You are Tsukuda Ryouta, a Shinigami trainee.

You, along with about a hundred other trainees, have taken the 12th Division Captain's special test meant to measure your potential as a member of the scientific division. Just as Urahara Kisuke has promised, the test had practically no questions aimed at general erudition or one's education as a Shinigami. It was a simple written test with 30 question and 8 possible answers for each.

The strangest thing about the test is that none of the answers seemed valid at all. It's not that they were all blatantly wrong; it's that they seemed to be correct, all at the same time.

But perhaps you just couldn't figure them out. Indeed, it may be a little arrogant to assume that because you couldn't find the correct answer, they were all wrong.

Regardless, you answered the questions to the best of your ability. The results were to be mailed a week after the fact, but it actually took the captain three weeks to check the tests. Perhaps he's been busy with something.

You unwrap the envelope, but instead of your results and a recommendation, or perhaps the absence of the latter, as you've been expecting, the letter you have in your hands is an invitation for tea with Urahara Kisuke.

It's strange. It doesn't state the reason, so you're left to guess.

...

>Ask around, try to figure out if anyone else received an invitation.
>Be more subtle about it, ask your classmates about their results instead.
>Don't bug anyone, just head to the meeting when the time comes.

They sound like the type of trick questions where they wanted you to think outside the box and figure out your own answer.

The presented questions were all partially wrong and wanted you to reject just selecting one.

You decide to find out what everybody else's results look like, and you rarely even need to ask - people are discussing it already, some complaining about how the test made no sense, and others bragging about the positions they'll receive after graduation. It seems that the trainees are either blaming or praising their luck. You haven't seen anyone act like they've consciously earned it, though to be fair, you haven't asked that many people.

But it seems that no one has gotten a letter like yours. It's even stranger now.

You also ask your acquaintance, Ryuu, the same question. He, too, decided to take the test after you told him that you'd give it atry.

"I'm offered a low-ranking seated officer position if I join them. Well, I probably won't, though." He shrugs and goes quiet for a bit, looking a bit uncertain. It seems that he believes his results to be purely a matter of luck as well. "What about you, Ryouta? You got any prospects in the 12th?"

"You don't want to join the 12th, Ryuu?"

Before answering, Ryuu spends a little time pondering the question. When he speaks, it's like he's answering himself rather than you. "Yeah, I don't really want to join the 12th. I don't really have any prospects in the 11th, but... I don't think it's my kind of thing, you know? The perks of joining the 12th are basically weaseling your way out of real service and still getting paid for it. Paid even more than I would otherwise, actually. And I'm not sayin' that's a bad thing. Not running the risk of being eaten by a Hollow is a pretty impressive perk, isn't it? But it's just not my thing."

He shrugs. Whether he's uncertain about the decision he's made or about the proper way to speak his opinion on it, you can't really tell.

Or could it be that he's hesitant to risk his life, after all?

"I don't really want to pick a path I'm gonna regret later on, Ryouta. If I do join, I'm gonna have to spend an eternity reading books and pretending to be working instead of actually doing something that counts, even if for a little while and for little amounts. That sort of half-assed way of living doesn't appeal to me." Ryuu glances away, grumbling. "And screw that test. I'm not book smart in the way you're expected to be there. I don't have the smarts to invent new technologies or make cures for diseases or things like that. I'm not gonna make a difference there."

A life path that one won't regret. You don't really understand it, but it may be something to think about.

"...And of course, there's a lot of rumors going 'round about how the 12th is still a shady place to be in. I don't know if that's true or not, but you know what I think, Ryouta? Where there's smoke, there's fire. If you're thinkin' of joining them, you ought to keep an eye out."

Ryuu decides to take his leave with that, leaving his previous question unanswered.

A few days later, it's time to head to the meeting. You arrive at the tea house that was mentioned in the letter, only to find it completely empty, save for the lone staff member lurking around the building and trying to stay out of sight. From what you know, this is a fairly prestigious place, so it's quite surprising to see it in a state like this. Perhaps you've got the date wrong?

