Announcement, a retcon, and a fix.

Most immediately, I answered the pile-up of questions in the ask.fm but I want to clarify regarding cats and dogs; dogs are definitely rare, cats are less so but feral populations do persist. Cats have a decreased life span and a number of parasites and predators compete with or openly attack the feral populations but as cats themselves represent such a good evolutionary template that pseudo-cats exist in places with no actual feline population I think it is reasonable that they would survive into the future.

Pic related: A mongoose that has evolved cat-like features.

As for the first retcon, the Elevon definitely has a back seat. I know the picture I posted lacks one but there is a small backseat that I referred to several times since it first appeared. It was always intended to have one and I apologize for any confusion the image may have caused.

The second retcon is that a gas mask and taser that were missing from your inventory after you picked them off the body of the dead Scyth in the vets office have been restored. To make up for this, I also added a single taser grid to your stock.

An exterminator, a little girl, and a pedophile get into a car. Your situation is the punchline.

Robert sits beside you in the passenger seat, head lolling back and forth with the motion of the car. Silver line of drool drizzles on his bare chest, his shirt having again been tied around his wrists. His daughter is in the backseat, laid out on her side. She hasn’t been conscious for several hours now but her breathing seems steady enough.

You’re descending once more from Tai Mo Shan, trying to concentrate as you struggle not to get too involved in the turns. Robert represents a major ace for you now that you’ve holo-recorded his confession and, if you turn him over to Crusty you’ll have given them the leverage they desire over Vice Administrator Shan.

On the other hand, an innocent man goes on trial this Saturday for a crime the Shans commited. If you handed over Robert to them, they might be able to set the record straight. Alternately, you could try and use Robert’s knowledge to get some evidence exposing Mrs. Shan herself…

Regardless, you need to satisfy Mrs. Shan’s call for the death of her husband before she blows the bomb in your neck.

None of these choices seem very good…

>call Lopez
>call Amanda
>Kill Robert, bring his corpse or some other trophy back for Mrs. Chan

This is the only option that buys back sonfu.

Also, might Shan be helicopter-ing over Vince's current neck-GPS is?
>>
I've been contemplating exterminator quest entirely too much. Constraints:

- Can't be GPS-tracked by an anxious Shan, seen visiting those burial sites.
- Can't be caught by Scyths with a tranked child and an imprisoned adult.

Solution: Contact Crusty. Have him come and pick up Mr Shan and the recorded confessions as the fulfillment of the bargain, debt repaid. Say he can guide you to burial sites. And hey, maybe he can be useful as a lab rat to test what happens when Jeremy's spores infect a human being... try to develop a vaccine to immunize against it that way.

Alternate solution, risking Scyth collision: Ask if Crusty can do his GPS-fudging trick again so it looks like Vince, and his van, are both not where they're actually going? Staying put here, or stopping to eat lunch somewhere.

To soothe your mind, you switch on the radio. Unfortunately, this has the exact opposite effect.

“Recent reports seem to indicate that what the Russian President previously claimed were peace-keeping forces actually represent militarily significant build-up of force in what most American analysts now publicly deem the “puppet states” of Europe. Additionally, naval exercises are being conducted further to the south by the resurgent Russian Navy than ever before.”

Damn ruskies. They just can’t keep those sabers sheathed, can they?

The report continues, seguing into discussion of the instability of the current American President's regime and the growing view that he is "weak" in the face of foreign aggression.

You pull up Crusty on the communicator and he answers almost immediately. His surroundings are suspiciously vague; the backdrop to his face is an inky blackness but he is lit well enough that he’s obviously not in actual darkness.

<It is good to see you so soon, Vincent.>

<I wish I could say the same. Listen, I have some evidence that you can leverage against the Vice-Administrator but we need to discuss how you intend to use it.>

<You really think you can try and negotiate with us even further on this?>

<I don’t have a choice. I’m already under some duress, so I need this meet to happen immediately in a place that won’t look suspicious to anyone tracking me via GPS.>

<I see. Maybe a parking garage?>

<No… Where did you bring me that it didn’t arouse any suspicion the first time?>

<I can’t tell you… I can only say that it appeared innocuous to anyone watching you.>

<Whatever, I was thinking we could meet at a hardware store.>

<A hardware store?>

<It’s not unusual for me to have to pick up extra implements while on the job.>

You pull up the coordinates of the nearest such store on your phone and send them to Crusty.

