You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, and it seems you've finally been dragged into the chaos that has rocked the Seireitei since Kuchiki Rukia's arrest in the living world.

Some distance to your right, your daughter Rangiku has engaged Captain Tōsen Kaname, one of Aizen's flunkies and the man responsible for betraying your predecessor Kensei. The blind man leaves you a bit wary: you know precious little about his actual abilities, although the fact that he's clearly underestimated Rangiku's skill and power leaves you hopeful that your daughter may score a decisive victory.

Before you, however, stands another problem: Captain Komamura Sajin, a large wolf-man who has been a friend of Tōsen's for many years. He's a Captain fanatically devoted to the notion of “justice”, who has apparently been convinced that justice means taking you and Rangiku into custody at any cost. His large body means he's probably quite strong, at least in terms of pure muscle strength, so although his reiatsu can't hold a candle to your own a successful blow may still wound you. It's also problematic that you know so little about his sword, or his degree of training in shunpo. He's big, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's slow. It's safe to assume he's slower than you: almost every shinigami is, after all.

Any assumptions beyond that could be dangerous. Komamura draws his sword, and you do the same.

“Your Lieutenant has done well to keep up with Tōsen so far,” Komamura growls, apparently meaning to commend Rangiku despite his gruff tone. “I am not so soft-hearted as to hold back against a lady.”

“Roar!” the Captain shouts, “Tenken!”

Above Komamura's swirling reiatsu, you see the ghostly form of a massive sword appear seemingly from nowhere. It's aligned to match the position of his own sword, a confident sweep from which swings the building-sized blade towards you as well. It's slow however, and you manage to sidestep it. The building below you isn't so fortunate, and half of it begins to crumble away under the force of the blow.

As the dust clears you note that the sword is gone and Komamura has moved behind you. A horizontal swing of his sword alerts you to the onrushing blade of Tenken, which destroys the remaining building in a cloud of tiles and rubble.

“Not bad!” you commend Sajin, having embedded Tenkotsuki into the side of Tenken's spectral blade and simply gone along for a ride. “I didn't expect proper Te no Uchi to translate so well to those attacks. Your fundamental technique is flawless.”

“To have discerned so much from the movement of Tenken itself,” Komamura replies, with what looks like a grin tugging at his canine cheeks, “and to account for my speed and skill after only seeing it once... your reputation must be well-deserved after all.”

“So, Lady Riku,” Tenkotsuki interrupts. “Have you decided how you wish to fight?”

“This is my zanpakuto,” Mirai announces quietly, staring across the flat roof where she and Lieutenant Kira have stopped to fight. “Sesshōseki. Its power is to make yours irrelevant.”

“You think you don't have to worry about facing a Lieutenant? Surely there must be some limit to your arrogance,” Kira counters, drawing his own sword and releasing his reiatsu. “Shall we find it together, Fourth Seat?”

“Raise your head and prepare to die, Wabisuke!”

The Lieutenant immediately attacks his opponent, a rather petite young woman from the Ninth Division wearing a sleeveless white haori like that of her Captain. Everything about her must strike the rookie Lieutenant as arrogant, from her decision to wear a uniform so much like a Captain's to her relaxed attitude. His hooked, angular blade rings loudly as Mirai parries it several times in quick succession with her heavy kanabō, which she moves with startling speed and grace.

Kira grins at the results of the exchange, as if he's already secured a victory.

“My Wabisuke doubles the weight of whatever it cuts,” he declares, and the kanabō in Mirai's hands slams down into the roof in a cloud of ceramic sherds. “Would you say that club of yours weighed about fifteen kilograms? After exchanging blows with me eight times, it now weighs two hundred and forty.”

Lieutenant Kira vaults into the air, sword held high as he prepares to deliver a fatal blow. “It's over!”

As Kira falls towards his would-be victim, Mirai can't help but grin. She shifts her stance, easily swinging the warclub in a wide arc as she turns, and slams it with titanic force into Kira's exposed ribs. Any forward momentum he had disappears instantly, and instead he's thrown down to the rooftop to Mira's right side. Much of the structure is pulverized on impact.

“Confidence is not the same as arrogance,” Mirai scowls down at her victim, who lays motionless on the ground below. "Learn the difference."

