You have always wanted to be an emperor. That ambition has burned dimly in the past, tempered by reality. Now the opportunity to realise your ambition has arrived and you are determined not to let it slip. Now is the time to build your empire and become an emperor.

Last Thread: You are the mercenary spellblade Saul Waise, in command of a mercenary company that is currently seizing a large amount of territory in the hopes of forming an empire. You’re currently under siege by what appears to be a rogue force from a neighbouring kingdom.

Next thread on Sunday 20th December at 5:30pm EST.

Rolls are d100 and the best of the first three posters. I may sometimes ask for more dice to be rolled by each player, but same rules apply otherwise. Please quote the post you are voting for or rolling against. Note there are hard-to-replace points that can be used to offset failures in rolls. Additional dice mechanics will be given a GDocs later.

Accumulated Successes: 3

A maelstrom of fire and magic cascades down the hill as your battlemages unleash the spells they’d been preparing. The screams of the enemy cut through the air as they were caught in a chokepoint halfway down the terraces. The barriers were working wonders in terms of funnelling the enemy into killzones – you’d have to remember next time you were under siege. Then again, you’re not as sure you’ll be able to disable their mages. You can still see their mages futilely trying to cast spells, their magic fizzling out as Maloric weaves his own.

Still, the damage was mostly being done to their regular soldiers. The heavy mage-knights continued to bring up the rear, thumping their enormous shields in rhythm as they tried to drive the soldiers forward. Clicking your tongue, you snap a sending to your mages.

‘Bigger spells, aimed at the heavy knights. Let the archers and traps handle the rest.’

At least, you hoped your mages had big enough spells to hurt the heavy knights. Loud rumbling disrupted your thoughts and you leaned over the wall. Clouds of dirt and mud were being spat up into the air by the spiked logs your men had let loose. They churned towards the enemy, accompanied by a rock slide that your men also set off. The enemy knights and soldiers seemed to freeze as they saw death ready to roll over them, scythe in hand.

Then the air split with the blast of a horn and suddenly the enemy was scrambling to change formation. The heavy mage-knights, who had spent the entire charge so far behind the rest of the army, rapidly took up a defensive position to the front. The remaining soldiers cowered behind them.

You could hear the cracking of the logs as they ran into a barricade of magically protected soldiers, the wood unable to withstand the forces of the impact. While you’re certain that they did at least some damage to the enemy soldiers it looks pretty minimal as the heavy mage-knight formation hardly rocks in response.

Well, you’d just have to make them rock. Your sword rises and falls with the sunlight once again and this time the heavy mage-knights have to wear it. Accompanying the fireballs were a relatively small number of magical lances and iron balls. Soaring over top of the shield wall they crashed into the centre of heavy knight formation. Fire cascaded down among them as heads were twisted in ways they weren’t meant to be. The lances made a mark as you saw men drop on contact, sometimes missing heads. The whistling of arrows made it clear another volley was launched, and it felled the regular soldiers behind the heavy formation.

The fury of the Seraphi knights was clear, as they howled in rage before resuming their charge up the terraces. Part of you wished you’d turned the terrace into mud but you’d wanted to avoid doing anything to the terrain that would prevent you from sortieing. For now you’d just have to hope that the gate held. It didn’t look like the enemy had brought any additional siege equipment. Which was odd. Did they intend on beating down the gate with their fists?

I suspect their general has some sort of nasty surpise ready for the gate.
I'd rather not have our guys standing in front of whatever they're unleashing before we know what it is, when we still have a second wall we can pull back to.

No, they're not mounted. Their armour contains enchantments to boost speed and make their heavy armour lighter.

With that said, there are more mounted units now. Between spiritual beast cavalry and magically bred horses, there's a lot of oomph to cavalry units. Also ups the variety of units.

That strange feeling you got from their general, combined with his seeming absence, makes you wary. You don’t charge a magically protected gate with heavy knights unless you can break through it. After spending most of the night waiting for an attack by nightwalker vampires after Glynn’s paranoia over the full moon got to you, you just hope you’re not being overly paranoid.

Snapping off sendings to your officers, you step up to the walls while Malaine begins evacuating the archers. The height of the walls makes it easy to do so without the enemy realising, and having the archers continue sporadic fire gives the illusion that you’re not moving. You hear the chunky sounds of scorpions loosing as the heavy knights get close enough to guarantee penetration and watch as the bolts force the enemy into slowing their charge.

They’re almost at the gate as you continue watching. Curiously, they’re not firing back. Remembering that the wall has a barrier protecting against projectiles, you ignore the urge to slap your forehead out of annoyance with your own forgetfulness. Still, you haven’t yet seen anything of interest in the enemy force, beyond the willingness of the heavy mage-knights to try to absorb attacks that should be tearing up the rest of the army.

“Sir, we’re ready to move the last wave,” Malaine tells you as he lands behind you. “You see their battering ram? Or anything of interest?”

