Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you had knowledge imparted upon you by an ancient artificial hivemind.

It is currently the 24th of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH.

The stench of your own burnt flesh mixed with a note of intoxicating sweetness drifts through the interior of the claustrophobic chamber as the needle withdraws itself from your forehead. The pain is unbearable, and though you try to scream all that comes it is a wet gurgle. You're choking on your own blood as it pours from your fracturing, filling your lungs as you struggle for breath.

Then the pain subsides as the needle draws fully from your skull, dark black blood and some strange gelatinous white substance dripping from the glowing crystalline tip. You feel as though wrapped in a warm blanket, your aches washed away as vys rolls over and through you. The tip of the needle goes dim, submerging you in darkness, but only moments later you feel yourself being shunted forward.

You spill out into the light amidst a flood of silvery grey metal. It rolls off of you like water, sliding across the floor in the form of a thousand little semi-solid droplets. The light outside is blinding after the darkness of the chamber, but you feel hands gripping you by the shoulders. You're rolled over onto your back and those same hands search your face, and then your chest, for some hidden wound. Upon finding none you hear more than feel a sharp slap ring out through the room.

“Fucking Mikhael!” Someone shouts in frustration, their footsteps receding as they march away. Finally your eyes start to adjust to the light spilling into your brother's study, and you see Profectus leaning over you with a slice of fresh bread sitting flat on the back of his hand while he smears butter across it with a blunted knife.

>>44332169

>>
>>44332176
Nope, because you're nowhere experienced enough in Earth magic to pull this off with Earth alone. You'll need to erode your soul and then, because you lack sufficient control, reinforce your soul with Metal magic to prevent it from shattering completely.

>>

>>
>>44332249
Those usually have bad side effects and Soma usually likes to knock us out afterwards, plus we won't know how it'll interact with the Sphere.
>>
>>44332240
That's basically what you'll be doing, except you'll only reinforce once you're 'down to the grain' so to speak. Once the shell is exposed you'll reinforce it so you don't accidentally erode too much.

>>44332256
Yup. That would most definitely end the quest. Well, I might do a timeskip a few months/years to Mik waking up in some ancient ruin with (some of) his companions standing around him, they having dragged him to some spirit/ancient temple/whatever that promised to restore his soul (for a price of course). Depends on how badly you failed the roll.

A pang of hunger strikes you as you watch Prof shovel half the slice into his mouth. “No, I haven't had the chance. Unfortunately I fear there's no time. You see I've just learned of a way that I might free myself of the Entity's influence. I'll likely need your help to accomplish what I must without shattering my soul completely.”

He takes another bite, speaking with a mouthful of food. “I could get everyone gathered up while you eat, if you want. I have nothing better to do.”

You push yourself into a seated position, surveying the room. A loaf of bread is laid out on your brothers desk beside a jar of fig preserves and a thick slab of what's probably camel butter judging by the color. There's also sliced sausage and a bowl of fresh olives, although how your managed to get fresh olives at this time of year is a mystery to you. They're not usually harvested until Santi or Kapani.

You think you'll take Profectus up on his offer, if only to spare yourself from dying on an empty stomach. “Sure, you go gather the others. I'll relax for a while. I did just have a needle shoved through my head, after all.”

He ruffles your hair affectionately before wandering off towards the door, leaving you on the metal-coated floor of your brother's study otherwise alone. You wonder if they'll have to lift you up and place you inside the orb at the end of this, since you'll probably expend the entirety of your vys reserves in the process of eroding your soul.

(1/3)
>>
>>44332658
>He ruffles your hair affectionately
best
>>
Regardless you pass the time enjoying the bread, sausage, and olives. The metal starts to evaporate after a few minutes, and by the time Profectus, Mortia, Chryssa, Fulvia, and a very reluctant Darzi reenter the room all that remains of the once immense puddle of liquefied metal is a small pool at the base of the ramp leading up into the orb's central chamber.

