Something's niggling at you. The two slaves who were responsible for carrying out the plan are both captured, you have whatever device Malika gave the slave tucked safely away inside your cloak, you've made sure that the Demirs are being kept safely on the palace grounds, and you feel confident that once the slaves confess you'll have more than enough evidence to see Malika banished, if you so choose. So why do you feel like you're forgetting something?

You run your fingers through your hair contemplatively as your attention flicks from your nerve-addled brother to the collapsed palace gates. It's right there, you can feel it stewing at the periphery of your consciousness. It was something that ghastly messenger from Surya had told you. Something about a punishment, or was it a payment? Gods above, this is going to bother you for the rest of the night.

Well, whatever it was it couldn't have been that important. Otherwise you would remember it, right? Rather than concern yourself with some minor, forgotten detail you turn your attention to your immediate circumstances. Plucking up the shortsword the slave had used in his attempt to kill your brother you tuck the strange blade swiftly into your cloak, before anyone else has the opportunity to claim it.

That done you turn to your brother and rest a comforting hand on his shoulder. Unfortunately he seems a little too shaken to really pay you any mind, his responses mumbled and absentminded. You wonder, was this his first real brush with death? For you escaping an early grave by mere inches has become routine, but you suppose that's not the case for most people. Regardless, you motion to a few of the palace guards keeping the nobles corralled and see to it that your brother and his wife are escorted safely to their rooms.

I think the fastest way to find out what is going on is to go to the slave we captured and ask her what she knows. If we promise her safety from the Demirs (e.g. send her to another part of our family's lands) she might tell us everything she knows.

You should probably check on Vicitra just in case that creature decided to kill him while you were unconscious. Wandering back into the palace you momentarily struggle to remember where his rooms were, you haven't exactly been keeping up with him since realizing that the resurrection was only a partial success. You've been more concerned with trying to figure out what exactly you did wrong, since it seems unlikely that anything you do now would help him recover his memories.

You find his room easily enough, it's only a few doors down from your own, but worryingly you find it ajar. It seems as though someone's come through here in a hurry recently. Peeking your head inside you see a hookah pipe has been knocked over, spilling black water across the wooden floor and staining the corner of one of the pillows. The rug has been thrown into disarray and the carefully arrayed furniture is askew. It looks like there might have been a fight in this room.

You approach the bedroom door with a growing sense of unease. Something isn't right here. As you grasp the handle you hear a muffled voice from the other side, though you can't make out what it's saying very clearly. Something about Pani, you think. Not Vicitra, you can say that much with confidence. Steeling yourself you twist the handle and throw the door wide, finding yourself staring straight at the bare ass of the boy you dragged back from the cusp of oblivion, thrusting vigorously into a woman dressed in noble's garb.

Frowning, you manifest an illusory rendition of a camel's head where the girl's own ought to be. He doesn't seem to notice at first, but when he does he practically leaps off of his conquest, tripping over his own two feet in his attempts to get as far away from her as possible. You really hope this girl isn't married, the last thing you need is this idiot getting killed by some cheated husband after you went through all the trouble of keeping him alive.

Only then do the couple seem to notice you, the girl screeching quite loudly while the Vicitra seems to shift rapidly between confusion, fear, and anger. You don't give either the opportunity to speak. “Have you seen a desiccated corpse promising you eternal paradise if you'll only kill me in my sleep pass through here?”

Vicitra doesn't quite seem to understand what you're asking. “I don't... think so? It seems like the sort of thing I'd notice.”

You grunt, shutting the door without further comment. At least you don't have to worry about waking up with a knife in your chest.

After we secure Malika, we really ought to thank Chryssa and Darzi for sticking their necks out for us. They were on the ball tonight, and thanks to them, we captured Malika and saved our brother's life. Pretty sure that slave would have offed our drunken bro no sweat if Darzi wasn't there, and Malika would have disappeared off to somewhere scot-free if it wasn't for Chryssa. On a more private brooch channel, we ought to offer to heal that scar Darzi got. She did get it by sticking her neck out for us after all. If she plays it down or off, we could always tease her about not knowing she was so into the Cult of Surya thing to make her capitulate.

