Become The Vampire Quest 5

You get into the passenger seat of Blake's car and get comfortable. Heated seats, nice. You idly wonder how much he spends maintaining this thing, and as he gets into the driver's seat you give the sound system a once over. The console looks like something out of a science fiction film, all chrome and covered in buttons. Blake smirks at you and turns the engine on, closing his door right as the music starts to play.

Ow.

You cover your ears and see Blake laughing out of the corner of your eye. He adjusts a dial, and the heavy metal that had savaged your ears drops to a reasonable volume. It's not that you don't like metal, and the bass is still throbbing, but Blake's eardrums are apparently made of steel or something. You glance back at Sammy and spot her covering her own ears and whimpering. Blake puts the car in drive and the engine roars to life as he speeds away from the school.

"So Oliver, tell me about the man who saved my cousin. What do you do?"

You consider the question for a moment before smirking.

"Petty theft, free running and I recently took up staking vampires."

Blake laughs.

"You're hilarious, man. A guy like you, jumping off a roof and picking a pocket? Now I've heard everything."

He shifts into a higher gear and you find yourself almost glued to your seat. He's barely adjusting the wheel at all, but you can tell you're taking the turns pretty sharply. There's definitely magic involved, you just hope there's enough of it to compensate for his reckless and casual driving.

The Rules:
Same system as Become The Dragon Quest. If you don't know what that is, it's best of three d20 rolls. I name a stat that sums up what you're trying to do, and if I don't name a relevant skill, you try to fill in the blank based on what you're trying to accomplish. “Break open the door” might be Strength based, but if you've been playing baseball after school and there's a lead pipe nearby, you could apply your Baseball skill to the roll. A 20 on the die is a crit threat, and if either of the other two rolls is 20 or higher after mods, it's a critical. A crit fail is when you have two or more 1s. So far this system has worked out well enough. We'll get into combat rules as needed, but in basic terms you have wounds, not HP, and the worse the wounds, the more penalties you accrue while doing other things.

Most Important Rule:
Have fun.

“If I'm being honest, mostly it was just for self-defense and so I could get by. I didn't rob banks or anything, just what I needed to survive. And I think a lot of it was just luck, you know?”

Blake nods and chuckles, before glancing at you.

“Wait, you're serious? Huh.”

He grins.

“Interesting... So you're, what, an honorable thief or something?”

You shrug slightly, or at least, to the best of your ability with your shoulders stuck to the seat.

“Maybe. I don't exactly go around proclaiming that I'm Robin Hood, I just tend not to take stuff unless I need it. I used to be pretty poor, so I'd take an apple or something when I was hungry, that kind of thing.”

Blake reaches over and pats you on the shoulder.

“We've all done what we had to do in order to survive, right? That's a pretty werewolf thing to do. I think you're gonna fit right in.”

You nod slightly and smile to yourself. Well, that was promising at the very least. You do your best to adjust your posture so your back won't ache when you stop.

“Speaking of which, I've only met you and Sammy so far. Anything special I need to know to avoid confrontation? I don't want to get in trouble with anyone.”

Blake swerves a little harder than expected at the next turn, and he seems like he's heading to the main road out of town, heading for the mountains to the east. It's not along drive, especially not at this speed, though you'd hate to have to walk that distance.

“Sammy is the daughter of our pack leader, Patrick, and his wife, Jennifer. Patrick is going to be busy leading the festivities, so Jennifer is in charge tonight. Don't cross her. She's nothing like Sammy.”
>>
He looks over his shoulder at Sammy, who still has her ears covered. She doesn't look like she's enjoying the ride at all. Maybe you should have sat back there with her after all. You ease your phone out of your pocket to see if you can text her discretely or something.

“Don't tell anyone I said this, but Aunt Jennifer is an ice cold bitch. I don't blame her, considering her daughter is a runt, she's got her pride to defend and all that, but if you cross her she'll whine to Patrick until he caves to whatever demands she's got. Aside from that, just have fun and relax. Oh, and don't turn down a drink. If you get stupid drunk we won't give you more, but werewolves like to see what people are like when they're trashed. True colors, right? Plus it shows you trust us to keep an eye out for you.”

You glance down at your phone briefly and send Sammy a quick text message. Blake seems oblivious to the act, though you can't be totally sure.

"Doing alright? Need anything?"

You keep your phone handy but out of sight, setting it to vibrate and waiting.

"So I just have to avoid annoying the alphas and trust you guys to take care of my liver? I think I can handle that."

Blake shakes his head.

"Don't call them that. Other clans might use those titles, but then you've also got betas and omegas and stuff. For us, it's the pack leaders, and then everyone else. Titles imply rank and stuff, and that's not how we work."

Your phone buzzes gently in your hand, but you don't miss a beat.

"Alight, gotcha. Sorry about that. Pack leaders... So they make all the big decisions then."

Blake nod, and you glance at your phone as he speaks, listening while you navigate to Sammy's message.

