"You should be careful," you advise Elia, "We don't know what these crystals even are, in truth."
"They're pretty and shine with light. What's to question?" shrugs Elia, not even breaking his stride.
"You felt that place as much as I did. That fish-woman that gave us these wasn't normal and stones don't shine like fire. They could be dangerous for all we know!"
"If she meant us harm, brother, she had you in her hands," he sighs, "You're worrying too much. They're a good gift and I mean to put mine to use!"
"Would you listen to me?!" you snarl in frustration, laying a hand on Elia's shoulder and spinning him around to look at you. "I don't know what it is, but the crystals feel dangerous to me! I'm begging you brother, be careful!"
Elia frowns and smacks your hand away. "She gave us one apiece, brother! If you want to be careful and hoard yours in some hole in the ground then fine, they're yours to do that, but I will use mine as I wish!" So saying, he turns on his heel and stalks ahead of you, clearly intent on ending the conversation.

Once you return to the camp, it is very nearly summer. Elia immediately sets to work chipping the crystals from his stone, working in secrecy as he fashions them into a fine gift. On the first day of summer, he presents Galit with a finely-worked necklace. Clearly his time helping you with the slings has paid off. He has dyed the string with flowers and berries to make it red as new blood and the crystals, shining faintly blue, hang in a cluster like a pinecone in the hollow between Galit's breasts. She's instantly taken by the gift and although nothing has been officially said yet, she stays by Elia's side from then on, causing your friend to walk taller than he ever has, telling the story of how you and he snatched the crystals from under the claws of a monster to anyone who will listen!

It is currently early summer. You have enough food stored for half a season.

Seeing your chance to learn more about how to properly smoke meat, you fetch your spear and join up with the small band that's planning to depart. It seems they've quite got used to the idea of trading with the strangers and are planning to exchange skins and tools for food. You know their faces and names of course, but you're close to few of them. Elia is staying behind this time, preferring to take his chance to try and win Galit over, rather than wander with you.

The mood is good among the traders. They're all second-rate hunters and are eager to find a new way to support themselves, especially in light of your encouraging tales about the strangers' meat lasting through the winter. "You think they can keep berries so long as well?" asks a young woman with long, dark hair and slightly hooked features, as she walks beside you. You learn that her name is Beren and she seems to quite take to you on the walk, constantly nattering about anything from speculation about the strangers, to what she's bringing. Everyone's a talkative bunch, but she in particular likes to ramble, particularly about herself and in a voice just a little louder than anyone else...
>>
>>43729189
A week after you set out, a shiver runs through the entire group. You're all used to the ways of the valley and can smell a coming storm in the heavy air. You're not far from the strangers now, but the storm could break in the next day or two before you reach them. There's some question about what to do, with several of the more cautious traders wanting to take shelter.
"What? But we're so close! We can make it, no problem, right Trym?" Beren turns to you with an eager look. "And if we make it in time to warn them, that'll make a good impression. They don't know the valley like we do after all!"
"Are you mad? If we're caught out in a storm, we could all be washed away or caught in a landslide," scowls another of the group, shaking his head at the raucous woman.
"Why don't we let Trym decide? He's the only one that's been there," Beren counters. "Come on Trym, let's go already! We're wasting time talking about it!"

What do you do?
>Push on to the strangers camp. It's not far, so you should make it... Maybe. 2d10-2 (Speed -Wound)

"We need to get under cover," you advise. "We can't beat the storm with any certainty. That thing is going to tear through here and we do not want to be caught when it does."
The traders breathe a sigh of relief at your sensible advice, although Beren looks rather put out by your caution. Your group abandons the banks of the river, moving into a stand of trees for shelter from the wind and rain. You stay close to the shorter trees, trusting the taller ones to catch any lightning. It's fortunate that you did so as well, because a few hours later, the air growing heavier and more oppressive by the minute, the crashing roar of rain cascades down the valley like a blanket being drawn over the world. You can watch the grey wall of rain sweeping towards you and you all huddle under your coats and the skins you brought for trade a little tighter, as the grass and trees bend in the oncoming wind.

