You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, and this has been a tremendous day for one of your subordinates.

Mirai, one of your veteran commandos, has learned the Bankai of her zanpakuto, Sesshōseki. Its name is apparently “Seisha Hicchū”, and it seemed to consist of a shortbow with little flaked seki-stone blades edging its limbs. Given what you know of zanpakuto, even the ones with exotic abilities possess release states that are similar in nature: Yoruichi's Shōsōtō can analyze and reproduce objects, your Tenkotsuki can call on Tamamo-no-Mae's skill with kidō and her reiatsu to differing degrees, and Rangiku's Haineko alters the composition and properties of the ash it releases to make it more deadly in combat. Even Suì Fēng's Bankai, though she hates to use it, makes sense for Suzumebachi: it turns a guaranteed two-hit kill into a guaranteed one-hit kill.

The Seisha Hicchū that Mirai can now draw on is likely connected to her shikai release as well, probably using seki-stone arrowheads. But with every Bankai you know of there's always a second trick to it: a caveat that can make it more powerful than it seems at first. You suppose even Tenken's giant Bankai could probably be repaired by healing Komamura, its wielder, taking advantage of what seems at first to be a glaring weakness.

“I hate it,” Tenkotsuki mutters mutinously, a tone that's new for you. “That zanpakuto just loves thumbing his nose at me!”

“Mutinous doesn't become you,” you chide your own sword. “Just remember he's Mirai's sword, and we're both fond of Mirai.”

“Oh, fine!” she scoffs.

“Tenkotsuki...”

Your sword's tone softens for a moment. “I will not do anything rash, my dear Lady Riku, for Lady Mirai's sake.”

“Thank you.”

Mirai cocks her eyebrow at you. “Your sword is quite chatty this evening?”

“Your zanpakuto brings up bad memories,” you admit, recalling suddenly the feeling of having a seki-stone arrow pierce your heart. “Very bad memories.”

Mirai seems to keep her thoughts on that to herself.

“So what of Kurosaki?” she muses. “Of the three of us he is the only one who has not attained Bankai.”

You walk over to where Yoruichi is standing, a frown on her face as she watches Ichigo continue to struggle.

“You can see his form is all wrong,” Yoruichi observes, not taking her eyes off your nephew. “After watching him it's become increasingly clear that he inherited Isshin's raw power, but his skills are those of a seated officer at best.”

She bites lightly at her thumb nail. “He'll never beat Byakuya at this pace.”

“So we have to change the pace,” you conclude.

“This is hard to watch,” Yoruichi sighs, clearly not thrilled with what she's seeing, “but Zangetsu insisted that he be the one to train Ichigo.”

“Then the answer is simple,” you decide. “I'll have a little chat with this Zangetsu myself.”

As you approach Zangetsu locks blades with his wielder, who is panting heavily. A little bit of blood seeps from his new wounds from the day's training. The sight of it takes you back to when you fought Tenkotsuki over the little purple orb that supposedly contained a sizable portion of her true power. Hell, you were even fighting in this very chamber, more than a century ago.

“You are reminiscing, my dear,” your sword chides you.

Ichigo lowers his blade first.

“Aunt Riku?” he asks in confusion. “What's up now? Don't tell me something else has gone wrong. If that's what you're here for, I don't wanna know.”

“You're doing it wrong,” you tell your nephew, drawing Tenkotsuki from her sheath. “A zanpakuto can be wielded effortlessly by its shinigami partner, but that doesn't make you a master of the art.”

“Oh?” he counters. “That sounds like criticism.”

“Consider it critique,” you reply, using hirenkyaku to get behind him. He blocks your strike with that large blade of his fairly easily... good. His bladework is just fine.

Ichigo lets out a low whistle. “You're as quick as Kenpachi.”

“That was no faster than your own shunpo,” you explain, to his obvious surprise. “Your problem is that you're waiting until after you move to attack. Leading with your footwork gives your enemy all the time in the world to respond to your bladework.”

“You think about a lot when you fight, don't you?” Ichigo mutters, clearly uncomfortable at being told he's been doing it wrong.

You shake your head. “Not about stuff like that. It becomes reflexive, given enough time.”

“That was not shunpo,” Zangetsu observes. “That was hirenkyaku.”

