"Please! Nila, for the sake of our friendship-!"
"If it is for our friendship and the child we share, I'll gladly let you take some," Nila cuts you off, shaking her head. "But without my strength, they aren't much use. Further, while they can heal, childbirth and pregnancy is something different... It's not just fixing something which is damaged, but rather creating a whole new life. A simple charm like the one you made for Sera might not work."
"Still, I have to try something," you reply quietly. "I won't let my new child die the same way my last did."
"Speaking of which," Nila says, "I'll take the bodies of your dead, if you want me to, but guiding their spirits isn't within my power... Not really."
"Wait- Their spirits?"
Nila blinks. "The part inside you that's 'you'... The part that leaves when you die?"
"I've... Never really heard of anything like that," you respond slowly. You get the feeling what she's just let slip is important.

"Everyone has one," Nila continues. "I'm more spirit than flesh, honestly. It's how Soqed was able to restore himself after you killed him. You humans have weak ones by comparison, but after you die, they still go... Somewhere." She suddenly seems evasive. "But as you entrusted your son to me and I can't take him there, all I could do was..." She waves her hand and out of the water peeps a small otter with a glossy, silver coat and curious eyes. It seems wary of you, but bounds to Nila's side in tiny hops, hiding behind her legs.
"That's-?" you croak, unable to believe your eyes.
"Your son's soul never had a chance to grow," Nila says sadly. "The best I could do is give it a new chance like this."
You kneel down and gently reach out your hand. The otter regards you warily for a moment, then bobs forward and presses his little paws into your fingers. You gently tickle it under the chin, watching it wriggle happily. This is... What became of your son?
>>
>>44046465
"Thank you," you whisper, as the otter jumps away and vanishes into the water with a quiet splash and a ripple.
"He's more spirit than living creature now, like me," Nila explains. "I'm sorry, but he doesn't know you, or Beren or anyone. He's more clever than any otter, but not quite a human and not like me or Soqed." She sighs. "It was the best I could do. If only-" She shakes her head and beckons you to follow her to the base of the waterfall.

Nila carefully inspects the stones, looking for one that's cracked open to show the crystals within. Once she finds one a little smaller than your fist, she holds it to her mouth and gently breathes into it, awakening the crystals and causing them to gently glow. "There," she says, handing it to you. "For the sake of our friendship and my step-son. I hope it's of some use." She hesitates a moment, before letting go, her fingers trailing over yours. "I cannot be of much help to you, but there might be someone who would be," she says, hesitantly, as if each word were precious and difficult to part with. "There's... Other spirits. Other beings like I and Soqed. They're not of the land or beasts, but rather... I've never seen one, but I have felt them. Maybe one of them has the power to ease childbirth? You could try calling to them?"

>>

Well, I originally meant it as "The start of each turn," but I actually like your idea better. Cuts down on the chop-and-change.

The clan's numbers are slowly beginning to swell again. While the timing with winter coming on could be better, the people are at least glad to have a glut of infants to make up for the elders and young that died in the first winter here. The down-side to this however is that your family's hut, however expansive, is becoming significantly more crowded. Such noise and life can be welcome, but you decide the time has come to set up your own family group, distinct from your parents and grandparents. Such an act is relatively momentous, as traditions go among your clan. By creating your own group, you essentially become an honourary elder, in station, if not in the respect given to age. Until you show the grey hair and wrinkles of age, you'll still be treated as probationary, but if you can last that long and more importantly, keep your family safe and fed for that long, you'll have certainly gained the respect of the grandfathers and grandmothers.

Setting up a new tent has become more labour-intensive than simply throwing together a new bivouac however. The supports have to be carved by flint axes and the cover sewn by you, your woman, your children and anyone else that wishes you well, or is part of your new family. That actually raises a very important point. Who will you bring with you? The clan may respect your guidance, but these people will truly follow your words and advice, like children follow their parents.

The more people in your nascent family, the harder it will be to keep everyone in order and accounted for. With that in mind, you only reach out to Elia and Galit to join you. Elia is instantly enthusiastic, but Galit takes a little bit more convincing. Strangely enough, Beren decides to take this upon herself and before you can even find the time to talk to Galit. You find the two of them peacefully talking and stitching together the covering for your new home with bone needles, while Sera pushes a thicker awl through the tough pieces of hide, to make the necessary holes; and Ebba patiently stands by with the sinew threads. Beren looks up as you draw near and smiles.
"There you are, Trym. It's already all taken care of. Galit said she'd be delighted to be a part of our family."
"It was that simple?" you ask in confusion. As far as you were aware, Galit was mostly opposed to the thought, quite unusually, if you had to be honest.
"It was," Beren nods. "I just pointed out a few things and had a pleasant talk." Oh god, those are dangerous words if you ever heard them, but Galit seems content to let it sit.

