Your name is Takashi Wakui. You are a sixteen-year old, Japanese high school student living in a world where half of humanity possesses Personas—manifestations of inner souls as demons, spirits or deities. In the past, you had been one of the unlucky ordinaries lacking a Persona. Then a game called AETHER was forcibly installed on your smartphone. Initially it appeared to be little more than a piece of nasty spyware, extremely persistent and impossible to remove.

Then it sucked you into to a realm called the Blackened Void, where you fought Shadows and gained your first Persona--Ippon-Datara of the Fool Arcana, the degraded blacksmith demon god. Now you are the Wild Card of the 22nd Century, capable of wielding Personas of each Major Arcana. Turns out AETHER is more than a simple, reality-immersive game; it is an accursed phenomenon superimposing itself over an otherworldly realm, consisting of vicious monsters, decrepit ruins and glamorous treasures. And to make matters worse, you and several others have been condemned as its chosen Players.

For what purpose does the game exist, what mysteries lie within and how will you Players achieve victory?

“NOW ARRIVING AT AREA 019. THE HOLLOW EXPRESS WISHES ALL TRAVELLERS AN ENJOYABLE DAY.” The voice of the battered and wrecked train’s announcer is reminiscent of the agonized coughs belonging to a dying man, if it were recorded with an ancient DVD and then corrupted a few times. “AREA 019 IS A PLEASANT…WONDERFUL…PLACE FULL OF…of…offfffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff….”

Static explodes from the intercom. A shrieking, piercing mass of noise assaults you and your fellow Players. It is like being caught inside a jet turbine full of gravel and dirt. Then, as quickly as the horrid sound had appeared, it shuts off, leaving only silence behind.

You stand up from your hole-ridden seat. You look at your fellow Players. Akikazu hasn’t moved from his place against the wall, his eyes closed. Celeste is putting her headphones away in her bag, muttering the lyrics to one of her J-pop songs. You equip your knuckledusters.

“Let’s go.” You say.

“Right!” Celeste exclaims with a big smile.

“Yeah…” Akikazu grunts.

You lead the team towards the train door, an entity resembling two pieces of scrap metal stitched together with superglue, and hop out of it. You make your way across the deserted station platforms. The place is dark and grimy, to nobody’s surprise. Only flickering fluorescent lights, encased in decaying plastic tubes, illuminate the way to the exit. Previous stations weren’t exactly filled to the brim with glorious sunlight, but Area 019’s seems to be entirely shrouded in darkness. As Celeste nearly trips over Akikazu, eliciting a gasp of confusion from the former and a growl of annoyance from the latter, you can’t help but think this place is a real pain to get through.

The air clogged with dust and mold isn’t helping any matters. Even so, you endure it. What you are experiencing is nothing compared to what Fumika is going through. Granted, you don’t actually know what’s happened to her. Perhaps AETHER has thrown yet another curveball. But if it’s anything like Celeste’s or Akikazu’s entries then it’s definitely not pleasant.

You wonder what’s she’s doing now. Has she barely awoken, pain in her body and confusion running through her mind as she takes in her unfamiliar surroundings? Is she already progressing through the tutorial, scowling as she takes in the chipper, exasperating pre-recorded voice? Maybe she’s already fighting Shadows with her preferred weapon of choice; never mind that you can’t imagine such a frail looking girl engaging in direct combat.

Or have this sector’s Denizens already captured her and locked her away? Likely so. Shadows are predictable, with their limited vision and short-term memories. Any Player can defeat a group on their own. But Denizens are ruthless and intelligent and that is why they are so dangerous. You cannot imagine Fumika, the girl who sits staring at her laptop all day, winning against one, let alone an entire mob of them.

They are the ones who will eradicate her once the time limit runs out, after all.

The exit of the train station looms ahead. But all that’s in front is an inky blackness. Celeste conjures fire in her hand. Things are made apparent. Such as the part of the wall where the concrete ends and steel begins.

“A tunnel, huh.” You muse out loud. “Guess we’ve arrived.”

“So this sector takes place underground?” Celeste asks. “Mmm…can’t say I’m looking forward to it.”

