You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!

You watch as the Breton column splits away from the main force, the rows upon rows of brightly colored VTs marching off to war. In the distance, you see columns of smoke and smog billowing from the the Iron Foundry. Even from this distance, the smoke was thick enough to see, like an ominous storm cloud.

And yet the base the Tileans were attacking, Der Riese, somehow seemed far less pleasant. You were expecting to face lots of the undead, after all.

"Are you okay, Roy?" Tarin asks, looking back from her seat. "You seem rather quiet."

"Nah, it's nothing. Business as usual, right?" You smile reassuringly.

"If you say so." Tarin nods slightly as she returns to her driving duties.

The convoy continues on as hundreds of VTs and thousands of troops begin to converge on Der Riese. You swear as that you get closer to the facility, the sky begins to get darker and gloomier, even though the sun had only just risen. The air also seemed to get heavy and oppressive, like you were in an incredibly humid environment. You glance at Tarin, who doesn't appear phased at all. Was it just in your head?

It's not long until Sawyer signals a stop, just a few miles from Der Riese. Almost immediately, the troops begin disembarking from their transports and mechanics make last minute checks on the VTs and other vehicles. Up ahead, you find what looks to a hastily abandoned road checkpoint. The guards couldn't have pulled out more than a day ago.

"Looks like they're expecting us." Tarin muses.

"Looks like it." You nod.

"All right, Platoon, I just got off the horn with the Colonel." Bannon sighs. "He's given us a choice. We can either roll forward with the advance force to punch a hole in the line, advance with the infantry to keep them covered, or we move out to flank them while the main force keeps them busy."

"Well, we've sort of picked up a knack for hitting the Reiks in unexpected places." You grin. "I say we go for the flank."

"Yeah, I'm with the kid here." Rock says in agreement.

"Hey, no matter where we go, we got Reiks to kill!" Axel says happily.

"Looks like we're decided, then." Parker announces.

"Yeah, yeah. We'll hit the flank." Bannon sighs, not exactly enthusiastic at the idea. "Hold on while I hash out the details with the Colonel.

>You can choose ONE supporting asset!

FOX TANK DESTROYER: Even though based on the Wolverine chassis, the Fox may as well be a completely brand new VT. Developed in response to the appearance of Reikland heavy armor, the Fox is armed with a might 90mm cannon. However, the sheer size and weight of the weapon meant Tilean engineers could only put it in a fixed mount, and had to remove practically all semblance of armor. However, as a result, the Fox is surprisingly quick for a medium VT.

RACCOON LIGHT VT SCOUT TEAM: A pair of Raccoon light VTs. Armed only with light, rapid fire 20mm cannons, Raccoons are not particularly powerful or tough, but their speed and small size make them nightmares to hit.

ARTILLERY BATTERY: While they cannot directly accompany you, every so often a mobile artillery battle will be able to lay down a volley at any point you target, causing a large amount of destruction in a wide area.

"All right boys and girls, we got an artillery battery at our beck and call, so we can have them blow up anything nasty we encounter." Bannon announces. "The Colonel is going to start the attack in thirty minutes. Once the main force moves in and grabs their attention, that's when we make our move. However, even with the distraction, we'll still have to play this smart. No telling what we can encounter. so we'll split into two teams. One stays back to provide fire support while the other moves in to put pressure on the enemy positions. Any questions?"

"Well, with our gun, I think we're better suited for fire support." You say.

"Well, time to decide everybody else." Bannon grunts.

You stop to think about it. Bannon and Parker's VT, being a command variant, had better optics and could do a better job of spotting and calling out targets for you, especially with all of the obstacles and cover in the area. Axel and Alfie in Brick would provide a solid anchor to draw fire from you and absorb shots with their heavier armor. Finally, there was Rock and Alex, whose combined experience was probably much greater than everybody else in the platoon.

"All right, me and Roy will stay back to provide fire support." Bannon grunts. "Alex, Axel, you two are going to go in and take the fight straight to them. Got it?"

"Hell yeah!" Axel whoops.

"Roger." Alex confirms.

"And remember to stay in line of sight whenever you can!" Parker reminds them. "We can't support you if we can't see you!"

"W-we'll remember!" Alfie squeaks.

Suddenly, you begin to hear booming and screeching as artillery and rocket rounds sail over heads towards Der Riese. In the distance, just over the horizon, you can see the flashes from the exploding ordnance, like lightning in a storm. All around, you can see VTs and troops begin surging forward and the more rapid beats of mass automatic fire could be heard.

"Looks like it's starting! Let's move!" Bannon barks as his VT roars to life. You nod to Tarin and she revs up Clementine's engines.

"All right, Bannon!" You hear Colonel Sawyer's voice bark. "My forward observers have already started marking targets of interest! I'll leave which one you hit to your discretion, but act fast! The defense is just as tough as we feared, so we need every little bit to crack this defense!"

"Y-yes sir!" Bannon stammers.

>Choose a target to attack!

ARTILLERY SECTION: Scouts have confirmed the presence of an artillery battery that has begun bombarding friendly forces. The battery appears to be mobile as counterbattery is apparently ineffective.

