You have always wanted to be an emperor. That ambition has burned dimly in the past, tempered by reality. Now the opportunity to realise your ambition has arrived and you are determined not to let it slip. Now is the time to build your empire and become an emperor.

Last Thread: You are the mercenary spellblade Saul Waise, in command of a mercenary company that is currently seizing a large amount of territory in the hopes of forming an empire. Last thread you recruited a small army, formed a plan, spent XP and stared at your Champion. Now you’re infiltrating Vitria.

Previous Threads: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Aspirational%2C+Aspiring+Emperor+Quest+Re

Next thread on Saturday 26th December at 5:30pm EST.

Rolls are d100 and the best of the first three posters. I may sometimes ask for more dice to be rolled by each player, but same rules apply otherwise. Please quote the post you are voting for or rolling against. Note there are hard-to-replace points that can be used to offset failures in rolls. Additional dice mechanics will be given a GDocs later.

As the Vitrians begin to set-up barricades and prepare to use the foundry as a defensive position, you consider your next move closely.

Terce was the biggest threat. Once she was dead her thralls would return to normal within a few days from the sound of it. You had a few ideas on how to kill the vampire, particularly as she wasn’t particularly dangerous by herself.

But once she was dead, what next? Although now some Vitrians knew you were here helping them, it was certain that the military was also trying to help. At best you might be able to sweep in and conquer the city at the same time you fell Terce, but at the risk of having to fight a lot of Vitrian thralls and also hoping that the Vitrian military doesn’t attack you as well.

Alternatively, you could try working with the remaining nobles or else replacing them with more sympathetic ones. If Count Argyle and the young Lord Tabeth lead a counterattack against Volante it could put them out of the picture, enabling you to seize power in the city. Alternatively, you could work with that pair and try to use them to gain leverage and influence over the city – you’d be a war hero if you were responsible for fighting off Volante’s army.

The final possibility, and one you didn’t discuss with your companions in case of the Vitrians overhearing, was to kill Terce and leave Vitria to fight by themselves. You could consider them an ally, but busy yourself with attacking Darlesia or else doing nothing. In the meantime, the Vitrian army will likely be worn down by the Taourans and you could hopefully sweep up the city at the cost of losing a large amount of the Vitrian forces.

Deciding it’s a good idea to have a solid plan in place before you set the city ablaze, so to speak, you decide on…

ASSASSINATION VOTE
All plans involves getting into the Commercia (probably via tunnelling into it from the bottom with Gnome’s help).
>1. Attempting to hide above or near Terce’s performance balcony and attack her when she comes out.
>2. Infiltrate the Rorek tower that Terce is in and try to assassinate her before her next performance.
>3. Gather up what forces you can, potentially your own military, and try a brute force assault. This is extremely dangerous given her thralling powers but would avoid any stealth issues.
>4. Custom

CITY VOTE
Once Terce is dead, you’ll…
>1. Seize the city by force with your army.
>2. Try to seize the city with politics/negotiation, using either internal nobles or the external nobles.
>3. Pull out and let Vitria wear themselves down against Taour, only to sweep in and take the city when they’re both weaker.

Because even if she hasnt begun singing she did thrall people to return every day to listen again. It goes to reason that she would tell her thralls to protect her. Pretty much.

Though negotiations wise trying to pull support now is the best move. Pulling out has an advantage in that it's easier to take.

It has a disadvantage in that it weakens our own military when we take the place because half the men we would have had is dead because they aren't as competent as Saul.

Assassination wise either really works but I find it best to avoid getting anywhere near her thralling attempts.
>>
>>44308911
>Most of them are gone now, so I'm salvaging what is still left so I can have fun.
You can leave then, having to 'salvage' the fun bits at the expense of the quest and other players and throwing a fit when you don't get your way is the fastest way to end this quest earlier than the last.

Dude, it was one guy who said nothing was going his way, so he isn't having fun. The idea that if he continues to not have fun he is going to quit really shouldn't be grounds for being angry. Telling the Qm why he isn't having fun is called feedback, something that he has continuously asked for. Also, nobody's insulting the QM or "throwing a fit." Well, except that one anon in the last post of the previous thread, which I don't know if it is true or not.
If it was, Aspir you probably owe PlansAnon an apology.