Since it doesn't seem like that strange creature has any designs upon Vicitra's life, you elect to meet with Malika. Unfortunately finding her in this monstrously large palace proves easier said than done. You're wander aimlessly for quite a while before finding yourself back in the foyer, where you can ask a guard for directions. It looks like most of the nobles have been cleared out through a side entrance or taken up to their own rooms, so you shouldn't have to worry about any further disturbances this evening.

Malika's room ends up being a few floors above your own, at the top of one of the palace's six towers. The top three floors are all fused together into one suite, even while imprisoned she's afforded the absolute pinnacle of luxury. You're let inside by the guards and find the matronly grandmother pouring herself a cup of tea from a intricately carved glass pot. She doesn't seem at all surprised by your arrival, she's even already got a second cup poured.

You take a seat across from her on the plush feather cushions and daintily lift the cup off its saucer, though you don't drink any of its contents. For all you know the tea could be poisoned. “I trust you find your accommodations suitable?”

She smiles endearingly. “Oh don't you worry about me, I'm not that picky when it comes to where I choose to bed down. How is your brother? I do so hope he's okay.”

>>
You consider carefully how you want to approach this. You could come out aggressively, accusing her of attempting to assassinate your brother in the hopes of blackmailing her. However, that might show your hand too soon. She could still have some hidden trick up her sleeve. It might be better to play this subtly, hinting that you know without outright stating one way or the other, to see how she reacts.

In retrospect, you probably should've thought this out before entering the room.

>Accuse her of plotting against your brother and your family, see if you can't get something out of this travesty.
>Hint that you know and see if she takes the bait.
>Try and figure out a little more about the Demirs and their current strength.

Don't fucking take out the box. Its entirely possible that she might be able to activate it somehow if its close enough to her. When we looked at the box with magic sight there was reality fuckery in it; not a standard enchantment. We should at least show the box to Mahana and ask wtf is up with it first.
>>

>>43953042
From what we know about the box at this point, it most likely is a proximity affect type of attack. In otherwords, anyone within the radius will be killed or affected when it is activated.

If we are going to open the box, we need to be pretty close to her when we do. That way, if she does have some ability to affect its activation, she will be disinclined to activate it since she will be killed by it as well as us.

You ignore her question, instead reaching into your cloak and extracting the small wooden box you retrieved from the slave you caught. Her expression shifts, briefly flashing what might well be anger before transforming rapidly into one of confusion. “What's that you have?” She ask, hesitantly.

You decide to drop any pretenses. “I saw everything. I saw you speaking with the human slave, saw you hand her the box and send her off with instructions only to open it once the crown smashing ceremony had begun. I want to know what it is, and what it does.”

She shakes her head sadly, a deep frown creasing her brow. “I haven't the slightest idea what you're talking about. I was at the party all night, there's dozens of people who would vouch for me. Is this really how you treat guest in your home?”

You focus, fading swiftly from visibility, much to Malika's surprise. “Most of those friends can't follow you around invisibly, watching your every movement while you remain entirely unaware of their presence. I believe your exact words were something like, 'If it's not tonight, it will be never'. Does that ring a bell?”

After several tense minutes of silence you allow yourself to fade back into the range of visibility, plucking up the box with a sigh and grabbing the lid as if to open it. “I suppose I'm left with no other option then. I'll just have to open it up if I wish to find out what's inside.”

She's halfway through begging you to wait when you snap the lid open. Immediately you feel your consciousness slipping away, something tugging the soul from your body. The world goes black, and then all at once it returns as it was but moments before. The tattoos on your arms glow an ominous red as they writhe underneath your skin, twisting their way through your flesh with surprising grace.