So we could use shadow blade in a fight to set up preemptive parries? If we used a bunch in a row we could theoretically block incredibly strong attacks that would otherwise be unblockable? Can we use shadow blade in mid swing during an attack so long as our blade doesn't collide with it as we withdraw it?

>Target met

You had seen a few things of interest, you think. A knight that had shrugged off a magical lance. Another knight that had ignored a scorpion bolt burying itself in his armour. The heavy mage-knights were strong as hell, but you had your doubts about shrugging off attacks of that power. The problem was finding the knights that were like that – was there a hint in their magical signature?

You take a deep breath and focus – your senses were honed through years of experience but you rarely used them in any detail. Magic stealth wasn’t really a thing in your experience and you weren’t a monster slayer, homeland be damned. Right now it might be useful, however.

Seeing the battlefield through your magical senses is like staring at the sun on a cloudy day – possible but painful. As such you shift your focus to the knights. You’d dismissed the idea of magical stealth earlier, but it seemed that the magic-resist runes on the Seraphi magical plate was certainly distorting the magical signatures of their wearers. Experience told you that most mage-knights had a decent amount of magical power – the physical boosts of the armour could easily be beaten by even a moderately skilled magical user with little training. Somehow you couldn’t sense much.

You focused more, trying to feel past the armour. A strange itch seemed to scratch your mind and you followed the memory, recalling your old lessons. Nant had always been better at this and you remember what he said:

‘Don’t focus on people or objects, focus on concepts.’

Vague advice, which is why you’d been so terrible at it. Still, you tried to visualise the concept your mind best attached to that of the general. In an instant, your mind clicked and you could feel him. Behind that armour, with a smidgeon of power leaking out a hole in its torso and the helmet.

“That’s the general, right there,” you say to Malaine behind you, pointing at the heavy mage-knight you were certain was the general.

In response, the general looks up at you. You can’t see his eyes but you know his gaze is looking unerringly at you. You wave at him.

His halberd slams into the magical afterimages your hand formed in the air, shattering them in an instant. Its path was pushed that very slight bit away however, and it flies off to one side.

“What the hell was that?” Malaine says, stepping up to the wall. “I think we need to pull back.”

The same as before. Some form of sorcery that is related to the training in your youth. Could be a vampire.

>>44251978
Their mages are pretty far back. Mal was mostly preventing them from dispelling your barriers and their mages never moved up. Their mages might be getting closer now, however, but they'd still be out of AA range now you've pulled back. FMKs would probably work if you kept Mal tasked to it, but you wouldn't have them when/if the HMKs break into the courtyard.

Somehow you feel that antagonising the general might not be a great idea right now. If he hurled his weapon at you simply for pointing him out, he might try to jump here if you attack him back. Or maybe your imagination is going a little too wild – you’re picturing a dramatic showdown atop the gatehouse.

Shutting your imagination down, you take to the air and quickly survey the battlefield as you pull back alongside Malaine. You guessed there were about 700 bodies littering the terraces, although many of them were still moving. Further back you could see their battlemages very slowly approaching, cautiously optimistic as they could cast spells briefly. At least, they could so long as Mal was readying himself at the inner gatehouse after being airlifted. That meant there were around 1500 enemy soldiers right outside the gatehouse. Perhaps you should trigger the pitch and the like that had been set up?

Your sendings are received almost immediately and in response your battlemages trigger the traps from afar. As you fly back to the inner gatehouse you can hear the screams of the Seraphi knights as boiling pitch pours down on them as they approach the gatehouse.

You had barely landed on the inner gatehouse when you feel the shattering of a barrier, spinning wildly you can only watch as the outer wall’s gate explodes into splinters. You can both see and feel the darkness seeming to evaporate from the splinters as they soar through the air into the courtyard. Your archers atop the platform wall in the courtyard seem stupefied at the sight of the gate exploding, allowing the enemy to surge into the courtyard unmolested.

Well, except for the pitch that pours on them as your battlemages keep their wits about them.

Also, they’ve got a daywalker. You’re not so addled as to not recognise the shadow magic of their kind. Fan-damn-tastic.

The enemy are surging into the outer courtyard. You have more logs set up along the platform walls facing them. Your archers and mages are lining the inner wall and the platform walls, ready to bombard the enemy. Lynn and her Black Dragon Knights are guarding chokepoint at the upper edge of the ramp between the lower and upper areas of the outer courtyard. Malaine and his flying knights are awaiting orders, available to either bomb the enemy in the courtyard or go after the enemy battlemages.

>3. The general’s right outside the gate with his knights. Sortie and try to eliminate him with the Black Dragon Knights.
Use Black Dragon's Rage. We can end this now.
>>
>>44252227
I'd say the FMKs take on their mages, once their mages are engaged we can probaly have Mal switch focus to enemies in the courtyard and we use our traps, mages and archers to make life for those storming the courtyard living hell with the general goal of slowing them down enough to get the General to spearhead their assault.
Once he does that we try to engage him with dragon rage and hope our HMKs and Lynn can keep cover our back so that we can focus that power-boost on the general alone.

