Previously, our young protagonist returned to her hometown, finding little difference at the surface. Soon, however, she realized the feud between the two royal factions had grown out of control. The house of the Red Queen was poised to overthrow the house of the Black Queen, turning the kingdom into a machine of war. After discovering a way to potentially cure Mona of her demonic curse, as well as meeting the true heirs to the throne, our protagonist agrees to infiltrate the castle of the Black house, and retrieve the best one remaining relic that may sway the people to the side of Ortho and Esmeralda.
>>
The warrior monks aid you by applying an ancient, far-eastern healing technique, strengthening your body until you feel good as new despite your remaining wounds. They also outfit you with a new set of clothes wovendors of silk, leather, and soft cotton. The colors are deep red and yellow, save for the leathers that guard your soft bits, which are dark and rich brown. They also drape you in a red cloak, which bears a glamour that will help prevent you being spotted so long as no person looks directly at you. Finally, they outfit you with a set of finely crafted throwing stars, and a dagger to be concealed in the small of your back.

You state at yourself in a standing mirror set for you after the fitting. The handmaid has gone, leaving you alone with Mona. You feel less like a Ranger now, devoid of your green, but this is as close an approximation as you can expect from the monks. You also notice that the ensemble makes your hips look fairly good.

You turn to Mona.

"I think I should go with you."

Mona slides off of the table she has been warming with her seat, and dusts herself off.

"I was reading some history books while you were being healed. This catalyst they want is strange. It predates the kingdom, but it's never been used for anything. The Dragon slayer king and his original companions kept it around, and declared it a treasure of the same value as their relic weapons, but other than that it's pretty vague what the thing actually does."

The two of you leave the fitting room and head back toward the temple entrance. There, Ortho and Esmeralda are already waiting. Ortho is dressed much the same as you last saw him, but Esmeralda wears an outfit of silk and leather, and carries a shortsword at her side. She seems to be shaking. As you approach, she shuffles forward and bows politely.

"I see you are prepared. I too, have readied myself for our expedition. P-please lead on."

She flinches slightly.

"Ah! Y-yes of course. I'll lead then. Farewell cousin." She and Ortho bow, and the three of you depart from the temple.

You travel through town, walking the winding paths of the markets and thoroughfares before reaching the nobles district. The buildings here truly tower over the rest, with intricate stonework and ostentatious decoration. There are guards posted about, but your clothes are fine enough that they give you no trouble. Eventually, you reach the crest of a hill and the Manor of the Black house. The gates are shut and chained heavily.

"We'll need to go around the side. There's a cracked in the wall we can squeeze through a ways away."

It takes some doing, but you all make it, and begin moving across the unkempt lawn toward the side of the manor. Esmeralda brings you to a wall covered in vines, leading up to a window.

"That's my old room. My father passed when I was young so...er, sorry. You don't care about that. Anyway, if we can make it up these vines, the window should be unlocked still." You prepare to climb, when Mona speaks up.

"I don't think I can make it. Maybe I can find something on the first floor."

"We can't wait around. If someone noticed us, the church may already be on their way."

"Huh? Oh! Um, well, my father was killed in an accideny. Rather, he lost his arm and succumbed. My mother was stricken with grief, and so my uncle, the previous monarch, took me in. He tried to groom me into a bride, but I was... rebellious. Maybe if I'd done what he said, things would have turned out better. Um, thank you, by the way. For asking. I'm actually surprised that- ugh! Nevermind we don't have time!" Esmeralda shakes her head to clear the fog and dashes around the side of the house. You and Mona follow.

After a few minutes, you do find a kitchen window that you can jimmy open. Mona stumbles through with a little help, and you are all inside shortly thereafter.

The manor is dead silent, filled with dust and the smell of mildew. Even so, it stands as the finest home you've ever been present in. You think you might become terribly lost without Esmeralda to guide you, but thanks to her you find the previous kings study quickly, and begin searching.

You tune your senses, searching for a draft, an odd creak of the floorboards, or even an inappropriate echo.

"Found it." Mona points to the mantle above the hearth, where a small vial of white, luminescent liquid sits, between a ship in a bottle and a framed gold coin. She reaches out and snatches it up, then you see her eyes widen.

"Good job, Mona. Give it here, and let's begone from here." Esmeralda reaches out a hand, but Mona does not comply.

"Knights."

"Ahh! Oh we're going to die! No no no no! Please no, I'm not ready!" Esmeraldas legs shake, and she falls to the floor, hugging herself. She continues to mumble to herself as the men searching the house begin kicking in doora and turning over objects all throughout the house. It's only a matter of time before they arrive.

"So are we leaving her here?" Mona gestures to Esmeralda, who seems to be apologizing to the air as she rocks back and forth.

Esmeralda looks up at you, and seems to recover some of her willpower. You help her up, and the three of you make for her bedroom.

It is a small, rather elegantly decorated room, featuring a wardrobe and a single bed. Esmeralda tramps mud and grass across the fine, downy covers as she throws open the window. Without a word, she leaps out, clumsily rolling as she hits the ground.

Outside, and a safe distance away, the three of you catch your breath. Esmeralda spots a wellpump, and wanders over for a drink, and Mona seizes the moment to pull you aside.

"It's perfect for what we need." You realize then, that despite Mona's dead eyes, it's as though she is pressuring you. Like some thing within her is ravenously desperate for the soul within the tiny bottle.

As you walk, you confess to Esmeralda the truth of the catalyst. At first, she thinks you're joking, but with some effort you convince her of your sincerity. She finds the news troubling.

