Three years have passed since our world first came under attack from invaders from another world. These invaders, Neighbours, entered into our world through gates in Mikado City. Conventional weapons had no effect on these enemies; however when all hope seemed lost, the Border Defense Agency (Border) fought back the invasion using mysterious weapons utilising the weapons known as "triggers", allowing the use of trion to battle. Today, life in Mikado City goes on as normal, Border serving as our world's protection from the inhabitants of the Neighbourhood.

You are a newly minted C-Rank agent, having just passed the aptitude test, you are ready to begin your tenure within the Border Defense Agency, and to learn how to use triggers to battle neighbours.

But first, are you a boy or a girl?

What is your experience with the Neighbours?

>Tragic: During the first large scale invasion, your house was destroyed. You managed to escape but your father wasn't so lucky.

>Cursory: You were present in Mikado City at the time of the invasion and witnessed first hand the tragedies that struck. However you didn't suffer any yourself, you and your family were successfully evacuated.

>Unknown: You don't have any personal experience with the invasion, rather you recently moved to the city. Joining Border was more out of a sense of adventure than out of revenge.

It would be hilarious/awesome if we had a blank/dour enough usual expression people just assumed something horrible had happened when in reality we're just a blue collar worker sort of guy just doing his job, and simply aren't the most expressive.

You are Takayama Daisuke, a first year student in senior high school and a 16 year old boy. About three months ago, you and your family moved here from Kagoshima, your parents stating a desire for a change in scenery. Since then you've more or less been adjusting to life within the city, and trying to overcome the challenges of speaking in standard Japanese rather than dialect.

It was about the time when you first came into contact with Border, sure you'd seen the PR on tv since you'd first moved into the city, encouraging new recruits and explaining the joys and skills of the defense agency. However, your first hands on experience with the agency was when one of the squads came to your school to give a presentation. It was blatant propaganda to be sure but it was good propaganda, fighting Neighbours and getting paid for it seemed like a pretty good way to have fun, and hell maybe even make some new friends. It was the second aspect that you stressed to your parents.

A few weeks later, and following the written and fitness exams, you find yourself a newly minted member of Border. With the C-Rank trigger to match. Today is your first day of real training, you find yourself assembled in the enlistment room, along with the other new trainees. Before you stands a serious looking man,

"I am HQ Director, Masafumi Shinoda, I welcome your enlistment. Today you become C-Rank Agents, it means you're enlisted as trainees but it means that the future of Mikado City and its people rests on you. I want you to work hard to become official agents. I look forward to the day when we can fight together."

He salutes and the trainees do so in response.

"The orientation will soon begin, however first we must split you off into the roles which you wish to fulfill. Those who wish to become attackers or gunners please remain here, those who intend to become snipers. Please follow Azuma-san over there," Masafumi points to a young man standing towards the door towards the back of the room.

Your first major decision as a border agent, what will it be?

>Attacker: Attackers are melee fighters, and fight in the front of the formation.

>Gunner: Gunners are ranged combatants who take up the middle of the formation.

>Sniper: Snipers are ranged fighters who take up positions away from the combat and provide fire.

Sniper, you're going to be a sniper. You move towards Azuma, the experienced sniper's eyes looking around the room as he begins to take notice of the amount of recruits coming his way. You're one of the first, but you soon take notice as others begin to join you. It appears that there are a grand total of nine of you, far less than the attackers and gunners, but that's not particularly suprising.

"Is this everyone?" The man asks, "Well then, follow me."

The man leads the group of you towards another room, a nervous silence settling over the trainees as you move. Eventually your destination is reached, and the door opens wide. Before you is a gigantic room, one that seems to stretch on forever.

"This is our sniper training hall, it stretches on for 360 metres. It is here where you will be training for today," Azuma states, "however first, I'd like to go over the sniper triggers. There are three, Ibis, Eaglet, and Lightning."

"Ibis is our heavy sniper, it focuses on pure explosive power and is for taking down heavy enemies. However, it's shots are slow and reloading takes a while. Making it harder to hit the target, every shot must count."

"Eaglet is the standard type, it focuses on distance and on accuracy. Consider it the all-rounder."

"Finally, we have Lightning. Lightning is the rapid-fire and lightweight sniper. It's rapid fire and accuracy mean it's easier to hit the target, but the damage is lessened. Like killing with quantity over one big hit.

"Okay, come and get your triggers," Azuma says his voice maintaining the same serious tone it has the entire day.

You approach and grab the eaglet trigger, as do most of the others present. You hold the grip in your hands for a while, growing accustomed to the feel of it.

"Without further ado, it's time to start training, show me what you've got," Azuma states.

You approach one of the stands, allowing for the red target to materialise in front of you. It's a decent distance away, it won't be an easy shot but it's definitely not a challenging one. A basic test to test your aptitude you suppose.

