You are Tsukuda Ryouta, a Shinigami of the 12th Division, an investigator of abnormal occurrences.

You are currently investigating the disappearances of three Shinigami within the Human World's New York City. The complete absence of bodies very firmly implies that a Hollow is responsible, but apparently this particular specimen is capable of hiding its spiritual presence entirely, a quality that is thankfully almost never encountered among the soul-eating creatures. The fact that the Hollow has never appeared on any relevant monitoring equipment, and the fact that only one out of the three Shinigami was able to put up a fight at all against the monster seem to confirm that ability, though why one of the ambushes failed at all isn't entirely clear as of yet.

While looking through the local news, you've stumbled upon a series of murders that targeted a specific family - the Kelseys, with the crimes quickly resulting in the death of all direct relatives. Considering that a couple of deaths in that same family have occurred before the main streak of homicides, it's reasonable to assume that a Hollow is responsible for those crimes, as it aligns with their natural instincts to attack their family and loved ones first and foremost. Considering that the Shinigami responsible for the area in which the attacks had happened was not able to spot the presence of any foreign spiritual beings, it is highly probable that this is the same presence-concealing Hollow that then went on to have the three agents of the Seireitei as its prey.

The Shinigami who oversaw - and still does, technically - the area in which the Kelsey family resided is currently standing in front of you, thinking about your request for help.

"Yeah, I'll help." He declares after a short pause. "If that thing decides to suddenly change locations, and its new location just happens to be mine... Well, let's just say that I'd rather not participate in that lottery." The man hops off from the invisible platform up in the air that he himself has built using a speck of spiritual power, leveling with you on the rooftop of an apartment building. He offers you a handshake, which you take him up on.

"I'm Soren, Tenth Division." He introduces himself without any sort of friendly or polite flare to his tone; all matter-of-factly, business-like. "Make sure you'll get a good word in for me if my little Captain asks why I abandoned my post, alright?"

Despite his serious tone, he seems to joke, or so you think, as he doesn't wait for your answer. "Let's check the Kelsey places first. I'll lead you there. Most of them have been ransacked already, with one exception. I think the very first one, before the murders... what was her name?" He seems to struggle to remember, so you mention Hannah Kelsey, the person who died from a disease about a month before the murders have began, and Soren nods, continuing.

"Her place is still in order, untouched ever since, as far as I can tell. We should go there and check it out, see what we can find." He suggests. You wonder if it would be more efficient for the two of you to split up and look for clues that way, but he shakes his head.

"I don't know what to look for, so you'll need to drag me around with you if you want me to be of any use. I guess I'll be the... the Watson to your Sherlock, Ryouta. You do know of those two, right? Well, let's get going. Give me the rundown of what you've found so far."

You tell him about the clues that you've discovered as the two of you hop over air on your way there. Soren listens quietly, without any comment, only nodding infrequently to demonstrate his still present attention. You reach the house in about ten minutes.

"Here we are. Kelsey Hannah's flat." He presents the humble home with a gesture, offering you to take the lead this time. Hannah's place is nothing special when it comes to size or luxury, and there isn't much of note here. The owner has been dead for more than a month, but the house is still in good condition, with hardly any dust littering the desks and shelves. Someone must be taking care of it. You find pictures taken with a camera decorating some of the walls and furniture, and while nothing stands out about them, you realize a detail.

"She doesn't have any pictures of her family." All of the photographs depict a young woman with red hair - most likely Hannah herself - and a tall, imposing, but in a bizarre contrast to his intimidating appearance, immensely happy dark-haired man, like a gentle giant. Judging by the rings on their fingers, they appear to be married or at the very least engaged.

Soren, after a few seconds spent in thought, nods. "Perhaps she disliked them. Whatever her reasons were, I think it's fair to assume that Hannah is our Hollow, and that she targeted them out of her grudge."

The timespan of a month is not enough for a soul to naturally degrade into a Hollow, but the only other death to have happened before the crimes occurred mere days before them. Perhaps something happened to Hannah's Soul Chain that led to a much swifter transformation. Perhaps the 'suicide' was only made to appear that way at a glance.

"You never found the souls of the Kelseys, Soren?"

"I did not. I guess it's true that the suicide wasn't real. Or the Hollow somehow found the soul before I have. If I got a look at the body, we'd know for sure, but... it doesn't really matter anymore, does it?"

He's probably right.

"You've mentioned wanting to take a look at the camera footage at the Atlantic Terminal, didn't you? Well, let's go. I have a way to get past the guards." Soren says, leaving the flat by phasing out through the window. You follow after him.

The guard is still sitting at his post. Soren approaches him, and, with a quick movement of the arm...