The storm hits you like a clenched fist, rattling the branches overhead and quickly soaking all of you to your very bones. The wind howls like a wild animal and for the next few hours, you all lose track of what time of day it is, the sun blotted out by the angry bruises of clouds. Thunder crashes and lightning splits the sky, causing your entire party to shake in fear at what elemental force has been unleashed on the world. If you had been out in the open when this hit, there is no doubt in your mind that you would have been killed. With a mighty crash that causes several of the less brave members of your group to shriek in fear, a nearby tree explodes, stricken by lightning and cracking down to its roots.

Eventually however, the worst of the storm passes without any of you suffering more than dampened spirits and skins and even though you have to endure the rain and intermittent gusts of wind, you are mostly safe to spend the night among the trees.
>>
>>43730604
The strangers village seems to have escaped the worst of the storm, nestled in the folds of the low valley hills, but it is still battered and bedraggled as you and the traders approach. At first, you are regarded with suspicion and scorn, but then Myslik spots you in the crowd and gives a welcoming cry, slapping your shoulder and pulling you out. "Friend! You here? Home hurt much. Home strong, clan hurt big. Pssshkow! Big hit. You good!" He puts his brawny arm around your shoulders and indicates the tents and huts his people use. They seem like they've endured fairly well, but many of the tribe are hurt and several (by your count) are missing entirely. "You, me. Hunt soon? Spear good. Keep. You spear." He knocks on your chest lightly, but with his massive fist, it's enough to knock the wind out of you.

With your presence, the traders are accepted much better than their last visit, if what they tell you is anything to go by. Myslik's clan seems to accept them as just 'being with you' and mostly prefer to go through you whenever there's much trading to be done. Beren in particular seems more and more annoyed by this, taking her chance to stay close to you and interject whenever possible, learning as much of their language as she can, so that she can better make herself understood. Myslik in particular seems amused by this, commenting to you one day as Beren tries to push the tools she brought onto one of the strangers, haggling loudly and her arms flailing wildly and expressively. "Woman yours?" he asks, chuckling. "Loud, yes? Mine quiet. Good woman. Yours..." He shrugs, not wanting to insult you and laughs."

Alright so this is a whole plan but

First,

>Help repair the village 3d10 (Strength +Craftsman)

Because it's polite and gives us a better standing with the people here

Then

>Try and reign Beren in. She's going to get herself in trouble 3d10 (Charisma +Leader)
>Try and give the traders a better reputation, so they don't have to go through you all the time. 3d10 (Charisma +Leader)

These seem intrinsically connected and we need to rein her in but also give a boost to the other traders as well

>Try to find out from the strangers how to properly smoke meat 2d10 (Wits +Craftsman)

Then this plan, would be easy to tie in if we are also helping to repair a damaged one.

Let me know if this works or if it would all take too long, I really want to go hunting with Myslik to but that would have to wait until the village is taken care of

Although Myslik is eager to go hunting with you, you have a responsibility to your clan. If the traders are only going to be welcome when you're around, it's only you that is the strangers friend and not your whole clan. That is just trouble waiting to happen, so for the next week, you spend your time helping the rest of your group learn the strangers language and rougher customs. Your people are by no means weaklings, but next to the strangers, everyone has a lot to learn. The strangers prize strength and seem to think that if a thing has any value, someone would already be owning it and hanging onto it. They don't really trust trade, as they think that they're always going to be cheated (an idea that soon has your clansmen wishing they'd thought of actually doing that).

You also find out why Myslik reacted so well to you giving him your spear; gifts are something the strangers will take gladly, but a spear in particular is the symbol of a man who is able to feed his family by hunting; something they seem to prize a great deal. By giving Myslik your spear, you were essentially saying, "I value your friendship more than my own wealth and my family," a show of great trust that you believe he will always treat you well, when you are in need.

Once the traders grasp that 'gifts' are better received than 'trades' everything goes much smoother. They 'gift' the strangers skins and tools and they are then 'gifted' packages of smoked meats. Several of your clan lament how odd everything is, but overall, so long as both parties get what they want, they are satisfied.
>>
>>43732354
Just before you have to leave however, one of the traders comes to you with a grim face. Beren has gone missing. She's not been seen for the last two days. Thinking back, you have noticed things seemed quieter around here.
"What do we do?" you are asked. "Did one of the strangers take her? A wild beast?"
"Maybe she caught Trym's wandering madness and walked off..." mutters someone, before earning a clip around the back of his head.

