You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, and your morning has been all but ruined by the unexpected death of fellow Captain Aizen Sōsuke.

The man, who you've considered your enemy ever since his experiments into hollowfication afflicted both yourself and your now-wife Shihōin Yoruichi with the dangerous condition, seems to have been killed overnight under unknown circumstances. The Lieutenants of the Gotei 13, barring Iba and Kotetsu whom you've sent in search of specialists to help handle the unfolding situation, talk among themselves. Lieutenant Hinamori is quietly sobbing at this point, having been unusually attached to Aizen. She's stated that she blames you for the murder, and has revealed to the other Lieutenants that you were a Sternritter in your past life.

“It's true,” you mutter to Rangiku as she kneels next to you, “this could very well be the result of a Heilig Pfiel. In fact, I'm almost certain it is. But to my knowledge no quincy alive could do this to Aizen without anyone else realizing it.”

“I can't see me going that quietly,” your daughter agrees quietly. “And Aizen was supposedly stronger than me? I don't buy it.”

You shake your head as you rise to your feet. “We'll see what the examination reveals. When Unohana comes back and tells me that Aizen's dead, I'll believe it.”

Now, the question remains: how do you address what Hinamori has revealed to the Lieutenants? At the time you brushed her off rather than trying to deny it, and so it must already seem to their minds that it's true. But you haven't even considered that an issue yourself for more than a century, or perhaps ever given the fact that the one who killed Rosa is now your wife. If you had ever held a grudge from back then, something like that could never have happened.

In fact, you might not even have lived this long.

Wouldn't a Heilig Pfiel also be rather flashy?

There should be witness's who saw an arrow of light like that striking someone.

Let along one capable of killing a captain in one shot, it should have pulled material from soul society from the location of the shot likely?

You glance at Lieutenants Kano and Sasakibe, who have been almost completely silent through the whole affair so far. You can tell by Chōjirō's expression that the suggestion that one of the current generations of Captains was a quincy in her past life has unsettled him, but he doesn't seem to look at you with any malice. In fact both men seem to be awaiting an explanation on your part, which only serves to drive home the realization that you need to address Hinamori's declarations rather than continue ignoring them.

Though it seems like chickenshit to you, normal people may consider it of vital importance.

“The records of who I was an how I died are publicly available,” you announce, glancing around at the Lieutenants as they seem to listen intently. “My name was Rosa Rosette, and I was a Sternritter. But before you rush to judgment, consider a few points: the first of which is that other Captains have known for centuries. Captain Unohana and Executive Commander Shihōin recognized me before I even officially joined the Onmitsukidō, they just don't talk about it. And since Unohana knows, you can be sure that the Head Captain has been informed even if he couldn't tell that I still instinctively use quincy techniques like blut and hirenkyaku. And yet, I was promoted to Captain in spite of this.”

“More importantly,” you continue, “Lady Yoruichi was the one who ended my life in the first place... and now she's my dearest friend. I hold no grudges from when I was a different person.”

“But you and Captain Aizen...” Hinamori protests, only for you to cut her off.

“Had an old disagreement. But I wouldn't take any action against him without a reason and evidence to back it up,” you point out. “I was Onmitsukidō for ninety years. I wouldn't act on a personal dispute, and I wouldn't leave incriminating evidence behind.”

Well, the source of disagreement between Aizen and Riku could likely be traced back to WW1.

If people don't know the true source.

Riku would be very annoyed by how incompetent he managed his division on the Western Front. He suffered route level casualties. 9th division fought longer, even fought a Vasto Lord and suffered a much lower casualty rate, with many of them still returning to serve again.

Since then both have been antagonizing each other.

You can tell from her expression that Hinamori still refuses to believe you, even if she won't say it. In her mind you've already been judged and sentenced, and nothing you say will change her mind. She held Aizen and his word too highly to admit the possibility that he's led her astray. It's also apparent that the fact that your words seem to be convincing her fellow Lieutenants has isolated her from them: particularly Rangiku, who she no doubt sees as “your” Lieutenant. Her guilt is one of simple association.

She will try to take things into her own hands at this rate, you realize. It's only a matter of how and when.

“What's going on here?” a new voice demands.

You turn to see Captain Hitsugaya, whose eyes widen at the grisly scene of Aizen's death.

“Captain,” you nod sternly. “As you can see there's been an... incident.”