...Strikes the man on the back of the neck, knocking him out cold.

You look at Soren for a bit, not sure what to say or if anything is needed to be said at all, and he smiles and shrugs his shoulders. "Don't look at me like that. I'll go keep an eye out for anyone coming by. I'll knock them out, too, so feel free to take your time."

"I don't mind." You say, approaching the equipment.

"I can't tell if your monotone is serious or just deeply ironic, Ryouta." He says, stepping towards the entrance into the room.

...Well, he's already done it, so you might as well make the best of it.

You manage to find the footage of the relevant date, and, uncertain at the time you should be looking out for, you fast forward through the whole day as quickly as the equipment here allows. It takes a little time, but you find something that you think is worthy of note - the bulky figure of a man in a thick trench coat spent some time standing at the place where you found the dried blood, and then left without meeting anyone.

It's not a statement you can make with any amount of reliability - as indeed, it could be just someone else entirely - but this person has proportions that are highly similar to the man in the pictures back at Hannah's house.

"That's bizarre. I expected that guy to be dead, too. They seemed pretty happy in those photographs, so it's unusual for the Hollow to not have taken him out first and foremost. So is it not Hannah after all?" Soren comments, leaning against the doorway as he keeps an eye out for any humans that decide to approach this security room. "I've heard of a Hollow that uses the bodies of its previous victims as a lure. Could this be something like that?"

(1/2)
>>
>>44343337
If that Hollow is able to hide its presence naturally, then it could very well be the case. Could there be an alternative?

There's one more trail you could investigate. That hospitalized driver who got into an accident at the location of the second disappearance.

"How do we ask him questions? You don't have a gigai on you, do you?" He asks. You shake your head. "I can't think of many things we can do without freaking him the hell out."

Nevertheless, you leave the mall and head to the nearest hospital. After a small investigation, you manage to find the man who's here after a car crash. He sustained a head injury in the accident. As far as you could tell from reading about that incident, he didn't actually hit anyone, and his car took severe damage.

"Hm..." Soren ponders out loud. "I think I have an idea. I need you to write something for me in English, Ryouta, can you do that?" You find a slip of paper and a pen, nodding at him when you're ready. "Mr. Node, this is your doctor writing. The police are asking for a written description of the man that you nearly drove into. Just leave the note by your bed, I'll return to pick it up and pass it on to the police."

You then sneak the note into the patient's room when he leaves to the bathroom. Looking both confused and annoyed after reading it, the young man nonetheless writes down a description. "A tall man wearing a trench coat stepped out onto the road on a red light. I did not manage to react in time to stop my vehicle."

The description is the same. What does this mean?

"Was that the last trail you had, Ryouta? Well, what now? Have you figured anything out?"

...

"You've mentioned using the gigai to hide one's spiritual presence. What if the Hollow is using this man's body as a gigai to hide itself?"

Soren thinks over what you just said for a while. "You mean it hijacked its husband's body and is using it as a sock puppet? That's twisted... but I can't say impossible. A spirit doesn't even need a special power to do something like that. So the key to this lies with - or should I say in - this man."

You nod. But where to go from here?

"We have to track the guy down, and we need to do it really carefully, while keeping out of sight. If he really is a Hollow, then approaching him carelessly is going to result in another pair of disappearances. I think the best place to start looking for him would be Hannah's apartment again." Soren suggests, and you think he's right. You know the area in which this man most likely lives, but you don't have his name or address, and checking every single house under your designation would take too much time.

"Though, one thing's bugging me... It's clear enough that the driver actually ran into that Hollow instead of the guy. But why did it put itself into that position to begin with? That resulted in needing to have its body protected, and I can't see why it would want that." Soren ponders some more.

You think that explains why the second disappearance was accompanied by a struggle on that intersection - the Hollow had to leave its shell in order to protect the body it possessed, and that must be how the Shinigami spotted it - and then engaged it - without getting ambushed first. But the motives really are unclear. The driver couldn't have been the target, as he's still alive despite currently being in his vulnerable position.

(1/2)
>>
>>44344281
"The news said that the man got away safely, and that it was the driver who needed hospitalization." You contribute to the pondering. "I doubt the fight between the Hollow and the missing Shinigami lasted for long, but it couldn't have ended particularly quickly, either. Was he still standing that entire time?"

"I get what you're driving at, Ryouta, but a body can't stand without a soul."

"Could the man be still alive?"

"You can't have two souls inside a single body, Ryouta." Soren protests rather firmly, as if the conversation is growing too outlandish for his tastes. He seems annoyed. Probably because things really are turning out to be very bizarre. It's hard to gauge what's going on, even knowing as much as you do.

