you could have returned home

regrouped with that which devours and gotten information from it

this is what you could have done

the intelligent thing to do

but instead you sneak off to cavort with the weed who you so lust after

I will never understand your priorities

Taking a seat on Charlotte's massive king-size bed, I try my best not to be too obvious in my admiration of the sight of Charlotte in her underwear as she walks over to the dresser.

"You don't have to wait for me to get done here, you know," Charlotte says as she picks her phone up from where I left it. "I'll get back to you after I call back home."
"It's fine," I reply, shaking my head. "Just pretend like I'm not here."

I'm also just a little bit exhausted from all the exertion I've done today (both good and bad) but I think I'll keep that to myself.

While keeping my mouth shut so as to not interrupt, I watch Charlotte pace around the room while she talks to who I'm assuming is her father about our little afternoon adventure. She tells him all about the propellant, the fire, the calling card that I found... pretty much everything aside from Theresa being the entire reason we were out there to start with.

I guess she'd be thankful for that.

And though it's kind of hard to keep up with things since I'm only able to hear one side of the conversation, Charlotte's increasingly concerned expression as the phonecall progresses is enough of a clue that she's not being told anything particularly pleasant.

"Alright, thanks," Charlotte says with a tired sigh. "I love you too."

Our eyes meet and she starts blushing.

"N- no, I wasn't hesitant to say it," Charlotte stammers. "What does Cecile being here have to do with- would you PLEASE not make jokes like that!?"

By the time Charlotte's finished with her phonecall, her face is as red as I've ever seen it.

"Ugh..." Charlotte lowers her phone.
"You alright?" I ask.
"Yeah," she sighs, "I'd just forgotten how he can get sometimes, that's all."

One day I will meet this man and learn all of his Charlotte-teasing secrets.

"I'm surprised you didn't try and follow it up yourself," Charlotte mutters under her breath.
"I was -trying- to be nice but if you really want me to tease you then I guess I could always try..."

For that, I am rewarded with a pillow thrown at my face with enough force to completely knock me over.

"You're lucky this bed's so soft or I might actually be mad," I say. "Especially since I didn't actually -do- anything."
"S- sorry!" Charlotte says, hurrying over to the bed. "He just had me all frazzled so I..."

Charlotte then takes my hand and pulls me back upright.

"Yeah yeah," I sigh. "YOu're forgiven."

Because I just got another eyeful.

"So what exactly did your father tell you about this guy?" I ask. "Does he know him?"
"Umm, yeah..." Charlotte's expression darkens. "Mr. Gauthier doesn't really take talk of arson very lightly so I got an earful before he actually gave me any information."

>[2/?]

>>43922810
>[3/3]

"But I guess Mr. Gauthier knew a lot about this guy just off the top of his head," Charlotte says with a shrug. "Since he's known to rob rich businessmen blind and all."
"Since you father just so happens to -be- a rich businessman?"
"Exactly that," she replies.

Charlotte begins gathering up her clothes that I kind of threw all over the place while she continues her explanation.

"The so-called phantom thief 'Faceless," Charlotte says as she slides her dress back on. "Real name and age are unknown."
"Of course they would be," I roll my eyes.
"He first became active around seven years ago in New York City and then from there his exploits spread throughout the world... always leaves a calling card to taunt the people he robs and there are even a few instances where he even called his targets to warn them in advance."

"This guy sounds like some asshole who's seen too many anime," I say. "Printing out calling cards and all that... it's way too showoffy. Like he's asking to get caught."
"I put it better than I could have," Charlotte nods. "He taunts people to just -try- and catch him... and he's actually lost a few times in that regard."
"Huh?"
"He's been caught," she says. "More than once."
"......then how the hell's he out there setting everything on fire?"

Even ignoring my slightly murderous tendencies that I'm finding less and less fault with as time goes on, that still doesn't sound right.

"Well like Theresa said, this 'Faceless' is also a Branch holder," Charlotte says.
"Oh yeah," I mumble, "the whole 'walks-through-walls' thing."
"It's called 'Planes Drifter,'" Charlotte says. "As far as Mr. Gauthier's information can tell, he's able to pass through any flat surface like it wasn't even there."
"Like a ghost."
"More or less," she shrugs.

"So he's been going around robbing people and setting everything on fire and then when someone's actually able to catch him he just walks through the walls and escapes?" I ask.
"That's what happened on the -two- separate occasions that the Tree of Life was able to capture him," she replies, holding up two fingers for added emphasis. "my father's tried to get more information from them just in case there's something there that isn't public knowledge, but what I've just told you is pretty much all he knows about this guy."

"So the Tree of Life knows more about this guy than your father does?" I ask.
"Well they've directly interacted so I'd assume so," Charlotte replies. "All of Mr. Gauthier's information is second-hand at best."
"Hm."

A certain houseguest of mine comes to mind.

"Maybe we could try to get some more information from Irene?" I ask.

I dunno how high her clearance level is (or even if they have those in the Tree of Life) but she's at least an "in" when it comes to that group.

"Why am I not surprised," Charlotte groans at the mention of her name.
"What," I shrug, "I think it's a good idea."
"As long as you make sure not to out Theresa's little hobby to her in the process," she replies while rolling her eyes.