“That's an understatement,” Hitsugaya retorts, his eyes lingering on Aizen. “Was he found this way?”

“After the meeting, sir,” Ashido explains. “We were on our way out. It must have happened overnight.”

“Why hasn't he been properly seen to?” the young Captain demands.

“Lieutenant Kotetsu is bringing a detail from Fourth, and Iba is bringing my specialists,” you tell Hitsugaya. “I'll have them treat it as a primary crime scene, but given Lieutenant Hinamori's earlier outburst I don't know how much we'll learn.”

>Have Hitsugaya take Hinamori back to Third Division headquarters.
>Have Rangiku place Hinamori under arrest. She's attacked a Captain, that's a serious offense.

Hitsugaya finally turns to face you, his expression stern but otherwise unreadable. “Captain Kusajishi, I thank you for your restraint. It's saved me a lot of trouble.”

“Oh?” you ask, cocking an eyebrow. It's honestly a little hard to figure out what this kid's thinking some times. Too bad he didn't pick up Isshin's more relaxed attitude, then maybe he'd be more fun to be around. Less effective at his job perhaps, but interesting.

“Yes,” he nods. “If you'd hurt Lieutenant Hinamori, I'd have had to kill you.”

Ah, you'd figured there was something there. Rangiku frowns, and seems like she's about to tell Captain Hitsugaya off for speaking to you like that, but you motion for her to stop. Grudgingly, she obeys.

“You should keep an eye on her yourself, then. In her current state, there's no telling what she may try to do,” you tell the young Captain.

Hitsugaya's expression darkens into a scowl. “Thanks for the advice, Captain.”

“That's honest advice, Hitsugaya,” you insist. “There's nothing sinister to it, I just don't want her in my hair during the investigation. She's already ruined one crime scene.”

“... I'll keep that in mind,” he replies, his expression seeming to soften as he realizes that your priorities are in figuring out the situation, and not in punishing his friend.

Hinamori seems distraught again as Hitsugaya begins to lead her away from the crime scene. “Shiro, that woman killed him...”

“Even if I believed that,” Hitsugaya interrupts, “there's no evidence for it. You've attacked a Captain for personal reasons Momo. I'm surprised she hasn't already had you arrested.”

“I'll let Ichimaru sort you out. Let's go.”

Hinamori tries to protest, but Hitsugaya grips her arm tightly and stares her dead in the eye.

“That's an order, Lieutenant.”

"You feel something, Kai?" Mirai asks, looking around her.

Kai scratches his head. "Thought I did. Feels almost like someone's tryin' to be sneaky an' failin', don't it?"

"That was the feeling I got, yes," Mirai agrees. "In all likelihood, it would be an invader... perhaps two."

"They're close?" Kai mutters to himself. "Didn't think we'd find 'em so quick. You wanna divert an' take a look?"

"Patrol action is so boring," Mirai admits. "So why not? Perhaps it actually is them..."

To be fair to Tosen he has some very troublesome abilities for opponents who are straight up fighters. Our other abilities would negate alot of his advantages (y'know other than us being way more powerful than him) but to another captain it might be difficult. That said I feel he is perceived as a jobber but it was just a bad matchup that he ran afoul of captain murderface. In-fact given how bullshit op Kenny is in the series its kinda crazy how ichigo beat him, even if this was before kenny got even more op.

After a few minutes you manage to track Yoruichi down, finding her seated quietly on a rooftop near the Onmitsukidō headquarters grooming herself.

“That never looks less weird,” you comment, watching as she lowers her leg.

She stares at you calmly. “Why is it an issue? I'm a cat, Riku. Cats do this all the time.”

“Yeah, but you're not a real cat.”

Yoruichi pins her ears back at you playfully. “I don't like what you're implying.”

“Aizen is dead,” you tell her.

She sighs heavily, staring out at the Sōkyoku hill. “That certainly complicates things. Are you sure it was him?”

“I saw no evidence that it wasn't,” you admit, “but I'm waiting to hear from Unohana. Until then we need to proceed like either case could be true. An incorrect assumption here could be fatal.”

“I'll fetch our special package from Gin Tonbo out of my quarters,” Yoruichi tells you, standing and brushing against your leg. “We may need it soon.”

“Agreed,” you nod. “I'll deal with the other Captains for now.”

After Yoruichi leaves for her quarters, a black cat dashing across the rooftops at blinding speeds, Rangiku calls you on your pager. You press the earpiece, waiting for her to explain what else has gone wrong so far this morning.

