The Tsukuda family owns several households in the First District of Western Rukongai. Tsukuda Shiori lives in the largest of them, alone, apart from the rest of her relatives. This large house was where you lived until you decided to join the Shinigami eight years ago. You hadn't kept track of the amount of time you spent living here. It never seemed important. But either way, you don't think it was long. Hopefully, she hadn't moved while you were gone.

You knock on the door. For a while, there's no response, so you knock again. Once again, nothing. This doesn't seem right...

You lean closer to the thin sliding door, placing your ear against its surface. You can hear footsteps on the other side. Soft, slow footsteps approaching the door. You move back, not sure what to expect as the door slides aside.

There stands a young woman slightly shorter than yourself, with long and messy locks of black hair stretching underneath her shoulders. Her pleasant face wears an annoyed frown for an expression, her brown eyes squinting from the brightness of natural sunlight. But after a moment, her eyes widen and her small mouth lets off a gasp.

"Ah! Ryouta! It's you!" The frown is gone without a trace, swapped with a smile as bright as the sun above. She unceremoniously grabs you into a hug. "It's been so long! Why didn't you write to me that you were coming? I would have prepared myself a little more..." She pulls back and starts to lightly pat at her unkempt hair, as if trying to straighten it out.

"It's fine. Please don't worry about it." You assure her. The woman stops smacking her hair, smiles and grabs you by the hand, gently pulling you into the house.

"Well, you're probably right! Come on in, Ryouta, don't be shy now. Tell me what you would like. A dinner? A bath? Or..." Her smile turns a little sly. She covers her mouth with her free hand and giggles.

"I think I could use a bath." You say. Shiori nods.

"I'll join you. I could use a bath myself." She leads you down the hallway, still with a smile on her face.

"Are you sure about that?" You ask. This doesn't seem appropriate. Back in the Academy, boys and girls had to bathe separately.

The woman replies with a chuckle. "What's wrong? We used to do that all the time. Don't tell me you've gotten too old for it. Well, that's nonsense! Everybody needs someone to wash their back."

You suppose she's right, so you don't protest. She leads you into the bathroom, wooden tiles adorning its floor and walls. A spacious tub, also of smooth, light brown wood, is positioned by the wall, and to its side is a small stool underneath a shower faucet. Everything's unchanged from the last time you've been here.

"Well, get undressed and sit down, okay? I'll wash you." Shiori smiles and turns away, heading towards a counter hung up on the wall. She takes out a blue bottle with a colorful label wrapped around its middle and sets it down on the rim of the tub. "This is for bubbles." She explains.

When you undress, you head towards the stool and take a seat. You hear the soft shuffle of fabric as your mother takes off her kimono and comes closer, the wooden floor letting off slight creaks as her bare feet tread over it.

"Tell me if it's too cold or too hot, okay?" She whispers and turns the faucet on. The water is a little too hot at first, but Shiori quickly adjusts it. Now it's warm, pleasantly so. As she soaps and washes your hair, she asks you questions about your life as a Shinigami. You reply to her honestly, but you think your replies might be a little too brief. The conversation frequently drifts off into periods of silence, at least until she asks her next question. For some reason, it bothers you. You've never felt like this before. You've never even paid attention to the fact that it happens quite often whenever you're talking to people.
>>
>>44265943
"You've done really well for yourself these last few years. Urahara Kisuke sure seems to fancy you, huh? It's really impressive. I'm so proud!" She gleefully exclaims and hugs you again, this time from behind. She shortly lets go. "Keep your eyes closed..." Your adoptive mother mutters and washes the flower-scented shampoo out of your hair. You hear a slight click and feel a different, though also flowery, scent. "I'll wash your back and then I'll try to get my hair in order, okay?"

You nod.

Shiori lays her hands on your back, her fingers gently sliding along your tired muscles, replacing fatigue with something dizzyingly pleasant. Your whole body slumps over and relaxes, overwhelmed by an unfamiliar sensation. Your eyes close. Shiori continues caressing your back. It's true what she's said - you used to do this all the time with her in the past, but it's never felt like... this. Did you catch some kind of illness on your way here?

"You've grown really strong, Ryouta..." She whispers. You feel light-headed; the temperature feels too hot here. You can't tell if you should tell her to stop or to continue. At that moment, her hands leave your body. She washes the soap off your back and shoulders. The bizarre feeling disappears, as if flushed away by the cool water. Your sight regains its clarity, and your head feels as heavy as it ought to once again. Your mother is now sitting by your side, within view. She's quite slim.

