Even after the long walk through the eastern forests, the time taken walking the last few miles to the manor helping along Lucus' damaged golem feel frustratingly long. Plenty of people stop to stare, or at least give a sideways glance as they hury by, curiosity overcoming decorum as they see the Raziel helping along another half-broken old golem, stooping to support the slightly smaller artifice. I would like to hope it looks dignified, but I have my doubts.

Soon, the walls of the manor stand before us, and I help Ose in through the gate first before Raziel passes through, the entranceway not really designed to allow two golems to pass through side by side. By the time I've helped Lucus' golem over to rest on the grass next to the hanger, we seem to have attracted a small crowd of staff.

Lucus powers down what flickering life remains in the golem as Raziel kneels, both cockpits opening, though Lucus' requiring a few sharp kicks from within to make the dented, rusting steel react to his commands.

“Lord Sief, welcome home,” a familiar voice calls, Loren beaming up at me from the ground as I climb down Raziel's kneeling form.

“It's good to be back, Loren,” I smile, glancing around.

Looks like there's a few other servants loitering respectfully, either out of curiosity or because they're expecting to be given something to do, while Virgil and his few remaining assistants emerge from the hanger to take a closer look at the two golems, the artificer blanching as he starts to recognize the full extent of the damage that he's going to be expected to fix.

“It looks like you've had quite an eventful trip. Shall we prepare a bath and meal, and a room for your guest?” Loren continues, stepping forward, looking from me to Lucus and back, a catlike grin passing across her features for a moment as her gaze lingers on me. I suppose I should be thankful that there's a crowd, or I might be being subjected to a rather more aggressive welcome.

“Yes, thank you Loren,” I nod, keeping an eye on Lucus as he stares at the manor, the servants, everything, muttering to himself a little, though for the most part looking far more calm than he has been up until this point.

There's plenty of things to deal with now that I'm back, though most of the longer term things can wait until after I've had a day to settle back into the place. While I'm waiting for that meal however...

Loren gives a slight bow, excusing herself as she goes to prepare things for us, leaving me once again rather amazed by how easily she seems to be able to turn on and off her professionalism.

Glancing over at my guest, Lucus seems content enough that I think I can risk leaving him be for the time being, which is just as well, as I was hoping to have a private word with Sir Paxton first of all.

“Lucus, I just need to take care of something, the servants will show you where to go.”

“Oh, yes, thank you Sief,” Lucus nods, turning to talk to one of the servants, who remains polite enough not to show a reaction to my guest's dishevelled appearance.

Making me way around the side of the building, I find Sir Paxton where I expected. My mentor's morning routine predates my birth, back to when he was just a young infantryman. If there's something important enough to Sir Paxton to warrant skipping it, short of a titan attack I suppose, I've yet to discover it.

I stand and wait by the wall for him to finish his lap of the gardens, the old knight slowing to a halt alongside me a few minutes later.

“Sief, you're back, and in one piece.”

“So it seems, though not for lack of trying on the part of several giants,” I smile, my mentor giving a slight nod.

“It's good to see all my years of training you weren't wasted. I take it you have something about your time away you want to talk to me about?”

I give Sir Paxton a quick rundown of the events of my trip into the Iquani Expanse, minus some of the more personal details of course. He listens in silence, frowning deeply as the story continues.

“So Mama Stump and her family are gone. Good, the world's a better place for it. I've never heard of this cult the giant told you about, and given what we do to titan cultists in the Empire, they most likely take great pains to keep things that way.”

I nod, a knot of frustration in my chest. I have names, for both the cult and Mama Stump's contact, but the Empire's a big place, and I'm somewhat lacking in terms of contacts beyond my family's lands.

“What about Lucus?” I ask, setting it aside for now.

“The creature you encountered sounds like a Leshy. They're very rare, to the extent that even in a forest of that size there's probably only one or two. We always knew they were in there, but I've never heard any reports of anyone ever encountering one anywhere near here before.”

“What did it do to Lucus then?”

Sir Paxton folds his arms, watching a passing cloud, his expression stern.

“I'm no expert on Leshies, and I'd wager even most academics are going to give you a load of guesswork and hearsay on them, but they do have powerful magic in them. If you get lost in their forest, and are unlucky enough to draw their attention, then you stay lost forever, cut off from the world. That's the story anyway.”

“So you think it... what? Kept him trapped in the forest while all that time went by?”

(cont)
>>
>>43742877
“It's possible. magic is a terrible, unnatural thing, Sief, monsters and titans use it to twist and break the fundamental laws of our world. That it could warp the passage of time for a man isn't that much of a stretch.