“There should be a bonfire around here somewhere.” You say. “Let’s keep going.”

You summon fire in your palm to back up Celeste, with considerably more difficulty. The team marches on in silence. Everyone’s weapons are out. You can’t detect any sign of enemies, but in this low visibility environment it doesn’t hurt to keep one’s guard up.

The metal corridor doesn’t last long. After passing under a series of frayed wires and a couple of empty barrels scattered along the path, you and your team reach a massive iron barricade blocking the way. It towers over the three of you, like a giant gazing down at a standard fantasy medieval village.

“Stand back.” Akikazu growls. The card of the Hanged Man forms in his palm. Ubelluris, the mountain god who once carried the edge of the sky on his shoulders, roars to life. It lumbers forward to and presses both its palms against it. He shoves. It isn’t an easy task. The hinges scrape and squeak, almost as if in protest. The ground trembles and shakes. You notice beads of sweat dripping down Akikazu’s features. Eventually, the job is done. The path is clear and daylight streaks through.

“Come on.”

You step outside.

Your breath promptly catches in your throat.

To say that you and your fellow Players are standing on the edge of a mountain would be untrue, as it would be vastly underestimating the magnitude of your surroundings. No, from where you stand you there are cliff faces as far as the eye can see. They wrap around the area in a circle, surrounding and enveloping the land below. It is as if a bowl fitting for the giants had been placed in the earth, transformed into solid rock and then only half filled with terrain and soil.

It dawns upon you that Area 019 is in fact located inside a massive crater.
>>
Buildings rest at the bottom; a thousand tiny concrete blocks arranged in neat rows and columns. Some are domed, others are flat. Chimneys rise from what appear to be factories, belching out toxins and chemicals. You look up and see that the sky is covered by a blanket of thick, heavy grey smog. Lights shine in the distance, like a hundred twinkling earthbound stars.

The air is laden with toxins. The wind is cold. The view is spectacular, yet you cannot spot any sign of vegetation or natural growth. A sense of foreboding drops into your stomach. Just what kind of life exists here…?

>SECTOR 3: AREA 019

…so says the map displayed on your phone’s screen. As if you needed another reminder of where you are.

Celeste walks forward and places her hand on the hilt of a rusted bronze sword. A bonfire roars to life. The team gathers around it.

“How far until we catch up with Shibuya?” Akikazu asks.

“According to this…quite a ways to go.” You reply. “If I had to make a guess, she’s somewhere between the second and third bonfires.”

How will you proceed?

How is that different from "doesn't benefit from normal leveling except for Ippon-Datara"? He's not going to be leveling anything except Ippon-Datara and his other Personas. It's not like Takashi himself gets XP, he just gets to share in his Persona's stat gains.

Takashi's other Personas develop in different ways than regular people's. Grinding is possible, but not recommended. That doesn't mean they don't have any potential, however.

Remember how party members in Persona games levelled up quickly, with the MC being an exception due to the stupid amounts of experience his Personas needed? And that the best way to level up his Personas was to fuse them and have them gain the power of his bonds? It's kind of like that.

Living with an Anti-Shadow Operative has taught you a few things about the biggest threat to mankind. It usually happens when Shizuka can’t think of any good topics to bring up and decides to pass the time by telling you about her work. Shadows move around in a ‘base form’, which is generally a blob of shifting goo or a mass of particles clustered together. It is only when they detect do an enemy do they transform into their ‘true form’ –those monstrous and ghastly creatures Shizuka and her squad fight on a regular basis. They are the Hands, the Mayas, the Basalts, the Tables and more.

Most crucially of all, Shadows have a limited attention range and a pathetically short memory. They are easily distracted and this leaves them wide open to a pre-emptive strike. This obviously doesn’t work when they’re clustered to large groups, which is the case on Earth. But in the Blackened Void, where encounters are spread out evenly across the game world…

“Let’s try and move stealthily.” You say. “If we see any Shadows, we’ll try and take them by surprise.” This is the strategy most squads taken when exploring abandoned buildings or other enclosed areas. Area 019 is the complete opposite of that, but it should nonetheless prove useful.