"Ryouta, you can get in the tub now. The water's warm and nice. I need to wash my head, but then I'll join you. ...Is everything alright?"

"I'm not sure. I felt strange. Dizzy."

"What's wrong? Did you catch a cold?" Shiori puts the back of her hand against your forehead. "You're a little warm, but I think it's the shower..."

It's probably not a cold. Those feel differently.

"You must have overworked yourself. It's so like you to not notice that. Let's get you in a bed, Ryouta." She hands you a towel.

"What about you?" You ask as you dry yourself. Shiori grabs another, smaller towel, to use on herself.

"I'll be fine. Your health is much more important than my hair. I'll just do it another time. I don't really like washing it anyway. It's kind of a chore." She walks over to her kimono and puts it on. "I should have given you something to eat first, after all..."

"No, that's not the problem. I felt strange when you started to wash my back." You say. She seems confused.

"Did you get too old for this after all? I'm sorry." Shiori covers her mouth and chuckles, her face flushing a slight pink.

"What do you mean?" You ask, but she shakes her head.

"...I guess it's nothing." For some reason, she seems almost disappointed. "Get dressed, Ryouta. Do you still remember where your room is? I'll get your futon out." She says. Your adoptive mother turns away as you stand up to get dressed.

"I don't feel sleepy." You say.

"Then I'll make you something to eat." Shiori folds her arms over her chest as she waits, letting out a bit of a sigh. "If it wasn't a cold, then... then you really might have grown up, Ryouta. In a way that only you can. I'm really happy for that..."

"What do you mean?" You ask. She glances back for a moment but quickly turns away, probably because you haven't finished dressing. You don't recall her ever minding that before... but at the same time, you never noticed it, either.

"What do you think?" She answers you with a question of her own. You're not sure what she means. Is she joking around and you just don't get it?

"I am using my spiritual abilities for good, just as I set out to do. Is that the growth you mean?"

"Well, that's growth, too, no doubt about it. You certainly set out to do that. 'I have spiritual powers, so it's only proper that I use them as they should be used - in the ranks of the Shinigami', is what you said, or something very close to that." She crosses her hands behind her back and stares at the floor, her lips curled into a small frown.

She has a good memory. It's exactly what you had told her before you left for the Seireitei. It felt very appropriate at the time. The thought of doing something right drove you to leave home of your own initiative, without anyone forcing you or asking you to. Your mother never protested, so you thought it was fine. But looking at her now... perhaps it somehow wasn't? Or is it just that you achieved less than you could have? Or is it that you achieved the wrong things?

You'll have to think about it.

"Don't worry about it, Ryouta." Shiori speaks up after a pause. "I believe that you're an excellent young man, doing the right things and growing in the right way, as men like you ought to be. I'm happy that you're my son. I wouldn't trade you for anyone."

"I'm happy that you're my mother, too." You say.

"Do you really feel that way?" She beams with another smile and grabs your hand. You nod, but...

Do you really feel that way?

The dinner is filling and decent in taste. Shiori is capable as a cook, though she doesn't do it often, instead leaving it to the servants. Back when you lived here, there were two servants around the house. Neither of them lived here, but instead visited three times per day to cook food and clean the house.

"I don't really have any spiritual powers, so I don't need food as much as you do. I let Chouko go after you left, and Kotone only comes every other day to clean up and make me a proper meal." She explains. "I don't need food at all, but food tastes good, so why not, right?" Shiori chuckles. "My only worry is gaining weight. I don't even go outside anymore, so I'm kind of worried..."

"You haven't gained weight at all." You tell her. She seems relieved. "What have you been reading lately?"

"There are lots of books I've read over those last eight years, Ryouta. I read at least one almost every day. But... if you mean very lately... I've been binging detective novels from an English author. That's what Satsuki's been bringing me lately from the Human World. There aren't that many, a little more than a dozen in total I think, so you can probably get through them in a week if you would like to." Your mother stands up and heads over to her room, gesturing for you to follow her. You do.

Her room is the same as always. The walls farthest from the entrance are covered by thick and tall shelves of dark wood, standing out quite severely from the gentle colors of the rest of the room. The floor under your feet is hardly visible, obscured underneath stacked up piles of books, paperback and hardcover, modern and ancient. Most of them are of human origin. It's quite rare to spot a book here that is authored by a resident of Soul Society.

