Stage 106: How To, How Not To, and Pearls.

You're name is Ryuu Ryukusa, and you're on the horns of a dilemma.

Not literally, as you have no idea what a dilemma would actually look like, but you're definitely having issues at the moment. The problem is you have a sword, inside another sword, that needs to be taken out, but you can't do it by taking apart the hilt. Replacing things is one thing, but dismantling a kami would be dangerous, and not just for the kami in question.

Wakaba must have known the sword she was carrying was more than it seemed, and you suspect that if she had fought Hebiki Akari she would have used that secret weapon on her rather than on you. The name of the weapon is ominous enough to suggest that Stone dragonettes should fear it: Gendai-no-Muteki-no-Buki, Invincible Weapon of the Present Age. That says something about it's nature as well – it's a young weapon, though old enough to be a kami. The damaged blade that concealed it was also a kami, but that was possibly due to having traveled with you through a Hell. The middle of the blade is broken open, exposing the dull brown metal hidden within. But it's a small opening, and doesn't give you much to work with.

At the moment, a little more than half of your current group are performing a series of dances and offerings and ceremonies to invoke the blessings of Ryujin-Owatatsumi on the behalf of the Ama, the pearl divers of Mikimoto Pearl Island. The heavy drumbeats that fill the courtyard are audible even tucked away within the temple as the remainder of your family (and yourself) are. Akari is sleeping peacefully, her body mending well on it's own now, while Yuuhi is watching you curiously, her bright eyes glittering in reflected sunlight and dozens upon dozens of incense sticks.

The same dragonne that injured Akari damaged the outer shell of the sword you are currently studying as it lays across your lap, and while the Stone dragonne is dead, he has certainly left his marks in the world. Distracting him as Akari set him up for a killing blow worked wonders, but the lasting impressions upon Akari and the sword are a great deal less wonderful, especially since you have to get the rest of the metal off without damaging the interior blade.

Which leaves you right where you started – nowhere.

[] Yuuhi owns a nodachi; ask her advice.
[] Consult the weapon herself; she might have an opinion.
[] See if you can use your sapphire claws to flake the outer part away.
[] Maybe try Stone Eyes and see if there is a weakness.
[] Contact a weapon-smith; it might be roundabout, but you know one or two.

Using other kinds of Eyes is already taxing within a Barrier, outside, it's an energy sink.

Maybe after this we should open a Barrier and use Fire Eyes, though. It should allow us to see the blade without anything hidden

friendly reminder that we need to lewd the kiki sometime soon. We haven't in a long while.
>>
Come to think of it, since the opponent who damaged the outer blade was a weaponsmith, maybe his technique had special perks to break weapons.

Also, did we ask Kiku for how to properly free the Kami? I remember we told Buki we needed to know if there was proper rites to do it

I'm not sure she knew about it. Even if she did, I doubt she'd have something to free it.
>>
>>43807710
You think she's getting impatient then? Poor first wife.
>>
>>43807759
Wakaba made the blade and obvious made it this way so that the outer covering could serve as a functional blade while the inner core could be revealed at some point, possibly during combat.
>>
>>43807786
Indeed, she's done really well these last couple of threads too. Confronting her doctor fears etc etc

Under the Sea was a couple night ago, in-story.

Not that she shouldn't be adored and doted constantly, but I don't think she's impatient.

>>43807793

What?

It was never said she did so. And the way the blade was hidden was so that it couldn't be revealed unless the outer blade was damaged.
>>
>>43807850

Addentum: The first post of this thread does say that Ryukusa think Wakaba knew, and would have used the hidden blade, but not that she was the one who hid it.
>>
>>43807814
we lewded kiku on the beach not kiki, or did we get around to both? I don't remember

Metal is still linkef to Void, right?

>>
>>43807910

We took both of them on the lewd trip. And then we took Kiki a second time to see the mermaids
>>
>>43807850
It's a suspicion of mine that this is the case. It is obvious to me because someone doesn't just run around with this kind of weapon and expect to be treated normally if the blade's bite equals or exceeds it's bark.

Part of the strength of such a weapon would be unleashing it suddenly, without warning, thus either hitting the blade in the right way or using a technique.
>>
It's sad, but I don't think Mermaid Hime would want to go on a date with us.
>>

“Yuuhi-chan?” You already had her attention, but her tail flicks up and floats slowly down, the long silk flowing with the slightest movement. Her ears pivot forward too, making her all the more alert seeming.

