You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!

Currently, you have been tasked with a rather unusual mission. You were to track down and "eliminate" Hess.

"What do you mean by 'eliminate?'" You ask suspiciously. "Kill? Capture?"

"Depends on who you talk to." Sawyer grumbles. "Command is aware of Hess'... status, and believe that her capture could be massive bargaining chip in future negotiations with Reikland."

"So they want her as a hostage." You bluntly summarize.

"Well, that's the ideal option for them." Sawyer sighs. "However, their main concern is her status as a combat asset on the battlefield. The fact that she's been able to create such a difference during the battle at the Iron Foundry as well as singlehandedly eliminate over a dozen knights has them concerned about the possibility us running into her."

"And Breton wants us to kill her, I assume." Tarin says flatly, not even a question.

"It's odd, really." Sawyer shakes his head. "The Bretons both adore and absolutely despise her. They want her dead, but they want it done RIGHT."

"Let me guess. Nothing sneaky, but straight up one on one combat?" You frown.

"Bingo."

The guy they're talking about was... rather literally autistic in his distaste for her. Apparently his big beef was that she'd touched us without our permission, which apparently justified inflicting a horrific death upon her.

Otherwise it's largely tarinfags and general anti-waifufags.

"You know, I'd rather take alive." You sigh. "I've personally met her, sir. I don't think she's that bad of a person."

"Well, I'm not sure if she's going to give you a choice." Sawyer shakes his head sadly. "Just remember the mission. One way or another, Hess as to be taken out."

"I know, sir." You reply.

"Now, the real issue is actually getting you to where she is." Sawyer grumbles. "As of now, we have no clue where she went off to after the Iron Foundry. She might have escorted the evacuated vehicles all the way back to the capital, or she might still be manning the frontlines. We don't know. Our scouts haven't been able to track her so far."

"Actually..." You take out the map Hess had given to you when you had first met her. "I happen to have a map to her house."

Everybody. Sawyer, Bannon, Parker, even Tarin just stares at you.

"What? She's a pretty eccentric girl." You shrug. "Almost as odd as the Bretons, really."

"I'm honestly not surprised." Sawyer facepalms.

"Why didn't you tell us this sooner?" Parker huffs, obviously annoyed that there was something even SHE didn't know.

"When did this happen?" Tarin asks, a very suspicious look on her face.

"Well, uh, I didn't think it was important at the time." You laugh nervously as you begin to sweat profusely as you hand the map to Sawyer.

"Either way, that's a boon for us." Sawyer nods as he gives it a quick look. "From what it looks like, it's not too far from the frontlines. If we make a push for it, she's sure to come running, if she's not already there. Then we'll bring the full hammer of the Tilean army down on her."

"Wouldn't that mean we'd have to divert forces from the push to the capital?" Parker asks with concern.

"It's a calculated risk." Sawyer replies.

"I can handle this alone." You assure him. "She won't let anybody else interfere."

"I wish I could believe you." Sawyer sighs. "But this map IS pretty detailed. There's quite a few paths marked here that aren't on any of the Reikland maps we captured. We might be able to use those to slip past their lines."

"Are you sure you want to go with this alone?" Bannon looks at you with concern. "I mean, this IS enemy territory we're walking into, after all."

"Well, consider this. The fewer troops we send, the fewer we risk." Sawyer observes. "You platoon would be a great help in the push to the capital."

"I think Bannon and Parker should back us up. It would be good to have an officer with us." You suggest.

"W-w-w-what?!?" Bannon gasps in surprise.

"Hm interesting." Parker grins. "I always did want to see what a knight of the Reiksguard's palace looks like!"

"Well, then I guess that settles it." Sawyer slaps Bannon on the back rather hard. "Looks like you've got another chance to prove yourself, Bannon! Don't disappoint me!"

"Why does it feel like you're sending me on a suicide mission, sir?" Bannon groans.

"Well, like the kid said, this mission needs an officer to oversee it!" Sawyer nods. "You two better get moving right away. We've already got your VTs repaired and ready to go. If this map is right on the money, then it should lead you straight to Hess with no trouble."

"Yeah..." You frown.

"Having second thoughts?" Tarin ask as you both leave the command post. "You seemed a bit troubled."

"A bit. It's a pretty dangerous mission, you know?"

"They're all dangerous." Tarin points out.

"I guess you're right about that." You shake your head.

Upon returning to the outside, you see that, true to Sawyer's word, your VTs have been recovered and engineers are swarming all over them.

"Me and Bannon will let the rest of the platoon know what's up." Parker pats your shoulder as she passes by. "You make sure our VTs are ready to go!"

"Of course." You nod as your commanding officers trot off, one in a better mood than the other.

"I still wonder how those two got together." Tarin muses.

"Ah, so do I have the two of you to blame for all of this?"

Both you and Tarin turn to see a very grumpy looking Egan, who points to what's left of the train platform as well as the still smoking crater that used to be the Uberpanzer.

"Come on, Egan, we had no choice!" You say in your own defense. "The guy was trying to kill us! And how were we supposed to know he had a goddamn self destruct system?"