You take a seat behind a table on one of the cushions laid out on the floor, uncertain if it would be rude to interrupt the nervous-looking man darting about the place. When he finally sees you, he gasps, apparently not having noticed your arrival until now. He asks you for your name, and after you provide it, you're asked if you would like anything. It seems that your arrival here has been expected, after all.

Urahara Kisuke is apparently running late. It's no surprise; Captains, you've heard, are very busy people.

You don't want anything, so the tea shop worker leaves for a while. You are left to wait.

He's late by about twenty minutes. When he comes in, his blond hair is still as messy as you remember it being a few weeks ago. In addition to that, he has grown a small stubble.

"Sorry for being late. You are... Tsukuda Ryouta, right?" Urahara Kisuke struggles a bit to remember your name. "I am Urahara Kisuke. Captain, Urahara-san and Kisuke-kun are all fine. Whichever you like." He smiles, heading towards a seat. "Before I explain to you why you're here, would you like some tea? Maybe some sweets to go with it, too. It's my treat. People keep telling me to spend my salary on things other than work, but I've never had the chance..."

You politely refuse his offer; even so, after a slight pause, he orders some tea and sits down. It is delivered shortly. The tea is warm, its taste refined enough to reassure you that the prestige of this establishment is well deserved.

You spend some time in silence.

(2/4)
>>
>>43855314
"Maybe I should keep finding more chances to take it easy, huh? This tea is great, isn't it?!" Urahara loudly and casually praises his drink, with a voice that seems more fitting for a round of sake with his friends. His enthusiasm dies down after you nod. It feels like you're doing something wrong, like the Captain isn't feeling particularly comfortable, for whatever reason.

"...You're probably wondering why I've called you here." He decides to get straight to the point after another pause. "I was very surprised by your results. Among all the classes, they are better by a considerable margin. Either you're very lucky, or you're just the type of person I've been looking for."

You're not really sure how to answer that. Maybe you really did just get lucky?

"So, you're probably wondering why I've reserved this entire tea house and dragged you out here just to tell you that instead of sending you a letter, right? Well, first of all, I would of course like to congratulate you on your results. Congratulations." Urahara smiles and pours you some more tea. He then calls for some sweets. You thank him. "And the second reason is that the job I want you to do would be difficult to explain through a letter."

The Captain sips his cup.

"It's a very... unique position. It's not exactly official yet. It'll pay as well as a 5th seat and have all the privileges that come with it. Namely, you'll have free access to our records and libraries, on both the Human World and this one, if that's of any interest to you." He seems more serious now, no longer smiling and sitting around at his leisure. "But it'll have a... different set of responsibilities than that of any other rank in the Division. You'll be frequently sent out into the Human World to investigate anything out of the ordinary. Whenever something strange is going on at someone's post, regardless of the Division they belong to, we'll send you out to investigate it and report your findings to us."

(3/4)
>>
>>43855331
The place of a 5th seat officer is far more than most people can expect in their lives. It feels very strange to be offered its equivalent. You're really not all that skilled or talented, especially compared to someone like Hanae.

"Why me?"

"I believe that you can fill a very specific niche with your skillset. Deploying a squad of Shinigami takes time to do, and they aren't guaranteed to bring results. And even that uncertain chance still costs time, which may sometimes be too precious to expend. But a lone guy like you would be quick to deploy, it would be easy for you to remain there, and that head on your shoulders would let you achieve a much quicker result in many cases."

"I don't know, Urahara-san. I'm not certain if I could do that." He seems fairly confident. You, on the other hand, still don't really know what you're dealing with.

"The tests show otherwise. You couldn't have gotten a perfect score with luck alone. You knew what you were looking at, and you understood the patterns involved. No one else came close. Now, it's all a matter of capitalizing on your potential, and I believe no other Division is capable of doing it as well as ours."

You nod to show that you understand.

"Will I have to fight Hollows?"

"It will be your call. Since you'll usually be operating in territory already assigned to another Shinigami, it won't fall under your jurisdiction to purify Hollows. If a Hollow is the source of some anomaly, you'll have to investigate it and relay your findings to us. But your obligations end there."

"Will I be working alone?"