Which might not mean anything, but it's hard to tell.

“How would you go about removing a steal coating or seal over a sword like this? I've never seen anything like it.” She stands up from a cross legged position without using her hands, wand walks over to you, kneeling in front of you. Turning the blade over so the edge faces you, and using your left hand, you offer her the sword carefully.

Taking it with casually, she turns the sword over in her right hand a few times, looking at the edge, the back, and the steel blade that encases the real one, as well as the damaged portion. You blocked a punch with that, and you hope Sakomu-sensei is suffering in Yomi for having killed the kami that had inhabited the blade before. Though it might not have truly killed her – it could have transformed her, released her to be what she should have been before. Kiku-chan wasn't all that much help; kami are weird even to those who worship them.

Yuuhi offers the blade back to you, looking unhappy. “I haven't seen anything like this, except for maybe some of the first swords that were crafted using the layering methods. Makuri, or maybe Gomai....no, not Gomai, there's not a separation at the back. It's almost like....” She pauses, and you wait for a moment.
>>
>>43807977
Two minutes.

Three.

“Yuuhi-chan?”

“Huh? Oh. Laminated. It's like it's laminated but what's inside is a lot stronger than what's outside. Normally you have a softer core and a harder exterior, for flexibility. This is....this is dumb, that's what this is.” She nods sagely. “I wouldn't be caught dead trying to use something like this because I'd have killed the person who was using it.”

[] You're pretty bloodthirsty sometimes, for an immortal.
[] So, that would be a no, you have no ideas?
[] Could you use Ghost Fire to burn just the outer layer away?
[] Thank you, Yuuhi-chan, petting for you.

[+] Definitely discuss the Stone dragonette aspect.

While you've generally given up trying to decipher some of the stranger things she's said, this last one is kind of baffling. “So....I'm guessing that means you're not sure how to get the steel off?” She blinks and nods an agreement to your question. “Okay. Well, thank you, Yuuhi-chan, that tells me more of what I needed to know at least. Though it was a Stone dragonette that was using it. Would that make more sense?”

That seems to draw her attention back to the katana. “How skilled was she?” Unfortunately – or perhaps fortunately – you never found out the answer to that particular question. She offered once, but you decided you liked living at the time.

“Well, I would say she was at least skilled enough to feel confident about using it to try and kill Akari-niji-chan. She might have been crazy, but I don't think she was foolhardy.” Yuuhi-chan glances at Akari, then back to the sword, a thoughtful expression on her delicate features. “Does that make a difference?”

A simple and single nod of affirmation is all you get at first, but she seems to discard any concern for the steel itself, laying her hands along the back of the blade and lifting it to try and peer along the edges of the cracks in the blade where the inner blade is exposed. She turns the blade down, and studies the brown metal carefully. Then she tastes it, which you really hadn't expected her to do for real, though you suspected she might want to.

Smacking her lips a few times she looks up at the ceiling, then sticks her tongue out. “Bleah.” Then she presses her thumbnail into the exposed edge of the inner blade, what little there is. She immediately yanks her hand abck and sticks her thumb in her mouth. “Aouph. 'Z shaawph.”

You can't say that any of THAT was unexpected. “Well, yes, but does that help?”
>>
>>43808461
“'Z mawve fwom piepanihum ameephee.”

You blink at her, and then prompt her when you realize she's not going to explain. “What?”

She pulls her thumb out of her mouth. “It is made from titanium, aniki.” She looks at her injured extremity and tsks. “It is not pure, but it is definitely flexible and strong enough for two Stone dragonette to fight with it and not have it break. Probably was just going to break the outside over Akari-san's body, and hurt her with it while she did that.”

[] That helps a lot, actually!
[] So it would be okay to break it out the easy way.
[] Would that be ritualistic killing to sanctify the blade or something?
[] Kiku-chan said the kami changed; would doing that change it more?
[] Hey wait, when did you learn about modern metallurgy?!

Damn. I imagine the face of our old teacher if we had attacked him and he got pierced by titanium.

On the other hand, the fact it's titanium either mean spirits or spirit-children had the method to craft it for a fairly long time, or that the kami is entirely the result of our trip.