...

By the time you return to Hannah Kelsey's apartment, the sun is starting to set. The dark, rumbling clouds make for a grim scene. The air has gotten warm, a telltale sign of an upcoming storm. The large city is lit well enough that the dark won't be able to impede your investigation, but the visibility will still be considerably worse.

You find notes with weekdays and times on them, what you believe to be notes meant to remind the owner of the house of upcoming dates and events. The calendar has a few things marked on it as well. An abbreviation appears frequently on those marks - "J.W."

"Jack White." Soren has been reading through her letters while you were checking her desks and drawers. "The name fits, doesn't it? The name's mentioned a lot in her letters, though I can't read the rest of their contents."

This seems to be as much as you'll find here.

A telephone book does the rest of the job and provides you with the address.

"Well, let's take care of this freak." Soren closes the thick yellow book, leaving it on the desk he placed it on. He heads towards the window, but seeing you hesitate, turns around. "What's up? Are you coming with?"

...

"If you get too many Shinigami in on this, it's just going to make us easier to spot, reducing our chances. Two people is ideal for this kind of situation - one will force the soul out of the body, and the other will take the Hollow out from behind. Quick and clean, just as it should be. Nobody'll have to fight anyone." He says and gestures towards the window with a nod. "Come on, let's go."

He darts through the window, you following after him. By the time you reach the address, the skies have gone completely dark, and it's starting to rain.

"All the lights are out in his place. He's either sleeping or he's out." Soren says, moving closer towards the windows. "I don't see anyone. The bedroom's empty. So is the living room and the kitchen. He's out. Let's look around, maybe there's something that'll help us find him."

You search through the house, soon coming across the diary of Jack White, a 35 year old car mechanic. He's started keeping the diary two years ago, apparently as a means to cope with romantic feelings towards Hannah Kelsey that he believed would never be answered. Skimming through the diary, his expectations apparently turned out to be wrong and they've started a relationship, though the rest of the Kelsey family was hostile towards him because of it. They didn't mind, or at least tried not to.

One day, Hannah got ill. There is a lot more written in the diary about Jack's visits to her hospital room than in the rest of the thick tome. He described all kinds of details, like what presents he brought to her and why, what sort of mood she was in when he came and left, the weather, everything they ate, everything they've talked about... And he visited her daily over the course of at least two months.

"Maybe he realized that her days were numbered. I guess he wanted memories to hold onto." Soren says, sighing. He sits down on a chair and crosses his legs, listening to you read.

The entries stop abruptly, with the next one is on the next pair of pages, a couple of weeks after the previous record.

"Even though she died, even though she was buried, Hannah is still here with me. She's not vengeful or anything, like you'd expect a ghost to be. I don't know how this could possibly be. Nobody else can see her, so I think I've gone crazy. I can't tell anyone about this, but I still want to speak out somehow, so I'm writing here again. Hannah keeps trying to talk to me, but I'm too scared to answer her. I think I really will go mad if I do. I really want to, too. God knows how much I miss her."

"I decided to talk to her. The first thing she did was get angry at me for not talking to her for so long. It really is her! I'm so happy. This is a miracle! And so what if nobody else can see her? Everything else in my life is still just fine, so I don't think I'm crazy. And even if I am, whatever. I'm happier than I ever was since she passed away."

"Someone that nobody else could see, wearing black robes and a sword, was looking for Hannah today. She hid behind me, but then she accidentally moved through my skin. It felt awful, like my organs were getting pushed out, but she stayed hidden that way and the swordsman passed by. We're still together and nothing can separate us."

Soren shakes his head. "So he actually can fit another soul inside his body. How ridiculous. He's big in more ways than one, huh? It's abnormal for sure. Can't be healthy, either."

You continue reading. "I found someone else who could see Hannah - some gypsy fortune teller named Manishee, has her own shop by the mall. Said she could make it easier for us to be together, started pulling at the weird chain on Hannah's chest and almost ripped it off. It hurt Hannah, so I stopped her." You notice that the writer's hand quivered at the word 'stopped'.

"something strange happened to hannah, but she can still hide in my body. she does it all the time now. Death is coming closer a lot more often, but she can hide from it through me. it hurts, but it doesnt matter as long as we're together"

"hannah killed death or whatever that was. Tore it to shreds and ate it whole. nobody saw a single thing. I helped her. She was so happy and so am i."

A day before the car crash is the second to last entry in the diary. "we dont see each other anymore. she stays hidden all the time and only talks about killing the black robes. i dont like this anymore. i want to join her"

The last entry is today. "I've been wondering if this is the real hannah lately. I'll go visit her to make sure."