“You're not wrong,” you admit. “Like I said. Reflexive.”

Zangetsu's eyes are unreadable behind those tinted glasses of his, but after a moment he nods. “I understand. You would be Kurosaki Isshin's sister, I take it? Very peculiar.”

“I could say the same about you.”

“I think we both know what I want to ask,” you continue, “but I'll wait on that for now.”

Zangetsu nods his head ever so slightly in gratitude.

“So instead, show me what you have, old man.”

In response, a burst of reiatsu slashes past your left side, which you deftly dodge and counter with your own hirenkyaku. Zangetsu however counters your charge by using hirenkyaku himself, placing him behind you. From there he unleashes an unmistakable Heilige Pfeil, using the curved blade in his hand as if it were a bow with a single arm.

Feeling your muscles bulge, you respond in kind.

“Kamaitachi!” you roar, swiping Tenkotsuki's blade in a wide arc across your body as you turn to meet the attack. A powerful rush of wind and reiatsu clashes with the projectile, breaking it up in a pall of dust and stray reishi.

As the dust settles, you find that Zangetsu has planted the blade in the ground at his feet. Seems that display was enough in his mind.

“That first attack was Getsuga Tenshō,” you observe, “and the second was a Heilige Pfeil. Interesting.”

“Wait, how did you know to call it that?” Ichigo asks in bewilderment.

“Isshin created that technique,” you explain, sheathing Tenkotsuki as you face your nephew. “He lacks the skill I do at integrating kidō with his hakuda and zanjutsu, which allows me to perform the Kamaitachi you saw. So he took advantage of his own Engetsu's responsiveness to his reiatsu to create the Getsuga Tenshō, doing with finesse what I do with brute force.”

“Since Zangetsu apparently functions like a reishi weapon, it makes sense that you could use an even more refined form of your father's attack.”

“And you figured all that out in two attacks?” Ichigo presses.

You shrug. “Like I said, I've seen those techniques before. Just not the way you use them.”

“More importantly, Ichigo,” you continue, “I need to ask you something important.”

“This isn't gonna get weird, right?”

You smack him over the head. “What is Zangetsu to you?”

After a moment of thought, Ichigo comes up with the response you expected. “I guess it's like he's a part of me? Never gave it much thought past that.”

“That's right,” you nod. “But what part of you is he?”

“I... really can't say?” he admits. “Pride, maybe? Determination? Somethin' like that.”

“Each zanpakuto reflects a portion of its wielder's soul,” you explain, your hand finding the sheaths of your two blades. “Sometimes you get a dual-type zanpakuto, but it's so rare that it's tough to say how that fits within the rules. But in every case, the zanpakuto reflects a slightly different facet of the soul. Learning what that facet is critical in growing stronger with one's zanpakuto.”

“So it's like an inner knowledge sorta deal?” your nephew asks, seeming to get the gist of what you're telling him.

“That's right.”

Ichigo eyes your own swords for a moment. “So what do those two reflect, anyway? And how'd you get two swords?”

“Tenkotsuki is my pride,” you explain, lightly caressing the hilt of your first zanpakuto before finding your second. “You could also call her my 'fair nature'. Kobara no Tachi on the other hand would be my 'hard-favored rage', no less important to recognize but far harder to harness.”

You can tell immediately that both Rosa and Tenkotsuki appreciate the theatrical twist you gave their introductions.

“As for the how,” you conclude with a frown, “a lady has to keep some secrets. But I'll tell you this, it wasn't easy.”

“So I have to figure out what part of my soul the Old Man is?” Ichigo scowls, deep in thought. “Great, another riddle.”

“There are a lot of those in the world,” Zangetsu replies sternly, in a tone that almost lectures the young man. “But your aunt is correct.”

“Something to work on,” you sigh, taking a seat on a nearby rock.

After a moment, Ichigo seems to remember something important.

“Oh yeah, we met this guy from Fourth Division,” he recalls thoughtfully. “While we were running from you. Yamada Hanatarō, I think. Said something about you going to Hueco Mundo and killing a bunch of strong hollows?”

“What about it?” you ask.

“Well, I mean,” he frowns. “Why? And how?”