"Yep. They aren't dictators, well, usually anyway, but if they piss people off then it's pretty easy to replace them. So Sammy is kind of like a princess, so long as Patrick and Jennifer hold on to power."

Sammy's message is short and to the point.

"I don't like cars and this is why."

You reply with a quick text to Sammy, leaving Blake hanging for a couple of seconds as though you're letting his words sink in properly.

“On the way back I'll ride with you. Promise.”

You slip your phone back into your pocket for the time being and look out the window, then back to Blake.

“Any other pack members I need to know about? Sorry if I'm asking a lot, this is all just new to me, and I want to make a good first impression.”

Blake shrugs a little bit as he hits the main road. You thought you were going pretty quick before, but now he's kicking the car into high gear, and the whine of the engine mixed with the heavy metal is starting to get almost deafening.

“Eh, I think that's about it, really. Sammy's older brother won't be here tonight, and her kid sister is too young for this kind of party, y'know? Everyone else can introduce themselves.”

You nod slowly and double check that Sammy won't be able to hear what you ask next.

“You keep calling Sammy a runt... why is that?”

Blake looks at you for a few moments as though it should be obvious, before rolling his eyes.

“Right, vampire slayer... Well, werewolves have this thing. The curse, right? Some people have it worse than others, they can't control it, and those that can pass it on through their bloodline. And then sometimes you get runts, like Sammy. She can't transform fully in either direction. Personally I think it's adorable, but it's a sign of weak blood for most people. Sammy's stronger than most humans will ever be, but she's weaker than every other werewolf. That's why she wears her hair the way she does, so she can hide her ears. The human ones? Just nifty magic hair clips.”

You nod slowly. It did explain a few things. She's the track captain, but she doesn't look overly muscular or anything. Though now you have to wonder about the ear thing. If you had bitten her on her real ears, you doubt you would have survived.

“Well, that explains a lot... Just as a heads up, I left all my gear at home. I feel like I'm walking into something crazy without any kind of protection, so I guess I'm already trusting you guys with my life. I think that, so long as you're being up front with me, I'll be alright.”

You slip your phone out of your pocket and send Sammy a preemptive text letting her know you're sorry in advance for any screw ups on your part, discretely pocketing it once more. You look up at the mountains and realize they're a lot closer now than you thought they'd be. In fact, you're pretty much already there. As you draw nearer to the path up the mountains Blake veers to the right, driving off the road and onto a dirt path that you're pretty sure only the slowest of drivers would have ever noticed. He doesn't respond to your comment, focusing completely on his driving.

The path cuts left and right, and then turns back towards the mountain. The main road winds back and forth up the side of the mountain and stops short of the peak, but this path seems to be a straight line to the top. Blake guns the engine and grins.

“Next stop, Chateau de Wolfe!”

He laughs as the world becomes a blur around the car, and you grip the seat tightly. This must be how astronauts feel, you conclude, pinned to their seats by the force of extreme acceleration. You feel yourself growing dizzy, the world spinning slightly, and then all of a sudden it stops. You're parked, and Blake is turning off the engine. You detach yourself from the seat slowly and carefully as your blood redistributes once more, and as you climb out of the car your balance follows suit. You only have to lean against the car for a few moments before you can walk on your own.
>>
The house is fairly classy. It's not the ancient or antique look you expect from vampire dwellings, but a modern and sophisticated home. You muse on whether or not all the fancy glass is bulletproof to prevent being shattered by drunken werewolves, but maybe that's why everything is so fancy. New construction on a regular basis, may as well update things, right?

You look over at Sammy as she smooths out her dress. She smiles sheepishly, looking relieved to be out of the car, and she looks at the house for a moment before sighing. From the way she had acted this will be her first time home in a while. Maybe you can duck out of the limelight by steering attention towards that fact. Blake starts heading towards the house.

“Come on, let's get this party started!”

Sammy nods slightly and looks at you for a moment.

“Shall we?”

I'm imagining that scene from How To Train Your Dragon when Hiccup is scratching Toothless and then hits just the right spot and Toothless collapses to the ground twitching and giddy. Then he does it to a dragon that's trying to attack him and gets exactly the same reaction.

You smile at Sammy and offer her your arm.

“We shall.”

She looks at you for a moment and blushes, before linking arms with you and resting her free hand on your upper arm. She gives you a slight nod, and you walk her up to the front door. Your shorter stride forces Sammy to slow down a bit, and the effect is pretty graceful if you're being honest with yourself. She almost looks like she's floating along at your side. Blake knocks at the door, looking over at you and Sammy as you step beside him. His eyes widen slightly.

“Uh, guys? Might wanna separate before-”

The door swings open suddenly and a jovial man appears, grinning from ear to ear. You recognize him instantly as the man you bumped into at the Bizzare. His eyes seem to pass over you and Sammy and he looks at Blake, laughing heartily.

“Glad you've arrived, my boy!”