ESCAPE ROUTE: Aerial recon confirmed the presence of a large rail line and road leading out of Der Riese, no doubt to ship in supplies. Command's concern is that the Reiklanders may use it as a route to ship out critical materials if the line isn't cut.

MAIN LABORATORY: With the defenders being pulled to the perimeter, this leaves the inner defenses as weak as they will ever be. Perhaps one daring push can bring this attack to a swift end...

"How about we make a strike straight for the main lab?" You suggest. "It'll guarantee that we take out whatever they're making down there and I don't think they'd expect such an attack."

"Yeah! Going in hard and deep, just the way I like it!" Axel laughs.

"A-Axel!" Alfie chides her brother.

"Well, it WILL accomplish our object much quicker if we can pull it off." Parker observes. "I think we should go for it."

"I knew I was going to regret this." Bannon groans as his VT comes to a halt. "All right, it looks like the defenses are relatively thin here. According to the maps we can use the debris here has cover to get right up to the facility."

You pop your hatch and peer out. Even at midday, the place seemed dark and gloomy. The various statutes, graves, and headstones littering the area wasn't helping, either. Other than a few pillboxes, you didn't see any other major defenses.

"Okay, Alex, Axel, you know what to do." Bannon continues. "Bust down the door."

"AWWWW YEAH!" Axel whoops as Brick lumbers forward, breaking the cover of the forest and barreling towards the statue field at full speed.

Almost immediately, tracers zoom out from the darkness, striking and ricocheting off Brick's hull as the VT fired both its coaxial MG and main cannon in response. Lagoon followed close behind, using its better maneuverability to take potshots at the Reikland positions before ducking back behind Brick's armored bulk for shelter. Pretty soon, they were halfway across the field, wading through a field of MG bullets and sporadic cannon fire.

"I spot two pillboxes laying down heavy MG fire. Possible sighting of an AT gun." Bannon mumbles. "You're free to fire."

You decide to hold off on firing for now. No sense giving away your position when it seemed like Brick and Lagoon were handling things just fine. Both VTs stop short of the field of discarded statues and stone debris and begin swiveling their turrets, sweeping foxholes and trench lines with unrelenting fire. The terrain that gave the Reiklanders cover was also their bane, as it preventing their larger AT guns from getting a clear shot at either Brick or Lagoon. You see the still living defenders break and flee past scores of the expected undead troops, armed with a vast assortment of weapons.

"Well damn, that's a lot of them." Rock grunts. "What do we do?"

And then... nothing happens.

Well, nothing happened in that the undead soldiers seem to shut down, slumping forward with their artificial steel skeletons being the only thing holding them up.

"Well I'll be damned, the damn thing actually worked!" Axel utters in complete surprise.

"I told you it would!" Alfie says as you can hear her punch her brother in the shoulder.

"Haha! It's open season on these bastards!" Rock cackles as Lagoon literally waves into the mass of bodies, not even bothering to waste ammo. Lagoon's feet begin kicking and stomping the helpless undead soldiers.

"Hey, that looks pretty fun! I wanna join in!" Axel whines.

"Are there any?" Parker asks curiously.

"Ummmm. besides the increased power draw, e-everything looks green." Alfie says. "As long as we don't put too much stress on Brick..."

"Let's keep moving forward! We don't have time to waste!" Bannon barks as his VT begins striding forward. You tap Tarin on the shoulder to signify her to move as well.

The two of you clear the open graveyard and cross into the beginning of the debris field. Even from here, the sounds of the main battle sound distant, as if they were in another continent. Here, everything was just unsettlingly quiet. Not only were the undead soldiers well... dead, but there didn't seem to be any other living soul present.

"Shit, this place is really giving me the creeps." Bannon groans.

"Let's keep moving." Parker advises.

Now regrouped, you platoon trudges further into the debris field, weaving your between massive stone chunks and old statues. You keep your eyes sharp, as every piece of cover was a potential hiding spot for a gun crew or an AT team. Fortunately, most of the positions here seemed to still be manned by the undead soldiers, which go slack and drop their weapons the moment Brick approaches.

"Looks like they haven't caught on yet." Tarin notes.

"Let's just hope it stays that way." You frown.

"We're not making any progress here!" Axel seethes. "Come on, we know this thing works! They've got nothing to stop us!"

"I wouldn't jump to conclusions yet, kid." Rock warns.

"We're losing a lot of time, though." Bannon grimaces. "We need to pick up the pace."

"I agree with Rock, let's do this slow and steady." You say.

"I think they're right." Parker says as she verbally nudges Bannon.

"Yeah, yeah. We'll do this careful." Bannon grumbles. You can just imagine him looking around at the surrounding marble and copper statues, half built and slowly crumbling or rusting away. Each vaguely humanoid shape seeming to alternate between such a statute or an actual person.

"Well, the undead troops a-are neutralized, right?" Alfie stammers.

"Doesn't mean that's their only defense." Alex points out.

"Roy, I think I see movement." Tarin snaps. "3 'o clock, behind that horse statue."

You try to peer through your periscope and can vaguely see the horse statute Tarin was describing, but couldn't see much else.