So, what do you think happens when the Living world has a war? The Soul Society's purpose is to preserve the balance of souls between Soul Society, the World of the Living, and Hueco Mundo. If the living world is about to lose several hundred thousand souls, then we've got to balance the scales somehow. In the past we've had to purge the Rukongai, but nobody enjoys having to do that. “It was my job,” you begin, recalling the events of almost a century ago. “I'm sure Kuchiki told you about what we shinigami do, right?”

“You balance the flow of souls between worlds, right?” he asks, frowning.

You nod. “That's right. And what do you think that means when an earthquake or a battle kills tens of thousands of humans in a week?”

“You'd have to... wait,” Ichigo pauses, clearly working over the ramifications. “You'd need to send an equal number of souls the other way?”

“There are a lot of souls in the Rukongai,” you continue as Ichigo looks on in shock. “It's unpleasant, but on our end we have to kill some of those souls every time you humans fuck something up badly enough to disturb the cycle.”

“That's horrible!” Ichigo growls. “How can you just accept that?”

“I didn't,” you explain. “Do you also know how a Gillian is formed?”

His silence is all the answer you need. “It's formed when hollows, which themselves are formed from the souls of once-living humans, gather together in a feeding frenzy. Through devouring one another they form one immense, mindless beast that we call a Gillian, each of which is composed of what was once thousands of souls.”

“So you killed those Gillians to take strain off the Rukongai?” Ichigo asks.

“Exactly. And with each Adjuchas, which are formed when a Gillian emerges with a single personality and devours its fellows, the strain is reduced even further.”

A few more moments of silence pass. “How many?”

“More than you'll probably see in your human lifetime,” you tell your nephew. “So many I literally lost count.”

"You must really hate them. Hollows, I mean."

You shake your head. "Not at all, Ichigo. If anything, I pitied those souls that were reduced to such an existence."

Alright, so what would you want to say to Zangetsu? As far as he's concerned your business is concluded.
>>

"Why do you look like the Quincy King?"
>>
>>44277604
Probably why he looks like the Quincy King.
>>
>>44277604
How does he have the face of the quincy king, is he really Ichigo's Shinigami powers? Shouldn't he represent Ichigo's quincy side?
>>
>>44277604

The whole Quincy King thing.
>>
>>44277604

>>
>>44277628
pretty much, is he really the shinigami powers and if not isn't that getting in the way of his bankai training.
>>
>>44277604
Does he really consider our business concluded? That is odd given we just told him "I think we both know what I want to ask but I'll wait on that for now."

In particular I want to hear his answers to "what are you, exactly" and "why do you have the face of the Quincy King"
>>
>>44277654
>Does he really consider our business concluded? That is odd given we just told him "I think we both know what I want to ask but I'll wait on that for now."

Pretty sure it meant ask later. I wanted to wait, but I think it got like 4 votes this time.
>>
>>44277604
Do you remember anything about the Quincy King? Does my face remind you of anyone in your memory? Which side of Ichigo's heritage is he representing? And if he's supposedly representing his Shimigami side wherein fact he's the Quincy side, why the masquerade?
Call him out on the instinctive Quincy Techniques Zangetsu used.
>>
>>44277604

>>
>tfw Ichigo hollows out and decides to go train with the canon vizards
>tfw Riku laughs in his face
>>
>>44277666

Too much really, I rather move on with current plot then ask stuff right now.
>>
>>44277665
Asking now is asking later. If I understand correctly we delayed because we didn't want to ask these questions in front of Ichigo. Now should be an opportunity to do that.
>>
>>44277604
As far as I'm concerned, you claim to be Ichigo's Shimigami side that he inherited, yet you use Quincy techniques. If you're really Ichigo's shimigami side he inherited from Isshin then the techniques you would use would more or less have variations of Getsuga tensho. Wouldn't you also teach Ichigo those quincy techniques as well?
>>
>>44277447
With time running out on the day's training, you pull Zangetsu aside to speak with him as Ichigo ponders the task you've given him.

“You look like the Quincy King,” you mutter. “Why is that?”

Zangetsu looks down at you with a strange expression, barely visible behind the concealing sunglasses.

“I don't have the answer to that question,” he admits quite openly. “I wish I knew, but I will agree the resemblance is uncanny.”

“So he knows that much?” Rosa muses. “I'm not convinced that's all he knows. He must at least suspect something beyond that.”