"Yes. Your biggest advantage is that you're capable of bringing results all by yourself. Some Divisions are more suited to recon, but they don't have your mental capacities, and recon is not exactly your goal, regardless." Urahara sips his tea and then remembers something. "Oh, but of course, you might be able to convince the local Shinigami to help you, if you ever need them."

(1/2)
>>
>>43856143
You nod again. It's still hard to say if you're as suited to the job as Urahara Kisuke seems to think.

Noticing your reluctance, he speaks up. "Of course, you'll be given training before you begin. In fact, I have a special offer for you: you can graduate the Academy early - on my behalf - and we can use that extra time to train your special skill. How about it?"

Probably won't matter as much, compared to the Reiatsu hard cap.

A D is just a 3x multiplier.

So unless the cap gets broken, ability to use it in combat will be more limited.

Not that the 12th might have some weird ways to break it.

It wouldn't be appropriate to turn down an opportunity like this. You've heard that, in some Divisions, people rarely get to see their Captains at all. But, unless you understood him wrong, Urahara Kisuke is essentially offering to tutor you.

Upon hearing your agreement, the blond man claps his hands. "Excellent! It's been a real long while since I've trained anyone, but don't worry, it won't be anything you should feel nervous about. It probably won't be any more different than your regular classes, just... specialized a bit. I ought to be the one worried instead, since I need to meet your expectations!" He chuckles a bit.

You try to assure him that it's an honor enough already. "I'll make sure to be a good student."

Urahara pours you more tea and tells you to relax.

"Though, Ryouta-kun, I can't help but wonder if you would fight a Hollow when you didn't have to."

You can't say you understand the question.

"Do you like to argue about moral quandaries? You would hardly believe how many debates I hear occurring among my staff. Some people occasionally argue that Kurotsuchi Mayuri's deeds weren't all bad. They say that, when looked at from a purely utilitarian perspective, he might have been in the right to do what he did. You may not be fully aware of the man's deeds, so I think I ought to ask you a little differently..." The man scratches at his stubble for a bit.

"Well, let's go with the tried classic. Indulge me for a bit, would you? Let's say there is a person who, as long as they are alive, will be indirectly responsible for the deaths of more than one person. The only way to stop those deaths is by killing the person. Let's assume that you are the one who has to do it. So, here's the question, Ryouta-kun:

At what ratio of people killed to people saved would you feel comfortable, justified, or in some other way at ease, doing it?"

Assuming absolute certainty that they will be responsible for those deaths and that only killing them would prevent that, 1:2.
However, you don't tend to have quite as objective a view of the situation as that.
Furthermore, there would also be the situation to consider, if the person would indirectly be the death of two mass-murderers or attempted dimension destabilizers then it would be a different story.

Don't you agree?"

You nod. Urahara seems... less impressed than he expected himself to be.

"...Well, unfortunately, those questions hold more value for Shinigami than one might assume. It is no longer merely an exaggeration blown out of proportion to appease the morbid curiosity of a bored friend. Unfortunately, it's quite appropriate. Shinigami can change the fate of the world neighboring Soul Society. They can prevent wars, crimes... unhappiness. It's just that they aren't allowed to."

He takes a look around the tea shop. The one who's been serving you isn't around. Kisuke continues, looking more at ease about speaking his mind.

"How many lives could have been allowed to continue with the death of a single person? The fates of warlords and serial killers are in the hands of the invincible Shinigami, much like any other life. Unfortunately, they can only rule over death. After all, they are balancers, not protectors. And yet... many of them get carried away and take matters into their own hands anyway."

Urahara pauses to drink his tea. "Leaders mysteriously die alone in their rooms. Serial killers disappear without a trace. Countries collapse. Dangerous research is stopped. Wars end." He shakes his head. "Our job is to make sure that this world lasts for as long as it can. If the Shinigami start taking unrelated matters into their own hands, that will never hold. That's why they aren't allowed to. And if things could have been better than they already are, they would have been. That's... what I believe."

His cup now empty, the blond man sets it down.