>>44252322
AAs can't hit the mages, they're too far away now that you're on the inner wall.

>Does it seem like the daywalker is physical, by the way? we should be able to tell, right?
Daywalkers have two disciplines - shadow and blood. Blood is the physical one. Vampires that specialise in both are relatively rare - that's what made Volante and Aladria so powerful in AEQ, relatively speaking.
>>
>>44252227
We may want to have Saul himself jump in if possible to kill the daywalker.

We should bomb the battlemages to free up Mal to go all out.
>>
>>44252355
I'm guessing mana leech would really ruin the daywalker's party.
>>

Well, if that's the case, then here's my plan.
Have Saul go and solo the enemy mages by flying around the battlefield, have the rest of our troops hold them back, once they get a good ways in, trigger the traps.
Once that done we can get Mal and AA on daywalker duty.
Also, we can tell if the use of that shadow magic that just happened was the same feeling we got from the general or not, right?
>>
>>44252355
>How would you isolate him?
Send the FMKs to tie up their mages, have Mal, our mages and AAs use this opportunity to bomb the courtyards so hard he decideds to spearhed the assualt, confront his charge together with our HMKs and Lynn, switch our AAs and mages to cutting him off and hope our HMKs and Lynn can keep their heavies from supporting him while we dragon rage the general.

Alright, man plan ideas are:

1. Have the FMKs bomb the enemy mages to free up Mal. Alternatively, have Saul fly out and bomb the mages.
2. Bomb the shit out of the enemy while they're in the lower courtyard, engaging them after softening them up as much as possible. Alternatively, go in hard now to try to get at the daywalker before he does anything drastic.
3. Try to isolate the daywalker with barriers - this is probably best done by Mal, as it's a bit specialised for your battlemages.
4. Engage the daywalker with Saul and use Black Dragon's Rage. This is pretty much unanimous but this question is timing.

Anything I miss? I'll throw up a few votes shortly.

>>44252451
>Also, we can tell if the use of that shadow magic that just happened was the same feeling we got from the general or not, right?
It's the same feeling, but you can't confirm that the general used to magic. That means that the general is almost certainly a daywalker, however.
>>
>>44252539
So in our firsr large scale battle of the quest we might be fighting 2 (TWO!!!!) daywalkers. Possibly one of them shadow one of them blood.
Just wonderful.
Our best bet is probably for us and lynn to take out the blood one with AA support and rage, and hope that our mages and arrows can overwhelm the shadow one.
>>
>>44252598
Pretty sure there's only one general

There is one general, who we know is a daywalker.
However, he threw a bardiche at us super hard, so he's probably a blood type.
If he's a blood type, then he couldn't have cast that shadow spell that broke the barrier, which means there is at least another daywalker among the enemy's ranks.
If the general is indeed blood type, that is.

That depends on how well things go and how much mana you burn. I'm assuming you'll have Mal backing you because otherwise you'll just be hosed down by magic.

It would probably take a while, though.

Could the generals magic be spiritual in nature? If were from Balkarin and we recognize the aura it could be the techniques the Wardens use as well. My grasp of magic in this setting used to be iffy and since the break I lost it all.

Ok. I'm still not convinced its a daywalker due to your wording but the only things I can think of them being otherwise would be a dragon (which explains familiarity and sorcerous) or God-knight which kinda seems strange how early it is.

God-Knights are incredibly high profile, even without using their power they are walking mountains of meat, and using astral power is noticable.

So when Lynn starts to cut loose we may just glance over and think "Oh, shit, a dragon?" nah, breh, just ya boyy Ser Lynn.

Plans were definitely your strong suit, you think. You were fortunate that people tended to actually do what you asked them to currently, as convincing them wasn’t your strong point. Yet.

After snapping off a series of sendings to your officers you glide down to join Ser Lynn and his knights. Above you soar Malaine and his mage-knights as they take off down to the other end of the battlefield. You can hear the panicked shouts of the Seraphi soldiers as they see them go and realise they’re not getting any support.

It’s also raining fire and arrows on them, so the panicked shouts could be related to that. You weren’t knowledgeable enough in human suffering to read the difference.

“Their magic was quite impressive. I’m surprised Maloric didn’t stop them from destroying the gate,” Lynn says to you as you approach. He’s standing at the front of his formation of knights as you drop down and join them. Magical bolts are scorching the stone ramp leading up to you but you’re not too concerned. The heavy-mage knights aren’t so much as charging as slowly inching their way towards you – you suspect the log traps are keeping them cautious.

“That wasn’t the sort of magic Magister Maloric could stop,” you say, watching the enemy closely. You need to wait for the right moment to charge in and take care of this daywalker vampire.