"Yeah, yeah..." I grumble while rummaging through my pile of clothes. "I put too much work into getting them together to screw things up now."
"I'd certainly hope so," Charlotte replies.

While Charlotte finishes getting dressed, I pull up Irene's name in my contact list and give her a ring.

"Hello?" Irene calls out, answering on the first ring just like always. "Cecile?"
"Hey, I reply.
"How are things with you?" she asks, as cheerful as ever. "Allison said that you were going to be spending the night at Charlotte's place?"
"Umm, no," I sigh, "I'm just visiting."
"Oh, okay. Allison and your parents should be back soonish so I'll make sure to tell them that."
"Thanks."

"Umm, is Theresa with you?" I ask.
"No," Irene replies, "she left a little while before everyone else did. Right now I'm home alone."

I guess it really would've been safe to fool around at home after all.

"Why, did you need something from her?" Irene asks.
"No, just wondering," I shake my head. "But there was something that I wanted to ask you about..."
"Well go ahead," she replies.

No sense in dragging it out any longer.

"Umm, have you heard of a guy called 'Faceless?'" I ask.

The line goes quiet for a good long while.

"Cecile, where did you hear that name?" Irene asks, her voice devoid of its usual peppiness.

"Oh God damn it," Irene groans. "Of all the luck."

"My sister was involved in the first operation to capture him," Irene says. "At great personal cost."
"Wow."
"We had him in custody for maybe a day after that... he was in chains and in a cell with grate walls and the only smooth surfaces in there were rounded. And he STILL got out."
"Umm, how?"
"Apparently the flat surface formed by taking off his clothes was enough for him to slip through," she replies.
"He picked the locks to his chains too?"
"No, they pulled them through with him and used his Branch to cut their connection to the cell once his body was clear."

Wow.

"We thought we had him dead to rights the second time," Irene says. "No provided clothing but a pair of briefs."
"How'd he escape that time?" I ask.
"He smeared his own waste along a wall and used that as an escape window."

I think I'm going to be sick.

>[2/?]
>>
>>43924745
So… Put him on a grate? Or suspend him in the air? Keep him sedated or in an artificial coma? Use one of the many branches that can force someone to do something to keep him from escaping?

Do flat surfaces work like portals or can he simply use them to come out on the other site of whatever he moves through?
>>
>>43924782
Sounds like sedation or branch-related shenanigans would be needed to hold him down.
>>
>>43924745
>[3/3]

"Why not just keep him drugged up or something?" I ask. "If he's that hard to keep contained."
"Well he's never killed anyone or even harmed anyone outside of self-defense so the general sentiment was to try and be somewhat reasonable," Irene replies. "I doubt he'll get a third chance though..."

Irene lets out a long, exasperated groan.

"Just when things are looking up..." she sighs. "If you're right that this -is- Faceless, I'm probably going to have to call it in..."

Huh? Call it in? But then they'll know that she's here and her sister'll probably make her leave and then she'll have to break up with Theresa...

"No, don't do that," I say.
"I don't think I really have a choice if it turns out that Charlotte's right about it being Faceless that's behind those incidents you were talking about," Irene replies. "I mean, the entire purpose of the Tree of Life is to protect people from Branch holders who would abuse their powers like he obviously is."
"W- well what if we take care of it first?" I ask. "Then you won't have anty reason to give yourself away!"
"I really don't feel comfortable about you going......"

Charlotte pulls the phone away from my hand.

"I have the scent," she says, her eyes looking right through me.
"Eh?" I glance at my phone and then at her.
"The propellant that we found at the mansion," she says. "Some rats got back to one of the ones that I'm controlling and they're leading me there now."

What horrible timing.

"We can leave it alone if you want," Charlotte says, "but if we leave right now we might be able to catch this guy before he sets anything else on fire."

>how do I respond?
>>
>>43924931

>>
>>43924931

>>43924931
>>how do I respond?
And how would we imprison him?

I suggest either a ruse (Just like right now, CC called Irene on the telephone. Don’t mention that Irene is in the city, telephones work across nations.)

Or we take care of this together and keep watch in turns. His branch isn’t really combat oriented, so being suspended by Mina’s armor, being threatened by an invisible Theresa (he’ll never know if she is there or not and after failing to escape he will probably be extremely cautious even if no one is around) or being threatened by any single other one should be enough to keep him from escaping.
>>
Sleep is calling to me HARD so I'm going to have to shelve my original plans and end this thread here. With any luck, we'll be able to get to the end of the in-game day in the next thread.

>Have you tried that story I recommended long ago? (About a stone spirit and a god falling in love)
I read the first chapter and then lost the link.

>What is CCs effective range in a fight right now?
Cecile's lasers can travel quite a long ways before they dissipate.
But as "things that should not exist," her light swords and flower shield have a range of maybe the length of a house before they're too difficult to maintain. The same goes for her light illusions.

>How far can she use her lasers without losing a lot a of energy or missing?
Lasers are a thing that exists on their own so Cecile doesn't have to maintain them while they're being fired. They're strictly a point-and-shoot deal.
As far as aim goes, it varies.