“There's a Captain's meeting,” she reports, confirming your suspicions. “You called it, mom.”

At the same time, however, you get the feeling that two of your Commandos have hidden their reiatsu... they may be onto something at this very moment. You can't be sure with how many false alarms there have been in the last twenty-four hours or so.

“You alive over there, Kai?” Mirai asks aloud, sitting up suddenly from where she's been laying.

Kai doesn't even bother. “I was enjoyin' that. But yeah, I'm fine when you are.”

“We have to take these two more seriously,” the sickly-looking girl replies. “I was hoping we would not have to resort to kidō to hide, but that Ishida boy has better senses than we gave him credit for.”

“Yeah, I was hopin' to tail 'em a while longer myself,” Kai agrees. “But I guess we can call that one a mulligan?”

“They seemed to think they had beaten us,” Mirai observes, “despite the fact that neither of us even released our swords. We could easily catch up with them and observe them further. They may have good instincts, but they seem to sorely lack experience.”

“Let's do it then,” Kai mutters, hauling himself back up onto his feet. “We gotta get somethin' better to report to Riku than 'we kicked their asses', after all. That's not too enlightening.”

You quickly call Rangiku, reporting that the Commandos may have engaged two of the 'invaders' and asking her to check in on their progress. She acknowledges your orders, and informs you that she's done reporting to the Fourth Division as well as to your own forensics team.

The scene awaiting you at the Captains' meeting is a rather serious one. The Captains who have already arrived look at you with a strange mixture of distrust and concern, having apparently heard about the morning's drama from their respective Lieutenants.

“Captain Ukitake!” you greet the white-haired man warmly. “Good to see you're on your feet again.”

“I heard I was needed,” he bows gently, an almost nervous smile on his lips. “So I decided it was a bad time to be bedridden. Are you... you know. Okay?”

“Fine,” you sigh, brushing idly at your hair. “Things are getting far too serious for my preferences, though.”

After the last surviving Captains arrives, the Head Captain quickly calls the meeting to order.

“As you are all aware,” Yamamoto growls, “Captain Aizen was reported dead this morning. Captain Unohana, have there been any reports from the autopsy?”

Retsu bows formally. “Only initial results. We have confirmed that the cause of death was massive trauma to the chest cavity, most likely by a projectile made from reishi. Captain Aizen would have been killed instantly.”

“What is slowing down the full results?” Komamura presses gruffly.

Your fellow Captain turns to face her interrogator. “We are making final confirmations. So far there are no irregularities, but given the circumstances we wished to determine all of the factors beyond reasonable doubt.”

“And it IS Aizen?” Gin asks thoughtfully. “Certainly that must have been the first thing you would confirm?”

“There are no inconsistencies between the body and Aizen's medical records,” Captain Unohana explains. “So far as I am concerned, Captain Aizen is indeed deceased.”

“I was under the impression that the invaders were no threat?” Tōsen scowls, the comment clearly aimed at you.

“There's no evidence they were even involved,” you frown, shooting Tōsen a glare, “and considering the fact that the scene itself was so spoiled by the actions of a certain Lieutenant that we may not get any evidence, suggesting that they were is irresponsible, Captain Tōsen.”

“Captain Kusajishi has a point,” Unohana agrees softly. 'We cannot allow fervor to guide judgments which should be made with reason.”

Byakuya sighs, catching your attention. “My Lieutenant suffered a similar injury in combat with Kurosaki Ichigo, one of the invaders. It led to his defeat.”

“And you didn't share that information sooner?” Jūshirō exclaims, disbelief apparent in his voice. “Captain Kuchiki, I'm surprised you didn't report that to the Ninth Division immediately!”

“That would be the usual protocol,” Suì Fēng agrees. “I assume the Captain had a good reason for withholding such a key detail?”

“I did,” Byakuya nods sternly. “Lieutenant Abarai was left on death's doorstep by Kurosaki Ichigo's final attack. We only just took a statement from him early this morning.”

“Still,” you insist, “if you thought he had been wounded so severely under suspicious circumstances you should have informed me sooner. By now it could be too late to do a detailed survey of the scene.”

>Demand to know the coordinates so you can send a team.
>Ask if Byakuya's subordinates took any records from the scene. Maybe you can prove Ichigo's innocence that way.

