You are Solomon, a Ceph independent captain of the good ship Hot Needle of Inquiry. Along with your trusty Felinid pilot Deg and new engineer Mara, you strike out in search of relics in the northern Spin Ends.

"Welcome back, user Solomon," comes the familiar, canned voice of the captain's terminal.

'God damn, I really need a better password," grumbles across your thoughts as you reflexively start up the long-range radio application. You gently push off the computer desk, floating into the centre of the room like a shrimp dumpling in a bowl of Cetacean soup.

"What is your desired listening material tonight, user Solomon?"

You ponder the question as you give your compressed muscles a much needed stretch, sinuous tentacles writhing through the humid and weightless air, painted by the shifting and subdued lighting.

"Hrm, how about some..."

>Felinid rave pop? (+1 Dexterity)
>Ceph electro jazz? (+1 Constitution)
>Cetacean soundscape? (+1 Charisma)
>Corvid techno? (+1 Intelligence)
>Canid power rock? (+1 Strength)

you reply somewhat absently.

"Selection registered, scanning now."

Tentacles anchored to the wall, you find yourself drifting towards your gear locker. Maybe that last scuffle on Constantinople was one too many in recent weeks, but you want to be certain your trusty weapon is ready for whatever lies in wait at the Cetacean mining operation. Leads like this on rarely go unnoticed for long...

The door clicks open, and you let out the sigh you didn't know you were holding; it's still there, though you're not sure why it wouldn't be. You reach a tentacle inside and delicately withdraw your trusty...

Simple, utilitarian, and far from overdesigned. The metallo-plastic alloy feels light in your suckered grip, but that's probably just the lack of gravity. Belying its simple appearance, you know that the short ranged, uncontained plasma blast it emits when fired is enough to tear through even the toughest Canid body armour; nobody messes around when they see one of these being jockeyed around.

The computer chirps: "signal found, playing selection."

"Swear to Man, it takes longer every time with each new update..." you find yourself grumbling as you set the potent weapon back into its nook. Highly electronic tones and beats begin to waft throughout the room: it may be Corvid, but that doesn't stop it from being good. You're just slipping into a relaxed state of listening when your reverie is cracked by the sharp beep of the intercom.

"Captain Solomon, hello? Can I please have a moment?" comes a squawking you recognize to be Mara's through the speaker. With a groan, you float towards the control pad.

>"Come back later!"
>Open the door.
>Mute the intercom.

Also shut off music and squint at her with an annoyed glare, spinning gun on a tentacle.
>>
"Computer, mute music," you growl just before the door opens.

Mara still wears the same high tech flight suit, but you note it is already smudged with a variety of lubricants, chemicals, and other assorted shipboard technical messes. Her face scrunches up just a bit too much when she catches sight of your ponderous, squishy form; few people actually see Cephs outside their exosuits.

Your eyes twist into the Cephalapod version of a glare,

"yes? What is it?" she seems visibly unsettled by your unmodulated voice.

"Well, er, Captain. We're underway and all, and being that I'm a crewmember in full standing," she says with just a shred of confidence, "I was hoping you'd fill me in with the details of our current operation. I mean to say, what I'll need to be doing. Operation wise."

"We're running down a lead on a potential relic find out in the Northern Spin Ends. Deg's got an old contact at a Cetacean mining facility in the Kerls System, supposedly one of the prospecting crews found some pretty interesting energy readings on one of the moons."

She cocks her head, "we're jumping halfway across the galaxy because of "interesting energy readings?" Are you sure about this Captain?"

Questioning your decisions already? You frown a little.

"The "interesting energy readings" we're jumping halfway across the galaxy for were controlled, completely uniform. Like a machine. Except this machine must've been about the size of the whole moon, if Deg's friend is to be believed. Exxageration or no, it's worth at least looking into. It's either this, or gunning after pirates. This'll probably pay more, which is just another bonus."

"Sorry Captain, I didn't mean to question your authority," she replies apologetically, "That's no way for a n-"

You wave an exasperated tentacle, cutting her off mid sentence,

"Don't worry about it, you're allowed to have concerns. Just don't let them get in the way of the mission. Now," you change the subject, "what's the state of the engine room? No unplanned explosions I trust?"

"No Sir, I'm actually quite surprised that everything is in such good condition on a Felinid ship, not meaning any offence."

"What do you mean, Felinid ship?" a bit of an edge audible, even to those unfamiliar with the Ceph dialect. Mara quails a little bit,

"I didn't mean anything by it! I just meant that Felinid ships are usually so... unique, I would expect some level of inefficiency due to unexpected mechanical arrangements."

You roll your eyes, not that the Corvid could interpret the motion on a Ceph like yourself.

"Look, Mara, I know you mean well. But Deg knows what he's doing, moreso than I care to admit in front of him," you chuckle a little, "he's been tinkiering with The Hot Needle since before I even owned her, you can trust he knows what he's doing. Ususally, at least."