>>
>>44308998
Mysterious lord of dragons with a lot of weird rumours and stories going around about him?
>>
>>44308998
I kind of like the idea of just being that powerful dude who beats the shit out of our foes. Saul does seem to do that a lot.

The entire blasting the head off a talking foe, Chopping up the RSK knights. I think giving an image of the competent person who keeps peoples shit togeather works good.

Especially considering how terrible Parras is doing in the military affairs right now.
>>
You know if we're seizing vitria now we might be best served by making vitria our capital, ruler of vitria our primary title and our empire a vitrian empire. >Well, except that one anon in the last post of the previous thread, which I don't know if it is true or not.
He's misinterpreting an earlier comment - I mentioned part of the reason I quit was when I realised how ridiculous the character bloat had gotten. I spotted this when I started creating the character document (which was being based off the one from PlansAnon, so I didn't disregard it). Mind you, it's one of the smaller reasons - some people (including PlansAnon) are aware of the reasons I quit, given I emailed him at the time and apologised then.

In any case, can we give this a rest and resume the quest? You can resume this stuff after the quest if you like. Sorry it's taken so long to write the update.

>2 and 2

You make up your mind on your next move and scrub out the drawings in the dirt you’d been making. As you rise to your feet you brush your hands free of the dirt and notice Gnome approaching you. She does at least seem to be in a better mood now.

“If you’re going to wipe your hands free of dirt, are you going to do something about that mess in your hair?” Gnome asks you, hands on her hips as she stares at your now red hair.

“It’s fine,” you say, glancing over at Lynn and Maloric as they approach. “Are we ready to move?”

“You have a plan?” Lynn asks, looking between Gnome and you. “Should we get you a helmet before enacting it?”

You sigh, looking at Maloric, who puts his palms up in a disarming motion. You take that to mean they’re all ready and briefly go through the plan.

“Infiltrate the tower,” Maloric says slowly. “Should we grab some of the Vitrians if we’re going to do that?”

“It would be risky to have so many in the tower, but if they can get us in more easily then I won’t complain.” Not that getting in will tremendously difficult, you think. It sounds like you should just be able to fly up the tower and break through one of the doors. In fact, you didn’t even need to really enter the Commercia now that you think about it.

“Are we going to tunnel through the plate?” Gnome asks, staring up at the stone slab above her head with a frown.

“No, we’ll fly.”

And fly you did. The first step was finding a suitable location to infiltrate the tower.

We could build it up with the intent of making it the capital later when loyalty is more assured, with it right on the border it wouldn't be a stretch to keep it as "administratively" part of vitria. Maybe make it our "personal" domain too?

And most people think Vlad III was a monster, figuratively and literally in some cases.

The opinion on Atilla is pretty much universally "a rapist, murderer and savage".

>Target not met; you’ll see the effect of this over time

Sir Harold had mentioned that Terce did her performances from the tenth floor balcony, so you decide to go in relatively close to that. There’s a relatively large platform facing the docks, away from the Commercia, so you decide to make use of that. There doesn’t appear to be any guards watching this, and it’s not easily visible. You’re pretty sure you blend in pretty well against the tower’s façade as you fly up it, too.

Swooping back down you let the others know.

“So, you’re going to ferry us up?” Maloric asks, an eyebrow raised.

“It’s the fastest way,” you say. “Unless you’ve worked out how to penetrate the wards with your teleportation spell?”

“Fly away,” Maloric says.

Maloric makes little noise as you carry him by the shoulders.

“You going to carry Gnome up here with a princess carry?” he jokes when you let him down.

You carry Lynn up next, finding out he’s surprisingly light despite the armour.

“I’ve been meaning to ask you,” you begin to say and feel Ser Lynn stiffen as you begin to talk. “Err, it’s just about your helmet.” He remains stiffened. “How much does it interfere with your perception? I’ve always felt a little enclosed when wearing one.”

Relaxing immediately, Lynn answers in his lilting tone, “I have rather effective magical senses so it’s no trouble. Furthermore, the dwarves built in some enchantments to prevent my senses from being too affected.”

Hmm, if magic could have that sort of effect maybe you could get a good helmet then. After dropping off Ser Lynn with Maloric you head back down to carry Gnome up. She looks at you expectantly. You carry her…

I can just see the national symbol now. Two shields drawn and different pictures in each one.

On one end is a peaceful group of farmers having a feast with wonderful food.