Sadly Malika lacks your tattoos, and seems to be burning what little vys she has to resist the pull of the box. You channel Metal magic, reinforcing her soul's bonds with her body such that she remains conscious for the duration and has plenty of time to suffer its effects, and then with a flick of your wrist the box snaps shut.

The old woman is left breathing heavily, one hand clutching her gut. When finally she speaks, there seems to be a subtle humming in the background, although that might just be your imagination. “Dear, sweet Pani, you could have killed us both! I suppose if you're not going to be civil about this we can cut to the chase!”

She's practically screaming, though for some reason her voice seems muffled. Perhaps the effects of one of her other artifacts? “I don't fully know what's inside the box but I know what it does. It sucks out the souls of those in a fairly large area around the holder and destroys them, leaving their bodies a mindless husk. If left alone they'll flail about like fish pulled from water until dying of hunger or thirst.”

Well that sounds truly awful. “I assume you were hoping that the sudden incapacitation of their friends, family members, or peers would distract the nobles while your other lackey cut my brother in half, then? Had I and my friends not put an end to your plans before they could begin, that is.”

She sneers. “Did you figure that out all by yourself, or did you get your 'friends' to do the thinking for you too?”

its honestly a pretty good place, but soma sprung it up on us at the worst possible moment.
Especially since anons were getting tired of the mines.

I'm actually looking forward to this going on for years and years. Soma gets married, has kids, grows old and Mik ages like 10 years or 20 years every year. Then things speed up a bit and he ages 50 years per actual year.

This will be the epic masterpiece comparable to works of the greats of all time... Tolkien, Verne, Asimov, Wells, Clark...and now...Soma.

Brings a tear to my eye just thinking about a masterpiece that spans decades.

If we threaten her life right away, I can pretty much guarantee we are instantly in a fight. We now have 22/60 vys and in no position to fight her with whatever those artifacts are.

We could always just lie to the demirs, Take a bunch of their shit, then have the bunch all banished.
Our family gains more power, before their family gets shit on.
Then our family has more power to easily take over their lands with their own power. And when they're defamed with several family members banished. We could easily take over their lands with the shah's word for assassination attempt of the heir of our family and also makes our brother marriage look like shit. So there's that to the people who hate our shitty bro.

Letting this threat fester will only come back to bite you in the ass later. However, these aren't your lands. You don't really have any authority over them. Technically you gave up any claim to your family's lands or noble status when you became a Vatis. So, much as you'd like to simply shove her in your cloak and be done with it, you tuck the box back into your cloak and stand up, making your way towards the door.

Outside you find two guards standing stiffly at attention, and while keeping one eye on Malika you deliver your orders. “One of you fetch my brother and bring him here. The other guard the door and make sure none leave until my brother arrives. Understood?”

They both quickly touch their fingers to their chest and forehead, bowing slightly. A look is shared and then the one on your right, a lanky young man, rushes off down the hall to fetch your brother. You shut the door firmly and turn your attention fully back to Malika, rejoining her at the table. “You have four enchanted items on your person, one on each thigh, one near your navel, and another on your back. Set each of them flat against the table.”

She sighs melodramatically. “Very well, I'm not sure what you hope to accomplish by all this posturing.” Delving her hand into the folds of her dress she unties a string from around her abdomen, catching an old stone coin as it falls away from her. Is she not wearing anything underneath that dress?

You shake your head to banish such thoughts, focusing on the coin. It's carved with all manner of runes, contained within several overlapping arrays, and a curious bladed wheel design. On the reverse is a carved image of a snake-haired woman and some symbols and two more runes you don't recognize. You pick out air, repeated several times over, but other than that it's all a bit dense for you.

Sliding her hand down to her thigh she frees what appears to be nothing more than a stick of wood with a handle from a sheathe hidden underneath the folds of cloth. It looks like it might have been a dagger, or something of that sort, but you can't easily glean its purpose. It is covered in dozens of runes, just like the coin. But not at all evenly distributed. Most of them are arrayed near the handle, while the 'blade', if you can really call it that, is left bare.