"Visit her... He must mean the graveyard. Where else would a dead person be?" Soren suggests, and you agree. "Think we should go after him, or is this a good enough spot for an ambush?"

By now, the rain pours in full force.

The graveyard is empty, soulless corpses as its only residents.

It's lit by pale streetlights, reminiscent of the moon's glow.

All that disturbs the rain's silent singing are the distant screams of a man. Life isn't fair, and neither is death. Everything about this world is cruel, its people and its rules. That shrill voice hates everything and nothing.

You hear Soren loudly exhale. He sets a quivering hand on his sword and grips the hilt firmly enough to stop. He's frustrated as well. He's not the Shinigami whose emotions should be killed; right now, he, too, is just a man displeased by the world.

You can't say you share his sentiments. You feel as you always do. You've never had to kill your emotions like so many other people must do whenever they take up their swords. Your breathing is calm, your hands do not tremble, your heart doesn't waver.

You move towards the screams, soon finding the large man who's kneeling by the tombstone of his loved one, his shouting growing clearer but no more coherent than it was when heard from afar. His voice has grown hoarse and sense has left his speech. He's crying madly, pleading to the clouded skies above.

"Ask SS for permission to kill the human. We'll end this quickly." Soren says, his voice just as grim as his expression. He's ready to do what needs to be done.

You take out the Denreishinki and relay the gist of the situation to the HQ. In a matter of minutes, you receive the go-ahead. You tell that to Soren, and then propose that you kill the man whilst he slays the Hollow. He nods without protest, drawing his sword. "I'll know when you're done." With a single jump, he departs into the darkness, taking a suitable position for the plan.

You draw your sword as well. Your job will be much easier than his. You dash forward, your air steps devoid of sound, with only the disturbance of the pouring rain to give you away. But you're fighting a mere man - in his screaming despair, he could never hope to hear such a subtle noise. Even if he did, he stands no chance against the Shinigami.

With a single thrust, your sword easily pierces through his chest, claiming the heart and life in a single stroke. The air escapes from the kneeling man's lungs, cutting off his cries, and his body spasms once in agony before falling down. Your weapon withdrawn, you step back as well.

The next moment the monster moves out from underneath the human's skin like a massive parasite crawling out through the wound you've made in his body. The dead man is lifted back to his feet by the evil spirit's departure like a man possessed, but as the red snake-woman's thick tail splits from his flesh, he drops down lifelessly to the ground.

"HOW DARE YOU?" The woman shrieks, her furious face concealed behind the bone mask, the white shape of which contorts into an ugly and malicious grimace. Her palm alone is wide enough to span your entire body. She pins you down into the wet dirt, your sword pressed down against your own shoulder.

The Hollow's torso and the long black hair flowing from beneath its mask are human, but from the waist on is where that semblance ceases to be - in place of the legs is a wide, scaled tail no doubt able to crush a vehicle under its weight. Her fingers are massive and webbed, peaked by five sharp claws, each the size of a head. What was once a woman turns its head away from you and back to her companion. Unfortunately for you, that's the worst thing she could have done right now.

Her hand leaves you be, decompressing your body and allowing air into your nearly crushed lungs, swiping at the shadow soaring through the rain. You hear a smack accompanied by a pained hiss, and then a different, sharp noise, as if the air has just been cut. Soren lands next to you with a masterful Shunpo, offers you a hand and then, seeing your inability to rise instantly, drags you across the mud until you are able to. The Hollow was too distracted by the cut on its arm to realize what just happened.

"This is bad, but we can still pull this off. I'll keep it busy, you kill it. This thing is strong as hell. Must have been feeding on more than just the Shinigami." He nods at the dead man beside it. "Leave it to me! Rise above the other, Hashimaru!"

In a flash of light, the sword split into two western shortswords, each with a curved cross guard and a gem lodged into its hilt.

>SHIKAI: Hashimaru

>When one of these swords strikes or parries an attack, some of the expended force is absorbed and taken by the unused sword, increasing its power. "Damn it, Hashimaru's not that good when fighting against something they can't parry." You hear Soren mutter as he takes up a stance. The Hollow, still shrieking, lunges at him with speed unbefitting its massive size, turning into a red blur. The Shinigami responds not by leaping back at it in response, but by disappearing entirely from sight.

He appears by the monster's side, thrusting his twin swords into her arm. He draws blood, but the weapons struggle to cut through the Hollow's thick hide. Before she is allowed to perform a counterblow, Soren disappears again.

His tactic is apparent, but the strain of the Shunpo and the release of his sword will drain him quickly if he has to persist at it, but every injury that he inflicts is slowly healed. This is a losing battle that he can't afford to take part in for long.