You pop another olive into your mouth, chewing around the pit and spitting it into your palm before dropping it back inside the bowl. “You're probably confused, so I'll take a moment to explain. The orb allows enchanters to upload a copy of their minds into a sort of vast collective consciousness established outside of reality. I communed with the collective and learned that the Entity is not actually dwelling inside my mind, but rather is simply attached to my soul by a thin cord.”

You toss another olive into your mouth, relegating it to your cheek while you continue talking. “Unfortunately this cord has grown intertwined with my soul itself, so I need to erode my soul and the shell around the shard of divinity at its root until they collective can safely sever the cord without shattering my soul.”

Darzi is quick to offer protest. “How do you know this collective isn't just going to rip out your soul and subsume it? How do you know it can even deliver on its promises?”

A good question, you shrug your shoulders in response. “To be perfectly honest, I'm not entirely certain that they don't intend on subsuming me as part of their collective. However, I've spoken with them at length and they certainly seem knowledgeable regarding a wide range of subjects. I trust that if any being in existence has the ability to free my of the Entity's grasp, it's them.”

It occurs to you that Chryssa is probably far more experienced in Earth magic than you are. “Chrys, how often have you been meditating?”

(2/3)
>>
>>44332658
Don't forget the gauntlet and meditative aids.
>>
She cocks her head to one side, face expressionless. “Once a day, sometimes twice. I feel as though I have hit a barrier in my advancement of Earth magic. No matter how often I meditate, and no matter how much I focus, I feel as though the insight I need to achieve the next level of mastery slips through my fingers. I have sought to address this by reading when I get the opportunity, but as we've been traveling I haven't had the chance lately.”

It sounds to you as though she's ready to achieve Grandmastery, but the idea of having your friend meditate on eroding your very soul in her attempts to master her own art is unappealing. You know from experience how hard that final meditation can be, and how dangerous.

>You'll have Chryssa attempt to attain Grandmastery by eroding your soul and the shell just enough for the Collective to sever the Entity's connection, with your other companions supporting her.
>Submitting yourself as a test subject for your friend's experimentation seems unwise. You'll take care of eroding your own soul with your companion's support, even though you're less experienced than Chryssa.
>You'll let Chryssa perform the meditation, but you're going to give her every advantage you can. The stone sleeve, the meditative aids, absolutely everything you possibly can give her to ensure that she succeeds.

When we did our meditation, a large bonus we had was from how the veil of reality was weak in the GM meditation chambers. I'd like to suggest that we erode the veil now to further Chryssa's chances. So it looks like so far things have shaken out this way. Chryssa is going to have:
(+4 from Fulvia's Vys Pool, +6 from Master Earth Vatis, +6 from Meditative Poultice, +6 from Draconic Vys Pool, +8 from Stone Sleeve, +12 from Assistance, +12 from Meditation Method) for a total bonus of +54.

The DC is going to be:

(Base DC 60, +8 from Poorly Trained, +6 from Small Vys Pool, +2 from Distracted) for a total of DC 76.

You stare at him impassively. Eventually he relents and passes you a small slip of paper which he's prefolded along the top and bottom third of the page. You glance over it quickly. The gist is as he described; so long as you have not broken the laws of the realm you ought not be detained. However, there is a clause in the middle which states that, should you commit an offense worthy of banishment, you should be executed rather than detained and branded. Signed at the bottom is the Shah's name, Kadir El-Amin, in flowery script.

Really, letting Chryssa do the meditation is just the logical thing to do. She's far more experienced than you are. However, that doesn't mean that you can't give her every single advantage you possibly can. “Chryssa, here's what I'm thinking. You need to perform one last grand meditation to achieve total mastery of Earth magic. I think the problem of removing the Entity from my soul presents you with the perfect opportunity to perform this final meditation.”

You seems to pale, but her expression remains unchanged. “Are you sure that is wise? I have not been properly trained, nor is my vys pool large enough to recover from setbacks in the process of the meditation. I worry that I may falter and consign you to death, or some worse fate.”