Or it's a kami trapped in a modern blade. Also possible
>>
>>43808731
Isn't Titanium not used in weapons for a reason? Isn't it more brittle than steel or something?
>>
>>43808774

It is as strong as steel, but less dense
>>

It isn't. Titanium is not reputed to forge well. It needs to be smelted in an argon bath. If you are familiar with the Rockwell scale of hardness, I have only seen titanium blade getting a hardness of like 35, whereas my fancy knife of hugeness has an edge hardness of like 58.

[X] Would that be ritualistic killing to sanctify the blade or something?
[XX] Kiku-chan said the kami changed; would doing that change it more?
[X] Hey wait, when did you learn about modern metallurgy?!

“Would that be ritualistically sanctifying or desecrating the blade, or do you think that it was more like some secret attack method to give Wakaba-san an edge against Akari?” You're not really surprised when she shrugs, though you get the impression she's not answering because she isn't supposed to. You're not quite sure why that would be, but the sense of it is quite strong. “Well, Kiku-chan said the kami changed when the blade was broken. That does suggest that it would change more if you broke it out of the sword that way.”

The subtle rewording seems to allow her to speak a little more freely. You're tempted to go back over other conversations you've had with her at a later date. “The more used a blade is, the more useful the blade is for that thing, aniki. So, if you used it to kill Stone dragonettes, it might develop a taste for their lives, I guess. Like the Muramasa swords, or Ame-no-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi.” You suppress a shudder. Holding that blade for the little time you did told you enough of that story to last a lifetime.

“Thanks a lot, Yuuhi-chan, that helped.” you take the blade back from her, then set it carefully and properly to the side on a cloth before rising onto your knees and giving Yuuhi-chan a warm hug. You stroke her hair and her ears quiver and collapse, her tail waving back and forth.

….

You pull back suddenly. “Wait, when did you become familiar with modern techniques and metals!? I thought you were stuck in Horobi's palace for hundreds of years!”

>It was probably made by a master outside of Japan (or possibly a master who wasn't Japanese, but believed in Shinto?).
Or it could be a Japanese master who decided to use modern forging methods and equipment, to create a blade that not only replicates the artistic qualities of the Kamakura Period, but surpasses them in speed of construction, balance, and combat durability.

[X] ask her if she would accept the duty with full honors
[+] Offer to okay it with Shoko, or even have Shoko officiate if it might be more acceptable.

You lay your cheek along her head, and your horn rubs up against one of her laid-back ears, which gives you a nice little tingle. “Yuuhi-chan....” you murmur softly, your hand sliding through her soft hair firmly and gently. She 'humms?' at you in a sleepy sort of way. “Yuuhi-chan....would you be okay with officially becoming my samurai? In front of the rest of our family?”

Yuuhi pulls back, slowly, her eyes bright and wide. “You mean take the proper oaths and bow and give you my swords and take my swords back and-” Gently you put your hand over her mouth, but she continues on for some dozen seconds despite that. When you nod solemnly and drop your hand, her cheeks go bright red and she clasps her hands together and starts babbling again.

“Ohmykami I get to be a real for true samurai again and serve under my master who is a mistress now but that's okay and I get to learn things from sensei again and Shoko gets to be official and everything and I get to wear my o-yoroi and and and this is the happiest day of my life it's like I'm getting married ever though I never got married before does this mean I get to be your concubine too or does that mean I have to get a concubine of my own I don't remember all the rules on that when can we do that can we do it real soon please but Akari's hurt so we have to wait until we're back with everyone anyway and-”

This time you physically make her stop talking using both hands and staring into her eyes. “Yuuhi! You have to breathe!”
>>
>>43809780
She blinks unevenly, and wobbles a little, before nodding. You let go once more and she takes a deep breath, and then slowly slumps into your arms as you catch her. “Oh, stars,” she comments mildly as she catches her breath. “Sure, aniki, okay.”

You kiss your befuddled and confusing samurai on the head softly. “Thank you, Yuuhi.” She sighs happily and then sits upright and blinks rapidly, her ears perked up. “They're doing the prayers, aniki. We should probably say ours too.”

Glancing at Akari you shake your head. “You go ahead, but don't leave the temple, Yuuhi-chan. I'll sit by Akari and make my offerings a little later.” You've already said your prayers, and while you don't mind saying more, you have things that need to be taken care of still.

“Yes, aniki.” She rises from her seiza position and walks into the temple proper – though you catch a glimpse of her doing a little happy dance and shaking her hands once she's past you. Apparently she's really looking forward to that ceremony.