What will you do?
>Search the village for her. She wouldn't have gone far and no-one will mind you looking in their houses, given your friendship with Myslik
>Look for her in the hills and by the river. Little harm could have befallen her in the village, so she must have gone off somewhere

Such are the trials of popularity, Britfag!
>>
There's quite some resistance to you searching people's homes. The fact that you appear like you're suspecting the whole clan causes a lot of complaining about your rudeness, but that is nothing compared to the uproar when you find Beren! She's tied to a forked stick, driven deep into the ground in one of the tents, a filthy gag balled in her mouth to stop her from yelling. As soon as you free her, she yells for the whole camp to hear that one of the strangers, a hunter by the name of Yoav bound and gagged her, telling her that she was his woman now!

The traders are enraged and immediately call for blood! Yoav, a rangy man with lank, dark hair and whipcoard limbs, tries to make himself understood, but when one of the traders pushes him and reaches for his knife, the stranger is enraged and swings his fist, breaking your clansman's nose with an ugly crunch. Just as it seems there's going to be murder, with the strangers squaring up behind Yoav and Beren clinging to your jacket, there's a roar and Myslik waves in, standing head and shoulders about his people and knocking heads together until there's an explanation.
>>
>>43733187

That's... not good.
>>
>>43733187
"Woman rude!" spits Yoav, "Argue. Always loud loud loud. I ask. Not Trym's woman. Not anyone's woman. She loud, but good woman make sons. More woman for Yoav. She not Trym's, not Trym-friends, so take! She loud, so I-" he mimes forcing a gag into her mouth. "She try run, so I bind! Trym find, Trym-friends angry. Trym-friends try cut!"
Myslik glares over at you and makes an interrogative noise, waving a hand at Beren. She takes the chance to tell her side, causing your ear to ring just a little. "It's all madness! Every word of it! I wanted to trade, but he wanted nothing to do with it! I tried making it a gift like you said and ohhh no, he STILL wants nothing to do with it! I don't want to hear 'no', so I keep trying and he eventually starts asking all sorts of things, like if I'm your woman, like he said! I said no, I wasn't anyone's and... Maybe I smiled at him, but then suddenly he's saying I'm his so I tell him no and he doesn't like that! Next thing I know, he's stuffing that hide in my mouth and pinning me down and if you hadn't found me-!"
"I get the idea," you say, wincing. Beren was getting louder and talking faster the entire time, still clinging to you and casting FURIOUS looks at Yoav.

Myslik shrugs. "Not Tyrm's woman, no-one's woman? Yoav took. Not good?" He looks over at you frowning. "Trym-friends try cut Yoav. Not good." To emphasise his point, the massive hunter cracks his knuckles with a sound like boulders hitting one another. "Not Trym's woman. Yoav's." Just as a few of your clansmen are stepping back and looking worried, Myslik's woman touches her man's elbow and says something quietly, in their own tongue. A slow and cunning smile spreads over Myslik's face. "Hmm... If Trym's woman, Yoav done bad. Loud woman is Trym's?" He raises an eyebrow in your direction. "If Trym's, then Yoav bad. Trym..." He waves his hand, not having the words for it, but clearly meaning you can do waht you like.
>>
>>43733283
Yoav himself is giving his chief a horrified look, while Beren's eyes flick between you and the huge stranger. "Wait... Is he saying what i think he's-? But I'm not-!" All heads turn to look at her and in a moment of miracles, she shuts her mouth... Only to start looking at you strangely. Is she actually weighing her options here?!

What do you say?
>"She's my woman. Yoav had no right to take her."

Look kiddo, you might not know, but Im one of the best, if not the best gamer this board has to offer. I can play any board game and win is pretty much a guarantee. So yeah, I will do everything I can do to get that extra edge, ahead of my enemies and allies alike. I got to fuck a princess and get paid for it, despise my shitty GM tryng to cockblock me, too bad for him Im all maxed. Other players might get jelous because they are not getting any action as you are, might even not do everything you tell them to, even if its obviously the smartest thing to do, but yeah, hate the game, not the player, son. So yeah, I did whored myself and cummed all over the princess. Fucked an orc to death on the same capaign too. Nigga tryed to catch me unnarmed, while I was naked. Big mistake.

