You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

Yesterday, you had just done an AWESOME job kicking the shit out of more Abyssals together with your sisters, White Plains, and San Diego. And well, you guess Portland helped, too. Either way, you had managed to catch one of the Abyssal Wo-class carriers alive, which the higher ups, more specifically, Vahlen, were VERY happy about. You and your sisters then spent all last night binging on ice cream, and learning what "brainfreeze" was the hard way.

Now it was the next morning, and you were back at Mulberry's for breakfast. Your sisters were here of course as well. Portland was off probably trying to impress the Admiral in some way, and White Plains was off doing drills with the other carriers. Busy ships, they were.

However, San Diego seemed to have the time to hang out with you, as she carefully sipped a cup of coffee while you were busy wolfing down a plate of pancakes. Also kind of in an unspoken contest with Johnston and Heerman over who could eat more. You bet you were making a huge ruckus, with all of you stuffing pancakes mouths as fast as humanly possible, your forks and knives clanking loudly against the ceramic plates. You reckon you were each at about eight pancakes consumed now.

"While I do appreciate how much you enjoy my pancakes, perhaps some moderation would be beneficial to you?" Mulberry gives a cheerful, yet concerned smile.

"It's their first time, let them have their fun." San Diego laughs softly.

Your eyes dart from side to side, making eye contact with your sisters.

"NEVER." Is what you intended to say, but it comes out muffled and garbled, obviously because your mouth was still full of fluffy pancake and you were still actively shoving more in.

"Hmmm, should we call the paramedics just in case?" San Diego asks as she observes the impromptu contest.

"Oh, I don't want to bother them again." Mulberry shakes her head. "Let's just see how this turns out."

Heerman is the first to fall, calling it quits after just two more pancakes. She shakes her head as she pushes her plate away in defeat. Unfortunately, your victory is only temporary, as you can only get through four more pancakes before your stomach threatens to revolt on you. With a groan, you drop your fork and knife on the table and lean back on your chair to relieve the pressure on your suddenly bloated stomach.

Not one to to settle for just winning, Johnston decides to rub it in by eating fucking EIGHT pancakes, finishing off her current plate. She stands up and thrusts her arms in the air in victory.

"Ha ha! I'm the winner!" She cheers before there's a large growl, that doesn't come from her stomach. You notice her face turn a shade of green and the smile immediately melts away when Johnston's human half shows its displeasure at how it's been treated.

"Oh, I think I'm gonna be sick." Johnston stumbles and is caught by Heerman.

"I guess I'll take her to the infirmary." Heerman sighs. "I think I'm done, anyways."

"Ha! Serves you right!" You cackle as you stick your tongue at Johnston.

Johnston doesn't verbally respond, but she does give you a single finger salute in response before being dragged off by Heerman.

"Such a shame." Mulberry shakes her head and turns to you. "Oh, Hoel, would we mind helping me clear the dishes today? I hate to ask but it looks like Shen's co-opted my regular help today..."

Huh, now that you mention it, you notice there were a lot fewer faeries milling around today.

"Sure, I can help out." You shrug.

"Excellent!" Mulberry hands you a bundle of cloth, which you realize is an apron. "Here, this will help! Just collect all the plates and put them in the sink in the back!"

"Sure thing." You nod, wincing a bit at your full stomach. You tie on the apron, the move seeming almost natural to you. You did used to carry a galley on you, after all.

"Hm, you look rather cute in that." San Diego muses.

"You hitting on me?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Just making an observation." San Diego says sweetly.

By this point, the rush hour for breakfast had long passed, and the cafe was now largely empty with most of the shipgirls either leaving for missions or other duties. Your task force had been given a day off to recover, which is why you could afford to mess around. You collect all of the discarded and dirty plates and efficiently shuttle them back to the kitchen, where you see a small team of faeries attempting to clean them.

"You need help?" You ask the little fae creatures. They glance up to you and shake their heads rapidly.

"Hoel, be a dear and grab a cloth to polish down the bar?" Mulberry calls from the main room.

You follow her instructions and grab a cleaning towel, only to return to the front to see San Francisco sitting at the bar.

"I apologize for the mess." Mulberry says apologetically. I've been a bit shorthanded today."

