You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, and your nephew Ichigo is only now in stable enough condition that you're confident he won't bleed out on the sidewalk.

As Rosa explained it to you while you were sealing his wounds with your modest skills at kaidō, Ichigo has inherited the true ability to use blut from his mother Masaki... which in this instance worked to his disadvantage. Karakura town may be unusually rich in reishi, but the living world just isn't well suited to using quincy techniques because of how little reiatsu there is even in a place like this. In Hueco Mundo or the Soul Society, his blut may have been sufficient to protect Ichigo from Byakuya for at least long enough to escape and get himself healed. But as things stand such limited and yet-untrained quincy powers were far from enough to face a Captain at even one-fifth strength.

“Your own version is a mixed blessing, of course,” Rosa concludes, unusually talkative at the moment. It probably has something to do with the fact that it's suddenly become appropriate for her to lecture you on the finer points of quincy technique.

“You utilize your own reiatsu for blut or hirenkyaku, which means that while your defensive skill is limited by the peak of your own reiatsu you need not worry about suddenly finding some of your abilities too weak to be relied upon... as your nephew here did.”

“I'm just glad he held out long enough that kaidō could help him,” you mutter, swiping your brow with the back of your wrist. “Now, I feel like I'm forgetting something...”

Ishida, who has lain still on the sidewalk since Byakuya and Renji left with Rukia, coughs loudly to get your attention. It seems he doesn't want to be seen begging for help from a shinigami, despite the severity of his own wounds. They're not mortal by any stretch of the imagination, but if left untreated they certainly could claim his life eventually.

“Well, well,” you reply, walking closer to frown down at the young quincy. “What have we here? After the stunt you pulled with that hollow bait, you decided it was a good idea to run off and challenge a Captain and his Lieutenant by yourself? Give me one good reason why I should bail you out instead of letting Darwinian genetics have their way with you.”

“... because you value human life?” Ishida offers hopefully.

You sigh dramatically, resting your hands on your hips and allowing your frown to shift into a mischievous grin. “Say the words “I am an idiot, I got what I was asking for”, and I'll patch you up like it never happened.”

After a moment of silence, Ishida gives in to your demands.

“I am an idiot,” he repeats wearily, “and I got what I was asking for.”

“Good boy,” you nod, kneeling to use your kaidō on his wounds as well. “Now quit being such a baby and hold your shoulder still so I can put your supraspinatus back together.”

When you're done making a functional left shoulder out of a pile of twitching hamburger meat, you think long and hard about what's best to do with these two morons. You eventually decide to...

Even if we don't take Ichigo to Kisuke's place he still is going to unlock his shinigami powers. There is no way Masaki and Isshin will let him go to soul society without as many advantages as possible.
>>43755813
Um what? He very much got punished for it. He was stuck with the knowledge that anyone who died in that incident from a hollow was his own fault. And there was probably some people who were killed by hollows.

he didn't use common sense.

He DID kind of spend the whole time bragging about how he could totally handle it, but yeah. It was not just bone-headed, but also reckless. Ryūken, to whom protection of the living is tantamount to a religious duty, will be quite upset.
>>
>>43755893
Not as upset as Riku though.....

His dad continually told him to stay out of Shinigami business and to just worry about the living.

Events in the whole series have proven his dad right.
>>
So has anything been explained about Ichigo's and Uryu's resistance to be power drained by Yhwach yet?
>>
>>43755908
or Rosa for that matter. She's practically rolling in her proverbial grave.
>>
>>43755964
He didn't want to take it, or it wasn't prominent enough to be taken at the time.

The big question is, why he didn't take Masaki's powers this time around.

My personal theory? Remember after Ishida used Letz Stil and lost his Quincy Powers? Having Yhwach collect your powers is functionally the same, and can be restored the same way, so he -did- confiscate Masaki's abilities, but she was able to get them back.
>>
>>43756012
Wasn't it flat out mentioned that he tried to take Uryu's powers and couldn't? Also He didn't take Masaki's because there are way to many shinigami running around Karakura town
>>
>forgot to mention, update incoming
>kind of a long one
>>
>>43756049

Weren't Uryu and Ichigo the same type, not true Quincies but ones who provide boosts to others, he could not take their powers?