He pulls Blake in for a hug before tussling his hear and laughing, putting him in a headlock before Blake slips free with a laugh of his own.

“Yeah, yeah! I'm gonna go find the liquor and catch up, you've been dipping in already, haven't you, old man!”

Blake dashes off, leaving you to deal with the situation. The man turns his attention back towards you and Sammy. His eyebrows creep up slightly, but his smile doesn't fade in the slightest. Sammy's blush deepens, but she makes no move to pull away from you.

You stand your ground and bow slightly.

“Good to see you again. I didn't expect to bump into you hear.”

The man chuckles softly, before laughing heartily and clapping his hands together.

“Splendidly done! Heh. Bump into... So, I take it you're the guest of honor then? Sammy mentioned she might be bringing someone, but she wasn't clear on why.”

He turns to Sammy.

“Mark is here. I think perhaps we'd better get that over with, hmm?”

Sammy stiffens and releases your arm slowly.

“He... He's here?”

The man nods slightly.

“Your mother decided to inform his clan that you'd be making an appearance tonight. He's been putting people on edge all afternoon. Why don't you run along and see to that while I make sure your friend here finds his way around safely.”

Sammy nods slightly and gives you a slightly pained look before walking away. The man gently grabs you by the shoulder.

“I don't know what you did, or why. I don't know how long you've known her or what your intentions are. So let's get some drinks, sit down, and you can tell me your story. If it's a good one, I'll help you out.”

From his tone it's clearly not optional, so you nod a bit and let him lead you inside.

“I just want to say one thing to start off, before we get to drinking. I'm Oliver, and it's a pleasure to meet you.”

The man pats you on the back as he leads you out of the front room and towards what looks like some sort of grand hall. There are people everywhere, talking and drinking. Most of them are blonde or red-haired, except for one man who seems to be standing slightly apart from everyone else. His black hair and frown put him in stark contrast with everyone else in the room. When he spots Sammy his frown turns into a smile that sends a chill down your spine. It's predatory, and in a room full of werewolves, that's saying a lot.
>>
“I am Stephen, brother and right-hand-man of Patrick, our pack leader.”

He waves to a few people as you pass through the crowd towards the snack table, and he grabs two bottles of beer, uncapping them and pushing them into your hands before grabbing a pair for himself and directing you towards the patio. The people who aren't keeping an eye on the dark-haired man, probably that Mark person Stephen was talking about, are staring at you, some muttering to one another and a few making snide comments about humans. Stephen shoots a glare at them as you step out onto the patio.

“This boy is a guest of Samantha. Clearly he has proven himself in her eyes in some way, and you will treat him with respect. Honestly, look at yourselves...”

The mood in the room goes south for a few moments before Stephen laughs and slaps the table.

“I'm only joking, you uptight fuckwits! Ease up on the boy though, alright?”

There's a loud cheer, and Stephen shuts the door as he steps onto the patio.

“Ah... It's going to be a great night...”

You sit down and take a sip of the beer. You've never been fond of the stuff before, but maybe that's because your dad only ever bought the cheap stuff and you were too young to appreciate it properly. You set down one bottle and take a longer pull from the one you started as Stephen sits down across from you.

“I suppose I'll start at the beginning and work from there... When I first came to school today I...”

-

“...And then I kinda messed up with werewolf etiquette and Sammy pretty much decked me.”

You look at the bottle in your hand. You don't recall exactly when you finished the second beer, but it's good stuff either way. Stephen regards you for a few moments before grinning.

“So you're telling me that you're the reason Sammy could come home at all then?”

You nod slightly and set the empty bottle down.

“I guess you could say that, yeah.”

Stephen nods slowly.

“I have a favor to ask of you then. We have a little... family matter to take care of. Mark Collins is from another werewolf clan. Traditionally we don't mix blood between clans, but as part of negotiations his clan demanded a bride for their youngest son. Patrick was furious with them, but Jennifer offered up Sammy without a second thought to ensure things would remain peaceful.”
>>
Stephen smiles and leans back, downing the last of his beer and grinning.

“My brother is a good man, but his wife pulls the strings around here. I love Sammy as if she were my own daughter, and if I had my way I'd tell those Collins wolves to shove off, but my brother is the pack leader. My hands are tied. But now a human has wandered into our den, one who saved Sammy's life. By our laws you have a claim on her now, if you decide to act on it. Then you just need to figure out how to convince Jennifer that giving Sammy to you is the better option. Not that you'd need to marry her or anything, it can just be for show. What do you say?”

It says a lot when the closest thing the poor girl has gotten to a break in seemingly her entire life is a monster hunter.
>>
>>43759354
Kinda, yeah
>>
>>43759354
Aw, I hadn't thought about that... all the more reason to be her friend who can also give killer massages.
>>
You look at your hands for a moment, considering your options. On the one hand you want to help Sammy out again. She obviously didn't want to leave your side at the front door, and she deserves better than to be someone's bargaining chip, especially when that means getting hitched to a guy as unnerving as Mark. It would be the right thing to do, if you can figure out how to pull this con off. You've never stolen a girl before, it could be kinda fun.

