Become The Vampire Quest 6

You look at the shot for a moment, then at Stephen.

“You know what? I'm up for it. I'm trying to keep a low profile, so if I hold back a bit it's only because I don't need a vampire hate mob chasing me around the school.”

Stephen nods slightly.

“I was thinking something similar, actually. But we won't leave you out of the fun. We're mostly just going to be chasing them off. I don't think we'll be hunting to kill tonight, but you never know.”

You nod slightly, down the shot, and give Sammy a smile.

“I promise to come back in one piece.”

Sammy nods and smiles, first at you, then at Stephen. Stephen gives Sammy a wink and clasps you on the shoulder, leading you away.

“You know, I couldn't have planned tonight better myself. Prove yourself at the hunt and I think we'll be having another party soon to celebrate the newest member of our clan.”

He leads you over to a group of young men, teenagers and a few older men who, frankly, are built like two brick shithouses stuck together. Some of them regard you with curiosity, one or two with some level or scorn, and the rest look eager to get out on the hunt, grinning at you and making comments back and forth in hushed tones. Stephen walks past them to a large wooden door.

“Alright lads, into the locker room. Hang up your stuff, get changed and we'll gather by the old oak tree. And Matthew, no streaking. We've got fur when we shift but that's no excuse for indecency, especially when we've got pants that fit our shifted forms.”

The werewolves file into the locker room and Stephen chuckles a bit.

“I'll meet you by the front door in a moment.”

The door closes, and you shrug a little. You head for the front door and spot Marie making a straight line towards you.

The Rules:
Same system as Become The Dragon Quest. If you don't know what that is, it's best of three d20 rolls. I name a stat that sums up what you're trying to do, and if I don't name a relevant skill, you try to fill in the blank based on what you're trying to accomplish. “Break open the door” might be Strength based, but if you've been playing baseball after school and there's a lead pipe nearby, you could apply your Baseball skill to the roll. A 20 on the die is a crit threat, and if either of the other two rolls is 20 or higher after mods, it's a critical. A crit fail is when you have two or more 1s. So far this system has worked out well enough. We'll get into combat rules as needed, but in basic terms you have wounds, not HP, and the worse the wounds, the more penalties you accrue while doing other things.

Most Important Rule:
Have fun.

You head for the front door, but you adjust your path so that Marie can get to you quickly. Whatever she's after, it'll hopefully be over quick.

“Hey, Oliver, how's it going?”

You gesture to the door and smile a bit.

“Oh, just heading out for a bit. Vampire hunting and all that good stuff. You know how it goes.”

Marie laughs a little bit and smiles.

“Fair enough... I just wanted to ask you something before you head out. You didn't kiss Sammy while you were out there, did you?”

You pause, trying to read her expression. You don't think anyone heard her, or if they did they're doing a great job of pretending they didn't. And considering their collective alcohol content right now, that's unlikely.

“I mean, she pecked me on the cheek, but that's about as friendly as we got, and we've both been drinking so I'm blaming that.”

Marie's eyes light up.

“Alright, great!”

She grabs your collar and leans in.

You duck down under the attempted kiss, putting your arms up and sliding free of your shirt, leaving Marie standing there holding it and looking confused. She bunches it up and sighs, glancing at the stairs. You don't see Jennifer up there, but that little look tells you all you needed to know. Sammy didn't kiss you yet, and Jennifer wants to make things hard on you by making sure she's not your first kiss. Maybe Sammy's a romantic about it or something. Either way her attempt drew attention.

“Sorry Marie, but I like to get to know a girl first.”

You smile and grab your shirt back, slipping it on.

“I want my first kiss to have a bit more meaning.”

Marie just stands there awkwardly, and you duck out the front door before the crowd turns on her. You don't need to see that one unfold. Stephen is standing outside the front door in his shifted form, and you pause for a moment to take in the sight. You can tell it's Stephen, kinda, from the facial structure. You've seen a few pictures of werewolves, and some things like a broad face or large nose tend to translate into similar facial features for the wolf. He growls quietly, before laughing in a rough voice.

“Ready then?”

You nod slightly and straighten your shirt out a little.

“So am I riding shotgun or do I just try to keep up?”

Stephen grins a bit.

“Pull your own weight. I'll try to stop from time to time so you can catch up.”