Truth be known you share with her those fears, but you're not going to tell her that. “I have confidence in your abilities, Chryssa.” You lie through your teeth. “Certainly more confidence in yours than my own. I barely understand Earth magic at all. If anyone here is suited to help excise the entity from my soul, it's you.”

She squares her shoulders, drawing herself up a little taller. You turn your attention to the rest of your companions, hoping beyond hope that Chrys really is up to the task. “I trust that the rest of you will be supporting Chryssa in whatever capacity you're capable. Either supplying her with vys, or helping to control the process with your own talents for Earth magic. This must be a collaborative effort, I can't stress that enough.”

Profectus sticks his thumb up in the air, a gesture he's picked up from Skull Kid no doubt, while Mortia simply shifts her weight uncomfortably from foot to foot. Fulvia seems utterly impassive, as per usual. Even Darzi opts to stay quiet, perhaps a first for her. She seems like she might be feeling guilty about something. Finally it occurs to you that one important member of your party is missing, and you walk swiftly to the immense glass doors lining one wall of your brother's study. They lead out onto a broad balcony, perfect for a young Dragon to land on.

You feel Zahak's vague presence at the edge of your consciousness. He's some distance away, and distracted by something. {Zahak, I need you for an important task. Chryssa is going to be excising a parasite from my soul, and the meditation is going to be particularly difficult. We'll need you to assist.}

His response is cold, unemotional. Likely a result of the distance between the two of you, rather than the actual emotional tone of his thoughts. {I can be there in a few minutes, I was just hunting down the river for some breakfast. Is Papa alright?}

That explains why he's not near-by. {Papa is fine, this parasite has plagued me for quite some time now but its effect upon me has been minimal. Get here as soon as you can, you'll be playing a vitally important role in the process of its removal.}

You pull open the balcony doors, to make sure Zahak can get inside safely, and then make your way over to where your companions have dragged a circle of pillows, with Chryssa placed at the one end facing the door and a wide space left at the other. You wonder if they knew you were contacting Zahak?

Reaching into your cloak you extract the Forest King's Crown and the Stone Sleeve. Just to be safe, you rest the Forest King's Crown upon your head and feel your consciousness expand, your perception seeming divorced from your physical form and instead observing not only yourself and your companions, but the guards outside the door and the commoners milling through the streets below from nearly every angle. There is no unpleasant sensation of power being forced into your mortal form, merely an overwhelming sense of calm.

Confident then that the crown won't put Chryssa at risk of being taken over by hostile spirits, you rest it upon her head. She flinches, apparently not having heard your approach, and reaches up to touch the crown. When instead of explaining you offer her the hollow stone arm, she's forced to speak. “What are these for, Mikhael?”

You step inside the circle, withdrawing the pouch of meditative poultice from your cloak as well and setting it on the floor between you and Chryssa. “Various artifacts I have in my possession which enhance either meditation or Earth Magic. I trust they'll serve you well. You'll also want to take a pinch of the powder inside that bag and swallow it once Zahak gets here, that will further enhance your ability to focus. Once you've finished your task, I'll need all of you to put me back inside the orb. Understood?”

She slides her arm, more muscular than your own, with some difficulty into the stone sleeve. It expands to accommodate her arm comfortably, shifting unnaturally as it does so. Strange patterns begin to emerge on its surface, crawling across the stone and joining at confusing, seemingly impossible angles. Just looking at it gives you a headache. Chryssa at least seems no different than normal, though she is staring wide-eyed at the wall above you. It's likely that she's not used to the expanded perception afforded to the wearer by the crown.