“Speculate,” you eventually reply.

“There are three influences on Ichigo's powers,” Zangetsu continues, “as you are well aware: quincy, hollow, and shinigami.”

“And you represent the quincy part of that equation?”

“It would seem my appearance at least reflects that.”

You sigh, unable to find fault with that answer. “I've got something weird going on myself, so it's hard to say whether I believe you or not.”

“Then you can...” Zangetsu manages, before his body is replaced by the training doll at the worst possible moment. Inconvenient... just like something Urahara would design.

Leaving Ichigo to pass out, you return to find Renji gone and Mirai sleeping fitfully against a large rock.

“Go upstairs,” you suggest, rousing her briefly. “There are futons in one of the closets. You okay?”

Mirai shakes her head wearily. “You suspect that these lingering injuries of mine will complicate my use of Bankai?”

“The thought crossed my mind.”

“It presents a risk of premature failure,” Mirai admits quietly. “The reiatsu output of Seisha Hicchū exceeds what Urahara Kisuke's invention was designed to regulate.”

“Then we'll need to get you a replacement,” you reply. “Simple as that. So until then take it easy, okay?”

After a moment, Mirai nods dutifully. “If that is your order, Lady Riku.”

“Give me strength,” you mutter darkly to nobody in particular before taking off into the midmorning sun.

It doesn't take you any effort at all to track down Byakuya, as his Bankai is already released. Apparently Abarai was enough of a threat to force him to take such a measure, which honestly surprises you. But when you actually arrive on-scene, it looks like the aftermath of a massacre.

Blood is everywhere, and all of it is Renji's. Several nearby buildings have been leveled, with traces of Renji's reiatsu all over them leaving you in no doubt who flattened most of them. But you can also tell that Senbonzakura has been hard at work as well.

What's left of Renji's blood-soaked body is a grim testament to how outclassed he was, while you struggle to find any evidence that Byakuya's been wounded at all.

Mirai, however, stands transformed.

Her outfit is far more ornate, appropriate to an archer of the central Asian steppes rather than to a Japanese woman. In her hand is the bow you've already seen, and though she has one arrow nocked she has yet to draw it back. She stands over Renji's body, staring Byakuya down.

“That small thing is supposed to be your Bankai?” Byakuya muses. “Truly, I must be favored.”

“Do not smile,” Mirai warns him. “You have yet to see what it can do.”

“And why exactly is a Ninth Division officer interfering in Sixth Division's affairs?” Byakuya asks, his voice challenging Mirai to account for her actions.

“I did not want to allow a comrade to die pointlessly,” she replies simply. “It is not a matter of jurisdiction, but of principle.”

“Admirable,” Byakuya admits, “but foolish.”

Around the two shinigami, pink “petals” betray the movements of countless tiny blades as Byakuya prepares his Bankai. You're not sure how the next few seconds might pan out, but you're certain things will soon get out of hand.

In an instant, you're standing between the two would-be fighters.

“Lady Shiba Riku,” Byakuya addresses you using your technically-correct name. “Why am I not surprised that you would be behind this?”

You shake your head. “Make no mistakes, little Byakuya, I'm just here to recover my Commando. Abarai is your subordinate to punish as you see fit.”

“Apologies, ma'am,” Mirai bows deeply. “I came too late to prevent the fight, but I felt it would be wrong to allow the Lieutenant to die... mistakes were made.”

“Mostly by Abarai. We'll sort that out later,” you insist, “but for now we'll have to come to an agreement here. You deal with yours, I'll deal with mine?”

“Your Fourth Seat has not yet attacked me,” Byakuya allows, the fragments of his sword seeming to retreat. “You may deal with the boy as you see fit, as I have dealt him a severe enough punishment. If he happens to survive, then so be it.”

His blade now sealed, Byakuya departs the scene.

Ichigo is still in training by the time you return to the underground chamber, under Yoruichi's watchful eye. Mirai tends to Renji's severe wounds in an effort to save his life. All across the Seireitei, things seem to have reached an unexpected point of stability: the calm before the coming storm.

You now have a choice: I can have you play out what promises to be a boring day in-game, as little is set to happen until the morning of the execution. It'd be up to you to tell me what's on your list of priorities.