“Works for me.” Akikazu replies. He picks up his hammer and grins. “Hurry up, then. I’m itching to get started.”

That’s not the reason why we’re here Akikazu, you think, but whatever.

You turn to Celeste. “What are you doing?”

“…” Celeste is peering into the bonfire. She hears her words and snaps out of her trance. “Pardon? Oh, nothing. I’m ready to go.”

“Okay…?”

“Oi Tachibana, you’re not cracking up are you?” Akikazu remarks.

“Me? Nope!” Celeste replies. She outstretches her arms. “Look at me, Osaragi-san. I’m perfectly fine!”

You and your fellow Players find a rocky path leading down to the ground level. It twists and turns, threatening to send you tumbling off the cliff edge with its steepness. It’s good thing everyone reaches the ground safely, albeit covered in a layer of grit and dust.

Area 019 is refreshingly open compared to the other sectors. Although you’ve not looking forward to what’s inside those distant buildings.

“Shh!” Celeste raises her finger to her lips. Everyone ducks behind a slab of concrete jutting out of the earth. The first random encounter of the day has arrived. A medium-sized Shadow cluster is lurking out in front. Once it notices you, it might separate into three or four…maybe five individual Shadows.

Its back is facing the team. This is the perfect chance for a pre-emptive strike…

“Alright.” Akikazu smirks, cracking his knuckles and raising the hammer as if he was Thor thimself. “I’m gonna beat that fucker in a pulp—”

“No.” You say. “I’ll take care of this.”

“What? Why?”

“Keep your voice down!” Celeste hisses.

“Look, do you want to be ganked by five Shadows at once?” You don’t wait for him to reply. “Yeah, didn’t think so. I’ll punch them and try and stun them. Then we’ll attack them all at once.”

“Be careful…” Celeste warns.

“I will.” You stand.

Your footsteps crunch against the gravel of the ground. The Shadow is writhing about in place, still oblivious to your approach. Summoning a Persona is out of the question; Shadows can notice the presence of magic. The best way would be to jab it with a solid punch and then retreat before it finishes forming. The question is, do you have enough skill to pull this off?

Your breath is shaky. Your knees tremble. It’s been a while since your came up against a Shadow this close. Anti-Shadow Operatives have guns for this. You don’t. One wrong move could spell the end for you. You’ve heard stories of unlucky cadets who have been assaulted by Shadows. They’ve been consumed and devoured by the monsters, leaving nothing but an empty shell behind. The Shadows in those reports had been some of the more dangerous types and the blob of goo slithering before you can’t really compare. Even so, you don’t want to be preyed upon by them.

If that happened, you’d…

You’d…

You...

...?

......???

The Shadow is beginning to turn around. It as if a thousand volts jolt through your system at once. You rush forward and smash your right fist into the body of the monster. It’s like punching goo, but then your hear a squelching sound as the Shadow is broken apart into its individual real forms. They struggle to pull themselves together, the shock of blow still weighing them down.

>You gained 0.9 C. EXP…?

Four Shadows. Two Basalts—boulders with hands with skull faces protruding outwards, a Hand and a Maya. The Basalts will be tough to take down. The other will be easy. You hear Celeste and Akikazu run up to your position, Personas already summoned.

“Took you long enough, damn it!”

“I’m ready when you are, Takashi-kun!”

The Shadows have regained their balance. Slowly, they swivel to face you. The Hand gives out an eerie wail, not unlike that of a banshee. You are not afraid. You have the advantage. Talking is not an option. So command your team to do the only thing possible here:

“Fight!”

The three Players traverse the first sections of Area 019. They fight Shadows, get injured, snag treasures and push through obstacles. Food is eaten, water is gulped down. Throughout it all, you have the team move silently. You catch several Shadows off guard, allowing Celeste to sear them with her fire and Akikazu to crush them with his strength.

“That’s it! They’re all down!”

“Then what the hell are we standin’ around for? ALL-OUT ATTACK!”

>You gained 2.64 C. EXP…?

Among the ruins of a bombed-out building, the second bonfire is lit. The team sits down and stretches their limbs in the healing embrace of the flame.