On the other hand you don't want to cause a scene, and if you can't win Jennifer over then you're screwed. Plus if she really does run the show around here then being in poor standing with her means this whole trip was for nothing. You need to tread exceptionally lightly with this one, and pissing off Mark might mean turning his clan on you. Vampires you know how to deal with, mostly. Werewolves? Not so much, especially not two whole clans of them.

“I need to think about this, and I need to talk to Sammy. I'm not gonna make a big deal about my claim on her if it's going to upset her. I'm here to make friends, not lose them. I could use her input anyway.”

Stephen stands up and stretches.

“Well, dinner will be soon. And with her brother away tonight, there's going to be a seat beside hers open.”

You nod a little and stand as Stephen opens the door to the house.

“Have fun, try not to get in any trouble, and if anyone causes a fuss just tell them you're a guest and don't know our culture well yet. Oh, and when the howling starts feel free to join in.”

You head for the edge of the patio.

“I'll try to remember that. I'm gonna think a little while and then head inside.”

Stephen nods and leaves you be, and you sit down to look out at the city. It's beautiful like this, a sea of lights. The different regions of the city form a series of concentric circles, and at the very center is the school. Perhaps the different districts are run by different monsters or something, or different families. The Wolfe's live up on the mountain, so maybe they aren't as involved in inter-monster relations? You'll have to delve into that at some point and work it out.

You pull out your phone and open it up. There are a few messages from a number you don't recognize, and one from Sammy. You must have accidentally set it to mute or something, or just not noticed it buzzing while you were telling your story. You open the one from Sammy first.

“Thanks. I'd like that.”

It brings a smile to your face, and you switch over to the other messages to see who's trying to reach you.

“Hi. This is Meliora. I got your number from my dad, he pulled it from the student records for me. Just letting you know.”

“It's polite to respond, you know.”

“You left a mess when you ran off. I put your stuff away for you. It was throwing off the look of the room. You're welcome.”

You save the number in your contacts for later and debate how to proceed.

You look at your phone for a moment. First things first...

“Srry, at prty, phone mut, ttyl8r”

You look it over and add a smiley face to the end before sending it to Meliora. You switch over to Sammy's number to message her when your phone buzzed in your hand, almost immediately. You see something glimmer in the distance, a brilliant line of pink light rising from the school. You get the feeling you've done something you'll regret later.

“Need to talk, spoke to your uncle about Mark, have an idea and need your input.”

You send it to Sammy before reading the message Meliora sent you. Your screen turns black and your phone locks up. When you try to turn the screen off it vibrates, and red text drifts across the screen.

“Learn how to type properly or next time I'll melt your SIM card.”

When your phone unlocks you have a response from Sammy.

“My mother wants to see me for a little while, sorry. I'll text when I can.”

Well then. You send her a quick response letting her know that's alright and pocket your phone. A familiar impulse kicks in, and you look at the building. You could scale the exterior without much effort, and it would make sense for Sammy's mom to take her upstairs and away from the party.

You approach the wall and examine it. It's not built for climbing, but the style they went with leaves plenty of gaps and places you can grab hold of. You jump up and start scaling the side of the wall, taking your time to move as quietly as you can. There's not a platform, per se, but you can see a ledge a little higher up where you can figure things out. You make your way towards it and test it with one hand before climbing up onto it. You can see part of the second floor from here, as well as a portion of the third. Now it's just a matter of finding the right room.

You hear the door opening below you and you press yourself against the ledge, concealing yourself to the best of your ability. Below you there are two voices, one you recognize as Blake and the other an older female voice. You scoot closer to the edge and peer down at them to get a better look. The woman looks a fair bit older than Blake, though not as old as Stephen.

“Looks like he isn't here.”

Blake nods slightly and walks over to your discarded bottles, picking one up.

“Well, I saw him come out here with dad.”

He sets it down and turns to the woman, who gazes out at the city.

“Do you think he ran off? He can be a little intimidating when he gets angry. Humans are easily frightened...”

Blake sets the bottle back down and walks next to the woman.

“I dunno, he didn't seem like he was angry at him or anything. Maybe we just missed it when he went back inside.”

The woman nods slightly and smiles at him.

“Let's have another look around. Someone must have seen him. I'd like to meet him.”

Blake smirks a bit.

“Sis, you're barking up the wrong tree, trust me.”

The woman rolls her eyes and heads inside.

“Don't you start with the dog puns, you're as bad as dad sometimes. Come on.”
>>
Blake follows her back into the house, and you turn your attention back to the climb. You could double back and rejoin the party, that's not out of the question, but you'd have to come up with an excuse now. If you keep going you'll have to decide if you're sneaking inside or just trying to find an open window to listen at.