"Hmmmmm, I suppose you're right." Egan expression softens, but only slightly. "Still, that was quite a bit of lost research opportunities. Now all we can do is go over the files and paperwork that we managed to salvage, and paperwork is BORING. Less interesting than practical experimentation."

"Our apologies." Tarin says flatly.

"Well, in either case, I heard that you're going off to attack Hess." Egan turns her gaze to you. "Just a word of warning, I got word from some of my subordinates who were accompanying the Bretons. They said they were getting reports of Hess piloting a brand new model of VT we've never seen before. A quadruped."

"A quadruped?" You frown, images of the Panzerhund flitting through you head. "Are you sure?"

"It's very possible she's running in a heavy VT now." Egan cautions. "Be careful, and do try to bring one back for study."

Of course.

"All right, let's move out." Bannon grumbles as he walks in and starts clambering up the boarding ladder to his VT.

"Sorry about that, he's just in a bit of a bad mood." Parker says apologetically.

"Well, I hope he gets better." You sigh as you start boarding your own VT. You and Tarin go through the power up sequence.

"All right, you have the map, Roy. You take the lead." Bannon grunts.

"Huh, Tarin, you have an idea where to go?" You ask your driver, showing her the map.

"Hmmmm." Tarin narrows her eyes. "We can take this gully here. It should provide sufficient defilade to conceal our approach."

"All right, let's go, then." You nod.

Your small two-VT convoy march out of the remains of Der Reise and into the off road wilds. As you go, you could see how the fall of the lab facility has once again drastically changed and shifted the frontlines. You come across numerous hastily abandoned outposts and defensive positions. Inert undead soldiers liter the area as well. With Der Riese shut down, there was no more control signal to give them commands, making them just as dead as they were before. Tarin then spots the gully indicated on the map and turns Clementine towards it and begins to follow it upstream.

"So what do we do once we get there?" Tarin asks, her focus still gazing out of the viewport.

"Well, well." You hear a voice buzz over the radio. Suddenly, there's a massive rumble as something incredibly heavy and incredibly LARGE lands in front of Clementine with a loud WHUMP. As the dust clears, you can see a massive, four legged VT with a massive cannon, at least 88mm caliber. However, despite the fact that it had you dead to rights, it doesn't fire, and you can guess why.

"Holy shit!" You hear Bannon yelp.

"Hold fire, Bannon!" You bark. "She's not here to fight. Not yet, anyways.

As expected, the hatch on the massive VT pops open, and a very familiar one eyed girl pops out with a big smile on her face.

"Ah! Roy! You've finally come!" She says cheerfully. "Come for that rematch?"

"Of course." You smile back, albeit a little nervously. "It's been a while."

"It has been! And I'm very glad you brought spectators!" She says cheerfully and then looks up at the sky. "Oh dear, but it IS getting rather late... and this little gully certainly isn't the ideal place I had in mind for our duel! So how about you stay the night in my manor? We can battle in the morning!"

"Is she serious?!?" Bannon croaks. "She's INVITING us for a sleepover?!"

"That's certainly unconventional." Parker nods.

"That's a very suspicious offer." Tarin frowns.

"Well? What do you say?" Hess says with a bright smile on her face.

"Sure, we'll take you up on your offer." You say.

"Excellent"! Hess claps her hands together happily. "You'll absolutely LOVE supper! Our household has one of the best chefs in all of Reikland!"

With that, her heavy VT pivots and clambers its way out of the gully, though you note that its turret still keeps its cannon trained on you, just in case.

"What are thinking?" Bannon hisses over a private channel.

"It seemed like the nice thing to do." You reply. "Plus, she sort of had the advantage of surprise and positioning over us. Accepting her offer is actually a good thing for us."

"I agree." Parker says in support. "And also, our presence here guarantees that she won't be the frontlines to fight our allies."

"Fine, fine." Bannon sighs. "But I don't like this one bit."

"Understood." You say as you nod to Tarin, who gives you a look a slight disapproval before she pivots Clementine to follow Hess' VT out.

"So, Hess, I uh, notice you have a new VT now." You say, unable to pry yourself away from her massive vehicle. It's four legs working in concert to propel it.

"Ah yes, well, you did completely destroy my last one!" Hess says cheerfully, as if she wasn't even angry or vindictive about losing. "A complete 100% loss! No chance of recovery! It was amazing!"

"Uh huh, I'm sure." You chuckle. "So what's it called?"

"Well, the scientists called it the Tiger, but I call this one Weissritter!"

"So that cannon, that's an 88mm, isn't it?"

"Oh, you can tell just by looking at it?!" Hess giggles. "Yes! A high velocity 88mm, guaranteed to destroy any VT in one hit!"

Well, you felt something shrink just a tad.

"And the armor?" You continue, trying to glean more information.

"Well, the regular models have armor even thicker than the Panther!" Hess says happily. "But mine had some of its armor taken off, because it was simply too heavy! The best defense is not to get hit, correct?"

"Ha ha, I guess so." You nod.