"Don't worry." San Fran grunts as Mulberry slides a plate of pancakes in front of her. She takes a bite and works it in her mouth a bit. "Hmmmm, something seems missing. Ah, I got it."

San Fran then pulls a hip flask from her belt, unscrews the cap, and douses the pancakes in alcohol as you would with maple syrup.

Meanwhile, you notice San Diego shooting a wary eye at San Fran.

Whiskey was not exactly the first thing that came to mind when it came to pancake toppings, but you guess you weren't in any position to judge. You decide to stay quiet as San Fran continues to indulge in her blatant alcoholism. Was her war experience really that bad?

Fortunately for you, it's Mulberry that has the courage to speak out.

"Fran, I really think you should moderate your drinking." Mulberry sighs in exasperation. "Especially in front of the other ships."

"I'm an adult. I can make my own decisions." San Fran grunts as she finishes the first pancake. She picks up her hip flask again, tries to judge its weight, and sets it down on the counter with a loud CLANK. "I'm gonna need a refill on this, too. The good stuff, not the off the shelf crap you get at Walmart."

Mulberry gives a sad sigh, but picks up the flask with her pale hands and heads for the back, her shoes clicking against the tile. Honestly, you think that at some times, Mulberry was TOO nice. How does she put up with this kind of behavior?

"So, I heard did well today. Captured a Wo-class, right?" Fran grumbles as she cuts apart her second pancake.

"That's right." You nod warily, wondering where San Fran was going with this. "You impressed?"

"A bit." San Fran shrugs. "Caught a lot of eyes with that move. Just a word of warning, kid, but some of those eyes aren't the kind you want watching you."

But I do have the general idea for Gullinbursti being a sort of a non-abyssal counterpart to A̷͡b҉̵̶̢̀y͘҉̨́s̀́͠s̴a̶͢l̴̴̸̨ ̸̢̛́͟A̕͝i̸̛͘g͏a̵̴͜i͠҉͝͞o̡͞͏̨n͏́͜.

"What kind of eyes are we talking about here?" You ask suspiciously.

"The kind eyes that would like to put you in situations that will get you killed." San Fran sighs as she finishes off her second pancakes. "There's the Abyssals, too. The bigwigs in DC like to pretend they're all mindless animals, but they just don't want to admit what they really suspect. The Abyssals know you're a threat to them now, and they'll be coming for you."

"Speaking from personal experience?" You frown.

"Kid, you don't even want to the know the first thing about my 'personal experience.'" San Fran laughs bitterly.

"Speaking of personal experience." San Diego finally speaks up, with just a hint of venom in her voice. "Atlanta's been asking me why you haven't been answering her calls or messages."

You see San Fran visibly wince, as if just uttering Atlanta's name caused her physical pain.

"I'll get around to it." She mumbles quietly.

"I'm sure you will." San Diego continues to glare daggers at San Fran.

Okaaaaay, this was starting to get way too hot even for you. You quietly shuffle you way back into the kitchen, where you notice all of the faeries that had previously been working were now gathering at the door to observe the vicious one on one combat between San Fran and San Diego. You guess in Mulberry's absence, even the faeries would get a bit unruly.

However, the familiar clicking of Mulberry's shoes provides ample warning for the faeries to scramble and return to their posts.

"Oh dear, are Fran and San Diego at it again?" Mulberry sighs sadly.

"Yep." You nod. "Doing, uh, whatever it is they do."

"Ah well, I suppose I should go sort this out then." Mulberry takes a deep breath. "You should run along. I'm sure you have many other things to do."

"What exactly is their deal, anyways?" You whisper, nodding to the two cruisers, who were still wordlessly glaring at each other.

"Oh dear, well, I don't like gossiping about other ships but..." Mulberry shakes her head. "You see, back in the War, Fran had a... friendly fire incident."

Now the gears start clicking in your head and the puzzle pieces came together.

"San Fran shot Atlanta?" You gasp.

"Worse than that." Mulberry bites her lip ever so slightly. "She caused rather severe damage to Atlanta, arguably enough to cause her sinking."

Well shit. No wonder San Diego seemed so salty about it, being one of Atlanta's sisters.

"Jeez, how do you fuck up that bad?" You wince.