You nod a little and smile.

“Good enough for me.”

Stephen starts running off and you sprint after him. It occurs to you that there's probably going to be a lot of running around in your future, and you're thankful to whatever gods might exist in the world that you've been running all your life. Just like before you use the terrain to your advantage, but Stephen does much the same with his larger gait and long jumps. He's obviously a lot quicker than you are, and most of the other werewolves probably are as well. Still, you manage to make good time, and each time he stops Stephen looks a little surprised by just how close you are to him.

When Stephen finally stops and you catch up, you find yourself at the side of the mountain facing away from the city. It's dark, almost too dark to see anything properly, and you know for a fact there are types of vampires who would be almost invisible in this lighting. Stephen sniffs at the air and glances at you.

“Remember, we aren't here to kill. We don't need an incident. If you kill them, that's on you. We just need to scare them off a bit. Understand?”

You nod slightly, and Stephen howls loudly, answered by a series of howls to your left and right. Stephen crouches low and begins to advance.

“Stay close. Eyes open, ears alert. Whatever tracking skills you have, use them. Show me your talents.”

You nod and look around, grabbing hold of a nearby downed branch and snapping a section of it off as quietly as you can. Stephen starts to walk off, and you take a few moments to prepare the stake properly. You don't have a decent knife on you, but you find a flat stone and manage to wear the broken part of the branch into a crude point, and you turn to follow the path Stephen had been taking as you work on your weapon.

You can see Stephen further ahead, and you hustle along to catch up with him, thankful that you didn't lose sight of him. As you get closer you notice a flicker of movement up above you, a vaguely humanoid shape in the trees, and you slip into the shadows for a moment, watching carefully. You grab a fistful of dirt and start to spread it along your neck and face. It was in your dad's notes, something about throwing a vampire off with a bad taste they don't expect. Garlic sauce was his preferred tactic, but motor oil and dirt also worked well. Just something to get them to think twice.

The figure seems to be watching Stephen carefully as he walks around, moving from tree to tree silently, and you tail it from a distance. You can't call out to Stephen without alerting his pursuer, but if you don't then he might be in danger. You grip your makeshift stake tightly in one hand. You could climb up there and try to get closer among the trees, or wait for the stalker to make a move and rush in to save the day.

You dart from shadow to shadow until you reach a suitable tree for climbing. You're not an expert or anything, but some of the trees just look far more suitable for your purposes than others. You pick one not too far away from your target, clutch the stake between your teeth, and climb. It's slow going at first, and you're thankful that Stephen is advancing slowly and his pursuer isn't particularly high up. Once you make it to the same height it gets much easier, and you move silently towards the person in the trees.

"What a stupid mutt..."

A male voice. As you get closer you can finally make out their features. Pale, obviously, and dressed in all black. He looks a little bit goth, honestly. Not Gothic, goth. He even has a hoodie with some kind of ironic slogan on it that you can't quite make out. You can see his fangs pretty clearly, too. You don't think he even knows you exist, the poor undead bastard.

"Well, hunger waits for no man..."

He shifts slightly, getting ready to jump.

You move up close and smile.

"Guess what? You've just won a free year long vacation!"

The vampire turns, looking surprised and confused.

"What the fu-?"

You kick hard at his leg as he turns.

"Have a nice trip!"

As he starts to stumble you aim for the other leg and send him tumbling towards the ground.

"See you next fall!"

You mentally cross that off your list of lame vampire hunting jokes to use. It's pretty seasonal, and you doubt it'll come up again, so it was the best use of the opportunity. As the vampire falls, Stephen turns towards the commotion, and the vampire lands directly in front of him. You wave a bit.

"He was going to try to eat you. I thought you might like a say in it."

Stephen looks at the vampire, who struggles to his feet. Stephen leans in slowly.

"You have three seconds. Make them count. I prefer hunting quick things, more of a challenge."

The vampire looks up at you, then at Stephen, and bolts away at top speed. Stephen chuckles and howls.

"Head on back, I'm gonna show those pups how you hunt a rookie vampire."

He runs off, barking and howling, and you climb down from your perch. It had been sheer luck that you pulled that off, and if you hadn't hung back you'd never have seen him. You head back to the house victorious and slow to a halt when you hear women yelling. One of them sounds like Jennifer, and you suspect they're having a discussion away from the party in case someone shifts. You should probably avoid it, but...