I think since Ryūken was the last 'true' he left him be perhaps.

Likely in this time line, draining the quincies here would alert soul society since they are watching.

Which would let Riku know.

And that would be bad.
>>
>>43755964
There is one interesting thing we learned recently.

You know how Nanao's last name is Ise? Turns out that there is indeed a connection between her family and the Ise Grand Shrine, complete with the family zanpakuto being a variant of the Sacred Mirror. Only this version, is a sword made only to kill gods/those with divine reiatsu.

“Ishida,” you growl at the young quincy. “You know Ichigo better than I do. Help me find his body so we can get him back to Isshin and Masaki. I'll hand you over to Ryūken when we're done.”

Ishida doesn't seem thrilled at the prospect of having to explain the night's events to his father, but also seems to know better than to argue with a Captain. Maybe he's got more common sense than you've given him credit for, or perhaps he's just given up.

“I suspect that his body is back at the Kurosaki clinic,” Ishida guesses. “He probably used that replacement soul of his when he learned Rukia had run away from there.”

That makes sense, and lacking any other real theory to work from you head for the clinic with Ichigo slung over your shoulder. Ishida limps along at your side, his muscles clearly still aching from the fight. Good, maybe this will teach him to use that brain of his instead of charging into a fight blinded by pride. You've seen his test scores: he's clearly got the capacity to make smarter decisions, what he lacks is the discipline.

You barge into the Kurosaki clinic, where you find a nervous-looking mod soul in Ichigo's body sitting in the living room. The mod-soul sees you and Ichigo, as does Masaki from her seat across from her son's body. Isshin, however, only sees Ishida.

“Ishida?” he asks in confusion. “What are you doing here so late at night? Did something happen?”

“Dear,” Masaki replies coolly, “Ishida is not alone. Your sister and our son are there too.”

“Wait,” the mod-soul asks, suddenly far more panicked even than he was when you arrived, “you mean you know that I'm not Ichigo?”

Isshin shrugs. “While you've been in my son's body, have I ever once called you Ichigo? I'm not as dumb as I act you know, Kon.”

>>
>>43756145
Eh, unless circumstances turn truly dire, it's effectively been removed from play.
>>
>>43755964
Yhwach hasn't done that at all in this timeline as far as I can tell.
>>
>>43756191
While on the one hand, it's nice that Masaki is still around, on the other, that means that we've already gotten Yhwach's attention to the point where he has to plan around us. That's bad.
>>
>>43756153
“The real question should be why our son is covered in blood,” Masaki continues, staring at you with those same cool eyes. “I was under the impression a certain Captain had been looking out for him?”

After looking Ichigo's body over briefly and finding no convenient way to pop the soul pill out of him, you decide to simply punch Kon in the stomach. The mod-soul's eyes widen in surprise as the pill shoots from Ichigo's mouth and rolls across the floor. Isshin tosses a lion plushie at Ishida, who pops the pill in its mouth.

“You could have warned me!” the lion grumbles loudly.

“Can it,” you warn him as you shove Ichigo's spiritual body roughly back into his physical one. “I'm tryin' to concentrate. This isn't as easy as it looks.”

Once the task has been accomplished, you request that Tenkotsuki convert your own reigai into a more visible form for Isshin's benefit. He seems surprised that you can manage such a feat, though Tenkotsuki is disappointed by the fact that he doesn't ask how you did it.

"Better," you announce, stretching your newly-physical body a little. "Now, I believe you were asking why Ichigo's all beaten up?"

Masaki nods. She's been patient this whole time, far more so than you'd figured.

Basically, allowing what had to happen to happen. Ichigo needed to not have the stolen powers from Rukia in him to develop his own powers and keep the Soul Society off his back.

>>
>>43756483
what are you talking about, taking hostages is stupid. death threats have better leverage. Taking a hostage is stupid because hostage negotiations is essentially high-stakes haggling for commodities that both sides wants to get away with. Death threats on the other hand is a one-way demand which benefits the one who makes the demand regardless.
>>
>>43756509
“Ichigo left to follow my subordinate Rukia,” you explain. “In doing so he ran into Lieutenant Renji, whom he nearly bested, and Captain Kuchiki, Rukia's adoptive brother.”