"She's my woman. Yoav had no right to take her." The words are out of your mouth before you really have a chance to consider them. Myslik offered you a way out of this mess without the strangers murdering everyone involved and you took it eagerly. Beren's eyes widen suddenly and her mouth drops open in shock.
"I'm what-?!"
"Good!" Myslik claps his hands together, resolving the whole affair. "Woman is Trym's! You tell her, next time, no lie!" With that, he swings his massive hand and smacks the back of his fist across Yoav's head, knocking him sprawling in the dirt, before yelling something, probably to the tune of 'you idiot' at him in their own language. For a moment, Yoav argues back, but when Myslik reaches out, grabs him by the throat and his manhood and lifts him clean off the ground with a snarl, the lanky man quickly and loudly changes his tune, prompting his chief to simply drop him again, rather than hurl him over the nearest tent.

With the whole incident resolved, your clansmen make very fast preparations to leave and you all but run yourselves out of there with the strangers glaring daggers at your backs. They may not have actively sought a fight after Myslik's (or rather, his woman, who's name still escapes you) clever ruse, but not a single one of them is truly fooled into thinking Beren was your woman when Yoav took her. Speaking of Beren, she's uncommonly quiet for several days as you head back, her eyebrows beetled together as she watches you. Three days out from the strangers camp, at almost the same place you sheltered from the storm, she finally breaks her silence. "So... I'm your woman now. I suppose it could be worse." She sighs and leans against you, the corner of her mouth quirking in an amused way. "Don't forget. If I'm your woman, you're my man. You'd better not laze about and let us go hungry."
>>
>>43733293
Well fuck, Beren's our women I guess.
>>
>>43733830
According to the customs of your clan, you've said she's yours and she's agreed, witnessed by the other clansmen in your group (a few of whom are giving you pitying looks), making you bound for life. You could always leave her, so long as she has birthed no children, but to do so afterwards, or without her agreeing, is a mark of serious shame among your people. And Beren doesn't seem the type to just let things, or people go...

Still, you muse, it could be worse. Beren has very long hair, past her waist and slightly hooked features that stop just short of being un-fetching. Her voice is loud, insistent and a little vain, but she makes up for her shortcomings with cleverness. And besides, if she's not to your liking but you can't get rid of her, men of your tribe often have multiple women bound to them; Mesut already has three and he's the same age as you!

When you return to the tribe, Beren doesn't wait long before telling others of what happened at the strangers camp. While there's quite a lot of anger at the way she was treated, her story of your rescue and claiming her as yours elicits bellows of laughter from most of the listeners! Elia congratulates you, grinning and slapping your back. "Beren's not nearly as fair as Galit, but you'll do fine," he assures you. "Don't make us wait too long for children though!"
>>
>>43733937
It is now late summer. You have no food left to last you into the future!

Beren is quite pleased to see you taking your task seriously. The fish do not swam like they did before, sadly, but you still manage to bring home a respectable amount. You and Beren can both eat for the rest of summer, thanks to your labour. The problem however, is that you only manage to catch enough to feed one of you into the fall, unless you gather more food at once. Suddenly, the benefits of hunting over fishing become clear to you. You may be safer in the river, but a hunt can yield more food at once; essential for supporting a family.

During the last days of summer, you catch glimpses in the river of a shadow that might be the serpent-fish-woman from the falls, but you cannot be sure. She doesn't seem to want to come any closer to you at the moment.

It is now early fall. You have enough food on hand to feed one person for half a season.

It may seem at the moment that Beren is nothing more than a burden, but she will give occasional bonuses to different actions. Her talents don't really lie in hunting or fishing however, so she won't help you out there.

You're acutely aware that with Beren relying on you, your old efforts simply aren't going to be enough any more, so with the leaves on the trees starting to turn from green to fall's riot of colours, you return to the river to ensure your family has enough. Your catch is not as impressive as the summer, but you still manage to land enough fish to keep you and your woman fed for the rest of fall.