“Man, that last group was tough!” Celeste laugh, popping a Chakra Drop into her mouth. “Good thing we managed to take them by surprise.”

“Hey Akikazu, you okay?” You ask. “You’re kinda bleeding from your arm.”

“This?” Akikazu looks at the blood dripping out of his wound. A Drive, humanoid machines with lanches protruding sideways for arms, had scraped him there. You blasted it with Koppa Tengu’s wind and Celeste finished it off with another fireball. “Tch, this is nothin’. I’ve had worse.”

“We still have a lot of Life Stones left, you know.”

“I said I’ll be fine.” Akikazu growls.

The Shadows are growing stronger. They’re hardier and sturdier. Your magic isn’t doing as much damage to them. It’s to be expected; this is the third sector, so the difficulty curve will increase. Akikazu is having the time of life though, crushing and bashing Shadows into flecks of shadowy powder. Celeste is also doing well. Her fast strikes with her rapier have proved deadly against the slow-moving monsters and her fire is nothing to scoff at.

You aren’t terrible, but your teammates appear to have outstripped you in terms of power. That’s okay. You make it up with your versatility and leadership.

Was it a good idea to have spent the last few days studying and not training at all? Well, no use dwelling on it now. There is a girl who needs saving.

…that sounds quite romantic. Fumika Shibuya is anything but.

“Come on, let’s keep going.” You hear yourself say.

Up ahead, a crossroads is presented. The first path goes to the left and Fumika’s distress signal is emitting from there. The second path is the middle one and is empty, but leads up a hill. The third path heads to the right. There are nasty scars on the earth where parts of the roads have been melted away. The nearby electronic sign is out of power and useless.

>>Takashi: Shock the signpost with Zio.

You command Pixie to do that. The signpost crackles with electricity, turning on all of its neon lights at once. Then it blows out, leaving nothing but the scent of burning plastic in the air.

“Fan-fucking-tastic.” Akikazu says, his sarcasm apparent.

“Worth a shot.” You reply. “Fine, let’s just go to the signal.”

“The Wild Card really looks useful, huh…” Celeste mutters as the team walks down the barren path. “If I had the power…I’d equip an ice Persona in winter all the time so I wouldn’t be cold, for starters.”

“What are you talking about?” You ask.

“Haven’t you ever had fantasies a child what you’d do if you had the power of the Wild Card?” Celeste replies with a smile.

“No…” Akikazu says. “Why would I?”

“Come on, you must have had some. I know I did back in primary school.” Celeste says. “At the very least you could equip a fire-resistant Persona and use it to see how hot a frying pan is before cooking.”

“Tachibana, there’s a good fucking reason why Takashi hasn’t ever revealed his powers to the public. Maybe you’ve heard of it.”

“I know, I know. Let’s assume the government won’t immediately track him down and lock him up with research.” Celeste says.

“That would mean Kaede Kurusu wasn’t an absolute psychopath, which is impossible.” You grumble. “Also, all the media attention would kill me.”

“You boys are no fun.” Celeste pouts. “Besides, the Last Word wasn’t that bad. She brought Japan years of good fortune, remember?”

“So the legends say.” Is what you mutter. “It’s hard to take them seriously.”

To be honest, as a child you did wonder what would being a Wild Card would be like. For about a couple of days. You entertained childish thoughts such as earning lots of money or making a harem of beautiful women (this is what you thought being an adult was like at seven years old). Then you saw the way Judgement users were put under surveillance and called upon for mandatory scientific investigation by their own countries. The pressure a Fool would be subject to would be a thousand times worse. Thus, you immediately abandoned the idea.

The left path takes you to a clearing. If this had been the countryside, it would be covered in grass and dotted with trees. Here, it is covered in rocks and dotted with empty storage barrels and burned-out shells of vehicles.

"Hey, look at that!"

There is a figure slumped against a mass of rubble close to the center. A person with long black hair, shaggy clothes and what appears to be a laser pistol in her right hand.

Resting on the ground next to her is a laptop.

You recognize it.

You can hold a pistol with one hand or easily strap it in somewhere. If you fire a pistol with one hand while you have a free second hand you deserve to be slapped until you stop, but if your other hand is preoccupied it is acceptable to one hand a pistol.