"I consider Kurotsuchi Mayuri to be an irredeemable monster. When it comes to him, it isn't about utilitarianism or morals. Not about one live for the sake of many. He got carried away and started to enjoy doing what he did; that's all there is to him. At that point, the good cause was just an excuse meant for the higher-ups. And frankly, it sickens me when people try to justify his actions when he never bothered to. He's not at all relevant to anything that goes on in the world."

The Captain pauses and then stands up. "I enjoyed our chat, Ryouta-kun. You are an excellent listener. I feel like I could go on and on talking to you, but I'll spare you from that. I'll go arrange things for you, alright?" He smiles, adjusts his white coat and heads towards the exit.

At the door, he stops, turning his head back to you. "And Ryouta-kun? Personally, I don't think you'd go against what's right. You seem like a calm, stoic individual. A person that many Shinigami aspire to be... if only to sleep better at night. Though, few manage to get there. You're someone who asks the right questions, but doesn't let the answers influence them."

He mutters something on his way out.

"...It is quite remarkable how often talent is overlooked."

...

Your early graduation has been arranged. All that remains is packing your things and moving to the 12th Division barracks.

It wasn't officially announced, and you haven't told anyone about it yet. If you leave things as is, they'll probably realize it only after they notice your absence.

...

>Tell Ryuu about it.
>See if you can find Hikari, tell her about it.
>Don't bother anyone with it.
>Other. (Write-in).

Tell your friends.

This is a Soul Society which badly went off the rails compared to canon too.

>See if you can find Hikari, tell her about it.
>>
>>43857658
>Tell Ryuu about it.

But only that we're accepted in the 12th Division.

I don't know, it didn't seem like he told us NOT to tell anyone, did he?
>Tell Ryuu about it.
On the one hand, it is 12th division, on the other, it seems like it could get really dangerous really fast so maybe he'd approve?
>See if you can find Hikari, tell her about it.
You know, to thank her for tutoring us
>>
>>43857658
>>Tell Ryuu about it.
>>See if you can find Hikari, tell her about it.
>>
>>43857707
Seconding, I'd prefer if they felt relieved instead of worrying about us going to the real world and whatnot.
>>
>>43857694
Can it really be called "off the rails" if Aizen didn't slaughter Central 46, and the Vandenreich didn't kill... pretty much every unnamed character?
>>
>>43857753

Well, I don't know if Aizen acted in this universe or not.

Just seems a bit different then canon, very different.
>>
>>43857753
Are Aizen and the Vandenreich even things yet?
From what I can gather Kisuke seems to just now be becoming the 12th division captain for the first time.
>>
>>43857801
Nah, he seems to be coming back from exile after Mayuri was head of 12th division?
>>
>>43857821
He's just now implementing new things like our new job though.
Maybe in this universe Mayuri was head before Kisuke?
>>
>>43857801
In Substitute Shinigami Quest it implied that Urahara somehow was able to remove both his and Aizen's Hougyoku from play, and take care of Aizen.
>>
>>43857851
Is that a prequel to this quest or something, then?
>>
>>43857658
Voting over, writing!
>>
>>43857850
Well really, do we know how Mayuri wound up in the Maggot's Nest in the first place where Urahara recruited him in canon? Or how long he was there? Like it's been implied that he somehow knows Shutara of Squad Zero.
>>
>>43857850
Wasn't Mayuri captain and then deposed? Then due to Aizen Kisuke released him before going into exile
>>
>>43857876
Until we know the year, this could actually be taking place before the events of Substitute Shinigami. It's probably not relevant to this quest, unless we wind up fighting R63 Gilgamesh.
>>
>>43857801
I was under the impression this setting was way into the future (at least 30 years) after the events of the vandenreich.
>>
>>43858002
I'm under the impression it's way in the past, maybe a few decades before his exile
>>
>>43858002
I find that very unlikely that this is post-canon.

Actually, I'm pretty sure Mushroom hasn't caught up to canon Bleach? He didn't even know who Gremmy was.
>>
>>43858032
Was Mayuri leader of the 12th before Kisuke got him out of Prison? I thought he was just some criminal
>>
>>43858002
>>43858032
This is probably how things will stay until we get a really defining moment.