Some of the days you go down to the river, you notice that scaled face watching the fishers, hidden in the reeds. You're the only one actively looking to find her and you suspect she's gone un-noticed, always watching your clan.

To your relief, the cold water has had an effect on your ankle, allowing you to once again move freely.

It is now late fall. You have enough food on hand to last you a half-season.

What will you do?

With winter closing in, Beren asks you one morning if you truly meant you could keep the tribe fed throughout winter, reminding you that you haven't worked on your smoker for a long time. Prompted by her, you return to the problem and continue trying to find a solution. For a long time, you're still stuck, but eventually, you have a breakthrough. As you're trying to warm yourself by a small fire next to your latest failed creation, Beren approaches, struggling with something in a heavy skin. Before you can ask what she's carrying, she up-ends the skin, dumping a load of earth onto your small fire. In an instant, you jump out, shouting, "What was that for?!" Kindling a fire is no easy task, so much so that just extinguishing one is something of a taboo among your clan.

She points to the dead fire and frowns. "I'm clever with people, not with your strange ideas, but even I can see that a fire can't burn if it's under a pile of dirt." For a moment, you're stuck dumb by the absurdity of her demonstration, but then it hits like Myslik's fist. Of course! The smoker isn't working because you've essentially smothered the fire beneath it! With this in mind, you try a new construction, wrapping a skin around a light frame to form a hood over the fire. With not as much earth smothering the flames, the whole construction finally works! It takes a roughly a day to prepare anything placed within, but the smoke keeps it tasting good. You've finally done it! Now the only challenge will be convincing the rest of the tribe to use it, but unlike your slings, this is definitely something everyone can see the value of.

>I forgot to mention. With the invention of smoking food, you and your family can now store twice as much in reserve.

The river in winter is freezing, slowing your movements and gnawing at your bones. Thankfully, it's not yet late enough in the year that you have to break through the ice to fish. You're pretty much the only person at the riverbank this late in the year, but not all your company is human. The serpent-woman from the falls seems to be unaffected by the cold however, always watching you with wide, amber eyes.

The cold and the lack of fish in the water means you can't bring home much. Just as it seems you'll have to make the decision whether or not to let yourself or Beren go hungry, you hear a rush of water behind you. Turning, you see the serpent-woman standing in the river. Her serpent tail has somehow been replaced with two long, slender legs and you're sure her skin is more human than it was before, less covered in scales... You silently regard one another for a moment, before she speaks. The drowning, bubbling sound is gone from her voice, but the words are still halting and unfamiliar to her. "Hungry?" She turns her head, looking down the river and reaches out her hand. Fish start to swarm around her feet, swimming in circles, until she bends down and pulls several from the river, tossing them onto the bank for you, beside your own pile.
"Uh... Thank you?" you blink, surprised at her helpfulness. She smiles and parrots your words.
"Thank-you..." Whatever spells she worked over the creatures of the river vanishes as she does, walking back into the waters and sinking down, swimming away.
>>
>>43740035
Beren is surprised at how much you're able to bring back, but the sight and the smell of the fish smoking beside the overhang your extended family calls home during the winter makes her happy, something she's not shy about sharing. "Looks like you're a fine man to be bound to after all! Even in winter you can keep your family fed. I was starting to get worried after you spent all your time messing with strange things."

It is now late winter. You have enough food to last you for half a season.

It's almost too much-! I've been worried for weeks that you'd all just lose interest or there'd be so little of it that I'd lose heart.

You like me! You really like me!

Anyway, votes... I should probably mention to you guys that the clan already tends to support one another in the worst times. You're all related by blood after all. A clan is basically just one REALLY extended family. If a group in the clan has a common grandfather, they're considered a single family and they support one another. Of course, if you're too much of a burden, your family might well throw you out on your ass and tell you to make your own family.

Now, IF I count right (and god knows, I'm not sure of myself... EVER), we're going with making a cloak and new spear out of the wolf parts. Writing.