"Trigger on," You state calmly, and the trigger grip in your hand becomes a sniper rifle before your very eyes.

You crouch down and take position, taking care to line the shot up with your rifle. Peering down the scope towards the target. You take a deep breath, and fire.

The bullet exits the barrel of the sniper with a satisfying bang, smoke rising from the gun's tip. You take a moment to soak in the fact that you're actually shooting a sniper rifle before looking down the scope to confirm your shot. To your surprise, you nailed it, straight through the middle, a damn near perfect shot. You fire off another two shots, and whilst they are less accurate than your first they are still well above average, with both hitting the centre of the target.

"Well shit," You hear a voice behind you, "That's some nice shooting."

You turn around to see another one of the trainees, with a goofy grin on his face. He's actually leaning on the gigantic Ibis that he's supposed to be using for training and seems very nonchalant about the whole thing.

"You're a pretty good shot," He smiles, "Better than me, and that's saying something. The names Ueda Kintaro by the way. Kintaro's fine though. Who are you?"

What do you answer?

"Takayama Daisuke," You answer his greeting with a smile, "Pleasure to meet you. But aren't you a trainee as well, why are you so confident in your own ability?"

Kintaro shrugs with a smile, "My sister's been a B-Rank agent for a few months now. Every now and then she'll take me into the forbidden zone and teach me how to shoot."

"Isn't that not allowed?" You ask, somewhat incredulously.

"Not if you don't get caught," Kintaro grins again, "Say, wanna help each other out? Together we can get the 4000 points to move up to B-Rank easily."

"Points?" You ask.

He facepalms, "That's right, they haven't explained points yet. Ok, so basically we all start with a 1000, if the brass thinks your something special they'll give you a little extra boost. To get to B-Rank we need 4000, we get that through training or through rank wars. Of course, rank wars for a sniper are a bit ehhh because we're not really one-on-one combatants."

You nod in response.

"You can check the back of your hand to be sure," He smiles.

You do so, it seems you have 1,550 points, so your aptitude results gave you a little boost? That's helpful.

"I've got 1,800 myself," Kintaro grins, "But having a training partner is really useful. It means we can correct each other's mistakes and do some off-duty practice together."

But for now," He hoists the Ibis over his shoulder, "We should get back to shooting, the more targets we decimate the more points we get."

With that the boy saunters off, whistling a little tune as he does so. With that you turn your attention back to the targets in front of you and continue to fire shots.

For the rest of the training session you continue to keep up your good accuracy, it seems you definitely have a knack for this. You take your last shot, the bullet passes once more through the centre of the target, just short of the bullseye.

"That's enough for now," Azuma announces, as one more bang goes off following his announcement, "Turn off your triggers and follow me."

You allow for your eaglet to revert back into the grip and fall into line behind the instructor. Kintaro comes up beside you and wraps his arm around your shoulders, giving you a grin.

"The fun part's coming."

Eventually the group of trainees reach another room, with a series of weird looking rooms.

"These are our training rooms, it's time to put that shooting skill to use. You'll be placed in a scenario where you have to face off against an enemy Neighbour. Remember, maintain your distance, maintain a calm head, and don't worry. You won't run out of trion, and you won't die, so go all out."

"Takayama, care to start us off."

You approach the training room and enter, as Azuma approaches the control panel.

Before your very eyes, the room around you changes to a cityscape and before your very eyes a Neighbour materialises not 20 metres away from you.

"Trigger on!" You delcare, the grip in your hands once more becoming your sniper rifle.

The choice is obvious, you have to move, a sniper at close range is a dead sniper. You dive out of the way as the neighbour looks at you, the monster beginning charging up a beam of raw energy in it's mouth. You run away, sniper rifle held in your hands as you dart through the streets. With that you hear the surefire sound of the neighbour blasting away one of the buildings. It's then that it turns to follow you, it's slow gait allowing you to create more distance between the two of you as you run. You turn over your shoulder to look at the Neighbour once more, seeing that it's once more charging another shot. You turn for another street or alley to duck into, only to find that there are none in sight.

"Shit," You curse under your breath.

Your eyes dart around, before you find a window in the house next to you, you dive through the glass, allowing it to shatter as you land on the floor. Looking up you see the blast of trion outside the window, shooting right where you just were standing. You grip her rifle tighter, and look around. There are stairs in the house, which means that it has an upper floor. Maybe a higher vantage point would give you an advantage over the Neighbour. However, you do have the speed advantage, you could keep making distance until it couldn't get near to you anymore. Alternatively, you could just finish it now, lean out the window and bam, right in the face.

Whilst you consider your options, you hear the slow bangs against the ground as the Neighbour steadily approaches.