Finishing your home takes quite some time, but before the summer is done, the frame is up and the cover is finished. It feels quite unusual to suddenly have so much space to yourself, but you soon get used to the relative quiet. Besides, with the clan so closely connected, it's not as if you're isolated. Sera and Ebba still get to play with their cousins and if there is a crisis you can't be expected to deal with alone, your old families are well within shouting range.

The weather is starting to turn colder and the leaves are changing colour as early fall comes. You have managed to run your food reserves out, sadly. You've got no-one to fall back on now (at least in theory) and eyes are upon you to see if you're really capable of guiding your family and the clan. With that in mind and your food running short, you take your spear and return once again to hunting the aurochs. Mesut and his family are pretty much a permanent feature of these hunts now, leading the hunts with skill and expertise and making sure the size of the aurochs herd is maintianed by never taking breeding-age females, or too many adult males. As you help drag back the day's kill, you can't help but marvel at the very idea that you now need to be careful not to kill too many of the herds. A few scant years ago, you and your kin would have had trouble bringing down just a single one of the titanic animals. Apparently, Mesut is thinking the same thing as he flashes you a grin and wordlessly slaps your back. The move to the mouth of the valley has been very kind to his fortunes, at least.

The clan seems mostly contented, but Beren is worrying again. The move took her mind off things, but her pregnancy is nearing its end. You have little time left to act, if you can even influence things at all...

Getting to know the clan better, and sharing with them on how we intend to go through the winter, and try to make sure everyone converted from bivouacs to huts, and that perhaps see if everyone has food to last the winter somehow.

Lets continue to get our food stores up so they last to half or all the spring so that in the winter we can get the plants and in spring we can plant them.

Then in Summer/Late spring we go for another hunt and then try and get a second wife so we have more hands in the Fall to harvest and process the plants.

I was thinking on getting some wolf time in winter after we get the plants done so we can have them as friends at the same time as agriculture.

With this roll we may have enough food to perhaps invite a few who are to old or to young near our huts, in our old bivouacs.

And we would have canine pups as companions for our daughters to play with, and perhaps guards and hunting aids.

Because after agriculture, the next is domesticating goats and aurochs.

I hope the newest child is a boy.
>>
>>44056415
Hunter III?
Dare I hope we upgrade to that so we can have 5d10?
>>
>>44056456
Well, if we want to get the wolftime we should go as the winter starts in early winter so that our offer seems genuine and the wolfs get a longer time to acclimatize around us, and then in late winter go for the roll for plants.

That is if we have enough food for some wolfs. And nice idea on repurposing bivouacs. If we talk about the new conversion to huts, we could also talk about letting a few bivouacs stand, so that we can later invite the wolfs in, should we have enough of a surplus.
>>
>>44056456
I doubt anyone is willing to live in bivouacs after last winter.
>>
>>44056493
But wolfs should find them somewhat better if they have no cave or den. That would be something that wolfs without a pack could be directed towards by Soqed. Bivouacs are better than nothing. And a wolf has good fur, unlike us, who just now got some leather working for more than loincloth and hunting vests, as well as huts.
>>
>>44056506
Or old wolfs and young pups should a pack be prowling for a hunt and have no shelter in the area.

We have the leftover bivouacs that we wont use, so why not offer them to wolfs, as long as they behave in a good fashion and do not attack members of the clan/human pack?

Hunting during the winter isn't something anyone enjoys; it's harder, more miserable and the beasts are lean from hunger. You resolve instead to lay in enough supplies to see your family through into spring ahead of time. Besides, next year, Ebba will genuinely start eating into your reserves, so you may as well enjoy the last of the time when you can reliably provide for your family alone.

The hunt goes well. That's actually an understatement; the hunt goes so unbelievably well that you can scarcely believe the mountain of food the band brings back. There's enough here to not only keep the clan fed through winter, but fed WELL! Mesut (for once absent due to, rumour has it, being in the middle of ALL of his women at once) is angry at seeing how many kills the hunting band has made, grumbling about next year being lean, but for once, he's largely ignored. Everyone is glad to have the excess and it boosts spirits magnificently. Honestly, the only stumble to the spring in your step, comes when Sera innocently asks how you're going to eat it all. Even with smoking, it can only last so long, after all... It'd be a shame to see it all go to waste.

You have enough food to keep your family fed until the end of winter (and fed damn well too).

Due to your luck and skill, you have gained a rank in the 'Hunter' job! I may have to switch it next generation to something more based on frequency of use...

>I may have to switch it next generation to something more based on frequency of use...