A laptop can be carried with one hand and we have six hands between our party.

It's near impossible to stabilize a pistol with one hand, despite what action movies would have you believe. It would be less of an issue with a laser pistol, as it would produce far less than a single Newton of recoil, but you'd still have a steadier aim with both hands on the gun.

According to the map, the distress signal is practically next to you. It must be emitting from the laptop, then. But why is it lying on the ground? You’d think a girl like Fumika would cradle it like a baby and never let go. Had she been attacked and wandered off here to rest, dropping the item in her carelessness and exhaustion?

“Fumika!” You shout. Your voice echoes across the clearing. “Is that you?”

Only silence is there to heed your call.

“No response.” Celeste wonders. “She must be out of it.”

“Or she’s dead.” Akikazu says.

“Or this is an impostor.” You growl. It’s too far away to tell. “Tell you what, I’m going to approach her.”

“Wait! If it’s a trap, why are you going alone?” Celeste protests.

“Don’t want you guys to get caught in the crossfire. Besides, I’ll be fine. I have the Wild Card, remember?”

“At least let me buff you first.” Celeste summons Sati and activates Rakukaja twice. Grey shimmering aura covers you. Your defense is now boosted.

“I was going to ask you to a second later, but thanks.”

You slowly step towards the figure. She, or it, doesn’t move an inch. There is no sign of breathing. Maybe Fumika is a heavy sleeper? Or perhaps she is truly dead. You try and not think about it and keep on walking.

You are now close enough to get a better look at the figure. Long, messy black hair. Ragged, dirty clothes. Closed eyes and a slightly pointed nose. It’s even got those two…lumps extruding from her chest. This figure unmistakably has the form of a human. Skin, eyelashes, limbs and hair are all there.

“Fumika?” You ask again. “Is that you…”

The figure trembles. You wait with bated breath.

“Mmm…”

Fingers twitch. Eyelids slowly open. Her mouth opens.

“…”

Then the figure’s eyelids snap open.

Metallic sockets are revealed. Twin pulsating, blood-red iris glare back. Jaw goes slack, revealing titanium insides.

This is NOT Fumika.

“INTRUDER DETECTED. VERIFYING IDENTITY. PROCEEDING WITH ASSIGNED AMBUSH PROTOCOL.”

In the span of a second, the figure has jumped up and latched onto you. You feel claw-like hands digging into your flesh. Arms constrict around you like a mighty python, squeezing the life from your body. You are suddenly shoved downwards. The thing is now on top, pinning you to the hard rocky earth.

You struggle to escape. The thing’s strength is far beyond any average human. Yeah, this is definitely not Fumika. The more you try, the harder it tightens its grip.

Suddenly, a harsh beeping sound blares from its mouth. Its eyes are flashing. The sensation is almost blinding.

That’s not the worst part.

“ACTIVATING SELF-DETONATION. PREDICTED SUCCESS RATE OF ELIMINATING INTRUDER: 99.9%.”

You do not want to die. You’ve said this multiple times over the course of your journey as a Player and the sentiment hasn’t changed on bit.

You shove every last bit of Ippon-Datara’s strength into your legs and kick the robotic figure off you. Its claws tear off skin and draw blood as it’s ejected away from your body and into the air. It shudders and then detonates. A wall of fire and shrapnel consumes you.

You hear Celeste screaming your name. Powerful hands grab you and drag you away. You look up through the smoke and see Akikazu scowling down at you, eyes furious.

“Next time leader,” He snarls, “Don’t do something that fucking goddamn idiotic, got it?”

“Takashi-kun!” Celeste runs up to you, her hands shaking. “Are you alright? Quick, let me heal you…”

Your body is covered in bits of metal and glass. There are several burns running up and down your legs and thighs. It’s going to be hard to explain to your sister why your clothes now look like they came from a dumpster. Despite it all, you’re mostly okay. It hurts, indeed, but it could have been much worse. Pain means you are alive and that’s what counts, right?