<I’ll be in the parking lot, driving an Elevon.>

<An Elevon? Are you a grandpa now?>

<Uh…>

<I kid, it is a good car. I will send someone in my stead. Look for a scarred man outside the store. He will be the contact.>

The call terminates and you motor in the direction of the store you selected, mulling how you’re going to approach this “contact”.

You park the Elevon close to the entrance of the store. It doesn’t seem very crowded and you have no difficulty in catching the eye of the Chinese heavy as you pick out a shopping cart. He doesn’t follow right away but instead gives you a little time to browse the store alone before reappearing in an employee uniform.

Unlike Zheng, he’s more tall than he is thick with a square face. Overall he fits your imaginations image of the comically oversized Chinese peasant except for the scars that creep up from the collar of his shirt.

“Can I help you find something?”

His english, notably, is impeccable.

“Yeah, actually. I’m looking to trade something in for one of your products but I need to get it into “working condition” first.”

“What seems to be the problem with it?”

“Well, there are some mechanical issues that need to be resolved so that it can be started without blowing up in anyone’s face.”

“I see.”

“And even though I intend to trade it in, I need to bring something just like it home to show to the wife.”

“Um.”

“Because the wife wants me to prove that I got the tool fixed so she can use it.”

“You’re stretching this conceit quite a lot, sir. Maybe you could show me the tool in question so that we can work out your issues?”

“Yeah… it’s out in my car.”

“Yes.”

“That’s good… but we would really rather have him alive. He could be a gold mine.”

“I already told you, I need to bring his corpse back. Or at least prove he died somehow. Besides, I can’t have you blackmailing Shan unless there’s some way for you to protect me.”

“Well, if we’re going to be blackmailing her anyway, the obvious thing to do would be to convince her to keep you alive, wouldn’t it?”

>Yeah, I guess we could do that

“I don’t have a lot of good options, Fang. If I go along with what you’re saying, I’m making the assumption that Shan is a lot more reasonable than anything I’ve seen would suggest.”

“So what’s your alternative?”

“We need to fake his death somehow. Fast. And make it convincing.”

“That… is a serious demand. How would you intend to pull that off?”

“You mean your creepy shadow organization wouldn’t know how?”

“We might but it’s awfully short notice. I mean taking a man and-”

A customer walks past Fang Lo and he quickly switches gears.

“Let me consult with my manager about this.”

He pulls a communicator from his hijacked uniform that looks a lot like yours and types a long message into it. A beat passes. Then the communicator vibrates slightly.

“We can do it but we’d need a high quantity of refined tetradotoxin and a meat locker. I don’t know how we’d get the tetrado-”

“I’ve got the tetradotoxin. I just need you to supply the meat locker.”

“I… I can do that. Give me an hour to get things ready and we’ll reconvene after I give you the go-ahead via your communicator?”

“Sounds good.”

“Great!”

Fang seems really happy that this has gone so smoothly. It’s kind of goofy to watch.

“In the meantime,” you continue, “I’ll hold onto Robert. And I want an update on Jeremy’s well-being when I see you next.”

“Easy enough. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go return this uniform.”

He trots off with a spring in his gangly step.

You exhale, relieved.

Starved, you decide to treat yourself to some real food. A quick search for steak sends you to "Los Cuchillos de Los Gauchos", where you order the special to-go, a decadent sandwich called the "Martin Fierro". The delicately seared cowflesh mingles with chimichurri sauce and avocado in your mouth. God, the Argentines know their meats so well you might just consider them honorary Americans.

Helpfully, it comes with a side of black "gaucho-style" coffee. It's bitter alright, but you can't help but perk up.

>STR/STA +2 to maximum for 8 hours
>Awareness +1 for six hours

The whole package costs you $20 bucks but you have no regrets.