You allow yourself to sink into a meditative trance, your stomach twisting itself into knots of worry at the thought of having your soul toyed with and ripped apart by someone other than yourself. Finally you feel the floor shake violently and the unmistakable rush of air that accompanies Zahak landing anywhere, this time accompanied by glass cracking. Hopefully your brother can get his windows fixed without too much difficulty. You feel his mind reach out for your own, plagued by worry, and you try to impress upon him soothing, relaxed thoughts. He curls into a heap behind you, in the space left for him, and you open your eyes.

Your companions are all staring at you, save for Chryssa. She's probably staring at everyone simultaneously. She's taken a pinch of the meditative poultice and placed it on her tongue. It won't be long before she starts carving through your soul. “I want all of you to know.” You begin as Chryssa slumps forward. “Regardless of what happens here, I've enjoyed traveling with each of you. I can only hope to find such a fantastic group of men and women in my next life.”

Privately, as you close your eyes and begin to let your consciousness slip away, you reach out to Zahak. {As for you, Zahak. I want you to know that I truly do consider you my son. If something happens to me, I want you to fly back to El-Amin and find Master Karim. He'll take you in, and raise you as I would.}

You feel an overwhelming sense of emptiness strike you as Chryssa begins her work, panic seizing you upon realizing that you can no longer remember where you are. You suppress that panic, and focus on remaining calm and keeping yourself centered as Chryssa shears off more and more of your memories. The first thing you lose is context. You can't recall why you're here, or for what reason you left El-Amin. Then you begin to feel your recollection of recent events grow less and less distinct.

>GREAT SUCCESS

You next become aware of yourself standing on a black plane. Next to you is an three-headed conglomeration of a man, a lion, a bird, and a chimp. In front of you is the Entity's facade, its true form not illuminated by the light of the stone ball hovering above the Chimera's topmost head.

The lower mouth grins a predatory grin, while the upper mouth speaks. “I was not expecting you back so soon, and with the interloper's connection appropriately weakened. You work quickly.”

The orb above its head momentarily blinds you as it cast the black plane in sharp contrast, the immense living corpse of the near-god looming above you. Where as before the connecting tether between the true form of the Entity and its facade had been thick and healthy, throbbing with power, now the fleshy tendril was desiccated. It looked as though a stiff wind might reduce it to dust. Presumably it represents the thread binding your soul to the Entity's own.

Your contemplation is interrupted by the voice of the Collective. “Shall we begin? We warn you, the process of removing the thread shall not be pleasant and the process of copying your soul and mind even less so.”

>Yes, you're ready to join the collective.

I don't believe in raising the difficulty artificially just to make things dramatic if y'all have bothered to prepare and put in the effort to make things easy. Alright, let's have a useful discussion instead of shitposting about waifus. Now that we've excised one of the party's largest mental vulnerabilities, it's time to look at the second largest: Profectus'. He's got a whole walk in closet of skeletons, and that battle where he nearly died because of void entities stirred up some of them. In Nazir, around the river and the desert, there's plenty of spots to spend a day relaxing by racing camels or boats. We could try to get Prof to open up to us there. Call it another beach day. And Chryssa can show off her grandmastery by building another massive sand castle even.
>>
>>44335778

Darzi shook her head solemnly. "The terrain wasn't in our favor. One of their Vatis collapsed a side of the cliff face onto my command, killing most of my soldiers then and there. After that archers and a Fire Vatis attacked us from above. Finally bandits swept in from around a bend in the canyon while we were trying to take cover in the rubble. It was over quickly; we didn't have a chance."

Darzi sighed heavily, rubbing her eyes wearily. She'd gone over the event a thousand, ten thousand, a hundred thousand times in her head. "I should have had men scouting the rim of the canyon, but it's not a route known for banditry. I wasn't expecting to encounter enemies until much further in. I should have grown worried when my forward scouts did not report in, but they were only supposed to do so if they spotted trouble. I should not have taken such a large force, it only served to attract attention." She shook her head. "I should not have let them take me alive."