Now that you've wounded it, I wouldn't imagine that it will forget you. If you truly want to open up this trade route you discussed with the princess, then sooner or later that Leshy has to go.”

I rub a hand across my chin, bristly from the long journey home. It seems that there's one more snag to consider in forming the trade route then. Unfortunate, but I can spend some more time thinking through that one later.

“This Lucus then, he said he's from a noble house? Which one?” Sir Paxton asks, turning his head back towards me as the cloud drifts out of view.

“Eranhel, he said it's in the south-west.”

Sir Paxton's face grows stormy, even by his usual stern standards. His brow knotting tight as he turns to face me fully.

“Sief. Have you told anyone else about this?”

“Not yet, no, although I did leave him with a servant, so he might have.”

“There is no House Eranhel, not anymore. It was one of the houses tried for treason in the latter part of the Second Iquani War, a group of houses involved in titan worship planning to usurp the Emperor.”

I remember that from my history lessons, though I hadn't recalled the names of all the houses which participated in it.

“Lucus seemed rather eager to go out to the front line and fight for the Empire, from the way he told it. Perhaps he wasn't a part of his family's plan?”

“Perhaps, or he may just be a good liar. Either way, it would not be good if anyone were to know we were harbouring a member of House Eranhel here.”

>Then we'll just have to keep it a secret

>>

>>
>>43742891
>>Are you suggesting we kill him?

“Are you suggesting we kill him?”

Whatever his family may have done, that still puts a bad taste in my mouth, especially without us knowing if Lucus was even aware of any such wrongdoing, let alone complicit.

“It would be the safest option,” Sir Paxton replies, turning away, pacing along the cobblestones at the edge of the house.

“Though whether it is the best one is a question I leave up to you and your father, this is your house after all. I will abide by your decision.”

I frown, glancing back the way I came. After fighting so hard to bring him back here, it doesn't really seem right, but perhaps he really is a traitor, playing a role for sympathy. I just don't know...

“As you say, Sief. I can't imagine that your father will have any strong feelings on this matter...” Sir Paxton starts, pausing to leave the rest of the sentence unsaid.

“However, you it would still be good to tell him, unless you want me to do it?”

“No, no, when I find him in a state to listen, I'll tell him.”

Sir Paxton nods, glancing over your shoulder as a servant arrives.

“Lord Sief, a bath has been drawn for you in your chambers,” the girl explains, giving a polite bow.

Warlord already told us that as far as the empire is concerned a marriage to Quala wouldn't exist, we can totally pull off a steppewaifu and feudalwaifu
>>
>>43744304
Her culture is cool with it too.
The problem is convincing the imperial girl and sief with the stick up his ass.
>>
>>43744304
It's not a matter or monogamy or polygamy.
A marriage is a big commitment that you aren't supposed to just throw around casually.
I'm 99% sure Sief believes this as well, considering his parents' marriage.
>>
>>43744333
it depends on order I think. If we hordewaifu first, then any feudalwaifu would no what she was getting into, and hordewaifu wouldn't complain.
>>
>>43744282
Wasn't she being more aggressive later on because she doesn't believe sief could win her hand and would at least get a happy memory with him?
>>
>>43744430
You'd have to ask Lordy that.
>>
>>43744333
I'm not liking the casual attitude people tend to have to the "harem route" in this quest myself, but technically having multiple lovers isn't going to be all that difficult thing for a nobleman to get away with.

The issue here would more be that thanks to his various hangups Sief himself is in no way the kind of person to do anything like this without making a big deal out of it.

In regards to a hypothetical Sief that didn't have his hangups however, there wouldn't really be reason to make much of a fuss over the fact that he'd sleep with a maid and have an Iquani lover he spends time with when not at home, even after he marries, unless someone actively made a fuss over it.
>>
>>43744191
The princess is a good, long questline frought with danger, lingering wartime hate, and not too much payout in prestige. Worth it to most.
The princess is one of many daughters, though she is very apealing and down to earth, with a good relation with her brother who might be in line to be the next khan. Tomboys good bestgirls.

I want to see what we have in line about our qt3.14(?) artificer cousin on our mother's side of the family.
>>
>>43744490
Of course, the hypothetical wife would probably not at all be happy with it either but this would be one of those issues that aren't really mentioned because it's easier to ignore than actually get resolved in one's favour.
>>
>>43744430
Well it's not like she had any reason to think we could win her hand in the first place. The difference between early Quala and late Quala is at first we hadn't even proven ourselves enough to "earn" the happy memory.
>>
>>43744535
This is why I say it's all about order! If we get with Quala first, then both Sief gets IC forced into it because he eventually has to admit that imperial law doesn't consider it a marriage so he needs a "real" marriage so he can get legitimate heirs, and it's on the table for the hypothetical wife who has to be willing to marry "that guy with the iquani lover."
>>
Good delicious chocolate kisses though.
Also! Gave Sief reasons to throw pocket sand at people.
>>
“Before that, do you know where my guest is?” I ask, looking down at the slight blonde girl.