“And so they did this to him?” Masaki asks.

You nod. “They did. I suspected trouble, so I followed Ichigo. I allowed Byakuya to strike your son's saketsu and hakusui in an attempt to return the spiritual abilities he borrowed from Rukia to return to their original owner. When Byakuya attempted a third strike, which would have been immediately fatal, I intervened.”

Isshin seems concerned about your initial willingness to allow his son to be stabbed multiple times by another Captain. “Why did you wait? I find it hard to believe you would simply hesitate, so you must have had a reason.”

“I knew that Ichigo would never be left alone otherwise,” you explain. “I also concluded that Rukia's stolen powers were likely interfering with his own growth. The only way to set things right for him was to allow Byakuya to destroy that power. As I predicted, Ichigo's own powers found a way to protect themselves from Byakuya's blade, leaving him in the condition you see now.”

Masaki's eyes soften a little, though her tone is still stern. “I understand, Lady Riku. Thank you for saving my son's life.”

“One thing bothers me,” you frown. “How did Ichigo give you the slip?”

“We've always let our son deal with his own affairs,” Masaki replies simply. “By the time I noticed the Captain and Lieutenant-level reiatsu in Karakura town, it was already too late to stop Ichigo. I was also concerned for the safety of our daughters... so I placed Ichigo's safety in your hands.”

“That must have been hard,” you nod. “Even after a century, I still worry about mine.”

“It's part of the job, isn't it?” Masaki sighs.

“Urahara may be able to tell you more about Ichigo's current condition,” you tell your brother and his wife, turning to leave the Kurosaki home. “But if you asked for my advice, I'd suggest you start training the boy. He strikes me as the type to run off again on his own as soon as there's a reason, and the next time he does none of us will be there to bail him out.”

Isshin and Masaki seem to ponder your words carefully as you leave with Ishida. The trip to the Ishida family home is a short one, though the young quincy strikes you as increasingly worried about his impending welcome.

Ryūken's wife, a gentle-looking woman with dark hair, greets you formally at the door, ushering you into a western-style parlor room. Predictably Ryūken is sitting quietly in wait, a cigarette hanging from his lips and a glare in his eyes at his son's disobedience.

“What did I tell you?” the man asks sternly. “You have no talent, Uryū. Certainly not enough to be of any value when a shinigami is concerned.”

“His opponent was a Lieutenant,” you observe. “Can't expect a rookie to deal with that as his first fight with a shinigami.”

“No talent,” Ryūken repeats coldly.

His wife seems to step in before her son can respond. “Ryūken, perhaps we should let our son explain himself? I'm sure he has a good reason for defying our wishes.”

“Kanae,” the man replies, his tone suddenly softer but no less serious. “This is a grave concern. It doesn't matter what his reasons were, our son cannot allow himself to be dragged into spiritual matters! He's far from ready for such a responsibility!”

“I've already told you,” Uryū responds, agitation replacing nervousness. “If you refuse to act against these hollows, then I will do so in your place!”

“What does it mean to be a quincy,” you muse quietly. “Uryū, do you have an answer? How about you, Ryūken?”

Both Ishida men stare at you in puzzlement, while Kanae seems amused. It almost strikes you that she was prepared for you to take this sort of approach... you wonder how much Sōken told his son and daughter-in-law about you.

“The world has changed since my day,” you continue. “It's changed from Sōken's day as well. Change stops for no one and nothing, not even the quincy. What it means to be a quincy living in this world shouldn't be determined by a fragmented understanding of what happened to Rosa Rosette's generation of quincy, nor to Ishida Sōken's. It needs to be defined by the quincy that are alive now, today, living in this world and no other.”

“To do that, both of you need to rethink the issue from your own perspective and discuss it like reasonable adults.”

The Ishida share an uncertain glance, while Kanae smiles.

“Thank you, miss Captain,” she tells you with a slight bow. “I appreciate your candor.”

“Think nothing of it,” you reassure her. “Now if you'll excuse me, one of my associates is in a lot of trouble... haven't decided how much yet.”