Sati’s Dia stings but it soothes your muscles and seals up your wounds. You switch to Pixie and have her do the same. Your muscles ache and pain shoots up your legs as you gingerly climb to your feet, but you’re now more or less back at full health.

You feed yourself some Life Stones, for good measure. They are crunchy like hard candy. The bad kind of hard candy.

The explosion has scattered the pieces of the figure all over the place. Metal limbs joints lay strewn across the cleaning, like an android manufacturing plant having recently been caught in a typhoon. The head rolls across the ground and comes to a rest at your feet.

“So it was a trap.” You mutter. Ignoring Akikazu’s remark of ‘no, shit!’, you kick at the head. It bounces along the earth like a soccer ball. One of its eyes fall out and cracks. “But where’s the real Fumika, then?”

“Clever bastards.” Akikazu snarls. The laptop has somehow survived the explosion. The case is battered and charred, but the hard drive is working and the screen is flashing as if nothing had happened. He walks over and picks it up.

“Now what?” Celeste asks.

You contemplate this. “We’ve got her laptop now, so maybe there’s something we can use on it—”

Then your phones all ring at once.

“WARNING. AN ENEMY OF GREAT POWER HAS BEEN DETECTED UP AHEAD. PLEASE EXERCISE CAUTION.”

“What enemy?” Celeste exclaims. “We beat the robot!”

“DETONATION FAILED. FAILURE TO ERADICATE INTRUDERS.” The robotic head drones. “NOW PROCEEDING WITH BACKUP PROTOCOL. WARNING, WARNING, WARNING. PREPARING OFFENSIVE PROTOCOLS. Tremors pulse through the ground. Several motors start up in the distance, polluting the air with burning petrol. A ring of pillars rise up from the ground. They surround your team. Then electricity sparks out from within and connects them in a circle. A barrier is formed, rising from ground level to three metres high. You are trapped.

The air in front shimmers and glistens. Sparks travel across a gargantuan, invisible figure. Then whatever stealth technology it’s using breaks down completely, revealing the figure for you to see.

Your eyes widen.

Oh no.

OH NO.

Of all the Shadows you could possibly face, why this one?

A massive, black armored tank stands, its elongated turret pointed directly at your team. There is a yellow mask where the front lid should be. Metal plating covers its entire body. Its treads scrape across the barren wasteland as it advances ever so slowly towards you. You gulp and take a step backwards.

A Turret. One of the more powerful classes of Shadows, they were notorious for their vicious habit of running over unfortunate operatives and grinding their flesh between their caterpillar tracks. They would power across the battlefield, deflecting attacks with their thick armor and blasting down walls with their turret shots. If Shadows were an organized army, Turrets would be their shock troopers.

With numerous magic resistances, overwhelming strength and tremendous speeds, they were a nightmare that no Anti-Shadow Operative desired to face.

Should Laurence be summoned? He will only exist for five minutes and Akikazu won't be able to attack until he finishes summoning.
>>
>>43783017
Don't summon Laurence. Not yet, at least. Save him for if the battle goes poorly.
>>
>>43783017
Yes, summon him
>>
>>43783017
Not yet.
>>
>>43783009
Oh, right, crap. Who do we have equipped?
>>
>>43783017
Is a turret lightning and gun or just gun?

If the former, hold him back. If the latter, bring him in.
>>
>>43783057
It says it in the post. Ippon-Datara, Koppa Tengu, Archangel and Pixie.
>>
>>43783057

>>
>>43783017

Elec Break. Get rid of this thing's resistances.
>>
>>43782988
>>43783009
What do we have equipped? Try each element that our companions can't use, probe for weaknesses, start with the obvious, Zio.
>>43783017
How long does summoning Laurence take? IIRC Akikazu doesn't have elemental spells, so he should probably summon.
>>
>>43783096
Heck, I can agree with this. I figure in the opening stages of the battle we should do some sort of direct support (debuffing or buffing) that DOESN'T result in us getting splattered across the floor, and Elec Break qualifies. So, yeah, I'll second.
>>
>>43783096
>only we can use zio
>costs a shitton of mp
Bad idea
>>
>>43783120
And if it turns out to be immune to fire, meaning Celeste is useless for blasting?
>>
>>43783154
Then she focus on healing and buffing.
>>
>>43783172
Yes, but I mean "then can we Elec Break it, since we'll be pulling primary damage dealing duty"?
>>
>>43783154
we should check to make sure it's resistant to electricity before using elec break
>>
>>43783197
I bet it resists Zio so elec break will make it just deal regular damage. We should explore other options first.
>>
>>43783212
Even if it's not, Elec Break will still help. If the target isn't resistant it gives them an electricity weakness, instead.