On the other end is Saul blasting some soldiers commanders head clean off. With the words "Is this you?" Written under with a arrow pointing to the dead guy.

>>44309345
Politically speaking, again Vitria, not that impressive. It's never been a super power on the grand stage. Granted, neither has Harrowmont, but unlike Talon, Saul doesn't have the renown to distance himself from associating with Vitria so intensely. If we keep up the current pace we'd be better served growing Harrowmont's prestige alongside our own, rather than randomly relocate to it later after we've already established ourselves as a 'Vitrian' nation.

Keeping up the current pace is going to be hard with our most prosperous and populated territory constantly on the edge of open revolt. Heck once we're past the "contested territory" stage we might move past the "make things part of vitria" stage for separate territories, which gives a decent excuse for a separate capital while still taking advantage of making things "vitrian" while its most useful.

You could, though Saul would need somebody to actually do the formal side of magic as he'd be pretty terrible at explaining things. It'd be like somebody who does calculus in their head with no working trying to explain it to a high school student.

>2.

As you fly up the tower with Gnome across your shoulders you get the feeling that you’re doing something wrong. Mostly you get that feeling because someone is staring daggers at you from next to your head. Nothing is said on the flight up, which suits you just fine as you don’t really want to have another conversation about your hair being messy.

Hmm, maybe you should talk to Gnome about this later before it gets any worse.

As you set her down, you ignore the look of disbelief that Maloric gives you.

“So, what was that about?” Maloric asks you as Gnome steps up to the door, working her magic to open it.

“The general was merely carrying somebody of such large stature and weight in the most physically efficient manner possible,” Lynn answers for you.

You stare at the wall for a moment, you face perfectly straight as Gnome glares back at the short knight by your side. When she turns back to the door you shake your head with a smile and say nothing more.

The door opens without much trouble, but before you step in you scan the room inside. It’s a sitting room, if a large one.

>Target not met (no critfail)

There’s a few glasses strewn about the room, as though a gathering was disrupted suddenly. Dried red wine stains are on a rug to one side, along with shards of glass where the wine glass was dropped on tile. An open decanter of brandy accompanies several bottles of wine on the coffee table in the centre of the room. You doubt this room has seen much use for several days.

Unfortunately, although the room itself was empty you couldn’t be as certain about the rooms on either side. Maloric had acquired a sending crystal that contained a display of the floors of the tower and you knew that you could exit this room to either a banquet hall, which would then lead to the staircase up to the tenth floor where you suspected Terce was staying. Or else you could take the other door either to the servant wing on this level or to a staircase down a floor to where Lady Rorek’s suite was. Apparently the lady had issues with heights and had chosen a suite as close to the ground as her guards had allowed her.

You can’t sense any vampire or magic in use nearby. In turn, Gnome cannot detect any significant movement or magic nearby, including vampires, which was odd. The magic reinforcing the tower’s structure made it difficult to feel up or down a floor but she shouldn’t be so badly affected. The question was, do you go straight for where Terce is positioned, despite not being able to sense any vampires there, or do you go elsewhere and try to get more information?

>1. Go straight for Terce. The tower’s wards might just be screwing with your senses.

>3.

For all the precautions you take and all the use of magical detection before entering each room, they’re largely pointless as you don’t appear to be encountering anything or anybody as you make your way downstairs to Lady Rorek’s room. You do pass a few rooms with a rather uninviting stench, however. You’re not sure you want to open them so you don’t.

Unfortunately, Lady Rorek’s suite is one such room. It’s placed on the side of the tower facing the Commercia, which had forced you to track all the way across the enormous tower. As dusk begins to fall, worrying you as the nightwalkers will be more active in the tower, you screw your nose up outside the door.

“This Rorek was meant to be alive, right?” Maloric says.

“She was supposed to be the face of the ruling houses now. Perhaps she’s not in here,” Gnome says.

There’s only one way to find out, you think. Opening the door you’re greeted with a smell you’re only relatively used to, and certainly more concentrated than you’d like. The sight isn’t much better.

The floor is littered with bodies. Antique furniture and the enormous bed are covered in dried blood. Flies and other insects buzz around the room. The blinds on the far side of this otherwise luxurious suite are closed. There’s no live people to be seen here and if Lady Rorek has been making public appearances, she’s not here.

“It’s a dumping ground,” Lynn says, his voice still the same artificial lilted tone despite the horror in the room. Then he turns suddenly. “Behind us.”