“Oh dear!'” Kanae exclaims, likely understanding that the shinigami responsible for her son's condition are probably on your list of people to deal with in the coming days. “Please, don't allow us to keep you waiting!”

Upon your return to the Seireitei, you head for the Onmitsukidō headquarters to find Yoruichi. When you arrive in her room you find it conspicuously empty, obliging you to shut your eyes and extend your senses to search for her reiatsu. Which is also absent.

Yoruichi isn't in the Soul Society... at your level and given your familiarity with her, you would be able to sense her if she were.

Looking around her room you notice first that her uniform is neatly folded beside her futon, which is unusual. Further investigation reveals that her scant wardrobe is missing one outfit: Yoruichi's traditional hunting outfit, which she wears only rarely when out in the Rukongai practicing her falconry. Sure enough a thorough search of the grounds reveals that her prized hawk is absent from its cage. You have no doubt that her little brother's horse is gone as well, as Yoruichi mentioned a while ago he was having trouble getting it to follow his lead.

But had she gone hunting, you'd still know it. That only leaves two explanations: that Yoruichi's been killed, which you find incredibly unlikely, or that she's in the living world using her absent hunting gear and hawk as an explanation for her disappearance. After all it's known that she does that from time to time. Apparently that's what Yoruichi was out doing when she first met you, trying to find herself a new hawk after the one she had was mysteriously poisoned by tainted meat.

You can think of one sure-fire way to test this theory.

>You're pretty sure that if you went to the Valley of Screams you'd find a confused hawk and an upset horse. Verify that.
>Risk it and contact Urahara directly.
>Take it on faith and go visit Rukia.

>>
>>43758369

She should be handling stuff on her own. Likely she is properly assisting Urahara. Riku can prep things on the Soul Society side.
>>
>>43758132
You trust Yoruichi implicitly, and have for more than two hundred years. Now's not the time for that to change... after all, even if she apparently felt she couldn't tell you what she was doing outright she left you more than enough to figure it out on your own. You can't think of anyone to whom she'd afford the same courtesy, regardless of the risk involved.

It's just like back when you were still her Lieutenant, picking up on the subtlest of body language when she'd wish you luck on a mission.

Instead of worrying about her, you leave to find Rukia. First you head to Rangiku, who is in your office drinking tea with a worried look on her face.

“Captain!” she greets you hurriedly when she spots you. “They wouldn't let us keep Rukia in our own facilities. I tried to argue...”

You sigh heavily, completely unsurprised at the measure. “They took her to Sixth Division, didn't they?”

Rangiku nods silently and you continue. “It makes sense. It's a contentious situation, so they'd want her kept by the Division which captured her instead of a Division where anyone could be sympathetic to her.”

“That's horrible,” Rangiku mutters. “Using the Divisions against each other like that. It's part of why the Seireitei is so spread out, right?”

You chuckle grimly, tussling your daughter's hair. “I came to that conclusion too, honestly. If you were the Central 46, would you trust us?”
>1/2
>>
>>43758439
“Probably not,” she admits dejectedly. “But that's still not how it should work.”

You can't argue with that.

Rukia is being held in the Sixth Division barracks, under light guard. You can feel as you approach that her powers still have yet to return, and her plain white robe serves as a visual reminder that so far as anyone else is concerned she barely qualifies as a shinigami in her present state, if at all.

“How's the food?” you ask her quietly.

Rukia shrugs, trying to appear unconcerned. “Not too bad. They have a Fourth Division officer looking after me, so unlike the rest of my brother's Division he has some practical skills.”

“They spend a lot of time writing poetry and playing go over here?” you joke.

Your Commando barely stifles a giggle. “And it's not even good poetry, either... don't let any of them get their work published, Captain!”

“I don't know what purpose it serves,” you tell Rukia softly, “but none of this is an accident. Your meeting Ichigo, your slow recovery, your arrest. I'll get to the bottom of it all, but first I need you to tell me exactly what happened in the world of the living.”

Rukia recounts her experiences: how almost immediately upon arrival a powerful hollow appeared near the Kurosaki clinic, and about how she had trouble sensing its reiatsu. It's a familiar story by now, you tell her. Hollows that can hide their spirit energy aren't new at all, but their repeated reappearances are unusual. You allow her to continue, as she explains how she was caught off guard by Ichigo charging the hollow attacker to protect his younger sisters. That seems to fit his personality.