Or, we could do one of the many omake chapters I have lined up, which may actually be too much to fit into one thread anyway. In this case the day would pass without incident, and we'd pick up the plot again in January starting with the morning of the execution.

Riku tries to host an “Iron Chef” style event to amuse the Seireitei's gourmets and epicureans.
>Spring Break – Spring, 1999

You are Kusajishi Riku, exceptionally lucky street rat and new member of the Onmitsukidō. After having been pulled off the streets of the Rukongai, where you led a tenuous hand-to-mouth existence in abject poverty, you were given a place in the secretive organization. During your first mission to the living world you proved your mettle, briefly awakening your zanpakuto and assisting in the defeat of a Menos Grande that was threatening a team of Academy students.

This morning you've been called into the office of your savior, and your new boss.

Lady Yoruichi frowns as she flips through the paperwork she's been handed, glancing over each page in silence before setting the documents aside.

“Everything's in order,” she concludes with a sigh. “Go tell the Central 46 I'll issue their mission immediately.”

“I gather that's why you called me here, Lady Yoruichi?” you reply as soon as the messenger has left with her response.

Your Commander nods sternly, something clearly weighing heavily on her mind. “This is a duty that my organization is frequently tasked with: the execution of shinigami guilty of crimes that make them a danger to their peers.”

“And you intend to send me on such a mission?”

“I have faith in your potential, Riku,” Lady Yoruichi explains thoughtfully. “Seems to me this is a decent chance for you to show the rest of the Onmitsu what you can do. I'll be sending you on your own, so this should be a fair test for you.”

“So what crime did this shinigami commit, ma'am?” you ask, before quickly remembering your manners. “I mean, if I'm allowed to ask.”

“Your target is a member of the Sixth Division, their twentieth-seat. His name is Seta Hiko,” Lady Yoruichi explains, looking over a page presumably containing a list of traits and crimes. “History of drunkenness on duty, as well as abuse aimed at his subordinates. Recently it seems he killed his wife when she took him to task for his out of control behavior. And also, quit with the formal crap already!”

“A murderer, then?” you ask, glancing at the man's likeness as Lady Yoruichi hands you the dossier. “Why hasn't he been put on trial?”

“One of the deceased's friends has been hounding the Central 46 about it, I'm told,” your Commander tells you. “But Seta is a marginal seated officer with an unimpressive name, whose crime can be attested to by numerous witnesses, and who's lost the support of his Captain.”

“There aren't two sides to every issue, Riku,” Lady Yoruichi finishes, settling into her seat. “And in the Seireitei “due process” is what the Central 46 deems necessary. Assassination orders like this are more common than trials, sadly.”

“Then I'll be back when I'm done,” you conclude. “Can I take these documents?”

“Of course you can,” Lady Yoruichi replies with a wave of her hand. “And you'd better come back.”

With no real time frame required in which to carry this out other than “soon”, you ponder what your next step should be.

Council with Tenkotsuki on how she would handle this assignment.
>>
>>44278617
You decide that the prudent step would likely be to review all the available data on the target and his disposition. There's plenty of information at your fingertips to come up with a solid plan.

Twentieth Seat Seta Hiko owns a small home in the Rukongai, where he's thought to have retreated after murdering his wife. Also tucked into the dossier are known associates, who despite having clean records seem to mostly consist of gamblers and others of dubious employment and trade. Known associates of his now-late wife are few, mostly close personal friends. Apparently it was one of these friends, a blind man, who has been raising a fuss over taking Seta to trial. None of her friends or associates are likely to end up getting involved in the situation.

According to his established habits, Seta is most likely going to be in his home in the evening gambling and drinking, possibly with company. Several shinigami from his own unit are listed as frequent visitors on such evenings, so it may be possible to pose as an off-duty officer come to gamble away her pay. As distasteful as it seems, they also have been reported to hire “entertainers”, who you may be able to impersonate.

Alternately, you could try to sneak into the building after the inhabitants are all passed out or have left. While it may be a bit trickier to enter undetected and then find your target in the dark, doing so is more likely to lead to a clean kill.

You promptly decide that it would be best to leave things as uncomplicated as possible, and elect to enter the building at night well after the gamblers and drinkers have turned in. That way there's no risk of you saying something to blow your cover before the first stroke of your sword.