The invaders were barely prepared, entered in a majorly flashy way, and don't seem strong enough to give a captain a challenge if said captain was serious. Someone could be using them as a diversion.
>>

>>Ask if Byakuya's subordinates took any records from the scene. Maybe you can prove Ichigo's innocence that way.

Do we know how Renji did? It is a major step up to go from barely beating a Lt, to one shotting a captain.

If the enemy was badly hurt beforehand, and then in the middle of the night can assassinate a captain seems quite a stretch.

>Suggest there may be something else happening here (An attack lethal enough to kill a Captain in a single blow was launched and nobody sensed anything? Not even Tosen?)

Ask if Renji said anything about the level of power Kurosaki Ichigo and if it was somewhat equal to his. Also ask if Renji had unlocked his Bankai yet.

Even if they buy that Ichigo was able to take down Renji there is no way they would believe that if he was anywhere near equal to Renji when just using his Shikai that they would believe that Ichigo could take down a captain that has access to his Bankai.

The level of power between captain and Lieutenant is quite steep if said Lieutenant doesn't have their Bankai.

What we have here is a murder in which the method used was so discrete that it went unnoticed even by us. The Invaders on the other hand seemed unable to pull off that sort of stunt. And even if they did attempt to act discrete, any actions they took often drew attention such as what happened to Lieutenant Renji.
This leads to two possible conclusions: One, the murderer is at a level on par or above us captain class shimigami and has a capability to take us out discretely without the others knowing, which none of the Invaders have the strength to do so without attracting notice. Or Two, Aizen's Death is a false positive, which means that the real Aizen is still alive and means that there is something bigger afoot.
>>
>>43873818
So your saying that the person Rukia gave her powers to somehow has the capability to beat an LT? What a shocking coincidence. I wonder what the odds of that happening without somebody deliberately setting that up.

“I assume your subordinates at least managed to report on the scene itself?” you ask Byakuya, your tone growing increasingly impatient.

Byakuya scowls at your implied meaning. “There was a not insubstantial amount of damage to the surroundings. It will require significant repair.”

“So there was a close fight?” you press.

After a moment of thought, Captain Kuchiki nods in agreement. “I suppose that is not inaccurate.”

“So this Kurosaki boy struggled against Abarai, presumably taking injuries,” you hypothesize, “and later that night manages to assassinate a Captain? Use your head, Byakuya. That makes no damn sense and you know it.”

“And the other kids?” Gin asks. He spins the question as sincere, but you can tell that he's setting you up.

“They've been reported in different areas of the Seireitei entirely,” you explain. “All accounted for. Not one of them was within a day's travel of the First Division barracks... unless you're thinking they're as fast as I am.”

“Something else is going on here,” you conclude. “Someone's using this invasion as a smokescreen.”

After several long moments of silence, Shunsui speaks up. “I guess that fits the evidence. But what could be going on that requires Aizen's death?”

You share a knowing look with the Head Captain. “That's why I asked you to help me capture these invaders, my dear Shunsui. Otherwise we'd be fumbling around like a bunch of blind men”

Tōsen remains silent, having apparently sensed that he's fighting a losing battle.

“There any reason I shouldn't return to my job now?” you sigh, somewhat irritated at all these meetings taking up your time. “There are invaders to capture, and a murder mystery to solve.”

“There is one issue,” Komamura replies sternly. “Captain Kusajishi, is what I heard true? Were you truly a Sternritter?”

“I was,” you reply, already turning to leave the room. “I'm not anymore.”

“Is it possible that you could be covering for a quincy invader's involvement?” the large Captain replies, no variation in his tone.

You don't even bother to turn, instead stopping in place. “Thin ice, Captain,” you growl dangerously. “Concern is one thing. Insinuation is another.”

“My apologies, Captain,” Komamura replies.

Leaving the First Division meeting hall, you place a call to your Lieutenant. “I still work with a bunch of morons,” you groan. “How are things on your end?”

“Kai and Mirai have split,” she replies. “The former is chasing down the quincy, and Mirai is chasing down the girl.”

“I hope I made the right decision,” Ishida mutters, back to a low wall and panting heavily. It had been a narrow escape, but by splitting up with Tatsuki it seems like each of them can now engage an opponent better suited to their own skillset.

A voice rings out from somewhere amidst the plain, pale, rectangular buildings. “Surprised to see a shinigami fightin' with a gun, right? Don't worry, boy. My Kamitinbe's pretty unique.”