“Then I put myself between him and the hollow,” Rukia explains, concern etched into her features as she no doubt remembers the feeling of giant, impossibly white teeth crushing her torso. “I don't know why I did it. In retrospect I should have stopped it with kidō... it's as if I simply stopped thinking, and my body moved to shield him of its own accord.”

The way she described that was interesting, but ultimately you doubt you can tease out any additional meaning to it at the moment. So for now you simply press her to continue her story.

“And why did you transfer your powers to him?”

“Desperation,” Rukia replies calmly. “I won't lie about that. Ichigo's family needed my protection, and in that moment I failed them. It was all I could do to ensure that he could defeat the hollow on his own, or else we would have all been killed anyway.”

“I take it you went to the Urahara shop after that?”

She nods quietly. “Mister Urahara was the one who provided me with a gigai for my stay in the living world.”

“Any other important details?” you press. “Anything, even if it seemed minor at the time.”

“Well,” Rukia frowns deeply. “I do remember Urahara saying that he was giving me an upgraded gigai. Said it was a reiatsu-blocking type that could avoid detection.”

That could explain Rukia's slow recovery... or it could just be that giving one's powers to someone means you recover slowly. There's really no way to know for sure unless you examine the gigai itself and determine whether it was the cause or not.

“Where is this gigai now?” you ask.

Rukia shakes her head solemnly. “Destroyed. On orders from the Central 46. I was told it was to drive home the fact that there was no chance for me to flee back to the living world.”

“So,” she continues wearily, “how much trouble am I in?”

“Depends on how the Central 46 feels,” you admit. “It could be a light punishment, or it could mean death. There's no way to know what those old fools are thinking with so little information, but to destroy your gigai...”

“Bad, I suppose?” Rukia concludes. “Well, Mirai told me once that a Commando's life is supposed to be in danger, so I guess this is just par for the course.”

“Not really,” you insist quietly, trying to counteract her fatalism. “This isn't how things should work at all, Kuchiki. I'll see what I can do for you, so sit tight.”

“And try not to get too down, okay?”

Rukia, who is clearly denying herself the luxury of crying, nods silently before you leave her to her isolation.

It's been ten days since you returned to the Seireitei, and ten days since Yoruichi first disappeared.

"Riku, wake up!" Rangiku shouts, rolling you out of bed.

Groaning loudly, you rise to your knees and shake yourself fully awake. "Right, what's happening? I was having a lie-in."

"We've got a report from Jidanbo, at the gate!" she tells you. "Apparently it's serious, and he's moved to engage an intruder!"

An intruder? At this time of the morning? That's pretty inconsiderate.

You sprint at your best possible speed towards Jidanbo's gate, pulling on your usual garb and accessories as you go. After all it wouldn't do for someone who's technically your subordinate to see you with bed hair. That sort of mistake's only allowable when it's Yoruichi doing it, because you already know she didn't give a damn. But in this case, you have an appearance to maintain.

When you arrive at the scene, you're honestly shocked to find that the giant has already been defeated by a familiar orange-haired punk in a shinigami uniform. His blade, however, has changed. It's similar in size, but vastly different in shape and utterly lacking in any fittings aside from a white cloth wrap about the tang. The slender blade itself isn't quite like a khopesh's wicked hook, instead possessing a clean, smooth, almost “feminine” curve to it as the single-edged blade sweeps back into the line projected by the curved tang. The overall shape reminds you more of the upper arm of a bow than a sword.

“Astute,” Rosa observes silently. “I wondered what his own weapon would manifest as.”

The massive Gatekeeper starts to panic as he sees you walking towards him. “Captain Kusajishi... I beg your forgiveness, ma'am...”

You look out at Ichigo's group. Yasutora and Arisawa are here, and the latter recognizes you even though she has the good sense not to say anything about it. Ishida avoids your gaze, and behind him is... that's not right. That's not right at all.

“... which one of you did that to my cat's tail?” you ask in a dangerous tone, eyeing Yoruichi's clearly injured tail.