You slip back down the way you came. This was a terrible plan, in hindsight. Not that it wouldn't have been worthwhile if it had worked, but your curiousity got the better of you and you're close to blowing your first impression with these werewolves. You manage to get back to the patio without making too much noise, and you open the door, looking around a bit. You head straight for the snack table as people start to notice you, and you grab a pint and down it in the hopes that your display of alcohol affinity might earn you bonus points.

You manage to chug the whole bottle before Blake's sister finds you. She grabs you by the shoulder and gently spins you around to face her, smiling gently. She's not quite as dressed up as Sammy, but she's certainly decked out for the party. She certainly looks the princess role more than Sammy does.

“Hi there. My name is Marie, short for Marigold. I've been looking for you.”

The fact that she's giving you attention seems to be drawing more eyes than usual your way, and you smile at her while trying to ignore the crowd.

“Is that so? I can't imagine why. I'm just a perfectly ordinary human.”

Marie laughs politely, covering her mouth as she giggles and smiling demurely.

“That's not what I heard, vampire killer. You're the one who drove a stake through the heart of Vanessa Althaus, and saved Sammy from her blood debt.”

The boisterous room goes quiet. You're not sure what her game is, but Marie is totally blowing your cover, and as you try to formulate some reply that will allow you to distance yourself from the spotlight, someone cheers.

“Oy! Boy, you there! You're a bloody miracle!”

There are some cheers of assent, and Marie steps back as the crowd descends on you. You're swept off your feet and hoisted onto someone's shoulders, drinks being pressed into your hands as people start to dance and sing and parade you around.

You down one of the drinks, putting your faith in the werewolves to watch out for your liver, and tell your tale, embellishing a little.

Alright, more than a little.

You kinda blow it out of proportion rather considerably, but you've been drinking and the crowd is loving every second of it. You tell them about Sammy's plea for help, how Vanessa came to ruin everything and the standoff that took place. You tell them how Sammy fought against the blood pact, how strong her will was as she struggled to break free. You tell them of Sammy's skill in combat, how even though you knew she was holding back you were hanging in there only barely.

Then you tell them how you threw the stake like a dart, striking Vanessa in the chest, and as Sammy faltered you jump-kicked the stake and took Vanessa to the floor, finishing her off by punching the stake through her chest and nailing her to the roof. With the crowd practically singing your praises, you let them know how you tended to Sammy, made sure she was alright, and got her the care she needed before being invited to the party as thanks. As the werewolves begin to break into song, someone slow-claps rather loudly from the stairs.

“Well done!”

You look over at Mark, looking smug as he applauds 'ironically', stepping closer slowly. Some of the Wolfe clan werewolves keep themselves between you and him, and he moves only as close as the crowd will allow.

“You have my thanks for protecting Sammy. It's good to know that there are humans that can be counted upon in times of need.”

The crowd is uneasy, and whatever you say next better be good.

>Well yeah, of course I'd protect her. I mean, she's my girlfriend.
>I didn't do it for you. Sammy is my friend, and like any werewolf here, I watch out for my friends
>That's me, Mr. Reliable. Got any other vampire problems you need taking care of?

You smile at Mark and motion for the crowd to set you down, steadying yourself.

“Thank me if you like, but I did it for Sammy. She's my friend, a close companion, and she needed my help. I think any werewolf here would have done the same if they had the chance, it's part of sharing a bond and being part of a pack. Besides that though, it was my pleasure to help her escape her unwilling commitment. Freedom is important to me, and as far as I've seen, to werewolves too. I don't think anyone deserves being chained to someone else if they don't want to be.”

There's a soft murmur among the Wolfe clan, mainly muffled laughter and a few people asking other werewolves if you know who Mark is. Mark steps forward slowly, eyes narrowing, his smile unwavering, shrugging his way past a few of the people in his way. It's like he's trying to intimidate you, but maybe you've just had too many beers. Yeah, that's probably it. If you didn't have so much liquid courage inside you, you'd probably be pissing yourself right about now.

“How noble. Well, as I said, you have my thanks. Though you're pretty daring if you want to speak about what werewolves value.”

You nod slightly.

“Is that so? I'm just going by what I've seen, I could be wrong. So, what do werewolves value?”

Mark steps within arms reach of you.

“One thing, and one thing only. The pack. It doesn't matter if you're free or not, only that the pack carries on. The common good, as they say, no matter what suffering you have to endure. And while I appreciate your efforts, Sammy is to be my bride, and I don't want her around pathetic humans like yourself. Kindly make yourself scarce from her life after this party.”
>>
Your phone buzzes gently in your pocket. Sammy might have just gotten done speaking with her mother about whatever they were discussing, and they could arrive any second. The crowd has your back, but you know they might just fold when Jennifer shows up.

You look him dead in the eye and smile. He moved close enough to strike you in a moment of anger, and while you're probably going to regret this in the morning, you figure you'll make it out alive with so many Wolfe's around.