>>43783220
Fair enough. I should change that to "if it turns out to be immune or resistant to fire, wind, light and darkness, then let's Elec Break it". Which is a tall list of resistances, but not out of the question for an Arcana Turret. We'll have to see.
>>
If it's the same as P3 then it's weak against ice. You should've picked Jack Frost instead the piece of shit that is Archangel.
>>
>>43783293
Or it could be like Shadow of the Labyrinth and resist Ice. We have no idea what its weakness will be.
>>
>>43783293

>>

Don’t panic. Stay rational. Consider your options carefully. The Turret is heavily armored, so physical attacks might not do well against it. Gun attacks are definitely out of the question. As for elemental resistances you have no damn clue. Shadows don’t follow conventional logic. A beast covered in fire may be weak to it. A machine may absorb electricity. Ice won’t work against a tree. There are all kinds of weird examples and many of these got a lot of the original operatives, all the way back in the 2040s, killed.

Think, Takashi Wakui, think! Remember what Shizuka and her mates said. They often talked about their jobs. Turrets must have come up somewhere. Now then, what were their weaknesses…

“Look out, Takashi-kun!”

Before you can finish your thoughts, the Turret aims its barrel at you and fires. The team scatters. You barely manage to dodge in time. The shell explodes, sending dust flying everywhere.

You cough and sputter as you run out of the cloud. Your vision blurs and tears threaten to spill from your eyes.

You look back. There is a gaping hole at the point of impact. Ignoring how the blast would have torn your body to shreds had it hit, this is a gun attack, no doubt about it.

You hear metal treads scraping across hard earth. There is a rumbling sound approaching, fast. You slowly turn around and see the Turret bearing down on you, ready to crush you beneath its mighty wheels.

There is no time to run. No other choice, then.

“Ippon-Datara!”

Ippon-Datara’s hammer smashes against the front plate of the encroaching Turret. The two forces slow to a stop. You feel Ippon-Datara draining the strength out of you as he struggles to force your enemy backwards. The world is shaking, sparks are flying and you feel as if your knees could buckle at any moment.

You give an agonizing last push. The Arcane Turret is forced backwards by a few metres. It’s not much, but it gives you time to escape. It fires another round. You evade it easily and regroup with your fellow Players on the other side of the arena.

“Agilao!” Celeste hurls a blast of fire towards the Arcane Turret. It hit its side plate and sizzles. Only a few minor burn marks are produced. If fire doesn’t work, how about wind?

You smash Koppa Tengu’s tarot card. He fires a Garu at the Shadow. The harsh, green wind rips at its plating, tearing off metal chunks and knocking it to the side.

“Celeste! Fire doesn’t work!” You shout. “Stick on healing and buffing me and Akikazu!”

Celeste looks downcast at the fact that her fire proved ineffective, but it is swiftly replaced by determination. You feel another Rakukaja powering through your body.

“Kill Rush!” Ubelluris charges and pounds his stony fists onto the Arcana Turret’s exterior. He punches and smashes and bashes until the Shadow cannot withstand it any longer and knocks him back with a solid blow to the chest. Akikazu falls on his back, wincing, as the pain is transmitted from his Persona to him. His attacks have worked—the Arcane Turret is in a noticeably worse condition than before. It's still far from finished, though.

You cast Garu after Garu while Akikazu pounds and smashes it with his hammer and Ubelluris’s fists. As strong as the Turrets are, any opponent outnumbered will find themselves in a pickle. Not to mention, its low maneuverability means it can’t focus one multiple targets at a time.