With your food taken care of for the rest of winter, you resolve firmly not leave the warmth and safety of your lean-to for the rest of winter. Instead, you turn your hand to craftsmanship. The skin and bones you took from the body of the white wolf have been languishing unused for a year now and you decide it's time to finally put them to use. The pelt is an obvious choice; it'll make a fine cloak to keep you warm through winter and its striking colour's sure to get plenty of admiration from the tribe. The teeth and claws are a little more difficult. The claws are too curved to make good tips for spears and the teeth too small. You think you could make a good knife out of one of the larger claws however.

As you're about to start work, you realise you owe the creature from the river a debt for helping feed you and your woman. The idea takes you to make a necklace with a few of the wolf's teeth. As you start work however, you feel Beren's hand on your shoulders. "What are you making?" she asks, before examining your work. "A necklace? Is that a gift for me?"

>Roll 2d10 (Skill +Craftsman) to make the items. As you are attempting to make multiple items at once, the difficulty is raised somewhat.

I'm just a love machine that won't be invented for several hundred years minimum~

"It's not," you shake your head, lightly lifting her hands off your shoulders. For a moment, Beren looks upset and resentful, her eyes narrowing, before you take the wolf pelt and swirl it around her shoulders. "This is. You shall be wrapped in my greatest trophy, kept warm by the strength of my hand and the world shall be able to know you are mine from the valley away." Beren's shrill complaints at how little you value her are stopped in her throat before they can even begin. For a moment, she is stunned, her long, dark hair contrasting with the snow-white fur, as she runs her fingers over it. Then she leaps into your arms with a squeal of delight, kissing you and laughing (prompting a few cheers from watching members of your family).

When her lips finally leave yours, she's beaming in delight. Her hooked face is made almost beautiful with joy. "I never want to hear anyone say you're not the finest man in the clan," she exclaims, "No; in the whole valley! You could charm the birds out of the trees if you wanted, Trym."

With Beren well and truly pleased and for the first time since your bonding, honestly smitten with you, you set to work, your heart filled with a lightness you could scarce believe your loud, pushy woman could grant you. through the rest of winter, Beren is attentive and caring, keeping the fire warm, food on hand and your bed filled, as you fashion the fur into a fine cloak for her, which she immediately takes to showing off to everyone. The knives too come out acceptably and the necklace with the wolf's teeth is a fine piece that you're sure the river-woman will like, at least if she's anything like the women of your clan.

The clan is getting restless. Since the coming of the strangers, more and more people are starting to question the guidance of the elders. Word has it that the herds in the forest are starting to thin and the anger at Beren's mistreatment still hasn't faded. The elders refuse to take action, preferring to just keep their distance from the strangers, but certain clansmen, like Paku, are growing angrier. Mesut too has been taking more of a dominant role and his hunting band is growing daily, as he seems to accept any prospects now. To your shock, you realise that three in every ten in the tribe seem to listen to and follow him!

Before you set off to fish to provide for yourself and your woman, Beren stops you. "You've been good to me and I've done little for you," she says, before taking your hand and leading you to a secluded spot, not far from where you took to hiding when you worked on the slings. "I have a gift for you, to show that hopefully I can change that soon." she moves aside the long grass and presents you with a new, flint-tipped spear she's hidden there. Near to the grip, she's tied iridescent brown feathers with lengths of her black hair. "There. Now people will see that I love you as much as you love me," she beams, "Don't let it go to waste now; I put a lot of effort into that!"

After thanking Beren for her kind gift, you lay it carefully to one side and take up your lighter fishing spear. using her gift in the river would just be wasteful and besides, it's too heavy and brutal for small, slippery fish. The water is still bitterly with melted snow and ice from the high mountains, but at least it's more tolerable than the dead of winter. There's more fish too and you soon have a growing pile ready for smoking. You don't catch quite enough to feed both you and Beren into the new season however.
>>
>>43742494
Strangely enough, this spring, there was no sign of the river-woman who helped you in the winter. Her lack of watchful presence is a little jarring to you and you realise how used to her you've become.