Now all that remains to be done is wait.

As the sun falls you try to sit and meditate, making every effort you can to contact your zanpakuto. After about an hour of trying you're almost ready to give up, when you find yourself seated in a familiar landscape of blasted volcanic stone and steam, with a lone figure waiting for you under a vivid cherry tree.

“How good of you to come,” the nine-tailed fox woman muses quietly. “I have been hoping you would not keep me waiting long.”

After a long session speaking to your zanpakuto, which involved answering a series of zen riddles, you stir to find that the dark of night has already fallen. The target's house is dark as well, with all the candles inside seemingly extinguished for the night.

You begin your mission...

It won't be long, anon. Just hold in there a while longer.

Also, now you know why my UK schedule got pushed up so far into the day. I can't go until 2-3 in the morning like I used to.

… by calling upon your sword.

“Prohibit, Tenkotsuki.”

The strangely familiar weight of Tenkotsuki's kodachi blade greets you as you vault up to the second floor of the building and cling to the wall just to the side of a darkened window. One slash right through the rice paper screen and you're into the building, padding quietly across the polished wood floor of a long hallway.

But at the end of the hallway is something you didn't expect: a room full of half-asleep shinigami, sitting around a candle smoking from their pipes. One of the shinigami you recognize as your target, and unfortunately despite his stupor he recognizes the threat of an invader as well.

He draws his sword and quickly slashes at the candle, rising to his feet in a semblance of readiness. Several of his companions begin to do the same.

>Announce that you're Onmitsukidō, make the bystanders think twice about joining the fight.
>Take the offensive, focus on killing your target then making your escape.
>Anyone who draws their sword against you is your enemy as well. Kill them.
>Other?

Lean over to one side and tuck your arms and legs in. Or put "dice+3d10" in the options field.

Also captcha had a picture of the wreckage of the Titanic. Random, but neat.

Time to hit hard and fast. Given we've botched the stealthy approach already its time to overwhelm him with our superior speed and then leave before people realize what's going on.

With a harsh cry, you rush the barely-prepared shinigami as swiftly as your feet can carry you. One man takes a swing at you with his zanpakuto, which you deftly parry and reward with a kick to the groin. But that one instant is just enough for your target to act.

“Drink deep, Netsuyume!” he declares, and his weapon promptly shifts forms into a strange weapon with two parallel blades running away from the same hilt.

Your first swing is parried with deadly skill, and his riposte nearly takes your head off. As a third man tries to cut you down you're obliged to kill him to escape harm, but even amidst the swirling chaos in the dark something strikes you. These men are all drunk, and their performance is suffering for it... all except for Seta Hiko himself. It's almost as if his movements are faster and more precise for his drunkenness.

“That's exactly right, young woman,” you hear Tenkotsuki's voice in your mind. “See how his body moves?”

True, his limbs seem filled with an unnatural fluid grace, as if the staggering movements of a drunken man have been given power and focus to match their utter lack of coordination. It seems Netsuyume gives its wielder greatly heightened skill when they're under the influence or would otherwise be impaired.

The drunken shinigami lunges at you again, an attack you narrowly avoid by turning your waist and taking a half step back at your best speed.

After a few more moments in which you're forced to cut down yet another of your shinigami opponents, you finally see an opening: Seta stumbles into the candlestick holder he slashed at earlier, which puts him off-balance.

In a single strike it's over. You catch him under the collarbones with your forearm, slam him into a wall, and thrust Tenkotsuki's blade through the base of his throat, severing his spinal column. On the way out you slash through his left jugular and carotid to ensure that Seta bleeds out too quickly for medical aid to save his life.

That morning, you report to Lady Yoruichi. Your eyes are bleary and you needed to change your uniform because of all the blood, but aside from that you escaped completely unharmed.

"So," Lady Yoruichi greets you. "I take it you succeeded?"

"Seta Hiko is dead," you inform her. "As several of his associates may also be, since they tried to kill me. Unfortunately many of them were still awake when I snuck in."

Yoruichi sighs to herself. "I sent a clean-up team to deal with the rest of them. They're all suspected of minor crimes as well, so no big deal really."

"I'll do better next time," you promise. "Now that I know what to expect."

"I'm sure you will," Lady Yoruichi replies. "Now go get some breakfast."