You’d been so distracted you’d almost missed it. The complete lack of magical activity was no longer the case – in fact, it had ceased to be the case since dusk fell. The nightwalkers were beginning to wake up and look for their next meal. You could hear some cries of what you assumed to be the fodder and could feel magical activity moving in what you suspect was the lift well.

You’d just stepped into the floor where the nightwalkers were all sleeping, dead to the world during the day and magically inert. You…

>Now, see, that didn't answer my question. I get that this is an alternate timeline, now, but my real question is, are we ever going to get back to the original quest, or did all that effort just get thrown away?
The answer is hopefully we'll get to return. There is a large contingent who really prefers Talon over this new guy. Even if its only as a sidequest where Talon just steamrolls everything for lols and stress relief.
>>

>1. Make for the nearest stairwell and get the hell of this floor.

For Talon to come back it'd have to wait for this reboot to ends, either by reaching it's goal or by getting scrapped like the original AEQ.

I honestly dont know why everybody loves Talon he seemed Self-inserty to me and through the quest the only traits of his I recognized from him as a character was just that alot of women wanted to have sex with him and he liked fluffy tails thats about it.
>>
>>44310920
Honestly for me given all Talon had by the end and how the plot was going it was pretty obvious what was going to happen next. So I was kind of glad to switch to someone new it would just feel like a long ass ending arc if we kept at him for too much longer.
>>
>>44311001
He's fun escapism. I come here to have fun, and I have fun playing Talon. My jury is still out about Saul.
>>
>>44310057
aw shits it's already 3 years ago
>>
>>44311014
I'd be fine with some retcons to strip him of some of his power (let Dragon get hurt and have to go to sleep for a decade, have the Air elemental be on someone else's side because that was dumb.) As long as we retconned a few of the social errors he made in return. I really wouldn't consider that a copout.
>>
>>44311001
Talon was pretty far from self-inserty in the sense the dude was far from perfect. He was pretty interesting in that he tended to be skilled but due to personality headbutt into people like a truck. Half his issues came from himself near the end there.

Saul's kind of in the early stages where his personality isn't fully known yet so when you make a comparison Talons 60+ Threads of development makes him look better.
>>
>>44311031
I like Saul so far personally. He seems to be the kind of emotional and odd person that actually when you look at it has almost everything under control.

Talon was more the person that seemed to have it all under control but in reality just let his subordinates run around doing whatever till they did something stupid or made a bad judgement then he would get them back in line.
>>
>You could, though Saul would need somebody to actually do the formal side of magic as he'd be pretty terrible at explaining things. It'd be like somebody who does calculus in their head with no working trying to explain it to a high school student.
Sorry to come back to this but it relates to another question I have. What is the uper limit of our power? Are we comparable to the Lords? Or do we have to supplement our power with allies and other elite people to reach a stage where we could challenge them?

>the thread is mostly arguing

Adding this to the fact I’m not really feeling it today, I’m probably going to move this right along rapidly. Especially because I don’t want this plan to drag on too much more than the ambush one I assumed would win the first vote.

>1.

“Out, everybody out. We’ll go up the hard and fast way,” you say, your sword slipping free of its scabbard as you surge out of the room.

The clattering of your feet on the tile draws attention almost immediately, particularly once Lynn in his heavy armour joins you. The slamming of doors and screams of executed fodder fill the floor as you charge to where Maloric tells you the nearest stairwell is.

“Right, then straight, then left and, ah shit,” Maloric says, the group coming to a screaming halt at the sight at the stairwell.

A half-dozen knights in the same black armour as Harold stand at the stairwell, axes and maces at the ready. You can tell immediately that these are nightwalkers, likely having been turned relatively recently. Before they can shout for support, you charge them, Ser Lynn right behind you with his shield charge.

You can get to Magic 7 without any special help or tricks (equal to Gnome at full strength). Combined with the fact you can learn a pretty wide array of magic (though you'd be better off specialising) you could easily reach the power of Gnome or a Great Knight, basically putting you up there with some extremely powerful people in the setting. Combined with Lyria, you'd be a match for those that are individually stronger than you like Archmage Alyce.