"Of course sir, I understand," she nods her feathered head, "I should be getting back to the engineering bay, thank you for your time captain."

She effects what you imagine must be the Corvid version of a salute and waddles off down the hallway on her wings.

How long will it take her to get used to working on a tramp freighter like this one and not a Venator cruiser? You laugh internally and return to listening to your music.

It's a long way to the Kerls system, and you think of ways to pass the time.

Brit OP, in case you're getting discouraged, today is a huge family holiday in the US.

If you had to describe the Corvid salute, you'd say it was something between the ancient human dance "The Stanky Leg" and circular waving of the opposit talon to the wing being outstretched. Quite the sight to be sure.

You decide it would be a good idea to talk to Deg before you settle in for the rest of the jump. Who knows what sort of shenanigans are running through that crazy cat's head?

The cool metallo-plast of your exosuit clamps around squishy flesh, squeezing it into a shape more suitable for "regular" gravity, a feeling you will neever truly get used to. A few beeps and whirs and you're on your way, metallic clangs echoing emptily in the hallway. The same, intense music rumbles on the other side of the cockpit door, muffled by three inches of steel and rubber sealing. Swift taps on the control panel open it, causing you to grimace at the suddenly increased volume.

"Turn that shit down, come one!" you reflexively bark over the din.

Deg turns the volume knob way down with a clawed hand, "Solomon, didn't see you there!" he beams, "get up here and pop a squat!"

Popping a squat is hardly the correct word for your ponderous and lumbering metallic frame, but you do nonetheless.

You look over to the russet furred Felinid, "stylish" black synthleather jacket festooned with garishly colourful patches and logos, each glowing with tiny flexible light tubes.

"What's up cap?"

"What do you think of Mara? Think we made the right call letting a birdbrain that close to a nuclear fission engine?"

"I don't know cap," he says holding back giggles, "Corvids always seemed a bit FLIGHTY to me, you know?"

You hang your head in your hands, unable to help but smile. At least, the Ceph equivalent of smiling, which is quite literally horrifying to the other Uplifts, you've found the hard way.

"Come on Deg, I'm being serious, you don't think she's too green?"

He flips idly through radio stations, eventually settling on some relaxed Cephalapod jazz.

"Honestly cap, no more green than you when we picked you up way back when," with that last sentence he pauses a little, sinking back into his bucket seat.

"How are you feeling Deg?"

He paints a wide smile across his face that would seem genuine to anyone who hadn't been rolling running with him for almost a half a decade; the exposed rearmost teeth are what give it away.

"Feeling great cap, feeling great!" he lies through his teeth, knowing you know it.

"You can't put off talking about it forever Deg, it's going to kill you if you do."

Degivilas pulls himself out of the chair and walks over to the mini fridge built into the wall, takes out two slim cans and tosses one to you. He cracks his open and takes a deep swig, turning to stare out into the whirl of jump space.

"I don't know cap... you've lost family, you know how it is."

You look at the can, tiny in your prosthetic hands.

"Cephs don't have real families Deg, it's not the same and you know it."

He stands there silently, back stsill turned towards you.

Part of me wants to praise your tenacity and commitment but a much larger part of me wants to call you a lunatic and suggest you hold off on this sort of thing until you have workable equipment.

Like, there have to be at least a few hobos out there who are 10/10 god-tier GM's, but you don't see them running games because trying to play GURPS in an alley full of broken glass when no one has pen and paper is just too much of a pain in the dick.
>>
You toy the can back and forth between your hands, jazz on the radio doing little to lessen the palpably awkward silence.

"So," you say, breaking the moratorium, "what's your take on the mission? Think this lead's going to pay off?"

Deg turns back to face you, sitting hunched on the edge of the dashboard. He takes another deep drink and nods, wincing at the contents.

"I'd say so, yeah. Winston's might be a rubberskin but his head's on straight, least as straight as one of them can be. If it's not a relic, it'll probablybe something else good, even information pays these days if you got the right buyer."

*csssk* hisses the can as you crack it open with an alloyed digit, "and do you actually *have* the right buyer?"

Deg responds by waving his hand around in a vaguely reassuring way, in the way that someone telling you "not to worry about it" is reassuring; that being, not at all.

"What do you know about the Kerls system?"

"Besides the fact that it's a bunch of empty rocks in the middle of nowhere, with some Cetaceans digging holes in said empty rocks? Not a lot, can't say. It's out towards Freerock, only about a four hour jump away. Real dirty space out there, Kerls is on the very edge of it so it shouldn't be too hairy."

He takes another swig, and tosses it towards the bin. It clatters against the wall a half a metre to its left.

"Wanna know what really worries me though? S'been words, you know, just rumours and such, about Corvid patrol boats going dark just a ways past where we're headed. Just completely disapppearing into the night. Heard it was Alliance, but why the hell would they be picking off random patrols in the asscrack of the Spin Ends?"

You shake your head, "beats the hell out of me."

Despite your nonchalance, something nags at the back of your mind. Something...

Something.