I saw we offer a portion to Soqed, or as an offering to a spirit we attempt to summon.

What happens now that we can't provide alone? Do we need to expand our hunting band? Or are we placing our bets on plants?

Just as the first of the winter snow starts to dust across the village, you're awoken in the middle of the night by Beren groaning in pain. You quickly stir the fire into life and kick Elia and Galit awake. Once they've disentangled themselves from one another's entwined arms and legs, you send Elia running for the grandmothers, while Galit tries to soothe Beren, who is clutching at her abdomen and sobbing. You keep Ebba occupied as Sera tries to be useful, running and fetching water, holding a torch over her head to light her way as she sprints back and forth from the river to the village (come to think of it, having to draw from the river is really inconvenient at a time like this).

When the grandmothers arrive, you and Elia are thrown out of the tent to wait with the rest of the men who have been awoken by the commotion. You have just enough time to press the bracelet that kept Sera alive, into Beren's hand, before cuffs to the head and poking, bony fingers accompanied by creaking voices force you out. The grandfathers look at you in sympathy. You have to spend the rest of the night and then into the day, sitting and worrying with the rest of your kin. Elia is the most sympathetic, of course, pacing like a worried animal and jittering whenever he's told to sit down. As it continues past noon, even Mesut looks sympathetic. You can still hear Beren whimpering in pain, in between agonised cries.

Finally, one of the grandmothers comes and lays a hand on your shoulder and nods. You sprint for the tent so fast, Elia is still talking to the space you left when you reach the opening. You duck inside, your face drawn and sunken with worry, to see Beren lying with her eyes closed, Sera wiping sweat from her forehead with a handful of moss. To your relief, her chest still rises and falls.
>>
>>44058374
We could give some to Soqed's pack, and invite them to our former bivouacs, if they want shelter and will not attack clan members or other humans we allow in the clan village.

Plus we could also burn it for Nila and Soqed, what the wolfs will not be able to eat before it should go bad.
>>
>>44058538
I think we should first get the Wolf and the River firmly established with our village and in the friendly and cooperative, partly adopted and honorary clan members level.

That way we have two options who are of relative equal status to any other spirit we would summon.

"You're lucky she lives," sighs the grandmother that followed you, an old crone bent double and even growing a few straggly hairs on her upper lip. "Beren has bad birth-luck, but not the worst."
"Did the child-?" you begin, but you're interrupted by a wailing as Galit wraps a tiny, flailing form in skins. She looks almost as exhausted as Beren, as she hands you the child.
"You've a son at last," she nods, "Let's hope he has the strength the last one lacked." She smiles thinly and shakes her head. "Sorry- Urgh... I'm not even the one who birthed him and I feel exhausted. I don't mean any insult. What will you name him?"

"Noh."
Galit blinks. "Wait, no, you won't name him?"
"No, that's his name. Noh."
Galit gives you the most confused look you've ever seen on her haughty, pretty face. "I'll never understand your sense of humor," she mutters, shaking her head and going in search of Elia.

Thankfully, the bracelet charm around Beren's wrist means she recovers well from her long labour pains well and soon she's utterly inseparable from Noh, although she too just sighs and shakes her head at the name you chose. "You're not allowed to pick the names for children anymore," she says simply, holding your son against her. "Come to that... Is this enough?" She looks up at you, still remembering the pain and struggle of all three of the children you have had by her. A woman who has many children is a blessing to the clan and she knows what is expected of her, but given the past, she is afraid. The question can wait however; her hands will be full with Noh, even with Galit gladly helping in any way she can.

It is now early winter. You have enough food to last your family until spring.

What will you do?

Offer bivouacs to wolfs through Soqed if they do not attack the human clan?

Could be done by joining in a hunt with them and letting them have it as a starter...

Nice save.

What's the plan after taming plants? Taming animals?
>>
>>44061046
Wolves or second wife. Each is potentially dangerous.
>>
>>44061046
I'd say we talk to Soqed about teaming up. Might wanna talk to the clan about this first though. I know at least one other anon supports that
>>
>>44058791
That could take years. They only accepted Nila because we knocked her up while in a human form, and they sort of resent her for the river thing.

Do this, with the offering of the extra meat we can't consume in time.

Isn't he still butthurt that we killed him?

no
>>
>>44062145
That should be easily solvable with a simple 'you tried to eat me, bro'
>>
Cook him some meat, if he asks why we say it's because him and his pack keep other predators at bay, this is mutually beneficial

With the worries about Beren's pregnancy passed, you finally have time to relax. Wait... Wait, wasn't there something you were supposed to do this year? Something important- Ah shit, you forgot to check on the food you planted. Well... Better late than never.