“I'm not part of your pack. If anything, I'd want to be a Wolfe. They care about each other, they're a clan worthy of my deepest respect. So long story short, unless you plan to gut me like a trout, I won't be ordered around by the likes of you. You're welcome to take a swing at me. And... You know, come to think of it, she's not part of your pack anyway. So she can decide what she likes. You said 'going to be', right? So she's not yet. In fact-”

The punch isn't as quick as you expected it to be, but the alcohol in your veins slows your reaction. Still, you manage to avoid his fist with a single fluid motion, dipping around him.

“-if you're going to punch a guest of honor at a party at another clan, are you going to beat her if she ever disagrees with you once she's yours?”

Mark moves to take another swing at you, and you can see him start to shift, his clothes straining at the seams and his eyes turning to a pale gold. The next blow is quicker, but you're in your stance this time, and you move under and past him once again. You move your hands behind your back, as if to remind everyone you're not taking any swings at him. When he lunges at you with his claws one of the Wolfe's steps in and grapples with him, holding him back.

“You wretched little-!”
>>

In this case I feel like the muscle relaxation is working in our favor. We just kinda barely even move out of the way or something and he wiffs a haymaker into landing face first on our beer collection.

>>
There's a sudden loud click, and everyone freezes. You follow the sound and spot a woman who looks like an older Sammy, if you drained every ounce of joy out of her and turned her hair platinum blonde, on the second floor landing. The sound was her stamping her heel down firmly, but the noise echoed throughout the room. Mark returns to human form completely and yanks himself away from the Wolfe restraining him, glaring at you as he steps back a few paces. Sammy pokes her head around the corner and looks at you nervously.

“Can anyone tell me what happened here?”

As she starts to descend the stairs Mark brushes himself off and points a finger at you.

“This human insulted me, so I-”

Jennifer stamps her heel again and Mark falls silent.

“Anyone besides the two bickering pups?”

Stephen emerges from the crowd and moves to the bottom of the stairs.

“Oliver, the boy that saved Samantha, was recounting his tale when Mark interrupted. They traded some barbs and Mark took a swing at Oliver. Oliver didn't lift a finger to defend himself, he simply moved out of the way.”

Jennifer gives him an icy stare as she reaches the bottom of the steps.

“Is that a fact?”

She looks at Mark for a moment and shakes her head briefly.

“I'll be reporting to your family what happened here tonight. You asked to attend, you weren't offered an invitation. And this is how you treat a guest in my home? Run along, Mark. Perhaps we must renegotiate a little further.”

Mark doesn't say anything, he just glares at you and pushes his way through the crowd. Jennifer approaches you slowly, the crowd parting around you.

“Oliver, was it? You have the thanks of the Wolfe family for your assistance. We do not take our debts lightly. Is there something you seek?”

The 20 wasn't in the first three rolls. However, I will tell you this:

You know this is a test. She's trying to work out if you're greedy or whether you think what you've done has no value. Telling her you want to bank the gift might be the worst possible thing to tell her, since it means you don't think it has any urgency whatsoever.

Choose carefully.

>>

Not wanting to be part of the family. Brobe a honorary wolfe is awesome. And it clear the way for us to marry Sammy on the long run since we won't be of other pack.
>>
>>43762936
We can come back to that later maybe, Sammy was the reason we did it in the first place. Sort of. Best not to lie.
>>
You bow your head slightly.

“I'm an orphan. My only family is dead. Here, among these people, I've found warmth and friendliness. Maybe it's asking a lot, but I'd like the chance to become an honorary member of your clan. Whatever it takes.”

Jennifer regards you for a few moments, her expression almost unreadable, before she turns and heads for the stairs.

“Amusing. I'll give you your chance. The full moon approaches. From that night until the next full moon you must impress me. If you can do that, I will accept you as part of our pack. You are free to use whatever means you like. Kill another vampire for us, perhaps, or assist us in negotiations with another werewolf clan.”

When she reaches the top of the stairs she looks at Sammy for a moment, before turning slightly to look down at you.

“If you are found to be lacking then the things you have earned for rescuing Sammy will be taken away. That is the gamble you must make. All or nothing.”

She walks away, and as the clatter of her heels fades to silence the crowd begins to cheer even louder. Sammy hurries down the stairs with a smile, pushing her way over to you and hugging you.

“That was... You didn't lose your cool at all!”

Marie moves in to Sammy's side and smirks a bit.

“Of course not, cousin. I think Oliver here is a bit too clear-headed for that, right?”

You smile at Sammy.

“Mind if we catch up really quick?”

You turn to the crowd.

“You guys get this party going without me, alright? I'll be right back, I just wanna ask Sammy something.”

Someone towards the back shouts at the top of their lungs.

“Just kiss her, ya dumb bastard!”

Several people start laughing, and Sammy turns bright red. You gently grab her by the wrist and head for the patio.