“I'll end this in one attack,” you declare confidently as Tenken's blade disappears once more. Komamura stares at you in obvious disgust.

“Such arrogance,” he replies, holding out his sword. “Do you truly think you can defeat me so easily?”

“Bankai: Kokujō Tengen Myō'ō!”

Behind Komamura rises the giant figure of a demon wearing heavy iron armor, the blade in its hand now appearing very much solid. Its eyes burn a fiery red within the slits in its helmet as it mirrors the Captain's movements. With such a physically powerful body behind that sword, its destructive power has probably increased exponentially.

It'd be best not to get hit by that.

“Tenkotsuki,” you greet your blade as you ready yourself to make good on your promise to end this fight in one step, “please prepare number 91 for me. I will do the rest.”

“Of course,” Tenkotsuki replies cheerfully to you before beginning her chant. “Limit of the thousand hands, respectful, unable to touch the darkness, shooting hands unable to reflect the blue sky...”

You dash forwards with your blade held high, building as much force as you can in your arms and shoulders even as the swirling tempest of your sōkō shunkō explodes from your body, ripping at your clothes with a force that would shred any normal garment with its ferocity. The monstrous form of Tenken brings in its sword to block you, Komamura clearly sensing the danger presented by your head-on attack and hoping to crush you under his Bankai's blade.

“The road basking in light, the wind igniting the embers, time that gathers when both are together, no need for hesitation, obey my orders...”

Hirenkyaku allows you to vault over the giant blade, landing on your feet behind Komamura. Shock is etched into his features as your muscles visibly bulge, and you release a massively powerful Kamaitachi at him, which he seems to have anticipated. He begins his defense even as you start your swing.

“Bakudo 81: Dankū!” he calls, managing to disperse the force of your strike with the powerful defensive kidō. That said, he's obviously alarmed when the simple zanjutsu is able to crach and nearly break through his barrier.

“Light bullets, eight bodies, nine items, book of heaven, diseased treasure, great wheel, grey tower. Aim far, scatter bright and clean when fired!”

Komamura tries to use shunpo to escape the attack you've planned, hoping that what remains of his Dankū will buy him time to counteract your strategy.

It doesn't.

“Hadō 91: Senjū Kōten Taihō!”

Nine violet spears of blinding light race not towards Komamura himself, but towards his Bankai. The giant, nearly immobile soldier paints a perfect target, and the blast lifts it cleanly off its feet and hurls it into the air like a ragdoll.

You'd be concerned about it crushing something important, but thankfully it seems to disperse as it falls back down towards the earth. Komamura comes crashing down as well, and neither speaks nor stands.

Is it possible that the Captain's connection to that giant goes both ways?

Rangiku and Tōsen seem to have disappeared into a large structure that's sprung up around the rooftop they were fighting on like a black mushroom cloud, which feels like it's made from the Captain's reiatsu. It must be his Bankai... but you can't feel what's going on inside it at all.

IIRC, in canon Aizen took him down with a level 90 Kido that he quick-cast so it wasn't as powerful as normal. (After Komamura had been in a fight with a Captain, admittedly...)

Here, we fully incantated a level 91 Kido and hit him with it dead on.

Even then, the main reason it worked to OHKO him was partly due to luck -- we were able to get a perfect direct hit because his Bankai is a huge target, and it transfers all damage to him.

I mean, we would still have WON the fight in one blow even without the damage-sharing -- because we were expecting to totally shut down his Bankai.

We thought we'd beat his Bankai with one blow. It turned out that we also beat HIM with one blow too...
>>

“If this is what survival feels like,” the Captain groans, “I may have preferred death. Why did you spare me?”

Frowning at first at the implied accusation, you turn back to face the dome of Tōsen's Bankai. “Because as much as you seem to think I'm your enemy, I'm not.”

“You could have fooled me.”

With a sigh, you return Tenkotsuki to her sheath.

“The situation is complicated,” you reply simply. “Far more so than you realize. It's my hope that when this is all over I'll get the chance to explain properly.”

“You did not kill Aizen,” Komamura mutters quietly, almost to himself. “That seems clearer to me now after crossing blades with you. So I look forward to your explanation. But for now, may I ask a favor?”