From her other thigh she grabs a serpentine dagger with a ornate hilt shaped to resemble two intertwined snakes, their heads flaring out to form the guard. It's a rather ominous looking weapon, and after sliding it out to show you she forces it back into its sheath and sets it on the table. She could easily excuse it as a weapon intended for self defense, you wouldn't be surprised if every noble at the party was carrying at least a knife, but it's still suspicious given the circumstances.

Finally, from her back she pulls out a small lump of rock, glowing script wrapping around it in bands. Within you can see the barest glimpse of a gemstone, but the material itself is more interesting. It's almost fleshy, the way it seems to yield underneath her fingers. She displays it to you briefly, then lets it fall into the palm of her hand and gives it a slight squeeze before setting it down on the table.

Well we should definitely try and get something out of it like, letting the younger generation off for 50% of their business. Before even bringing up the issue to the shah. You grip the edge of your cloak and throw it over the table, but pause as you reach the fleshy bulb of the last enchanted item. She's done something to it, the glowing text which had been covering its surface has vanished, replaced by dull indents corresponding to where the letters once were. You finish sweeping your cloak across the table but this woman is really starting to irritate you.

You clap your hands together, leaning forward. “So, Malika, care to share with me what you just did by activating that artifact?”

She smiles sweetly. “I reasoned that if I were to eliminate your primary witnesses I would stand a better chance defending myself against any allegations you might level. The pendant will have stopped their hearts, assuming what my Vatis told me is correct of course. Perhaps, were you to hurry to the cells beneath the palace, you might still revive them.”

It's obvious bait, she's trying to lure you into fleeing the room to rescue the slaves so she can make an escape attempt. For all you know, the slaves aren't even in any real danger and she's merely bluffing. Still, is that a risk you want to take? She's right, without the slaves and without their confessions it's your word against hers, and that's not exactly an easy case to win. Sure you've a plethora of connections in government, but the Demirs are a powerful family in their own right. The Shah might not want to risk offending them and thus destabilizing the contested lands.

Maybe you could get one of your companions to see to it for you? Darzi is the next most talented Water Vatis after yourself, with Chryssa and Mortia following behind her. Zahak also has some skill with Water magic, though you're not sure if he could actually squeeze through the halls and into the dungeons below the palace. Unfortunately, you're not sure whether or not Darzi's talent will be enough to completely restart someone's heart.

It's at times like these that you wish you were just a little more skilled in Nature magic, you'd be able to heal the slaves without even lifting a finger.

You said Samjan have more idvine 'weight', which is why they're better at manipulating magic. I think you said why, but I don't remember - was it because Pani took an interest in them, or..

And doesn't that imply that Dwarves are all serious mages?
>>
>>43958545
Iirc, it's because samjans were made stronger by some spirit mumbo jumbo to kill off some of there enemies
>>
>>43958545
It's because the series of runic arrays and enchantments required to make a Samjan "work" on a metaphysical level are more numerous and more complex than those required to make either Elves or Humans work, largely because of the Gods' fiddling. Dragons and Voibardians, as the original creations of the gods (although the Voibardians at least seem quite weakened compared to their historic might), would have even more "weight" than Samjan.

Originally Samjan and Elves were equal and humans were simpler than both because, though something was gained by the combination of Elven and Voibardian (though they weren't called Voibardians at the time) traits, something was lost as well.

Nah, Elves were made by Dragons both to insult Voibardians (because at the time, Voibardians were the only creatures walking on two legs) and to serve them as slaves. Then tribes of elves split off and escaped their draconic overlords and from them both Samjan and Humans are descended.

According to Soma Var is about 3-5 MP. So as Mike counts for 1 MP with a vys pool of 60. Var should have around 300-500 vys.
>>
>>43958950
Both maybe.