“Just my luck!” Ishida retorts loudly, trying to prolong the conversation to figure out where the voice is coming from. “I always draw the chatty ones. The last shinigami I faced wouldn't shut up either.”

A shot cracks the stone next to him, shattering the young quincy's cover. Damn, this shinigami is in a different league altogether from Ikkanzaka. Trying to play his game may not work.

Running across the rooftops as quickly as his hirenkyaku can carry him, Ishida fires a volley of arrows in the direction he thinks his enemy is in. Each has sufficient power to take chunks out of the buildings the two shooters are skulking between for cover.

A second shot nearly takes Ishida's arm off at the shoulder, narrowly missing but giving him a fix on the shooter's position. He drops down amidst the buildings, using them as stepping stones to loop back in the direction of the incoming fire until he can sense the presence of a shinigami's reiatsu. With one great leap he vaults into the air, taking aim at the rooftop where his enemy has been holed up.

“Almost smart!” Kai commends the boy as the spiritual arrow glances off his tinbe, which he quickly brings to bear. “Welcome to my dojo, boy!”

Having lured his overconfident foe into a closer range by refusing to change his stationary shooting position, Kai dashes towards Ishida and blocks his line of sight with the reinforced turtle shell.

Ishida curses his own mistake, retrieving a narrow, rectangular piece of metal from a belt around his body...

You tell Rangiku to lend what backup she can to Kai, though you doubt he'll have too much difficulty with a quincy as young and inexperienced as Ishida is.

“I take it you're gonna meet with your student?” Rosa asks as you sprint towards where Mirai should be fighting.

You nod solemnly. “I've been putting this off for far too long.”

“Do you intend to capture her?” Tenkotsuki presses quietly, perhaps sensing your unease about the whole issue.

“Probably,” you admit. “She'll be safer in custody now that the other Captains are getting involved.”

“You do care about her,” Tenkotsuki muses, sounding almost relieved.

After a moment you allow yourself a small smile. “I guess I do.”

When you find Mirai, she's already fighting with Tatsuki. The human girl has donned a modified shinigami uniform looted from some nameless grunt she's beaten along the way, distinguishable by her lack of sandals. Seems her style still revolves around empty handed fighting, and she must fight better barefoot. As if all of the Seireitei is one big boxing ring.

“You impress me, girl,” Mirai admits, having drawn her kanabō. Though she seems to have made little real progress, it seems your Commando has the upper hand here. Mirai has taken no injuries, while Tatsuki seems bruised and a little tired.

“I never expected such an interesting ability. Even many of our Lieutenants would have a difficult time against you.”

Tatsuki wipes the sweat off her brow with a grin. “You're a bit of an oni yourself! What's that thing even made out of, anyway? And how can you swing it?”

Mirai laughs to herself, leaning against her kanabō casually. “I may look frail, but appearances are often deceiving in the Soul Society. Speaking of which, we have company.”

“Sorry,” you tell Tatsuki with a bow. “I can't allow you to keep running around like this. Not only do I have my responsibilities as a Captain, but the situation has changed.”

“What do you mean?” Tatsuki frowns, angry that you'd turn on her and her friends like this. “What sort of change makes attacking us okay?”

“A Captain has been killed,” you explain, surprising Mirai with your forwardness. “Ichigo is a prime suspect, but all of you are wanted now. The other Captains are getting involved as well, which means you're all in grave danger.”

“I'm not going to let Ichigo down,” she insists confidently. “So long as he's out there fighting, I'll be doing my part.”

You sigh. She's not understanding the severity of the situation. “I'm going to let my Fourth seat capture you now, Tatsuki. You've clearly grown much stronger, and I'm proud of you. But I hope this will show you how far you are from being able to take on a Captain.”

“Mirai, please apprehend her.”

Your Commando gives you a knowing look. Of all the people who have filled the position, including your old friend Kai, Mirai has always had the greatest understanding of what makes you tick. She nods solemnly, aware of the fact that you're ordering her to hurt someone you consider a friend.

As the two clash again, you can feel two massive bursts of reiatsu in the distance: one feels like a quincy, and the other is clearly Rangiku's Byakkokiri. It's tough to say for sure, but you feel like Rangiku has a pretty solid handle on the situation.

Mirai swings her Sesshōseki at Tatsuki, who carefully sidesteps it and throws a powerful punch at her opponent. Mirai raises the ring end of the kanabō to block the blow, but the force of it slides the Commando back on her feet.