It's time to put Beren's new spear to use. It's been some time since you hunted, but once you have your javelins, spear and sling, you can feel yourself remembering with ease. You go to find Elia, who's been enjoying himself ever since your return from the falls last year, by spending time with Galit and practicing with his sling. You briefly wonder why Elia hasn't already claimed her as his. It's possible he's afraid she'll just reject him if he forces the issue. On the other hand, even without anything recognised by custom, Galit's attachment to him has had some benefits and wrought some changes to the tribe. Elia is suddenly a lot more socially accepted and his skill with his sling hasn't gone un-noticed. More and more hunters are starting to see the use of the device and adopting it.

Elia's more than happy to come along with you. "Hunting alone's getting boring," he admits. "And I can't carry nearly as much home." He bits Galit a fond farewell, practically dancing, when she kisses his cheek and tells him to be safe! As the pair of you head to the woods, he sighs happily and doesn't stop talking about every virtue he sees in the girl, mostly surrounding her beauty. Eventually however, he can name nothing new and the conversation turns to Beren.
"So... Beren, brother? I never thought she was your type? She's a little... You know."
"Pushy? Loud? I won't deny it. Things happened."
"Mmmh. She seems happy though. And I think she's going to be wearing that wolfskin all through summer, she loves it so much! I kind of need to go hunting for one of my own, Galit's starting to get jealous." He laughs, only half-joking. "So have you two already..?" He lets the question drop without finishing. Oddly enough, you suspect you've had more success in that regard than he has...

Your hunt goes well. Elia's practice has definitely paid off, as he stalks close enough to the valley's small deer to put stones into their skulls nearly every time and what doesn't fall to javelins and stones, you can catch in snares that see you both staggering back into camp as summer begins, laden with meat for your smoker. As you prepare the venison and birdflesh and the heavenly smell starts to drift through the camp, several members of the tribe express curiosity at how to make their own. It seems your idea is catching on faster than you expected.

You now have plenty of meat to see both you and Beren through the first half of summer and one of you even through to the end of it. You begin to suspect there is an element of truth in the rumors that the herds are thinning however. As grand as your haul is, you should have brought home more...

It is now early summer. You have enough food stockpiled to see you and Beren through half a season and one of you a half beyond that.

Beren has a surprise for you when you return from your hunting. She proudly shows you the way her belly has begun to swell, putting your hand on top of it. "You'll have to work even harder soon, Trym," she smirks. You have a child on the way! Your entire family celebrates for you and Beren.

>Explore down the valley

Explain to Beren that we'll have to do this now before the kid comes, there is plenty of food for her that we brought back and we're going exploring to see if we can find any other big source of food, the herds are thinning after all
>>
What happened to giving the fish-lady the necklace..?
>>
>>43744629

We didn't see her when we last went fishing, with the fall fish run we should be back and collecting food, I am willing to bet that she will be there and hopefully will have studied humans more and be better prepared to actually have an interaction

Seeing that this might well be your first chance in a long while to exercise your wanderlust, you take advantage of the warm and agreeable weather to strike out down the valley in an attempt to see what you can find. You bid Beren a loving farewell that has her mockingly laugh at your sudden urge to leave. "If I find you've decided to live with the strangers to escape caring for our child," she warns you, "I'll come after you with a knife and turn your sack into a hat for the baby!" She laughs and you laugh, but judging by the look in her eyes, she might just do it as well... You decide you'd better not spend too long away. Your woman is not the sort to allow you too much indulgence in your wanderings.

Elia agrees to the trip however, selling it to Galit (who complains at his spending time away from her) as a chance to find her new and more beautiful gifts. "We'd better hope we find something worth bringing back," he sighs as you both leave, your bags heavy with food to sustain you. "I fear she's starting to get over my last gift."
"Are you even sure she's not simply looking for more fine things?" you ask cautiously.
Elia sighs. "Of course she is. Pretty gifts or not, I'm still weak-spear. I'm not much of a match for Mesut and the like. Oh, did you hear? He's got a forth woman now and her sister is Paku's first."
"Good for him," you nod. "Seems all of us have someone now."
"Well, two of us anyway," your brother grumbles.

You pass the village of the strangers and decide not to stop to give your greetings. Yoav's humiliation is still probably fresh in their minds and it might be unwise to show up without a gift for Myslik to smooth things over.