You decide to skirt around the group, keeping your distance. You do hear your name thrown about, but you aren't close enough to get any sort of context. You go to the front door and walk inside. Most of the girls seem to have vanished, and they're likely off playing politics like Sammy said they would. Speaking of Sammy, you don't spot her. She might be off with the group. The only girl who stayed behind who you recognize is Marie, and she doesn't seem like she can bring herself to look your way.

You walk over to one of the guys by the snack table and grab a drink.

"So, what's going on? I know I missed a few things, but..."

He shrugs and points to the stairs.

"Sammy ran off to her room, and Marigold nearly got torn apart until she admitted that Jennifer twisted her arm and made her try to kiss you. Now all the ladies are outside for the most part, figuring out what to do next and it Jennifer really had the best intentions in mind. Between you and me, I think Jennifer is trying to use you to hurt Sammy. No idea why, but I get the feeling she's ashamed of the runt to the point where she's lashing out for no good reason. You're the first guy to show her any interest at all, and that's gotta be driving Jennifer nuts."

You sip your drink slowly and nod a little.

"I kinda wanna head up there and comfort her."

The man nods a little.

"So long as you don't do anything dumb you should be fine. Well, so long as Patrick doesn't come back early. But even then, you know better than to try something where he can smell it, right?"

You nod and take another sip.

"Oh, and I scared the vampire out of hiding. Stephen is chasing him around for fun with the others."

The man laughs a bit.

"I knew you were a cool guy. Well done. Already delivering on that challenge Jennifer gave you."

You nod slightly and weigh your options. You could go upstairs and check on Sammy, or hang around until she calms down. You could head outside again too, and try to find out more about what's being discussed, or maybe just find Stephen and ask for advice.

You finish your drink and dispose of the bottle before turning to the werewolf.

"I'm not gonna do anything dumb, but I'm gonna go make sure Sammy is alright."

He nods a bit and cracks into another beer.

"If you hear any howling you should probably come downstairs. Just a tip."

You shrug slightly and head for the stairs.

"I'll take your word for it."

The werewolf chuckles as you walk off, and you head upstairs. No one stops you along the way, probably because all the people who might take issue with it are outside right now. Once you reach the landing you're faced with a slight problem. You don't actually know where her room is. You could wander blindly and hope for the best, but that's just as likely to end with you in Jennifer's room or something.

There are two hallways leading from the landing. One looks like it leads to the stairs to the third floor, with a few doors along the way, and the other seems to be the main corridor for the second floor. You kinda wish you had snuck around earlier, then you might have a clue what's where.

You consider roaming around and exploring the house until you find Sammy, but that might take ages and you might get in trouble. You let go of your urge to sneak around. Maybe when you find a vampire estate you can really get your sneak on... You pull out your cell phone and text Sammy, hoping for a quick reply.

"Where are you? Are you alright?"

You wait a moment and listen carefully for the sound of her cell phone going off. Nothing. Well, that narrows things down a bit, she's not in one of the closer rooms. That leaves the second and third floors. Your phone buzzes and you check the reply.

"I'll be alright. Go have fun. I'll be down later."

You sigh softly. Well, she did say she'd be alright, and you want to respect her right to time to herself, but you're also worried about her.

You pocket your phone. You know what this calls for, and now you just need to track her down. When you were little and got upset you used to watch TV and sulk. Then when your dad got home he used to sneak in and surprise you with a hug. As you got older it got a little awkward, especially when you started resenting him, but it always made you feel a little better about whatever had been getting you down.

You decide to check the second floor first, mainly because Jennifer seems like the type to want a huge penthouse bedroom or something. Whatever the proper term for that is, she probably has it. You wander around the second floor for a bit. It's pretty big in and of itself, but it only takes you a few minutes before you find what you're looking for.

The trio of doors stands out mostly because of the signs on them. One of them reads "Lucas", so that's probably her older brother's room. Next to that one is "Bridgette", and it has little flower stickers around it. And at the far end of the hall, about as far away from the stairs as you can get, is Sammy's room. The sign reads "Samantha", and there's a single gold star underneath it, along with words carved into the wood. "I believe in you -Dad".