You look around you, before seeing the backdoor and darting out of it. You find yourself in the house's small yard, the fences between it and the other houses obscuring your view of their yards. Not that it matters, surely the Neighbour doesn't know your location in regards to where you were a short while ago. You look around for what you need, before seeing it. Where the houses stop, another street. You draw your Eaglet and fire it, the rifle easily decimating the small wooden fences in it's way. You sprint once more through the gaps, rushing through the abandoned yards of the houses until you reach the next street. You then turn to continue running, your ears still piercing for booming sound of the neighbour. AS you rush along the suburban street, you finally see what you're looking for. A small apartment block, maybe four stories, the cornerstone of a neighbourhood on the border between suburban and urban. You duck inside, looking for the fire escape, and sprint up the stairs. After a painstaking and exhausting few seconds you finally get to the top of the roof.

You scan through your scope for the Neighbour and eventually see it, it doesn't seem to know where you are, but it won't be an easy shot. If you miss, you risk alerting it to your presence.

You take a deep breath, look down the scope, and fire. There's another satisfying bang as the bullet leaves the barrel. The bullet slams into the trion soldier's head, ripping through it and letting it bleed trion. You smile to yourself at your victory, only for it to turn towards you. You missed it's weak point, the Neighbour was hit, but you didn't hit the right spot to kill it. It's mouth begins to glow again, it's weak point glowing with light as it aims another shot at you.

You panic, you can take another shot, kill it before it kills you again. Alternatively, you can do the safer thing and duck and cover and avoid the shot. You grip on to your gun, it's now or never, time to make a choice.

You look away from the scope, and look around at the other buildings around you, desperate for an escape route. Eventually you see it, a building exceedingly close, about a story shorter. You sprint towards the other building, right as the Neighbour fires, jumping as it aims at you. You hit the ground of the other building, rolling as you do so. Your right hand still desperately clutching your Eaglet. The building you were standing on earlier is half rubble, you breathe heavily, and move to stand up, only to collapse to the ground.

You stare down at your leg, your left foot has been blown clean off, you can't feel it but it doesn't hurt. The trion falling out and scattering ont he wind the most evident sign of the injury. You take a deep breath, and look back towards the neighbour. It's difficult to tell but it seems it's looking towards you again. You look around you again, there's a ladder leading down to the ground, you could probably use that to escape if the need be. However, you could also roll behind the railing if you so wanted.

You push yourself to your knee, ignoring the trion bleeding out of your missing foot. You steady yourself and raise up your rifle to eye level, you examine the neighbour. The monster's own trion bleeding out of its wounded head in the same way that yours is bleeding out of your left leg.

It's lined up another shot straight at you, the point in it's mouth that serves as both the origin of its shots and its weakest point both pointing straight in your direction. You can almost hear the distant hum of the trion being collected before being fired, it looks like the battle will all come down to this single shot. If you make it, you win, if you miss you die. It's an interesting irony, but not one you're particularly interested in exploring at the current point. You have to focus on making the shot, just like earlier in the day.

You squeeze the trigger. As if in slow motion the bullet pierces the soldier's mouth-eye-thing, the beast pausing for a second before exploding into a burst of trion. The bright green light filling your vision. You lower your rifle and release your breath. Allowing your body to release the excess adrenaline that you've built up. As you crouch there, breathing, the cityscape slowly fades. Revealing you to be back in the training room, your foot back and your fellow trainees surrounding the room. You slowly step up and exit, allowing for the sniper rifle to return to its idle form as you exit.

A cold and mechanical female voice speaks, "Agent Takayama Daisuke, time 3 minutes and 2 seconds."

Azuma nods at you as you rejoin the rest of the trainees, Kintaro gives you a thumbs up, while the rest of the group seem to be composing themselves for their own matches.

"Yukimura," Azuma states, and a girl who looks to be about 14 or 15 moves to enter the training room, an obviously nervous face betraying her feelings.

You shake your head and look back towards the monitor, the girl is hiding behind one of the buildings in the starting area, clutching her Eaglet rifle to her chest. She eventually looks around the wall, and sees the neighbour fire off a huge shot at her. The building is decimated and the dust covers the scene.

"Excessive trion loss, bail out. Agent Yukimura defeated," The female voice states.

A few moments later, the girl exits the room, awkwardly rubbing her arm and looking red and embarrassed. Maybe you did better than you thought you did?

>Session One End

I have to go for now, but before I do, thoughts? Criticisms? Should I continue to run the quest?

There's enough to work with in the core conceit (alien invaders battled with unique superguns wielded by military-trained defenders) that you can get a fain number of plots out there.

Characterization is important, both of people, the aliens and of the environment itself. Thought process and reflection can go a long way towards helping get into the mindset of the character.

All in all, I'd play this again.

I've archived the thread, I'll run another session tomorrow, about the same time if anyone would be interested in continuing