That's how she view her capture, taken from the scene with Mik's mother and step mothers
>>
Time for ultimate power.
>>
>>44335901
Here we go. An actual counterpoint. Prof keeps his mental issues bottled in deeply. At some point in the godforsaken jungle we're headed in, we're gonna meet the Nature spirits who've manage to basically mentally dominate an empire equal to the Rhynian's. If Prof continues to hide his issues instead of addressing them, he'll be left vulnerable. We aren't the most suited to this task, but we're the only one who can do it. Prof won't just walk up to another person of his own accord for support.
>>
>>44335902
She also claimed in the same scene that she didn't have the hots for Mik. Reliable Narrator indeed.
>>
>>44335817
As much as I'd like to tell you to fuck off, for once I'm in an agreement. Weren't we heading off to some desert to remove the entity/regain sanity? Well now we don't have to make that trip. How about a game of Siege! against Chryssa? haven't had a time were we could play a wargame within the quest.

Think of it like this. Every day, 22 United States veterans commit suicide. There's an aura of machismo inherent in the armed forces, and asking for support is counterpoint to that image. They can't appear weak. They're our soldiers, indomitable, and our shield against tyranny and fear; all that good shit. Prof is a soldier; not only that, he's a Rhynian soldier. The guys who conquered the known world. But Prof has seen some pretty bad shit Soma is repeatedly telling us he's not taking well. Not only that, he's lost a lot of people. Every so often, we'll communicate with our friends via brooch overnight; and everytime, Prof is going through some major shit in his head at night while sleeping. He's hurting, and as his friend, we need to help him. Arguably, since we're the only ones consistently awake at night, we might be the only ones to know. Fulvia might know too, now that I think of it, though she's not exactly the mending type.

If later on I manage to gather enough new information to merit being copied a second time, what happens? Will there be another, older version of me or will the older and younger versions of myself fuse?”

The lower mouth smiles wider. “Should you merit being copied a second time in your old age, which considering you are but a boy it is quite likely that you will need to be copied again if you live past one hundred, then there will be two of you. Three technically, considering your mortal form will still be wandering the Gods' creation. It is not unusual for an enchanter to join us several times. One particularly long lived enchanter joined with us seven times. Typically the most recent copy will assume a sort of leadership over the younger versions of itself.”

That strikes you as so odd, but at the same time you're relieved that your sole contribution to the collective doesn't have to be your knowledge of history. “Then how do we begin? I'm as ready as I'm ever likely to be.”

You feel a tugging in your chest, and simultaneously the tether joining the Entity's true form to its much less intimidating, though still warped and distorted, facade grows taut. As rips begin to appear in the cord, immense clouds of corrupted yellow vys spilling into this black plane, you watch the Entity beginning to stir with no small amount of apprehension. Its rotted mouth spreads wider and wider, until a horrendous screech tears its way out of her throat.
>Vys Pool: (-2/[0])
(1/3)
>>
One immense clawed hand reaches up to the tether and grips it, pulling roughly backwards. The tether snaps soundlessly and you feel a surge of lethargy, as though the life is seeping out of you at a rapid pace. Your skin grows cold and pale, a sweat breaking out on your forehead as you watch the Entity's facade collapse into a heap like a puppet with its strings cut.
>Vys Pool: (-4/[0])

You feel the creeping lethargy slow and eventually stop as vys stops spilling from the shorn tether. Suddenly the Entity, and its facade, are gone. They were there a moment before and now they've simply vanished with the only evidence of them having ever been there a hazy cloud of yellowed vys. Soon that too has vanished, and no evidence remains of the interloper at all.
>Vys Pool: (-5/[0])

The lower mouth speaks while you struggle to catch your breath, despite not having exerted yourself at all. Your limbs feel like dead weight, a painful tingling sensation dancing up and down your arms and legs. “You should brace yourself. Though drained as you are, the pain of being copied ought to be minimized. However, we can safely guarantee that the pain will still be immense.”