“Oh? That doesn’t sound right,” Lynn says, tilting his helmet at you.

“The shadow magic that destroyed the gate was a daywalker,” you say.

“How do you know that?” he asks.

“I know my vampires. If he’s anywhere near as dangerous as what Malaine and Lyria make them sound, then we’ll need to hit him hard and fast,” you say. You pause briefly then ask despite yourself, “Are you with me?”

Lynn doesn’t respond but the knights behind him do. Their roar of approval is joined by the thundering of their enormous black tower shields and bardiches against the stone and each other. You try not to look too surprised at the strength of their response. You absolutely directed that at them.

You hear the rumbling of the log traps and know that the fight is truly on now.

The probabilities weren't that bad.

>Traps: Target not met

The log traps are as stunningly ineffective as last time. You make a mental note to make them from steel next time. Or stone. Let’s see those knights stand in the way of massive rolling bars of that.

>Bombardment: Dramatic failure

It also seems that the courtyard isn’t giving you the advantage you’d like to have in terms of bombardment either. Fire and steel rain down on the enemy, and although you are doing significant damage to the weaker troops at the back of the mass of soldiers in the courtyard, the heavy knights seem resolute in not dying like the dogs they are.

A sudden surge of magic causes the hairs on the back of your neck to raise. The air past the platform wall seems to ripple for a moment as a cascade of magical bolts are fired by the enemy knights. You barely spot a dozen or more daggers made of shadow amongst them. This time the screams of pain and panic are among your men as the archers on the platform walls take heavy damage. Without prompting, the archers immediately begin pulling back, dragging as many of the wounded with them. The fusillade of magical bolts continues as the heavy knights ignore the magic raining down on them to concentrate on killing as many of your men as they can reach.

Your knights are still maintaining formation. Their professionalism means they’re not breaking ranks to charge the enemy foolishly but you don’t exactly like seeing your men take casualties. A sending from Captain Moss calms you, telling you that it appears to be mostly injuries rather than deaths. You…

>1. Push the archers back onto the platform walls and continue your strategy.

As Moss pulls his archers back to the inner wall you ready yourself for the enemy’s charge. In the distance you can see Malaine and his knights beginning to swoop over the Seraphi mages. You hope they mop up sooner rather than later – you really want Maloric to lend you a hand with these knights. His magic will surely be more than enough to rip through them.

The ground shakes as the Seraphi heavy mage-knights begin moving in earnest, abandoning their shield wall formation in order to get up the ramp as fast as possible. Lynn holds his greatsword aloft in the air, causing your ears to fill with the clatter of metal as his knights assume their counter-charge formation. You’d only seen the Black Dragon Knights charge from a distance before – to be a part of it would be an incredible lesson in how to become a human wrecking ball. Not that you could follow their lead – knights relied a little too much on being the biggest, baddest, most heavily armoured douche on the battlefield. You naturally managed one of the three, could do another if you tried but one would forever be out of your reach.

As you summon magic from within yourself your senses catch a familiar power to your right. Out of the corner of your eye you see a Seraphi knight charging from the platform wall to the inner gatehouse. How did he get up there?

You freeze as you recognise the power. The enemy general was charging your gatehouse. To be more specific, he was charging where Maloric was – Malaine and his knights were still bombarding the enemy knights at this stage. If he lost his focus…

You…

“Lynn, cover this front,” you say before taking off as fast as you can.

It’s a fair distance between the gatehouse and the platform wall, so you assumed you’d have plenty of time to catch the daywalker. He was moving inhumanly fast, however. You instinctively knew that if you didn’t catch him before the wall he’d leap up it and…

Crash into the barrier on the inner wall? No, it was down and the gate was open. While Moss and his archers were still retreating the barrier was down, allowing your men through. That left your mages a stark choice – activate the barrier and close out the enemy knight charging the open gatehouse or else leave your archers in the midst of a heavy mage-knight running faster than any heavy mage-knight had business doing. You were confident in your running speed but to catch this monster you would need to run faster than you’d ever run before.

Or you could just fly, you suddenly realise. Pumping magic into your body you rapidly increase in speed and slam into the daywalker sword first. Your sword skates on the enchanted armour but the momentum of your flying tackle sends the daywalker flying. With practiced ease you reverse your momentum with magic and set your feet on the ground.

“Oh, it’s the boy,” says the knight. “Here I thought it might be York’s protégé, come to avenge him.”

You have no idea what he’s talking about. You’re preparing to call on Lyria’s rage, opening a telepathic connection, when suddenly his armour explodes. From within it stands a man who looks like he could probably benchpress ten of you. In fact, you think his bicep is as thick as your head.

“If you wish to dance with an immortal, boy, be my guest. I am the almighty Dalrec, vanquisher of your former master, slayer of…”

You tune him out once you realise he’s monologuing. Also, there’s a dragon in your head who wants to know what’s going on.

>1. Activate Black Dragon's Rage and attack Dalrec while he's distracted.