Ichigo looks around himself before speaking up. “Well, that'd be me I gue...”

He doesn't get a chance to finish answering you before your foot is planted firmly in his gut. The unexpected blow sends him tumbling across the ground head over heels until he's well beyond the gate. Little splatters of blood dot the stone along his path, and his friends all gather around him in obvious alarm. Even Yoruichi seems a bit surprised you went to that extreme as you stride confidently past the equally-shocked gatekeeper, your Captain's cloak fluttering dramatically in the breeze in what must paint one hell of a dramatic picture.

“What the hell was that for!?” Ichigo demands loudly, clutching his gut. He's about to say your name, but he finds four paws covered in sharp claws colliding with his face. He's bowled over by the feline attacker, as she pads carefully around his head and turns to face you.

Yoruichi heaves a sigh of resignation, her voice familiarly gravelly and masculine in her cat form. “That would be Kusajishi Riku of the Shiba Clan, Captain of the Ninth Guard Division. She's stronger than any of you could possibly comprehend. There is absolutely no chance of passing this way now.”

No doubt she's already realized that she would either have to reveal herself, or you would need to let Ichigo's group past. Withdrawal is the only way to handle this impasse without revealing your partner's complicity in the invasion or your own.

“Jidanbō,” you mutter angrily, now rounding on the gatekeeper and playing your part. “We don't pay you to open the gates, numbskull. I'll sort you out later.”

You tuck one fingernail behind your thumb, and after building pressure there you flick towards the gatekeeper, sending him hurtling back into the Seireitei with the overwhelming concussive force. As the gate slowly begins to grind shut under its own massive weight you step backwards to meet it with your right hand. Ichigo manages to sit up, and his little group stares in wide-eyed shock as you hold up the tremendous gate Jidanbō struggled to lift in one hand. It's no doubt a display of raw strength not even Tatsuki was prepared for.

“I'm afraid we're closed for business,” you tell the group simply. “Try again later.”

"She didn't even use her sword!" Ichigo groans as the gate slides to a close.

"So, Gin," you announce as the gatekeeper struggles to his feet. "Sorry you came out all this way for nothing."

"Not at all!" your son insists, his enthusiasm unusually genuine. "That was quite the spectacle, though I suppose the Head Captain won't appreciate it."

“He touched the tail, Gin,” you mutter angrily. “He should just be grateful I permitted him to live.”

“And he was quite rough with it, too,” Gin grins maliciously.

“Gin...”

It takes a few minutes to reach the Head Captain's chambers, where you find that the other Captains are in the process of assembling. Suì Fēng and Ukitake are the only ones conspicuously absent: the former is probably still issuing orders or something, and the latter is probably not coming due to his illness.

“I see you have arrived, Captain Kusajishi,” Yamamoto growls. “And Captain Ichimaru as well... take your positions.”

“Captain Ukitake ain't here yet?” Gin observes almost playfully. “That's not like him at all, keepin' people waitin' like that!”

“Unfortunately he fell ill yesterday, and is recovering in his quarters,” Byakuya responds. “He should be fine in a few days, as usual for him.”

“Well that ain't good!” Gin replies. “I should send him some hoshigaki, he always likes 'em when he's sick.”

“Where's Lady Shihōin at a time like this, I wonder?” Aizen ponders aloud, noting the absence of your partner in the hall.

“Yeah,” Kenpachi growls. “I've heard she's got her Commanders runnin' things for her right now. Wonder what she's up to...”

“Why is everyone looking at me?” you observe warily. “Lady Yoruichi's my friend, not my daughter. She doesn't have to report all the details of her private life to me, and really I'm glad she doesn't.”

It's true. While you willingly share a lot of your personal lives, even you have boundaries. Besides, you're still angry enough that Yoruichi's tail was hurt that you're in no mood to play twenty questions with your fellow Captains about her.

“Old men gossiping like old women,” Hitsugaya mutters. “Leave me out of it.”

“Go easy on us, Captain Hitsugaya,” Shunsui sighs. “You know how bored we old folk can get.”

Unohana glares at Shunsui, understanding full well that she's been implied to be part of his “old folk”. When Suì Fēng arrives, thus completing the assembly of Captains, Yamamoto calls the meeting to order.