You shrug. “You can, but remember I'm under no obligation.”

“Please take me to where Captain Tōsen is fighting. There are questions now that I would like to ask him.”

Either Riku had been too fucking good at outkeikakuing Aizen, or he had far better auxiliary force waiting for us if Stevie wonder jobs to our Lieutenant here. So far his workings had been just sending Momo and then these scrubs, which is just sad.

Or he could just be dead, and this entire fiasco would result in Riku taking Aizen's place in canon due to circumstances lining up against her being set up by hidden party

>>
>>44002004

Her Shikai is turning the blade to dust. Her bankai returns it to a blade while keeping a large volume of dust active. Pretty fucking brutal if used with the proper mind.

>>"My Bankai," Haineko practically purrs. "Byakkokiri. I almost thought I'd never see it. Every Japanese sword contains steel crystals, called nie, which shine like tiny stars. My Bankai compresses Rangiku's reiatsu into clouds of these crystals, and further compressing the crystals into a blade makes them truly deadly.”

>>Sure enough, Haineko's blade has become a silvery edge that flickers and dances like an open flame, without visibly reducing the amount of shining dust in the air around Rangiku.

It negates everything but touch, she can keep a light film of dust active.

“Fine,” you sigh, lifting Komamura's battered body over your shoulder. “But you try and cop a feel, I'll take your arm off and beat you to death with it.”

“You have my word.”

As you carry Komamura towards your daughter's battlefield, you see the giant structure ahead of you rip itself apart like a balloon. You can immediately feel Rangiku again, seemingly hurt but still in reasonable shape, while her foe is severely weakened.

“He cannot maintain his Bankai any more,” Sajin observes. “It seems your Lieutenant is something special.”

Setting Komamura down on the pavement, you give your daughter a once-over. Her shoulder has been wounded with a deep slash, but it could be much worse. In fact it hardly seems to be affecting her performance, and she waves to you when she spots you.

“I see you wrapped up quickly, too!” Rangiku greets you cheerfully. “He's not dead, is he?”

“I could ask you the same,” you observe, jerking your thumb in the direction of Tōsen. The Captain is trying to stand, but his wounds are severe: especially around his ankles and feet, which leave you astonished that they can even support his weight.

“The man's starting to look like a real ghost.”

Rangiku chuckles to herself. “Yeah, that's what happens when you step on my Bankai... I used her ashes as a sensor. Tōsen never figured...”

“Behind you!” you shout, as the Captain you thought to have been mostly immobilized puts on a sudden burst of speed. Perhaps it's a final attempt, as his feet look almost ready to come off from the exertion. To your astonishment, he manages to ram his sword through Rangiku's gut as she turns to face him.

“I hold no grudge against you,” Tōsen declares, “but for the sake of peace...”

You fully expected her to parry that, to the point where you didn't even bother to move. She had more than enough time to do so, and clearly saw it coming, but instead she just took it? That's when her reasoning becomes clear to you.

“You never learn, do you Tōsen?” Rangiku sighs as her body splits into two identical clones, each one with the same spiritual presence as she normally has. The two clones run the Captain through his gut with their respective copies of Haineko, one through the front and one through his back.

Spitting up blood, the traitor falls to the rooftop like a puppet whose strings have been cut.

“I won't condemn you to death for your treachery,” a third Rangiku insists quietly as the two clones from before dissipate into wisps of sparkling silver dust. “That's not my place, nor is it my desire. Your crimes were not against me.”

“Captain? Shall I?” Rangiku glances down at the Captain, understanding how easy it would be to remove him as a threat forever right here and now. And yet, her voice seems uncertain.

And here's the mythological tie-in: the Ainu, an indigenous people native to Hokkaido, had a fable warning hunters about the lynx. There was a very specific way you were supposed to deal with them, as anything else was believed to cause them to split into many clones of the original lynx, numbering up to thousands.

With her Bankai, Haineko can use the reflective, razor-sharp steel crystals to reflect visible light and reiatsu in such a way that it creates tangible clones, similar to Soi Fon's speed clones but capable of killing. When struck they can either shear apart the weapon striking them, or split off and multiply. Thus, the ability is translated roughly as "Dance of the Lynx", using the Ainu word for lynx which I can't recall right now.