Accumulated Successes: 1 (from intercepting Dalrec)

If you’d heard right, this vampire claimed to have been the one to have killed Talon York. You hardly knew the man yourself, but he was a good man to go by what you’d heard. Avenging him would be satisfying.

With that in mind, you finally use the telepathic connection you’d formed with Lyria to draw on her rage. She offered it as freely as usual, the emotions of an ancient dragon flooding the link and drowning your mind and body. Power surged through your body, your blood seeming to superheat and boil in your veins. Where such a sensation would normally be pure pain, you instead feel pure strength. You can vaguely feel Lyria’s satisfaction on the other end of the link, as the dragon watches the proceedings through your mind as usual.

Your sword snaps out at the vampire in a chopping motion, with intent to open him from shoulder to waist. Dalrec spots your attack at the last second and you grin inwardly in delight as you realise he’ll be aware of your attack right before he dies.

A flash of light seems to erupt from Dalrec’s scabbard and you only barely realise that’s the speed of him drawing his sword to block. A jarring sensation runs up your arm as if you’d struck a solid block of steel, except you’re pretty sure you could cut through that anyway with this draconic strength. Before the shock clears your system your blade pushes through Dalrec’s, the enchantments in your blade overwhelming his and you scythe clean through his sword. That momentary delay is enough for the vampire however, and he steps back just out of reach. Your sword carries on the momentum of your swing, cleaving deep into the ancient stonework beneath your feet.

You spring backwards, dust flying up from the ground where you pull your sword free. Your face would show surprise were it not for the fact that your mind is overwhelmed with pure rage. Lyria covers that for you, with her surprise on the other end of the link just barely registering in your mind.

“Well, perhaps I dismissed you too quickly, boy,” Dalrec says, dropping his sword. “Perhaps you will make a better vampire than even York – and you’re even close enough in height to my beloved daughter to make a nice pairing.”

Later you’ll sincerely hope that nobody heard that, because they’ll no doubt interpret your enraged charge and shout as responding to the insult. For now, you’re not really paying attention as you’re channelling Lyria’s rage for as long as you have it.

They're not. You had a 20% chance of failing both rolls (combined), which is pretty damned good. You guys are just rolling god damn terribly.

>Target not met, both rolls

Your body is heaving under the exhaustion, sweat coating your body under your armour and increasing your discomfort rapidly. All that vanishes in your mind in an instant, as you enter the last minute of Lyria’s rage. Your senses are slowly returning and you can feel Lyria’s concern on the other end of the link. All you could feel was frustration.

The problem wasn’t your strength or skill – Dalrec couldn’t touch you, especially without his sword. You were at least as skilled as he was, and considerably stronger. No, the problem was that every time you rent him open he just regenerated in front of your eyes in the time it took to take another swing. You could reveal his heart to the world, with it spurting blood all over the stonework, his entrails spilling out from his body. Then they would just reassemble themselves within him, sometimes growing anew as bone and sinew reconstructed themselves.

“You can’t win this, you know?” he says. “Why don’t you merely give in?”

You would have answered him were it not for your current incoherence. Fortunately, a friend answers for you. Dalrec’s chests explodes into gore as a strange light on the ground bursts into it. Out of the corner of your eye you see Malaine’s knights making their return journey, and behind you is still the ongoing melee between the knights of both sides. You feel another snap of Maloric’s magic as a series of balls of goo snap onto Dalrec’s body as he heals.

The vampire snarls, using his superhuman strength to break free. “I’ll turn you, then end this fortress.”

He leaps at you, his wounds steaming where Mal’s magic sticks to them.

Yeah, all you need was one success. Dalrec's strong, but as Saul could smash Talon into little pieces with BDR as they both were at the start, it's no contest.

>Target met

Your sword snaps out in an instant and then you’re faced with two halves of Dalrec flying at you. The vampire look unconcerned by your attack, his fangs bared and gaze fixated on your face. You snarl in return as your body twists with the momentum on your swing. To an observer, it might look as though you’d made a mistake, bringing your face and neck closer to a vampire intent on eating them. At least Lyria knows better, her glee at what comes next mingling with the rage she’s still feeding you.

Your fist crashes into Dalrec’s face, breaking his extremely uncomfortable gaze. Then it breaks his nose, his jaw, most of his skull and then it’s through. You suddenly leap backwards, blood and gore splattering all over the stonework as Dalrec’s upper half follows you partway. His head is wrenched off your forearm with rapid twist of your arm and it flies into the nearby melee between the knights.

The vampire is assuredly dead, you think. You think that again as Maloric and the other battle mages hose down his corpse with magical blasts of fire. On the other hand, you’re still being pumped full of sweet, sweet draconic rage and the Seraphi knight still haven’t broken. Guess you’ll break a few of them.