That's before you do anything really crazy like using forbidden magic, any of the weird draconic familiar stuff or buffing Lyria via feldragon change. You'd probably need to do this sort of thing if you want to fight any of the Three Lords, Lairos, Sylvian, archangels etc without support.

bruh, near the end of AEQ mkI a huge chunk of the old players had dropped out because it had degenerated into numbercrunching/waifu autism for all but a handful (aside from architectanon and plans anon and a few others) and many from that core were vocally antagonistic to newcomers. Didn't help that it was basically a combination dungeon crawl / RTS / Slice of Life / Waifu simulator and while it used to be that you could just drop in to the thread for the style you liked, it got to the point that you'd get chewed out for skipping the politics/numbers threads

There's a lot nostalgia going on I think, because AEQ near the end was emphatically not fun.

Good point. Maybe I'll swap to that image of Saul posted earlier. Or else find a similarly intimidating image of a random fighter.

Hilariously, the title image better fits Saul than Talon, given the use of magic in it.

>>44311497
>You told us that Saul was a savant, but not that big of a savant.
What? He's 25. Alyce is 60, Taren Hand was something like 100. Those mages are way, way older and more experienced - raw power isn't about priorities.

>>
>>44311536
Wait, Alyce is 60? So Lairos woke up like 35 years ago?
>>
>>44311471
Another way of saying that is if you can get an advantage or you find a loophole in the system of magic then take full advantage. As long as the world itself is logical it will seem less like what he was saying and more like someone figuring out the gamechanger.

What makes a sue is when the world bends itself to make the character works and in doing so it stops being self consistent. As long as that doesn't happen and it all makes sense within the stories logic basically anything can happen. And it only makes sense if you want to build an empire to try and get the biggest guns.

No, twenty years ago. Lairos fought Alyce in 1931PC, 21 years ago. If I stated anything different then it was a mistake but Alyce has always been just over 60 as of the start of the quest.

>Higher target met

Realising that the knights aren’t in full armour, you adjust your charge slightly to take advantage of it. Your sword lances between the joints in their armour with unerring accuracy, blood spraying as you keep yourself low and dodge their clumsy counterattacks. The knights are incredibly strong but can’t take advantage of it, their axes and maxes tearing up the stonework and tiles instead of your flesh. Huge rents are torn in their armour by Lynn’s powerful blows even as the target of his charge crashes into the stairwell, the snapping of his spine and plate on the stone echoing up and down the tower.

You don’t stop to admire your handiwork, instead gesturing Gnome and Maloric to climb the stairs. Lynn hasn’t missed a beat and is already ahead of you. Taking the steps two at a time you race to put the nightwalkers behind you, but not before throwing some of their weapons down the stairwell to try to simulate the noise of you going down. Getting the idea, Maloric snaps off a quick summon, no bigger than your hand but made of metal, and it charges down the stairs making more noise than the four of you.

It doesn’t take you long to ascend to the tenth floor. There’s three areas of interest here, you go to…

>1. The dressing room in the middle of the floor. You can sense magic in there, which you’re reasonably certain is a daywalker vampire.
>2. The guard room near the balcony. Perhaps Terce’s personal guard are there.
>3. The guest suite at the far end. It’s further away but there’s muted power there.

fwiw the reboot initially rustled my jimmies and I wasn't on board since everything about it rubbed me the wrong way (didn't like any of the chargen choices, didn't like that everything got abandoned unfinished, etc) but I think the break did good things for aspie.

The writing's pretty top notch and fun to read and reminded me how much I liked aspies style. It feels like a return to old form (really brings back the early AEQ threads)

Seems there's more shitposting this time around, but there's def a lot more planning/strategizing like the old days as well. Hopefully the vets can bring the new blood up to speed.

Oh yes 100 percent there. I was mostly just saying people pay too much attention to the appearance instead of the internal logic. Which in itself is far more important. It's the progression that matters.

That and it's terrible to try for great power and not have great challenges in the way.

I like this image of Saul, it has a certain youthfulness to his face along with the prestige of a general. Also, the fact that he doesn't wear a helmet lets us play with the whole drenched head to toe with blood gag and the need for a shower. It's adorable and endearing in a twisted way.

Dude, let them ask for the occasional sidestory and stop insulting them. The last quest foundered on a lack of frank feedback more than anything else. >3.

You’re pretty sure there’s a daywalker in the dressing room but don’t want to barge in on Terce just yet. The guest suite is of more interest to you – perhaps Lady Rorek is there and could give you a hint? Or could at least be… disabled.