You wonder if there was really something there or not, but you didn't want to waste a tank shell and risk giving away your position. You carefully open up your hatch, your eyes darting about for any possible enemies. Just in case, you grab hold of the pintle mounted .50 as you squint your eyes for a better look...

It's then that you catch movement. Soldiers. Not undead soldiers, and not regular Reikland infantry. These soldiers wore heavy armor, as well as black facemasks. However, what was most concerning was just the the SPEED they moved, not just faster than the undead troops, but faster than you've ever seen regular people move, for that matter. They darted and leaped and from cover to cover, opening up with submachine guns and spraying Clementine relentlessly.

"Enemy infantry! Enemy infantry!" You shout as you drop back down into the hatch and fire your cannon reflexively. You see the troops scatter, but you can't tell if you've done any damage or not.

"Shit, I see them too!" Rock announces.

Suddenly, a rocket screeches out from the statues, striking Brick's front plate, leaving a black scorch mark. A second rocket screams in front he left, striking and bouncing off the sloped turret.

"Damnit it, they're going for Brick! They know!" Bannon grunts.

"We have to move! We can't let them surround us!" You yell as you fire another cannon shell into the gloom.

"All units move forward!" Bannon barks. "Axel's VT has to be protected at ALL costs! It's the only thing keeping us alive here! Shield them with your own VT if you have to!"

The hail of bullets continue to rain down on your VTs. They weren't doing any significant damage, but you knew they were doing it in an attempt to unnerve you, and it was working rather well. Rockets still screamed out, trying to score a killing blow on Brick.

Up ahead, you could see the perimeter of the main facility, which was a flat open ground. If you could reach that place, it would deny these infantry their cover. Even better, you could see the tunnel leading into the main laboratory underground. If you could get in there, it would funnel their advance.

The issue was actually reaching it.

"Call in the artillery, sir!" You yell to Bannon as your coaxial MG fires, spraying rounds all over the statues. "We need to shake these guys off of us!"

"Are you crazy?!" Bannon shrieks. "You'll be calling it right on top of us! I can't do that!"

"Sorry sir, but I already did!" Parker says cheerfully. "Everybody hold on tight!"

"This is going to suck." Tarin sighs as you can hear the whistling of incoming shells.

Shells start to land all around as your VTs crouch down to present a smaller target. Thankfully, the shells the arty boys were lobbing were airburst shells, meant to explode above the ground and throw shrapnel everywhere. It was an anti infantry weapon, meant to kill with steel and shockwave. Fortunately, you were sitting in a giant metal box, which would protect you from both, even if such a shell were to explode directly on top of you.

Finally, the explosions stop, and silence reigns once again. This time, you don't even try and take a glance outside.

"All right, all units, move move MOVE!" Bannon barks. "While they're scattered!"

Lagoon is the first VT to move, sprinting off towards the main compound to secure a route. Both you and Bannon stick close to the slower Brick as it lumbers towards the main compound. Thankfully, there's no incoming fire from behind.

Your VTs all lumber towards the tunnel, which doesn't look any more inviting than the graveyard that you had just fought through.

"We'll have to leave two VTs behind to cover the entrance and keep it open." Bannon says. "So who's gonna volunteer to go inside?"

"Rock, Alex, how about you come in with us?" You ask.

"Sure thing, kid. Though indoors fights aren't exactly my cup of tea." Rock responds.

"I'm not a big fan of them either." Alex adds.

"Tarin, take us into the tunnel." You instruct.

"Moving." Tarin nods as she has Clementine trundle forward. Up front, you see a large armored security door, which doesn't put up much resistance to Clementine's 76mm cannon. The armored steel peels back like paper, and is blown apart when Lagoon adds its firepower to the mix.

"After you, Rock." You say politely.

"Well, thank you." Rock chuckles as Lagoon treads into the tunnel first. You fall in behind.

The tunnel is long and fairly wide. Enough for you to be able to stride alongside Lagoon. You figure this tunnel was used to carry a lot of heavy equipment through. Up ahead, you see what appears to be a rail platform. On it, there was an armored train that looked to be preparing to leave. You could see scores of workers hurriedly loading in containers and crate as fast as possible, no doubt trying to evacuate.

"My my, I did not expect the Tileans to have fought there way this far in." A cultured, well clip voice says with amusement through large loudspeakers. "To think that you would be able to penetrate my first and second line of defenses."

"Cut the crap, Strasse." You hear Rock growl, Lagoons cannon pointing right at the train engine. "We've got you cornered. There's nowhere to run."

"Hm, perhaps I should have deployed my third line?" Strasse muses, completely ignoring Rock's ultimatum. "Well, I suppose they need to have some proper training eventually!"

"What's he talking about?" Alex says, perplexed when one of the train cars bursts open, and two massive, quadruped VTs stalk out. But the way they move... it's too smooth and natural, as if they were living creatures instead of machines.

"Well, I would love to see if my Panzerhunds perform to my expectations, but as you can see, I'm in a rather big hurry, so auf wiedersehen!"

With that, the train's engines roar to life as the Panzerhunds charge.