"You have to understand." Mulberry frowns at you in disapproval. "From what Portland and other ships have told me, Guadalcanal was not a particularly pleasant experience, especially the night fighting. It was dark, noisy, and ships were being hit and sunk all over. It would be very easy to mistake one ship for being another."

"Well, when you put it that way..." You slightly regret being so judgmental. "So where's Atlanta now."

"Oh dear, another unpleasant experience." Mulberry's frown deepens. "Contrary to what most of us believed, Atlanta doesn't actually hold any ill will towards Fran. It was an accident, after all. But Fran, well, I don't think she feels she deserves Atlanta's forgiveness. She told Atlanta that she didn't want to be anywhere near her, and Atlanta, being the hopelessly nice and naive girl she is, took those words to heart and transferred herself to the north Pacific."

"Jesus." You wince. "And people just let it slide?"

"Well, what can we do? It's something only Fran herself can solve." Mulberry sighs. "Now I better get this flask back to Fran. If you think she's bad while she's drunk, she's even worse than sober."

You don't even know how that's possible.

"Now run along. I'll handle the rest." Mulberry's smile return as she gently pushes you out the back door and gently shuts it.

Well, what were you gonna do now...

Well, you suppose you should go see whatever happened to that Wo you captured. However, that meant going back to the lab complex, which would never not be damn spooky. At this point, the guards had seen you enough times to recognize you as a shipgirl, and don't even bother stopping you at the front gates. However, what they must have done was send word to Vahlen, as she's already waiting in the lab's front lobby, a giddy smile on her face, no doubt in a good mood due to her new "research material."

"Ah! Hoel!" Vahlen says cheerfully. "How can I help you?"

"Ah well, I was kinda in the neighborhood, and I thought I'd just drop by and take a look at the Wo I helped capture?" You ask with an endearing smile.

"Hmmmmm." Vahlen pauses. "The level we're holding the Wo on has a security clearance far higher than what we would normally grant to visitors..."

You see Vahlen visibly try to resist your cute destroyer wiles, but even she can't quite manage it. You see her shoulders droop, a surefire sign that she's given up the fight.

"All right, I can take you to the specimen, but only for a few minutes." Vahlen says in a half whisper, as if afraid of somebody listening in.

"But don't you run this place?" You ask.

"I do, but there are proper procedures we must all follow." Vahlen huffs. "Any proper scientist should be aware of that."

"Sure, okay." You shrug. It's not like you were a scientist.

"Here." Vahlen pins a blue colored badge onto your shirt. "That should get you past security. We will only be down there for five minutes, not a second more. Is that clear?"

"Crystal." You nod.

"Good. Then follow me." Vahlen says as she marches off down the hall to the elevator. However, this time, instead of punching one of the regular buttons, Vahlen inputs a code on a keypad next to the rows of buttons and then presses her thumb against what seemed to be a kind of scanner. The elevator then rumbles as it rolls down.

"So, I must ask. What is your particular interest in this specimen?" Vahlen asks. You kinda get the feeling she was probing you for information.

"Well, this is the first humanoid Abyssal I've seen." You say innocently.

"Hm, I suppose you're correct. There is still so much about the Abyssals we do not know." Vahlen nods. "What I am particularly interested in is seeing how physiologically similar they are to shipgirls, something I could never quite achieve with deceased specimens."

"And you know, there's something about it aht just feels so...familiar." You mumble, unsure of how to word it better.

"Interesting." Vahlen nods, apparently noting down your answer.

"And that cane looks really classy, and I was wondering if I could keep one." You add.

This causes Vahlen to laugh.

"Well, we do have four of them, so I do suppose we can spare one." She chuckles. However, the conversation is interrupted when elevator doors open with a DING.

And on the other end you see what has to be an entire squad of the most heavily armed men you have ever seen. Like the rest of the lab, they're dressed in extremely bright white armor, but they were carrying rather heavy weaponry. You weren't sure if they were there to keep the Wo in people out. Maybe a little of both. They all glare at you as the doors open, but Vahlen steps forward and they all immediately return to their posts.

"As I said, five minutes." Vahlen says to you before nodding to a large observation window.

