different things. Like being able to write the word "fish" and being able to write a sentence containing the word "fish".

Writing.

You start searching for bugs and cameras, but after a solid hour of scouring the room, you can find none other than the intercom. Even using your powers, you find only the line connecting the intercom to a microphone and speaker a few rooms away. That leaves two options, either they actually trust you, or there's something else watching you. You don't know if maybe it's magic, a psychic, maybe something entirely different. There's nothing you could really do about that though. You know a few runes, but you can never get them to do anything, even the one you know is the same one used in your Dad's Lab.

You try to puzzle out this problem so much that when you look at the clock it reads 8 AM, and the lights brighten. The intercom roars to life.

"Mr. Cairn, I have talked to my superiors and they are willing to provide a lab, but they still need to perform psych evals, physicals, and multiple biological tests to make sure that nothing dangerous has occurred. This will mean that you will leave your room, but please be less combative, we are taking a large risk letting you out of this room. Don't blow anything up."

"Joe, before I finally get out of this cell, I need some things. I need a meal with protein, my meds, and I want to be able to see my Mom at least once."

He pauses for a bit, probably thinking it over, then the speaker crackles again. "I can guarantee at least the first two, and I'm pretty sure that I can swing the third. It was encouraging that you didn't start building a bomb or trying to escape overnight. You seem to have made a full recovery in regard to behavior. One second, I'll be down there soon." The speaker falls silent and you wait in your chair at the desk.

The door, originally concealed in the panelling, opens up to reveal a black man wearing a white labcoat and holding a plate of what looks like bacon.

"The cafeteria had breakfast already up, sorry if it's a bit cold. Intel is searching for your prescription in the archives, and the request has been filed for a familial visit." He seems rather okay, but first impressions can be decieving.

So basically your gamble is that they might be bad guys.
If they are bad guys we can find out while infiltrated.
if they aren't, well they aren't and we didn't become criminals.

But if we escape, well one one hand good on you if bad guys. But if good guys? You just became a criminall wanted by the federal government, all your assets are freezed and you need to escape the country since you literally depend on resources as a genius superhero.

"How do you know I didn't try to escape? I didn't see any hidden cameras or bugs."

"That's kind of the point of a hidden camera Thomas, wouldn't be very effective if you could see them." He has a point, but it still seems fishy. You eat the breakfast anyway, cold but better than nothing, and it isn't half bad. You're still a bit tired, but nothing you haven't done before.

"Follow me and we'll get the physicals out of the way." He takes you out of the room into a hallway that looks exactly like it and leads you to a room on the right wall. This one is less synthetic, containing what appears to be a very good rendition of a stereotypical therapist's office, all the way to the leaning couch.

"Just take a seat and we'll begin." You sit on a chair and Joe goes through all the standard tests on a physical, then he reaches the psych eval.

"I'm going to ask a few questions, please answer them truthfully. Have you ever seen something or someone that wasn't there?"

>"Yes, I saw a guy who said he was from the future, I'm still not sure if he existed."

"No, but I didn't see the furniture in the room until I calmed down." He jots down a few notes, then looks up.

"I see that the rest of these questions have been filled by a Professor Brend, I can also see evidence of the same problems, that was simply another one that was added. So, we need to keep an eye on that. We took blood samples and scans while you were out, so there's no need for any more of those. You should be good for some temporary lab space. It is a privelage, not a right."

"Joe, I've been meaning to ask, why do I still have stitches if I was out for about 2 years?"

"We actually only did the actual surgery three months before taking you out of the coma. The rest of the time was spent just fixing up your internals, took some serious medical expertise to fix them, but they worked fine. Then all that was left was to stitch them all shut." You can't tell if he's lying, but it makes sense.

He takes you out of the room to an adjacent door and opens it up, revealing a lab filled with equipment, but curiously lacking in chemicals. Probably still don't trust you with too much, which seems reasonable.

Bio and Supers have it.

Biology Tree:

>Gene Therapy: Using Bio-Meld and some techniques from Grandpa, Gene Therapy can be made practical and safe.

>Bio-Electricity: Research Bio-Electricity for use in future tech.

>Regenerative Therapy: Maybe I could puzzle out a way to fix up my legs naturally.

Artificial Supers:

Strange Blast: That blast supposedly caused Supers. Maybe I could replicate that?

Ancient Secret: Sage mentioned something in Tibet, maybe a field trip is in order?

Genome Analysis: Somehow, I feel drawn to the idea of designer Superpowers. Maybe I could select the power given?