“What a lazy way to fight,” you comment, noticing that this third Rangiku is unharmed aside from a few scratches. Those probably weren't even from the Bankai, but rather the clashing of their respective Shikai. “Still, damn proud of you. When did you make the switch?”

“Bout five seconds after he used Bankai,” Rangiku admits sheepishly. “Figured he was probably delivering some sort of monologue, so I used that time to release Bankai and make preparations. The tactile feedback from Haineko's ashes let me know how to adjust the clone's performance appropriately.”

“So... really, Captain. What do we do with him?”

“Leave him,” you reply with a shrug. “Not worth you killing him, and I want him to face a proper trial. His death won't change anything, but at least lording the moral high ground over him will be satisfying.”

Your daughter laughs at the notion. “You're not wrong!”

“Incredible,” Komamura groans. “How is it that two Captains were so woefully inadequate?”

“It's because we're better than anyone thought!” Rangiku explains. “Also, because our hearts and thoughts are pure.”

You can't help but cock an eyebrow at her for that comment. “Take it easy there, kiddo.”

“You've mentioned a few times that you have a grudge against Kaname,” Komamura continues, taking the time to choose his words carefully. “Why is that? What crimes has he committed?”

“Whatever you think Tōsen is,” you frown, “I can guarantee you, you're wrong. If you'd like I can contact the Valhallans when this is all over, and put you in touch with his former Captain: my predecessor, Muguruma Kensei.”

“He'll be happy to point out the discrepancies between the Captain you think you know, and the man he really is.”

“All those answers in due time,” you reply cautiously. “But until then, I have preparations of my own to make. I'm certain my Fourth Seat has wrapped up and alerted Captain Unohana to the situation, so I'll leave you here for now.”

You disappear from the demolished buildings just as quickly as you arrived, making a beeline for Mirai's location. When you meet up with her, it seems that she's made easy work of Lieutenant Kira.

“No problems?” you ask, sparing a glance at what's left of Kira.

Mirai shakes her head quietly. “No, ma'am. Lieutenant Kira's shikai had no effect on my zanpakuto, so I played along.”

“Until he left me an opening, at least.”

Rangiku sighs, hands resting lightly on her hips. “How come so many of the cute guys are also such idiots?”

“What, you don't think Gin is cute?” you taunt, flustering your daughter as Shūhei meets with you as well. He seems more out of breath than the rest of you are.

“Did you have trouble, Hisagi?” Rangiku smirks confidently. “What were you doing while the Captain and I were off pasting two Captain class fighters?”

“Nothing!” Hisagi protests. “He was just a little stronger than I gave him credit for, that's all! I had it under control!”

“Sure you did, tiger,” Rangiku teases. “I'm sure you did juuuuust fine!”

To be fair, we learned Soko Shunko in two days. She has 3, so she might get it to around the level Sui Feng had in cannon at this point.

“We're returning to the Division,” you order. “I need to address them about this.”

Upon your arrival you have your subordinates gather all of your Division together in the training range for an announcement. You can feel the crowd buzzing with a nervous energy as they wait for the last stragglers to join them.

When you begin to speak, they quickly settle down.

“Earlier today I was stopped by Captains Komamura and Tosen, who attempted to arrest me under false pretense of having been involved in the death of Captain Aizen. Needless to say, I chose not to cooperate. Between myself, Lieutenant Matsumoto, and our Commandos, we defeated the Captains as well as their Lieutenants with minimal difficulty. However, that leaves a dilemma.”

“The difficulty now is that there is a strong possibility that our Division will be targeted in some fashion. Most likely, anyone remaining on our grounds will be placed under house arrest until Lieutenant Matsumoto and I are captured. As such, I have a difficult order for you: do not resist.”

A murmur runs through the crowd as you explain yourself. “If you are not attacked with lethal force, don't risk any lives in resisting. If I'm right, the Seireitei will need our Division in peak fighting form. For that to happen, none of you can be wounded or killed by this sort of stupidity. Which is why for now, I ask you to bear the unbearable and go along with it.”

“Nikko will be in charge until I can return without causing problems for our Division. If things turn nasty, follow his lead. I'll be back when I can.”