You step up to it and see the Wo, strapped down to bed by what looked to be extremely thick metal clamps. Her "hat" was still on, its spindly mini arms also tried down and restrained. The two small turrets on either side were missing, mostly likely physically removed, and the two ports that would normally eject its fighters were welded over with steel plate, The Wo itself was blindfolded and gagged. However, what was the most disturbing as just the amount of tubes, needles, and an assortment of over medical tools and probes stuck in its body. Screens of data surrounded the room, as scientists in full biohazard suits carefully monitored them.

"Well, what do you think?" Vahlen asks, clearly proud of her work.

"Is this all really necessary?" You frown, a bit uncomfortable at the sight.

"Well, of course." Vahlen says matter of factly. "Abyssals are at least as physically strong as shipgirls, so it's a necessity to keep them restrained at all times."

"And all that medical shit in her?" You continue.

"As I said, we're studying its physiology." Vahlen explains. "We can't do that without the proper medical equipment. This is all nothing you wouldn't see in any hospital today."

"But is this right?" You finally get to the meat of the issue.

"There is no right and wrong." Vahlen shakes her head. "Abyssals are not considered human under any sort of international or legal standard. They don't even count as animals. Even more, they're hostile to humans and therefore an enemy. We're simply taking the most efficient method to gather data."

"And what are you going to it after all the data is collected?"

"Well, we'll most likely keep it in captivity for long term study. Otherwise we'll terminate for safety reasons."

"What you're doing is sick." You spit. "It's not right at all. How about us? Are considered 'human' to you? What sets us apart from the Abyssals?"

"Well, first of all, the fact that you can actually communicate with us, can demonstrate that you are self aware, are generally physiologically human, have complex emotions, and aren't instinctively wired to kill every living thing you come across, just to start." Vahlen sighs. "I'm honestly disappointed in you, Hoel. Did you honestly think we didn't try testing it for intelligence? It apparently is incapable or unwilling to communicate, and has refused all forms of sustenance we attempted to give it. We were forced to intravenously feed it nutrients because we fear it will starve to death. Not to mention the numerous casualties we suffered just trying to restrain it."

You're about to say something else when Vahlen cuts you off with a wave of her hand.

"I believe your five minutes are up, Hoel. The guards will escort you out. Have a nice day." Vahlen says coldly.

Two of the big, heavily armed guards step up behind you, fingers on the trigger of their weapons. You had half a mind to manifest your rig and just wreak havoc on them, but you decide now was not the time. You silently shove you way past them and step into the elevator. "All right let's the hell out of here, then."

The elevator ride back up to ground level is silent and awkward, and feels far longer than the trip down. Finally, the elevator reaches the surface, and the guards continue to escort you all the way to the front gate.

"Just to let you know, my family was Guam when the Abyssals. Not much of them left." One of the guards growls as he gives you a rough shove out of the gate. You stumble forward just as the gate slams closed behind you.

Assholes.

Now you were in a really foul mood. Fucking Vahlen acting all high and mighty like that. Time to find something or someone to get your spirits back up.

Well, maybe Anna's chipper attitude can help you get your spirits back up. You take out your newly issued cell phone, which you were still sorta trying to figure out. Fortunately, Anna's number was already stored on it so all you needed to do was hit one button to start the call.

"Oh, Hoel! What's up?" Anna's cheerful voice chirps.

"Hey Anna, I was just wondering, er, if you have time to hang out now?" You ask a bit awkwardly. You were still getting used to this whole social thing. "I mean, if you're not busy or anything."

"Oh no, it's fine! I'm over at the harbor. I'll turn on my GPS beacon so you can find me!"

Suddenly, your head kinda hums as you pick up a signal emanating a few hundred meters away, towards the shore. You follow the signal, weaving through other shipgirls and base personnel and buildings before you reach what looks to be some sort of observation point atop a bluff overlooking Pearl Harbor below.

And there you see Anna sitting on a bench, here headphones on over her crimson red hair.. She looks like she's in her own tiny little world, oblivious to everything.

I honestly wonder why anons choose the "This is sick" answer. Is it for the morals? The Abyssals don't seem to have any morals of their own and are perfectly content at killing everything. As for us we can limit ourselves in keeping humanity as a race alive or do our best to win, have it be fighting them or learning how they tick. It might end up with Wo here getting cut up, but they didn't let the humans inverse survive did they?