As you begin moving away from the centre of the floor, Ser Lynn steps up next to you as you walk.

“Did you sense it too?” he asks you, his voice oddly quiet despite the voice enchantment.

“There’s something else at the back here, too, yes,” you say, assuming that’s what he’s referring to.

“No, but the dressing room doesn’t feel quite right. We were told Lady Terce was weak,” he says.

Your mind races at those words as you continue to move towards the back of the tower at full speed. It was true – the power in both rooms reminded you of a daywalker, but the one in the guest suite had felt muted, as though it might not only be a vampire. You put it out of your mind as you approach the guest suite and can hear a voice inside it with your enhanced hearing. It’s faint but seems to draw you in. Ser Lynn seems to freeze as well, his stance going stiff.

Perhaps you could just listen to this for a little bit before entering?

Absently, a small voice in your head seems to remind you that there’s somebody else you should talk to. Maybe they’d like to hear the voice, too.

That sounds right. You open a telepathic link to Lyria, hoping to let her know about this wonderful discovery.

You come to several seconds later, your vision fuzzy and full of Gnome. She’s seems to be speaking to you. Ser Lynn’s at the door, holding it fast. Maloric is placing barriers around the room and hallway, the light blue light of them making your vision even worse.

Vaguely remembering a loud burst of words you don’t care to repeat, you notice that Lyria’s in your head.

“You know, I’d have thought you’d be used to that by now,” she says, completely unapologetic.

“I;m amazed you knew that I was being thralled,” you respond within your mind.

“Thralled?”

You sigh, pulling yourself to your feet and preparing to attack. You leave the dragon in your head for now, hoping she’ll be able to keep you sensible without knocking you out with a massive blast of obscenity that hammers at your mind.

“There’s three of them in there, all daywalkers,” Gnome says. “Maloric has placed an aural barrier around the room for now but she won’t stop singing.”

Well, shit. Guess that means you need to do it the hard way. There’s nightwalkers bearing down on you, a trio of weaker daywalkers in the room, including one that can thrall you with her singing voice. You can still feel the massive power in the dressing room, so at least that one hasn’t moved.

>>44312420
Lyria should more or less protect us, especially during dragon rage.
The main difficulty here is that she won't protect the others and we might want to save dragon rage for the other guy instead.

That said, if the rest of our party gangs up on the super Daywalker, they're not in danger of thralling and regular modo might be enough to finish him off.
And if we dragon rage we can likely kill off Terce and her companions before she does anything truly troublesome or they get to pincer us.

So rage, we solo Terce et al and the rest fends off NIghtwalkers and the strong Daywalker until we're done.

The issue with Gnome affecting the tower is that the stone is magically reinforced, so it'll take her longer (a minute or two) and require a DC. So there's a little bit of risk there.

>>44312524
While earplugs might work at a distance, her voice has been stated to affect those using them. Most likely her voice carries magic. I'm happy for Mal to throw aural barriers over your ears, which might provide a bonus against her.

Anyway, potential plans are: try to crush them in the room with Mal/Gnome (which will take time and might require you and Lynn to fight off the nightwalkers); BDR and charge in, relying on Lyria's rage to protect you; just charge in and try fighting her without BDR (to save it for the other daywalker, just in case). Anything else before I call a vote?

As it is, taking huge amounts of time between posts is something I feel is worse than taking less, because more often than not nothing will change with more time.

>3. Hold off any nightwalkers while Maloric and Gnome try to crush Terce with stone in the room.

“Gnome, how long do you think it would take you to crush the daywalkers in there with your earth control magic?” you ask your Champion.

Even as Maloric’s eyebrows rise, Gnome answers you calmly, “A couple of minutes, depending on how tricky the wards around the room are. It’s possible they might break out of the room while I’m doing my work…”

“If they do, we can just hit them head-on. I suspect Lady Terce will cease singing in that case” you say, gesturing for her to continue.

She shrugs. “Hopefully just a few minutes then. If they have regeneration then I can just leave the stone on top of them for a few minutes. I don’t quite know how well it would work if their bodies are compressed to a few centimetres, to be honest. Vampires aren’t my forte.”

“A few centimetres, huh,” Maloric says with a grim smile, shaking his head. “I can throw barriers up on the door to keep them in but they’ll likely panic once things get bad so I won’t be able to keep our surly friends from munching on us.”