>1. Plus 36% (rounded) surrender

You trudge back into the keep as the sun begins to fall behind the Marnn mountains. Behind you are Captains Malaine and Glynn. You’d broken the Seraphi knights rather quickly when you slammed into the middle of them while still under Lyria’s influence – something about an armored figured covered in gore tearing through heavily armoured knights like they were made of paper terrified them. You’d let the Dragon Knights mop up the fortress interior while you led Glynn’s Darlesians down the terraces and had Malaine prevent anybody from escaping.

In the end you’d wound up with slightly more than 500 captured, most of whom were wounded in some way. The rest were all dead or wounded badly enough that you didn’t care to spare the resources to save them – five hundred enemy soldiers was hard enough to keep under guard when you only had slightly more than a thousand men. You’d also wound up covered in blood and gore again, this time of your own doing. This time you’d shower after debriefing.

“Casualties?” you ask Cormann.

He shrugs. “Minimal. Moss’ archers took a bit of a beating, but we can heal most of it. Maybe a few dozen dead at most. The Black Dragons got a few scraped knees, though.”

“I can’t imagine how they’ll manage,” you say dryly.

“Should we give them an exemption from training and drills?” Cormann asks you, his face serious.

“I don’t see any other choice.”

“You can deal with the riot when you tell them that,” Lynn responds, his voice somehow managing to sound amused despite the magical filter it runs through. “On a more serious note, there was another daywalker.”

“The shadow one, yes. What happened to him?” you ask.

Lynn seems to freeze and the other officers look at you in surprise. You motion for them to hurry it up.

Shaking his head, “Sadly, he wasn’t as interesting as the one I hear you fought, General. When I cut his chest open he merely died.”

You weren’t sure that people could ‘merely die’ but you did like that Lynn was now speaking to you with slightly more respect. That was the first time he’d called you general. You mop up the remaining matters, mostly relating to timetabling. That and you need to get back in touch with the rest of the world – you’ve spent the last few days worrying about an RSK army. You don’t know what’s happened on the Vitrian front with Taour.

“I’ll contact the Vitrian towers,” Maloric says. “I’ll also speak to a friend in Worremburg about what happened here. Head this off at the pass before we have a Magister General knocking on our door.”

“You think he’d ask?” you ask Maloric.

“With his sword, maybe.”

You dismiss your officers and take a shower. It’s a long one. Afterwards, you make your way underground, checking up on the Source summoning. To your surprise, the news is good.

“We had planned on waiting until morning,” Magister Gareth tells you, “but if you’re interested in calling on your Champion now, then it scarcely matters. I doubt their immortal soul is going anywhere soon.”

“Shouldn’t this be a big event?” you ask.

“That might merely confuse matters. A Champion will obey the person they believe to be the most suitable – while I have no doubt that will be you, General, based on your feats, I see no reason to risk it.”

In other words, now’s probably the best chance.

Who do you pick as your Champion?

>cont, with Champion choices

To speed this up, the Source (huge magic channelling source) below Harrowmont enables you to summon a (formerly) dead warrior whose soul is tied to it. They'll start weaker than they were in life, but will gain power as you claim Places of Power that are connected to the Source.

Note that the Champions this time are mutually exclusive. The ones you don't choose will be meaningfully occupied and harder to obtain than in the original AEQ.
>>
>>44256209
Sure but thinking logistically we cant afford to look over our shoulders at them all the time. We need to secure food and land in a timely manner to bring the fight to Taour and Vitria. Going through the process of bargaining 500 soldiers will take time, resources and effort I dont think we have.

>1. Female Pure Earth Elemental, Gnome
Mage-killer and construction support. Pure elementals are the most powerful type of elemental and have a strong connection to the land, and Gnome is the oldest and most powerful of all elementals. She can manipulate earth and stone with ease, and also specialises in manipulating the flow of magical energies. This makes her ideal for fighting mages and constructing fortifications and grand projects.

>2. Female Pure Water Elemental, Undine
All-rounder. Although young, Undine is extremely capable and knowledgeable. On top of her immensely powerful control and summoning abilities relating to water, she can also imitate many human sorceries. Ideal at long-range support but also effective in melee. She also is adept at assisting in management and negotiations on the home front.

>3. Female Nine-tailed Mystic Fox, Taira
Heavy artillery and support caster. Mystic foxes are powerful spiritualists and extremely knowledgeable and Taira is the oldest and most powerful of them all. She is weak up-close but her powerful magicks allow her to easily obliterate entire armies or destroy otherwise lethal foes with anti-magic attacks. She also has teleportation. At home she is a promiscuous trouble-maker and will be more of a hindrance than an asset.

>4. Female Elven Champion, Esraveel
Super-heavy warrior. As both Daerfir, a subspecies of elf dedicated to combat, and their Champion, a magically modified killing machine, Esraveel specialises in dealing death. At her peak she is more than a match for the strongest of fighters and can demolish droves of enemies in melee, while also unleashing volleys of magical arrows. She lacks much in the way of social or leadership skills and as such would be little more than a bodyguard outside of combat.