"Hmmm, that means our HVAP rounds may have a chance." Tarin muses.

And then you see it. A large castle off in the distance. Like every other Reikland structure you've seen, it's big, grey, and utterly imposing.

"Ah, my manor!" Hess says proudly. "What do you think of it?"

"It's... big." You gape at just the sheer SIZE of the massive structure. "And you LIVE in that?!"

"Since I was born!" Hess confirms.

"H-how do you walk from one end to the other!?" You ponder as you try to get a measure of just how wide the castle was.

"Well, you just have to take your time!" Hess replies simply as her Tiger stomps forward up to the front gate. You see the massive wooden doors slowly creak open, and a small army of servants march out with military precision.

"We use live servants." Hess explains as if she felt she needed to clarify that. "The undead ones are just sooooooo dreadfully dull!"

"Uh huh, I'm sure." You bite your lip. At least you wouldn't have to deal with THOSE things here, then. You watch as Hess effortlessly dismounts her Tiger, landing on the ground below like a gymnast before snapping a gloved finger. Her driver then dutifully pilots the Tiger off to the side to make room for you. You and Tarin dismount Clementine, while Bannon and Parker do the same.

"Guests, milady?" The lead servant bows as Hess approaches.

"Yes! Please prepare for four guests for supper!" Hess nods rapidly. "Will Mother be joining us today?"

"My apologies, milady. "The servant bows his head in shame. "Your mother had received an urgent summons from Reikland while you were on patrol and has already left."

"I see..." You swear that you see Hess' smile almost waver.

"Is she away often?" You ask, a bit concerned.

"Ah, it's regular for a woman of her position!" Hess quickly reapplies her smile as she turns back to you. "As a member of the Reiksguard, she has certain duties she simply cannot ignore!"

"Hm, yes, I suppose in a time like this, the Reiksguard would be needed back at the capital more than ever." Parker nods.

"It was rather amazing, you know!" Hess says with a wistful look. "A two pronged attack on our most strategically important bases? Simply marvelous! I wagered that you would appear at the Iron Foundry, though I guess I was mistaken!"

"You were hoping to meet us there?" Tarin raises an eyebrow.

"Well of course! Well, that and I simply cannot stand that Strasse." Hess huffs. "Always such a... unnerving man."

"Well, if it's any help, we kinda killed him." You say.

"Ah, well that's a shame for us, then." Hess shrugs, not sounding particularly concerned.

"You really don't like him that much?" Bannon inquires.

"I can never appreciate a person who hides behind walls of dead flesh." Hess shrugs. "I'm not concerned with happens to him either way."

"Eh, we didn't really like him all that much either." You shrug.

"Oh, not many people did." Hess nods in agreement. "But still, I cannot deny he was a brilliant man in some respects."

At this point, Hess as held you into a cavernous dining hall. Honestly, you get the feeling that you could fit your entire HOUSE inside this room and there would still be more than enough space. Not to mention, the dining table within looked to be able to seat dozens of people.

"So, uh, you use this room often?" You ask as you crane your head upward at the vaulted ceiling, which displays murals of angels flying in the skies above.

"Well, we have to eat every day, right?" Hess chuckles. "Oh, would you like to see my trophy collection? I've made new additions to it!"

"Actually, I'm rather hungry right now." You say.

"Oh, well in that case, let's get seated!" Hess motions to the prepared chairs. "No need to worry about manners or etiquette! I know you commoners aren't really educated in such matters!"

"Gee, way to make us feel that home." Bannon groans sarcastically as he sits down. "Why the hell are there three forks."

"Well, Bannon, the smaller one there-" Parker points to one of the forks helpfully.

"No thanks, Parker, I actually don't really want to know." Bannon sighs.

"Anyways! While we wait for the food, we should decide the terms of the duel!" Hess says happily as she plops down in her seat. "To the death or not? I find this is one of those important things to get clarify first!"

the various defeats Reikland is suffering is making her more concerned about the reality of the situation and making her prioritize the safety of her family and her happiness rather than the whole blind Reikland nationalistic zealotry.
Defeat is bitter but it's good medicine in her case.

"I'd really, REALLY prefer it not to be to the death." You say.

"Awwwwwww, but that's the boring way!" Hess pouts as she crosses her arms.

"It's the safer way." You remind her. "First to have their VT disabled or forfeits is the loser and has to become the winner's prisoner. How does that sound?"

"Hmmmmmmm." You see Hess' one good eye dart back and forth between you and Tarin, and then to Bannon and Parker. "What about them?"

"They're just here to observe." You explain. "I want you to guarantee their safety and that you'll let them go if you win. In return, if I win, I promise not to bring any harm to your house or your servants."

"It's a deal, then!" Hess nods. "Then first thing tomorrow, we shall have our duel! Loser becomes the winner's prisoner!"

You can't help but feel quite a bit nervous at how happy she sounds all of a sudden. Maybe it was just your imagination, though. However, any reservations immediately melted away when Hess' servants arrived with the food.

Dear god it smelled good, especially after having had to subsist on military rations...