It's fairly clear even from that brief exchange that Yoruichi has taught Tatsuki to fight, building on top of the basics you yourself covered with the girl. Her stance is much better suited to a standard form of hakuda, and each blow is well-tempered with reiatsu. Some of the thicker Lieutenants like Renji could really learn a thing or two from her technique, and her reiatsu itself is obviously at Lieutenant level.

A second pair of bursts alert you to yet another fight beginning in the distance: Kenpachi has finally managed to find prey. It's almost certainly Ichigo. And barely noticeable, you feel that Shunsui is fighting someone as well. That's probably Yasutora.

After so much faffing about it seems the Captains have sniffed out all of the human invaders within a five minute interval of each other.

“Sucks to be them,” you frown, hoping that Yoruichi is already on her way to bail Ichigo out. Even after beating Renji there's no chance in hell the boy can survive against Zaraki even long enough for you to get there yourself.

Instead you watch as Sesshōseki passes cleanly through Tatsuki's body.

“Wait, what?” you exclaim, genuinely surprised for the second time today. “Since when is this a thing?”

“That is not the first time she has used that trick,” Mirai frowns, having maneuvered to the far side of her opponent. “She is a difficult one to figure out.”

“You're not gonna let me go,” Tatsuki growls wearily. “So I've gotta pull out the stops.”

A ferocious snap-kick nearly takes Mirai's head off, but your Commando ducks low and sweeps her kanabō at Tatsuki's exposed left ankle.

Again the weapon seems to slide right through her... but the chains erupting from Mirai's left sleeve as she follows through find a purchase.

“Bakudo 63: Sajō Sabaku!” Mirai cries, entrapping Tatsuki as the chains sweep up into the blind spot left by the human girl's hakama and bind her in place. With an equally resolute cry of defiance Tatsuki strains briefly against the spell, then kicks off hard against the ground and slides right out.

Sesshōseki falls heavily onto the back of Tatsuki's head with a loud crack, and the girl goes limp.

"My apologies," Mirai pants. "That was more brutal than I wanted it to be. You fought well, human, so take a break for now. Allow us to handle things from here."

"She's unconscious," you observe. "She can't hear you."

"Regardless."

It seems like the fight against Shunsui is already over, and Ishida's power is weakening. Ichigo is still fighting at full tilt, but you can tell Zaraki is getting serious.

"Sorry, boy," Shunsui mutters as an astonished Yasutora falls to the floor, blood spurting from the wound in his shoulder and chest. "I understand your feelings, but I have my own duties to consider."

Lieutenant Ise moves in to join her Captain, and is about to say something when she notices the fallen human still breathing. She looks down at him, a mixture of pity and distaste in her eyes.

"Captain, this boy is still alive. Shall I..."

Shunsui grabs her by the upraised hand, stopping her from using whatever technique she was about to employ to kill Yasutora.

"A lady shouldn't be in such a hurry to do things like that, Nanao," he insists quietly. "Besides, Lady Riku told me she wants these invaders alive."

After a quiet moment with his Lieutenant that could almost be called tender, Shunsui spares a nervous glance at the fallen boy.

"He IS alive, right?" the Captain mutters. "Did I overdo it?"

“I'll take care of this,” you tell Mirai quietly, gently lifting Tatsuki's limp body in your arms. You're careful about her head and neck, in case the injuries Mirai gave her were more severe than you anticipated.

Mirai looks at her in concern. “Was that okay? I mean, I hope I did not hurt her too badly.”

“You did fine,” you reassure her. “I know you take this sort of thing as seriously as I do.”

“She is a human, I am a shinigami,” Mirai replies quietly, but with a conviction you rarely hear from shinigami these days. “The dead have no right to kill the living. You taught me that, ma'am.”

“And you've become a fine officer,” you reply, giving Mirai a gentle nudge. “I'm glad I met you all that time ago, back in the Academy.”

Finally, Ishida's spiritual presence nearly disappears. He's not dead, but he's clearly done fighting for the foreseeable future. Rangiku and Kai begin the trip back to your barracks as well.

After a massive increase in Kenpachi's reiatsu, Ichigo's presence all but vanishes. You stop in your tracks, a sinking feeling taking over as Mirai glances at you in concern. Then, shortly afterwards, you feel a similar explosion in Ichigo's power. The boy has grown far stronger than you could have anticipated, easily reaching Captain level.