You try to steady yourself but your body doesn't want to respond. You feel like you're lost control of your own body, given up control to someone else. The ache in your chest grows worse, metastasizing to your back and abdomen. Soon your entire body feels like it's on fire as the seconds turn into minutes and hours. The chimera paces around you in a slow circle, simply watching, and when finally the pain starts to abate the orb hovering above its head expands.

(2/3)
>>
You realize slowly that it was not an orb, but rather the event horizon of some sort of portal. You feel yourself being drawn in, but it's not you. It's an imitation of you, indistinguishable from your actual self. You're being ripped slowly in half as the copy slides towards the portal, your other body remaining rooted firmly to the 'surface' of the black plane. When finally your two bodies separate entirely, one flying towards the orb, your perception splits.

For one brief moment you perceive the world from two different vantage points, and then the second is destroyed as it drifts through the portal. You're left standing alone with the Chimera, your other self vanished into the slowly shrinking portal. Finally the pain starts to subside, and you sink to your knees.

The Chimera comes to rest next to you, one of its strange hands with its elongated fingers coming to rest on your shoulder. “Be well, Mikhael. You are we and we are you.” The lower mouth declares. “It will take some time for the collective to incorporate your memories, but we assure you that your knowledge will be put to good use.”

With that you're shunted forward, and the loose grasp you had on consciousness slips away. You do not know how long you drift between life and death, your soul reduced to little more than a smoldering ember by the events of the day, but eventually you feel silk against your bare skin and a a cold, wet sensation over your forehead. Cracking an eye open you find that someone's dragged you to your room.

(3/4)
>>
You've been stripped of your clothes and there's a wet rag pressed against your forehead. Beside the bed is a tray containing a steaming pot of coffee and a small plate of cookies coated in sugar. You pull the rag off your head, wiping your face free of dirt and sweat and setting it aside atop the tray, next to the coffee. You're not sure how long you've been asleep, but the sun is only just beginning to peak over the horizon. You're afforded a wonderful view of the sunrise over the dunes from your window.

You sit up, and reach over to the tray. Pouring yourself a pot of coffee your brush your thoughts along the various connections established between you and your companions, as well as your son Zahak. He's near-by, awake. In fact you think he's only in the next room. He seems vaguely worried but overall content. You're sure that your other companions have been reinforcing that you're going to be just fine.

Chryssa is still deep in the grips of dreamless sleep, you imagine she's been having a rough time recovering from the effects of the meditative poultice and channeling so much vys. Mortia's mind is similarly inactive, she doesn't really seem to enjoy the mornings quite as much as most people. Honestly her habit of getting up at noon baffles you. She wakes up just as most are settling in for a nap or some relaxation.

You have trouble getting a read on Profectus, he seems half-awake and half-asleep. Troubled as well, his mind is veritably bathed in negative emotions. Darzi seems similarly troubled, but at least you can tell she's awake. You catch vague snatches of worry and perhaps self-loathing. At least Fulvia's mind is its usual incomprehensible presence looming at the edge of your thoughts.

You decide as you sip your coffee, enjoying the sensation of warmth settling in your gut, that you'll reach out first to your son. {You did very well, Zahak. Were it not for you, I don't think Chryssa would have been able to remove the parasite as effortlessly as she did.}

You feel him brighten, a flood of happiness and relief rolling through your thoughts. {Papa you're okay! I was really worried when they put you in that floating ball thing because it smelled like blood and it felt wrong but they told me it was what you wanted so I let them and I was worried that I should have stopped them because you weren't waking up.}

The words seem to jockey for position, fighting to be the first to reach you. You try to calm him down as best you're able, but he really seems too excited to pay you much mind. {The Orb was a device which let me speak with a group of old, old Vatis far away, they copied themselves so they could join together as one. Now I'm part of that group as well, there are technically two of me.}

Zahak seems confused. {But only one of you came out of the ball, so how could there be two of you? Is the other one hiding?}