As you lick the last bits of moist meat droppings off your fingers, you inject Robert with another dose of antidote. He comes around a little more slowly this time.

"Ugh, what smells so good."

"Nothing, pervert. But I have good news! I've decided to spare your life. The only catch is we have to fake your death first."

"Ah... and how is that going to happen?"

"I've got people working on it. In the meantime, I thought maybe we could chat."

"Let's start with Mrs. Shan. Tell me everything you've got on her."

"Uh, well she's something of an obsessive. Not very good at seeing the big picture outside of how it relates to her own goals."

"No, I mean something I can use."

"You want to blackmail her?"

"What I want to do is none of your business. I just want everything you know."

"Huh. Well, I think I already mentioned her little collection of mementos..."

"You did no such thing."

"Oh, well sometimes she would... hold onto things. Like I said, she did most of the evidence disposal and I think she would take trophies sometimes. Little... bits. I have no idea where she keeps them though. She never told me."

He continues to give you a long list of Mrs. Shan’s other habits. A secret amphetamine stash, criminal contacts he only met once or twice during their long marriage, and constant series of experiments with different nootropics manufactured by a mutual friend.

“I tried them once or twice,” he admits, “but they made me feel funny after a while.”

“Yeah, I’m sure. Why did you finally decide to run anyway? What tipped you off?”

“Well, when I came home we had a fight. She’d obviously been sleeping with someone while I was out with the children because I found her passed out in bed. I tried to get her to calm down but… she escalated. Enlisted the boys against me and they all threatened my life together. I had to run… so I grabbed Jess and beat it. It’s a big city… I thought maybe I could take her and go off the grid.”

"These criminals your wife associates with.. did you get any of their information?"

"One was a trafficker and the other got things for her... A smuggler of another stripe I guess. I don't have their names but the smuggler called himself The Heron."

"Stupid name."

"Tell him that. The nootropics fellow.. that was Barry. I've got his number, you can take it down if you like. He had a whole synth setup but was pretty discerning about his clients."

You add the number to your contacts. Could come in handy later.

"Okay, interviews over. We've got an appointment to keep."

You keep him awake this time, though it's a real pain to keep him quiet during the drive. Fang Lo is waiting for you outside the brick building, smoking a cigarette in a butcher's apron. The man sure has a way of changing outfits on the regular.

He guides you around back and through a loading dock to a meat locker with an impressive steel door.

A chair is already waiting among the hanging animal carcasses and Fang quickly secures Robert to it before taking you aside and behind a nearby aisle, where a number of different murder implements, a large cooler, and a diminutive Chinese man with a tray full of immaculate surgical tools are all waiting are waiting.

"Mr. Esperanza, did you bring the toxin?"

You produce a single tranquilizer dart from your pocket.

"It's not the only ingredient but it is the main one. I think it'll do the trick."

"You better hope so. Listen, turn on your holorecorder and shoot or stab him as close to the heart as you can. We have back-up organs here and Jim will put them right in, using the cold and your tetrodoxin to keep the patient in stasis during the surgery. Got it?"

You take the gun that Fang has helpfully provided and examine it.

"We figured you wouldn't want to use your own."

"You're right, but you're sure this won't be used against me?"

"I promise. If we wanted to frame you, you're already using our guns technically."

That doesn't make you feel much better but you accept it and step out of the aisle.

"It's ah, pretty cold in here, ah."

That's Robert. He's still not wearing his shirt and is quivering in the low temperatures of the meat locker.

"Yup," you reply, calmly pulling back the hammer with your thumb while you ready the holorecorder for another go.

You shoot a round into a hanging pig carcass not far from where Robert is sitting. He flinches.

"See how real that is?"

"Yeah. Wait... I thought you weren't going to kill me."

The look of panic that crosses his eyes as you turn the holorecorder on is priceless.

He goes still demanding that you wait, a neat red hole appearing in his chest where the heart ought to be. He jerks back and then slumps forward and you cut the recording. Jim rushes forward with your dart, an IV, and everything he needs to start operating.

Fang claps you on the shoulder.

"Good work, comrade. Are you sure you don't want something to take back?"

"Jim! Take an ear!"