Huh, way more support for Esra than I thought there'd be and less for Taira. Where'd that come from? This will probably end up having a second vote between the two leaders.

>>44256403
Really powerful warrior dies, their soul gets trapped in the Source until somebody more powerful than them dies or they get summoned as Champion.

>>44256395
Because last time nobody voted for the guys. I figured to even out the odds by making them all waifu-candidates.

>>44256320
Err, you were only affected by Lyria's rage for about 30 seconds. Choosing to slaughter them en masse wasn't the dragon's fault. Mind you, your men don't particularly mind - they've done worse things than run down some enemy soldiers.

Gnome has 12 votes, Esra 10 and Taira 7 as of writing this, so the final vote is between Gnome and Esra.

Also, reasons for choosing them are appreciated.
>>
>>44256551
I feel like Gnome would have better chemistry than the rest with a younger protagonist, the construction projects were way too fun to ignore and I feel like we need to have someone old and mature enoug to be exasperated at Saul now and again.

Rolled 2 (1d2)

Pretty much impossible to pick a winner. I was going to roll a d2, but in the end I'm actually most sympathetic to the arguments that Gnome supplements the PC abilities the most. Esra would definitely provide a very different feel to the quest but I'm hoping a different MC does that as is.

So, yeah, it's Gnome. Her being slightly more boring didn't outweigh the technical arguments (in my view).

Also, I'll roll a dice anyway just to see what the result would have been if I'd just done that.

>1. Gnome

You’d expected something different for the Champion summoning. Instead you just stood at one end of the room while Gareth and his mages conducted the ritual. You would have played cards or something but you were tense with anticipation as to who would be the Champion. There were countless knights and mages you could think of that might be candidates.

Or maybe a dragon…

A sudden flash of light signals the end of the summoning ritual and before you stands… a giant. She was tall, and you were used to being smaller than most people and even many women, but this woman towered over you. She was clad in several layers of thick clothing, with a high collar. Her green eyes seem to pierce yours as she weighed you up. You were a little distracted by the rest of her, including her brown skin and the enormous maille gloves she wore that were covered with what you suspected to be dwarven runes.

“At first glance, I’d ask you to take me to your lord,” the Champion says, her face expressionless. “You do appear to be more than you seem, however. Or at least, you have a familiar that suggests as such. Summon them, so that I can see that you for what you truly are.”

That was going to be hard, you thought. You didn’t think Lyria would care to fly down here just to say hi to this woman. Then again, if you weren’t going insane this was the Gnome, the oldest and most powerful pure elemental alive.

When exactly had she died?

“Well?” she asks you, raising an eyebrow and tilting her head to one side.

You…

Well, if she is Gnome maybe Lyria will be interested? Hoping that you’re not disturbing her sleep, you open a telepathic link with the dragon.

“Saul, it’s been a few hours, surely you have better things to do than badger me every five minutes,” Lyria says to you the very instant you make contact.

“Err, did I wake you?” you ask her, afraid you’ve contacted her at the worst possible time.

“I do things other than sleep.”

Like eating, you think. Then stop thinking when you hear the rumble of her growl over the link. Moving right along then. You explain the situation, ignoring the curious look you’re getting from the Champion in front of you and the shuffling of the mages around you.

“Are you sure it’s Gnome?” Lyria prompts you.

“She wants to know if you’re really Gnome,” you say to the Champion.

The room falls silent, save the sound of your breathing. Perhaps you could have worded that better.

“She? Your familiar you mean? Did she recognise me?” Gnome asks.

You shake your head. “No, I did. You’re rather distinctive.” Taking Gnome’s answer as an affirmative, you tell Lyria that it’s Gnome.

“Yes, I heard and can see her now. Also, my god, they’re bigger than I heard,” Lyria says. “Well, you’ve certainly done well to net her. What do you want me to do about her?”

“Visit her? Prove you’re really my familiar?” you ask, trying to make your voice sound sugary sweet.

Gnome is looking at you very strangely now, then she gestures to Gareth to approach. You’d interfere but Lyria is doing a good job at keeping your mental faculties occupied.

“You’re cute, but not my master yet, Saul,” Lyria reminds you. “Tell her she can visit me if she cares to. Otherwise you can prove your worth to her yourself.”

With that Lyria’s presence retreats, but you note that she hasn’t closed the link. Clearly she’s interested in what’s going on here. Gnome returns the look you give her, turning away from Gareth.

“Done talking to your familiar? Judging by the fact she hasn’t appeared I’m assuming you’re not summoning her,” Gnome says, crossing her arms and giving you a smirk. “Well, how do you intend on proving your worth as my master?”

4. Other combo.

Ask if we can wait until on the proving thing since we just finished washing the day walker off of us (subtle display of prowess). Offer to giver her a tour of her potential reconstruction project (the ruins of this city) while giving her an update of our situation. Then reevaluate how she wants us to prover ourself.