“Watch out, Celeste!” Ippon-Datara leaps in front of Celeste. A shell hits him, sending him reeling. You spit out blood and your vision briefly goes hazy. Moments later, a soothing jade glow wipes away your wounds and grants you strength. Yeah, the Arcane Turret seems to have noticed that Celeste is the heler of the party and is now constantly aiming for her.

“Thanks, Takashi-kun. Here, Rakukaja!”

You’re around to protect her, so it’s okay. Plus, it gives Akikazu another advantage to bash away at the Shadows’ armor plating.

“Take this, you sonofabitch!”

Make that several powerful strikes.

Slowly but steadily, with every attack, the Arcane Turret is being worn down. Its vitality drops bit by bit. If you keep this up, it won’t be belong before it collapses and disappears for good.

It seems to be aware of this, because a blast of wind is forced outwards, sending you and your fellow Players flying. You taste dirt and struggle to recover.

You feel a massive amount of power gathering inside the Arcane Turret. Almost as if it’s CHARGING up…

No, you do not have time for this shit. You throat is parched, your limbs are sore and your clothes are ruined beyond the point of no return. The last thing you need is to be run over by an oversized masked tank.

The rational part of your brain points out that charging directly at a Turret Shadow is a pretty bad idea. The part of your brain hopped up on adrenaline yells at it to shut its fucking mouth, because you are already on your feet and pounding across the breadth of the arena. You summon Koppa Tengu and fire a blast of wind at the Arcane Turret.

At the same time, Celeste gathers fire in her palms. She arches her arm backward and then gives the mightiest throw of her life. The Agilao spell flies towards the Arcane Turret like a magnificent phoenix soaring through the air.

Right before it strikes the barrel of the turret, your Garu spell collides with it. Wind fuels fire and so…

KABOOM.

The resulting mixture of Agilao and Garu explodes. The Arcane Turret is sent reeling. It skids around the arena in circles before Akikazu gives it a solid whack with his hammer and sending it off to the side.

The turret of the Arcane Turret has been snapped off. It’s crippled for good. Half its offense has been destroyed. You shouldn’t let your guard down. It could still overrun you with its massive treads…

“That. Was. Awesome.” Celeste whispers, awed.

You and Celeste perform Minor Detonation, one of the most basic Fusion Spells. If you knew Garula you’d be able to perform Medium Detonation but oh well, nobody is perfect. Another explosion hits the Arcane Turret. Half its wheels fall off. Its mask is beginning to crack. The ‘head’ is bent downwards, as if wallowing in the shame of its imminent defeat.

“Get over here!” Akikazu roars. Ubelluris lunges forward and unleashes a barrage of punches and stomps onto the Arcane Turrent’s charred body. Then it leaps on top of the Turret and sinks its fingers into the cracks of the mask. It then wrenches the mask upward and crushes it in its palms.

Victory is achieved. The Arcane Turret decomposes into shadowy dust, which is rapidly carried by the wind. Ubelluris begins to pound his chest with his fists. He roars, a low and guttural sound echoing throughout the crater.

“Who does he think he is, King Kong?” You mutter.

What is C. EXP? It is an acronym, standing for COMPETENCE EXPERIENCE. Whenever you fight against a living creature, whether it be Shadow, Denizen or even a human, you will gain C. EXP. Once you have gained sufficient C. EXP equivalent or more than the denominator, you may LEVEL UP.
>When you LEVEL UP, you will grow stronger. Depending on the circumstances, you may learn new abilities, increase your base stats, gain special perks or even a combination of all three.
>Once you LEVEL UP, your C. EXP will drop to 0. This will occur even if your C. EXP is greater than the requirement (i.e numerator > denominator)
>Hoarding C. EXP will increase the power of your LEVEL UP, up to a certain level. You might need to ‘spend’ it in the future, too.

So now that we can grind effectively, I think we should spend Friday afternoons in the Void. Two days of each of our clubs per week, Friday for grinding. Evenings spent either training stats or advancing any Social Links we have at night, like Kozue. Saturdays we use either for hanging out with friends for Social Links or more grinding. Sunday is for studying and evenings for the Strength SL since that's the only time Shizuka is available. Does that sound good, or can anyone think of a more efficient schedule?