(2/3)
>>
>>44267965
Interestingly enough, they bookshelves have been picked almost entirely clean of their contents, save for a lonely specimen laid down flatly on the lower shelf. The woman sighs. "I'll have to put new ones on it sometime, but I just feel so lazy about it... I feel bad about asking Kotone to do it for me, too. I've just been making trips to the library and coming back with a bunch of books at once instead. But... well, Ryouta, if you warned me that you were coming, I would have cleaned it all up! But it's kind of embarrassing now..." She seems to be blaming you for it so you apologize, but she chuckles and says that she's kidding.

It's always hard to tell when she's joking.

Shiori makes her way along the crowded floor with ease, having gotten used to the layout of her room. You follow after her. The woman crouches down, picks up a book and hands it to you. It's a detective novel.

"Your English hasn't gotten rusty, has it? This one has words in it that are a little advanced sometimes, so ask me if you want to know anything, okay?" She asks, and you nod again. "But if you want to read something else completely, then just tell me and I'll get you something else. There's a ton of new stuff in the library now. You've missed out on a lot! Satsuki's been bringing more Human World books than usual recently. I'm very impressed with her."

You have a whole month ahead of you. That's plenty of time to catch up.

>>
>>44268009
>>44268020
You spend your vacation reading detective novels, catching up on almost everything of that genre that your mother had managed to garner over the last few years. Shiori seems to really enjoy herself whenever you ask her questions about the books you read, though it's never been particularly hard for you to guess the culprit all by yourself. Putting it all together at the end was almost never difficult. You've only been tricked once, when a motive was a little too complicated for you to wrap your head around. Surprisingly, Shiori somehow managed to get it right on her first try.

One evening, you decide to ask her why she adopted you.

"Why? Well, don't you remember? You passed out at my doorstep. You were starving. I couldn't just leave you there, you know." She explains with a smile. "And then you didn't have anywhere to go, and when I asked you if you wanted to stay, you said yes."

You actually hardly remember the times before you were adopted. You think you were wandering around Rukongai, but you don't remember why. You probably didn't understand what hunger was, and that's why you ended up fainting. All your memories about those times are extremely foggy, and you've never really thought too much about them.

"At first, I was worried that it'd be hard to take care of a child. Well, you weren't really a child... more like a teenager. But you were really good, nice and obedient. Never complained, always did as told, were really focused while studying and reading... It was very cute..." Shiori reminisces with a smile. Those were peaceful days.

The month passes by rather uneventfully. It's time for you to head back to the Seireitei. You've packed your things and are ready to go. All that's left are the farewells. Your mother is smiling, but it doesn't look quite like her usual smile.

>>44268926
Or we could guide the character away from his present state of autism and towards well-roundedness? Not have him always fall back on a single skillset that a group of fa/tg/uys will never be able to play decently?
>>
>>44269013
That's why I'm questioning if it makes sense.
>>
>>44269001
I'm not saying that's a bad idea you idiot. I'm saying that neither vote so far was an appropriate time to do that, and there will be better chances in the future.

>>44269059
Your idea of "appropriate" is not the end-all, be-all, anon, and you are not the sole deciding factor in how this MC behaves.
>>
>>44269028
Then why didn't you vote for emotional awareness if you wanted him to be well-rounded?

I'm just saying that grinding stats at this time is gamist as fuck.
>>
>>44269059
wow great argument fagtron you sure convinced me with those hot opinions
>>
>>44269093
>>44269108
Well you're sure doing a better job convincing me, assholes. Making numbers go up until we're the best at everything whenever we get the chance should clearly be our only goal.

Because I had other things to do, anon. Leg day waits for no man.

Don't you occasionally do other stuff?

>>44269156
When you keep taking every point we make to its most extreme conclusion to refute it, it makes me think arguing with you logically is a waste of time.

Urahara sent us here to chill out and we'll have better resources to getting stronger once we're back at the seireitei. Passing up a chance at character building to raise stats slightly seems silly, and the only counter-argument you have is "being a weak smart guy seems hard, so let's not even try, we can squeeze this guy into the genetic all-rounder template if we try hard enough"
>>
>>44269281
I didn't say it would be hard, I said it wouldn't be fun. Let's just agree to disagree and avoid shitting up the thread any further.
>>
>>44269281
Okay, here's your response. First of all none of the options deprive us of character interactions. Second, our character only ever interacts in limited ways because he seems legitimately autistic. As in it's not an insult, he literally has trouble understanding emotions and communicating, has a narrow range of interests, etc.