A snip.

"Uh, I think that'll be enough."

"Good, good. And you wanted word on Jeremy, right? He's doing fine according to Crusty, although he's starting to request new cartridges for his Nintendo..."

"Wait, he had it with him the whole time?!"

"I guess so."

You should have known that a kid his age would be inseparable from their portable gaming system. And...

"Um, are you saying he's awake?"

"Yeah, he actually regained consciousness faster than we expected. Crusty says full recovery is a ways off, but he's definitely awake."

Oh, thank god.

"That's... great news. Listen, just give me those trophies and-"

<Hey, does he want the old heart?> Jim shouts.

"Do you?"

"I... sure. Just pack it on ice with the rest and I'll stick it in the car."

Wow, I stopped following around thread 4. Didn't think protag would survive this long.

You load the cooler the passenger seat of the Elevon and scram. There’s no good reason to be hanging around this butcher shop longer than you have to. Besides, a little haste should make your cover story more convincing.

Jess is still completely asleep in the back seat and you feel a little weird about handling her father’s body parts so close to her. But you focus.

The drive is fairly quick; the job was on the outer rim of Kowloon as Devlinson promised. You’re feeling kind of relieved as you pull up behind your own van, which has been parked here for hours but quickly become annoyed when you find that someone has graffitied it with the slogan <Exterminate American Pigs!>.

Ingrates.

The property you’re supposed to work on is dated, built from stone over two world wars ago. It’s damn sturdy though and you’re greeted at the door by an extremely gracious couple who offer you tea and explain that they own this entire property, which is rented out to 6 different families. They also explain their long-running friendship with Devlinson and what a great man he is to send you here.
Many years of con work have made you an expert at looking interested while dying of boredom internally. When they finally guide you to the double-bolted steel door to the basement, you’re almost relieved. Almost.

Choose your loadout:

>Alternately, construct something from your inventory. Take two "medium sized items" (examples: Wrangling stick, sniper rifle, both chinese specs count as one) and up to 4 small items (examples: pepper spray, screecher box, two grenades, brass knuckles)

Also, decide if you want to wear your hazmat or the military gear.

Reminder that you can wear the armor under the hazmat suit but not the helmet and the haz-mat suit.

Domestic Recommendation.

But switch out poison sprayer for bait.

Wear hazmat.

Although, for Shan cover story sake, we shouldn't give any living specimens over to GEC this time. Maybe sell one to Crusty.

But these rats supposedly ate incriminating meat and should be full.

Picking the loadout is never very popular is it?

Writing.
>>
>>43799215

You change into your hazmat suit and outfit yourself with the basics of your gear, making sure to take a bag of bait with you.

The basement is quite dark, the only natural light being let in by sunken windows along the edge of the property. You find a light switch at the bottom of the stairs and turn it on, as two things catch your eyes.

One, this place looks like a dungeon. All the surfaces are stone or concrete, with no human touches or furniture whatsoever. The only adornment are piles of rat feces and bones. Everything reeks of rotting meat.

Two, a black shape in the furthest corner of the room which, as you get closer, stretches itself out and begins scrabbling at high speed towards a hole in the badly chewed door that connects this main area to some sort of side section of the basement.

>Failure!

You lunge forward with the wrangling stick to try and scoop up the oversized rat before it dives beneath the door but to no avail. A frenzied orgy of squeaking ensues from behind the door and you can hear a great deal of movement…

>roll a trank grenade under the door
>break the door down
>toss a bag of bait through

You quickly pull the pin on one of your trank grenades and toss it under the door. A few thuds follow as the rats inside hit the ground and then you push open the door to examine what you find within.

There are seven rats here, of a lithe and weasel-like subtype that you've never seen before. One is obviously pregnant, though you don't see any babies around. Seems like the infestation hasn't gone on long enough for that or...

You note several rat skeletons in varying degrees of completeness throughout this room and numerous empty cans. It looks like after the owners shut them away down here, they lacked the incisors to gnaw through the metal door or stone foundations and turned on one another. You wouldn't be surprised if the original entry point was one of sunken windows and the rats were simply unable to climb back out after they got down here to reach the food stores in this little pantry room.