>>43858066
Nah, Kisuke was the leader after he got promoted from the 2nd Division. Mayuri originally headed the Research and Development which iirc wasn't actually a proper division yet.
>>
>>43858066
We have no idea who Mayuri was or how long he was there, or what he even did to get arrested. It could be that this is what Mushroom has modified?
>>
>>43858066
this quest is in a different timeline, I'm pretty sure.
in the previous quest, the protag encountered an exiled mayuri with Urahara being the 12th division captain, in canon it's the other way around.
>>
>>43858055
>Actually, I'm pretty sure Mushroom hasn't caught up to canon Bleach?
That would be pretty weird thing for a QM to do. They usually study the setting incredibly deeply for research purposes
>>
>>43858108
Are we sure that this takes place in the same universe as the other quest, though?
>>
>>43858201

Similar, that quest had Kisuke as captain for the 12, who was trying to kill Mayuri there too, who was in the human world.
>>
>>43858201
Not way to know for sure yet, but both quests have Urahara taking over after Mayuri.
>>
>>43858201
Until we find out for sure it's probably dangerous or ignorant to assume so.
>>
>>43857707
>>43857725

It's easier to find Ryuu, so you tell him the news first.

"Are you kidding? Man..." Ryuu smirks and pats you on the shoulder. "That's great! And that Division fits you too damn well, too! You're moving out right now, though? Aren't you gonna stay to celebrate it? I can skip a class or two if you want me to, ahaha!"

You assure him that it's fine. You don't want to be a nuisance.

"Well, damn it, we might not get to see each other often after that. You know, since we're splitting off big time? Our Divisions are going to be, like, polar opposites. Heard they make fun of the Divisions that don't fight. Not that I care about something like that for it to matter, but..."

"I'm not going to stay in the barracks all the time, Ryuu. We could probably meet somewhere if you want."

He seems surprised to hear it. "Really? Well, I'll hold you up to that sometime. Don't turn into too big of a star and forget about me, alright?" He laughs and smacks your shoulder some more. "I hope you'll enjoy your life, Ryouta. You're a smart guy, you're gonna do good, I'm sure."

Does he think that the 12th Division is all about researching science in dark basements? He'd probably be surprised to hear about your job there, but the classes are starting. You shouldn't hold him up any longer.

...

You stumble into Hikari on the way back to your room. She seems surprised to see you out here, probably with good cause - the classes are up right now. When you tell her about what happened to you recently, her reaction isn't quite as positively sharp as the red haired Ryuu's.

>>
>>43858916
"The 12th Division? Are you sure about this, Ryouta-kun?.. Uh, I mean... It's great! I, uh, wish you luck..." She suddenly frowns, seemingly at herself, and shakes her head. "No, no, it's nothing. It's just... I've heard some things. I guess they're just rumors, but I... it never really mattered to me. I never knew anyone who wanted to join the 12th. I guess it's a bit, um, strange to have it suddenly matter."

"What did you hear?" You decide to ask.

"About thirty years ago, Kurotsuchi Mayuri, the Division's previous Captain, had an experiment go wrong. Um, he was doing something with the Quincy, but his... they managed to break out. I heard that they were... killing everyone at random, screaming like they were in pain. I wasn't there, I wasn't a Shinigami yet, but I know some people who were... They say it was horrible. The Quincy are supposed to be humans, but they hardly looked anything like them. They say it's like their flesh was melting and... moving around like a living creature. Before the Shinigami finally managed to put them out of their misery, they killed so many people... especially from the 12th."

Hikari shivers at the thought.

"I thought the Quincy were completely gone after the war?"

The girl nods. "But it seems that a few were left alive, after all... But there probably aren't any more left. After the incident, they investigated the research department and found many traces of similar... experiments... along with captives, all of whom were released. The Captain was then stripped of his Shinigami powers and exiled into the Human World."

...

>"I'll keep it in mind, Hikari."

There is one of the diversion points. His quincy research went bad and his screw up killed a lot of people.
>>

But the question is was this replacing whatever got him in the Maggot's Nest gin the first place?

Like would they really un-exile Urahara?

