Slithering through the gateway, you move with purpose in hopes of finding Veles. Passing through the rookery, you suffer Daisy's attention, letting the young hawk down on her roost as you exit. Heading down through the tunnels, you find the old lamia in the main antechamber. Arm still in his improvised sling, Veles looks up from the deer that he's awkwardly butchering. You see him wince as he reflexively tries to grab one of the animals legs to gets better access with the small but wicked looking dagger in his hand. Instead the snake opts to crook the hind leg between neck and shoulder, cutting more by feel than by sight as he attempt to skin the animal.

You cough politely and the giant snake promptly disengages himself with the animal, dipping a bloody hand in a container of water.

<Apologies Sasha.> He starts, <The claws of our kind take some time to regrow, and I am loathe try and swallow this whole. Antlers aside, fur never was that palatable.>

<No apologies needed. Is that giving you trouble?>

<Better part of a century since I've lost a claw. Longer still since one wasn't a clean break. Just forgotten how much of a bother it was.> He responds dismissively.

>I actually could use some advice.

<Why not Both?>
>>
<Need a hand?> You ask, moving to the opposite side of the deer.

<It's messy work.> Veles protests as you grab the knife from him.

<Nothing I've not done before. Besides I have some questions for you.> You say, before going to work on the animal. <You've had a bit of time to talk to the Nitor and the other mages, right? What's your take on the Phoenix Empire?>

<The lands to the far east? Nothing I could say for certainty. Were it the times of my sire, I'd say they were under the domain of a Roc, especially given the pomp, vanity, and adherence to some unspoken code that shifts with public opinion. That said, I imagine it is more of a learned behavior. Your Phoenix cook seems to be more in line with your culture than what I've heard of the Phoenix folk.>

<So its a society thing?> You ask, running the blade along the inside of the animals rear leg, before peeling the skin back.

<Indeed. If it were a matter of breeding, I would imagine it would be more pronounced in someone of high breeding like Tai.>

You pause. <High breeding?>

<Aristocracy, something of that sort. Not sure the word.> He gestures over towards a book pile near his shelves. <Those scholars that spoke to me were more than happy to exchange much of their written history for answering their questions. They've been leaving a package containing volumes on various things with the workmen every other week now. I can't imagine how they churn them out.>

<Printing press. It can print books quite fast. Now what was that about aristocracy?> You say, keeping the old snake on topic.

<Oh, right. Right. There's one book, its about notable members of the Phoenix Court and the author styled themselves something of an expert on facial features. Claims there are certain characteristics that are inherent to pheonix nobility. Matches up with that Tai fellow quite well.>

>File that away, keep questioning on the pheonix

You make a mental note of that revelation, but decide to not press that particular point. <What about the Phoenix themselves. Liama translated a note of theirs. The group attacking is looking for something. An L and a T is their word of it. Code I imagine.>

<How did they say it? Context is of importance when it comes to codes.>

You recite the line from memory. <'The divination suggest that L is located somewhere near the mountains. T is located beyond. The signs of T are faint, and the chances of it being usable are not high. L is nowhere in sight, but the presence of 3 S suggests it being nearby. Interrogation of M after retrieval was inconclusive. K requires more divination supplies. Solve this and remove the S from the equation.' Thats the phrase it is referring to.>

Veles sits there for a while pondering the statement. In the meantime you finish removing the skin from the animal, draping it down over the table to provide something approaching a proper surface to work on as you continue to break down the deer. You're just about done with Veles speaks up.

<Leviathan. Troll.>

<Pardon?>

<L and T. They are looking for Tanak and Casimir.>

What could they do with them and why are they looking for them? Any possibilities of them actually waking the leviathan up?
>>
>>44064967
Ask if S could be refering to the lamia? like Snakes? the three being us him and liama

"Any idea how they might try to find them? I didn't think they had survived until the present age. Is there something remaining of them that the Phoenix might seek?"

<Then S could be refering to the lamia? like Snakes?>

<That is only what it could mean. We are tied with their "L" for we are are born of leviathan and dragon.>

You have a slew of questions, but you pace yourself, focusing on the animal rather than the revelation.

<What could they do with them and why are they looking for them?>

<Why? I do not know, you would have to ask them. As for what they could do... well the great beasts are called such because they have great power. They were one of the shapers of the world. I can only imagine the lure of power is what they are after.> He says cautiously.

<Any possibilities of them actually waking the leviathan up?>

He shrugs. <If they do it would be the last thing they'd ever do. Tanak rising would destroy the continent from here to the western coast. These mountains are his roof. I can only imagine what would happen should he rise.>

<Any idea how they might try to find them? I didn't think they had survived until the present age. Is there something remaining of them that the Phoenix might seek?>>

<As I said, Tanak is dormant. They would have to dig far and deep to so much as catch a glimpse of the leviathan. As for Casimir. The is long dead killing that which begot the 'advisors' as they are so called. His bones surely remain, but if they want that they would have to travel into the heart of the wastelands. What lies there, I cannot say. The degenerate trolls there are known to get so thick that even the group we came across would seem miniscule.> He says, gingerly rubbing his injured hand.

<What could be done with the bones of a dead troll?>

<I would not know the specifics. Grant power. Impart the traits of the great beasts? Create something mayhaps? I know not.>

<And waking up a leviathan, what would that need?>

<If I'd hazard a guess. either a physical or mental stimulus great enough to rouse it from its slumber. It'd have to penetrate the earthen cocoon they rest in, which is nigh impenetrable in the first place. Nothing of either sort I have ever heard of done. So I know not what or how one could do it.>

He seems at a loss on ideas either way, so you decide to change the subject.

<What of magic, I am still keen to learn more.> You say, setting the blade down and rinsing your hands in his washbasin.

He smiles. <Now that is something I can definitely assist with. You have already shown a great aptitude for the destructive side of magic. Our birthright makes that come easy. Now, while focusing on the magic of our bloodline is relatively simple, they don't necessarily synergize well. It takes a great deal of concentration for one of Leviathan and Dragon stock to focus on both our bodies natural aptitudes and burning something at the same time. One could however focus on studies from each bloodline, supplementing their natural talents with those that do not come as naturally but work better in tandem. My sire created three seperate category for these. Offensive. Defensive. Utility. They contain elements from Draconic, Leviathan, Roc, Troll, and elemental magic designed to work well together. That said, some find it better to focus on their birthright, learning to use what comes naturally the best. Or you could do as I did, and dabble a little in everything. It is far slower than anything else but... well time is something I have an abundance of.>

<A little of everything then. No sense overspecializing. Especially since I don't quite have a grasp on everything yet.>

He nods, <Understandable. That said I am not quite certain what you would like to learn. Most of what I know is through personal experimentation. Teaching something like that to someone else is fairly challenging.>

<So what do you propose we do?>

<You could stay here for some time. Try and observe. I'll do my damnest to showcase what I have at my disposal. I have the reagents handy. Mayhaps try and find something that grabs your interest.>

<I suppose you want something in return for this. Hardly a fair deal making me use your supplies.>

He grins. <Resupply of rare reagents mayhaps. Or maybe a favor to be disclosed at a later date. I must say I am interested your UFK's mainland. So much has changed, that it would be like a whole new land to me.>

>Yes/No?

(Will take the response into account for the next thread. No sense running this into tomorrow. Will keep going on the weekend perhaps. I'll be housesitting around the holidays, so I'll probably be able to make a marathon of it then if people are amenable to that.>