"That our ancestor would trap a human soul like that betrays much of what we know about him. The records always paint him as a kind man, full of joy and generosity. A loving father and a stoic leader of men."

This comforts Esmeralda a bit. The rest of the walk is relatively uneventful, but as you reach the top of the stone temple steps and breach the doors, you are greeted by an enthusiastic Ortho.

"You've returned! I had every confidence! Have you the catalyst?"

You explain everything to Ortho as you did Esmeralda. He too is troubled, but his resolve is unshaken.

"My ancestor was a good man. A great man. Of this I have no doubt. He must have known a day when this soul was needed might come. We will use it to maintain peace and order in the land he made his own. I cannot think of a worthing cause. Give me the soul, we must prepare immediately."

As I've explained, this is the only artifact of which we are aware that is not in the custody of the church. The sword First Light, the blade Windfury, the axe Black Beast, all under tight guard. None of the kings companions have left recoRd of their relics either. This catalyst is our only chance. With it, we can perform a ritual that will sway the people. I've been reading, and there exists a rite that is meant to alter weather. If we can bend the skies to our will, even a little, say with a rainstorm, then drawing some silly fake sword will look like a sad man's desperate gambit. Please, give it to me, before they come to take it back!"

Esmeralda steps forward, shaking.

"Cousin, please, listen to her, she may be able to-"

"I won't hear another word against me! I am heir to this kingdom, and I wI'll protect it from warmongers and fools all the same!"

You berate Ortho for his behavior. You can see as the anger in him comes to a boil. Finally he shuts his eyes, turns away from you, and sighs.

"I've had enough."

With a snap of his fingers, you feel arms wrap around you, and suddenly the three of you are grappled by warrior monks. One of them reaches a hand into Mona's bodice and retrieves the soul, tossing it to Ortho. He catches it and examines it for a moment before looking back to you and the others.

"You won't be harmed. The monks will escort you to the prisoners quarters. You'll be free to go as soon as the ritual is done. And cousin," Ortho looks to Esmeralda. Her expression is that of a child who has lost its pet. "I am disappointed in you. What would my father say."

With that, you are dragged away through the wooden halls of the temple. Around corners and across walkways you are forcibly dragged, barely able to even struggle against the monks expert technique. When at last they release you, you are thrown into a cell. The door, made from simple paper, is slammed shut, and locked.

You observe the room. The walls all seem quite thin, but nearly every inch is plastered with paper talismans with strange eastern script painted onto them. There are no windows, but you do have a bedroll each. Mona is adjusting her bodice, and Esmeralda is staring at te ground, stunned.

"Ancient seals. I saw them in one of the old man's texts before. They make it so the cell can be made of frozen spit and butterfly dreams, and still remain impenetrable. I already tried burning the walls too, so we can assume at least a good number of them are anti-magic."

I don't blame him, considering how the other nobles merely rolled over and let the church go this far. Don't hold it against him please." Esmeralda has a faint smile, but it fades into a look of nostalgic melancholy. The three of you sit and think for a while before Esmeralda speaks again.

"I can read the script. Or, some of it. Tearing them off at random will take hours, but if we can determine the right ones, we might be able to escape. Tell me thiugh, what will you do if I help us free ourselves?"

"My lady. His majesty wishes to see you. He requires your abilities to complete the ritual." You look over to Esmeralda, and watch as she stands and crosses the room, not once meeting your gaze. She is nearly at the door when she turns back to you, and then away again, as if in disappointment.

With a wave of her hand, the soul within Mona sweeps aside a pile of refuse, and three skeletal rats come scurrying out. They circle Mona's feet, standing and twirling as if trained. "Precious things." Monas fist clenches, and the rats turn to dust, and blow away.

"At any rate, miss, I surely will be sad to finally be removed from this coil. But perhaps I will have another grand journey. Such is life. And death."

Why was he imprisoned in the jar?
What does he remember of the old king and his companions?
Does he know of any secrets that we could make us of?

"Miss I assure you, my story has long since concluded. I was orphaned as a boy by babdits, and to claim my revenge I studied the forbidden. Over time I learned more and more about the nature of mortality and the soul, until one day I met the man who founded this land. Regal he was, with a large heart. Took two wives just to satisfy his affections! But, in all truth, my last action as a man was to burn most of my essence to forge the axe he used to slay that awful dragon. Since then, I've merely watched as kings came and went. It's been quiet, but not dissatisfying."

You ask him for advise on the current situation.

"Hm. That is a pickle, miss. We're I you, I would think bolstering your strength. More of that scrumptious blood should put you on part with those Paladins. Other than that, make good use of this girl, as well as her assets, hoho. There is also one more thing you might try. I can sense the presence of sirs blood. There is one who still carries the burning blood of Miss Anna lose herself. They will be a useful tool. Oh, and of course, studying the ways of others is always a good way to expand your mind."

Mona begins to shiver.

"Oh my, it seems she's returning even faster than I'd anticipated. We haven't much time."

"I should think so, miss, so long as she allows me to go. Souls can be terribly clingy. If she for some reason refuses to part with me, mayhap we will meet again. Now, as I am about to lose my hold on her and plummet to the ground, I would advise extending your arms."

You do so, and as Mona's body goes suddenly limp, she falls into your arms. Her eyes remain closed for a short while, then open dreamily. She looks up at you, and you can see her turning red.

"H-hi. I can feel it now. That word. The L word. Sorry I caused so much trouble. We should probably get going, but... can we stay like this a little while longer? And can we maybe, yknow...like the tent?"