“We are here to face a potential threat to the Seireitei,” he begins loudly with a tap of his staff. “Intruders from the human world have assaulted the White Road Gate.”

“From the human world?” Shunsui asks, clearly surprised. “Been a long time since anything like that happened, Old Man.”

“Nevertheless,” Kurotsuchi replies. “The data logs from the Dangai are conclusive. The anomaly that brought the intruders here originated in the human world.”

“I thought the technique for opening a passageway to the Soul Society from the human world was lost centuries ago?” Aizen observes. “Who on that side would even know it?”

“It is possible that Urahara Kisuke has something to do with this,” Yamamoto explains. “The Central 46 is placing this event at a high priority due to that fact. Now, Captain Kusajishi, would you care to explain to us why these invaders are still alive after meeting you?”

All eyes are on you again.

“I figured they were just some punks,” you lie. “Kicked one of them into next week and shut the gate in their faces, figured that was that. Besides, I thought you and I had a mutual distaste for killing children, Old Man?”

Kenpachi doesn't seem to buy your story. “Yer tellin' me you kicked 'some punk' and he survived, an' that didn't strike you as weird?”

“She even said that she held back, Kenpachi,” Kurotsuchi shrugs. “Though I suppose I shouldn't be surprised when a muscle-bound moron with no sense of subtlety proves to be hard of hearing as well.”

“What's that, you sideshow freak?” Kenpachi snarls, stepping out of his place in the ranks of his peers.

Shunsui sighs, pulling his ridiculous straw hat down over his eyes. “Oh, good grief.”

“Here they go,” Suì Fēng chuckles next to you in line. You and she both know this strategy by now for avoiding the interest of the other Captains: string together two or three sentences in a response and at least two of them will find a reason to bicker over it. From there you just stoke the flames, and watch as everyone forgets what the original issue at hand was.

Like clockwork.

“So why is Lady Yoruichi absent?” Suì Fēng continues as Kenpachi and Kurotsuchi's hurled insults take center stage. A few of your neighbors hear your explanation that she took her hawk and left her uniform, allowing your fellow Captains to make the conclusions based on those completely true facts.

“I thought you said you weren't her mother?” Hitsugaya cocks an eyebrow at you.

You shrug. “I lived with her nearly a century. I can make educated guesses.”
>1/2
>>
>>43761211
“ENOUGH!” Yamamoto roars, silencing the two bickering Captains. “Captain Kusajishi, your failure to kill the intruders is understandable in light of the circumstances. You cannot be fairly blamed, though the Central 46 will be displeased. Now, how should these intruders be dealt with?”

“Kill 'em, of course,” Kenpachi replies immediately.

“Study them, naturally!” Kurotsuchi contends. “Imagine what we could learn from such rare specimens!”

Shunsui seems unimpressed. “Do we have to do anything?”

>I think we should capture them for interrogation. Shouldn't be hard, they should stick out like a sore thumb in the Rukongai.
>They may find an alternate way of breaching the Seireitei's defenses. Wait for them to come to us, capture them, then whatever.

considering how low threat they are it might be worth it to run that like a invasion drill, see if they can find and exploit and weakness in our defenses so we can fix them before an actual invasion comes. also might be good to give command over to the lieutenants to see how they handle a mild crisis.

“We're ignoring the big question here,” you observe. “Why are they even here, given their strength?”

Byakuya leaps on the question with an understated gusto. “Rukia.”

“That's right!” Gin observes almost cheerfully. “She was hidin' out in that school, wasn't she? The one in Karakura town?”

For the first time Komamura speaks up from behind his giant helm. “They will not be allowed to thwart justice. Who they are and what their goal may be is irrelevant.”

“That's right,” Tōsen agrees. “If that is their motivation, the law of the Seireitei must be upheld.”

“And the law of the Seireitei prohibits needless killing of humans,” Unohana points out calmly. “Do not be so eager to kill in the name of justice, Captain Tōsen.”

“We must each prepare our own Divisions to deal with these invaders,” Yamamoto concludes sternly. “But the defenses of the Seireitei will hold long enough for me to sleep on the issue. Return here tomorrow morning and I will decide the correct course of action.”