He was in the Maggots nest was for being dangerous, but have not yet acted I think.

If the blow up was bad enough that Aizen's scheme also unraveled, he may of gotten back in too.

>"I don't think Urahara Kisuke has anything to do with that, Hikari."

Kisuke is slippery but I don't think he's twisted in the same fashion that Mayuri is

"I don't think Urahara Kisuke has anything to do with that, Hikari."

The girl meekly nods again. "I... guess you're right. Urahara Kisuke came back after half a century of retirement and took charge of the Twelfth when no one else did. I heard they talked about disbanding the Division, but... they have an important role. Um, we all do, right? All of the Divisions, I mean."

You agree. Without its S.R.D.I., Soul Society would probably take a serious blow. Nothing good would come out of Divisions splitting up progress among each other. They'd probably see no need to share some things with others, especially without obligations to do so. It'd be a divide in efforts the Shinigami would ultimately suffer from.

"What happened to the surviving captives? They were Quincy too, right?"

"No, the Quincy all got out, I think. There were Shinigami there, too... I don't really want to talk about it..."

You apologize, though Hikari assures you that it's okay. After a brief silence, the girl speaks up.

"Well... Ryouta-kun, I do wish you good luck, really. I wish I started out as well as you are right now! But, um, I'm fine where I am, too. It just took a little while... uh..." She smiles in a nervous manner for a bit, but then remembers something. "Oh! I should be heading to class... One of the instructors wanted me to demonstrate Kido for the students! I... I completely forgot..."

You nod and let her dash past you.

There's one other person you could probably tell this about without coming off as a braggart, but you don't know how to reach her. It can't be helped.

Well, it seems that this is it.

Your life as a Shinigami is about to begin.

Ending thread for tonight, it's getting really late for me!

I'll try to run another thread tomorrow around the same time, but I can't guarantee it as well as I'd like to, unfortunately! Need to take care of a few things tomorrow, I don't know how long they might take. Either way, keep an eye out on twitter, I'll make sure to keep you notified:
https://twitter.com/Mushroomgami

If you have any feedback or questions, shoot them my way!

Thanks for reading!

Updated Character Sheet: http://pastebin.com/maynXK2P
>>
>>43859485
I have a question

Will Urahara's training be anything particularly interesting or special? Because he mentioned that the position is going to be equivalent to 5th seat, but as many have mentioned in this thread, Ryouta is completely ass at basically everything right now and would be immediately slaughtered in any sort of dangerous situation, while a 5th seat is supposed to be pretty stronk and approaching 'Not Redshirt' level, potentially even closing in on Shikai.

Not a complaint or anything, just curious as to what Urahara is playing at.
>>
>>43859485
Thanks for running
>>
>>43859557

Yeah.

Personally, I think our stats should be slightly higher.

Not B grade or anything. Fuck that.

But maybe some Cs and no Es.
>>
>>43859557
It will pay as well as the 5th seat does and has as many benefits to it. That's what Urahara meant.

And the training won't be anything particularly interesting. It's just mental gymnastics for Ryouta to get better at analyzing things.
>>
>>43859485
>Japanese Ghost Wizard path confirmed

Aww yiss, Kido is the shit.
>>
>>43859593
So Ryouta will continue to be complete ass at basically everything and get immediately slaughtered in any sort of dangerous situation?

I mean, I'm not looking for godmode or anything, but that D rank Reiatsu cap basically means that the character is destined to die pointlessly against a scrub hollow to demonstrate that it is dangerous to a more important character.
>>
>>43859669
But Hollows adhere to similar REIA standards!

E Rank is usually what the average, newly born Hollows are like. D Rank is possessed by mature Hollows who've survived for a few decades. But their attributes are naturally big across the board, and their special abilities are unpredictable!
>>
>>43859755
I'm assuming that Gillians get C, Adjuchas get B and Vastos get A?
Or do they end up going beyond the current scale?
>>
>>43859789
>Or do they end up going beyond the current scale?
Things don't really go beyond the current scale!

I can only think of like two things that do, and they both involve a certain magical rock.
>>
>>43859789
Honestly I assume Yamamoto even goes up to SSS.