You move to open the door and sneak in when you hear a soft sound. You would have almost mistaken it for a whimper or something, but something about it sounded odd. You listen a little more closely and hear it again, along with Sammy's voice as she stammers your name quietly. It dawns on you what she's doing in there, and you can feel heat rising in your cheeks. Well, at least she's comforting herself.

>>43770970
Consider her life. Other werewolves don't want her because she's a runt, and at school Vanessa probably kept boys away from her to keep her slave free from social obligations. Then suddenly her knight in shining armor saves her, and at a party close to the full moon goes out of his way to make her feel like she has hope. He even dodges the affections of another werewolf, which makes her kinda happy despite the circumstances.

Can you really blame her?

You back away from the door slowly. Well, if nothing else that confirms how she feels about you. You briefly picture the scene beyond the door, Sammy curled up on her bed, bare in the privacy of her room with the moonlight on her skin. You file that one away for later, when you have some privacy of your own, and start making your way back to the stairs.

As you near the stairs you can hear footsteps up above, and you freeze. It suddenly occurs to you that you haven't seen Patrick, Sammy's dad, despite Blake saying he'd be leading the festivities. You duck into an open doorway and watch as a man slightly older and more muscular than Stephen rushes by, muttering under his breath and pulling on a shirt.

"Shit shit shit..."

He stops at the landing and laughs heartily.

"Sorry I'm late, I hope you saved me some beer! My wife wore me out!"

There's a cheer and some laughter, and he leaps over the railing and down to the ground floor. At least you weren't spotted coming from Sammy's room, especially with her scent in the air. Probably. You can't actually smell it yourself, but you assume they could for your own safety. Now, how to get downstairs...

You head downstairs like nothing is wrong. Because nothing is. You make a line right for the snack table and no one pays you much mind as you help yourself to some chips. It's only when a hand comes to rest on your shoulder that you start to feel concerned. You turn around and come face to face with Patrick.

"Well now. What have we here? Care to tell me what a human is doing in my home?"

His eyes are narrowed and his mouth is a grimace, and while his tone is even he looks ready to bite your face off. Yours words fail you, and you find yourself staring back at him, unable to speak. This is the leader of this pack, the man they all fear and respect, and now you know why. The silence is broken by a young man patting him on the shoulder and grinning.

"This is the one who saved Sammy! His name is Oliver, and he helped Stephen chase away that vampire who kept poking around the mountain."

The change is sudden and dramatic. The scowl vanishes, replaces by a cheerful expression, and he immediately pulls you into a tight hug.

"Ha! Is that so? Welcome to my home then!"

He shakes you from side to side before setting you down, laughing heartily.

"Thank you for saving my little girl. I mean, I know she's almost a grown woman, but still. You have protected someone precious to me. Name your reward, my generosity knows no bounds."

This is the exact opposite of the choice Jennifer gave you. This is no test, just a man trying to repay the person who saved his daughter.

You already know what you want to say, but you let his question hang in the air for a moment and smile.

"I've already asked for a reward from your wife. I want to be part of your clan and she has offered me a chance to prove my worth as thanks. If you want to give a gift to anyone, give one to Sammy as a homecoming present. I don't want anything else besides that."

Patrick blinks, before his eyes go wide and he slaps himself.

"Of course! Sammy's home! I've been running around all day preparing and then passed out!"

He runs off towards the stairs, stopping at the bottom and looking at you.

"In my book, if you save one of ours and act with that kind of respect, you're already one of us. But happy wife, happy life, right?"

He turns back toward the stairs. You don't really think you can stop him, and it's going to be horribly awkward once he gets up there if Sammy hasn't finished. Still, you could try, or at least text Sammy.

You can't really slow him down, but you pull out your phone as he heads upstairs, typing as quickly as you can. Each message gets more and more urgent, letting her know her dad is home, on his way to her, and asking her if she's alright. You keep your references to what she's been doing subtle enough that she won't catch on in her panic, and you pocket your phone when there's nothing else you can do.

Now you just have to wait, and hope.