He WAS a Divyath Fyr expy - and Divyath Fyr could pick fights with Gods without too many serious issues, if he had a few minutes to put on his murdering pants.
>>43959014
Okay, I've missed something. MP? Enchanting soul weight?
>>
>>43958873
Crusty would just give us less points when we hit T3 if we did that
>>
>>43959014
I don't think that's really a good metric. Something with no magic at all can be measured in MP.

>>43959035
It's a measurement of how effective something is in mass combat. 1 MP is some group of soldiers. Can't remember how big, I think it was like a hundred or something.
>>
>>43959054
Ah, that's right. And a dragon was something like 14, the rough strength of a full blown army. Zahak was 2. Thanks.
>>
>>43959014
Was Mik confirmed for 1 MP? I thought he wasn't quite there yet
>>
>>43959054
100 soldiers per MP.
>>
>>43959072
With preparation time he is 1 MP. That's why I added in the extra 200 vys range.
>>
>>43959099
Yeah, that makes sense. Mik with an army of golems is definitely a military force
>>
>>43959014
>>43958935
Word of Soma is Varvar had several thousand vys.

Think about it; he was 1000 years old. If he only gained 2 vys per year (snail pace), he would be at 2000 vys. And Varvar most certainly did not gain only 2 vys per year, even if he did slow down over the years.

For further reference, Master has several hundred available.

And, depending on his mood and insanity level, natural surroundings and the races nearby, a walking natural disaster.

God. That'd be a fun ending. Mik manages to unlock his self improvement ability. He goes utterly mad. Noone can kill him. Whatever region he is in turns into a wasteland inhabited by a mad godling. Like geb from Shadowquest.
>>
>>43959144
When was it stated that we gain vys per year? I only remember Soma stating the way to raise our pool was through reading books and breaking ranks in magic or similar stuff.
>>
>>43959161
And then ricky eats him, and the skeletrio gives him a gold star.
>>
>>43959160
Most likely, yes.
>>
>>43959161
The self improvement ability is most likely related to the shaping art

Soma straight up said experimenting is the best way to improve our magic>>43959226
>>
>>43959182
Shaping is rewriting other enchantments.
>>
>>43959144
If that's so how much vys did time metamagic cost if that old Samjan could only stop time for a few seconds.
>>
>>43959144
My impression is that vys does not automatically accrue over time and is not increased in a linear fashion. It is kind of like a stock market chart that generally goes up but has some flat areas for periods of time. May even go down in extreme circumstances for brief periods.

That said, with Mik at 60 and being very young, he may be well ahead of the vys accumulation curve. That vys curve probably slows down as a Vatis ages like many things do as we age.

Still think he was in that 1000 range.
>>
>>43959241
Is that something Soma actually said because if so that would be amazing.
>>
>>43959263
Nigger, he's not saying it accumulates over time. He's saying that the Varisth-whatever is not going to be sitting around going "Well, I've learned enough magic for my life". he's going to be experimenting, fucking around and generally working out how things work.
>>43959287
Nope. Guessing. The way dragons made elves, basically.
>>
Do Vatis show increased signs of insanity compared to non-vatis in normal conditions? If so it may be due to the enlarged vys pool which exists as vys is a by product of the soul.
>>
>>43959233
Who are you quoting?
>>
>>43959296
Well shaping arts from what we know are a special magic that focuses on manipulating the body, mind, and soul.
>>
>>43959307
Misclicked.
>>
>>43959263
Anon, I didn't make any of that up. Soma literally stated, word for word, that Varvar had several thousand vys.

And as >>43959296 said, I never implied that vys accrued in any sort of automatic manner, but that Varvar was actively improving himself over the years, just as we are currently doing. That's how all vatis increase their vys pool.

