You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, and you must look like quite the sketchy customer right now.

Your fellow Captain Kyōraku Shunsui has been rather trounced in your recent duel, and you've taken the time to wrap him up in his own garish pink hoari before slinging him over your shoulder. The end of your zanpakuto's sheath has been thrust into the knot in Shunsui's clothing, allowing you to trail him behind you almost like a cloak.

“Hold still,” you insist, “or I'll shave off your beard.”

He laughs the threat off. “Don't do that, if you did I'd lose all my masculine charm!”

“You really weren't taking our fight seriously, were you?”

“Not in the least,” Shunsui admits. “I just wanted to make it look like I tried, so nobody'd bug me about it later.”

You sigh, picking up the pace a little in hopes that you can avoid anyone else seeing you until you get to the Head Captain's office. “If you weren't so lazy you might have taken the Old Man's place by now.”

“Now you're giving me too much credit,” he replies calmly. “I just don't have the work ethic. You'd probably make the better Head Captain of the two of us.”

“What makes you think I've got the patience?” you ask with a smirk.

Although you've been frustrated lately at the amount of people willing to dogpile on you for an apparent murder you haven't actually committed yet, something good has actually come out of this last encounter. While fighting against Shunsui Tenkotsuki managed to confirm that he was indeed under the active influence of Captain Aizen, who is still alive and well. You also confirmed that he was likely nearby, hiding himself with a reiatsu-blocking cloak.

You consider briefly what you intend to tell the Head Captain when you finally arrive...
>Explain to him that Aizen is alive.
>Explain to him that Rukia's execution is likely part of a larger plan.
>Explain to him that you intend to prevent the execution.
>Ask him what he thinks should be done after the Central 46's latest round of orders.

You find the Head Captain waiting in his office, along with a now all-too familiar face. Next to him stands Lieutenant Hinamori, who appears to have left her zanpakuto at the Third Division's barracks this time. When she sees you, she immediately looks down and avoids eye contact.

“She seems embarrassed,” Rosa comments. “Wonder what could've happened?”

“You appear to have appropriated one of my officers,” Yamamoto observes, as if it were the least interesting or unusual thing he's seen all day. “I take it he was pretending to attempt an arrest?”

Shunsui offers a sheepish laugh. “Guess I must be getting predictable in my old age?”

“Aren't we all,” you grumble, letting the man down off your back. “I'm here to file a report, Head Captain.”

“How very thoughtful,” the man replies calmly. “Do share.”

After checking with Tenkotsuki, you begin.

“I found that the Captain here was under direct influence,” you explain, looking over Hinamori warily. “It seems our mutual friend is hard at work. He also had a reiatsu-blocking cloak similar to the type Urahara used to employ during his time as a member of the Onmitsukidō. I have no doubt that's part of how he's remained undetected for so long.”

“I see,” Yamamoto nods sternly. “It sounds as if the man has quite a head on his shoulders. How regrettable he has turned to this.”

“Those orders from Central 46 have got to be bogus,” you add. “That breaks with standard operating procedure on so many levels. You know it, Shunsui knows it. Even my cat knows it.”

“Can I go now, sir?” Shunsui asks lamely at the mention of his name, to which Yamamoto nods.

“I will keep you apprised. Until that time remain alert.”

The Head Captain gives you a look that makes it clear he expects you to continue speaking, but Lieutenant Hinamori's presence gives you some pause.

“Lieutenant,” you pause, directing your attention towards Hinamori. “Why are you here, exactly?”

After settling down from the surprise of being addressed directly, she finds her words. “I... Captain Ichimaru spoke to me. After I... you know. Attacked you and Rangiku.”

Gin did what now?

“And what did Gin tell you, exactly?” you ask, keeping your tone of voice as calm and controlled as is possible for you. “Nothing too scandalous I hope?”

She shakes her head. “No, nothing bad. He told me the kind of person you are, Captain, though he was scant with the details.”

“That sounds like him,” you nod. “So, what kind of person am I?”

“The kind who would take in two starving orphans from the Rukongai and raise them as her own, to repay a kindness done to her when she was in the same position.”