There's no screaming coming from upstairs, although you can kinda hear her dad's voice. He's probably asking her to let him in or something. Awkward. You could head up and try to help sort things out discretely, or just wait around downsta-

You can hear howling outside, and the people in the room join in, some laughing a little and a few cheering. Someone shouts something about a successful hunt, and another hoists you up, parading you around as an expert vampire hunter. There goes that plan. The door to the locker room swings open and Stephen emerges along with the others, clad in a spare change of clothes and smiling broadly.

"Tonight we rid ourselves of a vampire! He won't be troubling us any more!"

There's a loud cheer, and Stephen chuckles quietly.

"And the ladies are nowhere to be seen for the most part, so let's get all the dangerous drinking games out of the way before I get chewed out, alright?"

Another loud cheer erupts from the crowd.

"I'm in. Name the game."

Stephen smirks a little bit.

"We'll play a round of Fizz Buzz before we send you back to your dorm. It's getting pretty late, and you've got class tomorrow, right?"

Stephen explains the rules to you. It's a counting game, with each person in the circle counting off the next number in the sequence. Every multiple of three someone says Fizz instead of the number, and every multiple of five is Buzz. If it's both you say Fizz Buzz. Whoever screws up, drinks. With each round the person who screwed up adds or subtracts from one of the numbers you're multiplying by, and as people get more and more drunk it gets harder and harder to keep track of what numbers you're on, and what you should be counting by. Stephen hands you a shot.

"Try not to lose on your one round, alright?"

You manage to stay in through the whole first round, until someone messes up on 74 and says Buzz a number too soon. He downs his shot and Stephen smiles at you. You look at your own shot, shrug, and down it. It's much harder stuff than you had been drinking, and Stephen laughs a bit at your reaction to the bitter taste.

"I'll go grab Blake to drive you home. Can you go see if Sammy is staying here tonight or not?"

He walks off before you have much of a chance to reply, leaving you to figure out what to do next on your own. Texting would work, assuming she's not in the shower or having a heart-to-heart with her dad. Barging in would probably be a bad plan though. Maybe you could just go up there and take a look first.

We aren't going to piss on her.

You head upstairs and immediately start sneaking around on your way to Sammy's room. You'd much rather know what's going on before you get there to avoid any awkwardness. As you peer around the corner you spot Patrick sitting outside his daughter's room looking dejected, almost like a scolded puppy. You can hear her shower running, too. She probably told him to wait out there and left him feeling like she was shutting him out or something.

You lean against the wall and consider your next move. This is a good chance to talk to Patrick and get to know him, but you don't know if Stephen is waiting on you to find out what's happening with Sammy. You could also just tell him she's going back tomorrow morning or something, get her some more time with her dad. Heck, you could even just text her and hope for the best.

You give Patrick one last glance. He sighs heavily, hanging his head. Maybe he didn't smell what was going on in there because he wasn't shifted at all or something. Either that or he's the sort of dad who would just make light of it and treat as perfectly normal or use the opportunity to talk to her about the birds and the bees. The puppy dog eyes and the fact that he called her his little girl puts that theory in doubt though, so it's probably the shifting thing.

Well Sammy wrecked us up really bad.
On the other hand Mark may as well have been standing still while we just sort of ghost'd around his puppy punches.
Maybe we're just easily distracted by cute.
Or maybe it's Sammy specific.
Why bother getting hit when we can just be a ghost barring extenuating circumstances?
>>
>>43772628
Maybe we just dodge better when drunk?
Oh man, we should try taking up some kind of drunken fighting style.

Well it would be nice to know if Oliver runs on babby-tier toughness or not.

I mean, getting your arm torn off and not going into shock is great and it would be nice to know that we don't get KO'd after one real hit.

QM said we were running on basically nonalcoholic until that last shot though.

Well, zui quan doesn't mean you ACTUALLY need to be drunk to use it, but if just putting ourselves in the mindset is what it takes then hell, why not? We'll become some badass drunken fighting necromancer vampire.... Sounds like an Exalted pc.
>>
>>43772777
But we'd need to come up with tons of death and undeath themed moves.

Shit like "Hangman tightens the noose" or something.

Otherwise we're not making Jackie Chan proud.
>>
>>43772826
I'd say its worth it. And at that point, it's just irritating the opponent into just swinging like an idiot so we can punch them with silver knuckle dusters or stake them or whatever. Or pouring holy water into a flask, pretending to drink it, and them spitting it all over whatever hellish nightmare thinks it's caught us off guard.