Third, you're still straw-manning. Or rather you would be straw-manning, but technically what you're attributing to us would have to bear at least a superficial resemblance to what we were arguing for it to be called such. So really I don't even know what it is you're doing aside from not making sense.
>>
>>44269392
How am I strawmanning you salty fucks?

>>44268824
This is just pretty much saying "fuck-it" to the established character so far.

>>44268947
Is acting like this is a freeform quest run completely by us and the MC has no personality or strong suits other than what we impose
>>
>>44269467
How has he been established as a strategist? He's more of a detective or internal affairs investigator who clearly has to fight hollows on his own sometimes.
>>

>>
>>44269068
Seconding
>>44269557
>>
>>44269560
Nobody is expecting overwhelming power. And getting stronger doesn't mean we can't still use our wits. You're still doing exactly what this guy said>>44269193
>>
>>44269467
Tell me, anon: what is a "straw man"? I'd like to see how you define it without mentioning at least one of the informal fallacies you've made so far.
>>44269560
And we've been trying to tell you that playing a character who only ever has one thing going for him is not only unnecessary and risky, but it's also extremely boring.

That last part is an opinion, sure, but you've basically been arguing that Ryouta HAS to be pigeonholed into a single skillset where no such requirement exists (aside from your repeated insistence that anything to the contrary violates the "established character").
>>
>>44269557
>>44269582

Like you two even care about the context of the prompts, considering you only seem to see the thread as a chance to raise the MC's abilities, given this whole incipid debate started when one of you said >>44268276 out of nowhere, indicating that the opportunity to get stronger was the only thing you noticed.
>>
>>44269644
>Tell me, anon: what is a "straw man"?

Not that anon, but why not Google it yourself?
>>
>>44269647
>Like you two even care about the context of the prompts, considering you only seem to see the thread as a chance to raise the MC's abilities
>>
>>44269647
So you're saying that the option you voted for is the only possible right decision? This degree of self-centeredness is impossible to deal with.
>>
>>44269644
Figures you'd be too dumb to look it up yourself. A straw man is made by misrepresenting and exagerrating a point of view you dislike, and arguing against it instead of what your opponent is actually saying.

I'm surprised you don't know this, since you're using one right now. At no point did I ever say or even IMPLY that the MC should never become stronger or level up anything else. He should, strive to improve all his abilities. My argument was in this specific thread with the two earlier votes, was that raising the MC's endurance OR analytical awareness was continuing the charade of /tg/ pretending to be emotionally stunted becuase they thought it made them stronger, and there wasn't a good reason to learn to be faster or better at magic RIGHT NOW as opposed to unwinding with our mother's reading recommendation.
>>
>>44269715
Like you don't view things the same way? Again, you or >>44269709 started this because you decided that your view of the quest was the only correct one, and not doing things your way would lead the quest towards disaster. Get off your high horse you arrogant piece of shit.

"I'll visit again as soon as I can." You say.

"You've told me all about how busy you are, so don't push yourself if you can't make it, Ryouta. I'll be fine. It's you who I'm worried about. Your job is dangerous..."

"I'll be fine. My work is less dangerous than it seems. I don't have to fight, after all." You try to explain to her, but you're not sure how convincing that was.

"I know, but still..."

...Maybe it's best to talk about something else?

"Because I get deployed to the Human World often, I might be able to bring you something. Do you want anything from there?"

Shiori places a finger on her chin and thoughtfully looks upwards. "Well... no, not particularly. Well, I've always wanted television, but I guess that's a bit much..." She chuckles.

"I can bring you that, but it won't work in Soul Society. I might be able to talk the S.R.D.I. into developing something to make it work, but..." You contemplate. It's not as though it's impossible, not at all - it's just a matter of copying what the humans have created. Making it actually work in the Rukongai, though... that's more complicated.

"Goodness... You don't need to bug your superiors about the whims of some old lady. I was just kidding." She says with a smile. She doesn't look old at all. Thirty at most, by human measurements. "Just get me a book I've never read before. That would be fantastic..."

You nod. You'll see what you can find. Good books to look out for would be ones that came out recently. But other than that, you have a general idea of what's in the library.

Silence arises in the hallway. You're not quite sure if there's anything else you should say before you go.