You follow Maloric’s thumb gesture to his barriers, where a half-dozen nightwalker vampires in various levels of armour are hammering on them. You gesture to Lynn at the door and she and Maloric trade roles.

If you’re lucky, Gnome will turn Lady Terce into paste before you need to worry too much about keeping your Champion’s concentration unbroken.

Very little discussion happens during votes compared to dedicated discussion time (which is why I prepare to give it more time when necessary). In fact, often votes will have nearly no discussion. Accumulated Successes: 1

Gnome’s power thrums behind you as she concentrates on her work. You can feel the war between her power and that of the wards, as though somebody were drilling through a solid wall of magic. You’d never been that great at penetrating magical protections but feeling Gnome work her way through such strong enchantments makes you wish you had the additional skill. Something to work on later.

You’re brought back to the present by the hammering of the daywalkers on the walls. You can’t hear them screaming, but the thumping of them on the stone walls is very much audible. You’re certain they’re panicking. Of course, you’re also certain that Maloric just dropped the barriers keeping your bloodsucking friends in front of you from chewing on your neck.

You spin your sword with practised ease, going through a series of motions you’ve practiced many times as the nightwalkers surge forward in one ball. Ser Lynn is handling the other side of the hallway, but this group is all for you. A translucent wall of shimmering darkness hovers in the air where your sword moves but you don’t stop moving. The afterimages only last for a few moments at best.

Arrows snap against the magical wall you’re creating with your blade and magic, but the real test is when two of the nightwalker Black Stone Knights charge you. You take a few steps back to give them some room to embarrass themselves and they don’t disappoint you. Loud crunches signal the beginning of their screams of pain and rage as they slam into the magical barrier you’ve constructed with all their force, hitting the ground an instant later. The other vampires are more cautious and you then drop the shadow blade technique, instead resorting to more traditional methods.

As it turns out, huge gaping holes in the chests of nightwalkers works a treat. The two unarmoured knightwalkers collapse to the ground, blood and organs pouring out from the neat bowling ball sized holes you’d made in their chests where their hearts should be. The other three magical lances shatter stonework and you click your tongue as you realise you’d underestimated the speed of the monsters, raising your sword as they rose up from where they’d ducked your lances. Your sword clashes with the axe of one, then you step to the side to avoid the great sword of the other.

Blood sprays over your face as you step in low and cut open the inside of the shoulder of one of them. You spin and catch the backswing of an axe, the nightwalker snarling in rage at you as he tries to overwhelm you with brute force. Allowing his momentum to carry him forward, you step to the side and let his blade slide off yours. He slams into the two Black Stone knights on the ground, who were trying to raise themselves.

You turn and remove the arm of the nightwalker about to strike you from behind, before neatly turning to the remaining nightwalkers on the ground and turning their heads into red mist with your lances.

Taking a deep breath, you turn to help Ser Lynn, only to find Maloric and Gnome missing. You panic for a moment but as you duck back to the hallway intersection you see the three of them finishing off the remaining nightwalkers.

“It’s done?” you ask Maloric as he finishes casting a disruption spell on a thralled mage.

“Gnome says they’re dead. Haven’t checked but the aural barriers stop registering much noise,” he says, then turns to you. “Hells, you looked like you had it handled but how did you get more bloody than before?”

“It’s just fresher blood,” you say, shrugging it off. Gnome and Ser Lynn are wrapping up so you duck back to the main room. Maloric’s barrier is gone so you decide to check what’s inside.

“Saul, don’t!” Gnome calls out as you open the door.

You understand why almost immediately, mostly from the sound the door makes as it peels away the layer of… mush plastered over the floor of the room. Splinters of furniture, cloth, fabric, blood, gore and other indescribable things all intermingle in a thick layer spread across the room. Gnome certainly did crush them, and everything else, in the relatively small guest room. You close the door before anybody else sees.

“Not a pretty sight?” Maloric asks you. You shake your head, then realise that Lyria’s still connected.

“Uh, sorry?” you say to the dragon.

“Do warn me next time,” she says, sounding rather queasy. Here you’d thought she would have seen considerably worse.

“I have, but that doesn’t mean I appreciate it.”

That just leaves the daywalker in the centre. Who is no longer there.

Where did they go?

There’s no power to be found in the dressing room, which makes you worried. You…