As he fights on, you begin a chant, loud enough for your fellow Shinigami to hear. When the naga turns its attention to you, Soren forbids it by striking at the mask, keeping himself the primary target. When your incantation reaches its apex, your temporary comrade takes another blow, sending him flying through the rain. You let loose the spell from the tip of your palm as though it was a fiery arrow, the projectile crackling against the downpour as it soars into the beast's torso, bursting into a deafening mix of smoke and fire.

There is another shriek, this one not so much ferocious as it is pathetic. The creature never expected to suffer. It wails and claws at the dark cloud dispersing around it, seeking the person responsible for its anguish. And it finds only the man with the two swords, those ever-competing blades now wielding enough power to cut relentlessly deep into the sturdy flesh. The next lunge nearly claims an arm.

Soren is incredibly tough. You would have fallen after the first blow, but he's taken his second already and still stands. But he still fights a losing battle. The Hollow will break him with its next strike. It raises its massive limb... never again to lower it.

A cacophony of sounds haunts the graveyard. The pouring rain's silent rhythm is disturbed by the dripping blood of man and monster. The flesh still cackles from its disfiguring burns, trying to mend itself to no avail. The mask cracks and falls apart, cut in two by your keen sword, shattering into ever smaller pieces on the stone road.

The man, still living on despite a mortal wound, whimpers tearfully at the sight of his unmasked beloved. His black veins pump the remaining drops of dark, corrupted blood through his imperfectly healed heart, his sickly yellow eyes wordlessly bidding their farewells.

As the Hollow disperses, the man, too, finally lets himself pass away. You send his soul along into the next world.

"He was turning into a Hollow even as he was alive. It's unsurprising. The thing they were doing couldn't have gone by without consequence."

You nod. Soren's swords mix their shape together and return to their base sealed state. "That guy could have been a problem even in his miserable state. Good thing you went for a big enough diversion to make his interference an impossibility."

He seems to be praising you, so you say your thanks.

"Nevermind. So I guess we're done here, are we?" Soren sighs, completely spent. "Well, make sure to mention me when you're claiming that thing's bounty. I helped out a lot, didn't I? Yeah, way too much... Good grief..."

He begins a sluggish, unsteady walk, waving you a goodbye.

It seems that your mission is over.

Thanks for running! I really enjoyed the thread.

I wanted to cover more stuff and end on a potentially cooler hanger, but the posting went down! It can't be helped, I guess!

That was interesting. Gotta say, as a new person to this quest, you definetly have an interesting one here.
Although personally, I'd like to see what you'd do with a quincy quest, if only because of the number of Shinigami and Hollow one's we've played on /tg/

Thanks for reading!

I'm not entirely sure what I'd do with a Quincy quest, unfortunately. The only ideas I currently have for them are as supportive characters or antagonists. It's a bit of a struggle for me to think of something for them that couldn't be done by having the MC in the role of a Shinigami, especially since I've already covered the human side of things in a different quest. Shinigami are simple and easy to come up with stuff for, but I'm worried that if I tried doing something with a Quincy quest, it'd be like a Shinigami quest but where you shoot Hollows with a bow instead of stabbing them with a sword and not hanging out in Soul Society. Maybe one day I'll come up with something cool and big, though, but no promises there!

I like that the quest is more psychological horror than shounen, it makes the Hollows actually feel like a threat.

Any hints as to what the cool hanger was supposed to be?

It was supposed to have ended with Urahara about to reveal his real goals.

Oh, nice. excited for next thread.

I'd say it would depend a lot on using your enemies strength against them, rather than relying on your own strength. That, and depending on the time period you'd be much more your own man. Playing the heir of a pureblooded quincy house would be like a mix of game of thrones and bleach. Can you make your house supreme among the quincy, without bringing the Gote down upon your head?
>>
>>44348596
I'd say it would depend a lot on when you set it
1000 AD: The first war. You fight the first generation of the Gote.
1000-1750: Quincy recover, then expand in numbers: combination of internal maneuvering, trying to avoid/deter the Gote, and hunting hollows.
1800: You're on the wrong end of a war of annihilation. Expect a really depressing war story and moral ambiguity.
1820-1990: Picking up the pieces of a second war with the shinigami. Again, avoid notice from the Shinigami while trying to pick up the pieces.
1990 +: Yarwch, you killed my father, prepare to die.
>>
>>44349020
>Yarwch
I would like to see everyone fail to spell, much less pronounce, Yhwach's name. I mean, I already have no idea how to do it, is it yuh-watch? Probably not. But that's as close as I can come.

I have the worst timing