...You step a bit closer and wrap your arms around her. Shiori lets out a brief gasp in surprise, but then hugs you in return. "I love you." You tell her.

"I love you too, Ryouta." She weakly mutters. "I think you... really did grow. I'll miss you."

When you return to your post, Oto explains to you what you've missed and briefs you on your next mission. Ito Satoshi had his injuries healed and he managed to survive, though he is still in a coma. He has been afflicted by a hallucinogenic poison rather than the cancer-like ability of the Hollow you've slain; the foreign parts have disappeared at the moment of purification, though the internal damage still persisted. If it weren't for the sample you had taken and the antidote derived from it, Satoshi would have died.

The mission you receive is nothing special, and as it later turns out over its extremely brief course, is a false alarm. They lost contact with a Shinigami, but it was because their Denreishinki malfunctioned instead of anything serious. You've received a few more missions like that over the course of the year. In the times during which you had nothing to investigate, you assisted the team with research. You mentioned television, but nobody seemed thrilled at the idea. Everyone was focused on making the cellphones more reliable and more available to the Divisions.

You and the rest of the team made it possible. Now, everyone is equipped with the Denreishinki, making the 12th Division's duties, as well as the duties of everybody else, much easier.

As time went on, you've grown.

And you just did it TWICE in one post: first by taking something out of context (substituting a clear "I'd like to see you" for "I don't know"), and second by claiming I said something I didn't. On top of which you had chutzpah to accuse me of doing the same.

I didn't say you were saying that the MC "should never get stronger". What I accused you of was pigeonholing him into doing one thing based on some notion of what YOU think is "in character".

That's the last I'll say of it, but you really need to reexamine how you've been making decisions and structuring arguments.

You receive the summons for your next mission. This time, Urahara Kisuke himself arrives to provide you with a briefing. Once again, you meet in the Spiritual Wave Measurement Lab, with the blond researcher staring up at the screens in silent contemplation. You wait until he speaks up, without interrupting his concentration.

"Shinigami have been disappearing in one particular area. Before they send in a squad to take whatever is responsible for it, they want to know what they are up against." Urahara smiles a bit and ruefully shakes his head. "They've heard about you and what you do here, so they would like me to send you there first. So, that will be your mission."

It seems simple enough.

"I bet it's just a Hollow being tricky, though. Don't risk your neck over it, Ryouta-kun."

What does he mean by that? Is he saying that it's dangerous, or that it's not worth the risk? But isn't this exactly what you're meant to be doing? ...Perhaps you're reading too deeply into a simple warning.

"Get ready for deployment. Tomorrow, you're heading out to New York." He smiles dryly and pats you on the shoulder. "You've heard of it, right? What a city, huh? I bet you're excited to see it, Ryouta."

Of course you've heard of it, though you can't say that you feel anything at the prospect of going there.

I don't know, I don't think we'll ever be number one, shining bright for everyone.

But I also don't think that's a bad thing, as long as we don't wind up on the wrong side of a hero.
>>
>>44271434
I actually kind of hope we end up as sort of a jobber or at least have a weird/ seemingly useless zanpakuto release.
Make us think and figure out new and interesting ways to exploit things while the world around us blows up and gets absolutly crazy, but we're stuck in the background struggling to cut our own path and using creativity and strategy to try and get the job done while everyone else is in full SSJ3 mode.

It makes dropping those gods from the sky even more satisfying. look at Kira right now for instance.

Only trouble is if we go full Ikkaku.

See, that's the thing about the setting: almost anyone much above the level of an average Lieutenant is bullshit strong. That means there's an awful lot of broken going around, and people who are broken in different ways can still flatten each other without straining credulity TOO much.

Even at Aizen-tier bullshit it can be tough to say who "should" be winning.
>>
>>44272402
I feel that's honestly just from Kubo running through his checklist and trying to appease everyone. The "No one dies in Bleach" thing is painfully true and aggravating and I'm hoping the DBZ esque powerlevel jumps and invincibility are toned down to reasonable levels here.
>>
>>44272506
You're talking about a lot of different things all at once that aren't really related, so I'll deal with the big ticket.

The Captains and Lieutenants probably aren't going to get nerfed, nor are a lot of the more powerful hollows. The Bleach setting is VERY unforgiving to the average, because the "average" is unimpressive at best. So if you want to see low power in a Bleach quest, you'd better pray we never see how low our power really is.

Likewise if a QM expects to tangle with the big boys, a powerful MC is a prerequisite.