“Ah, so he told you about that, did he?” you muse, understanding that this knowledge must give you more of a human image to Hinamori. “Yes, I adopted Gin and Rangiku when they were younger. But I don't see what this has to do with the current situation.”

“You raised the man who became my Captain,” Hinamori explains. “He trusts you, and I trust him. So, it's only fair that I trust you too, Captain.”

“I can explain to you how his sword works,” you continue, after giving Lieutenant Hinamori a respectful nod of recognition. It's good to have her off your back, and you suspect that Gin will be happy about the new situation as well. Though, it may be best not to overload her with news of Aizen's treachery just yet: the Head Captain seems to be thinking the same.

“It's an illusion-type that controls the senses,” you explain. “Given his associates we've surmised that it either cannot control reiatsu sensing or that it has a specific triggering prerequisite that must be seen.”
>1/2
>>
>>44143851
A nod tells you that the Head Captain understands the implication that Tōsen is party to the conspiracy. “I believe the latter is definitely true.”

So he's gone around showing the other Captains his release, and likely the Lieutenants as well. That's certainly inconvenient.

“And his Bankai?”

“Unknown,” you reply. “It seems his shikai has been adequate so far.”

“Are there any other weaknesses?”

“His presence on the battlefield with Shunsui suggests either a limited range or limited precision. He may not be able to control the senses when he cannot estimate what his victim should be seeing or feeling.”

The Head Captain ponders this new information quietly for a few moments.

“Sir, ma'am?” Hinamori interrupts. “If I may ask, who is it you're talking about?”

“A rogue shinigami,” you tell her, neglecting to mention names, “who may well be behind this whole mess... among other crimes against the Seireitei. You should be careful whom you place your faith in, Hinamori. There are some who might seek to use your distress over Captain Aizen to their advantage.”

“I see,” she nods. “I've already been foolish, haven't I? All because I idolized Captain Aizen, and couldn't believe he could be wrong.”

“The Aizen you idolized never existed,” you sigh, provoking a confused look from the Lieutenant. “Often the most dangerous illusions are the ones we invent for ourselves, which trick us into thinking our perception is absolute reality. Even if someone comes to you wearing Aizen's face, it's not going to be the Aizen you thought you knew.”

“Wow,” Rosa mutters inside your head. “I think you mighta gone too deep for her.”

But to your surprise, Hinamori merely nods in apparent understanding. “Thank you for the warning, Captain.”

After bowing, first to you and then to the Head Captain, she departs.

“Your face belies an old soul,” he grumbles. “But at times your words betray you, Captain. I have nothing but pity in my heart for the whelps you will lead when you are my age.”

“No higher praise,” you reply casually, but you can do nothing to suppress your smile. “I hope you understand that I don't intend to let Rukia die, assuming that's what Aizen is aiming for.”

“And I know the part I must play,” the Head Captain bows slightly. “Please be prepared. It may sting.”

You decide that it would be best to stop by your Division, to see how things are progressing. When you arrive you're treated to an unusual sight and sensation: there are far more people here than there should be, perhaps a hundred more than the total compliment of the Ninth at full strength. One of them feels like they could be a Lieutenant or higher.

That can only mean one thing: that your Division is indeed under house arrest.

“Tenkotsuki!” you order quietly.

Your sword warps the light around you at your request. “Of course. They will not see us coming.”

True to her boast, none of the guards posted around your Division seem to notice your stealthy approach. After some scouting, you determine that the Lieutenant you felt is none other than Amagai. You've never met him, but the Fifth Division armband he wears tells you that much.

It seems Aizen's own unit is the one he sent after your Division. You have to wonder whether he did so through false orders from the Central 46 or through the cooperation of his Lieutenant

This is a joke, right?

The Fifth Division shinigami are patrolling on far too sporadic a schedule, only making infrequent passes by major thoroughfares into and within the Ninth Division grounds. Far too poor coverage given how many of them there are. Once you're in there's an even greater shock, as you find most of the shinigami “keeping guard” are so relaxed it's almost a disgrace. If your own fireteams didn't have direct orders to comply with this nonsense they'd have snapped every neck the Fifth Division sent their way.