The further you go down the valley, the more it opens out, the land becoming flatter and more open. Fewer forest are to be found here and the small, lithe deer your used to are replaced by mean-looking goats. As you near the point you will have to turn back however, you find a broad, sweeping area between two low lines of hills, where the river bends inwards, meandering more and more into the distance, like a silvery road. In the grasslands between the two ridges however, you spy the rare, hulking forms of aurochs; a vast herd of them grazing on the long grasses.

"Would you look at that..." muses Elia. "Seems they prefer this place to further up the valley. just one could feed the whole clan." Aurochs are renowned for their power and size however and the pair of you hunting them could be a truly risky venture, to say nothing of the difficulty of hauling it back. Still... This must be a rich land indeed... Rich enough that you wonder why your ancestors didn't take to living here, rather than further up the valley. The slopes are covered with fragrant wild flowers which thrum with the buzz of bees, while the low bellow of the aurochs occasionally disturbs the beautiful quiet.

What will you do?
>Keep exploring. You've not found anything too interesting yet; just nice landscapes.
>Try to hunt one of the aurochs. It's dangerous, but what a prize..!
>Leave them alone and head back. You're probably missed by now.

Man we just got Beren pregnant, what shit luck if we die on this gambit
>>
I love seeing you lot squirm

You and Elia slowly inch your way closer to the aurochs herd, staying low in the grass. You spot a cow slightly more separated from the herd and you silently sign to Elia that she is your target. Closer and closer, you edge into range of your javelins and Elia fits a stone into his sling. Just as you are about to rise however, disaster strikes! The wind changes and as one mass, the aurochs lift their heads and catch your scent. There's a low, roaring moo of rage, as you stand, pulling your arm back. Elia's stone flies, but simply bounces off the auroch's tough hide and strong bones. Your javelin leaps from your hand and bites, hanging out of the creature's shoulder as it turns. More than the stone, the sharp wooden shaft pains and angers the cow so much that she screams and as one wall of muscle, the herd begins to move.

The earth shakes as they run towards you, stampeding through the grass and leaving it trampled, as you scramble to run! You have enough presence of mind at least to run diagonally, hoping to escape the herd's path of destruction, but just as it seems you're about to make it, the herd is upon you! A bull's broad horns pass either side of you and you feel its skull slam into your spine! With a toss of its head, its horn rips along your ribs and back and you are thrown into the air, landing in a sprawling heap, just to the side of the herd's thundering hooves. You lay in a small heap, covering your head with your arms and your legs curled up under you as the unstoppable force crashes by.

Finally, the stampede passes by and you hear Elia hurrying over to you. "Trym! Trym, are you alright?"
"What do you think?" you groan in response, slowly un-curling and gritting your teeth at the pain.
"It doesn't look like anything's broken... And the cut's not deep. Thank goodness. That was bad luck with the wind."
>>
>>43747406
You and Elia bind your injury as best you can. The cut may not be deep, but the sheer impact of the massive beast's bulk has cracked and bruised your ribs badly. You will suffer -1 to your strength until they heal. With no other choice left in the face of your injuries. You are forced to return to the clan.

You slowly make your way back up the valley to the clan. Beren sees your injuries and just shakes her head, after she hears your story of how you got them. "And you didn't even win? What did you expect? You and Elia can't bring down an auroch on your own!"

It is currently late summer. You have enough food stockpiled to see one person through another half a season.

Oh man, I forgot to account for the class change when writing those up...

Well regardless, I am not looking forward to another unholy late night, so I'm afraid I'm going to have to call this thread here.

Thank you all very much for playing and for staying with me so long! I hope to see you all on Monday at 4pm Eastern for the next part of Trym's saga! In case any of you want advance warning of the next time I run without having to constantly refresh the archives, the quest's twitter account is in the first post.

Before i go however, let's have a Q&A. How do you think the quest is going so far? Is anything particularly obtuse to you or needs further explanation? Is there anything you'd like clarified?
>>
>>43747641
It's going pretty good id say. About the only thing I have a gripe about is trying to tackle the aurochs with just two people. That's more on the anons than you. Now Mesut is going to go hunt them and get all the glory and food.
>>
>>43747641
What was the DC on that aurauch?
>>
>>43747810
20. You guys just missed it, but because of its sheer size and power, it was really an all-or-nothing gambit.