You walk over to Patrick and smile a little bit.

"Hi there. Everything alright?"

Patrick doesn't even look at you, gazing at the closed door.

"Fine, fine... My daughter has never once refused to let me in, and then she goes away for school and suddenly she's started locking her door. I haven't seen much of her since her accident, and... Oh, nevermind..."

You walk closer and stand near his side.

"She might just be growing up. I mean, she's been through a lot today. Maybe she just wants you to see her at her best or something. You obviously care about her, and Sammy wouldn't shut you out without a good reason."

Patrick nods slightly.

"I know that, but... when you're a parent, you worry about this sort of thing. Sammy was always... different. I tried to protect her, keep her safe, but her mother... I just don't want her to think badly of me..."

You pause for a moment and rest a hand on his shoulder. You don't know if you should or not, but you want to reassure him. He doesn't immediately tear your hand off, which is a positive sign.

"She doesn't. And she won't. You're a good man, and a good father. She wouldn't have been so excited to see you again if you weren't."

Patrick turns toward you.

"She... she was?"

You nod a bit and smile.

"She was more excited about coming home to see her dad than she was about being free. Your daughter loves you. Have a little faith in her."

Patrick looks down and laughs, wiping his eyes.

"That sounds like my Sammy... ah... But you didn't come up here to say all that. Did you need Sammy for something?"

You shake your head.

"Not need per se. I'm getting ready to head out and I wanted to check on her. If she's staying here tonight then I wanted to say goodbye first. It's more her party than mine anyway, even if I'm a guest."

Are we sure the plan isn't rezzing mom and pop then nagging them, our roommate and Sammy into staking and rezzing us then retiring from vampire related business?
We could go to school, sell stuff at the market and spend our free time hanging out with our fuzzy bros.
All while only occasionally wrecking the undead.
>>
Patrick rises to his feet and smiles.

"There will be other nights and other parties. She has to worry about her schoolwork. I'll have some faith in your words, Oliver. I think you know better than to lie to someone who can smell the deceit on you."

He starts to laugh, but he's cut short by Sammy opening the door. Instead of her fancy dress she's wearing a tank top and shorts, the sort you'd sleep in rather than run in. They compliment her figure pretty well, though that's probably because they shrunk in the wash or something. Either that or Sammy had a growth spurt in certain areas.

"Hi dad, sorry abou- O-Oliver!"

She blushes and fidgets.

"What are you doing here...?"

Patrick pulls Sammy into a tight hug.

"He's come to take you back to school. Study hard, alright? I love you so much... Come back for the full moon party tomorrow, alright? You can bring Oliver if he can put up with us two nights in a row."

Sammy hugs back awkwardly, glancing at you before squeezing her dad tightly.

"I... I will, dad... I love you too. Lots and lots."

Patrick releases her with a smile.

"Lots and lots."

He turns to you.

"Run along then. And take care of Sammy for me, alright?"

You don't know if that's his approval of you or not, but it feels good that he trusts you.

In order
Upgrading from locking arms to holding hands. I think we're in the clear for that.
.... Wait, is she a righty or a lefty, because if she was up to some "personal time", then that makes this hand holding lewd... and better.
>>
>>43772880
>Bid Patrick goodnight
No reason to make her flip out in front of her dad or vice versa.
Then we go find Blake, maybe handholding would be appropriate right about then. Or a bit later.

You give Patrick a nod.

"You have my word. Have a lovely evening, and I'll see you around."

Patrick laughs a little bit and nods.

"I look forward to it. Until next time."

You gently wrap your hand around Sammy's and smile at her.

"Shall we?"

Sammy turns bright red as you take hold of her hand, but she nods a little bit.

"Mhmm..."

You start to walk away with Sammy, glancing over your shoulder at Patrick. He looks a bit surprised, but there's a smile on his face. You give him a thumbs up, and he returns the gesture. Sammy seems too preoccupied with the fact that you're holding her hand to notice. You lead her to the landing and downstairs, and you feel like someone is glaring daggers at you. You look at the crowd and spot Jennifer. Her expression is impassive, but from her stare you can tell she isn't happy about you holding Sammy's hand.

Crap.

>Pretend you don't see her, get to the car