You quickly find your way to Kai's quarters, where a sleepy-looking sentry stands guard outside the door. Quick use of Hakufuku puts the man on his ass, sleeping soundly like he hasn't a care in the world.

“They're a sloppy lot,” you greet Kai, who strains to see your outline in the candlelight. “I could have waltzed in here even without Tenkotsuki's help.”

“They took my sword,” Kai grumbles mutinously. “I hate that.”

You shrug, though you quickly realize the futility of the gesture. “Sorry. It'll be over soon.”

“Aizen's starting to make his move?”

“Close as I can figure, yes,” you reply. “Mirai and the boy wonder are working on Bankai as we speak. No guarantees they'll be able to deliver in the time allotted.”

“You'll still get Lady Rukia, right?” he asks. “I mean I'd hate to see her die like this.”

“If it comes down to it,” you sigh, “I'll do it by myself.”

“That's good,” Kai replies quietly, laying on his futon and crossing his arms behind his head. “She's a good kid. Good potential.”

“What can I say? I know how to pick 'em. So how's the Division?”

“Holding tight, ma'am,” Kai assures you. “The second I think the time's right we'll bust outta here.”
>1/2
>>
>>44145371
“You'll be dealing with Amagai,” you observe. “Will you be alright?”

“I've got a guy who can get me Kamitinbe back,” Kai explains. “It'll be fine, trust me.”

“Aizen chose him for a reason,” you point out, to which Kai merely nods. “Make your first strike the last.”

“I'm itching to get somethin' done,” he tells you. “But I'll be sure it gets done right, boss.”

“Good man.”

Next, you make your way to the Valley of Screams. It's not a difficult task, seeing as the Fifth Division is still so lax. What you find is really quite amusing.

Halibel is sitting on a boulder, holding the denreishinki you left her in her hands with a look of intense focus, as if she expects it to suddenly hatch like a baby chick or something similarly interesting. You have to wonder how long she's been sitting like this.

“They say a watched kettle never boils,” you greet her, taking a seat on a rock opposite hers.

She slides the phone-like device into her yellow sash. “I was feeling bored. Being vigilant with no promise of immediate action can be tiring.”

“I'd trade places with you in a heartbeat!” you laugh. “Far too much going on for my tastes.”

You quickly fill her in on the relevant details regarding the capture of most of the human invaders, the progress of Renji, Mirai, and Ichigo towards Bankai, and the fact that you've now determined for sure that Aizen is somehow alive and operating within the Seireitei.

“It's good to have confirmation,” she replies. “But you mentioned that your Division is under house arrest? Will you need our assistance sooner?”

“We may,” you admit. “They'll have their own battles to manage of course.”

>This arrangement should still work, but I'll be sure to supply you accurate target data.

“This should still be fine,” you conclude, gently massaging the back of your neck. “We'll just have to be sure to define targets clearly... how well can any of you sense reiatsu?”

Halibel rises to her feet, leading you towards where you can feel the others. “It would be best to allow Apacci to explain.”

After Halibel explains to her horny companion, Apacci thinks hard for several long moments. Finally, she seems to settle on a good way to describe her and her companions' reiatsu sensing technique.

“Think of it like sonar,” she tells you. “Pesquisa bounces a pulse of our own reiatsu off anything else with reiatsu. Least, anything worth noticing.”

“So you can sense direction, strength, and distance?” you ask.

Apacci nods thoughtfully. “Not as developed as what you seem to have, but it works. Why you asking?”

“I was hoping to teach you a new trick,” you explain, drawing out Tenkotsuki. “I'm gonna rely on her descriptions of it, but it may be good to teach you a spell called Kakushitsuijaku. It should help you further refine that skill.”

“Forget teaching her kidō,” Tenkotsuki insists. “She has a useful ability in this 'pesquisa', so we can work from there.”