>>43859755
Have you caught up to the manga yet?
>>
>>43859853
>Have you caught up to the manga yet?
Not yet! But maybe one day!
>>
>>43859755
My concern is that he is being sent out to investigate potentially interesting spiritual phenomena, so comparing him to an 'average' hollow isn't worth much since by definition the things he'll be seeing aren't going to be average.

I'm just wondering if this quest will see him end up at a seated officer level or if he's going to be a scrub for all eternity.
>>
>>43859895
You probably should! Especially if you're running a Bleach Quest and all, it's pretty much free inspiration for new ideas.
>>
>>43859940
Maybe when it ends for good!

I have too many things on my backlog already, it's pretty embarrassing!
>>
>>43860015
Both those things could take years.
>>
>>43860015
I mean, it's also maybe a tiny bit embarassing if you're doing a Bleach thing and you don't know who Hyousube Ichibei is.
>>
>>43860015

It's a quick read. Most of the pages are blank white space.
>>
>>43860116
>implying "The Heart' isn't the greatest use of space in a manga in history
lmao
>>
I'd be interested to know the current lineup of Captains in this continuity.
>>
>>43860285
It's the same, with Urahara Kisuke being the only exception!
>>
>>43860322
Oh, now that's strange.
You mean Yoruichi replaced with Soi Fon, Shinji replaced with Aizen etc...?
>>
>>43860322
Are... are you sure about that?

So instead of Kensei, Love, Rose, Shinji, Yoruichi, and Isshin, there's Tousen, Gin, Komamura, Soi Fon, Hitsugaya, and Sosuke fucking Aizen?
>>
>>43860427
>>43860450
That's right!
>>
>>43860427
I mean, I knew from Substitute Shinigami Quest that Mushroom doesn't really care about high stakes big picture stuff, but I'm beginning to suspect that he hasn't even given much thought to the big picture in the background as far as it making sense.
>>
>>43860480
That is... really unlikely! Especially with both Hougyokus being gone, and Urahara still being here, but Yoruichi not! And Isshin who disappeared in a completely different incident that requires Aizen having a Hougyoku!
>>
>>43860488
I'm beginning to think that there isn't much of a big picture in the background.
Maybe this Aizen is a regular shinigami captain and all of the old captains retired willingly?

Also, I can't wait until we level up Analytical Mind enough to go full Joseph Joestar.
>>
>>43860525
I don't think we're even gonna see another captain, so don't get your hopes up. This still won't be that kind of quest.
>>
>>43860570
I'm not sure what seeing captains has to do with anything I just posted.
>>
>>43860600
I don't know, you can't be Joseph Joestar without having Pillar Men to school. Having there be something that would be really impressive to outwit is unlikely. Like I'd be surprised if we'll encounter an Adjuchas.
>>
>>43860525
It's pretty clear in the manga that shinigami don't retire: they mostly end up either in the Maggots' Nest or the ground.
>>
I have decided that I have no idea what is happening any more in this quest in regards to canon.

Since the truth of Aizen still being here is weird and with Kiske too.

Did you read the turn back the pendulum arc mushroom?

Unless it never happened and they died elsewhere.
>>
>>43860646
Though Omaeda's dad and Iba's mom were able to retire, also that sunglasses shop is run by shinigami, so I think it's more Shinigami who are above a certain gradient of power and thus deemend irreplacable.
>>
>>43860683
I'll try to explain it in due time!

But if things still don't make any sense after everything, well, blame me!
>>
>>43860707

I think they can retire, they are still mostly on call, ready to be called upon.

They can't surrender their duties or get out of them, but they can go on Hiatus from active service?

Always been a little bit inconsistent.
>>
>>43860759
This is correct. You may not be on active duty for a variety of reasons, but if you try to leave for real one of Yoruichi/Soi Fon's ninja kidnaps you and puts you in a hole.
>>
>>43860860
Well, unless you manage to escape to ghost mexico or something, though that brings it's own share of problems.
>>
>>43861041
Granted. But the fact that Yoruichi can desert and Urahara can just pop in and out of active duty strikes me as really weird.