“I believe he is in the Hanger, Lord Sief, shall I fetch him for you?”

“No, no need for that, I'll go to him,” I shrug, the girl giving another bow and walking away as I dismiss her.

“Be careful how you break the news to him, Sief, I can't imagine it's an easy thing to hear, especially not after all he's been through,” Paxton rumbles from behind me as I head off for the hanger, the old knight returning to his training.

I find Lucus where the girl, whose name escapes me at present, said, standing in the doorway to the hanger silently watching Virgil and his assistants as they go over Raziel, noting down every piece of the extensive damage the golem took on my journey. I step up alongside him, watching the process for a few moments in silence.

“Are you really alright with leaving all those repairs to an assistant?” he asks at last, voice too low for the artificer to hear.

“Virgil's the artificer in charge, if I can't trust him to do the repairs then they aren't going to get done,” I shrug.

“Oh. That's... surprising. He built your house's golem then? Raziel was it?”

“No. It wasn't him.”

I suppose I must not have kept my tone as level as I'd intended, Lucus giving me a curious glance as I let my gaze drift across the many new scratches on Raziel's surface.

“Lucus, can I speak with you for a moment, privately?”

Lucus gives a humorless smile. “More bad news to break to me, I take it?”

I turn and walk back out into the grounds, finding some solitude by a small grove of trees off in the western grounds.

“It's very different from back home, more tranquil. Hard to imagine what the eastern territories used to be like from how they look now,” Lucus comments, wandering through the grounds, coming to lean against an oak

“The Iquani never really pushed hard here, as I understand it. It was mostly down south that the fighting spilled into our borders. This part of the eastern territories hasn't seen serious conflict since-”

“Since The Righteous Heart of the Forest, right?”

“The last dragon in our lands, since Jartixis fled.”

“-and good riddance to the scaled rat,” Lucus grins.

We stand in silence for a while longer, while I try to find the words, and while Lucus tries to stall the inevitable.

“Alright, Sief, what is it you have to tell me?” he sighs at last, his head down as he studies the root beneath his foot, scuffing at the bark with the toe of his boot.

There's really no easy way to break this to him, I just hope he doesn't snap, a man shouldn't have to take this much bad news in so little time.

“Lucus, I'm sorry. House Eranhel no longer exists, it was one of several houses charged with titan worship and a plot to overthrow the Emperor back near the end of the war.”

I study Lucus' face, the young knight saying nothing, his eyes still fixed to the tree root. The silence stretches on for a long time before he finally brings his foot down off of the root.

“That's not funny, Sief.”

I open my mouth to respond, closing it again as words fail me. What can I possibly say to him to make it better now?

“My father, my family, they hated the titans as much as anyone, more perhaps. My uncle fought against Rakat on the Solary Islands, my father and my mother both stood against Thutis' Drowned Legions, my eldest brother DIED fighting the Drowned Legions in the sixth incursion. Is that really the actions of... of titan worshippers, or traitors?” he snarls, his voice harsh and angry even as I see him blink back tears.

“What happened to my lands? To my family's remains?”

“I don't know, but I could find out for you. In the meantime, my offer hasn't changed, you can stay here, but it would be best if you didn't speak to anyone save myself and Sir Paxton about your identity.”

Lucus sinks down to the ground, sitting at the foot of the tree, his eyes still looked to the roots winding away beneath him.

“Please can you leave me be for now, Sief. I need to... to think,” he mumbles, his voice hoarse.

Sief has issues with alcohol stemming from his father's alcoholism, especially when it comes to people drinking to try and deal with grief.

Make him promise that he won't do anything to make us regret trusting him/anything too stupid
>>
We Really, Really, should have looked into this more before telling him.
As much as we coukd gather about the conspiricy, before speaking with him.
They couldve been adamantly defending an ally of theirs that was acused and was brought into it, they couldve been framed, they couldve been caught burning a giant effigy of the emperor while dancing with giants .

We went right to him with zero proof besides word of mouth.

“Alright, but first I need you to swear you won't talk to anyone about this. I don't need to tell you how bad it would be for all of us if the wrong person found out.”

Lucus' downcast eyes finally meet mine, red and aching with held-back tears.

“I swear it, on my... on my House's name, I won't do anything to bring misfortune to you and yours, Sief.”