Well, the level of a Captain in shikai, at least. A weak one at that. But it's clearly enough to put the pressure back on Kenpachi.

“What even happened?” you mutter, continuing on to your headquarters. Shinigami quickly make way as you forge a path to the prison.

“Mirai, please call a Fourth Division medical team,” you order. “Tell Unohana we have at least two invaders in out custody, and may have a third soon.”

Mirai nods quietly. “Yes ma'am.”

In the mean time Ichigo has increased his power again, enough to match Kenpachi. In one brief burst that shakes the ground for miles around they clash, and both of their spiritual presences disappear.

You lay Tatsuki down on a mattress in a cell, her hands now heavily cuffed. She's not breaking out any time soon, even if she wakes up right now.

“The girl was distributing properties through her body,” Tenkotsuki explains. “That is why she could phase through the binding spell Miss Mirai used, and allowed that weapon to phase through her. It also explains her proficiency at hakuda, as well as how she could hit with such physical force. She shifted her mass into her fist along with the reiatsu, meaning she can hit with far greater force.”

So Tatsuki can shift the properties of things? If she's not just limited to herself, that's several levels of bullshit right there. I wonder if it only has to be physical properties? Could she shift metaphysical properties around as well perhaps?

It won't come up for a while, and it's not immediately relevant, so I'll give you the present limitations.

With practice and effort, she can shift ANY property over which she has a clear understanding. Some properties require much more effort than others, and she can't do it in quick succession.

She can't remove a property entirely, just redistribute it.

She can only distribute properties within her own body.

She can't move properties across a physical boundary not formed by her own body: for example, this means she can't phase through surfaces entirely. That would require her to move her "tangibility" across the "boundary" formed by the surface she's moving through which she cannot do.

“That's pretty cool,” you admit, legitimately impressed at how your one-time student has improved. “And she'll only improve with age, too.”

“Hope she doesn't hold this against you,” Rosa muses.

You're almost sure that she won't.

Rangiku brings Ishida in a few minutes later, tattered and bloodied, wrapped up in Kai's Commando haori. The garment is heavily stained, a testament to the severity of Ishida's wounds. Rangiku for her part is only mildly wounded, with what looks like a burn on her left bicep from a near miss.

“The kid's pretty good,” she grunts, setting him gracelessly onto a second mattress. “We'll need a medic.”

“You kicked his ass,” you frown. “What technique did you use on him?”

“A new one,” Rangiku tells you, with a little pride in her voice. “I call it Ōyamaneko no Mai. Developed it a few years back.”

“You'll have to show me that one some time,” you nod approvingly. “If it was enough to handle him that easily, it must be powerful. I could feel the fight from here.”

Yasutora is in bad condition as well when Shunsui brings him in.

“Sorry, I think I mighta overdid it!” Shunsui bows apologetically. “I don't think you'll be interrogating him any time soon.”

“That's going around,” you shrug. “The two we've already got are in rough shape.”

“Look after these three,” you order your daughter and Commandos. “And please apologize on my behalf for the rough treatment. Pay especially close attention to the girl, she can phase through objects. I'm not sure those reiatsu-suppressing cuffs can stop her.”

That's strange. Somewhere in the Seireitei, you're almost certain something lewd is happening.

Ah. It's Yoruichi, whose reiatsu is currently hidden by kidō. She's running at high speeds, carrying Ichigo towards the Sōkyoku hill training grounds. And knowing that she has been disguised as a cat all this time, you're presuming that she's naked.

He also does not believe in back grounds, which misses a chance in a place like Soul Society and other places to show off how different they are.

It was your posting of lewd Yoru images that did it, Queen. The authorities were shocked.

Hallibel's design was especially spot on, if you know what I'm saying

You make a quick stop at Yoruichi's quarters, grabbing a pair of hakama and her favorite orange kosode. She's worn this thing or something like it often when she's been off duty, for as long as you've known her. You also find her ring, which she couldn't wear in feline form, and take off for the cave.

“We need to stop meeting like this,” you quip when you finally catch up with Yoruichi, who's barely managed to stop Ichigo's bleeding. She looks up at you with a smile, brushing some of her hair out of her face.

You pass her the clothes, and she begins tugging them on. “Thanks, Riku. It was getting chilly down there.”

“So how bad have things gotten?”