You glance at Gareth for a moment who simply shrugs with a smile. Well, at least somebody in the room was confident you could convince Gnome of your worth.

“I’m confident in your abilities, child,” Lyria tells you telepathically.

Well, if you think about things you’ve done recently then the two thousand plus corpses littering your fortress probably mean something. And your army. And the fact you have a fortress.

You know what, maybe you should try that.

“Well, I’m the general of the mercenary company that controls this fortress and the surrounding land,” you say proudly. “I’m happy to take you on a tour through the fortress.”

Gnome quirks an eyebrow at you. “Why does a mercenary company control a fortress and any land whatsoever?”

“Because we intend on forming an empire.”

“And who will be the emperor?”

“Me, of course.”

You thought that Gnome laughed for a second, but that was just Lyria. The earth elemental was smiling, however. Rubbing the back of your neck you gesture towards the stairs and begin walking. Gareth looks like he’s about to say something to stop you but Gnome places a hand on his shoulder and follows you outside the ritual circle and up the stairs.

“The fortress is a bit rundown, but we are beginning to rebuild it,” you explain as you walk through the recently remediated underground levels. “There’s not much of a view right now, due to all the corpses of our attackers, but once we get rid of those we’ll be able to begin planning the complete reconstruction. I’ve read that this fortress was even more magnificent than Fortun to the north when it was built to hold off the shadowbeasts.”

It takes you several steps to realise that Gnome has stopped following you. Turning back to her you see that she’s giving you an odd look. You’re not sure what to make of it.

“The corpses of your enemies?” she asks you.

Oh, that. “We were attacked by daywalkers earlier today, leading an army of Seraphi knights. They weren’t too much trouble, although the daywalker general gave me more trouble than I expected.”

“Daywalkers are trouble in general, so that’s not surprising,” Gnome says, glancing at the handful of mages in the great hall. Cormann’s going over their work in the morning and gives you and the Champion a glance. You give him a wave, and he nods back before going back to his work.

“Who was it that you fought?” Gnome asks.

“His name was Dalrec. Nobody seemed to know him much,” you say.

Clearly Gnome knew him, given the double take she gives you. Before she can say anything you suddenly think of something, “Actually, can the proving wait? I spent almost an hour in the shower cleaning that Dalrec out of my hair and would prefer to spend an afternoon remaining clean. I can still finish the tour.”

You see Gnome mouthing the words ‘out of my hair’ and smile inwardly. Sometimes you can be ingenius, you think, ignoring Lyria’s attempt to correct you.

Gnome shakes her head. “There is no proving to be done. I’ve already made my decision when I stepped out of the circle. I do appreciate your earnestness, however.

“I am Gnome, young warlord. I believe you’re the first warrior I’ve served in many centuries so I do hope that I can support your dreams,” Gnome says, staring down into your eyes. “Now, you said you had a shower? It’s been almost two decades since I’ve had one.”

As you don’t have a room prepared for her with working facilities, you have her use yours. Lyria also leaves you be finally. While Gnome is taking what she tells you will be a very long shower, you…

Anyway, I'll be doing one brief scene then setting the strategic stage with a final update ready for the next thread.

Apologies for the length of the Gnome introduction. I tried to use it as both a way to do some more characterisation of Saul as well as Gnome, which I hope worked out well.

I'd prefer a general staff meeting to go over our short term plans to secure the fortress and scout out our nearest enemies, but since Gnome should be there for that we might as well check in on Mal and see if he's dug anything interesting up in the meantime.

If you’re going to get too much further in your conquest, you’re going to need to rely heavily on mages. You’re not really one to deal with them, but Maloric is. Combined with his abilities at enchantment and he’s one of the most vital resources you have.

When you find him in his workshop in the sole standing tower in the keep he’s merely reading a spellbook. He glances at you when you enter and puts it down, giving you his attention.

“Any business, Waise, or are we holding the strategy meeting early?” Maloric asks you.

You take a seat, noting absently that there appears to be a lot of liquor in one of his cabinets. “No, it’s not that. Mostly I wanted to speak to you regarding how things are faring on the mage front. I know that you want to form a mage tower, but I’m unaware of the specific requirements of it.”

He shrugs. “Not much. I’ll need a few references from other towers to get in on most of the agreements the towers have with one another. The real complexity is that if we’re going to set up the Tower of Harrowmont to support this little empire we’re forming then we need the empire to be recognised.”

“Diplomacy,” you say with a frown.

“Pretty much. All we really need is for some nobles to vouch we’re a real nation and we’ll be able to get in on the real agreements that let us manage banking and attract some talent from other nations,” he explains.

You’re pretty sure that this sort of thing will take care of itself, so long as you don’t anger too many people. Something tells you that having either the League or the RSK wanting to destroy you will make recruiting prospects dim, at least at this stage of the game. You ask Maloric about…