I nod, leaning down to rest a hand on Lucus' shoulder for a moment before turning and leaving him to his grief. I make my way back into the manor, my elation at having returned home muted, my mind whirring with yet more questions, as if I didn't have enough to worry about already.

“Sief, I was worried your bath was going to get cold” Loren's voice greets me as I enter my room, presumably alone too, since she dropped the 'lord'.

“Sorry Loren, I had some things to take care of,” I reply, forcing a smile, glancing around, Loren standing to the side of my bed, laying out some fresh clothing, a steaming bath visible through the doorway to my bathroom at the back of the room.

I make my way over to the edge of the bed, sitting down on the soft sheets with a sigh. It feels heavenly after all those nights spent in tents, or worse yet, in the cockpit. Loren's hand comes to rest gently on my shoulder as I sit there, enjoying a moment of peace.

“Your brow is doing that thing again, you'll get quite the wrinkles when you're older at this rate. I'd hoped you'd be a little happier to be home.”

“I am happy, believe me, I just have a lot on my mind,” I sigh, picking myself up from the side of the bed, glancing over at the bath.

“Well, that's a shame. Here I was planning on teasing you a little to welcome you home, but now I just don't have the heart.”

I can't help but chuckle as I look back at Loren's bright smile, a finger resting at her lips. I suppose I really did miss her, even if she can be a little exhausting at times.

“I'm sure you'll find another excuse soon enough.”

“Of course, Lord Sief, as a servant of your household I could do no less. I have to do what I can to fight that frown of yours, even if it is rather handsome in a stern sort of way,” Loren gives a slight bow, smile still playing across her lips.

“Welcome back, Sief, I will admit to missing you a great deal,” Loren continues, starting to turn towards the door.

How was the house in our absence? Any word about the Iquani's trip to the emps, how are the survivors of the giant attacks?

How're you?
>>
“Before you go, how have things been here while I've been away?”

Loren turns back to me, giving a slight smile. “Well enough, thought it's a little lonely here without you around. Your father has not been as... outgoing as usual however, which has made it easier to ensure that the servant girls are actually doing their jobs.”

Hopefully that means that he's been drinking less, though it could just as easily mean his drinking has taken a sullen tone.

“Aside from that, I'm afraid I couldn't say much. The Iquani left for the capital a while ago, I haven't heard anything about that since, news can be a little slow reaching us out here. Oh, but I did run into one of the people you and Paxton saved from that horrible spriggan on a trip into town. She still seemed a little shaky, but far better than when you'd just brought her out of the forest.”

“That's good,” I nod. I could probably ask Thurston about some of the others, at least the ones who came from Venser.

“Oh, still no word back from that letter you sent out, I'm afraid,” Loren continues, counting off each of the things on her fingers.

“That's all, I think.”

“Aside from how you are?” I ask, Loren giving a quiet chuckle.

“Sief, your time away seems to have made you rather more... hmm, I'm not quite sure how to say it, but just a little more.”

“Is it at least something good?” I ask, raising an eyebrow as Loren taps a finger to her bottom thoughtfully.

“Oh, definitely. As for me, I'm the same as always, far better to have you home again. I'm not ashamed to admit that I was worried about you. Now go on, go take your bath before it gets cold,” Loren grins, giving a polite bow and once again turning towards the door.

I sigh, I suppose you could try showing a little appreciation, not to mention that it might be amusing to turn the tables on Loren just this once. I rest a hand on her shoulder, drawing her back around and into a hug. Even as I'm doing this I realize it was a bad idea, the feeling of Loren's soft body pressed up against mine proving to be rather an overwhelming sensation, especially after all that time in the forest.

“Thank you Loren, it's good to be back,” I tell her, trying to ignore the way a strand of her soft hair tickles at my nose.

“Well now, while I didn't enjoy you leaving, if this is the kind of reunion I get, perhaps it wouldn't hurt to send you out and about every now and again,” Loren smiles, her arms wrapping around your back.

I keep her there for a few moments longer, trying and failing to block out the pleasant sensations assaulting my senses.

“Sief?”

“Yes Loren?”

“You really do need that bath.”

>How the hell does Papa manage to pay and drink so much God damn alcohol?
How does he pay for it? Sief isn't sure, probably by selling family heirlooms and dipping into taxes.

How does he drink that much without dying? It's one of the great mysteries of the universe, though he was always pretty hardy.

Some anon said earlier that if we married Quala it wouldn't be valid by the Empire or something what did he mean?

And couldn't we just do an imperial marriage if that was the case?
>>
>>43747588
In general, the Empire only recognizes Imperial marriages as legitimate. If you weren't married in the empire in an imperial ceremony, you're not married in the eyes of the law.

It is possible that exceptions could be made, of course, but that's the standard view.