“Maybe some other time. I'm not drunk enough to blame it on the alcohol yet, and I'm not gonna embarrass her like that. Yet.”

As you lead Sammy to the patio the crowd is cheering and laughing, and you close the door and move out of view of the people inside. Sammy is scarlet and shaking slightly. Maybe that teasing was a little too much for her. Hopefully she can tell you're tipsy.

“So, Sammy... I have something I need to ask...”

“...I know you don't like Mark, and after saving your life I've got a claim on you, right? I was thinking I could use it to help you get away from him. What do you think?”

Sammy's eyes widen a bit.

“Wh-What...? I...”

You head for one of the chairs and sit down.

“I'm not asking you to marry me. I plan to leverage my claim to help you out of a bad situation. If it turns out that we're good for each other then it puts us in a good spot, and if not... At least you're not marrying Mark, right?”

Sammy sits down and nods slightly.

“I suppose that's true, I just... didn't think you'd... Nevermind, you just said that it wasn't about that... I mean, I'm a runt...”

She says it with a bit of dejection, and you don't need to be an expect to tell she just got called that by her mom, likely more than once. You reach over and take her hand gently.

“I don't care about that. Sammy, you're my friend. I don't care if you're the best werewolf ever or a runt or anything like that. I hardly even know what most of this stuff means. All I know is that I like you as a person.”
>>
Sammy looks at your hand for a moment before standing up. She closes her eyes and takes a breath, removing her hair clips and letting her hair fall free, exposing her wolf ears. The fur is a lighter color than her hair, almost as blonde as her mother, so either she dyed her hair or someone dyed it for her. She looks at you, her eyes a glimmering silver color.

“...this is what it means. This is as far as I can transform... I'm always stuck in between like this... The only things I can change are my eyes and...”

There's a slight bulge in the back of her dress as she turns slightly, so that means she can hide her tail at least. You stand up and smile at her.

“I think it's kinda cute, honestly.”

Sammy looks away a bit.

“I wish everyone else saw it that way...”

You shrug a bit.

“They don't see things the same way I do, but everyone likes you. I mean, they were so happy that you're safe, right? That's why they're partying so hard tonight. Don't let whatever your mom said to you get you down.”

Sammy nods slightly and looks at you once more.

“I know that, but... She said that I was stupid for getting involved with vampires at all... I... A while ago I was trying to prove I was as strong as the other werewolves, and... there was an accident... I couldn't walk. Vanessa approached me, offered to help... I didn't have much choice... The first time I've seen her in ages and that's all she could say to me... I wish my dad was here...”

You nod slightly.

“You and me both. I don't think any parent has the right to treat their kid like that. I mean, my dad had a purpose behind it, but...”

You grab the patio railing and flip over it, resting your heels on the edge and smiling at Sammy.

“Let's ditch this party for a bit and go for a walk.”

Sammy glances at the door.

“They'll notice we're gone. People will talk...”

You nod a bit.

“People who understand your situation. People who know you better than that. You're not sneaking around with me to screw behind a tree, right?”

Sammy stares at you for a moment, and you keep talking before she can think her way through the shock.

“They won't care. Your mom might cause a fuss, but you weren't even going to be here tonight anyway. We'll go for a walk, get you cheered up, and then rejoin the party. Sound good to you?”

Sammy hesitates, giving the door one last glance, before taking off her heels and jumping over the rail, landing gracefully on the ground.

“If this all goes wrong...”

You leap down from the patio and adjust your shirt a bit.

“Then I'll take responsibility. Now come on, let's find something cool.”

Surely you wouldn't seek to deflower poor innocent Sammy in the middle of the woods somewhere, would you?

Who am I kidding, you'd make her howl at the moon.
>>
>>43763731
Her mother (who you'll remember is overprotective of her) could probably smell it on us both.

bad idea or worst idea?
>>
>>43763760
"You two fucked, didn't you."

"I can explain. I-"

"Silence. Now then..." *sniff* "...You gave her how many orgasms exactly? Six or seven from the scent on her... Interesting. Keep her. She's your problem now."

It wouldn't happen like that, obviously, but...

Not tonight, but soon, once we're in the pack.

I have a feeling even if mom was fine with it, which I doubt, we'd have to deal with dad, who wouldn't be happy.
>>
You offer Sammy your arm with a smile, and she gently takes it once again, leaning on you slightly. You lead her off into the forest, doing your best to keep tabs on where the house is as you venture out. The woods are dark, but your eyes adjust enough that the moonlight lets you see what's ahead. Sammy gently guides you as you explore, letting you take the lead but pointing out the sights along the way.

“Over that way is the pool... We had that put in a few years ago. And down that path is one of the caves I used to explore when I was little. We used to play over there all the time...”

Sammy sighs softly and gives your arm a soft squeeze, and you turn slightly towards the edge of the plateau, directing her towards the view of the city. You find a broad, flat stone and step onto it, smiling at her.