“Mirai took down Tatsuki,” you recount, “while Rangiku and Kai beat Ishida. Shunsui wrecked Yasutora's shit about the same time. All three are a mess, but they'll recover.”

“That's good,” Yoruichi nods thoughtfully as she tucks her kosode in. “How are yours doing?”

“Mirai came out without a scratch, as usual. Kai's zanpakuto took some damage but he's fine. Rangiku got an itty bitty burn on her arm, probably because Ishida used Letzt Stil.”

“So pretty well, then,” Yoruichi sighs contentedly, seating herself against a nearby wall. “Ichigo's the last one free. Whoever finds Ganju and that Fourth Division kid will capture them for sure, Kenpachi knocked them both out.”

“So it's on us from here,” you conclude. “Maybe some help from Ichigo?”

“He's too weak,” Yoruichi replies curtly. “At least as he is now.”

“You're not thinking...”

Yoruichi gives you a wicked grin, gesturing for you to sit. You join her on the floor, leaning up against each other.

“He'll be fine,” she tells you, and seemingly herself as well. “If anyone else can use that technique, it's going to be Berry-boy here.”

Damn. Surprised Rangiku got out with only an itty bitty burn. He fucked Mayuri up pretty well with that shit. Also we need to call him a dumbass when he wakes up.

Rangiku is substantially faster, and less prone to overthinking.

Her "final" Bankai ability is also pretty fucking nuts. In case you were wondering, Ōyamaneko no Mai means "Dance of the Lynx" in Japanese, and yes, there is a mythological reasoning behind the name. You can see if you can figure that out, but it's really fucking obscure even in Japan. There are only a few people alive who even know how to tell the story it's from properly.

Wonder how many people were shocked by Rangiku hitting bankai. She likely has kept it quiet.

does it have anything to do with magic cats dancing with towels on their heads?
>>
>>43879280
Byakuya will have aneurysm if that happens
I hope it does
>>
>>43879381
Absolutely. I might even re-render it using the original loanword: the myth isn't even Yamato in origin, but some words from other cultures do end up in Japanese language due to their "exotic" sound and connotations: especially in poetry. I just didn't happen to have the original word written down anywhere handy.

>>43879396
Nobody really knows about it yet outside of Yoruichi and the Commandos. Even Gin only suspects she has it.

>>43879410
Nothing whatsoever, but the myth is actually kind of terrifying.
>>
>>43879283
Are you not going to answer this Queen?
>>
>>43879334
I have a lot of fun trying to figure out things about you by reading your writing. I mean, you know a lot of interestingly intimate details about japanese culture and history, different things than the average weaboo anyway; yet you're extremely english conversant, know european military history and even a bit of oddly accurate amerindian folklore.

Almost as if you've been around for a long time, and spent most of that learning.
>>
>>43879334
I don't remember the whole myth, but there was something about bakeneko that were the offspring of a cat and a fox that learned how to speak, dance, and shapeshift
>>
>>43879283
He'll find it when he wakes up.

The circumstances of his conception are the even if the circumstances that lead to it may have been different.

Since when were you under the impression that Sean Connery wasn't a bear with a Scottish accent?
>>
Poor Ishida, he uses on Letzt Stil and still gets BTFO.

No narrative closure like he had in the canon fight.
>>
>>43880477
that's because grampa Ishida didn't get murdered and experimented on
>>

>that's because grampa Ishida didn't get murdered and experimented on

Yeah, instead he got to bury gramps, with the family.

He also came with more gear then canon, he had that sword/arrow this time too.
>>
>>43879566
damn those two are adorable. I really hope they don't get stuck in that space between friend and love interest like canon, even if I'll feel a little bad for Tatsuki

>>

To be fair as was mentioned earlier in the thread up until till the end of the winter war (stopped reading at the quincy arc) he only lost to people Ichigo lost to or would've.

Spoony bastard beat the shit out of Ichigo, Captain Pink would've beaten the shit outta Ichigo and at the time Best Cat broke her leg and arm against Yammy so y'know could've been worse.

I mean it's not like he's Eyebrowtat's Mcjobsalot i.e. the man who jobs to a watermelon.
>>
>>43881701
It's a lot better now too, since we know Shunsui was probably right behind OMG in terms of bullshit power.
>>
>>43881807

At least after this arc, Riku will be able to take some personal interest in training them, if Aizen is still interested in them.