You reach out via the brooches to Darzi and Chryssa, their thoughts merging into an incomprehensible slurry as you force your own through the tenuous connections created by your brooches. {Malika has admitted her culpability but she's trying to weasel her way out of trouble. She's activated an artifact which she claims will kill the two slaves we captured by stopping their hearts. I need the two of you to get to the cells quickly and make sure that doesn't happen.}

You get a vague sense of confirmation from Chryssa before the connection is severed, but Darzi's thoughts are tinged with confusion. {Isn't this more a job for Fulvia? I'm not nearly as skilled in Water magic as you are, but with Fulvia's enormous reserves she can just force them to keep living by charging them with Vys.}

Pani's tits, how could you have forgotten? You had to rely on that ability yourself when she brought the Shah back from the cusp of death. {You're right, Darzi. Get down there just in case, I recall it takes a lot out of her, but I'll contact Fulvia and make sure she's there to do the heavy lifting.}

You sever the connection and open another, this time your mind brushing lightly against the vast, alien entity that is Fulvia's core. {I need you to get down to the cells underneath the palace and revive the two slaves we captured earlier. They're valuable witnesses and Malika is attempting to kill them both.}

Her response is brief and professional, as expected of your artificial companion. {Yes, Dux. I will see it done.} That's all she says before you feel that strange presence recede. The connection isn't truly severed, just allowed to fall dormant. You must admit, it's a little unsettling that Fulvia is simply apart of the brooch network. Everything said on it, she hears.

With that situation under control you turn your attention back to Malika, nodding your head gratefully. “Thanks for informing me, my companions will be handling the issue.”

That wipes the smug look off her face. “What? How? You haven't moved an inch since I told you!”

There's a knock on the door, and you rise. Brushing out your robes you make your way towards the door, pausing only briefly to turn your attention back to your captive. “What, you thought you were the only one equipped with all manner of convenient artifacts? I'm never outside of communication with my party. Can't tell you how many times that simple fact has saved my ass now.”

You pull the door open and find your brother standing on the other end, looking far more composed than the last time you saw him. Leaning forward you lower your voice so Malika can't hear. “This is important, you can't afford to get emotional over what I'm about to tell you. Are you okay?”

Something in your tone must have impressed upon him the severity of the situation. After a deep breath, he nods his head confidently. Over the next several minutes, in whispered conversation, you explain to him what you know of Malika and her plot to see him dead, of her army camped outside the city and the officers she brought with her. You tell him everything, up to and including her potentially, unlikely as it may be, successful attempt to kill the two prime witnesses to her wrongdoing.

At the end you allow him a moment to collect his thoughts before offering your own advice. “If I were you, I'd confine her and her officers to a cell and bring formal accusations against her and her accomplices to the Shah. I have friends amongst his administration, I can pull some strings to make sure you enter a trial already with the advantage. That being said, I leave the decision ultimately in your hands.”

Zaahir looks past you, to the matronly woman seated primly at the table behind you, sipping tea as if all is right with the world. After a time he speaks calmly and quietly, but you know your brother well enough to know that tone hides a black rage. “Allow me to speak with her, dear brother. I will make my decision afterwards.”

Your brother, though not especially tall, is a large man. Far more impressive physically than you are. He moves to push you aside, but stops himself. Zaahir closes his eyes, and takes a calming breath, before addressing you once more. “And I don't wish to seem ungrateful, you've earned my eternal gratitude for what you've done today. You and your friends both. It's clear that were it not for you, I wouldn't be here.”

With that he steps past you, towards the woman. A gesture calls his guards inside with him, all five of them. You wonder just what it is he plans, but you find yourself being ushered outside by a guard. As the door shuts, behind you, you wonder whether you've made the right decision by calling your brother to judge.

Fully stopping time as he did costs a shitton. He definitely could have sustained it much longer, but he probably didn't want to deplete his Vys reserves unnecessarily.

I suspect that at his age and vys capacity, it takes more than just 1 night of sleep to fully recharge his entire possible pool of vys. At a certain extreme point of vys pool size, your vys is only limited by how fast you can regenerate it when you sleep/meditate. And he probably preferred to stay topped off whenever possible for emergencies. (Such as massive void portals opening)