“Have you ever seen the city like this?”

Sammy's eyes light up, and she nods slightly.

“Mhmm... It's always so beautiful... When I was a little girl I always dreamed of going to school at Red Fields... I was going to make all sorts of friends, be a track star, and graduate at the top of my class... I've got some catching up to do...”

Sammy glances at you and blushes, looking away.

“...Thank you. I know I said it before, but... I mean it...”

You smile softly and sigh. You could probably chance kissing her right now, if you wanted, she probably wouldn't mind too much, but you don't know who's watching, and if she does mind it would be a huge mistake. Or maybe you could just reassure her, find the right words to let her know she's past the worst of it.

You point to the city and gently nudge Sammy.

“See that city right there? You're right where you wanted to be. Vanessa set you back, but you told me you could get into the advanced classes no problem. You did all Vanessa's work and your own, and still found time to become the track captain. Just imagine what you can do now. You're free, Sammy. You're going to get that life you dreamed about.”

Sammy gazes at the city with a broad smile spreading across her face, and you sit down, helping her as she kneels down beside you. As she looks out at the city you take a moment to study her face. She catches you staring and blushes, but this time she doesn't turn away.

“What? Is... is something on my face...?”

You shake your head.

“Nope. You're just really pretty. I like looking at you.”

Sammy turns red once again, looking down at her lap.

“I... that... thanks...”

She fidgets, poking her fingers together, and you can see her tail wagging underneath her dress. You're not sure if she's noticed at all, she just sits there looking shy and nervous. You lean back a little more, shifting slightly and pulling out your phone. You set it to camera mode.

“Sammy?”

She looks at you, blushing profusely.

“Yes?”

You take the shot, the moonlight on her face and the lights of the city behind her. She opens her mouth to protest and you turn the phone toward her.

“I wanted to capture this moment. You're free from Vanessa, you'll be free from Mark, and soon you'll be free to choose your own path in life and won't have to worry about your mom calling you a runt like it's a bad thing and not an adorable thing.”
>>
You pocket your phone and Sammy hangs her head a bit, smiling softly.

“You're... frustrating. But not in a bad way. I... don't know how to say it...”

You move back to where you had been sitting.

“Boys tease girls they like, fact of life. It's just the nature of the beast.”

Sammy gently bops your head and giggles.

“Uh-huh...”

You climb to your feet and offer Sammy your hand to help her up.

“We should probably head back. Come on, let's go enjoy ourselves. Sound good?”

Sammy nods a little bit and takes your hand. She holds it for a few moments.

“Oliver...?”

You blink, nodding a bit.

“Yeah...?”

Sammy swallows, before kissing you on the cheek and running off.

“Last one home is a rotten egg!”

You stand there for a moment processing what just happened, before looking over at her. God damn it.

“Cheater!”

You smirk and race after her. She's slowing down enough for you to catch up, but you just know she's going to race away again if you can catch her. There's got to be some way to close the gap properly... Maybe say her tail is lifting the back of her dress up...? It is, sorta, but not enough to reveal anything too risque. Although her long, slender legs look pretty good... No, focus!

You chase after her, making use of shortcuts and rougher terrain to help close the gap. Every time Sammy moves around an obstacle, you leap over or slide under it, and pretty soon you're neck and neck with her. The main problem is that the final stretch it almost a straight line, and she starts to pull ahead bit by bit. She jumps up and starts to hoist herself up onto the patio, and you scale up to it right as she lands. With a smirk she flops onto one of the chairs, sighing. Her eyes return to their normal color and she starts sorting her hair out and hiding her ears.

“That was... pretty fun...”

You nod and smile.

“Yep. Shame you lost though. You went over the railing, not under it.”

Sammy shrugs a little bit.

“A photo finish... I didn't see your hand hit the patio floor, so I don't know...”

She grabs her shoes and wipes her feet off before putting them back on. The roll of paper towels suddenly makes sense to you now. You had barely paid it any mind, but if someone were to shift and run around outside and then try to go indoors, someone would probably say something about it. You grab one for yourself and double check your own shoes, as well as your clothes. Satisfied that you're looking your best once more you offer Sammy your arm once more, and she lets you lead her back into the party.

The snack table looks to have been replenished. Not because there's more there, but because there are different things than there were before. A glass of wine is pushed into Sammy's hand, and someone gives you a shot of something that smells like burnt wood and molasses. You down it and hear a few werewolves cheering as another shot swiftly replaces it.

“Alright lads, he's had enough, now let's get out there and hunt!”

Sammy pales slightly.

“B-But he's only a human, he doesn't have a keen sense of smell, or...”
>>
Someone slaps you on the back and laughs.

“Not to worry, I'll be keeping him out of trouble.”

You turn and spot Stephen, grinning from ear to ear.

“Better get ready, right? We're off to prowl the forest for a bit. There's a vampire near here who's been causing us a bit of trouble. Think you're up for it?”