Your Commandos look to you expectantly. While Rangiku is clearly better off going into hiding herself, their best response is less clear.

“Do as you see fit,” you tell them. “You wouldn't be Commandos if I didn't trust your judgment... just don't get carted off to some other Division. I'd hate to have to stage a jailbreak.”

“I'll remain here,” Hisagi bows slightly. “This is my Division. I have a responsibility to them.”

Mirai offers a noncommittal shrug. “I would be more useful at your side, Lady Riku. I would accomany you, if you would allow it.”

“Good,” you nod curtly. “Kai, Hisagi, it's on you for now. Rangiku, Mirai, you're with me.”

Once you're clear, you get a sudden stroke of inspiration: you should probably speak with Kisuke about this. He may have some insights as to what Aizen's true objective may be. So you carefully mask your reiatsu and open a garganta to the living world, crossing through with your Lieutenant and Commando in tow.

“We're off to see Kisuke?” your daughter asks quizzically. “I also thought it was weird nobody came with the kids, for that matter. So I wouldn't mind asking.”

“That confused me too. I was sure Masaki would come with them at least,” you agree.

Something's wrong here. Something is DEEPLY wrong here.

“That's Yoruichi!” you exclaim, your reiatsu senses registering the familiar presence of your wife in a place she absolutely shouldn't be. “And the kids are all here too? How the hell can that be possible?”

“What do you mean they're here?” Rangiku asks, confusion painfully obvious in her features. “They're all in their cells!”

You begin to get the sneaking suspicion that you know the answer as Yoruichi senses you and is on you almost immediately.

“What are you doing here!?” she hisses. “I mean I'm happy to see you, but you shouldn't be here! One of us has to cover for the other!”

“Well, I'm technically not here,” you reply. “Technically I'm trying to sort out Rukia's arrest right now.”

Yoruichi stares at you in dawning comprehension. “Oh... we didn't make it through the Dangai cleanly, did we?”

You shake your head. “Starting to look that way, yeah. I should probably be going now.”

“See you in a few days, Riku,” Yoruichi tells you, giving you a quick peck on the cheek.

You respond in kind. “And I'll see you in a few minutes.”

After Yoruichi leaves, your daughter turns to you in confusion. “I... don't even... what just happened?”

You quickly explain that due to a likely encounter with the “sweeper” during their attempt to sneak through the Dangai, which would ordinarily be made safe by an accompanying Hell Butterfly, Yoruichi and Ichigo's group were probably thrown back in time from the day they initially tried to break into the Soul Society. That would explain both the rapid improvement of Ichigo and Tatsuki as well as accounting for the fact that they're all still here: they technically haven't departed yet.

“Freaky,” Mirai observes after having calmly taken in the details.

“We've already fucked with the timeline by being here,” you observe. “Doing anything else while we're here may cause a paradox, and I don't get paid nearly enough to deal with that.”

Ripping open a portal to the Seireitei again, you escape the potential nightmare scenario in hopes that your brief intrusion won't cause too big of a problem later. You figure that at very worst you've merely done something that Yoruichi has already seen, and formed something of a closed causality loop. If that's the case, there shouldn't be any other effects.

After taking a quick look around to confirm that the entire Seireitei hasn't been set on fire due to your recent actions, you lead your group towards the Sōkyoku.

“They're probably training already,” you explain to Rangiku and Mirai. “So we won't cause too much of a disturbance.”

“Riku!” Yoruichi greets you cheerfully as you join her on a small plateau overlooking the training grounds. You can see that the better part of the room is filled with bizarrely shaped swords, which Ichigo is using to fight off a tall-looking man in a billowing black outfit. The man looks oddly familiar, though you can't place exactly where you've seen him.

“It looks a little like the Quincy King,” Rosa explains. “No clue why though. It's clearly not him.”

“So I take it you came right back here?' Yoruichi asks, giving you a quick peck once again.

You nod emphatically. “Yeah, screw that.”

“What sort of training is this?” Mirai asks.

Yoruichi shows her one of the dolls. “It's called a Tenshintai,” she explains. “It helps a shinigami train for Bankai in three days... when it works.”

“And when it doesn't work?” Mirai presses.

“No clue,” Yoruichi admits. “It's only ever been attempted by one person, and that time it worked.”