Close inspection of the rats also reveals that what you initially thought were sores are actually infestations of masses pinhead sized mites, that immediately attempt to leap onto you while you handle the rats.

Looks like you did the right thing by wearing the hazmat suit.

With the rats subdued, what do you want to do with them?

>get them outside somehow and burn them
>take the pregnant one and slide it out the window so you can transport it to the van
>try and take all of them in the van
>write-in
>>
>>43799727
>try and take all of them in the van

make a point of burning the skeletons though. leave nothing.

pretend those were the ones you fed the body to.

So this counts as multiple specimens really, with the mites...

which are immune to being tranked?

Lessee if crusty wants an infested rat for 600bux.
>>
>>43799727
>>get them outside somehow and burn them
They got rid of everything else.
>>
Rolled 1 (1d2)

>>43799779
>>43799808

1 for take all
2 for get rid of them
>>
>>43799855

Leaving the rats where they lay for the moment, you quickly check yourself for any mites that might be trying to hitch a ride and, when you're satisfied that you've gotten them all off, you head upstairs to inform the owners that you've... oh, they're all knocked out. The wife is sitting placidly on the couch with her eyes shut but the husband seems to have collapsed in the kitchen, narrowly missing the hot surfaces of his electric stove with his face.

You quickly turn off the heat and look around for a large container you might move the rats in. You're only able to find a cardboard box that can barely hold more than two muta-rats at once and isn't exactly "secure" but it'll have to do.

It takes you four trips to get all the rats into your van and, when it's all over, you burn the box and spray the basement for mites. You'd spray the inside of your van too but that would surely kill the rats... Looks like you're going to have to suffer another decon.

>END THREAD

Sorry for ending early here but the thread has died down a bit and I'm feeling a little fatigued.

Anyway, I'll stick around. I was thinking about running again this week anyway or maybe running the racing quest I've been working on, even though that seems premature..
>>
>>43799961
The thread ebbs and resurges in size all the time though. I was just making dinner damn.

Now, to debrief, and then report back to Chez Shan.

And hey Vince can use real gym equipment for Getting Fit now if he can hang around at the House of Murder.

It's not your fault anon, I'm just being a bit of a baby about this. A lot of improvisation went on today and given the rapidly increase in complexity of the plot, I'm feeling a bit drained.

Which again, is babyish. I run once a week, there's no reason for me to improvise anything except that now the GF wants me to write her a kind of play by post quest via her email so she has something to do at work and I keep tinkering with different stories.

Of course, I've always wanted to write everyday so I can't complain too much. I just need to be more anticipatory.

>>43800089

Yup, my family is celebrating tomorrow anyway so I should have time on turkey day.

What kind of scheduling would anons like?
>>
>>43800160
Can you do Wednesday like usual?
>>
>>43800210

Peeeee-robably.

Tomorrow will be busy (I volunteer in the morning and then will have to cook the rest of the day) but if I make time for it, I should be able to put together quite a bit by Wednesday.
>>
>>43800243
So Vince needs to stop at MedCorp to get his nose checked.

Return the Shan.

Get Clarissa's exposition.

Possibly buy a termite habitat and shop for a new, secure apartment with strong doors.

And I guess there's Vince's Friday assignment to plan in case the day manages to ever actually end.
>>
>>43800336

Don't forget you'll be getting your first enhanced paycheck.

And you guys really should find a place to sleep or at least check in on your apartment.
>>
>>43800384
I wanted to. Wednesday night.

And hey we have the Shan house to sleep in right. We'll have to cook for them tonight and pretend not to know all their horrible secets.
>>
>>43800160
>a kind of play by post quest
So that's just 1-on-1 GMing.
>>
>>43801099

Pretty much. There isn't much of a system though, so I'm reluctant to call it a game or even GMing. CYOAing is kinda clunky and I'm not even sure what that means on /tg/ these days.

I guess its a case of semantic confusion.

Repeatedly underestimating how far trank gas can spread before it's harmless.

Gotta start telling people to step outside when he starts exterminating, just in case he uses gas at all.