With everyone else distracted, you sneakily find the place you planted the seeds in the spring. Left unchecked, they've grown wild and have been smothered under the snow, but it looks like they take only a couple of seasons to grow properly. Success! Now you just have to convince the clan that eating this stuff isn't as disgraceful as just chewing on mouthfuls of grass like goats. If anything, convincing people of that may be even harder than figuring out the right conditions for growing this stuff in the first place.

Who will you go to, to try and introduce agriculture to the clan?
>The Elders. You're one of them now (sort of) so they should listen more.
>Mesut. He's well-respected and looked up to, so his support and adoption would help.
>Your old family. They're the most used to your strangeness, so might listen to you
>Just announce it to the tribe and count on their respect for you to do the job

I mean, a little? He's not butt hurt enough to come after us, and is willing to trade. I don't think he'd mind if we shared our hunt, it'd go to waste otherwise and I'm sure Soqed can appreciate a cooked meal
>>
>>44063365
He's already spoken about how much he loves the taste. And he's interested enough in us that maybe we can ask him about the other spirits.

Proud of your creation, you immediately go to tell your extended family about it. With the ability to grow plants where and when you want them, rather than relying on the uncertain supply of the herds. It gives a lot more variety too and you even show them the odd method that Beren has discovered, using the flour from the seeds; coating beef in flour and wild, pungent herbs before grilling it on a hot stone by the fire. While that little treat goes down well, your idea of growing the food yourselves is treated as just another strange plan. The issue is that, unlike your slings, you can't readily demonstrate this in real-time. In the end, you only get kind and non-committal support from your family basically telling you, "Right, well, you go and try that dear." It's honestly rather patronising. Their more solid point, backed up by tradition, is that you're head of your own family now and shouldn't be relying on them for help, except in circumstances that could harm the entire tribe.

At least you haven't wasted much time with all this. Checking on the crops barely took a day.

What we need to do to convince the whole tribe now is to work openly on our taming plants project and show the results. Couldn't we also have rolled cha+leader for this?
>>
>>44064832
You're more like a respected member of the tribe whom a lot of people listened to regarding a big deal. Your force of personality helped provide a productive direction when it looked like everything was about to tear itself apart.

There's a big difference between that and being the autocratic ruler.

Starting the count now.
>>
>>44065214
I figured as much. Being chief sounded more honorary then anything official.
>>
You know, it'd be helpful if you guys said the kind of stuff you really want to talk to the clan about. Otherwise I'll just give generic status reports.

The clan is generally warm and content. It doesn't look like they can be moved easily to action right now, but at least the abundance of food is keeping them happy. Winter's always a dull time, as there's little enough to occupy everyone, but the tribe makes do with music, painting designs on their homes, or the ever-popular act of increasing the population.

As you're taking the time to relieve yourself, you notice something skulking around at the back of your camp. Three somethings, in fact, that scatter as soon as they feel your gaze on them. They looked like wolves; young, underfed and scavenging what they can from a pile of refuse. Your clan does its best to use everything they can from a kill, but some parts inevitably are damaged or useless and so are thrown out. As the wolves scatter, you wonder... Soqed can be spoken to and while the last few years have shown you he's far too proud to do much else than offer help if he's been bribed well enough, perhaps certain wolves could be made to treat a human as their alpha? If you feed them and offer them an easier life than in the wild, maybe they can help you in turn? It's an interesting thought that tugs at your mind for weeks after.

Hey didn't you say we'd get +1 to wits if we tamed plants?
>>
>>44066971
Oh shit, yeah, I did, didn't I?

I was so wrapped up in the idea that I'd award stat points for write/drawfaggotry or just good roleplaying that I totally forgot.

Anyway, counting the votes for this thread's last update.
>>

You should give stats and skills according to what we use to be honest.
>>
>For your world-changing discovery of agriculture, you gain a point of wits!

For the rest of the winter, you are consumed by the thought of having your own pack of wolves. There's so many advantages, not least of which being their capacity for hunting. Wolves can track their prey for miles, keep watch while you sleep, even provide warmth and companionship, if not an extra set of hands. In a pinch, they might even be able to pull a travois for you.

Of course, there are risks too... They might never see a human as their alpha, or if they do, they might attack others. You feel sick to even think about what might happen if a wolf took a dislike to any of your children. Then there's the matter of Soqed. He clearly sees himself as master of the packs in the valley, but does he care for the outcasts you saw scavenging the waste pile? You somehow doubt he'll be as easy to fight a second time, if it comes to that.

Eventually, all you can decide is that it's worth a try. The prospect of friendly wolves is just too tempting to pass up.

I just got through a hard time too. Just remember not to make anything harder on yourself than it needs to be. It doesn't matter what happens, it only matters how you react to it.