You take Gendai-no-Muteki-no-Buki, and carefully sheathe her, then pick up the few pieces of metal and the cloth you had set her down on before moving over to where Akari lies awake. You know she's awake because you know she isn't sleeping, though she was kind enough to not interrupt your moment with Yuuhi. “How are you feeling, Akari chan?”

“Sore. But I am not in any real pain, aniki. We could leave today, if you want.”

>>
>>43809863
That makes me wonder how big they actually are. They've been descrubed as rather large, and larger than anyone else we've met, save perhaps Amaterasu, but she is asian and that could be relative.
>>
>>43809902
You would be surprised. been thinking about how quests share a lot with VN for a long time now.
>>
>>43809780

> it's like I'm getting married ever though I never got married before

Don't worry, Yuuhi, it'll happen
>>
>>43810044
Except for needing a lot less work for the same length that's true. Without needing to realize unused options it can't really be compared though, both in terms of workload and how you approach it structurally.
>>
>>43810044

Visual Novels are basicaly choose-your-own-adventure works, and quests are based on those.
>>
>>43810001
Er Yin is almost 6' tall, and Kiki is 5' 6"....and Kiki's booms are bigger.

Lucky Ryukuza.
>>
>>43810093
Yeah, I had no doubt they were quite large, regardless of her nationality. Just wasn't sure if they were supposed to be nicely large or obscenely so, you know?
>>
>>43810132
Well I for one wouldn't mind obscenely large. But not everyone is into that
>>
>>43810071
>>43810080
Yeah but the only problem is who much choices effect the plot and the large amount the quest has. If it was made in to a VN the amount would have to be cut dramatically or the work load would be insane.
>>
Kiki is a celebrity. I wonder if she'd like to continue working in this business.

I'm sure Ryukusa would love to have such an amazing model for her fashion work. Of course, everyone should contribute.

>>43810180

Yup. A VN is inherently limited in its possibility, while a quest isn't
>>
>>43810180
Would be an interesting idea for after the quest is finished though. Make a VN about the quest, with some of the other paths that could have been chosen.

Could even include a system like XS's Good stuff/Bad stuff so that you couldn't just pickthe best choices all the time, you had to really work for a good ending.
>>
>>43810274
Nice to imagine but the scope of work would be staggering.
>>
>>43809855
You should check out a program called tyranobuilder that I have been working with. Its a coding free visual novel maker that supports Live2D images like the one I made.

for example me and a coworker made this for a gamejam in one day using a modified version of the yuuhi model. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-zthhtlU7k_VVpPbW80VlFKU1U/view?pli=1

>>43810274
Yeah the good stuff bad stuff could really be pretty cool for a story branch check points.

[XX] Ha ha ha, funny lizard.
[XXX] Kiku and Yui said two days minimum.

“Two days minimum. It's barely been one. You required major surgery, Akari, which is no laughing matter for someone as tough as you are. Even I stayed in bed for two days after losing an arm.” You open up a small lunch basket and start pulling out some sandwich making materials. It's no bento, but it's at last something. “Be a good girl and do as you're told.”

She smiles faintly. “Well, it WAS only an arm, aniki.”

“Ha ha ha. You're a funny little lizard all right.” You lean down and kiss her eyelids, which she closes obligingly for you. “So what do you think about the sword?”

“Can you damage the blade with your sapphire claws?”

She has a point; you haven't tried that yet. You'd definitely want to speak with Buki-san before trying that though. “No, but let's not test that just yet. Maybe as a last resort.”

“Then I think you should follow Yuuhi-chan's suggestion and just break the blade out, aniki.” She rolls onto her side, and winces at the movement, earning her a frown from you. She relaxes when you lay a hand on her shoulder though, the pain fading from her expression naturally, rather than being hidden by her. “You can break it open against your left arm, I think.”

[] She'd really prefer blood, though.
[] Well, that might tame her a bit, sure.
[] I don't really want her to get a taste for hitting ~me~ though.
[] If I could find enough acid that might work.
[] Well, considering you were originally going to serve that purpose....

[XXX] Well, that might tame her a bit, sure.
[X] I don't really want her to get a taste for hitting ~me~ though.
[XX] She'd really prefer blood, though.
[X] Well, considering you were originally going to serve that purpose....
[+] You'll just have to ask her. Though, a suitable sacrifice might be okay....
[+] Kisses, of course. What the hell are you thinking, QM?