You convey Tenkotsuki's explanations of how exactly Kakushitsuijaku is supposed to work, how it locates an area of interest through successive layers of refinement using the incantation and inscriptions to focus. A lot of the finer details on how these layers function are lost on her, but you try your best to offer some more plain-spoken, user-friendly advice.

With one finger, you use your reiatsu to scrawl on the floor as if casting Tenteikura. “These are the symbols I usually use to aim a long-range cannon shot.”

“How're you doing that?” Apacci questions you, eyeing the marks you've left with great interest.

Maybe that's the key? You spend a few minutes teaching Apacci how to use her own reiatsu to summon ink as if writing with a calligraphy brush, and she quickly gets the hang of duplicating the characters she needs in that manner on her own arm.

Finally, after almost an hour of intensive work, Apacci raises her arm and shuts her eyes.

“Reconocer!” she declares as two small tabs brush inky symbols along the length of her arm. You can feel her reiatsu flare as her eyes flick wide open.

“That's incredible!” she exclaims excitedly. “If I focus on you hard enough I can even feel how you're moving!”

“Can you feel anything different about my reiatsu?” you ask.

Apacci shakes her head. “There's something off about you I think, but it's nowhere near as clear as the difference between you and an arrancar.”

“That was a huge development,” you congratulate your pupil with a pat on the back of the head. “You're really something else!”

“Do me a massive favor,” you tell Apacci. “Try and teach everyone else how to do this too, especially Starrk and Halibel. It'll definitely come in handy.”

Apacci does a double take. “Wait, you want me to teach them?”

“I have faith in you.”

“Well then,” she chuckles. “No pressure, right?”

Finally you make it back to the Seireitei, more particularly the underground training room where Ichigo and the others are working towards Bankai. The training has progressed relentlessly without you there, to the point where Yoruichi and Rangiku have been taking it in turns to sleep while the other watches Ichigo. At the moment your wife is asleep, while your daughter stands quietly watching her cousin train with a look of pure boredom on her face.

She brightens up when she sees you.

“Welcome back!” she grins. “Take care of all your errands?”

“And then some. How are things here?”

You already know the answer, feeling differences in Renji and Mirai's reiatsu but not Ichigo's.

“Ichigo's been clashing with Zangetsu since not long after you left,” Rangiku explains for you, “and he's getting sloppy. The exhaustion's setting in. Renji's resting, he first tapped Bankai a few hours ago.”

“And I am almost ready to take the field once more,” Mirai adds, joining you and your daughter on the rocky outcropping overlooking the sea of swords in which Ichigo and his zanpakuto are dueling. You catch sight of something that's not a warclub for a moment as your Commando seals her Bankai: it looked for a moment like a shortbow.

“Seisha Hicchū,” she explains. “I feel like I should let this be a surprise, Captain. I can guarantee you won't be disappointed.”

As Ichigo and Zangetsu clash yet again, oblivious to the fast-approaching date of Rukia's execution, you wonder if you're really any more ready than he is...

Why do I get the feeling that Mirai's Bankai deals True damage, can't be blocked, and pierces any defenses, and the arrowheads are made of Seki Stone?
>>
>>44146842
Not in the slightest. Recall that no zanpakuto has two release stages that are unrelated.

Gin's sword was pretty damn fine as-was. It's Aizen's sword where there's room to play.

>Why do I get the feeling that Mirai's Bankai deals True damage, can't be blocked, and pierces any defenses, and the arrowheads are made of Seki Stone?
because that was the weapon that killed our sword back when she was still a god and Queen already said he looked forward to screw with canon.

Will Seisha Hicchū be like Pinaka the bow of Shiva?
>>
>>44146897
The name is taken from the phrase common in Kyudo describing the mindset behind archery, so any resemblance to a legendary weapon is coincidental. As for its abilities, seki stone arrowheads should be obvious based on the weapon's shikai form. There is however a little more to it than that, which makes it really worth calling a "Bankai".

Hmm. It was a sekki-stone arrowhead that killed Tamamo-no-mae. That's probably just a coincidence, but it's probably going to be an unpleasant association for Riku/Tenkotsuki.