“Lady Yoruichi may be on the wrong side of the wall,” Shunsui observes.

Yamamoto nods. “The Commanders of the Onmitsu will be informed. We will have to progress without the Executive for the time being.”

After a few niceties exchanged with Suì Fēng, you excuse yourself and head back towards Ninth Division headquarters. You find Rangiku awaiting you there.

“So, what's going on?” she presses.

"A bunch of kids from Karakura came over and tried to get through the White Road Gate,” you explain. “I got them to knock it off, but not before the whole Seireitei went on alert.”

“So I guess we're expected to mobilize?” she concludes.

“That's right.”

Once the fireteams of Ninth Division are assembled, along with Rangiku and your three free Commandos, you address the crowd. Even the cooks have turned out to hear what you have to say.

“The Seireitei may soon come under siege,” you explain. “The invaders are humans with spiritual powers. Their strength is unknown. Their goals we can only guess at. But that's precisely what the Ninth Division has trained for, isn't it?”

“Our Division faces the unknown together, with a professional pride and an ethic unknown among the other Divisions. That's how we've served the Seireitei since I took over this Division, it's how we'll serve tomorrow, and it's how we'll serve until the day my successor wrenches control from my frail old fingers a millennium from now!”

“So do your duty, stay true to your squads, and have faith in the strength of our Ninth Division!”

The cheers take a while to subside, and eventually you give your final order. “When you see the enemy, take them alive and bring them back here. We'll do this thing right, figure out what's behind this invasion, and settle things ourselves. Your Squad leaders will issue further orders when the time comes, so for now ready yourselves however you see fit. Dismissed!”

With a thoughtful nod to your Commandos, you silently warn them that they'll need to be ready to step up above and beyond the rest of your Division during this battle. Not just against the possibility of a threat without, but the certainty of betrayal from within...
>>
Just think, when everything is done and way in the future, the 9th division will be printing brochures in the future for the beach resort they have in Riku's valley of screens eventually.
>>
>>43761903
The morning of August 3rd starts just after sunrise, with the clanging of alarms all throughout the Seireitei. After being ordered to kill or capture the intruders by the Central 46, Yamamoto gave each Division free reign over how to handle any invader they encounter. With that, the various shinigami Divisions slept fitfully with the knowledge that at any point they could be called upon to muster.

You yourself didn't bother sleeping last night at all, instead standing vigil atop the roof of your empty office. The early morning light is joined amidst the din bells and alarms by a bright light that collides with the protective dome high above the Seireitei. Rather than being destroyed, as it should by all rights be, the orb of light seems to suspend itself in the barrier itself... you realize that this is Kūkaku's work for certain. A canonball designed to penetrate the barrier around the Seireitei seems like it would have been a fun side project for her, but right now it's serving as the means of insertion for Ichigo and his classmates.

A high risk, high reward strategy to be sure. And it isn't long before you see the risk become reality.

The orb bursts, leaving a crackling gap in the barrier around where it had been suspended. As the barrier re-establishes itself it sends several objects careening towards the ground, each engulfed in a white aura of reishi like falling comets.

One falls quite near your headquarters amidst a sharp sound of shouts as watching shinigami rally to face the threat.

Presumably they find nothing there, since a familiar feline presence makes itself known at your ankles.

"Well," Yoruichi grimaces, "that could have gone better."

Also on whether Yoruichi decides to ride on Riku's shoulder for a while rather than running around randomly helping people for three days straight.

There was a set of circumstances where you could have gotten both Masaki and Ryuken. There was also a scenario where you could have gotten Masaki. After this is all over you can remind me, and I'll explain some of the reasoning behind how things have been playing out. But since there are still several different outcomes at several different stages in the game, I can't explain it just yet.

Not especially, no. Orihime just wouldn't last very long in this version of events despite her technically quite broken powers. Instead you have Tatsuki (for the time being), whose powers are no less broken but have a much lower potential for broad, setting-warping abuse.

Orihime has 0 battle sense and no real offensive power. Tatsuki at least has good melee abilities, good fighting instinct with her other skills.

With the rise in difficulty due to Aizen having to deal with true op forces she would be lucky if caught right away.