You suppose you shouldn't get too technical, he is after all only a month old. {Not exactly. The copy was taken far, far away. I'll probably never see the other me in person, but he exist out there somewhere.}

Your son still doesn't really seem to understand. {What's the point of making another you if the other you isn't around? Doesn't that mean it's just like if the other you didn't exist at all?}

How can you explain this in a way that's simple? {It means that I'll be able to influence a very powerful group, even if it's only indirectly and in a small way. Perhaps, later on down the road, it will pay off. We just have to wait and see.}

Zahak still doesn't get it, but he at least seems to accept that you know more about this than him and he's willing to trust your judgment. You reach out to your other companions, those that are awake at least, while snacking on cookies, and debating whether you ought to get up and get dressed. {I'm awake, how long was I out?}

Fulvia responds with her usual promptness. {You have been asleep for sixteen hours, eighteen minutes, and forty three seconds. Furthermore, you were in the orb for exactly three hours. After you were ejected your pulse was very weak and you were running a very high fever. Legata Darzi insisted that we transport you back to your rooms and see that you were cared for.}

Since when did Fulvia start calling Darzi 'Legata'? You suppose that's appropriate, since a Legatus would report directly to the Dux, but you don't recall her ever using that title before. {Well I'm sure you'll all be happy to know that I feel fine. I've recovered from the ordeal and feel stronger for it. I do feel like something is different though. Like my perception has shifted but I can't put my finger on how. Has Chryssa woken up yet?}

This time Darzi cuts in before Fulvia's able to speak. {Yes, but only briefly. She threw up and then fell back asleep. We had some trouble getting that rock... sleeve thing off of her arm, it was growing across her chest and up her neck, but we managed to eventually. Both are sitting out here in the foyer whenever you're dressed.}

You throw back the covers and crawl out of bed, finishing off your cup of coffee in one gulp. Your clothes are folded neatly on the bedside table, and they seem to have been washed. They smell like soap with a hint of sandalwood. While you're busy dressing yourself, you reach once more through the brooches. {I believe I will go for a walk and try to clear my head. I think that will help me figure out what's changed. Thank you, for helping me finally rid myself of that creature. I apologize if I seem distracted.}

Once you finally pull on your Grandmaster's robes and snag one last cookie off the tray you stride out into the foyer, finding Zahak curled up by the fireplace at one end of the room. There's evidence that someone else was here recently. A still warm pot of coffee, a half-eaten plate of flatbread and hummus, as well as the fact that your door is hanging open. However, you don't get much of an opportunity to think about it. Zahak comes crashing across the room, knocking over anything in his way until he reaches you.

You're pounced upon, crashing to the ground with a pile of leathery wings and scales. Zahak nuzzles his nose into your chest affectionately, waves of affection washing over you. You urge him off you reluctantly, spewing flame across his underbelly. Something he seems to quite enjoy. You excuse yourself with a note of reluctance and promise that you'll be back soon and the two of you can go flying, since you get the impression he's feeling claustrophobic inside like this.

Zahak follows you out the door and through the halls, even down the stairs. He manages to terrify quite a few servants, even though he only wants to be close to you. In the end you decide there's no harm in letting him come along for a walk, although he's not quite as graceful walking as he is flying.

Upon emerging into the foyer and making your way out into the courtyard you find a curious sight waiting for you. Trundling through the repaired arch into the courtyard is a cart stacked high with all manner of artifacts, balanced in a seemingly impossible fashion. The pile should collapse under its own weight, and yet it seems perfectly stable. At the head of the cart is a fat man with a well trimmed beard and a turban wrapped tightly around his head. He carries in one hand a long whip and in the other wields the reigns of the two camels pulling his cart.

The mysterious merchant Sadik, your old friend. A strange man at the best of times. He raises a hand to you in greeting as his cart, which it occurs to you shouldn't have been able to fit through the arched gateway to begin with, trundles to a stop in the middle of the courtyard. “Hello my friend! It has been too long! Too long!”