You finish the chicken salad sandwich, and then pinch your way around it, just inside the crust, and pressing the filling into the middle. Making, in essence, a dumpling or bun out of it. “While baning things against my head might convince them that there's no talking sense into me, I'd rather not give her a taste for hitting me.” That makes her laugh as she sips at the cool melon soda you brought for her. “Since she'd really prefer blood, I suppose finding the right target might be okay, but on the other hand, she's pretty bloodthirsty already.”

“Mmmhh.” Akari rolls onto her back as you look down at her.

“Well, originally that was going to be you, after all. Though I have to admit I really do like the idea of breakign her open over my cousin's head.” That makes her giggle, the soft melodic noise soothing to the nerves and reassuring to your heart. “I suppose I'll have to make a Barrier and ask her, but that will have to wait until the others are back.” She glances at you in confusion. “Two on you, three on Kiki-hime. That's the rule.”

The pain must be distracting to her, because you catch the shadow of a grimace behind the stoic presentation she usually gives you. You finish the second sandwich/bun/dumpling, and set it aside, stretching out and propping your head up on your elbow to face her. “Hey now, none of that. I haven't come back unscathed since this whole mess started unless there wasn't a fight at all.”
>>
>>43811174
Okay so you're maybe stretching the idea of a 'non-fight' a little there. “You Stone dragonettes might be supposedly invulnerable, but do you know how many people I haven't killed all the time?” You give yourself air-quotes as you continue. “Scarrrry Water dragonette, can't even kill people half the time. I suck balls at this whole psychopathic murdering dragonette thing.”

“Ryukusa, you're such a lily-girl that the concept of sucking balls doesn't even belong in your vocabulary,” Akari murmurs softly, a smile on her delicate lips.

“Oh, big words coming from you, niji-chan. You're such a lipstick lesbian that Yui thinks I'm a guy!” That makes Akari laugh, and she curls over onto her side, the laugh turning into a stifled cough. “Yeah, see, you're going exactly nowhere, my love, and you'll be the better off for it.” You stroke her hair, your fingers brushing the chipped jade of her horns, as you lean close and kiss her softly on the lips.

“Mmm,” she agrees reluctantly, mostly because you're still kissing her. When you do breath the kiss, her blood is warmer and you feel better yourself. Despite the joking and the teasing, you really had a rough morning. “As my lord commands,” she murmurs, and you smile, ducking your head and letting the blush show.

“Ah, now you're just being mean.” You reach over and hand her one of the bun-sandwiches. “Now eat, and I'll make you some tea.” Obediently, your best friend starts eating, and you sit up, getting ready to prepare tea for everyone, as well as for the Dragon Kami who rules over the oceans.

You turn around and Yuuhi is sitting seiza only inches away, and staring at you with wide glowing eyes.

[] ….yes, Yuuhi-chan?

Argh, ignore this, 4chan held my post for longer then it should have.
>>
[XX] Feed her too.
[X] Stare back.

You stare back, not entirely sure where this situation is going, much less where it came from. Yuuhi seems unnaturally adept at sneaking up on you, which is more than a little impressive, not to mention unnerving as all heaven. She simply sits there, and you sit there as well. She finally opens her mouth to speak and you put a sandwich in it.

Bewildered, Yuuhi bites into the sandwich and chews, and then opens her mouth to speak again, which is when you put the sandwich back in her mouth. Her expression upgrades from 'bewildered' to 'totally confused', while Akari is watching the entire scene with her usual aplomb. Yuuhi takes another bite, and chews, then swallows. She sits there, looking at you, her expression clearing. Once again she tries to say something but you counter with sandwich.

Finally she takes the sandwich out of your hand and takes a bite, lowering it and chewing slowly. As expected, she starts to say something, which is when you place the cup of tea against her lips, and carefully serve it to her. She swallows, blinking rapidly and looking totally lost. When you lower the tea, she looks at the sandwich, then at the tea, and takes the tea from you, and begins eating properly.
>>
>>43811497
You then continue to make tea for the rest of your family, who are returning from the ceremonies, smiling happily, looking beautiful in their red and white costumes, and surrounded by both serenity and liveliness, bringing that with them into the temple and spreading it with every step and every breath. Akari looks up at you and smiles, accepting another of the sandwich-bun-things you've made for her. You didn't want either of them thinking about the realization you had seconds after Yuuhi opened her mouth, and the return of the miko and your priestess will help.

Because the fact that you haven't eaten anything in several days is extremely unsettling, even to you.