She doesn't even realize you're there. Not until you snatch the headphones and yank them off of her head.

"W-wawawawhaaaat?!" Anna's head darts around trying to figure out what happened to her headphones until she turns around and sees you. "Hoel! That's not funny! Give them baaaaaack!"

"Then you gotta get them back!" You chortle as you hold them over her head.

"G-gimme!" Anna makes a swipe for them, but you back away just in time. Unfortunately, Anna's momentum causes her to fall over the back of the bench.

"Oh shit, you okay, Anna?" You ask.

"Y-yeah. Owowowow." Anna winces as she dusts herself off. "Come on, give my headphones baaaaaack!"

"Sure sure, just a second." You say as you put the headphones on, just to hear what she's listening to.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80Ngl2RY8sA

"What the hell am I listening to?" You blink. Whatever this audio was, it was positively alien sounding.

"O-oh, it's recorded sounds of Uranus!" Anna explains.

"This is what my butt sounds like?" You look at Anna, mortified. "WAIT A MINUTE, DID YOU RECORD WHAT MY BUTT SOUNDS LIKE?!"

"N-n-n-no!" Anna wails, her face turning as red as her hair and she begins fidgeting uncontrollably. "I-I-I meant Uranus the planet! N-not your butt! Th-though th-that's not to say that I-I don't like your butt or a-anything! OhmgoshwhatamIsaying..."

"Oho, you like my butt?" You say seductively as you grasp the hem of your skirt between you fingers and lift it up ever so slightly. You of course don't show everything, but just enough. "Wanna see what it feels like~?"

Anna's face somehow becomes even redder as her internal components catastrophically overheat. You sear you can see smoke billowing out of her ears as she just completely breaks down in a gibbering mess, incapable of uttering even a single coherent word. Her jaw just opens and closes repeatedly like a goldfish.

"Anna?" You step forward and wave your hand in front of her face to try and get her attention. "Anna, can you hear me? It was just a joke, girl, come on!"

No response. Anna was completely broken down.

I have the most bizarre feeling that, down the line, an Abyssal is gonna start talking to us in the field, at which point even if she tries to kill us we can still go rub the recording into Vahlen's Nazi face.
>>
>>44125264
That's if humanity ever creates a recording device proof against our recklessness.
>>
>>44125264
Well it's either that, or we decide to go rogue in an attempt to find out the truth.
>>
>>44125282

They have those skycams, presumably with audio, and if not then they'll have video of an Abyssal standing there with it's mouth moving and without it trying to kill us for a period of time greater than 0 seconds, which'd in and of itself blow the "they've always constantly attacked us" thing out of the water.
>>
>>44125355
>which'd in and of itself blow the "they've always constantly attacked us" thing out of the water.
It'll just prove that something about Hoel caused them to attempt communication.
That they've always constantly attacked and never taken prisoners, accepted surrenders, or spared civilians is a proven fact.
>>
>>44125366

>something caused them to attempt communication

Which means they CAN be communicated with. Which means they're INTELLIGENT. Which means they aren't just mindless killing machines that one can strap to a table and "harvest" like Vahlen's been doing.

It might not change the situation or the activities, but hopefully it'll give the cunt some nightmares about the pain she's inflicted on intelligent living creatures.
>>
>>44125264

So what? We're gonna plan some sort of "Great Escape" if we find out that some higher forms of Abyssals are more intelligent than other?
>>
>>44125422
>Which means they CAN be communicated with.
Which they have refused to do so at every single opportunity, even to the point of choosing suicide by starvation instead of cooperating.

Quite frankly, no one will give a shit because the Abyssals are bent on the complete extermination of all humans they can target.
>>
>>44125422
>give the cunt some nightmares about the pain she's inflicted on intelligent living creatures.
The abyssals don't seem to give a shit about all of the humans they've torn apart alive.
So they're intelligent AND they go about killing and chewing up every single other living intelligent creature that's not an abyssal; I don't think they have any nightmares about that.
>>
>>44124633
>>44124701
Just wait until we see the higher Abyssals. Then we see genuine assholes and crazed fucks who really, really like inflicting pain.
